Gary’s Greeting

We’re Going Places Southwest Airlines took to the skies in 1971, serving three Texas cities with three airplanes. At the time, there was no such thing as a low-cost airline in the U.S., and our humble beginnings were full of challenges. Most people are surprised to learn that today Southwest carries more Customers than any other U.S. airline, and we have the fourth-largest fleet in the world. Safe to say, we’re not that little ol’ airline from Texas anymore. From underdog to one of the world’s most admired companies (24 consecutive years and counting on Fortune’s annual list), Southwest took off and never looked back. Today, we serve 99

destinations located in the U.S. and 10 additional countries; we have more than 700 airplanes; we operate 4,000 daily flights; we have 57,000 Employees; and we carried 120 million Customers last year alone. And we have no intention of slowing down. One of the most exciting developments on the horizon is our next destination—Hawaii! Last year, we announced our plans to serve the Aloha State, and we’ve been hard at work on those preparations ever since. A lot of work goes into operating flights to this beautiful destination, most importantly becoming certified for ETOPS, or Extended Operations,

by the Federal Aviation Administration. Gaining the FAA’s certificate for ETOPS requires extensive documentation, training, planning, and validation. This work is progressing as planned, and we remain on track to begin selling service to Hawaii by the end of the year—so save up your Rapid Rewards points! Although our flight schedule isn’t ready for prime time, we have announced our initial four airports in the Hawaiian Islands: Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) in Honolulu, Kahului Airport (OGG) on Maui, Lihue Airport (LIH) on Kauai, and Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport (KOA) on the leeward side of the Island of Hawaii. The initial mainland gateway cities that will offer nonstop service (pending required regulatory approvals) to Hawaii are San Jose International Airport, Oakland, Sacramento, and San Diego. The excitement for Southwest service to Hawaii is palpable—both from our Employees and our Customers. One of the most rewarding parts of my job is to see our network grow and bring Southwest service to more people. Oh, yeah, we’re going places.

Llegando lejos

Our Star

“I instantly fell in love with airplanes, flying, and Southwest.” —DARIN SANDERS, MANAGER, INFLIGHT TRAINING It was love at first flight for Darin Sanders, who, at 10 years old, flew Southwest to visit his relatives. He was captivated by the plane and knew he wanted to work for the Company someday—and the rest is history. He started as an Intern in 1995 before working as a Flight Attendant and on the ground at our Dallas Headquarters. These days, Darin is a Manager at Southwest University, where he helps oversee the training program for Flight Attendants and works hard to ensure they graduate as Hospitality experts. Like many of his fellow Employees, Darin is a travel and aviation enthusiast, and one of his favorite memories is when he was selected as part of the Crew that delivered a new Boeing aircraft from Seattle to Dallas. We’re lucky to have you, Darin, and we’re so glad you took that first flight! —Sarah Mattina, Communications & Outreach SPEAK UP “I’ve always had opinions, but when I was younger, I struggled to have a voice. Leaders here have helped me recognize my value in sharing my opinion and being direct.” JOB PERKS “We get to see People start without knowing anything about airlines or airplanes, and in four weeks, they’ve graduated and are competent, confident Flight Attendants.”

To thank Darin for his work and dedication, Penn & Teller is proud to give him two tickets to see the show in Las Vegas. Congratulations, Darin!

“I’m at that place in life where I’m always trying to gain new experiences and see new cultures.” —BRETT ELDREDGE, MUSICIAN

Country music star Brett Eldredge’s latest hit song and U.S. tour might be all about “The Long Way,” but when it comes to air travel, he’s all about the reliability and connectivity of Southwest Airlines. Even though he travels regularly for his shows, Brett still considers traveling to be his favorite hobby. Not only is he an A-List Preferred member, but he’s also a longtime Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards® Credit Cardmember—in July, he even became the first customer to upgrade to the new Priority Card. Brett makes good use of the Rapid Rewards points he earns, and thanks to no blackout dates, he can sneak away to rest his vocal cords whenever he has a few unexpected days for vacation. Community Outreach WITH PURPOSE

Arise, Looptworks, and Rethreaded all focus on helping others.

Gifts That Give Back

Help make a positive impact with these Southwest initiatives. At Southwest, our Heart doesn’t just give back—it also gives forward, and we encourage our Customers to do the same whenever possible. As you prepare for the holiday season, we’d love for you to consider giving back and supporting local communities while you shop. Check out these great gift options that let you celebrate your loved ones while making a positive impact. REPURPOSE WITH PURPOSE

As a leading global citizen, we’re committed to minimizing our environmental impact while maximizing our social impact. That’s why we launched our

Repurpose with Purpose program in 2013. This initiative upcycles, downcycles, and recycles hundreds of thousands of pounds of discarded leather into unique products with the help of our partner organizations, including the three mentioned below. Arise Veteran Foundation provides art instruction and skill-building programs for youth, veterans, seniors, and other disadvantaged groups. TRAVEL & REAL ESTATE

Meet Vacasa,

the One-StopShop for All Your Vacation Rental Needs Upper Pines Lodge - Warren, VT

Vacasa is making vacation homeownership easier than ever. Supercharged by online booking platforms such as HomeAway and Airbnb, demand for alternative lodging has set the oncesleepy vacation rental industry on a trajectory to be worth $194 billion by 2021. Shaping the future of this rapidly changing industry is Portland, Oregon-based Vacasa, a next-gen hospitality company that’s emerging as a leader for all things vacation rental.

Local Teams, Global Network

Caring for over 11,000 properties around the world, Vacasa is North America’s largest manager of vacation properties. The company utilizes sophisticated marketing techniques to maximize bookings while their machine-learning-driven pricing algorithm adjusts rates in real time so that homeowners never leave money on the table. This technology is complemented by personal service from exceptional local hospitality professionals who care for guests and vacation homeowners in every Vacasa market. “We built our reputation by delivering better care and higher revenue,” says Vacasa founder and CEO Eric Breon, who started the company in 2009. “Now we’re there for vacation homeowners through the full lifecycle of their properties— from helping them purchase a home to full-service rental management and making it easy for them to sell.”

Connecting Buyers and Sellers

In July 2018, Vacasa launched Vacasa Real Estate to help connect vacation home buyers and sellers with local agents. With access to rental performance data, a steady stream of buyer leads, and the largest inventory of vacation homes in the country, the company is uniquely positioned to streamline the process of buying and selling investment properties—and to simplify the experience of renting them out.

