Letter From the Editor Dear Readers, Here we are again, folks! I am glad that you are taking the time to read our class online publication. Every student in my class contributed to this magazine in some way whether that be creating a page, designing a cover or formatting its contents. I am sure that all my students will appreciate that you have taken some time to check out their work! The overarching theme with this publication is the hero. This was a culminating project for our unit on Gilgamesh and ancient hero epics. Throughout this unit students were tasked with examining the heroic traits and hero’s journey of Gilgamesh and reflect on how these archetypes inspired our modern conception of a superhero. Additionally, students were tasked with researching some basic information about an assigned superhero and creating a page for this magazine that would allow them to make a connection between their assigned superhero and the heroic traits they may have. Students had to research the origin story, key story arcs and heroic traits for each superhero. After completing those sections, they had to reflect on why their hero was interesting and how it may connect thematically to the real world. Ultimately, the magazine came together nicely with students designing pages on every hero from Spider-Man (one of my favorites growing up) to the X-Men and Daredevil. Overall, we all hope you enjoy reading through our magazine and learning a thing or two about some of Marvel’s Superheroes. Now that superheroes have entered into mainstream popular culture, more people than ever are seeing how relatable these characters can be and how through these heroes, modern issues prevalent in our world can be explored, discussed and made relevant for this generation and onward. Plus, it’s just good, nerdy fun. ‘Nuff Said, John Spillman President/CEO Spillville Media Corporation

She-Hulk INTRODUCTION Beginning in 1980 and lasting for nearly thirty years, She-Hulk starred in three of her own series’. Due to the popularity of her cousin, the Incredible Hulk, SheHulk received much less attention than Marvel had hoped.

HERIOC BACKGROUND Origin and History

HEROIC TRAITS Great Warrior Jennifer’s green alter-ego could always be found on the battlefield, both physically and legally. As a lawyer, Walters was always in the heat of legal conflict.. She-Hulk, however, engaged in hand to hand combat often due to her position as a vigilante. Jennifer soon learned that a balance between her separate forms resulted in the most successful outcomes. She-Hulk’s powerful combination of brains and brawn set her apart from many of Marvel’s other superheroes.

Deeds of Great Strength and Courage She-Hulk is very passionate about both her professions, mostly due to her desire to apprehend criminals. After working as a lawyer for several years, Jennifer developed a deep sense of justice that bled through into her life as a superhero. She-Hulk always leaped headfirst into threatening situations in which an innocent victim was in danger. While in the courtroom, Jennifer faced a number of dangerous people, both defendants and lawyers. These acts of bravery and courage accentuate her overall character and enhance the quality of her stories.

The origin of She-Hulk’s powers lies in the blood of her famous cousin. After a fatal shot to the heart, Jennifer Walters, She-Hulk’s human name, required an immediate blood transfusion from a similar blood type. Bruce Banners, also known the Hulk and Jennifer’s cousin, was the only immediate donor with her type. She accepted the blood, but its radioactive properties affected her in a way similar to but milder than Hulk’s. Later that evening, a group of mobsters attacked her with the intent to kill, oblivious to her condition. Due to her heightened state of adrenaline, Jennifer successfully transformed into a female version of the green mutant we all know and love.

Passion for Heroics Soon after Jennifer discovered her new abilities, she was troubled and felt as though yet another responsibility was placed on her shoulders. After a minor identity crisis, she gained complete control of her abilities and decided to use them in a way that benefited both others and herself. Due to her previous profession as a lawyer, Jennifer knew that criminal-chasing would be much easier in her mutated form. This allowed both Jennifer and She-Hulk to fight crime from the inside-out.

Overview Key Story Arcs

Overall Theme

She-Hulk: The Comic

She-Hulk serves as a symbol for female-empowerment due to her ability to fight and save others without impeding her natural femininity. Although her strength and courage enhance her status, the character of She-Hulk becomes a damsel-in-distress in many instances, diminishing her role as a powerful female hero. In many cases, She-Hulk feels a need for a male companion, placing herself in a position to become the typical sexually-appealing, codependent female character. She becomes most confident while in her hypersexualized state, even after her sense of independence returns. This contradicts the previous theme of female empowerment, casting a light on women which frames them as sex objects. Again, this deters the attempted theme in her story line, making it all together ineffective.

She-Hulk starred in two main lines of her own individual comics. The first, Savage She-Hulk, debuted in 1980. It consisted of 25 issues and was not nearly as popular as Marvel expected it to be. The second series, Sensational SheHulk, made its first appearance in 1989, after a brief hiatus in her story line. It was in circulation for nearly half a decade and spiked in popularity midway through.

