The Frequency of Balance Metamorphosis (You Say You Want a Revolution?) Most of us are familiar with the phoenix legend—the bird that lives out it’s long life, bursts into flame and is reborn from the ashes. Is this a little dramatic for what is happening in the world right now? I don’t think so. We are living in dramatic times and we have choices to make. We can continue doing things as we have always done, or we can take opportunities to burn the bits that aren’t working and start again. This is what I am attempting to do by launching GEMS College of Energy Medicine. Just because we have always done something in a certain way is no reason to continue! Will this transformation be difficult? Possibly, but the hope is that we emerge more beautiful and resilient than before, ready for whatever is coming next. One area that I feel needs to be focused on is reaching out to younger people. This needs to happen on two levels; one is simply to bring tools of self care and balance to a group that is struggling right now and desperately needs some help. The second is to make younger people aware of this as a career, bringing a fresh perspective to muscle testing classes and client work. My kids are leading the charge with an event at the end of January aimed at those aged 14-24. Read more further on. I hope the articles you find in this issue offer inspiration and joy for change and clarity in the New Year! Thanks for reading, we’re all in this together!

Embracing Change with Candace Chisholm By Alexis Costello
I
n 2019 shortly after the death of her father, Candace’s 18-month-old granddaughter was diagnosed with a malignant sacrococcygeal germ cell tumor. Dropping everything, the family moved to Vancouver to work alongside conventional medicine approaches and integrate it with muscle testing and nutrition. Click here to watch the entire interview on YouTube.
A: So, full disclosure, this is a little bit different than the kind of interview I usually do for the magazine because Candace is my aunt, so this is family! She is my mom’s sister, and part of that legacy of muscle testing work that you may have heard me speak about before. While we have never worked directly together in the health field, we have been running parallel tracks, so I am happy to have time to talk today about a new project. You and your husband Mike are co-authors of a new book: She Changed Me; One Ordeal Two Perspectives. Tell us a little bit about Elara and what inspired this story? C: My granddaughter Elara, is currently three and a half, she’s my oldest son’s daughter, and she’s this bright light. . I always thought that being a mom was just the bomb but being a grandparent – there’s nothing like it! KinesioGeek Magazine, www.gemskinesiologycollege.com 6

She’s an incredible little girl and she came into the world despite a few obstacles. And we were just kind of plugging along as grandparents learning the ropes. She was a big part of our lives right away, she would come and stay overnight, right from a baby once a week and we really bonded with her.
I found the lump on December 21st, we went down to Emergency to get it checked out. On the 23rd we were in for a CAT scan, on the 24th for an MRI, they discovered a tumour and we were at Children’s Hospital (in Vancouver) by Boxing Day. It was so fast – I don’t think I even breathed for about four days.
Fast forward to the end of 2019, we were going through a lot of stuff with the family, my father was really sick. He passed away, and I remember thinking that it had been a struggle for the past year, that maybe it was time now to decompress. I helped my mom move into my brother’s house, and we were just taking some time, so we had Elara a lot. One day we took her out for a walk around the block in the snow and we got home, and she just wasn’t acting right. I muscle test her all the time, I knew intuitively that something wasn’t right, but I couldn’t put my finger on it. I put her in the bathtub and noticed there was this small lump on her lower back. We get those feelings sometimes, and I always say to people to act on those when we get them. We have this incredible innate gift in all of us of intuition.
They determined she had what’s called a yokesack tumour and she went into surgery on New Year’s Eve. It was about the size of my fist and sitting on her tailbone. They were able to get about 98% of the tumour, but then they sat us down on January 5th and said that they believed it was malignant and they wanted to start treatment. When we went down to Vancouver, we thought we were going for a couple weeks. I had been in touch with you and with my sister, and I’m so grateful for the strength of my community. That feeling of, ‘it will be ok, we’ll get through this.’ But we ended up staying for 5 months to support our kids. (Click here to see their video)

Time for Change That’s really what inspired us to write. It wasn’t so much the journey of the cancer to be honest; many people go through that journey. It was the journey of something so life-changing for us and how we were able to navigate it and take the time to see and receive the blessing. The lessons that came from that were so phenomenal that I couldn’t help but put them into print. For myself, and for a love-letter to Elara. And then I thought, for someone going through any ordeal, not just cancer, but Covid, divorce, death… this is about recognizing that things happen and what blessings we can take from that.

