DATE SMARTER Dating can be fun and invigorating – from that instant attraction you feel the first time you meet to jumping in the car for an impromptu weekend getaway. Unfortunately, it can take a lot of work to get to that stage of dating.
F
rom spending hours sorting through online profiles looking for a good match to trying to connect via pokes, winks and email, dating can suddenly feel like a full-time job.
Wouldn’t it be nice if you could just fast forward to the fun part of dating? That’s exactly what newlyweds Desireé and Michael Schlitt say It’s Just Lunch, a dating service for

With so many dating options out there, why did you choose It's Just Lunch?
D: I travel a lot for work, so I’d read about It’s Just Lunch in airline magazines, and then I ran into a friend who was attending the wedding of an attorney in town who’d met her husband through IJL – the fact that those two events happened so close together, I thought I should call them. At the end of my work day I didn’t want to come home and go look at profiles online. I felt like it was a waste of my time. M: I had gotten a divorce and then did online dating for a while before joining IJL. I joined mainly because it’s a lot of work to do the online thing. You have to keep up on it. You never really know who you’re going to meet. IJL was just a lot easier. They found people for me based on what I was looking for and I just had to show up. You don’t have to do much work. What would you tell a friend who was apprehensive about investing the money on IJL?
M: I’d ask, “Are you looking for a relationship or not?” With online dating you never know who’s on the other side of the line. IJL had better quality people who were interesting to me. It truly was an experience that was tailored for me. Describe your first meeting with an IJL matchmaker?
D: She asked me questions about
myself, what I like to do, what I want in a relationship, whether I’d marry someone who already had kids, how important religion is, that kind of thing. It
would take much longer to find out someone else’s answers to those questions through online dating. This was black and white.
Tell us about your first date with one another.
D: I never went on lunch dates because I was always busy at work so I met Michael after work at a downtown restaurant. The conversation just flowed. I was attracted to him from the start. I remember it turned into dinner.

D: I met my husband, so I guess I would say that! It’s Just Lunch – it’s just a lot of fun. I remember I’d get off a plane and have a voicemail from the matchmaker saying she had a potential date for me. She would tell me about the person and was flexible with scheduling.

Gary’s Greeting
A Relentless Pursuit of Reliability more than 700 Boeing 737s fly nearly 4,000 flights across a network of 98 destinations in the United States and seven additional countries (plus more are on the way; we’ve announced our intent to serve Cuba later this year). This year, we’re on track to hit our ontime performance target, and we continue to receive outstanding recognition for our world-class Customer Service. Our baggage-handling numbers are also some of the best we have ever seen, and I know you appreciate that we’re still the only airline who does
not charge for your first or second checked bag! I’m immensely proud of our record of Reliability over our 45-year history. Out of all major U.S. carriers that have been reporting statistics to the Department of Transportation since it began tracking customer satisfaction numbers in 1987, we have consistently received the lowest ratio of complaints per passengers boarded. So how do we do it? I credit the 50,000-plus Southwest Employees who have a Vision to become the world’s most-loved, most-flown, and mostprofitable airline. One of the traits we ask of our People is to have what we call a Warrior Spirit. It’s that Warrior Spirit that drives our constant pursuit of improvement. Our People think and act like owners: They find creative solutions to challenging issues, are efficiency experts, and keep our costs low so we can pass on the savings to you in the form of low fares. We’re fully aware that Reliability is a journey, not a destination. We aren’t perfect, and when we fail to meet your expectations, we find ways to improve and win you back. For us, it’s a passionate pursuit that fuels our quest for constant improvement. You deserve that from your favorite airline, and it’s our pleasure to deliver!
Gary Kelly Chairman, President, and CEO Southwest Airlines
PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEPHEN KELLER
At Southwest Airlines, our pursuit of excellence is relentless when it comes to Reliability. Our Customers expect that from us, and we demand it from ourselves. When I think about Reliability, my first thought is Safety, which is—and always has been—our top priority. There is no greater responsibility for us than to deliver you safely to your destination, ontime, with your bag, and with a smile. There are many factors that go into operating a safe, reliable airline. As we’ve grown and expanded, so too has the complexity of our operation. Every day,

When Passengers meet Flight Attendant Midell Marsh, they’re treated like family from the start. Known for her smile and ability to put others at ease, Midell helps Passengers feel at home in the skies. Southwest Makes Fur Fly
Traveling with pets is a cinch thanks to SWA’s policies. As the holiday season approaches and you begin to make travel plans, don’t worry about leaving your furry family members at home. Southwest Airlines invites your MVPs—that’s Most Valuable Pets, of course—onboard for your next trip. Thanks to our pet-friendly products and policies, flying with Fido and Fluffy is simple and stress-free. Southwest’s pet fare ($95) allows small, vaccinated dogs and cats to travel in-cabin, under the seat in front of their owners. Your pets can cozy up in their carriers (remember to check size
requirements) and count on an inflight experience that’s just as comfortable as the one our human Customers enjoy. We even have a Southwest carrier available for purchase (Southwestthestore.com; $58) so your furry friends can hit the skies in style! Because pets travel on a first-come, first-serve basis, don’t forget to call Southwest to reserve a spot before your trip. On the day of travel, bring your canine or feline to the airport in an approved carrier and check in at the ticket counter. Our Employees will be expecting you—and your pawed pal. Check out advice from one of our frequent fliers and her French bulldog on page 18, and visit Southwest.com/pets for more information. —Lynn Bruns, Product Marketing

We started UNTUCKit because we had trouble finding shirts that looked good untucked. It’s a deceptively difficult look to get right. Shirts just aren’t designed that way. So we decided to make a better shirt for the untucked man. A casual shirt fit for comfort, not convention, and designed to fall at the perfect length.

