With so many dating options out there, why did you choose It's Just Lunch?

D: I travel a lot for work, so I’d read about It’s Just Lunch in airline magazines, and then I ran into a friend who was attending the wedding of an attorney in town who’d met her husband through IJL – the fact that those two events happened so close together, I thought I should call them. At the end of my work day I didn’t want to come home and go look at profiles online. I felt like it was a waste of my time. M: I had gotten a divorce and then did online dating for a while before joining IJL. I joined mainly because it’s a lot of work to do the online thing. You have to keep up on it. You never really know who you’re going to meet. IJL was just a lot easier. They found people for me based on what I was looking for and I just had to show up. You don’t have to do much work. What would you tell a friend who was apprehensive about investing the money on IJL?

M: I’d ask, “Are you looking for a relationship or not?” With online dating you never know who’s on the other side of the line. IJL had better quality people who were interesting to me. It truly was an experience that was tailored for me. Describe your first meeting with an IJL matchmaker?

D: She asked me questions about

myself, what I like to do, what I want in a relationship, whether I’d marry someone who already had kids, how important religion is, that kind of thing. It

would take much longer to find out someone else’s answers to those questions through online dating. This was black and white.

Tell us about your first date with one another.

D: I never went on lunch dates because I was always busy at work so I met Michael after work at a downtown restaurant. The conversation just flowed. I was attracted to him from the start. I remember it turned into dinner.

Gary’s Greeting

The Gift of Gratitude 30-something, it was still a fairly small, regional airline. Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined the journey I was about to take. The Company has grown from 71 airplanes in 1986 to more than 700 in 2016, and it’s hard to believe that we carry more Customers in the United States today than any other airline. We’ve also grown from more than 5,800 Employees (excluding TranStar) to more than 50,000. And of all the wonderful places, projects, and milestones along the way, what I cherish the most is to be a part of the Southwest Family.

I am grateful for the many mentors I’ve had along the way. Of course, the famous Herb Kelleher and Colleen Barrett immediately come to mind, as they’ve played an instrumental role in my journey at this great Company. Through their actions, they taught me what it means to “live the Southwest Way.” And that simply means to have a Warrior Spirit, a Servant’s Heart, and a Fun-LUVing Attitude. Of course, I’m especially grateful for my Family at home. I married my high school sweetheart 40 years ago this year, and we have two grown daughters who have blessed us with four beautiful granddaughters. They mean the world to me. I am grateful for the prosperity and success that Southwest has enjoyed over the years, which have enabled 43 consecutive years of profitability and distinguished us as the only major airline that has not had an involuntary furlough. That success and job security has allowed us to take great care of our People. In turn, they take great care of you, our valued Customers. On behalf of the entire Southwest Family, thank you for allowing us to share the gift of gratitude with you this holiday season!

Passion Projects

With Heart of the Community grants, Southwest Airlines creates change. When we launched our Heart of the Community program in 2014, we knew the projects and communities we were supporting would see positive outcomes as a result. Why were we so confident? We trusted and believed in the placemaking process, which positions the community as the expert. As our Founder Herb Kelleher said, “If you create an environment where the people truly participate, you don’t need control. They know what needs to be done and they do it.” This philosophy has worked for Southwest for more than 45 years, so why wouldn’t it work for the communities we serve? We are proud to support community-led visions that reimagine parks and other public places. We’ve seen the benefits of this process firsthand, and an initial evaluation proves that the projects have resulted in economic, community, and social benefits. After evaluating five Heart of the Community sites, we found that those projects averaged $4 in additional leveraged investment for every $1 from the Southwest Heart of the Community grant. Southwest’s investments have also helped fill these