Partial proceeds from the sale of She Changed Me will go to the Michael Cuccione Foundation, an amazing organization that touched the lives of Mike and Candace during their ordeal, and has saved countless lives through their research and collaborations over the last 25 years. A: Can we talk a little bit about your background in the holistic health world and how you we able to use that in an integrated way with the allopathic treatment in order to support Elara, exactly the way that she needed? C: My mom was fortunate enough years and years ago to work with a chiropractor who had started down the path of Touch for Health. So I grew up with this; I think I was 5 or 6 years old when she started muscle testing. When I got married and had kids of my own, I remember thinking that I wanted to explore this more, even just for my own family (like I should stop having my mom take care of me!) In the late 90’s I took my TFH training, and it ended up just morphing into a practice for me because I love and believe in it so much. And I have seen so much evidence of how this work can enhance quality of life for the people I love. (Here we discuss my grandfather, her dad, and the way we all as a family kept him going for years after 9 heart attacks, 2 strokes, a quadruple bypass and being septic, to the amazement of the hospital staff and doctors! Right up until the last year he was extremely efficient and had good quality of life.)
KinesioGeek Magazine, www.gemskinesiologycollege.com 8
Time for Change This is the love that has been the foundation of my practice for 23 years. The path that I have always taken has focused on nutrition, I love food as medicine – I think there’s just so much to learn when it comes to food. How and when we eat is important when it comes to healing certain parts of us. Elara has grown up with this too, so she is used to certain things, and I give credit to her mom Jessica, because, from early on, she was really open to us taking Elara on this path of natural health. She would give her buckwheat water or tea in a little syringe (into her mouth) right from when she was little in order to get the right nutrition into her. So Elara already knew that this made her feel better. And this saved us because she didn’t have many teeth at 18 months; it’s not like we could get her to eat brasil nuts! When we were in the hospital that was my job; for 4.5 months, I would muscle test her, do whatever I could to balance her, and then would start the process of making teas or concoctions so that we could get the right nutrition into her. A lot of what we were doing centered around building blood because, as you know, chemo destroys it and brings your hemoglobin levels down to practically nothing, so that’s what we were focusing on all the time. Eventually I figured we could make a business out of selling these little shots of veggies and herbs and call it “Finding Hemo!” The greatest thing about that was we were working with Western medicine and doing it sideby-side - there is nothing more satisfying than watching the change in their numbers in real-time, and that’s what I got to see. I can’t even tell you the blessing and the confidence you get from that. Because I went to her oncologist, who was an incredible woman (I don’t get intimidated often, but she was just amazing!) and I sat down with her and said, ‘look, this is what I do for a living,’ and she said, ‘ok, we’ll do this together; you don’t keep anything from me, and I won’t keep anything from you.’
Issue 22, Fall 2022
“And so I told her every time, what we were working on, and what she kept saying to me was, ‘it’s working, keep going; it’s working, keep going.’
And so I told her every time, what we were working on, and what she kept saying to me was, ‘it’s working, keep going; it’s working, keep going.’ We did bone broths and marine phytoplankton and everything. And Elara’s numbers were extraordinary, especially in comparison with some of the other kids that had similar cancers. There were some kids there that had to have 30 blood transfusions in the same time that Elara had none. That was one of those moments when I could see it in real time. And there was nothing that felt better. A: I really wanted to be able to share this bit with people because I think that sometimes, both in the allopathic and the alternative medicine systems, we kind of get stuck in this idea that we are enemies. Like, if you are into alternative health, you wouldn’t touch conventional medicine with a 10-foot pole; and if you’re over here with the doctors, you aren’t interested in the quacks on the other side! And to have such a gorgeous example of you and this other woman with all of her training being able to work together for the best interests of this little girl, is really amazing. C: I think that’s the key point – it was for the best interests of this baby. I’m a huge fan of collaboration, I think that it takes all hands-on
KinesioGeek Magazine, www.gemskinesiologycollege.com 9
Time for Change deck! It’s not just one modality, one therapy one medicine, we are complicated machines, so in my opinion, why not throw everything you can at it? We can’t survive without conventional medicine – it’s emergency medicine. If you break your bone, you need to have that bone set. But the prevention side… our healthcare systems has shown the fissures and strain and stress more than ever before in the past two years. People are starting to think, wait, we can’t just park our boat over here in this dock, we need to look at the whole marina now. So the oncologist was open to collaboration and I am grateful for that. And we joked about it; I said, ‘when come back with this baby in a year for you to check on her, I want to see buckwheat hanging in all of the IV bags on these poles!’ And she said, ‘Maybe that’ll happen.’ The kids were staying at Ronald McDonald House, and a lot of the time I would make the bone broth or the tea there and we were able to help educate people there too, because you find out really fast that there’s a massive lack of education when it comes to nutrition. When we sat down and talked to Elara’s team, one of my first questions was, ‘what shouldn’t she eat?’ And they said, ‘Nothing, she can eat
Issue 22, Fall 2022 everything,’ and I was like, ‘No she can’t! She can’t have sugar, are you crazy?!’ A: I’ve spoken with parents before when they have been through this, and they have been told that their child is probably going to lose weight with the treatment, so to fill them up with all of the carbs / ice cream / sugar they want in order to keep their weight up, without acknowledging that those are immunosuppressants. C: It was shocking to see it because again, growing up in this world we’re not really used to that… There were a couple of times when my husband Mike was like, ‘You should take a walk,’ as I freaked out that the kids were being fed Wheaties and Kraft Dinner – I just wanted to help so bad! A woman told me that one day her daughter had 17 chocolate bars because that’s all she would eat. And that’s not their fault – that’s the system’s fault. It’s disheartening, but also, we know that we can flip the script. Elara had no sugar, but she never lost an ounce; in fact by her third chemotherapy treatment, she was gaining weight. She had her IV with four different medications going into her arm and she