SLICE OF LIFE
Josh Cowan, owner of Dizzy Cow Pizzeria, has watched Pratt & Light Plaza flourish.
A Piece of the Pie
Baltimore’s Pratt & Light Plaza is on the rise. When I moved to Baltimore a few years ago, I saw it as a chance to shake up my career. I was a chef out West, but I wanted to do something on my own. I stuck with cooking, but instead of working in someone else’s kitchen, I now make gourmet pizza from a mobile wood-fired pizza oven. My business is called Dizzy Cow Pizzeria, and I travel all over the Baltimore area, cooking at markets, festivals, and private events. One of Dizzy Cow Pizzeria’s first regular locations was the weekly farmers market at Pratt & Light Plaza in downtown Baltimore. When I started cooking at the plaza, there wasn’t much going on except the market. I got a great response from my pizza customers, and the other vendors in the market were doing well too, but it just seemed like the plaza could be so much more than it was. Over the past two years, the plaza has changed into something really special. With help from a Southwest Airlines Heart of the Community grant, the Downtown Partnership of Baltimore has added
more weekly events and put in new landscaping and seating. There’s even a kiosk and deck made from a shipping container. The crowds at the farmers market have grown, and the plaza is full of people who come to hang out. By bringing new improvements, partners, and activities together, the team is making Pratt & Light Plaza a place Baltimore can be proud of, a place where I know my regulars by name and am a part of something bigger than just a market. That’s what I wanted when I started Dizzy Cow, and that’s why the Pratt & Light Plaza is so important to my business and to me. It’s not just a location—it’s a place. For more information about Dizzy Cow and how the Heart of the Community program helped Pratt & Light Plaza, visit GoDowntownBaltimore.com. —Josh Cowan, Owner, Dizzy Cow Pizzeria In 2014, Southwest launched the Heart of the Community program, which awards grants to create public spaces in the hearts of communities served by the airline. To date, the program has supported 18 innovative and transformative projects. To learn more, visit pps. org/Heart-of-the-Community.

I was flying for the first time with my daughter to visit family, and while in the Denver airport, she was playing with her most precious friend, Froggy. In the midst of her excitement to see her aunt, my daughter accidentally left Froggy behind as we exited the airport. None of us realized he was gone until we were halfway to our destination. As a mother, I was immediately overwhelmed with sadness; Froggy had been my daughter’s best friend
THE FACE OF GR ATITUDE
The night before I was scheduled to get home from a business trip to California, my wife called to say my son had broken his femur and needed surgery the next morning. I got to the gate at Burbank the next morning and checked with customer service agent Gloria Cosio to ensure the flight had WiFi so I could stay in contact with my wife. We chatted a bit, and when I told her what was happening, she said that she would pray. I really appreciated that. As we lined up to board, I was called to the front of the line. Operations agent Erik Morante said

Dear Southwest,
for all of her 5 years. I placed calls and completed a missing item report, but feared he would be gone for good. The next morning, I received a call from customer service agent Stacey Smith. She had watched my daughter playing with Froggy, noticed he had been left behind, and held onto him. When we arrived at the airport to head home, she not only had her co-workers retrieve Froggy, but also had a teddy bear accompany him with a letter telling my daughter about the exciting journeys he had been on at the airport. I was blown away by Stacey’s kindness and generosity, and I’m so appreciative to the Southwest staff. For this, I will always fly Southwest and remember what a great team you guys have. —Lauren Sowers

that Gloria had told him what was going on. They wanted to let me pre-board so I could get a good seat and deplane sooner. On board, the kindness continued. Flight attendant Shae Van Donk offered me a free beverage and was very kind. I made it to Portland in time to get to the hospital as my son was getting out of surgery. Thanks for making a difficult situation a little easier. I’ve always loved your airline, and this just reinforces that. —Thomas Slawson COMFORTING CONNECTION
As I was boarding a recent flight, I got a call from my sister asking if I wanted to connect via FaceTime with my seriously ill father. Since the only way I can use that technology is on an old iPod, I stepped out of line and moved back into the terminal to use the free airport WiFi. Customer service supervisor Carmen Ortiz asked what was going on, and when she understood the situation—that I might be saying a final farewell to my dad—she used her own iPhone to let me say “I love you” to my dad. She then checked my bag
and helped me advance to the door of the plane. The spirit of love that you promote with the heart logo was made real by Carmen dropping her other duties to help me at that moment. —Judith H. TREASURED TAG
My 10-year-old granddaughter, Ryan, recently flew Southwest to and from Florida with her parents and paternal grandparents. On her return flight, her souvenir Disney luggage tag, which she’s had since her first visit to Disneyland in 2008, came off her carryon bag. She did not notice it was missing. A few days after Ryan’s return, my husband and I received a package addressed to Ryan. (Ryan’s luggage tag had our address on it.) Inside was Ryan’s Disney tag. She was surprised the tag had come off her bag, shocked it had been returned to her, and thrilled to have it back. First officer Tom Markland discovered the tag while conducting the preflight inspection of the aircraft and mailed it to Ryan. My granddaughter and I have written thank-you notes with promises
to pay it forward, and as Ryan’s maternal grandmother, I appreciate the lesson he taught my granddaughter. —Suzanne Coffin FARE CARE
Recently, my grandmother passed. I live on the West Coast, and my family is in the Washington, D.C. area. I was trying to find a reasonable last-minute flight home, and when I couldn’t, I was scared I wouldn’t be able to go home and support my own mother or make the funeral. Although Southwest doesn’t offer a bereavement fare, customer service agent Tracy Silas offered me her personal coupon code. With some additional family help, I could afford to fly home and help my mom with the most difficult of tasks: burying her mom. As a new mom myself, I understand the importance of that type of support—just having someone to help with hard tasks you don’t have the energy to complete. I thank Tracy for her selflessness and compassion. It has meant the world to me, and I am forever a Southwest customer. —Kathryn Bowman

WON’T NEED THIS
Adults-only campus tourism gives school vacation new meaning.
Dear Reader, expression, “Youth is wasted on the young”? College may not be wasted on students, but it’s unfair to let kids have it to themselves. Campuses make superb all-inclusive resorts. In fact, I have spent many happy vacation days attending sports and concerts, wandering around museums, biking and walking outdoors, and hanging out in beautiful spots—all at dozens of institutions I never attended, from state universities to small colleges to all “ancient eight” Ivy League schools. In that spirit, we did our homework to create the guide on page 60 to the best campus experiences in America. Not because your kid should go there, but because you should.

