Gary’s Greeting

The Ultimate Team Sport teamwork and thought I’d share with you some of what I told the graduates. Business is the ultimate team sport. Everyone wants to see [insert your team here] win championships. In order to win championships, you have to be part of a great team. No one will ever be fully independent throughout their lives. Everyone is part of a team, in some form or fashion, and I don’t know anyone who wants to be a part of a losing team. At Southwest, we call ourselves a Family, but we’re also a Team, one that has stuck together through wins and

losses. Southwest is one of the only Fortune 500 companies to never have an involuntary furlough in our Company’s history. As I told the graduates, you can get paid all the money in the world, but if you don’t believe in what you’re doing— and if you don’t respect, admire, and like your teammates—you won’t be happy. I can’t stress enough how rewarding and important it is to find a great team. A big part of being on a team is how you interact with your teammates. Whether it’s the media, social media, or politics, there is a pervasive lack of respect and civility in the world today. Companies, and teams within companies, can begin to reverse this ugly trend with leadership and teamwork. At Southwest, we live by the Golden Rule. We make sure, in addition to working hard and getting results, that we treat everyone with respect. My advice to anyone passionate about being part of a championship team is to be positive, be optimistic, and make civility a priority. Great leaders and teams inspire, recognize, appreciate, and love their people. Great teams are built on love and trust—not fear. Oh, and one final thought: Hook ’em, Horns! (Sorry, couldn’t resist.)

This past May, I had the honor of returning to my alma mater, The University of Texas at Austin, to give the commencement speech to the McCombs School of Business graduating class of 2017. Speaking to young men and women who are about to embark on their professional journeys is a real passion of mine—after all, they are the future. One piece of advice I shared with them is the important role that teamwork will play in their lives—both professionally and personally. With football season being in full swing, I’ve been thinking about

NEW ADDITIONS

Introducing the Boeing 737 MAX 8

Southwest Airlines is taking Customer Experience to the max. Southwest is committed to delivering low fares and an outstanding Customer Experience. That philosophy continues this month with the launch of the new Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft into our fleet. With the introduction of the MAX 8, Southwest also celebrates the addition of music onboard the new aircraft and at select airports across the country. These exciting Customer Experience milestones will continue as we accept delivery of more than 25 MAX 8 aircraft over the next two years. Our Customers will experience the enhancements of the MAX 8 in a variety of ways. The Boeing Sky Interior features modern sculpted sidewalls and windows, with larger, pivoting overhead stowage bins. The interior LED lighting provides the sense of spaciousness, while enhanced lighting scenes on the sidewalls and ceiling invite Customers into a modern, comfortable cabin. Customers will also

experience the lighting scenes throughout their flight. During boarding, for example, they will experience cool blue LED lighting with a touch of red—a nod to Southwest’s color scheme. Adding the MAX 8 to the Southwest fleet also allows us to introduce a new music-infused Customer Experience onboard flights serviced by MAX 8 aircraft. We’ve curated custom onboard playlists that will run during boarding and deplaning to connect our Southwest sound with our Customers. These mood-based playlists feature a variety of genres and artists, with one playlist specific to featuring Southwest’s Artists on the Rise. To celebrate Southwest’s first revenue flights operated by the MAX 8, the band Safety Suit—who is also featured as an Artist on the Rise within the onboard playlist—performed a Live at 35® concert onboard a flight full of surprised Customers. You can watch video of their performance by visiting Southwest.fm, Southwest’s destination for music. With the introduction of the MAX 8 aircraft into the Southwest fleet, we’re celebrating our new music capabilities, infusing them into the Customer Experience, and inspiring the soundtrack to your life’s journey. —Tony Roach, Marketing

(L-R) Provisioning Agent Miguel Diaz, Operations Agent Sheila DiPace, and Provisioning Agent Carlos Rivera

Recycling Ringleaders

Southwest Airlines is committed to being green.

In 2009, Southwest tapped into our greatest asset, our People, to establish a network of Green Ambassadors throughout the Company. These Employees channel their passion for the environment to inspire, motivate, and engage their Cohearts in Southwest’s green efforts. These volunteers are challenged to innovate and create ways to make their workplaces and communities greener. Kicking green passion into action, Green Ambassadors were presented with a challenge—to find something unique to recycle and help Southwest reduce our impact on the environment. The idea to recycle six-pack rings began in Orlando, thanks to the dedication of both Regional Lead Green Ambassador and Orlando Operations Agent Sheila DiPace and Hi-Cone, a ring carrier manufacturer. Nearly three decades ago, Hi-Cone started the Ring Leader Recycling Program, an environmental

education and ring carrier recycling campaign that has reached 22 million people, recycled 2.7 million pounds of ring carriers, and has helped reduce ring carrier debris by 75 percent. That green challenge and pilot project has evolved into the Southwest Ring Leader Program, which expanded throughout our Provisioning Stations earlier this year. Green Ambassadors work with our Provisioning locations to collect six-pack rings and ship them back to Hi-Cone for use in open loop recycling. This program has a tremendous environmental impact by reducing litter, decreasing the amount of landfill waste, and lowering the amount of natural resources needed to create new plastic products. Over the last eight years, we’ve worked with HiCone to recycle more than 7,000 pounds, or nearly 900,000 six-pack rings—end to end, that’s close to 100 miles of six-pack rings. As of July 2017, we are the largest single contributor of recycled ring carriers through the Ring Leader Recycling Program. Southwest and Hi-Cone have a shared commitment to mitigating our impact on the environment through repurposing and recycling. —Andrea Cavanagh, Community Programs

seat in front of my mom, and asked her if she wanted to dance. He said he wasn’t going to see his wife for three days and needed a dance partner. He reached out for her hands, and the two of them twostepped off the plane, with Mom smiling all the while! The whole plane watched in amazement and gratitude. The tenderness of this young man toward my mom was heartwarming. He treated her with respect, kindness, and dignity. In my mind, he was an angel who appeared at just the right moment. I already loved flying with Southwest, but I will carry this experience forever in my heart. —Amy Engelhardt

Dear Southwest,

I was traveling to Denver, moving my elderly mother to my home. She has dementia, and sometimes seemingly easy tasks become difficult. When it was time to exit the plane, my mom sort of froze and didn’t understand that she needed to walk out to the aisle. Seemingly out of nowhere, flight attendant James Henderson came over and asked me how he could help. I told him I needed help with my mom, and he jumped into action. James strapped my backpack on his back, got in the

A PERSONAL TOUCH

My husband and I were conversing with flight attendant Trina Hood and mentioned we were flying home for our grandson’s 10th birthday. A few minutes later, Trina came back by and asked me to write down my grandson’s name, which is Mason. I thought at the end of the flight she was going to mention his name and say happy birthday. No, she went way beyond that! She came back 30 minutes later and had made a bag with Mason’s name and balloons colored on the outside, and filled with goodies— apple juice, crackers, nuts, and colored tissues. Trina is a gem. And by the way, my other grandchildren want us to fly on their birthdays so they can get a gift bag. —Bill and Rhonda Gesell