public spaces with colorful amenities and diverse programming, resulting in 2.5 million visitors and 1.4 million event attendees across the five locations. This is a clear indicator that these communities have made these spaces their own. Residents aren’t the only ones reaping the benefits. In our September issue, we featured Baltimore’s Dizzy Cow Pizzeria, a small business that has seen growth after Pratt & Light Plaza received a Heart of the Community grant. Combined, our projects in Baltimore, San Diego, San Antonio, Detroit, and Providence, Rhode Island, have created 53 new jobs and generated $7.7 million in visitor spending. At Southwest, our Purpose is to connect People to what’s important in their lives, whether that’s a special destination or the place our Customers and Employees call home. Recently, I was traveling with my 10-year-old nephew, who was excited to be going on his first trip without his parents. In the parking lot at dinner, he realized he’d lost his wallet with his spending money. We called the airport and were told to go to customer service to see if it was turned in. When we got there, there weren’t many flights coming in and everything was closed. Customer service agent Lise Lacasse remembered a wallet being turned in, but it was in the safe and only ramp agent Dave Marr could open it. She contacted Dave, who was on the other side of the airport, and he came over 10 minutes later. He got the wallet, and I’ve never seen my nephew so happy. What a great experience for my nephew to see the goodness in people in a situation he thought was catastrophic! Denver airport at 4 a.m., I realized that I still had my wife’s driver’s license with me. Yolanda offered to put it in the mail once the post office opened. That would have been great, but I didn’t have the mailing address of the place where we had been staying. Yolanda gave me her email and mobile number and told me to send her the address once I knew it. I did. She then, with her own money, purchased an envelope and first-class postage and mailed the driver’s license that morning. Additionally, she sent me a picture of the package and tracking number to make me feel at ease. My wife received it the next day. Yolanda went above and beyond to help a stranger in distress. While flying from Oakland to Phoenix to see a friend, I left my laptop at the security checkpoint and didn’t realize this until we were wheels-up. I told her, and then tried to stay calm until we landed. Unknowingly, I was sitting next to senior recruiter Brenda Battle, a longtime Southwest employee. I want to commend customer service agent Dan McGurk. I am 81 years old and somewhat crippled. The shuttle service to my home in Kingman, Arizona, failed to pick me up from the airport. My phone was dead, and Dan saw from my face that I was a little panicked. He tried to contact my shuttle company to no avail and then made all the arrangements for me to rent a car to get home. Dear Reader,

Thirty-five years ago a single word changed my life forever. This issue is dedicated to that word. I didn’t deserve it. In fact the whole day had been a mess. It was just before Christmas when I took a woman downhill skiing; it was her first time. Once the chairlift got going, she began to cry, and that’s when I noticed her terror of heights. Still, she bravely rode the lift and suffered a day of inching down the slopes. Back in my apartment that evening, I opened a bottle of rare Chilean wine, given to me by my best friend several years earlier. He had told me when to open it, and this was the night. We toasted, sipped the wine, and almost spat it out. Pure vinegar. Over the years of careless storage in a bachelor’s efficiency apartment, it had spoiled. Still, I drank all of it, because it was special. Then I opened a bottle of Champagne. She unwrapped her present, and inside the small box was an enormous ring—a man’s ring, gold with a modest diamond set in the middle. At this point I was so far gone from the wine that I had to get up on one knee. Wishing I was sober and had rehearsed, I told her as articulately as possible that I had found the ring in a family safe deposit box and had planned to have it turned into an engagement ring but had waited too long and the goldsmith was too busy for the holidays and in any case it was a ring, which sort of counted, didn’t it, and would she marry me? “Yes,” she said.

I really enjoyed the article on Paul Alan Cox [“The Storied Man,” September 2016]. Too often, popular magazine writing on science veers into hyperbole and world-changing breakthroughs, often to the chagrin of scientists who urge a more cautious interpretation. It was great that both the editor and the author kept the Cox quotes where he emphasized that he was speculating or just spitballing, and the framing of Cox as a storyteller helped connect otherwise disparate pieces into a really strong article. After reading “Hidden Treasure” and “The Promise” [July 2016], I was transported back in time to the summer of ’66 when I worked in a gift shop at the Grand Canyon. At 19, I didn’t realize the people skills I learned in this threemonth period would benefit me for the rest of my life, especially in my 39-year teaching career. I began to enjoy interacting with tourists even more than making the sale. (This would translate later to the fact that the personal connection with one’s students is more important than the subject matter.) I answered the inevitable tourist questions, but I learned to do so patiently. Some of the questions made me want to laugh out loud (as students’ questions would in the future), but I learned restraint. The following were some of my favorites. Tortillas Made by Hand All Day

