METROGRAMMA

URALS LANDSCAPES IN PROGRESS

Metrogramma. Urals Landscapes in progress What does it mean for a foreign architect to come to an unknown land and offer, in just a few months, a sensible and necessary vision of its future development? How does one deal with nature in a virtually absolute form that has rendered the few human settlements a risible trace compared to the force of the landscape surrounding them? In recent years, most of the socalled ‘starchitects’ have dealt with the problem by giving shape to a self-referential and autonomous symbol that countered the apparent ‘emptiness’, building a landmark that was apparently able to resolve the situation through an act of force. An alternative to this logic is to construct a careful dialogue that is sensitive to the geography of the place and to nature itself. The landscape with its traces, its symbols laid down over millennia, its colours, hierarchies and volumes that vary over the seasons, becomes a reference point, the symbol the architect uses to construct a complex but necessary dialogue in order to give life to settlements and forms that will survive over time and have a fundamental logic. The work of the Metrogramma studio in the Olbast area in the East of the Russian Confederation is based on this architectural and cultural approach. It is previewed in Spazio FMG per l’architettura and describes the premises and visions of an extremely interesting architectural and human adventure in which this studio from Milan has been invol-

ved for the last five years. The concept plan for the city of Chelyabinsk and the MIASS Sunny Valley, the project for a pilot service station along the Transiberian motorway and initial projects for Sunny Valley itself, are at the centre of the exhibition. But what is most striking is Metrogramma’s general approach, which is perfectly coherent with studies carried out in the late ‘90s for the suburbs of Bolzano and with the territorial zoning plan project for the Municipality of Milan of recent years. It is a choice that considers the geography of a place and leaves architecture in the background for a moment, while waiting to draw up a sustainable overall framework that is sensitive to the landscape we will inhabit.
