Letter From the Editor Dear Readers, Here we are again, folks! I am glad that you are taking the time to read our class online publication. Every student in my class contributed to this magazine in some way whether that be creating a page, designing a cover or formatting its contents. I am sure that all my students will appreciate that you have taken some time to check out their work! The overarching theme with this publication is the hero. This was a culminating project for our unit on Gilgamesh and ancient hero epics. Throughout this unit students were tasked with examining the heroic traits and hero’s journey of Gilgamesh and reflect on how these archetypes inspired our modern conception of a superhero. Additionally, students were tasked with researching some basic information about an assigned superhero and creating a page for this magazine that would allow them to make a connection between their assigned superhero and the heroic traits they may have. Students had to research the origin story, key story arcs and heroic traits for each superhero. After completing those sections, they had to reflect on why their hero was interesting and how it may connect thematically to the real world. Ultimately, the magazine came together nicely with students designing pages on every hero from Spider-Man (one of my favorites growing up) to the X-Men and Daredevil. Overall, we all hope you enjoy reading through our magazine and learning a thing or two about some of Marvel’s Superheroes. Now that superheroes have entered into mainstream popular culture, more people than ever are seeing how relatable these characters can be and how through these heroes, modern issues prevalent in our world can be explored, discussed and made relevant for this generation and onward. Cable(Nathan Summers) was born with telepathic and telekinetic powers. He was a hero because Geneticist Sinister planned to use Cable as a weapon against Apocalypse. Apocalypse had Cable injected with a techno-organic virus. His parents ,Cyclops and Madelyne Pryor, had him cloned in case the virus could not be cured. Cable defeated many villians including Apocalypse. The character's first appearance as the adult warrior Cable was at the end of The New Mutants #86 (Feb. 1990). He does not appear anywhere in the issue's story, but the "next issue" teaser. This was followed by a full appearance in The New Mutants #87 (March 1990). At first, Cable was not intended to be the adult version of Nathan Summers, but was created as a result of unrelated editorial concerns. His name,Cable, is a metaphor for being a link between present into the future.

So....Why Should You Check Out Cable? Cable is a hero because he never gives up. Also, his time travel makes the story line more interesting. Cable keeps your attention and makes you want to see what's going to happen next. If you are reading the comic book, I promise you will not want to put it down until the hero emerges as the victor. He readily uses his telekinetic and telepathic skills to conquer his enemies. He is relevant because he tries to get the world to live in peace. Our world needs more heroes like Cable.

Hawkeye
Heroic Traits Hero's Background Clint Barton was born into an abusive family, his father Harold was an alcoholic and his mother didn’t care. Tragedy struck when both parents died in a car accident, caused by Harold’s excessive drinking. After the accident Clint and his older brother Barney were put into an orphanage, where the two later escaped for a better life. While running the two came into the company of a traveling circus. Clint and Barney decided to do odd jobs for the performers in exchange for food and shelter. Two of the performers, Swordsman and Trickshot decided to mentor them; Trickshot taught Clint archery while Swordsman taught Clint acrobatics and knife throwing. Even though, Swordsman and Trickshot weren't the best father figures, they become Clint’s hero's as he continued to impress them and become an ace marksman. While doing another odd job for another performer, Clint overheard that a great sum of money had been stolen from the ringmaster the night before. The thought didn’t cross his mind until he saw Swordsman with a large amount of money, then he began to suspect Swordsman was the thief. Clint confronted them and refused to take hush money; so he was later chased and beaten by Swordsman. Clint left the circus and later returned out of the guilt he felt for leaving his brother Barney there. He felt alone and useless at the circus; until he saw Iron Man on television stopping a runaway ride. When he saw Iron Man, he was inspired to put his archery skills to good use and fight crime.
Hawkeye showed many deeds of great strength and courage when he was brave enough to question his mentor and got the answer he was dreading; Swordsman had indeed stolen the money. Swordsman was quick to offer Clint a cut of the stolen cash if he kept his mouth shut; but he refused and was soon chased, beaten, and left for dead by Swordsman. He again showed deeds of great strength and courage when he proved his mettle in an unusual fashion; by successfully breaking into the Avengers well-defended mansion. Hawkeye traveled over a vast setting when him and Barney were put into an orphanage. They escaped the orphanage and joined a traveling circus; needing food and shelter they decided to do odd jobs for the performers in exchange for that. Hawkeye showed a great deal of humility when he decided to come back to the circus after running away; because of the guilt he felt leaving his brother there all alone. Hawkeye’s identity as a superhero is all about humility; he doesn’t have a secret identity and help his people in and out of costume. And while his civilian identity is public, Clint doesn’t like being referred to as an Avenger; and remains very humble about it. Hawkeye proves himself a great warrior as he begins fighting crime in slum-like conditions. One night, Clint saves Edward Jarvis and his mother from a gang of thugs, who were robbing them at gunpoint. Jarvis and Clint set-up a show for the original Avengers; Clint ties Jarvis up and the Avengers arrive. Clint then shows his skills by shooting the ropes off of Jarvis. After a discussion, the team accepts Clint as a new member; just like he and Jarvis planned all along. OCTOBER