I had been alone with our baby and could not wait for that awful time to be over. My daughter was doing that baby chat/scream while waiting to board, and a man near us didn’t seem to think it was as cute as I did. He told me to “stick a binky in that thing’s mouth.” Months of stress came out at once as I bawled my eyes out in the waiting area. I boarded the plane and headed toward the back, where my guardian angel, flight attendant Danette Foster, was waiting. I don’t know if she saw me crying, but she certainly saw me struggling to get situated. She took my daughter up and down the aisle while welcoming other passengers aboard, introduced her to everyone, and even closed the luggage bins with her in arm. It gave me the chance to compose myself after a long day of flying and long months of new motherhood. That night, Danette did more than hold my baby for me; she held me together emotionally. I’ve flown Southwest since then and have seen that same “Danette spirit” on just about every

flight. The attendants have offered to hold my baby while I use the restroom and entertained my crazy child while I often fly alone. Thank you for instilling a company culture that puts people, not profits, first. —Stephanie Vazquez RED CARPET SERVICE

My daughter, who is married to a Marine, went into early labor, so I had to rush from Sacramento to New Orleans to help. While boarding, I asked flight attendant Tracy Albright how to access the WiFi on my phone so I could keep in touch with the maternity nurses. It was just a matter of hours before she would deliver the baby! After we landed, Tracy announced, “We have a grandmother on the plane who is rushing to the birth of her grandchild whose father is a Marine. We’d like to let her off the plane first.” Not only did everyone agree, but they also cheered and clapped as I left the plane—I was in tears by the time I got off. What a great bunch of passengers, and what a caring flight crew. —Cecelia Cutler

THE BABY WHISPERER

We recently flew Southwest with our 7-year-old son and our 1 1/2-year-old daughter. We thought we had prepared everything possible to keep our kiddos entertained, but about 10 minutes into the flight, our daughter was terrified and crying. Each time she’d start to fall asleep, she’d wake up and start crying again. We offered to buy drinks for those seated in front of us, but we had no other ideas of how to make things better. Flight attendant Linda Russell approached us and asked if she could hold her. Immediately, our daughter was at ease. Linda then asked if it would be OK if she walked with her through the plane to let her “help” pass out wings to the kids on the flight—of course we didn’t mind. After that, we offered to take our daughter back, but Linda asked to hold her a little longer because she thought she’d be able to get her to sleep. She was right—within minutes, she was asleep. Linda was an absolute lifesaver to our little one, and I cannot thank her enough. —Erin Cartright

DATING ROI

Technology has made dating more complicated and impersonal. Hiring a matchmaker might be the smartest investment you could make in your personal life. At first, Larry Chiarelli, director at a tech start up, thought he was doing all he needed. Sign up on multiple dating websites. Meet lots of women. Eventually, the right one would come along – except she never did. So he decided to bring in the professionals and hired It’s Just Lunch. IJL’s matchmakers got to know him and his preferences. They selected his dates, arranged schedules, and even made the restaurant reservations. Dating 

became stress-free and fun. Larry was a practical guy and didn’t believe in love-at-first-sight, but that was until IJL introduced him to Ping.

so I could feel some breathing room. I needed to slow things down to speed them up. IJL fit that criteria perfectly for me.

What was your dating life like before joining It’s Just Lunch? Lawrence: Chaotic! I was meeting a lot of women but not the right women for me. Online dating was time consuming and stressful. I needed someone to help out, to relieve me of the dating busy work

Ping: I was very busy with work when I discovered IJL. I was seeing different people I mostly met through friends and by attending events. Online dating seemed so time consuming so I was never willing to invest what little time I had into something so hit and miss.

I used to tell my friends: Who has time for online dating…browsing through profiles all night when I could be doing something else with my time." Why did you decide to join It’s Just Lunch? L: A good friend of mine mentioned that IJL may be a good resource for meeting women who were a better match for me. Plus, joining would let me get back some time in my life that was sorely lacking.

P: I fly frequently for work and for fun, and when I saw It’s Just Lunch in the airline magazine, it was as if the matchmaker was talking to me! One day after a particularly long flight and wanting to snuggle with someone and watch a movie, I decided it couldn't hurt to give it a try. What did you enjoy most about the It's Just Lunch process? L: Having someone doing all the work to select and schedule a date. It was like I had my own personal dating concierge to take care of all the details. All I had to do was be on time for my date and be myself. It really was a stress-free experience.

P: The stress-free experience! I had a professional matchmaker to select matches and set up restaurant reservations for me. All I needed to do was to show up and focus on getting to know my date.

What was it like working with the It's Just Lunch matchmakers? L: Easy and convenient. At the time the company I was working for was going through a merger so I was away from home quite a bit in all day meetings. I’d finish my day and there would be a

voicemail from my matchmaker telling me about my next match. I’d call back, get the details and run through my availability. The next thing I knew I was in front of an interesting woman having a great conversation. P: Stress-free and fun! Exactly what I needed because dating can be so frustrating. I always looked forward to meeting my next match.

Do you have any advice for singles who want to meet that special someone? L: I often ask my clients: Would you rather drive across the country in a Toyota Corolla or a BMW 5 series? They always say the 5 series. You get what you pay for. Investing in yourself and your future with someone special means investing in the right matchmaking service. For me that was It’s Just Lunch. P: Invest in your own happiness, it is always worth it. I never would have met Larry if I hadn’t joined It’s Just Lunch. It’s the best decision I've ever made.

IT’S JUST LUNCH SIGNATURE MATCHMAKING PROCESS: 1 Through a series of conversations, we get to know you and your relationship goals. 2 Your match is hand-selected and your date arranged. Dear Reader, Since this issue is dedicated to animals, I can tell you about something that happened when my son, George, was five. (If you think a five-year-old boy has nothing to do with animals, then you clearly haven’t met a fiveyear-old boy.) George was climbing New Hampshire’s Mount Cardigan with his cousin, Clay, and their mothers when the boys raced ahead, took the wrong trail, and promptly got themselves lost. At a very early age, George had been taught that if he ever lost his way, he should sit down and wait for help. So he and Clay perched on a rock. George took out a pocketknife of mysterious origin and calmly began to whittle a stick. They could hear their frantic mothers calling, but their instructions had left out the part about answering. So they sat quietly, and George kept whittling. Eventually a hiker came along and spotted the boys. “Are you lost?” she asked. George nodded. “You’re supposed to get our mothers.” And the hiker did.

While our boy is now fully grown, he still knows to sit down and whittle his thoughts whenever he’s lost. He has the added knowledge that when someone calls, especially his parents, he should answer. But I love the attitude of his 5-year-old self. He knew what a stranger, someone not of his flesh and blood, was supposed to do. Pets tend to have the same healthy attitude. Especially cats: They know exactly what you’re supposed to do, and, like an intelligent 5-year-old, are happy to tell you. I believe, in fact, that this is the most important wisdom animals have to teach us. You’re supposed to help. I admire those who assume help will come, even when they’ve strayed and gotten themselves lost. After all, isn’t this what faith is?