Time for Change would be asking to go for a walk. One day we did 1800 steps with her pole. She was a machine! And she would follow her own intuition of what her body needed. It was fascinating to watch. A: What change are you hoping to inspire with your words? C: Change is inevitable. My hope is that people realize that even though change feels scary there can be a reason for it. I started in 2018 to go down a path to incite change (I really love change to be honest!). I started a company called He Changed It, followed by, She Changed It, and I built a mobile app for men’s mental health and wellness, and we are releasing the women’s one in the spring (because the perspectives are so different).
Issue 22, Fall 2022 And start-up technology, as this is not my background… was not the easiest path! But I feel like I have so much to share when it comes to health, and we started with men because men’s mental health and wellness are so under resourced as we have generations of imprinting: ‘just suck it up.’ We wrote this book as I was right in the middle of creating this start up and there were days that I though, ‘I don’t know if I can do this.’ And then I look at this baby who is literally fighting for her life and what she taught me was that there is no other moment then right here, right now. She had zero baggage. We came with baggage and attachments and what ifs? And that’s what I want to change. It is so easy for us to get caught up in the future
and let go of stories that keep circulating and coming back. And it’s like the trail – I’m not looking for a finish line. This process really opened my heart and opened me up to receive. It’s funny, but I sometimes see people as trees. Going through life, humans can trigger you, it’s hard to live in society sometimes! And we can judge people a lot and we judge ourselves and it can turn into this terrible spiral. When I’m out there in nature, I can let go of these stories and reexperience life for what it is right now. It lets me love the parts of myself that are harder to love and that I want to hide. There are dark moments and shadows that you have to work through. Your mind telling you that you’re worthy and not good enough (at least for me, KinesioGeek Magazine, www.gemskinesiologycollege.com 11

or stuck in the past and that doesn’t serve us. Elara just stayed in the moment and was happy in the moment and that’s how she healed. When you are going through something like this, can you be kind to yourself and honest with yourself and stay in this moment? For the rest of our conversation from here, (including an acknowledgement of the guilt we can feel as practitioners when we don’t see something sooner), visit the interview on YouTube and watch the last 14 minutes. Candace has long worked in the health and wellness industry by way of a business in coaching through physical and mental wellbeing with a primary focus in muscle testing and biofeedback. Starting in 1999, before the onslaught of the internet, she saw a definite need to take a proactive approach to mental health, feeling like the burden on the health industry would only get greater. In 2014, the opportunity presented itself to further fulfill the desire to help, change and develop people, by way of a brand new grassroots NGO. This organization focused on the mental and physical health of mothers, thus creating systematic programs to help shift mindsets, thereby shifting futures for those otherwise disenfranchised. After helping to grow the charity to 55,000 members nationwide, she exited in 2018, and immediately used that startup mentality to create He Changed It and She