End-To-End Management

Vacasa’s data-informed interior design experts specialize in upgrading furnishings and remodeling vacation rental properties to optimize bookings. Vacasa’s local teams handle permitting, tax registration and other details, with comprehensive property management services covering everything from bookings and home care to 24/7 guest service. In addition to their experienced local teams, Vacasa has a central office staffed with specialists. “Vacasa is an impressive operation with a unique value proposition,” says Jack Reynolds, owner of Upper Pines Lodge in Warren, Vermont. “They employ local teams to provide onsite property management, cleaning and vendor supervision in vacation destinations around the world. My local area manager and head of housekeeping are tireless, and diligent to a fault. Both are responsive to texts, calls and emails. When a guest damaged my fancy gas grill, they just said, ‘Don’t worry about a thing. It’s been replaced.’ They genuinely care about and for my home.” Online booking technology has made vacation rentals an increasingly popular alternative to hotels. With guest demand growing rapidly, Vacasa’s one-stop-shop model enables more people than ever to effortlessly enjoy the rewards of owning a vacation home. “We’re connecting the dots to make vacation home ownership simpler and more profitable for everyone,” says Breon. It’s the dawn of an exciting, more accessible age for the vacation rental industry—and Vacasa has positioned itself right at the center. years) and I were traveling to Florida for my father’s final Army reunion. When we arrived to check in, it was utter chaos (on our part). We had a wheelchair, car seats, strollers, and food boxes to be checked. The agent was remarkable, handling each of us with a genuine smile and a gracious attitude. After she got the babies their boarding passes, she left her station to speak with my father, who was sitting in his wheelchair with his WWII hat on.

UNQUESTIONED KINDNESS

On a recent flight, flight attendant Jennifer Clark kept passengers entertained with a trivia game. My son kept trying unsuccessfully to answer the questions. When the game was over, Jennifer made a point to come over to him and ask him a question he could answer. He was pleased to get it correct. Unbeknownst to Jennifer, my son is on the autism spectrum, and as a young adult, most discount him and move on. Actions such as this make traveling with Southwest extremely rewarding. I also witnessed Jennifer speaking with other passengers

She spoke to him for a few minutes and thanked him for his service. When we arrived at our gate, every employee knew Daddy’s name and personally thanked him. When we boarded the plane, they placed him and me in the first row. The pilot came over and thanked Daddy, as did the flight attendants. Before takeoff, after the pilot’s usual welcome, he announced, “Today, we are carrying a very special American hero. His name is Frank Bertino, and he is seated in the front seat. He is a member of the 66th Infantry Division and is traveling to Florida to attend his final Army reunion.” The plane erupted with cheers and applause. The pilot said, “On your way out, please stop to see Mr. Bertino if you can.” Everyone on the plane stopped to shake my daddy’s hand. I am extremely thankful that I was there to share this moment with my family and my 94-year-old dad, my hero. Thank you, Southwest. —Lenore Angelo

and making their experience positive. I’m a frequent traveler and would love to have her on the flight crew for all my travels. —Gretchen Swayzer MAKING MEMORIES

My husband and I flew to West Palm Beach, Florida, to meet our sons and their girlfriends. Our kids were flying from Denver and we were flying from Austin, and we decided to surprise them by getting on their connecting flight in Atlanta. Since we were already on the plane (it originally came from Dallas), after everyone deplaned, we asked flight attendant Danielle Wood if we could move up to the front of the plane so we could surprise our kids. She helped us move and brought in Captain Mike Reskovac and flight attendants Diego Deleon and Eric Wilder to hatch a plan that would really surprise the kids. Captain Mike got our kids’ names and rounded them up in the waiting area with a creative story while we hid in the cockpit. As Captain Mike brought our kids on the plane, they opened the cockpit door

and … surprise! Needless to say, there was a lot of laughter, tears, and hugs. I’ve never seen my kids more thrilled. Of course they thought Mom must really be special to pull off such a feat. Southwest never ceases to amaze me. Thank you for making memories! —Heather Bailey WINGS AND MORE!

My wife, two children (ages 5 and 7), and I flew to San Diego for a family vacation, and on one of our flights, we met flight attendant Pam Miller. She was very friendly and accommodating. Halfway through the flight, she struck up a conversation with my son and me, asking us where we were traveling. Toward the end, I asked if the plane had any souvenir wings for my kids. After a few moments, Pam returned to tell us that the flight did not have any, but asked me to write down my address. She also arranged for our kids to meet the pilots. After we returned home, a package came. Inside, Pam had a bag of gifts for each kid. She not only sent

wings, but also other Southwest gifts. Both kids were over the moon. Pam made the flight wonderful and also made a long-lasting impression on us. —Luke Roberts THE HAPPIEST KID IN THE WORLD

Recently, my almost 7-year-old son left for his second annual trip to his grandpa’s house. He has flown alone before, but this year he’ll be gone for much longer, so he was very upset to leave. He got on the plane crying, and when Captain Billy Wilson heard him, he took him up to the cockpit and let him sit in the driver’s seat. He was overjoyed. Five minutes after I helplessly sent him on the plane, Captain Billy came out and told me what happened, showed me the pictures he took, and asked if he could send them to me. I broke down in tears. I was so appreciative of him for capturing this moment for me when I couldn’t be there to experience it. Thanks for having such incredible pilots who made my son the happiest kid in the world. I am forever grateful. —Jenn Oaks

Dear Reader, This winter travel issue celebrates the four elements of earth, air, fire, and water. I’d add a fifth: beast. All my most memorable downtimes have included wildlife, intentionally or otherwise. In Florida’s J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge, my wife and I witnessed thousands of horseshoe crabs mating. (It’s pretty PG, what with all the armor.) On a trail in New Hampshire, I got smacked on the back of the head by a territorial goshawk. In Yellowstone one November day, a bison roused me from a nap beside a thermal pool. It was the smell—like that of a middle schooler’s gym locker—that woke me up. While cross-country skiing, I almost collided with a moose. And once, while I was kayaking in a lagoon in Belize, an enormous crocodile burst out of the shallow water less than 20 yards from me. Then there was the beaver that swam up behind me when I was standing in a canoe and smacked

its tail, causing me to lose my balance and fall on top of the beaver. The beaver swam off in a huff, while I was just glad it wasn’t a crocodile. OK, so these encounters tend to be unintended. But not entirely. There’s a reason they mostly involve quiet boats, cross-country skiing, and lying still. If you avoid crashing or roaring, creatures come close to you. I’ve been checked out by curious baby otters, loons, and bear cubs; calm alligators, talkative owls, investigative coywolves, meditative sea turtles, and at least one shark. The list is endless, as I keep adding to it. Why? Well, shouldn’t any vacation offer a refreshing element, even if it only entails the hot pursuit of an untried cocktail (see page 42)? For me, that refreshment comes from the rarest element of all: the element of adventure.