Fantastic Four She-Hulk made an appearance in the 275th issue of Fantastic Four, when she temporarily replaced the Thing as a member. While sunbathing on the roof, She-Hulk noticed that a news team was videoing her shirtless. This angered her and caused the Fantastic Four to team up and devise a plan to delete the footage. They visited the news office but the pictures had already been published. Although ultimately failing their mission, the pictures ended up being edited and She-Hulk was unrecognizable.

Avengers In the 221st issue of Avengers, the famous group decided to increase their numbers by recruiting new superheroes. After a tedious process and much debating, a meeting was held to make the ultimate decision. It was crashed a number of times, but the heroes prevailed. She-Hulk and Hawkeye were the final additions to the Avengers team.

Real-World Connection She-Hulk is a representation of the risk-taking, powerful side in all people. Her human form, Jennifer Walters, represents the logical, headstrong voice that is present in everyone. During her hulk form, She-Hulk does not feel as though logic applies, making every decision much easier and therefore much more rash. She finally learns that a balance between her brains and brawn combines to push both forms to their full potential. This is relevant in the real world because many times people prefer one force over the other, causing an imbalance and, in extreme cases, an identity crisis. We must all learn that both adventure and common sense both play a significant role in the course of our actions and overall character.

Recommendation I personally have mixed feelings about She-Hulk due to her contradicting themes and motives. While she is labeled a superhero, I struggled to find instances in which she fought for the common good. Her motives were solely based on personal affairs, making her more of a self-indulgent character rather than a humble, selfless hero.

SPIDER-MAN BY; MERRITT BEEKER

Background Peter Parker; aka Spider-man grew up as an orphan. He lived with his elderly relatives, Aunt May and Uncle Ben in New York. Peter Parker is just a regular high school student. He tends to stay to himself and is unpopular. One day while he was on a class trip to a science exhibit he was bitten by a genetically modified spider. This spider bite transformed Peter into Spider-man. This bite gave him superhuman strength, endurance, and agility. He also acquired the ability to stick to walls and also an instinctive “Spider Sense” which allows him to seek out immediate danger. Peter started off by using his powers to win wrestling matches for money. One day his money was robbed and instead of chasing after the robber Peter let him go, but this same robber ended up killing Peter’s Uncle Ben. By Ben being killed this caused Peter to want to stop all types of crimes and to help others.

Heroic Traits Some heroic traits Spider-man posses are deeds of great strength and courage, great warrior, humility, and national heroism. Spider-man has great strength because he can lift very heavy objects and has multiple superhuman abilities. His courage comes from his near defeats. Multiple times we see Spider-man knocked off his feet and it's his great courage that allows him to keep going. He is a great warrior because he is always doing good for the city and always stopping criminals and villains. Another trait Spider-man posses is the humility trait. During Spider-mans great quest he is so hurt by the loss of a loved and this makes him want to give up being a hero entirely. Spider-man also holds the national heroism trait. His work and everything he does doesn't go unnoticed and he is known nationally.

Not only is he a great hero, he also juggles school and his story is heartfelt and honest, real life with his role. As a reader we can learn so capturing on of Peter’s much from Spider-man. with his brother. He met The Swordsman and Trick Shot while living at the carnival. The Swordsman trained him to be a master archer and taught him other skills he still uses. Clint found out that his mentor the Swordsman was stealing money from the carnival. Clint tried to stop him but was beaten and left for dead. He continued at the carnival as "The World's Greatest Marksman". He witnessed Iron Man in action, and he wanted to be a hero like him. While attempting to become a hero he is perceived as a villain because he becomes entangled with Black Widow and they work together .Hawkeye joins the Avengers and becomes a respected hero

Hawkeye has no true superpowers, he is just in really good condition for a human. He is an excellent fencer, acrobat, and marksman. Hawkeye uses a 250 poundsforce (1,100 newtons) drawweight bow when he shoots archery. He also has the ability to turn anything into a weapon. He has used tin plates, coins, sticks, and other debris to fight his enemies in his adventures. Later in his career when he joins the Avengers he is then trained in hand to hand combat by Captain America, and he becomes an all-around threat.Hawkeye’s alter ego is Clint Barton. Clint was born in Waverly, Iowa. His parents died in a car accident, and after six years in an orphanage, he ran away to join the Carson Hawkeye doesn’t have very Carnival of Travelling Wonders many of the heroic traits, but

Heroic Traits

the ones he has are important. Clint Barton was not born of a noble birth, and didn’t know his parents very well and spent a lot of time in an orphanage. He also does not have superpowers like other heroes and does not get help from gods or anything supernatural like that. He learned how to become a great marksman, and got there because he worked hard. He was not given anything in his life, he is where he is because of hard work and determination. Hawkeye is very humble and does not brag about his accomplishments or the great battles he has won. He has travelled over a vast setting in all of his adventures and has seen many things.