When my son George applied to colleges, he asked me to visit a few with him in Maine. George was already planning to apply early decision to Middlebury College in Vermont, but he wanted to check out some other options. Instead, I offered him $100, which is how much the motels in Maine would have cost. “We’ll visit any college you get into,” I said. He took the $100. We toured colleges in front of the computer, browsing their websites. Why did I bribe my son not to tour? Because I hate campuses? Far from it. I have loved college ever since I stopped attending one. Campuses are Edens, with beautiful landscaping, the finest gyms, world-class sports and entertainment, a whole town full of smart people—even gourmet food these days. Which is exactly why I didn’t want George to visit those places. I wanted him to fall in love with a college’s course guide, not the tour guide. I wanted him to yearn for the classroom before he saw the stadium. Actually—full confession? I wanted to visit those campuses when none of us was applying to them. You know the

Dear Editor,
My husband and I were flying from Portland back to California when I read your story “Help Wanted: Bedraggled Parents of Toddler Seek Solace on Private Island” [August 2016]. My sister has two kids (ages 1 and 3), so I laughed out loud a couple of times when you were describing life with a toddler. My husband and I have been married for four years, and we are now trying to start a family. As stressful and exhausting as it is to be parents, we are looking forward to it. I teared up at the part where you wrote about how much you missed your daughter while you were on your getaway. That made me smile and look forward to the next chapter of our marriage. I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed your story and what a captivating writer you are. Amy Chau IRVINE, CALIFORNIA

VISITING THE FUTURE
While flying in June, I read “The Future the Way It Used to Be” multiple times. In fact, I took the magazine with me and it is on my desk as I type this email. My interest is partly due to the fact that I am leading an effort to design a new education center here at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. I am working to ensure what we do will be authentic science, place an emphasis on communication and collaboration skills, and be engaging and fun. We are looking at how we can bring space education into the
future in order to be truly inspiring. Thanks for a great article. I also enjoyed the image of Southwest landing on the moon. I intend to save my Rapid Rewards points for just such a flight.

I read “Still Got It,” the anniversary issue [June 2016], on a flight from Sacramento to Nashville, a trip I’ve taken many times as an aspiring singer-songwriter. Reading about C.J. Bostic and Sandra Force, as well as the things Southwest did to stand apart, gave me so much hope that it brought tears to my eyes. As I looked out the window, I suddenly became even more emotional. While reading the history of the airline, I was reminded that, as a passenger, I am a part of the present legacy of Southwest Airlines. I only hope to look back 45 years from now and be as proud as I’m sure you are.

What a privilege it must’ve been to know him. Thank you.

This didn’t come straight from the horse’s mouth, but after carefully examining hours of video, researchers at the University of Sussex found that equines are nearly as animated as we are. (Humans, by comparison, can make 27 discrete movements, and chimpanzees 13.) While horses’ mobile ears set them apart from people, study co-author Jen Wathan says the two groups still exhibited similar movements near the eyes and mouth. The findings also suggest that, like us, horses use their varied visages to communicate with friends and foals. Looks like there aren’t any one-trick ponies here.
CREATURE FEATURES Horses aren’t the only animals in touch with their emotions. Cats have 21 distinct facial movements, and dogs have 16.

If you find yourself at the corner of West 20th and Main streets in Kansas City’s Crossroads neighborhood, you’re in the wrong place. But you’re close. Find the alley behind the old Rieger Hotel, buzz the call button, and feel your way down the darkened staircase into the candlelit Manifesto. In the mood for a Manhattan? Bartender Ryan Magnuson will steer you instead to the Xocolatl. “It’s taking a classic cocktail and revamping it into something more interesting,” he says. In this case, that means attempting to replicate the spicy, smoky flavor of a Mexican mole—a sauce often used with stewed chicken. Coffeeinfused vermouth combines with crema de mezcal (which brings both sweetness and smoke) and a kick of Ancho Reyes chile liqueur. You’ll never reach for a regular Manhattan again.
Xocolatl means “bitter water” in Nahuatl.

Northern Thai Cuisine
When chef PJ Stoops landed in Chiang Mai, Thailand, in 2003, he walked out of the airport and into a bowl of kuay tiao nam tok: noodles with blood. He spent the next three years cooking and eating throughout Northern Thailand, studying the region’s distinct tastes and emphasis on sour, herbal flavors over numbing spice. Along the way, he met his wife, Apple. Flash forward 13 years: PJ and Apple now co-helm Foreign Correspondents in Houston, and true to PJ’s first meal, the menu eschews the Thai dishes most familiar to American palates. No drunken noodles. No pad Thai. They’re replaced by minced meat and herb laap salads and khao soi (a curried broth with egg noodles). “There is certainly more to what the almost 70 million people who live in the country called Thailand eat every day,” Stoops says.
Chef Andy Ricker opened Pok Pok back in 2005, and everyone’s been playing catch-up since. Try the duck laap.

OUT TAKES TAKE TEN In a fast-paced world, where most of us are on digital overload, it’s important to find a place of calm in the mind. Ten minutes of guided meditation every day can have a huge impact, reducing feelings of stress and anxiety, improving sleep, and enhancing productivity at work.
Meditate on this: an app that offers a respite from the digital buzz. It wasn’t until I was at university that meditation really clicked. At the time, I was dating a girl who read a lot of Buddhism books. It must have sunk in, because one day I decided to go away and become a monk. I wanted to better understand how to stop the endless chatter inside my mind. The idea for Headspace—where I lead users through breathing exercises and visualizations—came from my desire to demystify meditation and share the knowledge I’d built up during my decade in a monastery. Fortunately, I met my business partner Rich Pierson. He taught me how to make the techniques accessible to the public. It wasn’t my intention to become the voice of the app—we were simply trying to replicate the experience of being taught in person. It’s a similar experience: Whether I’m in the room or on your phone, you still have to sit with your eyes closed. For us, it’s a mission to help create a healthier, happier world.
PERSONAL GOALS Only when we embrace forgiveness, acknowledge our shared human experience, and practice kindness will we discover true peace of mind and happiness in our lives.