Dear Editor,

I’ve read countless articles and books on sports, but had never heard of Larry Nelson. Then, here I am, traveling from Minneapolis to Chicago, and I pick up JK Nickell’s story on the Vietnam hero turned golfer who has never been truly appreciated [“Meet Larry Nelson,” August 2017]. It made me a Larry Nelson fan and, heck, even a fan of golf. Thank you for making this short flight one of the most enjoyable I’ve been on. Danny Smith

I just read JK Nickell’s article on a flight from Houston to Denver. I played golf and followed the pro scene during the 1970s (I broke par a couple times), but dropped it after that. I never knew (or at least don’t remember) the name Larry Nelson. us pronounce “caramel” with three syllables. Forget about favoring “tomay-to” over “to-mah-to.” After surveying more than 1,000 adults, candy company Werther’s Original discovered that there’s some disagreement over whether or not to stretch out “caramel.” What’s driving our pronunciation preferences? Most of the sticky situation can be blamed on regional differences. Fifty-seven percent of Midwesterners opt for the short and sweet “karmuhl,” but in the West, South, and Northeast, the three-syllable style reigns. Still no word on whether we should call the whole thing off.

ORDE R THIS

Husk Fiz

A few years back, the bartenders at Small Brewpub in Dallas were flipping through George Kappeler’s 1895 book, Modern American Drinks, looking for cocktails to feature on their menu. They stumbled across the New Orleans Fiz, a lemon and gin drink frothed with cream, and tossed it up on the chalkboard. Customers loved it, so owner Benj Pocta started playing around with a lactose-free version. The Husk Fiz was born. Swapping cream for coconut milk, the new take still has the citrusy bite of a standard fizz, but with a tropical and floral slant. “Ultimately, we’re most pleased when both the cocktail geek and the guest who just wants a solid drink to enjoy with friends find something on our menu,” Pocta says.

MAKE IT ← Combine 1½ ounces London Dry gin, ¾ ounce coconut milk, ¾ ounce coriander syrup*, ½ ounce lime juice, and a lime leaf into an ice-filled shaker; shake until the exterior of the shaker is frosty. Strain into a tall, chilled glass and top with 2 ounces chilled club soda. Spritz with orange blossom water and garnish with lime leaf. *Put 500 grams sugar, 500 grams water, and 75 grams coriander seeds in a pan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and let simmer for about 10 minutes. Once cool, strain out the coriander.

Looking for lime leaves? Try a Southeast Asian grocery store.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY VIMVERTIGO/ISTOCK

There’s nothing quite like being in the hot seat. After analyzing more than 250,000 interview reviews, job search site Glassdoor found that adding interviewers adds stress. Thankfully, there’s a silver lining to successfully navigating a trickier hiring process. “A more difficult interview often leads to more satisfied employees later on,” says Andrew Chamberlain, Glassdoor’s chief economist. “Harder questions give employers a better understanding of how you think, and your responses give them a glimpse into how you’d perform on the job. Employees who did well throughout the process are likely a better fit, and those who find they fit well with a company tend to be more satisfied.” Before you go: Did you have any questions for us?

HARD KNOCKS The research found that phone interviews and skills tests also served as stressors, increasing difficulty by 9 percent and 8 percent, respectively.

OUT TAKES LEARNED BEHAVIOR It’s dangerous to assume everyone is inherently courageous and they just need to act. Our research found that courage is actually four skill sets that can be taught, developed, observed, and measured.

Brené Brown

The best-selling author and social scientist says true belonging takes a leap of faith. Fitting in is trying to assimilate, whereas belonging doesn’t ask us to change— it asks us to be authentic. I once held a meeting where I told everyone at my company what I expected them to do. One person, who is now the president, raised her hand and said, “I completely disagree.” As a CEO, I don’t want people around me who say “yes” when they

actually question the decisions I’m making. We have to normalize discomfort by giving and receiving uncomfortable feedback and having hard conversations. We have to reward vulnerability and people who say what’s on their mind and put the brakes on an idea that everyone else thinks is great. That’s how we get growth, innovation, and learning.

FAVORITE TED TALK I love Tim Urban’s talk on procrastination. He starts with a story about how he wrote his 90-page senior thesis in 72 hours. I have a daughter who just started college, so it’s especially relevant now.

On the map, I see Corn Creek, Crocker Creek, and Steak Bake Creek, all of which splinter from the southern fork of the Cottonwood. There is also a north fork, and both are tributaries of the Neosho River, which is a tributary of the Arkansas River, which is one of many tributaries in the Mississippi River watershed. There is fenced property on our left, and cows graze in a modest pasture behind a ranch house. One, its coat the color of cinnamon and matted with dirt, runs alongside

our car as we drive past. We periodically glimpse the Little Cedar Creek, which is nearly dry, on our right, the water so scant that we can see gravelly pink and gray limestone in the creek bed. The mood changes when we cannot find what we are looking for, and I fear that Bob, my father-in-law, is feeling defeated. He turns onto state Route 177, which will eventually get us to I-35 and back home to Topeka. The cattle on the more vast, elevated pastures along the highway graze in small groupings. They will gain weight throughout the spring and summer, and be sold in October. occasionally, bison being raised. As we merge onto I-35, we see orange flames blazing through a hilly pasture on the other side of the highway. Thick black smoke gathers beneath the low-hanging clouds. Throughout the afternoon, we have noticed isolate wisps of gray smoke wafting faintly like chimney smoke from the charred hills. It is my first time visiting Kansas during the springtime, and Bob explains that every April, as the grazing season begins, the pastures are burned to clear dry brush and expose newer soil, which readily releases its nutrients. New bluestem grass springs to life almost immediately, poking through the exposed earth. The Flint Hills are interspersed with cottonwoods and cedars, and the singular shape of each gnarled tree is magnificent, even in daylight. The annual burns also prohibit new tree growth, which renders the ones that are here more distinct. The plumes of smoke we have seen for most of the day are from the last burning embers of slowly dying fires. But the advancing flames we see now are bright and on the move. They will part the brown grass from the earth and shock the soil awake. Bob pulls over to think. This initial phase of burning, the first touch of fire to dry grass, will not last long. We are on the opposite side of the road as the burning pasture, and Bob, who drives with his camera on his lap, wants to photograph the flames as they tear through the grass. He takes the next exit, and my husband, Derek, navigates us closer to the pasture using the map on his phone. Bob’s turns become deft and precise. He pauses briefly to photograph a squirrel with glassy eyes that stands on top of a mailbox. Bob has owned at least a dozen cameras in his lifetime—the first a Yashica rangefinder purchased at the Tinker Main Exchange when he was stationed at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma. Newly married, he lived in an apartment