Are you speaking their language?
By Michelle Greenwell As we look at the kinds of students that are now studying health and wellness disciplines, it is time to consider if we are meeting their needs.
S
tudents in high school and middle school are learning about mental health and resources through computer programs designed to help them find government sourced resources and information. Such programs as ChatterHigh.com are assisting students in learning how to navigate online research to find resources so that they know how to find support in their early adult years.
Young adults will use social media and apps about health and wellness to gain the most current research and ideas that are available. They are no longer purchasing books and building a library, and they are looking for instant information that can be applied on-demand. They are also taking college and university courses that lead them through specific targeted topics found in psychology, social work, neurobiology, neuroimmunology, kinesiology (the study of movement), physiology. Middle aged adults are relying on resources that they have been familiar with from the early years.
KinesioGeek Magazine, www.gemskinesiologycollege.com 13
Time for Change They will search the internet for assistance and use social media groups to find support for their areas of interest. Their ideas of self-care continue to be related to feel good activities like taking a bath, having a weekend away, paint nights, yoga class, walking. As we consider the field of bioenergetic wellness or specialized kinesiology moving forward, how are we creating a platform that is accessible to these generations? Are we keeping up with the development of our workshops, courses, and post-secondary degrees? Are we easily found in research on the internet? Are we accessible for quick referencing and use? With the restrictions of the pandemic, we were forced into an online platform. For those of us offering instruction in distance healing, this was an easy and powerful transition for teaching and offering sessions. In fact, many of us discovered that the concepts of distance healing, instantaneous change over distance, and awareness of energy were heightened using Zoom to provide classes online. For those who held on to the belief that we were a hands-on clinician only, employment became a challenge. What is the difference in these two viewpoints? Intention and clinician vs facilitator. How has this helped or hampered accessibility to our work? Moving forward we know that the world is looking for self-care information. People are looking to be empowered by their own actions and accountable for their wellness. They want the information to be readily available on their phone, and they want to know that the tools are based in science. How are we meeting these needs? How are we changing the way we deliver our techniques and protocols?
Issue 22, Fall 2022
How are we meeting these needs? How are we changing the way we deliver our techniques and protocols?
Are we creating apps? Are we making advocacy and outreach a priority for people to know we are available, accessible, and imperative for a self-care and wellbeing plan? Over the last year a team at CanBeWell, (The Canadian Association of BioEnergetic Wellness) came together to address these issues. They created a FREE pdf for the public to have direct access, and they kept the tools as simple as possible from many different disciplines like Touch for Health, Brain Gym, Natural BioEnergetics, Therapeutic Touch, and counselling. This provided a tool that was accessible on a phone. They also created a deck of cards that created a game for families to use. Others have created similar tools over the years. What they noticed is that people needed simple and experiential to be engaged. Even though tools were accessible and easy, they were too nervous to use them and unable to trust they could be successful. The idea that someone with a physician’s degree is necessary for self-care continued to prevail. Self-empowerment is not part of their dialogue. With this knowledge, how does our profession go forward and thrive? What approach do we take to raise awareness, to empower people, to develop an interest in knowing more about bioenergetic wellness or specialized kinesiology? How do we educate and train our younger generation? What are