Using the freshest ingredients and crafting everything from scratch in small batches, Chuy’s makes tortillas the old-fashioned way. Most restaurants use store-bought tortillas, but the people at Chuy’s believe nothing compares to the flavor of handmade. While dim destinations—including those cozy corner booths—increase appetites for fried fare, brighter spots encourage us to eat our veggies. “When it’s well-lit, we’re not only more conscious of what we’re doing, but other people are also slightly more aware of what we’re doing,” says study co-author Dr. Brian Wansink, director of the Cornell Food and Brand Lab and author of Slim by Design. Still, there are a few highlights to eating in dark spaces: We eat more slowly and enjoy meals to a greater degree. Just some food for thought.

The thing that makes Jerome Ito’s story different is that his success is based on raw fish. After serving as head sushi chef at the California behemoth’s cafeteria, Ito struck out on his own and focused on poke, the Hawaiian raw fish salad. At Go Fish Poke Bar in San Jose, Ito serves up seared albacore tuna, salmon, and spicy scallops with inventive ingredients like chilled yam noodles and house-made furikake, a dried Japanese seasoning. Guests can mix and match sauces, seafood, and toppings. (Stretching the definition of poke, Ito even offers a nacho option.) He’s opening a second location this fall—6 miles from Google. Make sure to ask for extra miso crab, a house specialty.

Great talks offer listeners a gift, says the TED curator.

When I bought TED in 2001 and turned it into a nonprofit, I knew something magical might happen if we unlocked it for the rest of the world to enjoy. But the “aha” moment came 10 years ago, when we put a handful of talks online for free. Creating TEDx, which gives free licenses to organizations worldwide, was another part of our effort to spread ideas. From a packed Sydney Opera House to a slum near Nairobi, audiences globally are being informed and inspired. Occasionally, mistakes creep in and we’ll find a video that’s peddling misinformation, but it’s only by granting power to local organizers that we could have achieved this kind of scale. The arrival of online video began a widespread renaissance in public speaking, and it may turn out to be as significant as Gutenberg’s printing press.

OUT TAKES THE BIG MISCONCEPTION We’ve seen speakers get tripped up trying to follow some kind of formula, mimicking other speaker styles, or worse, playing the crowd for cheap applause. That’s not what we want. The audience responds best to the substance of your idea, delivered in a way that’s true to you.

TED talks receive nearly a billion views a year and have been translated into more than 100 languages.

SPEAK UP A good talk has the potential to rewire the brains of those listening, to plant new ideas or replace bad ones. You might reshape an individual’s worldview and change their behavior for years to come.

wenty guests were attending a Passover Seder in Ben Abella’s suburban Philadelphia home when his cellphone rang. Most dinner hosts would have probably ignored the call, particularly while leading a 3,300-year-old ritual celebrating the deliverance of Jews from slavery. But Ben is an emergency physician at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and the clinical research director for Penn’s Center for Resuscitation Science. He sleeps three hours a night and goes 100 miles an hour for the other 21. So he answered the phone. “No problem,” he said, disappearing into the kitchen. “What’s up?” I barely noticed from my end of the table. I was more focused on multiple children melting down and the thunderstorm pounding the windows. As Ben’s brother-in-law, I’ve seen him slip out for november 2016 southwest 63

more impromptu phone chats than a teenage girl. His whole life, as far as I could tell, was No problem, what’s up? A moment later, Ben returned to the table and picked up where he’d left off (“Where were we now, the Ten Plagues?”), only to be interrupted by the phone again. Another trip to the kitchen. None of us knew at the time, but on the other end of the line was a cardiologist at a hospital 14

Somewhere between the matzo ball soup and gefilte fish, my brother-in-law talked the cardiologist through the entire “cooling” procedure. In the morning, Ed got transferred to Penn, was “rewarmed” for eight hours, and underwent a tricky emergency triple-bypass surgery. Two days later, Ed woke from his coma, confused and agitated. He would make a slow but full recovery, and go on to see his two