Key Story Arcs In My Life As A Weapon Issues #1-5 Hawkeye is on Earth after running with the Avengers for decades. He is in a New York City apartment building and faces off against everyday threats. The Little Hits Issues #6-11 is based around Clint Barton’s (Hawkeye’s) love life, introduces boomerang arrows. It also includes an issue told from the perspective of Hawkeye’s pet pooch, Pizza Dog. In Captured By The Collector Avengers Issue #174 Hawkeye is used to taking on opponents way above his weight class. He was never more impressive, however, than when he took down the Collector, an Elder of the Universe. The Collector took out 16 other Avengers, leaving Hawkeye to fight him alone with nothing but his superior marksmanship.

Why Should You Read Hawk-eye? You should read Hawkeye and look into his story because he is such an awesome hero and he has overcome himself to become a great person and a great hero. Hawkeye is a relatable superhero because he doesn’t have true superpowers and has to work hard to be good at anything. A major theme in the Hawkeye comics, especially My Life As A Weapon Issues #15, is responsibility. Clint Barton has to spend time on Earth and has to learn how to balance being a superhero and being a regular person. Hawkeye is relatable and that is why people love his stories. People can relate to him because he has no true superpowers he is just a regular person with special skills that he has developed over time and with hard work and dedication. I like Hawkeye because he is just a person doing great things after coming from a hard beginning.

O

roro Monroe was born from a line of South African Priestesses whom all possess magical abilities. Her mother, N’Dare, is a Kenyan Princess. She marries a photographer from America named David Munroe. Ororo was born in New York, but soon her family moves to Egypt when she was only six months old. Her world was drastically changed whenever a plane crashed into her home, killing both of her parents, and leaving her under the rubble which will give her a severe case of claustrophobia. Ororo was now a homeless orphan, and she had to find a way to survive on her own. She gets taken in by a masterful thief named Achmed El-Gibar who teaches her to fight and she becomes a skilled lock-picker and pickpocket.

. She then wanted to find her ancestors homeland of Serengeti Plain. She moved south, and when she finally reached her destination, the people in the villages worshipped her as a Goddess because of her power to manipulate the weather. She stayed to help keep the villages safe, and that’s where her and her amazing mutant abilities were discovered by Professor Charles Xavier, who recruited her to be a part of the new X-Men team. She became a hero because she wanted to use her skills of thievery and fighting for good. Storm wanted to help people like the villagers of Serengeti Plain.

Heroic Traits

Key Story Arcs

S

torm possesses many of the seven heroic traits that we have discussed. First of all, she was born of nobility, since her mother is a princess and her bloodline contains many South African mutants. She is also capable of amazing feats of great strength. Her powers let her summon great storms, and winds that are strong enough to hold her up so that she can fly. Her training in hand-to-hand combat from her years of stealing to survive, help her even more when she joins the X-Men. She doesn’t only rely on her powers for her strength. Speaking of her powers, that is another example of a heroic trait that Storm has. Her supernatural abilities. Her power to manipulate mother nature is a great addition to the X-Men.

S

torm is a part of most of the “Uncanny X-Men” comics, although some are more important to her character development than others. Starting off with the X-Men comic #201, where Storm actually challenges Cyclops for the role of the leader of the X-Men. In this issue, Cyclops has recently had a baby, and he is having trouble keeping up with his responsibilities of a parent and his duties as the leader of the XMen. Storm notices this, and she feels that she could run the team better. She challenges him to a fight without using her powers, and he agrees to set his lasers on low. Even with a slight advantage over her, Cyclops is bested by Ororo because she outsmarts him with every attack. Storm replaces him as the leader, and shows her true potential as a hero. Another important issue of the comics that Storm was featured in was “Uncanny X-Men” #170. In this comic, Storm is sick with a fever and a plague, but when it comes time to fight on behalf of the X-Men, she does it without using her powers once again. This time she is face to face with Callisto, who is the leader of a New York City group of subterranean mutants called the Morlocks. They then engage in a knife fight to the death. Of course, with all of her experience in fighting, Storm defeats Callisto with ease. The only reason she survives is because of a Morlock Healer. The final and possibly the most

