Southwest Airlines welcomes new state livery to the fleet.

In March, Southwest welcomed Louisiana One as the 12th state-themed aircraft in our specialty fleet, joining aircraft honoring Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico, Tennessee, and Texas. On the heels of New Orleans’ tricentennial celebration, Southwest thanked our Employees and Customers for 39 years of NOLA loyalty and service with a state-dedicated Boeing 737-700 emblazoned with an artist’s rendition of the Louisiana state flag.

Our New Orleans–based Employees go above and beyond to support their city’s community, and they take pride in providing outstanding Hospitality. As the first state Southwest served beyond the Texas border, Louisiana holds a special

importance for Southwest. We are so grateful to be able to honor our Employees and Customers with this high-flying tribute. We began service to the Pelican State on January 25, 1979, with one nonstop departure to Houston (Hobby).

Louisiana One was welcomed in true Louisiana fashion. The festivities included live music from local favorite Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, and the Kinfolk Brass Band led guests to christen the specialty aircraft. To conclude the celebration, Southwest hosted a parade through downtown New Orleans with our Employees and community partners. As the parade— which included a float replica of Louisiana One—made its way through town, Southwest shared our love for this community by surprising Customers with Rapid Rewards bonus points to put toward a future New Orleans flight.

With more than 400 community partners, Southwest has been able to leverage those relationships to bring about change and create a deeper sense of community.

Southwest Airlines partnered with the José Limón Dance Foundation and its Limón4Kids program, which strives to create a positive impact on underserved New York City youth through dance education. Southwest and The Washington Center have teamed up through TWC’s Governors Program to expose Mexico’s future leaders to public policy, civic engagement, and governance matters,

while interning in D.C., to better prepare them for the complex challenges they will face.

The National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures was with us to celebrate the official launch of LUV Seat: Mexico. This collaboration with Mexican fashion designer Carla Fernández upcycles our airplane seat leather into sellable goods. Her foundation works with Mexican artisans to create designs and handcrafts that preserve the country’s heritage.

The Hispanic Federation and Fundación Azteca America joined forces to help communities rebuild homes that were lost during the earthquakes in Mexico. Through our efforts, we have helped reconstruct more than 400 homes and boost economic development by employing those directly affected. By forging a relationship with the Belize American Chamber of Commerce of Florida, Southwest has been able to extend our reach into the international community through that relationship.

These are just a few of the many partnerships Southwest has forged since expanding our international reach into the community. By partnering with diverse, meaningful organizations, we continue to foster and amplify relationships internationally.

We were trying desperately to get our family in Miami on a flight out before Hurricane Irma hit. Customer service agent Zackary Swindale understood the urgency of the situation. He was quick on his feet and thought of different routes and airports to get them out of Ft. Lauderdale. He was so patient, polite, and understanding. This was a highpressure situation since all flights out of FLL were totally booked because of the hurricane. We were also looking for two tickets together, which was an added challenge, but he got my parents on a flight to Atlanta. He helped us for more than an hour, always with a smile, despite the fact that it was a frustrating task.

of me. Captain Paul Horton made his way several rows back in the plane, and as he helped straighten seat belts and grab trash, he started talking with me. He didn’t need to come back in the plane to make conversation with customers, and surely he didn’t have to help straighten up at the end of the day, but he did. I just had to commend Captain Horton. A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. For my husband and me, recovering from Hurricane Harvey will mean putting one foot in front of the other for a journey of many days to come, but we’re on our way because that first single step was made possible by flight attendant Jim Van Horn. After being air-evacuated from our flooding neighborhood in Houston, we found ourselves in nearby Pasadena, Texas, at a shelter staffed

by volunteers who dried us, fed us, and clothed us (I had no shoes!). We located a hotel, but we had no transportation. We were in the process of signing up for Uber when a volunteer overheard and offered to help. It was Jim, who explained he’d been an Uber driver in the past and offered to take us anywhere we needed for free. Jim not only got us to our hotel but came back the next day to act as our driver while we hustled to get wheels, phones, and personal items. He continued to check on us in the following days. We will never forget Jim’s generosity and kindness. That single ride, that single step, made all the difference in getting us started toward healing.