A patient, a previously healthy 58-year-old financial analyst named Ed Sproull, had collapsed in an elevator and gone into cardiac arrest. Though bystanders had given Ed CPR and revived him with an automated external defibrillator, he was in a coma and critically unstable. As time passed, his chances of survival plummeted. Ed’s wife, who happened to be a nurse, had told the cardiologist about a new post-arrest therapy she had heard about. Doctors at Penn were lowering patients’ temperatures by a few degrees with ice packs or cooling blankets or cold saline. Comatose people were making miraculous recoveries. Could her husband get transferred to Penn? No, he couldn’t. The raging storm had rendered emergency helicopters useless, and packing Ed into an ambulance in this brutal traffic would most likely kill him. “I had to make a quick decision,” recalls Ben. “The clock was ticking. And my brisket was cooking.”

sons graduate from college. “One of the great fears in my life was that I wouldn’t get to see my kids grow up and be who they’re meant to be,” says Ed, now 64. “Now I’m hoping to see grandkids. I’m the luckiest man alive.” He’s not religious, but his wife has been to church every Sunday since. The Ed Sproull Passover story, which happened in 2010, has become part of our family lore. And it explains why my brother-in-law, now 46, doesn’t let random phone calls go to voicemail. BEN GREW UP in Chicago in the 1980s, which for most kids meant worshipping at one of two altars: Michael Jordan or Walter Payton. Instead, he drank deep from the cup of Galileo, chasing it with shots of Newton, Curie, and Einstein—the scientific visionaries whose curiosity and drive he recognized. His third-grade teacher encouraged his parents to transfer him to another school because he had read every science book the school owned, and she had nothing

left to teach him. “I just remember him going into his room to play with his beakers a lot,” says his sister, Sarah, my wife. At 15, Ben began conducting experiments at a University of Chicago laboratory; at 17, he won the Museum of Science and Industry’s Outstanding Young Scientist Award and flew to Oslo for the Nobel Prize ceremony. After earning third place in the Westinghouse Science Talent Search for a genetic-engineering project in which he mapped bacterial chromosomes—just, you know, for the fun of it—Ben landed on the cover of U.S. News & World Report. The inquisitive kid who spent his adolescence practicing science the way some practice jump shots got so good that his high school lobby had a display case devoted to his exploits. “I was proud but embarrassed,” he says. Fast-forward 15 years and he had degrees from Johns Hopkins, Cambridge, and Washington University, and was working at the University of Chicago’s Emergency Resuscitation Center. Frustrated with the lack of options for cardiac arrest patients, he and the center’s director, Lance Becker, began experimenting on mice with a little-known procedure called therapeutic hypothermia. No one’s sure exactly why it works, but lowering the body temperature of a patient in distress is one of those medical oddities that goes way back. Egyptians tried it 5,000 years ago; Hippocrates recommended packing the wounded in ice to reduce bleeding in ancient Greece. In the 1930s, a Philadelphia neurosurgeon named Temple Fay invented a cooling blanket that provided patients with continuous circulation of chilled fluids. A few decades later, pioneering doctors such as Donald Benson and Peter Safar experimented with hypothermia for post-arrest patients. The practice remained on the outskirts of traditional medicine until 2002, when two randomized

studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine demonstrated that cooling patients could provide a significant improvement in post-cardiac arrest survival rates. Many in the field ignored the findings. Others dismissed them outright. But Ben and Lance were undeterred. The Chicago team began refining its own cooling protocol. They found that lowering a post-arrest patient’s temperature from 98.6 degrees to as low as 91 degrees for 12 to 24 hours, and then slowly rewarming him, could protect neural tissue by reducing inflammation and slowing metabolism. Doing so would essentially allow a malfunctioning brain to reset itself before irreversible cell damage could occur. If they were right, mild hypothermia could nearly double the chances of a full neurological recovery with almost no side effects beyond pneumonia. Just months after the 2002 studies, the University of Chicago hospital successfully cooled its first patient. With no cooling devices available, Lance and Ben used Ziploc bags filled with ice on another early patient. “The cooling went great, but the bag leaked water all over the floor of the ICU,” Lance recalls. Other saves soon followed. “More than once, physicians and nurses were convinced a patient was dead, but we were able to save them,” Ben says. “We had a number of survivors who made full recoveries after cooling.” Other departments in the hospital took notice and began to implement the procedure, and Lance’s team plugged it relentlessly. They published studies, ran training courses for nurses, and brought in speakers to explain the procedure—all while simultaneously trying to persuade their skeptical bosses. Their work caught the attention of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. A massive academic research center with a reputation