I Why You Should Check Out STORM

n most of the story arcs mentioned, a common theme would be Storms determination. She is always trying to be the best leader that she can be. She tries to do the best thing for her team, and for the people that they protect. Storm is relevant to the modern world in many ways. She is strong female hero, who has great morals and looks out for everyone. Whenever someone needs her help, it doesn’t matter what she has to go through, she will find a way to help them. I admire Storm because she knows that even when the odds are against her, she is capable of great things. She could use her power for evil, which she used to actually do, but she chooses to use them for the good of others. I like how she isn’t afraid to stand up for what is right. Even when it means she has to stand up to her own team member, she will do it because it’s the right thing.

~One of the most popular story arcs that Doctor Strange appears in is Marvel Feature #1. This issue was titled “The Day of the Defenders” and was written by Mike Friedrich, Roy Thomas, and Len Wein. This came out on December 1, 1971. Doctor Strange is in issue number one. abilities. One way that my character is related to the real world is because you yourself could help protect the of Earth. He’s also related to the real world because he shows that even though something bad happens to you, (in his case a car wreck that ruined his career) and being able to change it around. ~I personally like Doctor Strange because you can see that he changes. He goes from an egotistical snob to actually defending the Earth. His powers are also interesting. For one, he knows martial arts, so he can kick butt. He also knows magic which is pretty hecking cool. In summary, if you want to read about a cool superhero, Doctor Strange is the way to go.

JEAN GREY AKA MRS MARVEL BY: OLIVIA MABE

Heroic Background Manifestation of Powers Jean Grey is not only a powerful superhero, but a very complex one as well. She was 10 years old when her powers manifested in her after her best friend died in a car accident. She noticed her powers were present because she could physically feel the pain her friend felt as she was dying. Her parents sent her to be treated by Professor Charles Xavier. He quickly notices her telekinetic potential and trains her for years, so she learns how to control her abilities. When he believes she is ready, he designates her as the first woman X-Man. Jean was born with telekinetic and telepathic abilities, but she learned how to control them overtime. Through training as an X-Man she became a caring and nurturing figure. She throws herself in the face of fatal danger in order to save her team. When she is exposed to dangerous radiation during her act of heroism, she does not die, but she becomes much more powerful. The Dark Phoenix group confronts her and gives her the life of a reborn Phoenix. This may seem like a glorious gift, but it causes her to lose control of her power, turning her an evil mutant for a period of time until her powers became stabilized.

"WE COME INTO THIS WORLD ALONE AND WE LEAVE THE SAME WAY. THE TIME WE SPENT IN BETWEEN IS ALL THAT MAKES LIFE WORTH LIVING." -JEAN GREY

Heroic Traits Terrific Traits To gain the attention of comic readers and movie watchers, Marvel created Jean Grey with many heroic traits that have captivated audiences for decades. Out of these traits the most pronounced are: a Noble Birth, Great Strength and Courage, and being a Great Warrior. She has shown these traits through countless acts in her comics and movies. Although some stories say that Jean was saved by a godlike figure when she was exposed to the radiation in order rescue the X-Men, most stories disprove that. To start, Jean had an average father, but her mother was Gaia, or the Guardian of the Universal Amalgamator. She was depicted as a mutant and an extraterrestrial, instilling those characteristics in Jean. Because of her mutant traits, Jean has superhuman abilities such as telekinesis. She gains more powers such as an everlasting life when is overtaken by a dark inner ego known as Phoenix. She is obviously a great warrior because she is a part of the X-Men and she battles with them. Her traits shine through in every issue of X-Men: The Dark Phoenix Saga, where her abilities are used in full potential.

Why Should I Care? MARVELous Mentor

Womanly Willpower

Besides the fact that Jean Grey is a woman that asserts herself and doesn’t take no for an answer, I like Jean Grey because she is someone I think we should look up to. Jean Grey’s vision of a future planet is something that all of us should look toward. Xavier had a similar vision, but Jean has the willpower (see previous paragraph) to make it possible. She has the ability to show the masses (mankind and mutantkind alike) empathy and guide them through their differences, uniting humans and mutants onceand-for-all. Jean Grey bridges the gap between the two. She is a good representative for all kinds of people of all colors and identities, which is very relevant in today’s world.