they expecting of us? Can we deliver? These are important ideas that need to be explored on a global level. Until we address and create a platform for our profession, we will be unable to really reach the younger generation and the children and families needing our services. Where do you become a part of these conversations? IASK is holding gatherings once a month with a coffee chat with less than a dozen people from around the world coming together. Could you prioritize this? Knowlative built a platform that has an app and creates conversations bi-monthly with less than a dozen people from around the world coming together. Could you prioritize this?
Issue 22, Fall 2022 How are you changing our approach to be diverse, inclusive, and equitable? We are at a critical point in a post-pandemic, aging population using bioenergetic wellness or specialized kinesiology tools. To thrive in the next decade, we need to all be taking an active and comprehensive approach to making sure that our tools will continue. How will you use 2022 to advocate for our profession? How will you be a part of the action for 2022 to be accessible to all? (cont.)
Knowlative has offered three learning opportunities for 2022. The first is a Summit just for youth in their teens and early 20’s. Who do we know that we could send to this special event, and how can we entice them to participate? CanBeWell has partnered with Knowlative to share a plethora of tools from many different disciplines to provide a way for specialized kinesiologists to know more about topics that might not be a part of their regular course materials. With specific targeted collaborative gatherings through their summit, they are targeting these tough questions and looking for targeted action to help transform the profession. Thirdly, Knowlative’s annual event is designed to share the latest developments happening by creative course writers around the world. Have you put these progressive opportunities on your priority list as an advocate? As you consider your role in the longevity of our profession, what action plan do you have in place to change the way you reach youth? KinesioGeek Magazine, www.gemskinesiologycollege.com 15

Michelle Greenwell had never considered that she would want to go back Modalit to school and pursue a post-secondary education. With a BA in Psychology she felt that she wanted to be outside of the medical model for selfcare. In 2013 she was intrigued by a posting by Akamai University that credit could be given for those people with skills in Touch for Health, Brain Gym, MNRI and more. She never considered a degree. Since embarking on a post graduate diploma in Energy Dynamics, and then a MSc in CAM (Complementary and Alternative Medicine), she is now working on a doctorate in Integrative Health. Her understanding of the science and power of energy medicine has put her forefront with organizations wanting to integrate CAM (Complementary and Alternative Medicine) with their programs. Now working with the Choose Love Movement as a Program and Curriculum Developer, she is able to meld tools from her bioenergetic wellness toolbox with social and emotional learning programs for schools and educators. “My understanding of research, science, and program development was all expanded and energized through my participation in a graduate program at Akamai University. We need more people pursuing this level of education to find ways to reach our youth and to support families. Post-traumatic care needs us and our tools, and post-pandemic crisis along with global weather catastrophe’s also need our support. I am grateful for the opportunity to be stretched in my perspectives and invited to bigger global discussions. Be the change you wish to see!”

WHAT HAPPENS in times of choice - no choice?

ith recent months of lifestyle change, global change, human judgement booming voices of authority, limited scientific knowledge, political and health systems overwhelmed.

What has happened is… the inner connection for some people has become dimmed, caught up in other people’s agenda and expectations, to the point of being so disorientated that many have stopped or severed the connection, friendships, communities and, their own inner power. Time for Change Recent months it’s been too much of “you listen and agree with my belief or leave my camp.” Build the relationship, build trust and when appropriate your friend will ask your thoughts on world events. When life confusion happens, and routines are disrupted we can become disorientated and feel disconnected with who we really are. It can happen during isolation, desolation, separation, estrangement; it’s called life change, a time when many get stuck in a pattern of detrimental self-talk, exaggerated drive to heal the world, rather than support people through their personal walk, through this dilemma. The inner voice can be constantly talking, disparaging, discouraging, clouding over the splendid truth of who you truly are.

Resolutions and Goal Setting with Metaphors
By Sandra Toms
I
n Specialized Kinesiology, we have a world of information at our fingertips. It’s always amazing what muscle responses and reflex corrections can do. Through muscles and movement we reduce stress, change energy, sedate, stabilize, and get information from the tiniest things. It’s astounding what a trace, flush, massage, tap, hold, or squeeze can do.
When we create a strong goal, clear intention ensures success. Wishy washy nebulous instructions result in, well, wishy washy nebulous results. But clear, positive, active and focused goals are rewarded with an outpouring of life force into the system that previously struggled to achieve. That is because the muscle movement directly interfaces with the brain and triggers the body to ‘make it real’ and ‘bring it down’. As the physical body ‘feels’ the muscle contracting or extending, sensory neurons fire and the motor cortex is stimulated. A cause-effect linear action takes place as the system responds. But it is the Metaphor which takes us a step higher and links us to our highest human attribute – the spiritual essence of creativity. Using metaphors we become co-creators of our life thru movement. Time for Change To bring anything into this 3D dimension you need three things. First you need a thought, then you need a plan, and you need some kind of action. Look around! Everything you see started as a thought. That computer screen you are looking at – someone thought it up. That chair you are sitting on – yep someone thought it up too. And that trash can under your desk – simple as it may be – started as an idea. But the thought was not complete without a plan, a blueprint, technical designs, or even a pencil sketch on a napkin (which often utilized fine motor dexterity of the hand). In the end, it was the movement, the applied kinetic energy that brought that idea into 3
Issue 22, Fall 2022 dimensional reality. I’m serious. Look at that bookshelf in your office. But the thought was not complete without a plan, a blueprint, technical designs, or even a pencil sketch on a napkin (which often utilized fine motor dexterity of the hand). That desk lamp. That light bulb? Yep, idea, sketch, melting, molding, forming, hammering, soldered, twisting, assembling, packaging – all movement, all energy. Even the delivery required some thought, a route, and motion to get the finished product into your hands. Movement matters. Metaphors matter too. In fact, it’s been my observation that those who achieve peak performance always activate these three keys. 1. Thought – That’s a great idea. 2. PlanWhat steps do I need to get there? 3 Action – What movement will be required to achieve?