Dear Editor,

I’m sending this note from 30,000 feet in the air because I loved Matt Crossman’s love letter to Linville Gorge in the August issue. As a former TV reporter and storyteller, I appreciate great writing. I felt I was with the author trekking through the trails and enjoying that truly awe-inspiring cup of joe. I’m from North Carolina, but the Linville Gorge is news to me—I’ll have to travel down there next time I’m in the Old North State.

BACK TO NATURE

I loved Matt Crossman's article on Linville Gorge. I hiked the trails in Pisgah National Forest many times during the 12 years I lived in North Carolina and vividly remember those in Linville Gorge. I now live in California where there are many arduous hikes, but none with the lush greenery that I associate with Pisgah and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Thank you for the read.

Bharath Iyengar OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA

/ It sounds like you find the best

I loved Matt Crossman’s Linville Gorge article. I was there with my family when I was about 12, my brother a bit younger. We got lost on the way down and getting out was a real struggle—we didn’t make it back up until after dark. But we all remember absolutely loving it. We swam in every swimming hole that we passed. It’s a

Walnut Creek CVB.indd 34 1 F1_feedback_MG.indd

magical place. After I read the article, I looked up the mileage and it’s about 10 hours from me by car; Matt is lucky to live so close.

Chris Smith PHILADELPHIA

/ We hope you make it back there someday soon, Chris. FAMILIAR PLACES

On my flight back home to Nashville from Chicago, I couldn’t believe it—an article about Linville Gorge? No way! Matt Crossman did an amazing job painting the gorge. I’ve sent a message to my parents who live in Linville Falls, near the gorge, and I can’t wait for them to read it. My wife and I just moved from Asheville to Nashville, but will be returning often to see family. Anyway, thanks for the article. It was great seeing one of my favorite places spotlighted nationally.

PERSONAL BEST

I feel compelled to write and thank you for Kimberley Lovato’s article, “Napa Rally” [August 2018]. I have no roots in Napa, but I do have a 16-year-old son who is a baseball player with aspirations of being a professional, so the way Kimberley captured the host families’ story and the whole process of creating the team and getting past the many hurdles really hit me. I enjoyed her writing and the story very much.

FIELD OF DREAMS

What those guys have done in Napa is really special, and Kimberley Lovato totally captured it in her piece. Those ballplayers are chasing the dream of all dreams, and I give credit to her for crafting the imagery of it all.

Dan Chevallard CARLSBAD, CALIFORNIA

/ Good ballplayers and great writers are hard to find. FAN FAVORITE

I loved “Napa Rally.” I grew up in New York and am both a Yankees fan and a San Francisco Giants fan (my dad had been a New York Giants fan before the franchise moved and made me one, too). My favorite players were Tito Fuentes, Willie Mays, and Mickey Mantle, of course. The fact that Tito Jr. is managing the Napa Silverados brought me back to my childhood and warmed my heart. I’m also in the wine business, so it made it all the more special. Thank you for

making the two-hour delay at SFO well worth the wait! Wonderful reading, thank you.

NOVEL IDEA

I enjoyed reading Kimberley Lovato’s story, “Napa Rally.” It was filled with heart, hope, humility, and all those things that baseball and small-town America are supposed to be. The Napa Silverados sound like a team right out of the pages of a W.P. Kinsella novel. My two sons and I will no doubt make a trip up to Napa next spring to catch a game or two and celebrate our nation’s pastime in perhaps its purest form.

Andrew Pfeffer CHANNEL ISLANDS HARBOR, CALIFORNIA

/ Isn’t it funny how sports memories—and allegiances—can last a lifetime? SWEET MEMORIES

I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed Kimberley Lovato’s article on the Napa baseball team. I’m a longtime baseball player, and she succeeded in putting me right back on the field. I’m not sure how it hit the non-player or fan, but I confess I had to put the magazine down several times to wipe my eyes due to the memories Kimberley brought back. Thank you for painting a great picture of an owner, a team, and a community.

The average bag of chips is

43% air.

It’s not just your imagination. After testing 14 different brands, Kitchen Cabinet Kings crunched the numbers and found that the average snack-to-slack ratio in your favorite bag of chips is pretty dissatisfying. (A note: It’s not technically air in your bags. Instead, nitrogen is used to prevent chips from going stale and to keep them from, well, chipping.) Cheetos led the pack with bags that were 59 percent nitrogen, while Fritos’ pouches were just 19 percent. Feeling cheated? We’re here if you need to air your grievances.

IN THE CHIPS Here’s something to snack on: The study found that the average amount of chips in a bag has increased 27 percent since 2015.

When Justin Stubblefield turned 16, he asked for two beehives in lieu of a car. “Everyone I knew was getting that traditional first job, and I wanted to do something with my love for animals,” he says. “So I thought, Why not beekeeping? It started with me and my brother selling honey on the side of the road.” Now, at 24, the Florida native has grown his family business to include partnerships with other local beekeepers and the University of Florida, which houses a honey bee research lab committed to conservation. His line of products has expanded too and now includes everything from bourbon-infused honey to whipped honey made with organic orange zest.

Cactus Cosmo

Nestled in the Sonoran Desert, the 140-acre Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix features more than 50,000 plants for visitors to discover. But if it’s not enough just to see the flora, guests can venture to Gertrude’s restaurant, where the cocktail menu showcases beverages with a botanical bent. Found inside the garden, the eatery offers this take on the classic cosmopolitan, adding potassium-packed cactus water and introducing earthy notes through the fruit of prickly pears. After all that exploration in the garden, a refreshing drink sounds like just deserts.