Here’s how CEO Tom Harari describes the valet laundry service: My co-founder Itay Forer and I realized how difficult laundry and dry cleaning can be in New York City, so we wanted to connect people to wholesale cleaners with an elegant, efficient delivery service in between. With Cleanly, you download the app and tell us whether you have dry cleaning (per item) or wash-and-fold laundry ($1.50 per pound). On your first order, you receive a Cleanly laundry bag, a bag for hang-dry items, and a garment bag for dry cleaning. You choose one-hour windows for pickup and drop-off, which can be a hotel if you’re traveling. After our valets bring your items to Cleanly’s fulfillment center, our wholesale partners do the cleaning and return your order to the center for the valets. Swimming Upstream
When my daughter was born, I knew I had to learn to swim, both for her and myself. / BY LESLIE CONTRERAS SCHWARTZ
M
y father put me on his back, held onto my legs, and plunged underwater in the neighborhood swimming pool. There was the flash of the June sun becoming brighter and then disappearing into a dark haze. I was five years old, had never put my head under the water, and didn’t know how to let out air like a swimmer. I struggled under the water. I tried to pull my legs and arms from his grip. Instinctively, my father held me tighter. He continued diving, again and again, not realizing I hadn’t held my breath. Under the surface was the muffle of my muted scream, the hush of the blue chlorinated world. I remember the sound of teenagers splashing and yelling as they tried to hold one another’s ILLUSTRATION BY RYAN INZANA

heads under the water. Then we surfaced again, and on top of the noise was my own sharp inhale of air and the pumping of my heart in my ears. When my dad carried me out of the pool, he was confused by my violent coughing. So many of the children in our neighborhood had learned to swim from friends or by being thrown in the water, when an instinct that I couldn’t understand kicked in. My father learned at the YMCA in the 1950s with his siblings. I never took swim lessons as a child. There was just enough money, barely, to send my two older siblings to a couple of lessons in the summer. I felt content in my comfortable, dry spot on a bench or at the edge of the pool as I watched my brother and sister jump into the october 2016 southwest 51

water as if it were the most natural thing for a person to do. I spent my childhood and early adulthood carefully managing to keep my head above water, my hair always dry as I stayed in the shallow end. I envied the freedom of the young people around me who could jump headlong into the deep end, their bodies welcoming the cold shock of water as it took them into a quieted space. The second I felt myself close to being swallowed by water—the depths of a pool or the dark blue sea gaping below me—a terrible panic rose through my body. To this day the sea is a personal symbol of ominousness, a large mouth trying to swallow the world. At 24, on my honeymoon to the Yucatan, I went snorkeling with my husband in the Caribbean Sea, with a guide who took us in a small motor-powered boat. I felt the need to be daring, to leave behind childish fears that surely I could control by now. Once in the water, my body began to sink inside the puffy shape
There was nothing magical my teacher whispered in my ear. I just kept going back to the water. of my bright orange life vest. The waves, which had looked gentle before, were forceful and choppy. I watched my husband swim away from me. I began beating the water back with my arms and legs. Still, every time a wave reached me, I swallowed gulps of salt water. I had forgotten about my snorkeling gear. It was a nuisance on my head as I panicked. The guide looked back and saw me. He swam to me, lithe and liquid like a dolphin, and carried me back to the boat. SIX YEARS LATER, we had our first child, a daughter. There was something terrifying in how she depended on me, especially during the night, when I was afraid I would
sleep so deeply she would surely go hungry. Who said I was capable of this? I had always been resourceful. I learned what I didn’t know how to do. I studied her care as if it were a graduate course. I consulted her doctor at every cough and sneeze. I ignored the advice of my mother, because, in the end, it was only in my control—and my husband’s—to make sure she thrived. When she turned 1, I decided it was time for me to learn how to swim. She’d started walking, and the world was so much larger than her, like it might hurt her at any minute. When we took her to the pool in a baby-sized swimsuit trimmed with ruffles, she seemed to enjoy it, splashing and kicking her feet. But if we held her too close to

going under water, her eyes grew big and terrified. She must learn to swim, I thought. And because she did, I had to as well. I couldn’t stand the fear in her eyes, that she couldn’t do something that could be learned. In my first swim lesson at the Jewish Community Center near our house, my teacher was gentle and without judgment. The first exercise was to simply put my face in the water. I did this repeatedly for an hour. My heart seized in my chest, and then relaxed, along with the practice. I’m going to drown, I wanted to tell her. So many times I thought, I’ll just do it one more time. “You are buoyant. Your body is full of air. It can’t drown if you don’t let it,” she told me. “But you have to relax.” She was holding me under my arms as I floated on my back. It was a struggle to allow my head to relax in the water. I was breathing quickly as I willed my legs not to thrash, my arms not to push against her. I thought of how I held my daughter in her own swim lessons, how I tried to show her what her body could do. It was not with words that I learned how to swim over the course of several months. There was nothing magical my teacher whispered in my ear, nothing that incited in me a sense of power and control. I just kept going back to the water. Every time was still a struggle, but what I struggled against each time was different. First, it was the fear of water on my face, the discomfort of it. Then it was the panic of being underwater, that I would forget how to blow out air and instead suck in water. Later, it was that my arms would grow tired and weak and I would be stranded in the deep end. Yet, I kept going back. I broke my wrist and practiced with a waterproof cast. I began going more frequently, several times a week. The fear wasn’t welcome,