If you never have taken a Touch for Health Metaphor class you are missing out on one very practical, applicable technique. In the Touch for Health program we learn to position and move 14, 28 or 42 muscles, but in Metaphors we discover what they mean. The meaning you place on movement means a lot. In fact, meaning is everything. Think about this: What is your intention? What is your goal? Why are you doing crunches? Is it to strengthen your weakness? Or is it so you, through your abdominals, can absorb, assimilate, and choose wisely? Maybe it means “Sit up and engage!”
Issue 22, Fall 2022 won’t matter if that last meal isn’t digested or that gash on your arm gets infected. It doesn’t matter because if you don’t get away from that tiger, you’re dead. But we aren’t running from tigers these days. The perceived danger is from each other and from strands of DNA. Unfortunately, stress is still the same. Arguably more insidious because a tiger chase is short lived… you either get eaten or you get away.
Why are you running? Is it to get away from something? Or are you running toward your dream? They seem like such simple questions. But everything you do creates instruction to where you want to be. Once that is clear, every cell of your body will align. And when you move muscles, the intention becomes permanently embedded in your tissues. Metaphor activates creativity and engagement like nothing else. Instead of just moving a muscle, you are communicating, interacting, engaging! Your Right Brain lights up as you control, create and chose how you will respond to a challenge – You take control of circumstances instead of circumstances taking control of you. Under stressful conditions survival systems are prioritized. Energy goes to muscles, vision, hearing, smelling, arms and legs. While digestion slows, immune response recedes. If you are running from a tiger, it
KinesioGeek Magazine, www.gemskinesiologycollege.com 22
Time for Change What’s really cool about using Metaphor especially in a state of stress - is that you can use the body’s energy prioritization in a very proactive way. With extra energy and blood flow going to muscles you can take charge of a situation while honoring the body’s natural stress response. Metaphor allows you to be creative when stress tries to take that away. To be told, “Just relax,” doesn’t cut it anymore. Relaxation comes from a part of the brain, which may not be accessible. And lets be realistic, ESR is a great technique, but there are only so many days and nights you can sit with fingertips on ESR points before you gotta to get up and move. Metaphor allows you to move intentionally, with purpose, and in a way that releases stress as you create and activate the world you want to live in. It’s brilliant. It follows the 1-2-3 of bringing thought into reality. And the best part is: It’s easy! Identify the problem, create a solution, move muscles to make it real.

Peak performance is not mind over matter. It’s mind making matter. Mind knowing what matters. Peak performance enhances a commitment to engage as you become passionate about living well. Those who succeed recognize the incredible power of the mind and they use their whole mind-body integration to make anything real. 1. Right brain = the creative idea. 2. Left brain = the design and plan, 3. Body the muscle that makes it real. Metaphor makes it real and balances the body stressors, activates creativity, and brings dreams into reality.

Navigating branching pathways of inquiry in clinical kinesiology sessions By Bruce Dickson
I
like to start all of my kinesiology sessions and public presentations with an intention for psychic and spiritual protection. In case this tunes you up, have a listen: Father-Mother-God, we ask for the presence of the Whole Spirit,
the Highest God and the Greatest Loving as individually determined by each person here. We ask a Heartfelt Spirit to fill, surround, protect and guide us for the highest good of all concerned. For all of this, we are grateful.