MAKE IT ↑ In a martini shaker filled with ice, add 2½ ounces Dripping Springs Texas Orange Vodka, 3 ounces True Nopal cactus water, 1 ounce cranberry juice, ¼ ounce Monin Desert Pear syrup, and ¼ ounce fresh lemon juice. Cover, shake well, and then strain into a martini glass. Garnish with an orange wheel.

Prepping for a holiday party? Try a sprig of rosemary with a cranberry on the stem as the garnish.

Fried Pickles

Spears, chips, or slices? There’s an ongoing debate among fried pickle aficionados about the optimal shape for the salty breaded treat, but it seems almost everyone can agree that they’re a deeply satisfying snack. Upscale joints like Jacob’s Pickles in New York City are also proof that pickles are no longer just a sports bar staple. The restaurant batters up its signature “hot sour” cucumbers (marinated alongside chiles de arbol) to create a palate-pleasing experience that’s both sweet and spicy, sour and savory. Regulars recommend pairing the morsels with the spicy brine margarita, and, well, we can’t argue with that logic.

LIGHT BITES

There’s no need to pretend you were just reaching for that report. According to a survey of 2,000 workers conducted by Eggland’s Best, nearly half of us stash snacks at our desks. Along with staving off hunger, grabbing a treat can help relieve stress, battle boredom, and spark a much-needed burst of energy. The poll also revealed a few of the most popular munchies to keep at the office: nuts, energy bars, hard-boiled eggs, and fruit. Oh, just one last thing—are you going to share that?

The survey also found that, on average, workers take two snack breaks a day.

Burrow

Buying a high-end sofa doesn’t have to be a hassle. Here’s how co-founder Stephen Kuhl describes the furniture company: When I moved to Philadelphia to start business school, I had to buy a sofa. I rented a truck, drove to the store, paid $600, and spent a couple hours assembling it. I complained to my eventual co-founder, Kabeer Chopra, and he said, “Oh, that’s nothing.” We laughed about our experiences but thought there had to be a better way. We found the main reason sofas cost so much is because of their size— they’re expensive to pack and

ship. So we reverse-engineered a sofa that could come apart, fit into compact boxes, and be reassembled without tools. Because Burrow is modular, customers can change their sofa to fit their home and lifestyle. They can order another seat or a sectional, or switch up the armrests and legs. We didn’t want to reinvent the couch, but we doubled down on comfort and craftsmanship. The fact that you can get the sofa faster and for less is great, but the product you live with every day has to be great, too.

WORK Solution

For more, visit buymeonce.com or pick up Button’s book, A Life Less Throwaway.

Buy Into a Less Cluttered Life

Real retail therapy comes from more purposeful purchases, says Tara Button, founder of BuyMeOnce. What is BuyMeOnce? “It’s like Consumer Reports for the longest-lasting stuff. We research and compare products in every category, and have found more than 1,000 sustainable items— from a pen with enough ink to last a lifetime to a super durable soccer ball that never deflates. The idea is that buying and using something for life is an amazing solution, both for the individual and the planet.” 52 Southwest November 2018

F2_solutions_MW.indd 52

Where do you start if you want to adopt this buying philosophy? “Look around you and identify the things that you would consider worthy of passing down to your grandchildren. How wonderful would it be if everything in your home were like that? Determining what you want to achieve and what to spend your time on will also help you decide which purchases are helpful and which are superfluous. Part of my life’s purpose is that I want to explore, so buying a bicycle is great at helping me to experience the world. Buying jewelry, on the other hand, wouldn’t be, but it could be important to those who prioritize self-expression.” What should you consider before buying a new item? “First, ask yourself whether you want it just because it’s being dangled in front of you. If it’s something you need, determine if it’s the best possible version. Is it made from the best materials? Has it been made in a way that reflects your values? Is it something that will go out of style quickly, or is it in line with your true taste? Finally, what is the manufacturer’s after-care policy? At BuyMeOnce, we aim to find makers who back up their products with free repairs, because that means they’re committed to keeping their products useful for as long as possible.” ILLUSTRATION BY ROB WILSON

Chill Out

Manage your temperature with this personal thermostat.

If your office is always in a tussle over the temperature, Embr Wave ($299) can keep things from getting too heated. Instead of reaching for a fan or a space heater, simply press a button on the wearable, which directly warms or cools the skin on your wrist—by focusing on an area with a higher density of temperature-sensitive nerve endings, Embr Wave helps you feel more comfortable without adjusting your core temperature. The control bar even lets you choose the degree of change you want. Pretty cool, right?

THE IN-BET WEEN We celebrate the starts and finishes, but the ups and downs in the middle don’t get a lot of discussion. [With my book,] I wanted to chronicle the insights that people use to get them through.

When you embark on a creative, long-term pursuit, that vision at the end of the tunnel isn’t enough to keep you going inch by inch—you need something else. I founded Behance, now one of the largest online networks of creative professionals. Early on, we didn’t have revenue or customers. To keep the team engaged, I might say, “We’re going to fix this many bugs in two weeks, and then go out for a special dinner.” Another example: We typed “Behance” into Google every day and it would ask, “Do you mean enhance?” We aimed to get the product out there so Google would stop thinking we were a mistake. Six months later, our engineer typed in “Behance” and we popped up.

spring. But as any outdoor enthusiast will tell you, the colder months are made for adventure. Inspired by fire, air, earth, and water, we built this year’s winter travel guide around activities that make us not only want to brave the elements, but also welcome winter with open arms. Whether it’s conquering the downhill on a ski bike, reveling in a colossal ice castle, or sipping a hot toddy on a rooftop, there’s something here for everyone. Of course, winter’s joys go beyond pure adrenaline. To capture the quiet allure of the season, we asked five writers to share mo-

Arenal Volcano on the horizon, Nayara Springs’ spa (below), guests in the Costa Rican rainforest (left)

Sleep at the Base of an Active Volcano Nayara Springs has amenities you’d expect from a luxury stay—an infinity pool, a world-renowned spa—but what sets the boutique property apart is its location inside Arenal Volcano National Park. Hike across dried lava fields left over from a 1968 eruption, conquer roaring Class IV rapids on the Sarapiqui River, or get to know the local fauna. Last year, the resort partnered with a wildlife rescue center to build an on-site habitat for sloths, and guests can get up close by volunteering to help feed the three-toed residents. Other highlights include birding expeditions and a nocturnal, wild frog–watching tour.