Our home is in Sonoma County where the recent devastating fires were located. We thought our home was safe in Bennett Valley, but we, too, were evacuated. We watched planes, helicopters, smoke, flames, fire trucks, weary firefighters, and bulldozers

enter our neighborhood. It was truly horrifying. Our heroes, the firefighters, set a back-burn and saved our home, and we are forever grateful.

We were informed we couldn’t return home until the following week, so we decided to go to our other home in Orange County. I checked my bag and boarded the plane, but when I arrived at SNA, my bag did not arrive.

I entered the lost bag office and cried.

Customer service agent Dhtwyon Stevenson assured me he would do everything he could to get that bag back. He made me feel like I mattered.

I went to dinner, and when I checked back, my bag had still not arrived.

Dhtwyon felt certain it would be on the next flight, and sure enough, it was. I burst into tears when I saw my bag with every piece of clothing I owned. Dhtwyon asked me to come with him into the office. I thought he was filing paperwork, but he handed me a $100 voucher. Needless to say, I burst into tears again. Dear Reader, I’m in a coffee shop surrounded by my tablet, laptop, and smartphone.

My smartwatch is telling me to get moving: It’s time to return my rental car to an airport. Man, am I totally plugged. (My fellow editors will ask why I didn’t write “plugged in.” It’s because all these electronics can make me feel plugged up.)

This may sound familiar if you travel a lot on business. Even if you don’t, you doubtless know what it’s like to be plugged. Our gadgets send us constant updates on friends and work, keep our kids from talking with us face to face, and offer too many temptations.

On the other hand, being plugged isn’t all bad. The reason I’m in this coffee shop is because I’d been playing hooky, skiing with my son in Idaho while colleagues thought I was hard at work.

Would’ve been much tougher to do that pre-internet.

But then, once a year, my wife and I drive to the Maine

wilderness, far from any cell service. We stay in a cabin without electricity or plumbing, though nearby there’s a lodge with electricity and showers. They feed you breakfast and dinner and pack you a lunch to take on adventures.

The cabins we like best are on protected lakes miles long. I bring my own big paddleboard and canoe anchor. After breakfast, I take off with some books, a fishing rod, and a paddleboard-friendly chair.

Loons come to visit. Beavers and bald eagles, too. Every now and then, a moose or two appear on shore, wondering myopically what the heck I am.

This isn’t for everyone. There are other ways to unplug, as this issue shows. For one, you have this magazine. Among its many benefits, you won’t find a single plug.

I loved Steve Almond’s article about pinball [March 2018]. My heartbeat picked up as I read, and it sparked some cherished memories from my youth. I was glad to know about the resurgence of pinball, as I had not heard about the organized league play, only the random machines in friends’ homes. One thing that surprised me: The list of great places to play across the country omitted the Silverball Museum in Asbury Park, New Jersey. Perhaps you didn’t mention it for the same reason my Colorado cousins never reveal the location of their favorite backpacking trails—they don’t want to see anyone else there. But Silverball deserves recognition and patronage. I visit every year, and, in keeping with another point of Steve’s article, I’ve been taking my 8-year-old daughter there to show her an alternative to video games. Thanks again for the read.

While half of millennials identified as picky eaters, only a third of boomers felt the same. “Over the past five years, food trends and modes of accessing food have emerged and evolved faster than ever,” says Jeanette Mellinger, head of Uber Eats user research.

What about the absentee boss?

“Take charge and schedule short, regular meetings.

They’re going to cancel half, but hopefully you’ll get the other half. Be prepared and have specific requests. And don’t be afraid to do things on your own. I’m an absentee boss, and my employees will email me and say, ‘Here’s what I’m doing. If you have any concerns, let me know. Otherwise, I’m taking this project and moving it forward.’ I love that, and it gives them a chance to shine.”

How does managing up serve you in the long run?