They recruited Lance, Ben, and other staffers from Chicago and relocated them to West Philadelphia. With Penn’s muscle behind cooling, its “dream team” established a protocol for post-arrest care in multiple Penn hospitals and collaborated with other institutions in southeast Pennsylvania. Ben ran online training courses and lectured everywhere from Singapore to Costa Rica. The American Heart Association officially added therapeutic hypothermia to its CPR guidelines. The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, USA Today, and National Geographic all ran stories on cooling; in 2007, it landed on the cover of Newsweek. Ben’s phone rang at all hours. Calls came from physicians, from panicked family members, from a critical care unit at an Air Force hospital in Balad, Iraq. He answered them all. “One of the things I’ve always romanticized is the image of the country doctor in a small town,” he says. “You know, someone in the village runs in while you’re having coffee in your kitchen and says you’re needed in someone’s house, so you get your bag and run out to the horse and buggy. And all of a sudden you’re doing medicine wherever it’s needed. In another time and place, that would’ve been me.”

nurse at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, performed CPR for 15 minutes and cracked one of Zach’s ribs. An ambulance crew zapped him with a defibrillator and took him to the closest hospital, where, he was later told, the plan was “basically just to let me sit there and see what happened.” His wife, a pediatrician, got him transferred to Penn, where Ben’s team was waiting with cooling pads and chilled intravenous saline. Five days later, Zach woke from his coma, confused about what year it was but otherwise feeling fine. Today he’s back to normal, back to work, and the father of year-old twins. Though he can’t remember anything about his cardiac arrest, he can’t believe his dumb luck. “Here I am in the home city of the pioneers of this new treatment. I wind up at the wrong hospital, and they don’t even know to transfer me,” Zach says. “It was all because I happened to be married to the right person.” Of course, therapeutic hypothermia is an attempt to remove luck from the conversation, but survivors of the procedure tend to spend a lot of time talking about chance. Things like: The stars aligned . . . right place at the right time . . . if the whole thing had happened two minutes earlier . . . They praise brave bystanders who sprang into action or the random chain of events that followed. “Random” is not a word you want associated with cardiology, but the statistics are not pretty. Of the 300,000-plus people who go into cardiac arrest every year in America, fewer than 11 percent leave the hospital alive. Those who do tend to suffer permanent brain damage. Any number of reasons may explain the bleak numbers: Maybe there wasn’t an AED around when it happened, or the ambulance took too long, or the paramedics were undertrained. Other times, the only witness is too afraid to do CPR. The usual explanation, though, is that many

hospitals still don’t know what to do for cardiac arrests. So when someone survives, doctors and patients talk about luck. This drives Ben’s team crazy, because the luck narrative keeps therapeutic hypothermia from entering the mainstream. “People hear these survivor stories and instead of taking steps to make it happen at their hospital, they say, ‘Oh, well, we can’t make this a system. This guy won the lottery. I’m not going to buy a lottery ticket because he just got lucky.’” One hundred years ago, cancer wasn’t a disease that people fought against—it was a word synonymous with death, and any tools used to fight it were seen as mere experiments. Many perceive cardiac arrest to be in that phase now. With treatment evolving and research unfolding before our eyes, a new therapy like cooling can be difficult to accept. Or, perhaps, the reality of scientific discovery is

therapy to spread, for research funding and public awareness to catch up, or a ruling board to develop a uniform national policy for implementing therapeutic hypothermia. “It’s one thing when it’s a therapy that hasn’t been discovered yet,” Ben says. “But this therapy is sitting right there, waiting to be used.” ON A WEDNESDAY morning in March 2015, 50 physicians, nurses,

and students filtered into a conference hall at Rutgers University’s Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. They fiddled with cellphones. Checked watches. Once seated, many crossed their arms. Prove it, their body language suggested. On stage, dwarfed by a giant flatscreen that read “Improving CPR Delivery and In-Hospital Cardiac Arrest Care,” Ben began by tossing softball questions to