y husband, dennis, and I have birthdays less than a week apart. When they roll around each November, the leaves in Middle Tennessee are ablaze with color and the nights are crisp—perfect camping conditions. Which is why an overnight with a few close friends at Henry Horton State Park, 50 miles south of Nashville, was how we planned to celebrate in 2014. As the weekend drew near, though, we hit two snags. First, unseasonably cold temperatures crept into the forecast. I thought, It’s nothing an extra blanket and a pair of long johns can’t solve. Second, we learned we were pregnant. To say we were thrown for a loop is putting it mildly. In our 13 years of marriage, Dennis and I had talked about children from time to time, but producing (and providing for) a functional human seemed daunting for two anxiety Olympians like us, and we’d quietly settled into “DINK” life—dual income, no kids. We considered canceling the trip altogether, but ultimately forged ahead in a kind of daze. Whether we did it to avoid flaking out on our friends or to try and distract ourselves, it’s hard to say. No matter the reason, I trudged into the woods dreading the night ahead of me. It was frigid, and I felt ill and in over my head. CONTINUED ON PAGE 74

Former North American snowkite champion Tyler Brown founded the Sierra Snowkite Center in California so others could experience the thrill of “catching air. Snowkiting, which is similar to water-based kiteboarding, takes skiing and snowboarding to the next level with the addition of a wind-powered kite. No prior kiting experience is required (although you should be proficient enough on skis to tackle a green run). Lessons include the kite and plenty of practice time in a snowy meadow before you climb in elevation.

rowing up in Minnesota, a winter day had three possible descriptions: It was about to snow, it was actively snowing, or it had just finished snowing. In this constant snowbound state, my siblings and I looked out the window at the falling fluff and saw more than just the possibility of a day off school. We saw “snow pudding,” a treat that, unlike every other dessert, we could eat any time. Even—and especially—in the morning. My mom got the idea from an episode of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. She gave us each a bowl and we would compete to see who could bring back the tallest mound. Once inside, we’d follow the recipe—6 cups snow, 1 cup milk, ½ cup sugar, ½ teaspoon vanilla—and whisk it into an almost gelato-like cream. Ideal pudding snow is like good skiing snow: airy, fluffy, not too waterlogged. We don’t seem to get snow like it much anymore. But every time we do, the Facebook pages of family members fill with photos of their kids with buckets, collecting a backyard harvest. Recently, on a hot day, my 5-year-old daughter called out: “Daddy, do you remember making snow pudding? It’s like sugar, with some snow. It is soooooo yummy!” It struck me. Another generation looks forward to snow just like we did, not as a source of dread but as something to, literally, eat up. —Dan Simmons november 2018 southwest 65

s soon as I step out of my car, my running shoes sink into soft powder. Ahead, the Bonneville Shoreline Trail wiggles 100 miles along the Wasatch Range, the Rocky Mountains’ western edge, which cradles Logan, Utah, between its jagged cliffs and the bed of the Great Salt Lake. It’s 10 degrees and still dark. Yet I’m joining a few friends for a 7-mile run—our weekend tradition since 2015. I strap spikes on my shoes, flash my headlamp, and fall in line. The frozen air seizes our burning lungs. We’re missing our beds, but within a few short minutes, we start to climb the rocky earth, forced up by the clash of tectonic plates. We pass sagebrush and the bare branches of cottonwood and aspen trees. The blanketed valley sleeps below. In the city, on the plowed streets, my mind can safely drift among life’s worries. On the trails, mental wandering is risky. Every step must be plotted. The thaw comes when the sun climbs to the top of the mountain peaks, and I’m reminded why it’s always worth it. It might be the slices of sunlight cut by a tree’s shadow or the sprinkle of ice particles in the air or the steam rising off our skin. But something illuminating will inevitably catch our eye and hold us for a long pause before our legs begin to move again. —Kase Johnstun november 2018 southwest 67

he pond was a sheet of white, the sky a dome of January’s deepest blue. Waiting for a bite, I hopped from foot to foot above the hole we had carved with a chainsaw. On the shore, an eagle shifted on the limbs of a big pine, equally eager to see what I’d pull up. The eagle and I were both there for survival, but mine was psychological. He wanted a pike; I wanted to participate instead of hibernate. In Maine, the first ice arrives unwelcome in late fall, barely a skim on the pond where I walk my dog. I put my head down and think bleakly of rising fuel prices. But then winter’s ice thickens, until one day the shacks appear on the river, and my head comes up again. I admire the beautiful pluck of mankind, how we make houses so we can crouch over holes in frozen landscapes, looking for life. “It is like fishing up moonbeams through the kitchen floor,” the poet Robert P. Tristram Coffin once wrote of ice fishing. There is exactly that component of magic. You have won the right, through your endurance of this hard winter, to walk on the world of fishes and invite them up into your house. The catch tastes of magic, too, cooked on the improbable fire built on ice. On that day, I ate enough to get full on the hard-won delicacy and then tossed the stillmeaty bones to the eagle, my companion in winter, who snatched them up. —Mary Pols november 2018 southwest 71

“SPARKS OF COMFORT,” CONTINUED FROM PAGE 63

There were hugs and high-fives as everyone arrived, but no announcement. Dennis and I had agreed it was better to keep our news under wraps so early on. Just act normal, I thought as I fumbled through setting up camp. It was a refrain that had been running through my mind for days. Once we had the fire going, we snugged down around it against the growing cold, telling stories, laughing, eating s’mores, passing a flask I pretended to nip from, and laughing some more. Hours went by without any of us noticing. I once read somewhere that engaging the senses is a good way to de-stress, to “live in the moment,” as gurus would say. Though I wasn’t thinking about that then, the campfire seemed to be delivering its own form of meditation. Its warmth settled on my cheeks and pooled in the folds of the blanket wrapped around me. Its cedar-anddamp-earth smell hung above us,

I knew the fire would keep us warm and toast our marshmallows. But I’d no idea it would kindle a peace in me.