Whether you know her as Jean Grey or “Marvel-Girl”, it is undeniable that she is a character that has been dear to readers for decades. I think a big reason she is so loved is because she highlights a very special theme, willpower. The difference between superhuman strength and willpower is your determination, and Jean Grey really shows this. By having the willpower to train and learn more about her abilities, she became the first woman X-Man. By having the willpower to look danger in the face, she saved her whole team. Finally, she had the willpower to take an evil mindset and control it to become good again. This is something I think everybody should try to have the willpower to do.

Story Arcs Involving Jean A Story Saga The most popular story arc involving Jean is X-Men: The Dark Phoenix Saga, where she is featured in every single issue. The comic is known as one is considered as one of the most shocking and loved storylines in comic history, and it documents the evolution of Jean Gray from a superheroine to an extremely powerful supervillain. It’s also another complicated element of this character, full of twists and turns including her powers, traps, and more. It contains her background as well as her becoming a hero and training under the Professor. The story has been a confusing yet captivating read for bookworms for years.

Jean Wants Justice "X" for Xorn Another very interesting story arc Jean was included in was Planet X. Jean was featured in issues 146-150. In this story Jean Grey, Beast, and Emma Frost leave the mansion in which the X-Men live while Xorn convinces a new member of the special class, Dust, to attack Professor X and destroy Cerebra. Confronting Xavier, Xorn captures Dust and keeps her in a jar to prevent her from helping the professor. By removing his mask, Xorn reveals that he is an ex X-Man, Magneto. Magneto enjoys the lack of progress Xavier has made in improving mutantkind's since his death, He has begun to teach his antihuman way of life to the Special Class while partaking in the power enhancing drug Kick, given to him by his sidekick, Esme of the Stepford Cuckoos.

Lastly, Jean was involved in the story arc Murder at the Mansion, in issues 139-141. After finding her husband in a relationship with Emma Frost, Jean kicks Cyclops out of the shared mindscape in order to fight Emma. Using her Phoenix powers, Jean burns through Emma's psychic abilities, ultimately revealing her past. As Jean is about to find out whether or not Scott was unfaithful to his wife during a mission in Hong Kong, he busts into the room with Jean and Emma and requests that Jean looks into his mind for the answer. Jean understands that Cyclops affair was not physical, therefore he leaves the mansion. Later, Beast discovers Emma Frost's remains, shattered in a million pieces. Bishop arrives to look into her cause of death, in which every member of the XMen is suspicious.

Deadpool The Origin Deadpool is a highly skilled, wisecracking, and amoral mercenary who wields a pair of katanas with superhuman athleticism and skill sufficient to deflect fully automatic weapons fire. He usually fights evil and protects the innocent. His real name is Wade Wilson. In his early years, Wilson’s mother died from cancer and his father was murdered by a drunk friend. When he grew up, he became a mercenary. Working small jobs for many governments, taking out various gangs and dictators. He had a girlfriend named Vanessa Carlysle, a teenage mutant prostitute. Wilson dreamed of better life for him and his girlfriend. Soon, He learned he had contracted an aggressive terminal cancer.

Wilson was approached to take part in an experiment that is supposedly going to cure his cancer with a mysterious serum, which is made from Wolverine's genes and aims to awaken other dormant mutant genes in the body. This allowed him gain a regenerative healing factor, but it scarred his face. They tortured him endlessly until eventually he killed the insane doctors experimenting on him and escaped. He became a mercenary again worked a lot of odd jobs. Soon later he donned a costume to cover his disfigured face. He adopted the name “Deadpool” from Ajax and Kilbrew, the doctors who experimented on him. He usually fights evil and protects the innocent.

Deadpool Heroic Traits Deadpool is a lot different from other heroes in comics. Deadpool does not show the normal heroic traits other heroes do. He bends and breaks the rules most heroes abide by. An example of this is that he was willing to kill people. Most heroes like Batman or Spider-man have a moral code to not kill people even if they are evil. However, Deadpool will kill anyone that is guilty, even they are a common thug. He make lots of jokes and have fun while doing so. He also does not care much for the well being of others. never shows humility like most heroes. He brags a lot and doesn’t have much of a sense of duty. He can also be selfish and inappropriate. An example of this his ally cable, Colossus tries to help give him advice on how to be a hero when he is about to kill Ajax. However, Deadpool shoots Ajax, in the head and tells Colossus that he was rambling on. Even though he shows all these traits of not being a hero, he still is one. Deadpool is great warrior and very established in combat. An example of this is when he killed several thugs on the freeway while trying to get to Ajax. Another heroic trait he has showed is Deeds of Great Strength and Courage. As cable was going to kill Firefist, Deadpool managed to get to him first and gave him great advice and encouraged him. It should great courage for him to travel all the way to Essex School in order to get to Firefist first.