“Really great bosses shift their management style based on the person so they can get the best out of each employee. If you can learn how to do that when you’re managing up, you’re going to be all the better at it when you are the boss.”

n the back room of a nondescript government building in Kanab, Utah, a middle-aged Chinese man in street clothes taps the bottom of his empty coffee cup, anxious for his number to be called. A group of 20-somethings straight out of an REI catalog forms a good luck scrum, jumping up and down as if they’ve already won, hydration tubes bouncing. A pair of Germans in motorcycle leathers scowls; this is their seventh try.

My husband and I tried a year and a half ago, and again yesterday. Hoping that the third time’s the charm, we’re ready with cameras, sunscreen, and plenty of water. We’re lucky that the weather is springtime mild; summer temperatures edge over 100 degrees.

At the front of the room, a ranger in the sand-colored uniform of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management presides over a bingo cage of numbered wooden balls. Behind him are information sheets that are handed may 2018 Southwest 53

out to winners, with versions in English, Spanish, German, Dutch, French, Italian, Russian, Korean, Mandarin, and Japanese.

In a few minutes, he’ll call out the numbers of the 10 people who’ll be today’s winners. Months back, another 10 spots were awarded in an online lottery. Odds for us walk-ins are better than for those who try online, and today, they’re better than usual. Often there are more than 100 people, and the day after Thanksgiving, 319 people showed up. Today’s 80 is nothing.

“We’ve got just one more minute before we start,” the ranger says, flashing a game-show host smile. “And it’s not one of those New York minutes. It’s a full-on Southern Utah minute.”

The audience responds with strained smiles. There are those who’ve tried 10, even 14 times. Some built a trip from abroad around this daily lottery in a small U.S. town of about 4,500 people. Others will stay long after they should have gone home, sure that just one more try means they’ll go home winners.

We’re here for the chance to see a rock. A very big and beautiful rock, to be sure, but still: a rock. It’s called the Wave, for its liquid sweep and flare. Picture huge ocean breakers, and then freeze the frame just as they’re crashing into each other sideways. Trade blue for the colors of a Technicolor sunset. Switch the texture to dry, rough, and delicately ribbed.

Now brace for the synesthesian disorientation of rock that thinks it’s water.

Fittingly, the Wave was born in water, back when this area was a vast inland sea.

The water receded, and dunes hardened to stone. Geologists describe the Wave as converging U-shaped troughs of Jurassic-era sandstone. The two major troughs measure 62-by-118 feet and 7-by-52 feet, but what impresses isn’t the Wave’s dimensions: It’s the kinetic surge of something that, by all rights, should be static.

Getting there is a trudge through sand in the high desert sun. With the strict permitting process, winners expect the experience itself to be highly managed. It isn’t. Though the round-trip hike is only

about 6 miles, there’s no real trail, and people get lost. In 2013, three hikers died, including a 27-year-old woman celebrating her fifth wedding anniversary; her husband survived.

Talking earlier with another ranger, I learned of a Japanese woman who’d arrived at the office, having run more than a mile because she couldn’t find a cab. She collapsed on the carpeting, sobbing, when she learned she was too late to enter the lottery. Other people try bribery; some even claim it’s their birthday or that they don’t have long to live. “Not gonna work,”

“It’s 9 o’clock,” the ranger emcee announces. “Heeere we go!”

Experienced contestants scan the room, alert to large groups. Only one person per group can enter, but they can list up to six people on their application. If someone’s number is called and they’ve listed the maximum number, more than half of the day’s 10 spots are gone quicker than a flash flood in a slot canyon.

COMPETING AGAINST OTHER nature lovers for the chance to get outdoors may seem like an oxymoron along the lines of “wildlife management.” (When John Muir wrote, “The mountains are calling and I must go,” he didn’t have to enter a lottery to fulfill his destiny.) But these days, with millions tramping along in Muir’s footsteps, we gladly throw our hats into the ring for marquee outdoor experiences. Lists of the most difficult outdoor permits to get often appear in adventure magazines. The Wave always makes the list, as do permits to climb Mount Whitney, hike the Enchantments in Washington State, and raft the Yampa River in Dinosaur National Monument.

home can be a challenge. “I feel like I’ve won the lottery if I’m able to book a weekend campsite within three hours of San Francisco,” says Katie Cook, a freelance writer who spends every free moment hiking and camping.