but it became familiar, part of the process of my body’s reaction to swimming. I used it. At night, I read the memoir of American long-distance swimmer Lynne Cox, whose book, Swimming to Antarctica, tells the story of how she faced subfreezing temperatures in a daring swim. She, too, was often filled with fear. And yet she broke records, even at an early age, and continued to swim in challenging conditions. She even welcomed the disorienting atmosphere of swimming at night, making it part of her practice. On my last lesson that summer, I stood at the edge of the pool near the deep end. I looked down at my teacher, who was wearing what she always wore at our lessons: a black T-shirt, swim shorts, a black cap, and beat-up tennis shoes to protect her feet from being scratched up as she walked back and forth across the pool floor. She looked at me and said, “Bend low.” I jumped. The sun was brighter that day, hotter, but I didn’t feel it. Instead, I felt my body in the air, its weight carrying me down. I sank into the water, my teacher a black blur as I looked at her through my goggles. I felt like I had won something, a gift I gave to myself. Afterward, I swam the whole length of the Olympic-sized pool. I struggled and spat out water; my arms and legs were not graceful like the videos I’d watched of professional swimmers. But then I did it again. And again. It was as if I was reaching for something instead of escaping. Initially, I had started learning to swim for my daughter, to protect her. In the end, I did something better, for her and myself. I borrowed fear and let it guide my body, let myself struggle without giving up. the genius inside us all.
A
T THE BACK of a Virginia Beach music store, in a stuffy closetsized studio, 49-year-old Derek Amato sweats over the keys of an upright piano. This happens sometimes. Derek is staying with his girlfriend, Hazel, about an hour from his home in Fort Monroe, Virginia, and his professional-grade Korg TR keyboard. Hazel keeps a tiny Yamaha keyboard at her house for emergencies, but sometimes the urge Derek feels to get the music out of his head and into the world is so great that only the power and range of a full-sized 88-key instrument will suffice. Hazel took to the web and found Newton Piano, a local strip-mall shop that sells Baldwins and Steinways and rents out these sound-stifling stalls for $7 an hour, typically to neighborhood instructors and their pupils. The walls are covered with crayon drawings and construction-paper hearts from young students ((Dear Mrs. Debi, Thank you for teaching me to play piano). Two metronomes sit silent, one on the piano shelf, the other on the lid beside a closed instruction book. There is no sheet music on the rack. Derek never learned to read music, anyway. In fact, he’s never had a single lesson. He barely ever touched a key until 10 years ago, at the age of 39. “I know where C is,” he says, pointing to where every novice is taught to start. “But only because someone showed me.” He holds his fingers over the keyboard, closes his eyes, and breathes through his nose before launching into a cloudburst of notes, trills of treble trickling from his right hand upon the thunderous bass chords of his left. His thick workingman’s hands glide up and down the register, coaxing a sinister beauty from the ivories in a dark overture that spills from his memory. Derek’s eyes are now open, but he’s looking inward, at the black-and-white notes that ceaselessly scroll across his consciousness. Suddenly, he shifts from classical to an ’80s-style power ballad, then to New Age, then to jazz. Some of it he recognizes from previous sessions, some of it is brand new to him, but all of it is original—and virtuosic. Derek doesn’t know where this music comes from; he can’t articulate how he knows what keys to press and in what order. But he can tell you precisely when he acquired his prowess. On October 27, 2006, Derek was at a pool party when a dive
into the shallow end resulted in a major concussion. Five days later, he sat down at a friend’s electric keyboard and instantly, intuitively, knew how to improvise complex pieces of music. “My hands took off like fire,” says Derek. “It was like I’d been playing my entire life.”
MUSIC WAS NEVER a complete stranger to Derek. His maternal grandmother and great aunt both played organ, and his mother, Shelley Amato, memorized church songs by ear when she was a girl. As an adult, Shelley inherited her mother’s upright electric organ, which stood against the wall of the living room in the Sioux Falls, South Dakota, house where Derek and his younger brother grew up. Shelley would often play for the boys when they were toddlers. But over the years, the instrument gathered dust. Shelley, a single mom after getting divorced when Derek was 3, carried as many as three jobs to support her sons, neither of whom took an interest in the old instrument.

Documented cases of sudden savant syndrome, in which prodigious talents emerge following a brain injury. Shelley says that her eldest was too rambunctious to sit on a bench and peck through arpeggios and “Blue Moon.” Instead, while Mom was pulling secretarial and retail shifts at all hours, Derek kept himself busy with baseball, basketball, football, wrestling—even boxing and kung fu. “He was definitely an overachiever,” says Shelley. “Because of the divorce, he wanted to prove he could do anything he put his mind to.” Derek was also a bit of a daredevil, jumping off bridges and performing other stunts to impress friends. Bumps on the head, he says, were not uncommon. At the time—the late 1970s and ’80s—doctors weren’t as concerned about brain injuries. The word “concussion” wasn’t as widely used and didn’t carry the foreboding connotation it does today. Still, Derek never totally shook the music bug. In seventh grade, he tried out for the school band as a percussionist, but couldn’t grasp sheet music. “Besides,” he says, “I didn’t want to be a percussionist—I wanted to be a drummer.” He started a
rock band called Sultans Sabre. Unable to afford a drum set, he stole some bongos from the school, only to return them out of guilt the next day. His mom took him to a local pawn shop and dropped $25 for a cheap acoustic guitar, which he promptly abandoned when the strings proved too hard to press. The desire to impress girls brought him back to the six-string in high school, and he and his best friend Rick Sturm’s new band, Rapid Fire, learned enough chords to get through AC/DC for basement rehearsals and keg parties. “We were just screwing around,” says Rick. “He was actually a really good drummer for his age, but he always envied the front man. He played guitar, but he dabbled, just like we all did.” Any dreams of rock stardom died when Derek dropped out of school at 17 to marry the girl he’d been chasing and move to California. From there, life happened. He worked for a pressure-washing company in Ontario, California, and then moved back to South Dakota and started his own. Later, he and his wife relocated just outside of Denver, where they had three kids, and Derek went through a string of jobs, from selling Toyotas to heading up public relations for a nonprofit to teaching karate and coaching CONTINUED ON PAGE 68 october 2016 southwest 59