Key Story Arcs The most popular storylines are Sins of the Past (Miniseries #1-4), “Payback” (Vol. 1, #18-19), and “Dead Reckoning” (Vol. 1, #23-25). Two other popular storylines is his origin story in the first Deadpool movie, and the introduction of Cable and Firefist in the second. In “Sins of the Past”, it presented a heroic side to Deadpool and it started his long-running courtship with Siryn of X-Force. It also revealed his face unmasked showing his disfigurement and healing factor. The last important story arc was “Dead Reckoning” (Vol. 1, #23-25). In this arc, Deadpool had been groomed to take on the mysterious Tiamat which was seemingly an insurmountable threat to the Earth. Even Captain America failed to stop Tiamat, which left the burden to Deadpool. This was important because the series had low sales, and the writers thought this would be their last issue. So they wanted to go out with a bang.

Deadpool Why you should check them out The themes in Deadpool are Good vs. Evil, Suffering, and Revenge. I think that Good vs. Evil had to do with him being an antihero more than hero vs villain. Throughout his various comics and movies. It prevalent that he is neither a good guy or bad guy. I think it ties into society because it represents people on the inside. We aren’t great and moral all time. We would like to do good things all the time, but we mostly get sidetracked and act selfish. I think that’s what Deadpool embodies, true human character. Another theme is suffering and revenge. After we go through great pain and great loss, we are angry and what to get revenge. In the Deadpool Movies, he goes after Ajax and then the thug that kills Vanessa. But in the end revenge wasn’t worth it. It shows how meaningless revenge can be when you are suffering. It doesn’t take way the pain. I think Deadpool is relevant to the real world because I think represents the things we secretly what to do or say. He says everything he that comes to mind. So to us, it’s like a relief. I enjoy Deadpool because he has no boundaries. He is a very funny and open character, that can make you laugh any time.

Scarlet Witch

Background

Scarlet Witch obtained her powers by her father because she is a mutant. Scarlet Witch’s real name is Wanda Maximoff, and her parents were killed when she was a young girl. She later found out her biological father was Magneto. Her mother had given her to a gypsy family because was scared of Magneto’s anger issues. She also has a twin brother, Quicksilver, and they have a very close bond from their childhood. Scarlet Witch came from a tough background and her life doesn’t get much better from there. Her character is often questioned whether she is a hero or villain. Scarlet Witch does make obscure decisions but she always has her brother to pull her back. She acts on her impulse and doesn’t think about the results. In the end she always comes to her senses and helps the citizens of Earth. Scarlet Witch pushes herself and constantly is conflicted on whether she should make the right decision.

Heroic Traits Scarlet Witch has many heroic traits. The first one is she shows great deeds of strength and courage. While suffering from a rough childhood, Scarlet Witch keeps coming back to help save the people on Earth. Scarlet Witch is a great warrior because she beat basically all the mutants at once by making them lose their powers. All the superheroes saw her as a threat and wanted to get rid of her so she changed the world to where they weren’t a problem anymore.

Another heroic trait that Scarlet Witch possess is humility. She never puts herself above others even when she does extraordinary tasks. The last heroic trait that defines Scarlet Witch is supernatural foe. Every time Scarlet Witch faces an enemy they are usually supernatural. Whenever she fought the mutants by herself, they were supernatural. Overall, Scarlet Witch has almost every heroic trait and with her powers she is one of the most powerful mutants.

Check Her Out! The theme that Scarlet Witch portrays is persistence. She never gives up no matter what awful things are presented towards her. Every superhero is faced with difficult tasks and it’s the way they respond to these tasks that make them the hero that they are. Scarlet Witch pushes herself to be the best that she can be even though she struggles with making the right decisions. I believe that this is a very admirable trait because knowing what is right and doing it are two completely different situations.

This character is relevant to the real world because a normal is not perfect and faces problems in the daily life. I like this character because she is a role model who pertains to everyone who makes bad decisions but always knows what she should do in the end. Scarlet Witch means well and has a good soul because she always repairs her mess ups. Not every other superhero can be related to like Scarlet Witch can, most others we aspire to be, instead of actually relating to. I like Scarlet Witch because her character is extraordinarily different and unique.