But Cook lucked out a little further afield in 2017, snagging the Sierra Nevada’s “golden ticket,” a permit to backpack the John Muir Trail, including access to iconic Half Dome, Yosemite’s sheerfaced granite monolith. While on the 211-mile trail, her group chatted with another hiker, who said he’d done it maybe a dozen times. When she marveled at how he’d managed to get so many permits, he shrugged. “Permits? Who needs permits?”

Christine Colbert, who is writing a book about public land use, says that the lottery system is designed not just to protect the land but also to safeguard our experience of it. She tells me about how, in nearby Zion National Park, the Narrows—one of the area’s premier hikes, along or in a river that runs through a narrow gorge—can see thousands of people on a given day. In contrast, the Subway, a slot canyon in the same park, has a lottery allowing just 80 visitors per day. Recalling her time working on trail maintenance in Zion, she says, “You can smell the Narrows even before you get there. With that many people, you need to provide outhouses along the way.”

Many national parks are seeing substantial increases in visitor numbers, and attractions on other kinds of public land also wrestle with how to contend with their own popularity. Because of that, lotteries attract more people every year. In 2017, 161,467 people entered the Wave lottery for a shot at 7,300 permits. Just four years earlier, only 86,898 people applied.

ONCE THE WAVE is on your radar, you see its pulled-taffy undulations everywhere: on calendars,

in social media feeds, featured in blog posts, articles, and films.

But 50 years ago, the only modern-era folks to have seen it were a few wandering cowboys and miners.

Long before that, Ancestral Puebloan and Paiute peoples came through, as did a 1776 expedition led by two Spaniards looking for an overland route from Santa Fe, New Mexico, to their mission in Monterey, California.

Outlaws hid in its canyons, ranchers ran their cattle, and prospectors mined for gold and uranium.

Starting in the 1990s, guidebooks, articles, and films featuring the Wave caused an explosion of local and international interest.

In 1997, the Bureau of Land Management introduced a website allowing visitors to obtain permits up to a year in advance. In 2007, the new lottery system made 10 spots available online four months in advance and 10 more up for grabs in person.

The town of Kanab has come to rely on the year-round influx of aspiring Wavers. A 2015 proposal to make the lottery online only— eliminating the walk-in event— was shot down, in part because the town appreciates the nearly $7 million tourists contribute to its economy each year.

WE’RE HALFWAY THROUGH the draw. The emcee milks it, pausing dramatically before calling out the numbers. Winners hug and exclaim in various languages.

The rest of us slide further down in our chairs. “There are plenty of other great places nearby,” the ranger soothes. “We’ll be happy to point you in the right direction.”

Most of us are going to lose, and we’re going down faster than we think. The ranger calls the number of a person who listed four others on her application. All at once, today’s remaining spots are gone.

The room deflates in a collective groan. There are more than a

few glares thrown in the direction of the winners.

So we lost, for the third damned time. But hey, we joke, with all those online photos and firsthand accounts, it’s almost as if we’ve already been there, right?

Still, we’re disheartened. We realize we’ve just played our part in the carnival of landscape lust that makes the Wave famous not just for its beauty but for how many of us are denied that beauty.

Some of us seem frozen in our chairs; others get up and flounce away. Over coffee yesterday at the local bookstore/café/gear shop, the owner told us, “People get really mad when they don’t win.

They get tunnel vision. But the Wave isn’t the only place to go around here.”

WE END UP heading out on unpaved Cottonwood Canyon Road, through the heart of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. At first the landscape is flat and arid. A lone cow slumps near the only bush in sight.

Then we come up over a rise, dropping down into a scene that looks like Dr. Seuss smacked into the Summer of Love. Red spires have eroded into giant melted chess pieces that stand sentinel around a tiny oasis of green. Orange cliffs, glowing as if lit from within, are tiger-striped with desert varnish. Oversized mushrooms of peach-colored sandstone look good enough to eat.

We’re finally starting to get it, what everyone told us but we couldn’t believe—until now. The Wave isn't the only—or even necessarily the best—option.

Candy-colored rock pulses under a bright blue sky. And aside from one snooty sandstone starlet, the high desert is ours for the exploring.