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 59 baseball. He eventually got divorced, and he searched for an occupation that would both hold his interest and pay for child support. For four dark months in 2002, he lived in his ex-wife’s parents’ Subaru, until he found his footing with the U.S. Postal Service and became a mail carrier in Greely, Colorado. He had just left a job with a mobile communications service in October 2006 when he decided to visit his mother back in Sioux Falls. While there, Derek’s old friend Rick invited him to a party at an indoor pool. After a few hours and a beer or two, Derek began doing backflips off the edge. The other guys started throwing around a football, and Derek moved down to the shallow end, shouting for someone to hurl the ball over the water so he could make a leaping catch. Derek remembers diving after the ball. He remembers his face slapping the water, then a loud sound and a

tremendous pressure in his skull as his head smashed into the concrete 3 feet below. “I don’t remember a whole lot from here on,” he says. “I think I remember thinking that I was dead.”
DEREK’S FRIENDS would later tell him that not only was he not dead, he didn’t even lose consciousness. According to them, Derek shot up like a bobber, reached for his ears, and crumpled back beneath the water before springing up again. He made his way to the edge of the pool where he finally fell into his friends’ arms. There was no blood. Derek insisted he was fine. “He just wasn’t himself,” says Rick. “He usually talks a lot. But he started to get quiet. He had to sit down, and he wouldn’t get up.” When Derek refused to be taken to the hospital, the guys took him to his mother’s house instead. She says he just lingered in the doorway and didn’t say anything when she asked him what

had happened. “The minute he walked in, I knew something was wrong,” she says. “I told him, ‘We’re going to the hospital.’” A CT scan showed that Derek had suffered a severe concussion. The left side of his head was swollen and bruised. There was no sign of internal bleeding. Doctors kept him overnight for observation. He was released the next morning to his mother’s house, where he slept for the better part of five days. Feeling much better despite a nagging headache, Derek was ready to drive back to Colorado. But first, Rick convinced him to come back to his studio apartment and say goodbye. There, after about 30 minutes of going over the poolside incident, Derek noticed a small Casio keyboard across the room. His fingers started to twitch. “As we were talking, I kept looking over at the keyboard,” says Derek. “I was just drawn to it.” Since the incident, Derek had been seeing what looked like

black-and-white squares scrolling from left to right across his mind. He had thought it was just fogginess that would go away. But as he approached the Casio, it was as if his body was intuitively reading those squares as notes or groups of notes, like the metal drum and comb on an old music box. His once-trembling fingers flew fluidly across the keys, releasing an unstructured and raw yet melodic piece of classical music that no one had ever heard before. “I just sat in the chair and watched him and I teared up,” says Rick. “I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I was just blown away. I finally said, ‘Derek, what is going on?’” “I don’t know how I was doing it,” Derek says now. “All I can tell you is that it was so profound. And I was excited.” He played for six hours. On the drive back to his mother’s house, all he could think about was how he was going to tell her about his newfound ability—and not make her think he’d left his sanity at the bottom of the pool. He decided rather than try to explain, he would show her. The following day, Derek asked his mother to come with him to a local music store. She was tired from work and didn’t really feel like going, but he insisted. Derek stepped up to a large Yamaha digital piano and asked the clerk if he could turn it on for him. Then Derek sat down behind the keyboard while his mother looked on, impatiently. “My first thought was, Please, still be here. Please, still be here,” he says. It was. “He played this classical music that was unbelievable,” says Shelley. “At first I thought that it was a player piano. Tears were running down my face. It was unbelievable. My thoughts were that this was a gift from God.”
ear. He started getting intense, debilitating headaches, as many as seven a day. He was also extremely sensitive to light, especially fluorescents. He once had to be practically carried out of a Wal-Mart. In other instances, he passed out completely. Perhaps worst of all, he couldn’t control the music. His mind was flooded with incessant squares and tunes and rhythms. His hands and fingers were constantly tapping out beats, even in
his sleep. He bought a $400 keyboard and locked himself away for days, letting the music drain from his body like a release valve. Playing was the only thing that seemed to bring him peace. And yet, as clamorous and cramped as his mind became, as frustrated and exhausted and crazy as it sometimes made him, he says he never once wished for the music to stop. Staunch in his spirituality, Derek shared his