Medicine has always suffered from a long lag time between discovery and implementation, and Ben has never been a patient guy. He’s tired of waiting for this new

the crowd. “What’s the best city to have a cardiac arrest in?” he asked. “Seattle,” several responded, aware of the city’s prevalence of AEDs and stellar EMS care. “Smart crowd!” Ben gushed. “In Seattle, survival is as high as 30 percent. It’s clear we could be saving tens of thousands more lives each year.” Nods all around. He spent the next 45 minutes stating his case. He’d given this presentation—equal parts lesson, public relations mission, and pep talk—hundreds of times. By the time he got to the part about cooling, the entire room appeared willing to follow wherever he led. Even the doctors tapping their toes in the back of the auditorium seemed swept up by his passion. “When you see someone who was dead, and now they’re very much alive and enjoying their family, it gets you excited,” Ben says. “At my core, I’m just a big kid who’s wide-eyed and excited to build a Lego set.” The Legos, in this case, happen to

be people with no heartbeat. The PowerPoint blitz is just one of the ways Penn spreads the word. The six faculty members, 40 allied nurses, and more than 20 staff and research coordinators affiliated with Penn’s Center for Resuscitation Science also run webinars and boot camps. And every other year, medical leaders from around the world gather for an international hypothermia symposium to learn cooling. It seems to be working. While lecturing in Seoul, South Korea, in 2015, Ben was amazed to come across an emergency physician who, in 2009, had attended Penn’s first course and returned home so energized that he created a similar course. “Now most of the major hospitals in Seoul do the therapy,” Ben tells me. “There may be thousands of Koreans alive today because of what we’ve done.” Stateside, progress takes more patience. Sarah Perman, a Penn fellow from 2011 to 2013, pushes

therapeutic hypothermia from her post as an assistant professor in the emergency department at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. “It’s building slowly, but people are receptive,” says Sarah. “Some of the senior folks have seen dismal outcomes for years, and all of a sudden there’s this ray of hope. And to the young guard, it’s almost normal.” As the Rutgers speech ended, the crowd hummed with enthusiasm. Many remained in their seats, chattering, debating. Several surrounded Ben to ask questions, and he encouraged each person to stay in touch. “If you have a patient that needs help at three in the morning, the phone is always next to me,” he said, flashing that country-doctor smile. “Call me anytime.” And they do. She’s transformed the dining room at Family Gateway, a homeless shelter in downtown Dallas, into a perfect—if slightly unconventional—place

for a party. Round cafeteria tables are covered with balloon-patterned tablecloths. Red streamers hang by the door. Signs proclaiming “Let’s put the art in party” line the walls. And around the room, craft stations are set up for the 35 kids waiting eagerly on the other side of the door. When that door finally swings open, the kids and their families spill into the room.

“Is it your birthday this month?” a volunteer asks. She shakes her head. She just wants to peek. Like any good event planner, Paige knows there’s an art to pulling off the perfect party. There’s the venue to choose, decorations to buy, a menu to plan. When she started her

own events company in Dallas in 2005, it meant deciding details for weddings and bar and bat mitzvahs. But for almost five years now, these birthday parties have been her event of choice. In 2008, on a flight to visit a friend in Cincinnati, Paige stumbled upon a Parents magazine article about children’s parties.

Five months pregnant with her daughter, she began dreaming up Lizzie’s future birthdays. But when she opened another magazine soon after, she was faced with a photo of a boy with sunken eyes. “All I could think was, What about him? This child will never feel celebrated the way I know I can celebrate Lizzie.”