Uncharted Waters

Holding tight to our paddles and letting go of our phones, my family and I braved 120 miles of the Mississippi and forged a special bond.

A

t 6 a.m., I was shin deep in the Mississippi River, strapping our bags into our canoe so they wouldn’t float away if we capsized. On shore, my wife, Bridgit, stood with our two girls, Libby and Josie, who were skipping rocks.

Once the last bag was secure, we climbed in and found, to our relief, that there were still several inches between the top of the canoe and the water. We pushed out into the river, and were off on our journey southward.

It was an adventure we had planned ever since we’d moved back to Minnesota nearly a decade ago. I’d grown up in a small Minnesota town called Winona, 120 miles downstream from where we lived now in Minneapolis. It felt important to connect the two places, to know the river between them. We would row together, like the voyageurs. We would forget about the modern world and its troubles for

five days and see our home in a new light. It was just a small piece of the river’s 2,350 miles, but it was a piece filled with meaning for me.

Bridgit was up front, I was in back, and Libby, 11, and Josie, 8, sat between us. It was the perfect time for such a trip: They were old enough to paddle but small enough that we could fit in one boat.

We had this world-class wilderness area—part of the National Park System—running right through our backyard. All we had to do was get on it, and it would take us away.

Fish nipped the surface of the water around us.

The sun rose as we rounded the first bend. It must have looked the same as when the writer Jonathan Raban sailed down the Mississippi in 1979.

The river, as he wrote in Old Glory, was “as big and depthless as the sky itself. You can see the curve of the earth on its surface as it stretches away for miles to the far shore.”

We couldn’t see that far, but we did have a sense of something powerful and unknown beneath us, that we were somehow putting ourselves at its mercy. Many people we’d talked to thought taking our kids on this trip was either dangerous or foolish. But to me it seemed like the real danger was never to have taken the trip at all. Besides, we had even postponed it a day because of thunderstorms. After the rain stopped, I had come down to the shore and half-jokingly asked the river spirits for permission and safe passage. They seemed to be listening.

Between Minneapolis and St. Paul, the Mississippi flows through a gorge walled in by steep wooded hills and sandstone cliffs, so we moved fast enough that it barely felt like work.

“This is going to be no problem!” I yelled.

“We’ve only been paddling for 5 minutes,” Bridgit retorted.

We passed under bridges and through the odd sideways currents created by St. Paul’s spans and islands. Then the river turned south, and the screeching of the rail yard grew faint. The shore

was lined with trees, and an eagle soared overhead. It was as if we’d managed to step out of the present and into a gentler current.

Almost on cue, we came to an island with a giant rope swing, like something straight out of one of Huck Finn’s adventures. We stopped for lunch and took turns sailing out over the water like it was the 1890s. Then, reluctantly, we moved on.

The river slowed, but we still made good time and settled into a new rhythm. Earlier, the residue of our lives—the phone calls, the emails, the deadlines—seemed to trail behind us in the water. But with every mile they drifted farther away. By the time the sun started setting, all that seemed to matter were the water and the trees and what was around the next bend.

We came to a series of small islands, one with a rudimentary campsite. We set up our tent, made dinner, and fell asleep to the sound of waves on the sand. Everything was going according to plan.

W

e packed at dawn, ate a quick breakfast, loaded the canoe, and then pushed off. The wind was still behind us. We passed an island full of pelicans before coming to our first lock and dam. As we drifted in, walls of concrete rose some 20 feet around us. The space was big enough for a barge, and we felt tiny inside. The gates closed behind us, and the lock attendant threw down a

The time between then and now had been full and rich, not thin and fast—the way most days felt.

After a few more hours, we came to the Prairie Island Indian Community marina, where we stopped to use the bathroom. When we were about ready to move on, the wind started to blow, the sky blackened, and the temperature dropped.

“Maybe you guys should wait in the bathroom,” I said, handing over the life jackets, so they wouldn’t blow away. I put on my rain gear, tied up the canoe, and waited. Somehow, the storm went around us, and not a drop of rain fell. I thanked the river spirits.