mother’s view that all this pain was the price he had to pay for this wondrous gift. For a time, he was actually terrified of losing it— afraid that a fall or a bump on the head or a night of heavy drinking might scare off the muse. Or that it might just disappear as inexplicably as it had arrived. That’s why, at least at first, he didn’t seek medical help or an explanation. He didn’t want to know why this had happened or exactly how it worked, as
F1 SuddenSavant_DWR.indd 70
if solving the mystery would also dispel the magic. There was also the nagging fear that the root of this new ability was something malevolent, a disease or a tumor strangling or eating away at his brain as it slowly killed him. Eventually Derek’s curiosity prevailed. Searching the internet, he found articles about people like Orlando Serrell, who was hit in the head with a baseball when he was 10 years old, knocked unconscious,
and came to with the unexpected ability to solve complex mathematical equations and an instant recall of events and weather of each day since the accident. There was Alonzo Clemons, who found he could create detailed animal sculptures after a fall at age 3 that triggered a developmental disability. An elderly dementia patient who discovered a talent as a painter. A surgeon struck by lightning and a new talent for classical piano. They were all referred to as sudden, or acquired, savants. Was I a savant? Derek remembers thinking. Sounds like a French pastry. Derek also discovered Dr. Darold Treffert, a psychiatrist and retired professor from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine, who consulted on the movie Rain Man and has been studying savant syndrome for more than 50 years. After months of correspondence, phone interviews, and a few noninvasive tests, the professor confirmed that Derek was one of only 70 known sudden savants in the world. The science behind sudden savant syndrome was, and still is, sketchy at best. Treffert’s theory is that when the brain—usually the left hemisphere, in charge of logic and analysis—is damaged, whether it be a blow to the head, a stroke, or dementia, undamaged tissue is recruited from the right hemisphere as a way to compensate. As a result, the right side, where creativity dwells, is released from what Treffert refers to as “the tyranny of the left hemisphere.” In other words, the injured left brain lowers its guard and inhibition, freeing previously untapped creative potential within the right side— potential that, Treffert believes, has been there since birth. “We inherit not just how tall we are or our eye color—we inherit knowledge,” says Treffert. “People believe that when you’re born, you have a wonderful thing called a brain that’s a blank disc. I’m saying the brain comes loaded with all kinds of software, much of which we don’t have
09/07/16 3:13 PM
access to.” In Derek’s case, for instance, his mother, grandmother, and great aunts all played piano or organ and therefore would have passed this genetic knowledge onto him, even if he couldn’t access it before his injury. Berit Brogaard, a neuroscientist at the University of Miami and the University of Oslo, has a different theory. She posits that when the brain is damaged, neurons die, and when they disintegrate, the injured part of the brain is inundated with neurotransmitters. During this time, about a month after the accident, the brain is essentially rewiring itself. “These new connections can now support new skills,” she says, “and give rise to extraordinary talent.” So, is there hidden knowledge or talent inside everyone’s brain, just waiting to be unleashed? Both Treffert and Brogaard agree: “Yes.”
OF COURSE, if we all have this dormant gift stored deep inside
our gray matter, the next step is finding a way to unlock it without slamming our heads into concrete. Treffert hypothesizes that even congenital savants, those born with their exceptional skills, were injured in the womb, releasing their genetic knowledge in utero. Treffert says one possible answer might be electrical. Placing electrodes on certain spots around the head has already been shown to revive long-lost memories. Another option might be pharmacological, but amphetamines and psychedelics are rife with side effects. Perhaps meditation holds the solution—yoga has been proven to affect brain activity. Treffert says that because we spend most of our time living on the left side of our brains, it might be useful to “rummage” around in the right. “If I drive to Chicago, I take the freeway and know the exits by heart,” he says. “But if I have more time, I’ll take an alternate route through a prettier area, and it’s a different kind of trip.
Perhaps we should spend more time pursuing hobbies that seem frivolous, like art or philosophy.” Though the chances of finding a skeleton key that unlocks latent abilities seem about even with those of getting struck by lightning, Derek is far from giving up hope. Treffert says that because so many savants also tend to be on the autism spectrum, they aren’t able to articulate details of their condition to doctors. Derek seems to be the exception—which makes him invaluable not only to researchers, but also to a public that is confounded by the phenomenon. “I think he’s a good ambassador for the condition,” says Treffert. “His story is an excellent example, but he can also talk about it.” Derek has taken advantage of every opportunity to do just that. He’s performed on The Today Show, The Steve Harvey Show, The Discovery Channel, and NPR, and appeared in newspapers across the globe. He’s toured the country as

a solo act, an accompanist, and a special guest of orchestras. He’s recorded albums worth of material, songs dipped from the ever-flowing spring in his brain. Although part of him wants desperately to be known purely on his merit as an artist, the marketing-savvy former businessman knows his backstory is his ticket to fame. The notoriety has also opened Derek up to the vitriol of people who don’t quite understand his gift. He receives hate emails and comments from online trolls, complete strangers who think he’s making it up, that he had to have known how to play all along. He also draws occasional resentment from artists who have labored for years to acquire the skills that he stumbled upon. Even his dear friend Rick, who has worked for decades to improve at guitar, admits that in addition to being proud of his friend, he’s also jealous. Derek dusts off the doubters, but he’s humble before the bona fide musicians, because while the music in his head came without explanation, it also came unfinished. He had no technique, didn’t know the difference between a damper and a sostenuto. He could play a complex original piece reflexively, but he couldn’t tap out “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” He still only plays with three fingers on each hand, while most pianists use all five. Over the past decade, he’s worked hard to refine his talent, to learn how to transpose his music, to play cover songs, and to sing along with his instrument. He considers it an obligation—another price to pay for this blessing. Derek and those around him also believe the syndrome has enriched his life in other ways. He says he’s more in tune with people, more sensitive, and certainly more appreciative of all that he has. “His personality changed, to a point,” says Shelley. “He’s so happy and enthused about getting his music out there.” Besides, Derek feels that he can stand for something more than
F1 SuddenSavant_DWR.indd 73
just the music. He is an example of what we all could be. “It’s not that I understand human potential any better than anyone else,” he says. “I just understand that there is so much more of it than we know.” Back in the music shop, after 30 minutes of filling the stuffy studio with his music, Derek is drenched in sweat. Satisfied that he’s gotten his fix for the day, he grabs his iPad, breaks out into the air-conditioned showroom, and flip-flops his way
to the front desk, where the elderly shop owner is waiting. As the owner pens an invoice for $7, Derek, who hasn’t known silence for 10 years, reflexively breaks the ice. “Thanks so much,” he says. “It’s nice to know you guys are out here.” “No problem,” says the owner. “How long have you been playing?” Tony Rehagen writes for Pacific Standard, GQ GQ, and ESPN. Founded in 1981, Kiddie Academy has more than 100 locations.
EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION After welcoming a daughter in 2005, Sunny and Saj Rizvi searched for a childcare environment that was caring, clean, and educational. When they couldn’t find a place near their Chicago home that fit their criteria, they decided to open a Kiddie Academy. An educational childcare company, Kiddie Academy teaches a curriculum called “Life Essentials” that combines academics, character education, and fun.
“
I was looking for a financial investment that could provide ongoing income to sustain our family for the long haul.
”
Franchisees David and Shannon Willis
“It’s hard to describe how fantastic it is to get ready for work in the morning and know that we’ll also be spending time with our children while building our business,” says Sunny, a teacher by
trade. “We often hear from our customers that our children are thriving in the environment we’ve built at our academies. They’re excited to go every day, and often reluctant to leave.”
Investing in the future While working in corporate America, David Willis witnessed the uncertainty that comes with being an employee instead of an owner, particularly in the banking segment. He says “I was looking for a financial investment that could provide ongoing income to sustain our family for the long haul.” As a result, David chose to purchase real estate and build an all-new location with support from Kiddie Academy’s Real Estate and Construction teams. With prior business experience working for brands such as GE and Bank of America, David did a great deal of research before deciding to open his Kiddie Academy of Charlotte – Blakeney in August, 2011. He knew the market, believed in the Kiddie Academy concept, and most importantly, understood what children and parents need from a childcare center. His customer-centric approach has distinguished his Kiddie Academy in the market.
For David Willis, building a new Kiddie Academy location helped him to reach both a personal and professional goal. “Finding childcare for my two children certainly spurred me to consider opening my own business. My wife and I couldn’t find the educational experience we wanted for our own children, so we saw opening our Kiddie Academy as an investment in our children’s future as well as a business venture.” Over the last several years David and his academy have won several awards, including Community Leadership, Sales and Customer Service, Best Practices: Character Education, Developmentally Appropriate Curriculum, Health and Fitness and Technology Education.