Issue 22, Fall 2022
I like to start by listening to the client's complaint or concern. Then: according to a spoken a prayer, such as the one above, I act as if the client's own Higher Guidance - the highest Being available for this person at this time - is in charge of this present session. All I have to do is be the "delivery boy." I can simply find and follow valid Therapeutic Direction, at any moment where I have questions or we have lost this "thread." Usually, the client offers a presenting complaint. What does this trigger in the practitioner? The more K-training you have had, the more categories of existing unresolved disturbances you know, possible to check for; and, attempt correction on. See if you like this scheme of branching pathways for causative factor categories: Most tangible level of disturbance to identify: The question to ask here is, "Is the primary causative factor of the complaint a physical STRUCTURAL MISALIGNMENT?" Refer them out to a bodyworker, chiro or osteo if bone and organ misalignments are not your forte. Next less tangible level of disturbance to identify: "Is the primary causative disturbance BIOCHEMICAL, either LACK of beneficial nutrients; or, EXCESS of detrimental toxin(s)?" Next less tangible level of disturbances to identify: "Is the primary causative disturbance a MERIDIAN OR FIVE-ELEMENTAL under-CHARGE OR OVERCHARGE?"
Least tangible level of disturbance to identify: "Is the primary causative disturbance MENTALEMOTIONAL-UNCONSCIOUS factors; which are, burdening physical organs and systems?" The above four branching pathways cover a very
large fraction of all possible causative disturbances for this client, for his/her complaint. Additional connections exist between these four branching pathways. 1) Each successive level typically, for most practitioners, requires more training. Most of us naturally started with learning anatomy and physiology. We have those textbooks. Typically, later, we got more deeply into biochemical issues. We may even have test vials of substances from the 1990s. The biochemical approach was more efficient and elegant for some cases than a strictly structural misalignment approach. Later still - speaking typically - we learned in some cases, a meridian-five-element approach was more efficacious than the biochemical or structural approaches.
KinesioGeek Magazine, www.gemskinesiologycollege.com 27
Time for Change Later still, some of us learned in some cases, a mental-emotional-unconscious disturbance is at the root of the client's complaint. In these cases where this is the priority, for this client, then this is more efficacious than approach 1, 2 or 3. 2) Each successive level of the above four branching pathways typically, for most practitioners, requires more clinical and life experience than the one before it. Readers of this who are K-practitioners will know of; or be themselves, good examples of practitioners who started practice with level 1, 2 or 3 and who, later in life, evolved one or more steps further in this treatment mode progression. 3) Given the above correlations, the above MAY be a workable K-training sequence; or K-curriculum outline for CEUs. Why?

Youth Holistic Health Summit
Issue 22, Fall 2022

ow, more than ever, young people are taking charge of our own health, education, and careers, searching for a clear understanding of ourselves and our impact. While there are a thousand different ways to do this, Muscle Response Testing (MRT)/Specialized Kinesiology (SK) is an untapped and versatile one.
Maybe this is the first time you’ve heard of Muscle Response Testing, but you’re studying to be a chiropractor or acupuncturist, nutritionist or physical therapist. Maybe you’re just interested in human anatomy and emotions, or are studying a different aspect of health. Perhaps you have heard of Specialized Kinesiology before — you’ve had a session with a practitioner or have even taken a course. Whatever the case, this event is organized and run by young SK instructors for anyone aged 14-24 who is interested in gaining some insight into their own health, helping others, or pursuing a career in natural wellness.