Adults-only camps make your rock star dreams possible. “We’ve had students who’ve come for a few years and are now out there gigging, some for their livelihood,” says Alice Schiller, founder of guitar intensives, held each summer in scenic Bar Harbor, Maine (near Acadia National Park). Lessons are geared toward all levels: Learn everything from basic strumming patterns to advanced country blues, in classes of no more than 12. The week also includes lobster bakes and open mic nights. “The whole experience is an immersion into music that nourishes the spirit as well as skills,” Alice says. “It’s a time to dig in without outside pressures.”

now teams with 30 different homeless and transitional living facilities in 12 cities across the country, from San Francisco to Washington, D.C. Paige, her five team members, and an army of volunteers have celebrated more than 3,000 birthdays, and in 2014, Paige stopped juggling her events company and focused on The Birthday Party Project full time. Each month, TBPP and its partner organizations host a party and invite all the minors currently living in each shelter. The birthday kids receive a $30 present, and volunteers, called “birthday enthusiasts,” help run different activities. Everyone gets a cupcake. Behind the scenes, Paige and party manager Annie Mullins—referred to as the “director of magic”—carefully plan themes: “Art Party” in August,

“Thankful” in November, and “Winter Wonderland” in December. For the most part, they stay the same every year, but specific activities can change depending on the number of kids at the shelter. “Homelessness,” Paige says, “looks a lot of different ways. With domestic violence agencies, for example, families move in and out so quickly, so we

have to continue the dialogue of who’s there now.” Sometimes that means the guest list shrinks; other times it means last-minute work to make sure a new birthday kid has a present. But Paige says these challenges are minor compared to the obstacles faced by families every day. At one recent party, a mother approached Paige. Her family had moved into the shelter the night before, and her three daughters had birthdays coming up, three months in a row. “She grabbed me and said, ‘You’re the birthday woman?’ And she held me and just cried and thanked me. I thought, I’m not the hero in this.” This year Family Gateway, the Dallas shelter, will serve more than 400 families (about 825 children) as they work to find long-term housing. At first glance, their dining room isn’t an ideal party venue—kitchen appliances fill one side of the

But the off-key rendition of “Happy Birthday,” the twin boys playing keep-away with a blue balloon, and the raucous cheers that erupt when that wrapping paper is finally, gleefully, ripped off, make you look again. For an hour on the third Thursday of every month, it’s exactly right. When the party is over, volunteers gather to share their favorite moment of the night. For one, it was the camera: how the kids struck poses, hamming it up, asking again and again, “Can you take my picture?” Every time, the answer was “yes.” Along with being a birthday enthusiast, you can pitch in by “sharing” your birthday. she was a thoughtful, selfless woman who made other people’s burdens her own. She hardly took the time to sit, much less treat herself. On my wedding day, she declined makeup and hairstyling and instead spent the afternoon ironing bridesmaids’ dresses and crafting centerpieces, slipping into her own unflashy gown moments before my brother walked her down the aisle. That night after the reception, when I left to catch the last bus to the hotel, she was still in the kitchen washing glassware. When I became an adult, I started treating her myself, insisting she board a plane and meet me at a destination I’d picked for our mother-daughter vacation: Key West, Florida. San Juan, Puerto Rico. Port Aransas, Texas. I loved my mom the most on those trips. Away from her typical responsibilities, she was relaxed, open, and excited

about new places and experiences. She was a stranger from the woman I knew back home, where she was mired in an eternal flurry of cooking and cleaning. In February 2013 I booked a suite at San Diego’s famous Hotel del Coronado, a place with poolside cabanas and a $93 brunch, where welldressed servers deliver piña coladas to daybeds in the sand. I urged my brother to join us, and Mom flew from Atlanta, her thinning hair covered by a blue headscarf. I didn’t know then that this trip would be our last. She was in the midst of ongoing chemotherapy treatments, but she treated breast cancer like any other event in her life—it was a project, something she was in control of. In the beginning, she bought a pink three-ring binder and dutifully filed away the piles of paperwork that

came with every doctor’s visit. She insisted on driving herself to and from appointments. And rather than dropping everything to travel the world, she worked. In San Diego, we zigzagged through the zoo, watched whales from the deck of a 90-foot boat, and laughed until we cried pedaling a four-person surrey bike through the streets of Coronado. At a café in Ocean Beach, over burritos and fresh-squeezed

juices, I told her and my brother I was pregnant. Just over a year later, on April 21, 2014—four days shy of her 59th birthday—my mother sat up in bed for the last time. I spoon-fed her final meal to her: vanilla ice cream with Hershey’s chocolate syrup on top. Moments later, I wiped away tears as I spoon-fed oatmeal baby cereal to my 5-month-old daughter, Avery. The next day, my mom’s eyes stayed closed and her