Mosquitos are a nuisance, but, more importantly, they’re a health risk. Initially started as a mom-andpop mosquito control business in 2010, Mosquito Joe has turned into one of the nation’s most promising franchises. The franchise also offers 15 small-batch ice creams.
The slogan for Smallcakes Cupcakery and Creamery, founded in Overland Park, Kansas, is “Maybe a cupcake will help?” On both a consumer and corporate level, the company hopes their slogan inspires compassion. Franchisees bake and frost Smallcakes’ 18 signature flavors every morning, and look for opportunities to donate leftovers to local charities at the end of the day. Founder Jeff Martin says they don’t dictate the charity because they like to give franchise owners flexibility. It’s that same mindset that allows their entrepreneurs to succeed.

TAKE A NATURAL APPROACH TO MENOPAUSE When your body starts transitioning into menopause (which is officially marked by 12 months without a menstrual period), it’s called perimenopause. This can begin as early as your mid-30s, although it’s more common for women to notice signs in their 40s. Side effects of menopause include emotional sensitivity, decreased libido, sleep problems, hot flashes, and weight gain. These physical and emotional variations can be difficult to endure, but there are several products and treatments to help make the process easier, including natural supplements. DreamBrands, a Phoenix-based company that focuses on “defying maturity,” offers a supplement called Internal Harmony Menopause Relief. Aimed at reducing
the frequency and duration of hot flashes and night sweats, it contains a non-soy genistein that has proven safe and effective in human clinical studies. Another way to make menopause easier, according to DreamBrands COO Cecile Kehoe, is to put your comfort first and focus on your attitude toward menopause as you endure the hormonal shift. “Understanding that this is a natural process and not a failing of the body will always help. Eating healthy foods and exercising is always a great start,” Kehoe says. “Keep cool and wear comfortable clothing. Get as much rest and sleep as possible. Try the many programs that are available to help with relaxation, like yoga, tai chi, and meditation.”
Routine exercise and a healthy diet can also help minimize menopause symptoms.

The hat’s discrete design makes it an easy addition to any outfit.
TRY ON A NEW HAT Hair loss is another symptom of menopause and growing older. Perhaps you’ve noticed more hair gathered in your comb or shower drain, and you’re wondering how to restore hair growth. Men typically use hair plugs, prescription drugs, or topical solutions, but these options have proven
F1_SAS_AK.indd 94
less effective—or are unavailable— for women. Fortunately, laser hair therapy is an increasingly popular method of treating hair loss in women: It’s painless, easy, and usually void of side effects. Consider adding a Capillus hat to your wardrobe. The FDAapproved product includes 82 laser
diodes—more than most options on the market—that fit nicely into a regular baseball cap. Its discreet and comfortable style blends with powerful technology to aid your hair replacement efforts. One major difference between the Capillus design and other laser hair treatments is how easy the system is to use. Forget recurring doctor’s appointments or the sore arms that result from holding a laser wand above your head. If you wear your hat for 30 minutes a day, every other day, you should see visible results as the lasers stimulate and energize your hair follicles, encouraging growth. Dr. Robert Leonard, founder and chief surgeon of Leonard Hair Transplant Associates in the New England area, is a strong proponent of Capillus. “I have provided low-level laser therapy to my patients at my practice for the last 20 years, mostly using large office-based devices,” Leonard says. “About four years ago, I learned about the Capillus272 PRO and was intrigued. I totally replaced my practice with the Capillus272 PRO home-based device and my patients are very pleased.”

ADDRESS A COMMON PROBLEM Irritable bowel syndrome is a chronic illness that affects the large intestine in women of all ages. Symptoms include cramping, bloating, gas, stomach pain, constipation, and diarrhea. While IBS is more common among women than men (researchers are still working to understand why), doctors agree that one of the

most effective ways to manage your IBS is by monitoring what you eat. A gluten-free diet may help, as well as identifying food intolerances, but ultimately there is no cure. For additional support, a supplement called Atrantíl can provide comfort through its blend of botanical extracts that works to eliminate bacterial overgrowth in the small bowel. “Overall digestive health starts with diet and lifestyle. Managing stress and eating a diet low in refined foods can make a big difference,” says Brandi Scott, co-founder and chief medical research officer of KBS Research, Atrantíl’s parent company. “However, if you experience digestive issues, it is important to see a gastroenterologist in order to make sure nothing else is going on.” As your body ages, a positive and proactive attitude can make a significant difference. Pay attention to what your body and mind need, so you can fully embrace the next phase of your life.

One Question
Harry Connick Jr.,
My experiences on Broadway have been pretty special, because it’s such a demanding way to express yourself. The time commitment is extreme, but it’s also the physicality of it—of doing eight shows a week—and the immediacy of the audience's response. It’s a very specific art form. It’s different than concerts, different than film, different than TV. I have a lot of favorites, but I look back at my Broadway experiences really fondly. Harry’s new daytime show, Harry, premiered last month.