9/5/17 1:31 PM

in Midwest City and, on weekends with my mother-in-law, photographed rolling hills and open prairie, the sun seeming to slip through a seam in the earth as it fell behind the horizon. When they returned to Wichita, he bought a Yashica SLR that allowed the photographer to see the image that will be captured directly through the lens. Assignments for a photography class led him on solo journeys to the arboretum and through the alleys between aircraft manufacturing plants. These days, he occasionally drives back to Wichita, accompanied by a friend from his photography club in Topeka. At the Burlington Northern Santa Fe rail stop, they photograph Boeing fuselages loaded on trains bound for Seattle. They drive to Emporia, Newton, Kansas City, and Falls City, Nebraska—any town a steam engine might pass through. Fire is a change from the norm: Close-ups of flames might make for an unusual submission to the contests his photography club enters. But Derek speculates that Bob is interested in holding on to something that might otherwise be lost to time. I speculate that chasing fire is akin to chasing trains: Both tear freely through this open landscape. Another type of silence settles in the car—not the disconcerting sort, where we might speculate as to one another’s sensitivities, but the kind that is rich with awareness. WHEN WE GLIMPSE a shock of orange a few feet from the car and just uphill, Bob brakes and parks on the shoulder. Low flames, less than a foot high, weave through the remaining grass a few feet away from the passenger side of the car. Bob takes off, cupping the bottom of his camera in one palm as he walks uphill on the pasture that we had tracked from the car. He is in that exalted creative space where there are no choices to be made, a space that, as a writer, I

long for—where instinct is powerful and clarity is abundant. Since we spotted the flames, the only question for Bob has been, How do we get as close as possible? He pauses, searching for the flames we had glimpsed from the road— upon getting closer, much of the hillside is already like the last moments around a campfire, speckled with ash. Bob climbs the back of the pasture, a steep grade almost perpendicular to the road. From the car, the flames had seemed to travel downhill. But when I see him crouch and I watch the steadily advancing low orange flame rimmed with black smoke broach the precipice of the hill, I realize that they are climbing. He crouches to capture the exact interchange between the fire and the dry grass. A full flame seems to momentarily take hold of the grass, and then suction it upward. As the flame absorbs the grass, it is fitful motion. Derek, my mother-in-law, and I step onto the pasture. We see a winding path of small fires weaving through the grass like burning footprints. Once robust, the fire has broken into pieces and gravitated to the driest grass. The fire’s path mirrors the meandering creeks in the back hills, but instead of sinking into the muddy earth like the shallow creeks, the fire strains away from the land. Bob disappears for a few minutes, pursuing freshly lit flames. In one of his photographs, the edges of a robust flame break from the center in small bits, scattering in the air like an archipelago. In another, when the flames are at their highest and the concentrate of yellow and orange most luminous, an orange seam halves the pasture and delicate wisps of black smoke swirl above the restless fire like tarnish on silver. We remain until Bob turns toward the car and says happily, “Let’s go find some more fire.” AT A SCENIC OVERLOOK, Bob points out the landscape of the Flint Hills at a distance. The

shadowy slopes are interspersed with shrubs and cottonwood, sycamore, and evergreen cedar trees; the latter seem to spring from the side of the road, even when it is dry and rocky, in miniature. The next time we come this way, it’s winter of the following year, and Derek drives. On the way home from Alma, Kansas, Bob and my mother-in-law sit in the back seat, his camera pack on the seat between them, as well as a 1-inch spiral-bound book filled with maps and routes for exploring the small towns of Kansas. We have a debate when leaving Alma about the best way onto the Skyline Mill Scenic Byway, and soon we realize we are instead on the Native Stone Scenic Byway, which winds south, then east, and then north again, home to Topeka. The prairie will not burn for another five months. The pastoral expanse is entrancing, the landscape of peaks and valleys skirting shadow and light. I concentrate on the movement of the shadows, the way in which light can climb and sprawl and vanish. We wend a broad curve and, suddenly, the hills and meadows are bathed in high-chroma yellow sunlight, as in a high-contrast photo. The horizon is somewhere beyond the mounds of rolling hills. The earth seems to expand and press into the atmosphere, enveloped by a glowing horizon. On sparse allotments of ranchland, black and brown cows graze. There is a moment, again where we are unsure of the way home, and Derek suggests we continue on the scenic byway. Sunset begins subtly, the horizon purpling. Above the purple rim, a band of fiery orange emerges, the colors blended together at their edges. Another band of pale orange follows, the colors stacked like panels in a Rothko painting. Buttery yellow light glows softly, mingling with the emerging night. Amy Beth Wright lives in Brooklyn. Email her at amybeth21@gmail.com.

s you can imagine, funeral care is fulfilling but emotionally draining work. I’m a mortician in Austin, Texas, and last year, I adopted a dog, an Australian shepherd and border collie mix, to help me decompress. It quickly became clear that the black-and-white pup with mismatched blue and brown eyes was ready to do much, much more. Widdle Kermit Ambrosius von Przygodski (named partly for everyone’s favorite frog and partly for a character played by David Bowie—you can just call him Kermit) is now my sidekick and the other half of Texas’ first certified dog team working in funeral care. I always clear it with families and staff first, and when they say yes, Kermit is on duty as a calming presence for anyone who needs him— staff included. He mostly stays in one place, within eyesight, and waits for people to come up to him. Sometimes, though, he approaches the grieving. What’s been incredible to see is how he can spot precisely who that is. One afternoon shortly after I got him, the owner of the Austin funeral home I partner with was seeing a family in the main office. Kermit walked right up to the widow and put his head in her lap, and that bit of comfort was what helped her finish arranging her husband’s services. He’ll also interact with children a lot; a funeral can be a strange and difficult place for them, and he helps them cope. One of Kermit’s greatest gifts is his approachability. His eyes and his face make him so easy to talk to—even about the saddest situations—and he brings out a smile in everyone who spends time with him. We’ve worked with trainer Janet Perry and the Austin Dog Alliance to receive his therapy certification. Therapy animals must be at least 1 year old, so after Kermit’s first birthday in the spring, we made everything official through the Austin Dog Alliance’s certification program. Kermit has also helped me with my anxiety and fear of the public. I’m always on point as a funeral director, but get me into a social situation and my nerves can take over. Having him by my side has been a profound experience, as both his owner and his teammate, and I’m very proud of him. Sonya Vatomsky is a writer and researcher based in the Pacific Northwest. The camels all had their own personalities. One of the girls, Jez, would stand up and rock if she got bored. We took them to events, and the first time she did that on the road, she got the trailer fishtailing. But Jez loved hamburger buns. Throw some in there, and she’d be fine. Irving was born with tendinitis in his right front leg; his mother wanted nothing to do with him. So he moved into the house, and we took turns feeding him from a 2-liter soda bottle. He would lie in our living room, and my 4-year-old nephew, Joshua, would lean against him, and they would watch TV. If you left a glass sitting around, Irving would pick it up and drink it—camels’ lips are soft, and they can use them like fingers. He’d also press the doorbell with his lip and wait for somebody to come; my dad accused me of playing doorbell ditch. We had two bulls, Omar and Cosmo, and Cosmo was my buddy. He was 2,200 pounds and the top of his head reached over 8 feet, but he would still nuzzle you. (Camels can be giant teddy bears.) Once, my brother and I were in the barn, and, just being boys, he punched me. Cosmo was kicking at the stall door, leaning out, trying to get my brother. It took a lot of talking to calm him down. I could do things with Cosmo nobody else could. When he needed to go to the doctor, I had to take him. Once, when I walked into the pen, he didn’t recognize me and he snapped. I said, “Cosmo, you knock that off.” At the vet’s pen, I introduced Cosmo, had the vet touch him, and said, “Cosmo, do you feel that? That’s your doctor. He’s trying to help you.” To the end, when Cosmo’s kidneys shut down and he passed, that was the only doctor who could touch him. Cosmo was a great listener. I could go to the barn and vent, and he would bellow. Whether he understood what I was saying, I have no idea, but his responses were always in the right spots. FAMILY PHOTO COURTESY OF LIANA AGHAJANIAN