A NEW KIND OF CONFERENCE The Specialized Kinesiology community has held innumerable conferences worldwide for practitioners and instructors over the past 50 years, but these all assume you have a certain amount of knowledge and experience coming in. This year we wanted to do something a little different and include — no, encourage — the people who need these tools most and who are the future of the industry, to attend. We’ve also changed up the format to make it more engaging. Presentations are a little shorter, breaks are more fun and, for the first time, the young people in the field are the stars of the show. We aim to achieve this through two days of virtual presentations, panel discussions, activities, and breakouts with some of the inspiring youth of the SK world, and our handpicked mentors to offer techniques, advice, and a sense of community.
A NEW KIND OF PROGRAM In 2022 we are launching GEMS College of Energy Medicine. One of the features of the school is the inclusion of Element Pathways to help people find which classes they want, create community, and give them a mentor to touch base with as they progress. Along with the Elements, we have created a Youth Program.
The Youth Program is specially designed for students who are looking for tools to assist in self care and to make learning easier. These classes can help with emotional regulation and stress release.
Issue 22, Fall 2022
This path can also set the foundation for a career in the holistic health field; offering training as a practitioner and/or instructor of basic muscle response testing techniques. The Summit and the Youth Program are created and facilitated by a team of young adults who have been successfully using these tools for years. These are tools that have made our lives easier and we are turning those skills into new careers. We want to be able to share these concepts and skills with our peers. We are offering Touch for Health, TFH Goal Setting and Metaphors and GEMS Flow classes aimed specifically at a younger audience. I hope this helps students feel more confident in class so their needs can be met. Please join us this month for our Grand Opening and for the Youth Holistic Health Summit!

Be Rebellious, Choose Whole Food!
By Lisa Kilgour
O
ne of the most common questions I get asked is, “what should my macros be?”.
Or a variation of that, like “how much protein should I eat?”, or “can I eat carbs?”.
Today, I want to tell you why you can ignore macros completely. Yes. Completely. Why? Because it’s a form of nutritionism and is backed by political will instead of good-quality nutritional advice. Nutritionism is a term to describe how we look at food today. Instead of talking about actual food, nutritionism is a belief that food is simply a sum of its abstract parts, like carbs, fat, protein, minerals, etc. Nutritionism seems modern and scientific…but it’s actually a bit sinister.
By talking about abstract parts of food that are impossible to see or measure at home, you have to look outside of yourself for nutrition advice. Before nutritionism, we ate whole food, prepared in ways that were taught to us by our ancestors. Inside nutritionism, we need to look to health experts for advice, and sadly, many of our health “experts” end up being food manufacturers and advertisers telling us what to eat. KinesioGeek Magazine, www.gemskinesiologycollege.com 31
Time for Change Let me tell you a story about the moment in time that changed the way food recommendations are made. In the mid-1970s the U.S. Senate wanted to investigate the role food plays in chronic illnesses like heart disease and cancer. They put together a committee that was headed by Senator George McGovern and filled with many lawyers and journalists (scientists and doctors were surprisingly missing in this committee). They spent a few days listening to testimony and in 1977 they released their first recommendations; “Eat less meat and dairy”. It was specific, direct, and easy to follow. And sadly, this was the last time a government agency told us to eat less of any certain food. Why? Politics. Specifically, Lobbyists. Unsurprisingly, the beef and dairy lobby didn’t like these recommendations one bit. This mattered because they’re VERY powerful. They flexed their political muscle and quickly that simple and direct recommendation was retracted and replaced with, “Eat more meat, poultry, and fish that’s low in saturated fat”. No more “eat less”. No more specific food recommendations. Now we had to turn to our nutritional experts to find out where this evil saturated fat was lurking. Since most of us don’t have a nutritionist on speed-dial, food manufacturers were happy to jump in. They refined and processed the heck out of oils, dairy, and other food to remove the saturated fat. Food labels everywhere were being redesigned so we all knew what foods had 0% saturated fat. The sugar lobby loved this as well! Out came the fat, in came lots of sugar to make the food more
Issue 22, Fall 2022 palatable. We now know that saturated fat poses no risk for heart disease. None. Major cohort studies, following 100,000+ people, found no correlation. But, the story isn’t over yet for Senator McGovern. The beef lobby wanted to make sure that Senator McGovern paid a big price for making the public question their beef consumption. The next time he was up for election the beef lobby gave tons of money to his competitor and they easily ousted this 3term Senator. The beef lobby sent a very clear message to all politicians – don’t mess with food lobbies. (Oprah also learned that hard lesson as well) The good news is this – WE can ignore the food lobbies. Together we have even more power when we choose where our money goes. Every time we buy whole food and ignore nutritionism is an act of rebellion against food lobbies and this type of political pull (and gives money to our amazing farmers). I love this - eating whole food as an act of rebellion. Doesn’t that feel amazing! (my inner teenager loves rebelling). Choose whole food, use your body as a guide, and rebel against politically motivated food advice.
Your body will thank you (and so will your local farmers <3) Visit Lisa’s website to find out more!