Hawkeye (first limited series):
Hawkeye is more well known in the Avenger movies where he fights alongside the other Avengers fighting the worst enemies imagined. He proves to be a valuable asset when in battle, because he fights best shooting at long distances. He also has so many different types of cool arrows he uses in the movies that prove very useful at times. Hawkeye is also popular in the tv show “The Arrow” where he fights crime in his home Star City. The backstory and a few other elements of the character are different on the tv show, but it is still interesting to watch. And I think the amount of fans and viewers that it has proves it is still a great show.

I think you should check out Hawkeye, because him and his wife Mockingbird are based off of Green Arrow and Black Canary. Also, the themes of most of the story arcs created about him are about, "responsibility, trust, and overcoming devastating blows." Hawkeye proves to be very relevant to the real world, because he is a superhero that doesn’t have any powers. He started his heroic journey at rock bottom and built his way up to becoming an Avenger. I think many people can relate to being at rock bottom and overcoming obstacles to eventually, build themselves back up again. I like Hawkeye, because he is overall ordinary and ended up becoming an Avenger. I also like how he doesn’t hide his identity and helps people in and out of costume. He has a great deal of humility which makes him a great superhero; and an even better person overall. But what I like most about Hawkeye, is how he was inspired by seeing Iron Man on tv to become a superhero; and he never stopped trying to be one. Hawkeye is so inspiring and can teach you a few valuable life lessons; if and when you decide to read/watch his incredible stories.
SPIDERMAN Hero Background Peter Parker become an orphan at the age of 6 when his parents died and he started to live with his Uncle Ben and Aunt May. Through out Peter’s life, he is a nerdy and not a popular student at Midtown High. He goes to a science trip and a radioactive spider bites his hand. The next day he cant see because his glasses were making his sight blurry. He takes off his glasses and he can see even better than a normal human can. He finds out he has super human strength and he has an early warning system called spider sense. He can stick to walls, enhanced stamina. Peter watches as his Uncle Ben dies and Peter goes on the hunt to find the guy who shot his Uncle. Awhile after searching with his powers, he thinks about what Uncle Ben told him “ With great power, comes great responsibility”. He decides he wants to be a symbol of hope and become someone who will stop crime. He creates a bracelet device that shoots strong durable web. He creates his suit from a light cloth , most likely spandex. He is now a 15 year old amazing superhero with a secret identity of a nerdy highschooler.
Heroic Traits Peter goes on a heroic journey after finding his Uncle shot and goes out to find his killer. He has special abilities that help him. He gets tested on this quest because he is filled with rage and doesn't know if he will call or not but decides he will not kill. He refuses to search anymore , instead he becomes a hero and helps stops crime. He comes close to death when he fighting Kraven the Hunter when he gets shot with a tranquilizer and gets buried alive. He has an epic battle with the Green Goblin when he kills Peter’s girlfriend Gwen Stacey and nearly crosses the line but stops himself. He comes back home to Aunt May and works his way up to starting a life with Mary Jane. Why should you check these out?

You should check these stories out because it shows that theres more than just the normal amazing Spider-Man. Theres more versions of him besides the violent spidey and another where he is Captain Universe. I love Spider-Man because he is relatable to our age being a teenager at first that was not popular. He was just a nerd and got bullied but it changed and he stuck up for himself.