I

spent most of my childhood begging for a pet I knew I would never receive. I begged when I came home from school, on our weekly trips to the grocery store, and while we watched TV. I begged while my mother cooked, the sound of my tiny, dejected voice and the aromatic smell of dishes like zereshk polo—white rice with saffron and dried barberry fruit—permeating the house together. The answer came in various tones and words, but always ended up being the same: It was never going to happen. Like all kids growing up in America, I wanted a dog. I watched Beethoven and Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey so many times that I wore out the VHS tapes. When I was invited over to a friend’s house, I’d interact more with the family dog than my peers. I made up my mind at a young age that I was going to be a veterinarian and memorized The author every breed I could from (far right) books I checked out at with her the library. family in 1991 But I knew instinctively that not having a dog was something that set me apart from my friends and classmates, that I would always be teetering between multiple identities and cultures, never really fitting in both. Not being allowed to have a dog meant that I wasn’t fully American. Born in Tehran, Iran, to parents of Armenian extraction, I was 3 when I came to the U.S. with my family as a refugee in 1987. My early childhood years were spent in the basement with my extended family as the Iran-Iraq War raged around us and bomb sirens echoed throughout the city. When we landed in Los Angeles after a

year in limbo, nothing would be the same again—not because we made a choice, but because there were no options left to consider. As we adjusted to our new, unfamiliar country, the life I lived in my house and the one I lived outside of it were vastly different from each other. At home I spoke Armenian; at school it was English. While most people spent their weekends with friends or playing sports, mine always consisted of get-togethers with my large extended family and enough food to feed a small village. As a child, I understood that stark divide through pet ownership. Due to religious and cultural beliefs common across the Middle East, dogs weren’t integral to—or even part of— everyday life the same way they were in America. Dogs were dirty. They shed. They pooped. They would ruin the house. They were not things you kept indoors, gave names to, or took on long walks. They were animals, far away from the thriving pet culture of the West, far from everything that Rin Tin Tin and Lassie stood for. Years later, friends and acquaintances from similar backgrounds revealed truths we now know to be self-evident: The possibility of having a dog was so remote, so unattainable that many didn’t even try asking. Instead they lived part of their childhoods in their 30s or 40s when, for the first time, they were the ones making the decisions about pets. CONTINUED ON PAGE 70

Everyone’s a Critic Chapel Hill, North Carolina’s literary circle now includes a dystopian-loving rat terrier. BY DANIEL WALLACE / ILLUSTRATION BY PAUL BLOW

F

ame, for a dog, is rare. Toto, Lassie, Benji, Snoopy. It’s a short list. This makes sense: On average, dogs live to be about 12 years old, which is a blink of the eye and very little time to distinguish themselves from the 500 million other dogs on Earth. People can live to be 100 and still, despite herculean effort, live in perfect anonymity. Even if we narrowed our focus—to a small American town, say—it would be hard to name a dog as being even locally eminent. Welcome to Plainsville, Home of Mugsy, the Dog Who Saved Emma Carter That Day She Fell in a Well. Not so in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where one of my two dogs, Maddie, the rat terrier, has become the chien du jour. Facebook friends and Instagram followers nationwide know of her. She has become, at least for this little while, possibly

more famous than I am, and for someone whose business deals in modicums of fame (me, not her), this is troubling. Because she is a dog. Most dogs don’t achieve fame on their own; they depend on us to be catapulted into that rarefied plane. This is what happened with Maddie, too: I discovered an app that made it appear her mouth was moving, and I recorded some commentary, and the app converted my voice (which is flat, a little nasally) into a curiously high-pitched plaintive tone. In the beginning, she reviewed basketball games from the 2017 NCAA Tournament, specifically the University of North Carolina Tar Heels, my alma mater and employer, who went on to win it. Afterward, she began reviewing books: new books and classics alike. She’s an objective, mostly appreciative reviewer, and has brought to

light some lesser-known novels. She’s fond of dystopian novels and stays away from books about dogs, because she finds them overly sentimental. People love her. Love her. I’m used to being approached by strangers who may have read a book of mine and want to tell me how they feel about it. But this is a new thing, fans who approach me, make sure I’m Daniel Wallace, and then only want to talk about my dog. I’m used to being asked to blurb books, to review them, but not as used to Maddie being asked to: Two authors and one major publisher have sent books to my address, to her attention. And by popular demand she now has a YouTube channel. I myself as a person/author/man about town have never once been asked to have a YouTube channel. This is disconcerting. I never wanted a YouTube channel, but now that she has one, I want one as well. Yes, I practically invented this dog, and so in a sense she is me, and is not, at the same time. Eventually you’re not sure who is who, and what’s real. The greatest irony is that fame generally reflects on the famous: As human beings, we know we’re famous because we’re told we’re famous. But Maddie doesn’t know. It’s lost on her and that, in the end, is a blessing. Because she will never change. She will never get too big for her britches, even though britches are something she has never worn. She has no ambition to be anything other than who she is. She is happy. She’s a good dog. So it’s me who’s the repository for her success. The other day, after a reading for my new novel, a woman came up to me and said, “I was listening to you read and realized you reminded me of someone. It was Maddie. You sound exactly like your dog.” Daniel Wallace is the author of six novels, including Big Fish and Extraordinary Adventures. Meet Maddie on Instagram @danielwallace1.

the cows close behind. But Renee manages to gun it through the pasture gate—just in the nick of time. She parks beside a tree and Tommy rips open the first bag of feed. The cows pour through the narrow gate, and Tommy and Renee walk among them, greeting them by name. Rowdy Girl Sanctuary, located about an hour south of Houston in Angleton, Texas, used to be an operating ranch that sold its cattle to the Texas beef industry. How it became a safe haven for nearly a hundred animals starts with a love story between two humans. RENEE AND TOMMY MET in a hotel bar in Lake Jackson, Texas, in 1990. Renee, decked out in leather and fringe, was singing on stage. A friend of Tommy’s had come for a drink, and soon called Tommy

to come meet the cute country singer. By midnight, the crowd was thinning, but then in walked Tommy. Renee came to him like a shot, draped herself in his lap, and crooned “Crazy” by Patsy Cline in his ear. He blushed from head to toe. “From there, we were inseparable,” Renee says. Renee has smooth skin and coppery brown hair and is usually wearing bright red cowboy boots. She’s a self-described visionary who often finds a way to get what she wants. Tommy, tall and mustachioed, is the logical sort. His even-tempered calm is a sharp contrast to Renee’s fiery nature. They first married in 1992, but divorced in 1997. Renee, a recovering alcoholic, had relapsed, losing both her marriage and the performing arts school she’d worked to build. As she tried to stay sober, she