like breathable nostalgia. It filled conversational lulls with pops and crackles, quick spans where I’d lose myself completely in watching it lap the night air. In its glow, Dennis’ face flickered in the sepia tones of a classic movie. Now and then, our eyes would lock, and we’d silently acknowledge the whopper of a secret we shared. In the unspoken language of people who know each other inside and out, he’d raise an eyebrow to ask if I was OK. I’d smile to tell him I was, and he’d grin back. Same old Dennis … only not the same. Literally and

figuratively, I was seeing him in a new light. (I couldn’t have known it then, but he’d wear that same goofy grin the following July when he held our son for the first time.) I had expected the fire would keep us warm and toast our marshmallows. But I’d no idea it would kindle a peace in me and melt away the tension I’d been carrying for days. It was another of life’s surprises. I pulled my blanket tighter around my shoulders and decided, at least for one night, to let my worries rise like the smoke and drift away. —Tracy Marsh

was raised in Michigan, where we had only Jacuzzis and gym saunas, the latter of which terrified me with the giant-font health warnings displayed on their doors. The idea of sitting around in a hot room with a bunch of sweaty, sometimes-naked strangers was not an appealing one, even if it was supposed to be good for you. Later in life, I spent time living on a New Zealand commune that came with a small Hobbit-esque sweat lodge. It may have been the ambience, or it may have been the delirious heat; all I can tell you

is that, from that point on, I became the sort of person who enjoys sweating in the company of strangers. Now, I’ve been to bathhouses from California to New York, Paris to Helsinki. Although each one has had its own distinct character reflective of the local culture, all of them have offered me one thing that is difficult, if not impossible, to find outside their walls: the opportunity for renewal against a backdrop of communal vulnerability. And, in doing so, some of those places have changed my life. It’s happened where I least expected it. I didn’t, for example, go into the Russian & Turkish Baths in New York’s East Village expecting to find anything other than conditions that approximated a rush hour subway car with broken air conditioning: The 126-year-old facility is bare-bones, frequently crowded, and low on amenities. You can, however, pay someone to beat you with a broom made of

oak leaves (the idea being that this platza treatment opens the pores and exfoliates the skin). The first time I went down the stairs to the sauna and steam room, I thought I was descending into hell. What I found instead was a group of my fellow New Yorkers, stripped of their clothing and defenses. We sat together, largely in silence, a still

eye in the center of the city’s eternal storm. When I left, I finally had some understanding of how to live in New York. The key, I realized, was to periodically retreat behind a veil of steam so thick that the city couldn’t find you. Sweating out toxins is a myth—the body sweats to cool itself—but I believe that if you sit still long enough, you can

sweat out your stress, and in its place remains the almost superhuman resilience required to resume daily life. Years later, in the wake of the breakup of a long-term relationship, I discovered my first hot spring during a trip to California. I had gone to Big Sur to try to fix my head and on my second night there drove south along the pitch-black Pacific Highway to the Esalen Institute, a nonprofit hot springs retreat that offers special public hours between 1 and 3 a.m. The springs are perched on a cliff above the ocean; to experience them, you sit in a clawfoot tub and fill it with hot, faintly sulfurous water. The first time I did this, I watched the steam rise into the cold sky choked with stars and listened to the waves a few hundred feet below. In that moment, I came closer to finding God, or some version of God, than I ever had before—or have since. The Esalen springs, I told my next boyfriend, were my favorite place in the world. He took me seriously enough that, when we went there several years after my first visit, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. It was 2 a.m. and the stars were out. I said yes. How could I not? As it turned out, there were some good reasons not to, and it was with the memory of Esalen in mind that I decided to flee New York for San Francisco after I broke off my engagement. I wanted to recapture the crazed, transcendent beauty I had found in the springs, the sensation of hot water diluting my troubles until my mind resembled a calm, clear pool. I stayed in San Francisco for four years. Part of what sustained me was the reassuring proximity of Northern California’s many hot springs, though it was the Kabuki Springs & Spa baths in San Francisco’s urban Japantown that I visited most frequently. As I had in New York, I sat among strangers in a state of stoic

F1_bathhouses_NP.indd 79

condensation, occasionally migrating from sauna to steam room to plunge pool. The Kabuki baths were utterly serene; there was a gong you could hit if anyone got too chatty. Where the Russian Baths had telegraphed endurance and Esalen cosmic spirituality, Kabuki radiated wellness, the sense that we were all just one 120-degree steam room away from achieving our better selves. Every one of us had set aside our schedules,

phones, and inhibitions to pursue renewal in a shared space. In doing so, we had allowed ourselves to be open—to extreme temperatures, our physical limitations, and the proximity of other people’s mostly unclothed bodies. If that isn’t a prerequisite for self-betterment, I don’t know what is. Rebecca Flint Marx is a Brooklynbased writer and can be reached at rfmarxworks@gmail.com.

/ DALLAS Light Up the City NOVEMBER 3

Given a concrete and steel canvas, artists paint downtown Dallas by splashing eye-popping video displays onto buildings and filling neighborhood blocks with glittering light installations. Part street festival and part art exhibition, Aurora adds a lot of razzle-dazzle to the urban architecture around us. In its ambitious flights of fancy, Aurora is also a reimagining of the city’s potential, and of the public spaces we too often take for granted. At the very least, for one night, it’s reason to walk around and gawk at a bunch of super cool lights. dallasaurora.com

NOVEMBER 2–4 TUCSON, ARIZONA

Lift Your Spirits Día de los Muertos, the Mexican holiday that resonates on either side of the border, is a chance to honor the dead and celebrate the lives they led. Tucson has its own set of distinct multicultural festivities bringing the living closer to the afterlife, culminating downtown with the All Souls Procession and the burning of an urn filled with items—letters, photos,

flowers—dedicated to the ones we’ve lost. While the procession has come to be associated with the season’s various holidays, it sprang up independently out of the city’s diverse artistic community. That creative spirit still animates the event. allsoulsprocession.org NOVEMBER 2–11 NEW BRAUNFELS, TEXAS

Do Your Wurst

For 10 days every year, Landa Park transforms into Wurstfest,

a full-fledged cultural celebration of this Texas city’s German roots. Brush off your dancing shoes for the waltz contest, sip your way through a variety of Bavarian brews, or swing by the Naegelin’s Bakery stand for some strudel. (Speaking of strudel, don’t forget to come hungry: Along with plenty of the fest’s titular dish, visitors can enjoy the crispy potato pancakes called kartoffelpuffer.) Pintsized festivalgoers can explore Kinderhalle, while thrill-seekers can brave the carnival rides. Not the wurst way to spend a day, eh? wurstfest.com