Important Storylines Scarlet Witch’s main story that she is involved in is the House of M. The issues that are included focused on are one through eight. Wanda has her children but shortly after she is put to sleep. All the superheroes want to kill Wanda because they believe she is dangerous. Scarlet Witch then changes the world where mutants rule. After she has a hard talk with with her father Magneto she puts everything back like the way it was. The next main story arc of Scarlet Witch is The Witch of Wundagore Mountain. The issues that mainly focused are 185 through 187. All the superheroes fight against Chthon. While losing the battle Quicksilver realizes that he can restore Wanda’s soul to Scarlet Witch. He does exactly that and she uses her powers against Chthon. Scarlet Witch helps the superheroes to victory and they are all safe. The last important storyline that Scarlet Witch is Darker than Scarlet. This issues that are included in this are 56 through 57 and 60 through 62. Scarlet was possessed by the evil Immortus who wants Scarlet to be his significant other. It then looks like Magneto tries to use his children to his own advantage. It is later revealed that it is only Quicksilver watching out for his sister.

Background The king and protector of Wakanda is the Black Panther, other people may know him as T’Challa. He has enhanced speed, agility, strength, and durability and is also linked to each Black Panther from the past. They get the powers from a heart shaped herb during a ritual. Many people believe that Wakanda is the only country in Africa to not be colonized, which led it to become the most technology advanced country. Wakanda is very rich in vibranium; therefore, he uses this in his suit and weapons.

Heroic Traits There is no doubt that T’Challa is a hero. Not only was he born a prince, but he also shows great humility. He will do whatever it takes to protect Wakanda at any price. He wants the people of Wakanda to be able to live their life and not have worries. Another example is national heroism due to being a king. Usually kings, presidents or rulers of some sort are celebrated in some way. As Black Panther he is praised for keeping everyone safe, but isn’t exactly celebrated.

T’Challa fights Killmonger multiple times which is an example of a supernatural foe. Killmonger at one point has the same strength has as T’Challa, so in order to see who the overall best was they would just have to fight with all their strength. The last example is that he is a great warrior. He doesn’t just beat Killmonger he also beats many American superheroes when the United States government takes action against Wakanda. T’Challa continues to prove that he is a great hero for Wakanda.

Major Events Black Panther isn’t just in comic books, he also has a movie. In the movie his father passes away and T’Challa becomes king. Many events occur during the story, but the main one is when he finds out he has a cousin. He wasn’t aware of it his whole life and all of a sudden Killmonger was there and ready to take his position as king. Killmonger wins the first fight and becomes the Black Panther, but instead of using it for good he is going to give Vibranium out to the world. Luckily T’Challa joins forces with M’Baku and is able to defeat Killmonger. The most widely known comic that T’Challa was in is Killmongers Rage #16-20. Killmonger is T’Challa’s biggest enemy. In this part it is brought up once again if T’Challa is the true king instead of Killmonger. Just as before T’Challa beats him and proves that he is the rightful king of Wakanda and that it shouldn’t continue to be called into question. One of the interesting parts is Enemy of the State #6-12. In this part T’Challa is challenged by the United States government. They are trying to take action against Wakanda and even though American superheroes are amazing T’Challa still does everything he can to beat them. He battles with politics and street punks during this section.

Why you should check him out The most important thing to know about T’Challa is that he will do what is right for his country and his people. Two themes in this comic are absent fathers and the power of silence. T’Challa grew up and looked up to his father. When he became king he wanted to be just like him, but due to his father passing away T’Challa wasn’t mentally prepared to take over at first. Wakanda stayed quiet and was able to have the most advanced technology in the world. Compared to what we have right now and what they have is a striking difference. They as a country were silent and kept to themselves. This plays a major role in the story. In a way many people are able to relate to this because they continue to fight for some event or situation and are protective over someone or something. People want to do what’s right for their family just like what T’Challa tries to do. Also we all have to fight for things that we truly deserve in life. T’Challa also has to do this by fighting Killmonger and proving he is the rightful king of Wakanda.

CYCLOPS /SCOTT SUMMERS

Hero Background Scott Summers parents died during a plane attack and he and his brother, Alex, were separated. Scott was put into the arms of Jack Winters, a mutant criminal, to be cared for. Scott suffered from severe headaches and was sent to a specialist. The specialist that lenses made of ruby quartz corrected this problem. Scott’s power erupted from his eyes, an uncontrollable optic beam blast. This blast destroyed a crane causing it to fall into a crowd and bystanders thought he was trying to kill them. Jack Winters found out about Scott’s new power, wanting to use him in his crimes and physically abused him when Scott originally refused. Professor Charles Xavier was drawn to Scott’s powers and found him, rescuing Scott from Jack Winters’ hold. He then was enlisted as the first member of the XMen by Xavier, a team of mutants who use their powers to fight for human and mutant equality. He is now known as Cyclops and becomes the leader of the X-Men. .