threw herself into new endeavors: first a yoga studio, then a holistic wellness center. When the wellness center fell apart, a friend offered to help her become a real estate agent. By 2009, Renee was working in Pearland, Texas, at Shadow Creek Ranch, a master-planned community. She enjoyed helping people find and build beautiful new homes. It was well-suited to her outgoing personality, and she loved city life. As she settled into real estate, it occurred to her that Tommy, who’d bought and sold land since the ’80s, would approve of her new profession. “I always liked her,” Tommy says. “I just didn’t feel like being married to her.” Tommy lived in rural Angleton on his sprawling ranch, then a cow-and-calf operation, and also managed analytical labs at Dow Chemical Company. One day he was on the phone with Renee’s mother, who asked if he was seeing anyone. Though Tommy denies saying so at the time, Renee’s mother reported that he was still in love with Renee. “I think you should call him,” her mom advised. Renee did. The two reconnected, but it wasn’t long before they were at an impasse: They wanted to get married again, but Renee didn’t want to live in the country, and Tommy wasn’t about to leave it. He was nearing retirement, and the chemical plant was a short drive from the ranch. In the end, she came to him. Her high heels broke walking up the ranch’s long gravel driveway, and she ordered Tommy to pave it. He just laughed. “It was culture shock,” Renee says. “I missed city life terribly. I wanted to be able to go to my yoga classes, to the mall. I felt swallowed up.” But she was determined to make it work. Stubbornly, she ignored ranch life and stayed inside, keeping up her yoga practice. She ignored the cows as they grazed peacefully in the pasture. When Tommy asked her to bottle-feed

Koala-ty Time

Southwest Airlines takes a furry passenger on a cross-country flight. As part of the Species Survival Plan, a program developed by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, Katherine the koala was transported from the Los Angeles Zoo to the Palm Beach Zoo to meet Oz, her recommended match. L.A. Zoo animal keeper Kevin Gorowski joined Katherine onboard on August 15.

how do you prepare a koala for a cross-country flight? “Well, I reminded her every day to look her best and get ready for a trip to meet someone new. [laughs] No, I wanted to make sure she got food and felt prepared because sometimes they’re a little nervous when they fly. We made the crate a mini-home; it had a little branching, so she could get comfortable like she’s in a tree. She also had her favorite food with her—eucalyptus.” what was the flight like? “It was an unusual experience, the most unusual so far in my animal career. People were curious: Is it a puppy? Is it a cat? We had the windows closed with shade cloth, but we did have her picture on top—some glamour shots. I was happy to talk with the passengers about why she’s going to Florida.”

how did katherine settle in at west palm beach? “I was a little nervous, you know, Will she like Florida? But she told me she does, very much so. When we arrived, we left her in the crate with access to her new home, so she could exit as she felt comfortable. Overnight, she managed to explore all the perching and the trees in her enclosure. She also ate a fair amount. I could not have been happier as her keeper.” what’s next for katherine? “She’ll be introduced to Oz, but right now she’s going through a 30-day quarantine. Then, the keepers will decide her next step. Hopefully there’s some good interaction between Katherine and Oz, and they can work it out from there.” is there anything else we should know? “Katherine has very fluffy, almost butterfly-like ears, and she has a spicy attitude. Koalas in general are threatened, so we have to make sure that we protect these guys. Our work in these zoos definitely helps ensure that there are more koalas for generations to come.” Southwest makes special exceptions to help transport pre-approved animals for zoos and animal rescue organizations. two motherless calves, he hoped to get her interested in ranching. She remained hesitant—until he took her to see them. One of the calves was calm and sedate. But the other, who’d soon be known as Rowdy Girl, was a live wire. “She was jumping up and down, prancing all around,” Renee says. “I started falling in love with this calf.” Soon, all Renee had to do was walk out the door and yell, “Roww-DEEEE!” and Rowdy Girl would come bouncing up, eager for her feeding. The more time Renee spent with the calves, the more she loved them. And before long, she discovered that the cows she’d once ignored had a strong community and different personalities. As she learned about each one, she found herself with them more and more. “I was naming them, I was watching them, I was following them,” she says. “The cows became my companions. They became my world.” Renee brought her yoga practice out to the pasture. She wrote country songs and serenaded the herd, strumming her black acoustic guitar. She stopped pining for the city as she sat in the shade of the trees, perfectly still, and waited for the cows to come to her. She noticed their individual details, learned their mannerisms. She was mesmerized by the strong bonds between mothers and calves. And then she learned about the red trailer.

“Just like I never used to see the cows, now all I could see were the cows,” Renee says.

TOMMY’S GREAT-GRANDFATHER was a cattle rancher who owned a slaughterhouse in Houston, and later, one in Alvin, about 30 miles south. Tommy still has his great-grandpa’s spurs, made from Mexican silver coins, and his heavy branding iron, which spells out the first three letters of their last name: “SON.” “Ranching culture is so strong, and there’s such loyalty,” Renee says. “There’s a need to carry on the tradition.” Tommy’s ranch was a cow-and-calf operation—he profited from selling his calves to the beef industry. When the calves were six to eight months old, they were baited into the red trailer and taken to the sale barn. Rowdy Girl could stay on the ranch as a breeding cow, but the rest of the calves had to go. Renee watched the mother cows chase the trailer, following the fence line as far as they could. As evening fell, she listened to the cows call for their calves. She paced the living room as Tommy watched TV. “Can’t you hear that?” she demanded. “They’re crying for their babies!” “You’re gonna have to get used to that,” he told her. Renee stomped outside, slamming the door. As the sun went down, she dropped to her knees and wept. Every six months, the red trailer would go to the sale barn, and every six months, Renee could barely contain her grief. “Renee, you eat steak. You love filet mignon,” Tommy would remind her. “Where do you think all that comes from?” True, she had a collection of leather boots and loved the rodeo. But this was different. These were her cows—her pets, her companions. The couple’s arguments intensified. “You don’t mind spending the money!” Tommy would say, dropping the itemized sales receipts on her desk and pointing out how much they’d made off each calf. Though she wanted to deny it, Renee knew Tommy was right. She felt like a co-conspirator, betraying the creatures who’d kept her company while she adjusted to life in the country. She thought, How can I be part of this? By the time the red trailer left for the

sale barn in February 2014, Tommy and Renee were fighting constantly. Six more months rolled by, and the couple was at another impasse. She wouldn’t let him take the calves to be sold, but he was about to retire and couldn’t afford to keep them. Renee loved Tommy, but now she loved the cows, too. Soon she was watching movies like Earthlings and Cowspiracy and reading books about plant-based eating. She went vegan in October 2014—pitting her values directly against Tommy’s heritage. She’d moved to the country for him, but she wouldn’t give in this time. One evening, Tommy and Renee stood by the red trailer, arguing. She called him a murderer, and he yelled back that she was ruining his business. Weeping, she threatened to follow the red trailer to the sale barn, to buy back every last calf with his credit card. Tommy knew he had to get out of the business or face another divorce. “I’m going to sell the whole herd,” he said, finally. “Well,” Renee said, “why don’t you sell them to me?” She asked Tommy how much he could get for the cows. Placating her, never believing she could get the money together, he offered to cut her a deal. “All right, Renee,” he said. “I’ll sell them to you for $30,000.” What he didn’t know was that Renee had an idea. She imagined transforming the ranch into a sanctuary, where livestock could be free to live in peace. “Just like I never used to see the cows, now all I could see were the cows,” Renee says. “They had a right to be here. And not only that, the ranch could be home to more.” Tommy said it couldn’t be done, but she’d been in touch with people at other no-kill sanctuaries. She talked to Kip Andersen, one of the filmmakers behind Cowspiracy, who suggested starting a fundraiser. She got advice from cattleman-turned-activist Howard Lyman, who helped Renee