Back on the water, we tooled past the cooling towers of a nuclear power plant. I felt lighter, more unrestricted, more unburdened. Was it the freedom of being on the river?

“Wait a minute,” I said, “where’s my life jacket?”

Bridgit’s shoulders slumped.

“We left it in the bathroom,” Libby said.

The sun was nearing the horizon. By then, we were a mile downstream. Everyone was tired. “It’s fine,” I said. “I can swim.”

We went on in silence.

The sun was bright, the clouds billowy. Thousands of tree swallows flew around us, eating mayflies and midges. Watching them and the other wildlife—baby turtles, endless eagles, a deer swimming across the channel—occupied much of our time. We told half-remembered stories and sang parts of songs. The girls occasionally got on each other’s nerves. But most of the time, the river itself entertained us as well as any screen.

he next morning when I woke up, the fact that we’d done no actual training for this trip became painfully clear. As a runner, I’d thought I was in decent shape, but now my back wouldn’t bend in the usual way. Bridgit was holding her forearms like a velociraptor, massaging them until they loosened up. The previous night, I’d jumped in the river to wash off. Now, I noticed red marks all over my legs and pelvis.

(Later, I asked my dad—a dermatologist—about them. “Oh, that’s just a duck parasite larva that burrows under your skin while you’re swimming,” he said.

“Just?” I echoed.

“Swimmer’s itch. Don’t worry about it. No one has connected it to anything bad so far.”)

Itching, I shook the sand out of our bags and packed them, and we got back in the canoe. Today we would cross Lake Pepin, a windy expanse that may 2018 Southwest 71

everyone assured us was the most difficult part of our trip, if not the entire Mississippi. The lake was more than 20 miles long and several miles wide. It felt more like an ocean than a river.

Rain and wind pounded at our backs as we set off, pushing us along to where the river widened, and we headed out into the open water of Lake Pepin. I tried to steer us along the western side, but not so close that it pushed us into the rocks. The farther we traveled, the bigger the waves grew and the harder it became to manage the canoe. Close to shore, we could see more eagles in trees of a state park.

“I don’t like this,” Libby said, her voice quavering.

“Not many get to see the park from here.”

“Yeah,” she said, “I can see why.”

I didn’t like it either. The waves were 4 feet high. Our canoe was too long to ride them straight on, and it was almost impossible to

steer. The boat teetered on top of waves, and then dove into the troughs. Water crested over the edge into the canoe, and the girls bailed. After more than 2 hours, we came to the narrow point where we had to cross.

“OK, we all need to paddle!” I said over the wind.

There were no boats or barges, so we turned and headed straight to the other side, a mile from point to point. The waves were still high and the wind was at our side. I dug deep to keep us at an angle.

We reached the far shore and turned south. Several miles away, we could see a smudge of land that was our destination, a tiny town called Stockholm with a campground on the beach. After a long, long day, we finally arrived just before 5 p.m. We’d only covered 21 miles compared to 26 the day before, but they were hardearned. Our nerves were frayed.

o one wanted to leave Stockholm. We were all tired, and we still had half of Lake Pepin left. The campground felt like an oasis, so the next morning, we lingered. I walked down to the beach and looked out over the lake.

It felt like three weeks since we’d left home, not three days. The time between then and now had been full and rich, not thin and fast— the way most days felt. A sense of urgency had fallen away, as if we’d

stumbled on an older rhythm that had been there all the time.

But we still had 50 miles to go, and there were thunderstorms expected in a few days, so we shoved off once again. By midmorning, we’d reached the point where Lake Pepin narrowed back into the river. A few miles later, we came to Wabasha, the town where the film Grumpy Old Men had been set more than two decades earlier.

On shore, we could see an ice

cream shop and debated whether to stop. To me, the dock looked treacherous, and I argued that we should land on the sandy beach next to it. Bridgit said it was private, and we had a brief, heated, pointless argument. By the time it was over, we’d drifted past.

Ice cream receded behind us, growing more delicious with each mile. The wind died. The heat rose.

Now we had grumpy old canoers and grumpy young canoers. We

continued without a word, all trying to turn our mood against the current. We stopped on an island for lunch, but there was too much poison ivy to do any exploring. We were beginning to know the river, and it was wearing us down.