Ororo Munroe aka Storm is one of the most coolest superheroes. She can control all types of weather and withstand extreme climates. So here is some cool things about her..... Hero Background The daughter of a rebellious Kenyan princess, N’Dare, and an American photographer, David Munroe, Ororo was born in Harlem in New York, although her family relocated to Cairo, Egypt when she was six-months-old. A few years later, N’Dare and David were tragically killed when a plane crashed into their house. She was left all by herself. Though she survived the event, Ororo would develop claustrophobia due to her time trapped in the rubble of her home. Natasha pursued them but was ordered off by her superiors.On an assignment for S.H.I.E.L.D., Natasha discovered that Alexi Shostakov was still alive, and had been transformed by the K.G.B. into the costumed hero, the Red Guardian. She and the Avengers opposed the Red Guardian and his masters, and Alexi died in the Battle. For a while Natasha abandoned her identity as the Black Widow, just as the Avengers were about to make her an official member. Natasha finally decided to resume the Black Widow identity,. She adopted a new all-black uniform and became a vigilante, battling gangs and organized crime in New York. Ivan had come to America by then, and he served as her chauffeur and confidant. STORY ARCS -"Web of Intrigue" Marvel Fanfare -Ivan, is kidnapped and brainwashed. Natasha is lured to the U.S.S.R. where she is beset by six master assassins, all as part of a plot to replace her with a double in the U.S. to kill Nick Fury -"Itsy Bitsy Spider" Black Widow- the new and the old Black Widow against each other, as Natasha tries to get her successor to understand the things that Natasha herself learned -"Name of the Rose" Black WidowNatasha convincingly framed as a traitor to her American superhero friends and a great angle on the story is that while Natasha is going about her awesome spy stuff while on the run, Liu tells a parallel tale of her friends almost all ex or current boyfriends try to prove her innocence on their own.
Why you need to love Black Widow Black Widow is a great superhero because she is one powerful women. Even though she doesn’t have super powers like Super strength and Super speed she is a good fighter. She can take any superhero no matter how strong and powerful they are. Black Widow shows women empowerment. She shows that women can fight for themselves and don't need anyone to save them. Even the actor Scarlett Johansson is a great person that fights for what she believes. Also there is not many women superheros so it's great to have a one that's powerful.
WOLVERINE BY SIERRA HODGES About Wolverine Wolverine.His ability was discovered when he was a kid. He walked into the master bedroom and saw his father laying there, on the floor shot and killed. He was so angry and tried defending his father and discovered his dark, unknown secret. He was shunned away by his mother and was told him to go and never come back. So him and his best friend named Rose left and went to British Columbia to find a place to live in peace. He is a man who was possesses an accelerated healing factor based on his physiology. Wolverine technically is a mutant possessing animal-like senses, has enhanced physical capabilities, and powerful regenerative ability known as a healing factor. His actual claws have formed to a genetic mutation kind of thing and his claws are actual bones in his hands.
What kind of person is Wolverine First off, he is very brave because he understands the abilities he has and what can be done to an enemy. Wolverine is very selfless and cares for others even though he can be so violent at times he does it to keep the ones he loves safe. Next, having integrity is a good characteristic for him to have because you are being honest all the time about situations your in and what you think though other will think different. Finally he has honor because what he says he’s going to do, he will do. He feels he has honor as well because the guy that killed his dad got what was coming just in a very short amount of time.

BY SIERRA HODGES WHY THIS HAPPENED IN 1845 A BOY NAMED JAMES SEES HIS FATHER MURDERED. HE’S SO TRAUMATIZED HE GROWS BONE CLAWS OUT OF HIS HANDS AND KILLS THE MURDERER. THE GUY HE KILLED WAS ACTUALLY THE MAN THAT HAD MURDERED HIS FATHER. HIS ABILITY WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN DISCOVERED THAT WAY IF HE HAD NEVER WENT THROUGH THAT TRAUMATIC EXPERIENCE. LOGAN ALSO DISCOVERED THAT THE CLAWS THAT HE BELIEVED A RESULT OF THE WEAPON X PROJECT WERE IN FACT A NATURAL MUTATION.
You should check this out because.. You should check out Wolverine because even though he may seem to have fears he hides them very well and they only come out when he has to come face to face with it. He is relevant in the world because he is a hero after all and he eliminates all of the bad guys/people. This is a very interesting story and it really takes you through his life and what he had to experience and how he dealt with it.
"A howl is as infectious to a wolf as a yawn is to a human." He really had to face difficult things and even dealing with his mother kicking him out because of his special ability that he had no control over.

Background Iron man gets his super powers from the metallic suit of armor and other technologies invented by his alter ego Tony Stark. Tony stark agreed to build a weapon but instead of building the weapon he built a suit of iron armor to use against his captors. Tony stark's suit gives him the ability to fly and shoot a beam out of the palm of his hands. His suit is powered by a power core called the arc reactor. Iron man’s suit is made out of a nickel-titanium alloy called nitinol and it is light enough not to weigh iron man down as he is flying around the sky.