F1_pets_DE.indd 68

remember that ranching was her husband’s culture and more than a black-and-white operation. In December 2014, Renee launched her blog, Vegan Journal of a Rancher’s Wife. The site became a platform for promoting her Indiegogo fundraiser, and she spent hours posting about it online, telling anyone who would listen. Animal lovers from all over the world caught wind of her story, and donations poured in. Her husband was slack-jawed. Oh, my God, he thought. She’s gonna do this. Tommy Sonnen is a man of his word. In February 2015, his ranch became Rowdy Girl Sanctuary, a nonprofit named in honor of the first calf Renee fell in love with. In under four months, Renee raised $36,337—enough to purchase Tommy’s herd. THE SUN IS about to go down, and the cows have finished their supper. Renee is sitting under a tree, perfectly still. Tommy watches as, one by one, four brown calves creep up to her. He asks if she’s ready to head back to the house, but she puts a finger to her lips. Renee has spent enough time among them to know that cows appreciate quiet. And sure enough, one of the calves lies down beside her.

9/6/17 1:20 PM

Another stretches out to sniff Renee’s face. Tommy smiles. Retirement isn’t quite what he imagined. He started metal detecting at 10 years old, and he thought he’d have more time for it now. But he spent today working on an expansion to the chicken coop. He’s had to dip into his 401(k) to care for the animals. The ranch flooded in 2016, and that set him back even further—it’s taken time and money to get things back in order. Against all odds, he’s also gone vegan. It’s for his health and the environment, he says, though Renee believes it has to do more with the cows than he’ll let on. He has his own Facebook page, where he posts videos of his favorites. One clip features Murray, a black steer, going face-first into a bale of hay, tossing it with his horns and hopping in excitement. There’s another of Charger, a fuzzy brown Charolais, licking Tommy with his long tongue. Marriage is a compromise,

Tommy says. This life is different than the one he expected. It has meant awkward talks with ranching buddies. It’s meant letting go of tradition. But in the end, he’s not sorry how things have turned out. Soon, he hopes, Renee will bring in enough donations that he’ll have time to go metal detecting again. Meanwhile, running a nonprofit sanctuary is a full-time gig. Renee needs $8,000 to $10,000 in monthly donations to keep the sanctuary afloat, which includes animal care and employee salaries. Though she’s raising money all the time, she advertises specific fundraising campaigns every four to six weeks. Her days are often full and busy. This morning, Renee aired a Facebook Live video where she read and discussed a book about vegan ethics. She helped train a new employee, a young woman hired to help with animal care (aside from Renee and Tommy, Rowdy Girl Sanctuary has two full-time employees). On a conference call with

her marketing team, she came up with a slogan for a new donation drive. She held chickens and talked to pigs. And now she’s out in the pasture with the two things she loves most: her husband and her animals. When they converted their ranch into Rowdy Girl Sanctuary, these cows didn’t just become pets, Renee explains. They became family. As Renee and Tommy get back in the Kawasaki, Rowdy Girl crowds alongside the couple as if to say goodnight. “Roww-DEEEE,” Renee calls, just like she used to when Rowdy Girl was a little calf waiting to be bottle-fed. The cow’s ears perk up, and Renee and Tommy laugh. Tara Nieuwesteeg is a book editor and freelance writer in Dallas. Email her at taranieuw@gmail.com.

I knew all of this, but I still begged anyway. When I watched Full House and Punky Brewster, I took away the notion that a dog was what made the modern American family complete and rooted, not in flux like mine. I begged enough that my parents, thinking they could get a much-needed sabbatical from hearing me talk about pets, bought me a plush toy dog, a tiny little thing with white fur, black beady eyes, and soft brown ears. It was a temporary fix, and when my mom, obsessed with keeping her house a bleached beacon of cleanliness, put the stuffed animal in the spin cycle and dryer to ensure that it, too, could not make our home dirty, my pursuit only became more relentless. This meant a childhood spent acquiring odd pets, like several species of lizards, tadpoles, and even a chicken I found, which I kept in the garage until my parents

forced me to give it away. When I finally plucked up the courage to bring a cat home, my mom took it back to the pet store while I was away on a trip. By the time my parents had almost lived an equal amount of time in both Iran and America, I graduated college. We were settled, and life was, for the first time in a while, not hectic. They decided I would finally be getting a real dog. We drove into

the California desert, to a small city called Hemet, and brought home a Maltese puppy who existed solely because his parents got out of their separate quarters when they weren’t supposed to. He gnawed at my fingers when I picked him up from the litter, and I knew immediately he was mine. I named him Henry. As my mom drove us back to Los Angeles, Henry wiggled all over the car. We were quiet, until I

asked her why she gave in. “I did this so that you could never say I didn’t,” she said. She didn’t want the guilt, or the dog, so she went about it in her own way, making sure he was as clean and unobtrusive as possible. He didn’t shed, was hypoallergenic and small. His presence didn’t have to be felt all the time, and she wouldn’t have to be reminded, at least not in theory, that she had done the thing that went against everything she knew was right. My parents expected that I would fall in love with him, but they never expected they would love him even more. These days, my mom cooks him gourmet Iranian-Armenian food. (His favorite is Cornish hen with saffron and green bell peppers, a dish only she knows how to make correctly.) My dad plays with him every night. When I moved out, I took him with me but would drop him off at their house every weekend as if he were part of some informal custody agreement. Like typical Middle Eastern parents who take the worship of their children to somewhat obsessive heights, they scoff at other people’s dogs in private. Henry is the cutest one of all, they say. Our dog is the best dog. Their acceptance of his presence in our lives is one way I’ve melded my multiple identities together. Those identities now exist side by side instead of being at odds with one another. Having a pet means being at peace; it means feeling grounded and secure. For immigrant and refugee families like mine who have witnessed war, violence, and other forms of instability, sometimes the simplest living embodiment of what contentment looks like is a 10-pound ball of white fur curled up on your lap. CAPILLUS: USE IT OR LOSE IT

IF HAIR LOSS RUNS IN YOUR FAMILY, CHANCES ARE YOU MIGHT NEED CAPILLUS. FOR USE BY MEN & WOMEN The physician-recommended cap that’s clinically proven to regrow hair discreetly under a hat is now available for men and women. No need to endure the embarrassment of astronaut-type helmets or Cinderella-style headband gadgets. Capillus laser therapy caps prevent progression of hair loss and regrow thinning hair in those with hereditary hair loss in a dignified manner. Manufactured in the USA, Capillus laser therapy is FDA-CLEARED and has no known adverse side-effects, so you can use it with confidence.† Nothing tops it for

convenience. Just wear for a few minutes and start seeing results within 4-6 months. Unlike laser comb type devices, Capillus lasers require no effort from the user making it a preferred choice of doctors worldwide.* Our Capillus laser caps start at a very affordable price of $799 for the Capillus82 – an incredible value for the amount of lasers (comb devices are priced as much as 4x the amount per laser) - and range up to our premier Capillus272Pro, the clinical strength device available through select hair restoration physicians.