By the late afternoon, we started looking for an island to camp on. There were lovely open spaces. There were idyllic campsites. But it was too early; we moved on. Within a few miles, the islands we saw were overgrown and impossible to land on. Ahead was a lock and dam.

“Let’s just get through the lock,” I said. “We’ll have less to do tomorrow. It’ll be our last day.”

Without enthusiasm, everyone agreed. The gates swung open. We drifted in.

Below the lock, we passed a defunct power plant with massive smokestacks that climbed high into the sky. The islands around it were choked with underbrush. We kept going, mile after mile, looking for a small spot to pitch our tent.

“Nothing,” Bridgit said, despair creeping in.

She was tired. We all were. We’d gone almost as far as any day yet— more than 25 miles—and there was no end in sight. It was nearly 7 p.m., and we should have been making our dinner. We came to a grassy spot under some utility poles.

“We could camp under those power lines,” I said.

“Why would we camp under power lines?” Bridgit snapped.

Then, in a smaller voice she added, “What are we going to do?”

“We keep paddling,” I said.

Muscles tensed in her shoulders. Suddenly, she started paddling with a force I didn’t know she could muster, powered by sheer rage. Water splashed over the rest of us. The girls looked back at me without a word, eyebrows raised.

I put my finger to my lips, like we were in the presence of a wild animal. Then, just as suddenly, she slumped forward in the canoe.

“It’s OK, Mama,” Josie said.

The weight of the modern world had lifted with each stroke.

“We’ll paddle. You rest.”

After a short while, Bridgit came back to life, and we paddled another handful of miles. Eventually, we came to a gorgeous, flat, sandy island. It was covered in white, paper-thin turtle egg shells.

There was a small lake in the middle. The day was over. The river had given us a perfect home for the night.

he upside of canoeing almost 30 miles the day before was that we had only 23 left the following day. All things being equal, our final day would be an easy one, which would end with a shower at my parents’ place.

The canoe felt light, and so did

our mood. The sun was bright, and our minds were clear. For five days, we hadn’t read a tweet or sent an email. The weight of the modern world had lifted with each stroke.

At noon, we rendezvoused with Bridgit’s father and sister for lunch by the river. The girls were offered a ride home but opted to keep going. “We should finish as a family,” Josie said.

We set off through the green hills. We stopped on a sandbar to let a barge pass. Late that afternoon, we came to the final lock a few miles before Winona, eager to arrive, but knowing that once we did, we would be stepping back into the torrent of our lives.

When the lower gates let us out,

we came into the stretch I knew best, where I used to rope swing and water ski and jump off bridges.

Memories came flooding back. We passed under an old railroad bridge with graffiti from the class of 1989 (I was 1990), a kind of welcome home in spray paint.

Beyond the bridge, we came to a beach and pulled the canoe out of the water. It was bittersweet to be leaving the river that had carried us so far. We felt closer to it, closer to each other, maybe even closer to ourselves. But now, the trip was over and the currents of the present were pulling us back.

For five unforgettable days, the river had kept the world at bay. For that, and for seeing us through safely, we went down to the water, thanked the spirits one last time, and turned toward home.

Nestled in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo range, some 7,000 feet above sea level, Santa Fe is the nation’s highest state capital and makes a great jumping-off point for skiing, hiking, mountain biking, and backpacking. The 11.5-mile Aspen Vista Trail is a local favorite, particularly in the fall when the

aspens turn a breathtaking golden hue. With 325 days of sunshine, though, Santa Fe is a boon for nature lovers any season.

After coming off the trail, go where the locals get their red and green chile fix: The Shed or La Choza, a pair of casual, line-outthe-door restaurants run by the same family. Both eateries appear on Santa Fe’s Margarita Trail, which is made up of 31 bars and restaurants that craft a mean marg. Beyond chile and cocktails, the Santa Fe Farmers Market offers other tastes of the region. On Saturdays year-round, scores of vendors sell everything from ciders and cheeses to locally grown herbs and produce.