breathing slowed. I briefly left her side to warm a bottle for Avery. When I came back, she was gone. Afterward, I responded like my mother would have, diving back into my harried routine: Get up, drive to daycare, work, drive to daycare again, wash bottles, repeat. My husband, Dan, and I saw Avery for an hour in the morning, and an hour or two at night. The weeks went by, and as our daughter grew more animated, we grew more discontented. About that time, an idea started bubbling in our minds. What if we just said no? No to climbing the career ladder, no to counting vacation days, no to spending $1,000 a month on daycare so we could maintain a dual-income household. And yes to quitting our jobs, selling our house, and venturing to the American Southwest to see as many national parks—and beautiful, interesting places between them—as we could. In the evenings after we put Avery to bed, we’d lay out our map of the National Park System and sketch possible routes. We charted a course that took us from West Texas’ Big Bend to Arizona’s Saguaro, and on to Joshua Tree, Sequoia, Kings Canyon, and Yosemite in California. We’d drive east to the Grand Canyon before hitting Zion, Bryce Canyon, and Arches in Utah. After swinging by Mesa Verde, our final stop would be Great Sand Dunes in southern Colorado. And then we did it. At a time in our daughter’s life when we were supposed to be planting our feet in a ZIP code with a good school district, we pushed off into the great wide open—unemployed, unbound, and unworried. Bedtimes be damned. Over the next six weeks, we spent our days hiking, biking, eyeing wildlife, and gazing at grand expanses, staring off into the distance with mouths agape and repeating things like, “Man, it’s big out here.” More often than not, we could step outside at night and see 180 degrees of star-studded sky.

And then we did it. We pushed off into the great wide open—unemployed, unbound, and unworried. Bedtimes be damned. Once, early on in the trip, we found ourselves whispering for no reason, an unintentional reaction to the pure silence around us. And though we had planned a route, we often allowed our surroundings to inform our next move. Should we sing along to “Rawhide” at Ebenezer’s Barn and Grill cowboy dinner show? Yes. Should we load Avery, 17 months by then, into the baby backpack and hike 6 miles into the Grand Canyon? Yes. Should we tack three more national parks onto our itinerary? Yes. Yes. Yes. Along the way, we grew to appreciate things we’d once taken for granted. You don’t know the joy of a hot shower—even if it’s in an unsavory campground bathroom—until you’ve wiped away two days’ worth of sweat and

Sonoran dust from your body. Fatigued from physical activity, we ate with the appetite of teenage boys and slept like tired, old dogs. So many times we just stopped and breathed the air. In the mornings, rather than hustling to get out the door on time, we plopped Avery in our bed and let her babble and cover us with raspberries. We walked along trails together, stopping every few feet so she could scoop up a handful of dirt and send it dissipating into the air. At night, we read to her by the light of a headlamp until she fell asleep. And then we’d close our eyes too, pausing to reflect on the day, the trip, and the exciting unknown of our future. On the first anniversary of my mom’s death, the three of us gathered around a campfire amidst

towering Jeffrey pines, just beyond the south shore of Lake Tahoe. Avery sat on Dan’s lap, while I sunk into my camp chair, zipped my sweatshirt a little tighter, and wished she were there—wished she were alive and healthy and could fly to Vegas or L.A. or Tucson to join us. I would’ve had to pester her to make the trip, I know, but she would’ve loved it. When I looked over at Avery, her head the only part of her not wrapped in a blanket, her cheeks were flush from the chill, and she was struggling to defy heavy eyelids. It was the kind of quiet moment that has the power to push everything else aside, the kind of moment I vowed I’d make time for, the kind I wish my mom had enjoyed more of. why do you feel at home on stage? The first time I ever stood up in front of people and performed was when I was 10. I sang two songs in church and was booked solid from then on. In my hometown in West Virginia it was like, “You’d be great at the PTA fundraiser,” or, “The Lions Club is having a luncheon. Can you learn a few more songs?” Next thing I knew, I was 20, and you couldn’t faze me because I’d already made every mistake in the book. Now I’m almost more comfortable on stage than I am in real life.