Capillus laser therapy works through the process of photobiomodulation. Just like plants convert light energy to produce oxygen from carbon dioxide, cells on the scalp convert light energy from lasers into chemical energy to restore normal function in hair follicles. If caught on time, photobiomodulation can reverse the process of hair loss in people with androgenetic alopecia by restoring cellular function at the cellular level of the hair follicle, restoring the hair follicle. SOOTHE MENOPAUSE SYMPTOMS

Menopause may be a natural occurrence that comes with age, but illness, surgery, and even the treatment of some diseases can hasten its onset. Premature menopause can result in more severe symptoms and can increase some health risks. Nurturing good habits, like healthy eating, regular exercise, and relaxation techniques like yoga and meditation, help ease these symptoms. Herbal supplements can also aid in combatting the side effects of this natural process. Internal Harmony’s

menopause relief capsules are made from natural botanicals and are glutenand hormone-free. The dietary supplement can provide relief from hot flashes, night sweats, and irritability, as well as help individuals regain their libido. Enjoy the benefits of natural progesterone with Internal Harmony progesterone cream, made with wild yam, vitamins, herbs, and minerals. And Internal Harmony’s sleep aid restores restful nights with PharmaGABA®, passionflower, L-theanine, and herbal extracts.

Years ago I was losing my strength, endurance and drive. I couldn’t hike or run or bike with the verve that I used to. But even though I was never a pro athlete, I didn’t think I needed to see such drops in my performance. I felt ready to take a risk and go out on my own, build a strong team and do something for myself and my buddies.

Mdrive is a daily supplement for men looking to increase strength, stamina and overall vitality. Some call it vitality, others longevity or anti-aging; I call it “Men being Men.” Mdrive is a product guys can recommend to other guys because it performs. Now I’m proud to say guys have a tool to fight back against the aging process…perhaps slow it down?

EASE NERVE PAIN

When medication trials are no longer effective at controlling pain from trigeminal neuralgia—a chronic pain condition targeting a nerve in the face—patients can resort to surgery or choose radiosurgery. The Swedish Radiosurgery Center offers a precise form of radiation treatment that uses a Gamma Knife®. The radiosurgery treatment is an outpatient procedure lasting just one to two hours, and it offers a 70 percent success rate when it comes to completely or partially reducing pain. The only side effect risk from Gamma Knife is a less than 15 percent chance of some facial numbness on the same side as the condition. The center’s treating team has helped more than 500 people with trigeminal neuralgia over the past two decades, says radiation oncologist and executive director Dr. Sandra Vermeulen.

What began in 2010 as Mosquito Joe, a locally owned mosquito control business in Virginia Beach, Virginia, has become the foundation for Buzz Franchise Brands. Pool Scouts, a sister brand, was introduced in 2016, and in 2018, the company plans to add Home Clean Heroes, a professional home-cleaning service, to its franchise repertoire. Offering low investment and recurring revenue business models for franchisees, Buzz Franchise Brands is ideal for those new to the franchising industry who are seeking rapid growth without a steep buy-in.

At the forefront of innovation, The UPS Store continues to introduce alternative concepts to better serve customers, such as small-footprint stores inside larger retailers, locker services, and print delivery services. This allows flexibility for both customers and franchisees, adding value through convenience. “We continue to challenge ourselves to find new ways to innovate and evolve, delivering service and value to our customers,” Adkins says.

BECOME AN INDUSTRY LEADER

If you’re looking for a business model with a strong focus that doesn’t require weekend work, Kiddie Academy is a great option to explore. Kiddie Academy is a privately owned leader in the childcare industry, and, with more than 35 years of experience, the company has refined the vetting and discovery process. An organic growth strategy ensures it focuses on specific markets, while weekday work means franchisees can maintain a balance with their weekend schedules. “We continually invest in our programs and services to meet and exceed education standards and parent expectations,” says vice president of marketing Wendy Odell Magus. “This translates into a business that is not only financially fulfilling, but also provides the work-life harmony so many of our franchisees are seeking.”

Kiddie Academy

What we lacked in experience, we made up for with an entrepreneurial spirit to fulfill a growing need in our community.

Franchisees Meagan and Brian Van Dyck with their family

They did all their homework Meagan worked in human resources. Brian worked as an oil and gas drilling consultant overseeing drilling locations in Texas. Between the two of them, neither of the Van Dycks had a résumé of expertise in the field of educational child care. Nor did they have entrepreneurial experience running an independently owned and operated business. But what they lacked in experience, they made up for with a zealous spirit and in doing all their homework to fulfill a growing need in their community. With highlighters and post-it notes in hand, Meagan read the 222-page Texas state child care standards… four times. “I’m a rule follower,” said Meagan. “So I wanted to know the state regulations in our industry so we could exceed expectations. Some might be surprised to know we’re self-taught, but if you judged a book by its cover, you’d think we know exactly what we’re doing, because we do. Because we did all our homework, we have confidence parents are looking for.”

The couple researched seven different franchise concepts over six months before deciding to open a school with Kiddie Academy. Kiddie Academy is a professional, award-winning and accredited child care company, and the franchisor also met a personal standard: the organization aligned with Meagan and Brian’s values, ethics and commitment to their community. The Van Dyck’s chose to build their community in a “small, big town” near Texas A&M University at the Kiddie Academy of College Station. Meagan and Brian were aware of the challenges of venturing into an unknown-for-them industry, but knew they would succeed with the support of Kiddie Academy, their experienced and knowledgeable franchisor. Brian says parents often tell them, “this is where y’all belong.” Learn about Kiddie Academy at www.FranchiseKA.com or by calling 410-777-5352.

One Question

Stephen Moyer,

what do you remember about your first professional acting gig?

Stephen’s new show, The Gifted, premieres Oct. 2 on FOX.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY MAARTEN DE BOER/CONTRIBUTOR/GETTY IMAGES

I’d just left drama school and was cast as Noah Claypole in the musical Oliver! at Theatr Clwyd in Wales. The week I started rehearsing, the union called. They said I couldn’t use my real name, Stephen Emery, because someone with the same name had joined that same week and was already playing the back end of a pantomime horse—one of those horse costumes that has two people inside it—in a Christmas play in Brighton. I may have been able to get my name back later in life, but by then everyone already knew me as Stephen Moyer.