Pop into The Jahva House for a mid-tour caffeine boost before checking out dozens of boutiques and art galleries, the Ocotillo Performing Arts Center, and “New Mexico’s Most Beautiful Library,” featuring a stunning Peter Hurd mural.

Near the end of the tour, the Artesia Historical Museum and Art Center displays a compelling collection of local artifacts, photographs, and newspapers.

Look for a company with an ethos that lines up with yours, and make sure the business is something you’ll personally enjoy.

“If I meet someone who doesn’t have a passion for elder care, I won’t let them buy a franchise because

I know they won’t succeed,” says Barbara Schuh, vice president of franchise operations for Home Care Assistance, a company focused on long-term care for the elderly. “Ours is a culture of caring,” she says, so the most successful and happy Home Care Assistance franchisees are those who share that ethic.

It’s also important to inquire about the relationship between the fran-

chise and its franchisees. Find out what their communication style is, and try to gauge the responsiveness of executives. One of the best ways to do this, according to Schuh, is to take full advantage of validation calls, an industry-standard opportunity for potential franchisees to question current franchise owners.

“On those calls, find out what the company will expect from you, and how much support you can expect from them,” Schuh says. “Are they a consultant and coach, or do they only come in when there’s a problem?”

WHAT’S THE FRANCHISE TRAINING PROCESS?

New franchisees are rarely experts in the franchise businesses they buy. That’s why franchisors provide extensive training and tools for the owner. The biggest difference between franchises is the amount of training and available resources dedicated to their success.

Alex Samios is vice president of franchise development for Dogtopia —the fastest growing franchise in the pet industry—and a daycare, boarding, and grooming facility for canines. He says it’s important to ask questions about training up front.

“Are they only giving you a couple of days to figure out a complex business? And is some of that training

on-site, so you can see how it works in a real facility like yours?”

After that, you’ll receive two weeks of on-site training that will teach you the details of dayto-day operations. “Some people want to talk with franchisees whose names they didn’t get from the headquarters—to get other viewpoints—but you’ll learn the most from business owners who joined in the last two or three years and are really succeeding,” Jack says.

Not only are those successful newcomers more up-to-date on how the franchise welcomes owners, but they can provide insight into what worked best for them.

National Civil Rights Museum

Encompassing the former Lorraine Motel, where civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968, the National Civil Rights Museum aims “to share the culture and lessons from the American Civil Rights Movement and explore how this significant era continues to shape equality and

freedom globally.” The museum’s powerful permanent exhibits cover five centuries, moving from the slave trade to the sit-ins, marches, and movements that defined the mid-20th century. Learn about the sanitation strike that brought King to Memphis in the spring of 1968, and work your way through 260 artifacts, 40 fi lms, oral histories,

and interactive media. Of particular note is a replica of the Greyhound bus used in a cross-country “Freedom Ride” and an original lunch counter with life-size figures modeled after the protestors. Lastly, don’t miss Voices of the Civil Rights Movement. Collected over two years, the exhibition includes interviews with civil rights leaders like the Rev. Jesse Jackson, Rep. John Lewis, and Sen. Harris Wofford.

It also includes “Moments in Civil Rights History,” a video narrated by the late D’Army Bailey, the museum’s founder and activist.

As we mark the 50th anniversary of his tragic death, we remember Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s warnings against silence. He knew the danger of complacency. He warned of the perils of indifference.

The National Civil Rights Museum chronicles the Civil Rights Movement and its legacy to examine today’s issues, provoke thoughtful debate and serve as a catalyst for positive change.

We will continue into the future as voices for justice answering the question, “Where do we go from here?”

Carol Burnett,

Never make a career decision based on money. When I was in my 20s, I had an offer to do an off-Broadway show, Once Upon a Mattress. It was only going to run for six weeks at a subscription theater and paid $80 a week.

I wanted to do it, but my manager said, “Are you crazy? I can get you a nightclub act in Las Vegas for $1,500 a week.” That was more money than I could ever imagine, but I had always wanted to be on Broadway. I said to myself, I’m not going to think about the money.

I’m going to think about learning.

The show not only ran six weeks, but we were successful enough that they moved us to Broadway and we ran for a year. That was a very big break for me.