You may stay for the live music and beer, or for the farm-to-table fare that includes vegetables, fruit, and cheese. But you don’t come to the PA Bacon Fest with a hankering for kale salad. You’re here for the fat strips of bacon, the pork barbecue, the pig roasting on a spit. Per the fest itself, everyone from “Philly food trucks and farmers market vendors to local restaurants” will be going whole hog during the two-day extravaganza. pabaconfest.com NOVEMBER 5–11 NEW YORK CITY

remember to have fun chise in Southern California has been especially rewarding and exciting for Janet Folk. Managing the dog daycare, boarding facility, and spa allows Folk, who opened her Dogtopia in Santa Ana in 2014, to operate a business while enjoying life to the fullest. “Every day when I enter the store, I am happy and excited to see our furry family members, and get to know the pet parents,” says Folk, a dog lover and rescuer who previously ran insurance companies. “After being in the [insurance] business for 37 years, opening a Dogtopia daycare center was such a different path, and one that I was excited to embark on,” she says. “While a more relaxed atmosphere than the office world I was in, it still requires attention and dedication to the brand and staff.” Alex Samios, vice president of franchise development at Dogtopia, the pet industry’s fastest-growing franchise, says franchisees maintain a happy work-life balance while escaping the rut of corporate America. “Plus,” he says, “you get to be with dogs all day.” Working with team members, franchisees can share responsibility and impart some lessons of their own.

owning a dogtopia fran-

“We have a proven model that allows you to be in business for yourself but not by yourself,” Samios says. Dogtopia offers a great opportunity for people who are looking to run their own business, as well as serial entrepreneurs looking to diversify with a new project. “Our simple business model mixed with years of refined processes means we know how to make a daycare center profitable and successful,” Samios says. “Everything we do resounds around our core belief that every dog deserves daycare. That daycare enhances the joy of pet parenthood

and enables dogs to positively change our world.” Both Folk and Samios recommend owners participate in the company’s ongoing training programs. “Leverage your support team and the shared best practices of top operators,” Samios says. To get started with Dogtopia, Folk says it’s smart to open with a strong budget and marketing plan, and with a focused general manager. Franchisees should connect their business to the community and participate in local dog-themed events. “Most importantly, remember to have fun,” Folk says.

business to put food on the table and send your kids to college. “But when you can do that and impact the quality of life for hundreds of people in your community, nothing compares,” says Chad Everts, Modern Acupuncture’s co-founder and chief development officer. Modern Acupuncture, the first franchise concept to provide the 3,000-year-old proven practice of acupuncture in an upscale, retreat-like setting, can help fast-track your way to success. “Franchising provides that accelerated learning that allows a solid business person to avoid many pitfalls and grow the business even faster than on their own,” says L.S. Carper, the company’s regional developer for North and South Carolina and Colorado.

“Having seasoned, successful franchise executives leading the company gave me a lot of confidence, but their genuine passion for investing in franchise owners’ success is the true differentiator,” he says. Franchises are placed in accessible locations to bring affordable health and beauty treatments to the masses. People are embracing wellness and pill-free alternatives to treat chronic ailments, and to enhance mood and sleep. “Our franchisees witness patients coming into their clinics every day with an ailment they have suffered from chronically,” Carper says. “The feeling they have when that patient walks out with drastic improvement is priceless.” Everts says many franchisees are owners of other nationally recognized franchises. “When dozens of sophisticated, successful, and experienced franchisees are

vested in a concept, it validates the viability of the investment for a potential franchisee,” he says. “Follow the success.” Modern Acupuncture is also impacting the multibillion-dollar market for cosmetic procedures with all-natural cosmetic acupuncture, which can have direct health benefits and serves as an alternative to invasive skin treatments. “Modern Acupuncture gave me the opportunity to take all the industry and business skills I had been applying in corporate America for other companies and put them to work for myself as an entrepreneur,” Carper says. “Building a thriving business that can be passed on to our kids or sold to fund retirement gives us a lot of financial security.” Everts says combining passion and purpose fulfills the company mission—“To make your life better”—and rewards everyone involved.

know your strengths when you run your own business, owners of Home Care Assistance franchises say you watch your self-awareness grow. You get to know your strengths and learn how to address your weaknesses. Learning all aspects of the business allows you to see how the pieces fit together, says Lori Wengerd, who owns Home Care Assistance of Columbus, Ohio. Then you can hire people whose skills complement yours, rather than duplicate them. For Beth Brown, owner of Home Care Assistance in Palm Beach, Florida, finding

the right support was a bit of a family affair. Her tech-savvy daughter joined the business after graduating from Georgetown University and now handles billing and payroll. “It was a huge relief,” says Brown, who also enjoys watching her daughter’s business and leadership abilities grow. Home Care Assistance’s corporate support is also there to help you grow and experiment with ways to improve. “You’re never alone trying to achieve any goals for the business,” she says. While the mission of “changing the way the world

ages” sets a lofty goal, Wengerd believes it’s one that can be achieved. Home Care Assistance brings peace of mind to many people. Clients embrace who they are and what they’ve built in their own lives so that they can truly celebrate longevity. When clients’ families know their loved ones are cared for, they can rest easy as well. Wengerd also encourages her staff to attend personal development courses. “We’re not only in business to help older adults and their families, but to be an amazing employer,” Wengerd says.

CONNECTING PASSION AND PURPOSE: THE HCA WAY Franchise Owners LOVE Home Care Assistance, what’s not to love? • Proven franchise business model • One-on-one coaching to support consistent growth • Financial security (In 2017, the average revenue for sites open at least 12 months is $1,260,843.) With unique programs like the Cognitive Therapeutics MethodTM and the Balanced Care MethodTM, it was clear to us that Home Care Assistance was the right fit. Along with the amazing support and resources we have available from the corporate franchise team, we independently own and operate our local office, allowing us to grow our organization in our own, unique way. As a father-son team, we work intimately with families in the community as we provide solutions for their loved ones. Our families have peace of mind knowing that we are looking after the well-being of all of our clients, just like family. be your best self opening a franchise gives