You need the heroic traits to be a superhero that everyone depends on in their lifetime and your lifetime because it is important for everyone to depend on a superhero. Iron man needs perseverance to be the superhero he is because when he is trying to fight a enemy he need to be quick and he needs to be quick in attacking his enemy if he is not quick his enemy could kill him. Iron man needs to be brave because if he is not brave no one would consider him as a superhero he needs to get into action to save his city. Iron man needs self-preservation because if he gets killed the city that he protects will be destroyed and there will be no iron man to protect the city that’s about to be destroyed. Iron man needs loyalty toward the people in the city but he don’t need it when he is fighting his enemy because if he has loyalty towards his enemy the enemy would destroy the city that he is protecting. Iron man really needs intelligence because if he needs to make a new suit he needs to know how to make the suit he also will need to know what it needs to be made of and how light it needs to be. Iron man needs strength because if he is weak his enemy could kill him really easily. Iron man needs to have all the traits for everyone to consider him their hero and their protector. Iron man needs to be able to fly so that he can see if his enemy is in the city trying to destroy it.

He didn't buy the soul fully but he had a son and that is why Jonny Blaze turned into the Ghost rider, because the God needed the rest of his money. Many will debate that Ghost rider was brought into Marval as a anti-hero, but that is somewhat WRONG. According to Marvaldictionary.com, Ghost rider was originally introduced to be the superhero for God and is somewhat looked down by the other Marvel heroes.

WHY IS HE SO COOL? Even tho he is looked down by the other Marvel heroes because they think it’s pointless because God can doing anything by himself. His biggest feature that he uses for good would have to be his death stare, because when he encounters danger, he uses it to stun or eliminate the target. Ghost Riders best heroic trait will have to be his courage and willingness to work for his God that bought his soul. He uses those traits to become powerful and strong to fight his enemies.

Today many people have only seen Ghost Rider in toy stores, and most importantly his own film Ghost Rider in 2012. Other than being sold in stores and having a movie, he has been featured in multiple superhero based movies, like Marvel spotlight #5, Thanos #15, and Marvel futuristic comic book.
Was that the top thing on their list? His motorcycle is one of his biggest advantages because he can travel anywhere, including water, up buildings, and it can go faster than all the superheroes. Mr. Rider’s stare can’t always deal pain to his enemies, especially people that have some sort of mental illness like Dr. Strange, Punisher, and the heros in X-man. When Ghost Rider is in great danger he uses his trunk in the Hell charger as a portal he can only use. The portal transports him to his workplace safely.