Heroic Traits Cyclops possesses several of the seven heroic traits. One of these is the trait of being a great warrior. Cyclops shows having extensive knowledge of combat, despite the fact that he is only a teenager. He uses carefully planned strategies to receive specific ends. Additionally, he is made the leader of the X-Men by Xavier. Another heroic trait that Cyclops is observed of having is deeds of great strength and courage. We see him use the power of his optic beam blasts, which provides an example of strength.

Professor Charles Xavier hears about his great power and finds him. This allows Cyclops to escape from Jack Winters, but also provides him with the opportunity of becoming the leader of the X-Men.

Key Story Arcs The most popular storyline Cyclops appears in is Astonishing X-Men. One example of a story arc in Astonishing X-Men is “Torn” in issues #13-18. In this story arc, the X-Men are manipulated by a Hellfire Club. Cassandra Nova places suggestions into Emma Frost and Cyclops’ minds. Nova manipulates their greatest fears and initially defeats the X-Men.

However, her plan is revealed to Emma by Cyclops and momentarily they are teleported away forcibly. Another story arc from Astonishing X-Men is “Unstoppable”. It is issues #1924 and takes place right after the arc “Torn”. In this story arc, the X-Men are fighting against the Breakworld leaders. Their goal is to stop them from firing a giant bullet to destroy the Earth. Shadowcat is able to alter the bullet so it passes through Earth.

Check Cyclops Out Not only does Cyclops have engaging stories, but he also

can be related to us and our society. As a kid, he goes through the hardships of having a rough childhood. This is later reflected through his actions in becoming a leader. The things he overcomes as a kid, gives him determination as a teenager. Not only does Cyclops have the power of optic blasting beams, but he has other powers. Cyclops uses great energy and intelligence as a part of his power. He is very strategic during combat and uses this to plan what the X-Men should do next. Cyclops uses his powers to show leadership to the X-Men.

BLACK WIDOW

THE DEFINITION OF GIRL POWER

Superhero, rolemodel, fierce warrior? That doesn't even begin to cover it. The major theme of all of the Black Widow comics are that he is not only powerful for her beauty and physical skill, she is smart and clever which gets her out of many situations. I can easily Black Widow say this changed the way I viewed female empowerment. For once I saw a strong woman being praised not only for her looks, but or her brain and skill. Black widow was the first woman superhero i’d een portrayed in a movie to break the stereotype forced upon women of being “just a pretty face” or “just a love interest”. I can easily say Black Widow made not only an impact on me, but tons of young girls around the world.

ORIGIN STORY

The backstory of Black Widow is very complex and different from many other superheroes. Unlike most she was trained to have her powers and they were inflicted on her intentionally by officers of the soviet union. Black Widow formally known as Natasha Romanova was an orphan after both of her parents died in an unknown way. She was recovered by russian soldiers and then raised in a USSR training program called Black Widow Ops that trained unstoppable killers. In the comics Black Widow initially becomes a superhero when she has a run in with the leader of the Avengers, Nick Fury. Although she was created to be a villainous for the USSR, she ended up saving many lives.

EPIC HERO TRAITS

Black Widow has many of the epic hero traits although she does not possess the superhuman powers that most heroes over the years have had. One hero trait that Black Widow displays through a variety of comics is the ways of a great warrior. In many stories it is evident that Black Widow has crazy self defense and can take on almost any enemy. She is a world class athlete, gymnast, acrobat, and is fluent in many different forms of martial arts. Not only is she physically unstoppable, Black Widow is extremely smart. Black Widow uses strategy and prestige to get herself out of almost any situation. Another hero trait that Black Widow possesses is nobility. Black Widow came from very humble beginnings and had barely no guidance as a child. Although she was basically raised to be a killing machine and ultimately a villain she overcomes her past and takes an entirely different route. Throughout the comics and within all the different plot lines Black Widow displays great nobility by straying away from the cruelty she was raised within and she fights for the greater good.

3 BEST STORY ARCHS ! Black Widow’s friend Ivan is kidnapped and she is lured to the USSR. They take her and send a double to kill Nick Fury. The new and the old black widow fight each other. It is the veteran verses the one that took her place. Black Widow being blackmailed into doing some stuff against her morals in exchange for the life of her late husband, who Natasha thought had died TWICE already.