you the opportunity to grow personally while improving your business acumen. “Franchising can bring out leadership skills that weren’t allowed to show themselves while someone was mired in middle management, 9-to-5 corporate America,” says Jack Johnson, who co-founded The Franchise Insiders with his wife, Jill. Their consulting company connects clients to franchise opportunities best suited to them. “Find the right franchise that allows you to be your best self,” Johnson says. “This is your chance to be the boss you always dreamed of, give people the best job they’ve ever had, and finally make the money you deserve.” The Franchise Insiders coached Taysia Randall, director of caring at Senior Helpers of Southern Utah, when she was choosing her business. “The Franchise Insiders introduced me to a business option that I did not know existed, and it ended up being the option we chose,” Randall says. As a result, she’s learned all the ins and outs of starting and building a business. Randall has grown as a leader, businessperson, and communicator, while her employees have had the opportunity to learn new skills of their own. “It also allows for a financial retirement opportunity that I wouldn’t have otherwise,” she says. Change is the No. 1 reason

people seek franchises, Johnson says. “Everyone has a different version of what ‘change’ they need, but ‘change’ is always the main driver.” Clients seek lifestyles that give them the freedom to spend more time with their families. They also look for a more stable work schedule and a better income. “We usually identify our client’s perfect franchise match within 30 days,” Johnson says. Their “Foundational Franchise Method” helps clients

safely invest and diversify with a portfolio of “smart franchises.” Over time, franchisees won’t be as susceptible to market fluctuations and can build a real empire. Franchise ownership can be a legacy, a family asset, and a place for your kids to work. “Business ownership makes hard work fun and almost addictive,” Johnson says. “We have clients that tell us they are now more excited about Monday than they are Saturday because of their business.”

Looking to make a change? Jack and Jill Johnson can help.

business can be a growth experience in itself. “I feel proud to have a business that has proven to be successful,” says Glenda Gonzalez, who owns Kiddie Academy of Aliana, Texas, near Houston, with her husband and two other couples. Gonzalez says she knows her team of administrators and teachers provides the best child care service possible, following Kiddie Academy’s Life Essentials curriculum. The four pillars of Life Essentials are developmentally appropriate curriculum, character education, technology education, and health and fitness. The curriculum empowers children and encourages them to learn at their own pace. At Kiddie Academy, children are educated not just for school, but for life. Both children and their families benefit from the ser-

vices offered by the franchise. “Working families are short on time and long on expectations, so the educational child care industry is growing to meet those needs,” says Kiddie Academy President Greg Helwig. Investing in a child care franchise guarantees a place in a growing industry. Plus, as Gonzalez sees it, you get to do something that will make a profound difference in the lives of children and their families. “There is nothing more fulfilling and rewarding than to see happy faces coming in and going home every day,” she says. jump into opportunity a key to success is honing

your communication skills. “Good communication with customers is paramount,” says Brent Berridge, who recently opened Pool Scouts of Sugar Land, outside Houston. The former Dow Chemical manager with a degree in business administration dove into a Pool Scouts franchise when he saw the company’s highlevel approach to customer service, which helped the brand stand out. “I had only known pools as a pool owner,” Berridge says. “Many of the mom-and-pop pool service businesses don’t place a priority on reliability or customer service.”

He credits Pool Scouts’ experienced staff, training program, and ongoing technical support for launching his business successfully. “Without this support, I would not know 80 percent of what I know today about pools,” Berridge says. With more than 10 million residential pools in the U.S., according to Pool Scouts, the need for quality pool service should be evident. The company likes candidates who are ready, willing, and able to follow a system. Your business will be set up to flourish. build on experience you never stop learning when you run your own business. Ask Tom Decker, who with his father, Tom Decker Sr., owns three SealMaster territories in the Maryland and Virginia area. Because of the different challenges faced by business owners, he says training by SealMaster, one of the world’s leading producers and distributors of pavement maintenance materials and equipment, was important. Every day can bring something unexpected, but SealMaster makes sure its franchisees are well-prepared. And it’s very rewarding. “The SealMaster franchise

opportunity gave us a chance to build a significant asset in our manufacturing facility and earn a very nice living as well,” Decker says. Dave Boone, his wife, Daphne, and their partners, Dave and Sue Musgrove, own the Phoenix-based SealMaster franchise serving all of Arizona. In 2015, they needed a much larger business site and manufacturing plant to meet growing demand. After adding on to the operation during 17 years at their old location, they had run out of room to expand. In order to grow, they purchased a 4-acre site for a new plant, offices, and a transportation and equipment fleet. “Starting with a blank slate, we built everything based on our experience of what worked

taste success you can encounter challenges when opening a franchise, but hard work can have a sweet payoff. “My expectations were that I would casually check in once or twice a week and make enough money to buy a small island,” says Marnie West, who owns Gigi’s Cupcakes stores in Pigeon Forge and Knoxville, Tennessee. West and her husband needed to put in a lot of work to get their franchise up and running. No small island yet, but running the business has come with plenty of rewards. “The struggles in the beginning have made me a better person and store owner,” West says. “If it were easy, everyone would do it.” Besides having a business owner’s perspective, she sees things from the standpoints of her customers and her “amazing” staff. “I used to think I could do everything myself, but I had to learn to share my duties and trust in my workers,” West says, calling them part of her “extended family.” West and her husband also know their two Gigi’s locations

Clinical trials bring us closer to the day when all cancer patients can become survivors. Clinical trials are an essential path to progress and the brightest torch researchers have to light their way to better treatments. That’s because clinical trials allow researchers to test cutting-edge and potentially life-saving treatments while giving participants access to the best options available.

If you’re interested in exploring new treatment options that may also light the path to better treatments for other patients, a clinical trial may be the right option for you. Speak with your doctor and visit StandUpToCancer.org/ClinicalTrials to learn more.

Kids Fly Safe with CARES® Airplane Safety Harness. The only FAA approved harness-type child restraint approved for taxi, takeoff, turbulence, and landing. It’s perfect for toddlers old enough to sit alone, but too small for the seatbelt. Since the child is comfortably secured, they will more likely stay seated and can’t kick the seat in front of them. CARES Airplane Safety Harness is portable, lightweight, and simple to install.

One Question

Chris Harrison, It’s paying attention and listening, which seems so simple but isn’t always done. The similarity between The Bachelor and The Bachelorette and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire is that I’m trying to tell stories for the viewer. Millionaire is a game show, and I have less time—30 minutes—to try to get to the bottom of Why do we care about this person? Why do we want them to win or not win? The toughest part has been all of the reading. There are German, Latin, and French words, geographic locations, Shakespeare—I try to get everything right so that the contestant has all the information and the best possible advantage.

On Nov. 16, Chris hosts Who Wants To Be A Millionaire’s $100 million commemorative show.