Black Panther Hero Background
Heroic Traits
The Black Panther got his powers from the Heart-Shaped Herb, a plant from Wakanda that grants him abilities and supernatural powers. The Black Panther also has skills and godlike powers or gifts. However, Black Panther must not use his powers during a challenge to become king as seen in the 2018 movie “Black Panther.” This happens so it will be a fair fight. After the fight, he gets his powers back by drinking a liquid from the flower of Wakanda. The flower makes him go into a fantasy dream with his father, T'Chaka, who was the original Black Panther. T’Challa was born wealthy prince.
The Black Panther has many heroic traits. First his speed. Black Panther is so fast that the enemy can’t shoot him or get to him quick enough to stop him. Next his agility makes him a mighty hero. This is the same thing as speed, but with a little thinking involved an quick reflexes. In addition, the Black Panther has quick thinking skills. A fourth hero trait is his strength. Black Panther’s strength comes from his armor, which his sister makes in one of the most scientifically advanced labs in the world in Wakanda. Quick healing is a fifth heroic trait. In the movie, during the challenges, when he is a without his superhero powers he is stabbed, bruised and lily has broken bones. However, he is healed with the Flower of Wakanda, which also gives back his powers. Last he has not only the reflexes of an animal, particularly a black panther, but also the sense of an animal. It’s as if he senses danger before it happens. This helps him be prepared.
The Black Panther has always been a hero, but he could only take the throne as the new King of Wakanda after his father dies and beating any challengers in a physical battle. The Prince T’Challa , aka the new Black Panther, takes the throne because his father dies during a meeting with U.N Nations. A bomb exploded in the tower and killed King T'Chaka. He also has a love interest named Lupita Nyong’o. He is a hero of the best kind because he always has his people’s best interest in mind when facing an enemy or any difficult decision. Although politically and physically strong, he is also humble and caring.
Also, Black Panther shows mercy after his fights and challenges. Black Panther does not like to kill anyone after he has won the fight. During the beginning of the movie, Jabari tribe leader ‘Baku challenges Black Panther for the throne. As he has Jabari at the edge of the waterfall where he could throw him over to his death, he instead shows compassion and grace and allows him to live. At the end of the movie after he has won the fight against Killmonger, Black Panther offers to use his superpowers and his advanced medical center to heal Killmonger instead of letting him die from his injuries. Killmonger chooses death over being imprisoned if healed but mentions he always wanted to see the Wakanda sunset. Killmonger father had told him Wakanda had the most beautiful sunsets in the world. Black Panther takes Killmonger to see a sunset before he dies. His mercy and compassion is almost Christ-like. Lastly, Black Panther’s has armour like a hero. In the movie, his armour is where gets much of his power and ability to win battles. The amour protects him from punches, weapons, and even explosions. His suit of armour is made of vibranium, a natural resource found in Wakanda.
Key Story Arcs “ Captain America Civil War” - In this movie, we see the Black Panther chasing Bucky Barnes aka The Winter Soldier. They get into a little hero fight and Bucky escapes. Next, Captain America chases Black Panther amd gets into a Jeep, but Black Panther hops onto the Jeep and chases Bucky, who is on a motorcycle which he hijacked. Afterwards, Captain America and Bucky get arrested, but Black Panther does not. Later on in the movie, all of the superheroes have a battle. Black Panther is on the side of Iron Man for political issues. Black Panther once again tries to catch Bucky, but Black Widow gives him a shock ending his fight. He would later return home to Wakanda to be king of the nation in “Black Panther” the movie. “ Avengers Infinity War” - In this movie we see that he is still King of Wakanda. Black Panther and the other Marvel Heroes are about to enter battle against Thanos and his army in Wakanda. When T’Challa, aka The Black Panther, chanted “Wakanda Forever”, it means they will fight and defend their country and sacrifice everything for their nation as they start the battle against Thanos. Volume 3, comic 28 “ Sturm Und Drang” - This comic shows us that Black Panther is just more than a hero. He is a politician and the country's leader. He is a symbol for others to look up to. It shows how even with great pressure and power Black Panther manages to handle it all with honor. It shows that being a hero means not just being the winner of battle scenes, but carrying yourself in a way that makes you a role model others can look up to and learn from.
Why Should You Check Him Out In some parts of the movie “Black Panther, it deals with something we call African Diaspora. This issue is highlighted through the characters of T’Challa and Killmonger. For T’Challa, he grew up wealthy, while KIllmonger grew up facing all the struggles that disadvantaged,poor black youth in America face. At the beginning and end of the movie, we see these poor market places in Africa and the poverty of the black community in Los Angeles, California. At the end of the movie, T’Challa goes back to Los Angeles where his father killed his uncle, Black Panther begins the process of helping the black community heal and overcome poverty by starting a Wakanda outreach center. This shows that Black Panther is not an out of touch, wealthy king. He cares about not just the people of Wakanda, but people of color everywhere. He and his father had been ridiculed by others in the past for not using the Wakanda resources to help people of color all over the word. It makes him more humanlike and a leader and hero all men and women can look up to. In addition, in “Black Panther, we also see the Western views of Africa. On one side, are images of proud Africans with a sense of history and culture. These are put up against images of black life in America, where culture, history and hope have been lost after years of racism and poverty. The country of Wakanda is highly advanced in technology, but surrounded by poorer African countries. Also, Black Panther is a superhero that should be checked out by all because he is one of the first African American heroes in comic book history. Black Panther shows loyalty to his nation when says “Wakanda Forever”, which means sacrifice and fighting for the country. But his loyalty is more than a catch phrase. He lives it and you see throughout the movie as his country and his people’s best interest are always first in his mind. He doesn’t make selfish decisions to benefit only Black Panther. He wants his country to benefit as well. Most importantly, by the end of “Black Panther” the movie, he has taken that same care and passion for his country and is planting the seeds to spread it to all people of color around the world with an outreach center in Los Angeles.

Charles Francis Xavier Professor X was born the son of nuclear researcher Brian Xavier and his wife Sharon. After his father’s death his mom remarried to his father’s colleague Kurt Marko. After his mother remarried Kurt moved into the mansion with his son Cain. Shortly after they had been living together Charles had found out that Kurt would beat Cain in a very cruel way. He had no choice in finding out because his mutant telepathic powers were emerging and he could hear his stepbrother Cain thoughts. After his mother passed away a fire that took place at the family home took the life of his Step-Father Kurt. After that event occured it left him and his Step-Brother alone. At the age of 16 Charles was getting ready to graduate high school and he was completely bald from the side effects of his mutant power. After graduating he attend Bard College in New York City where he got his bachelor's degree in biology. Soon after that he was accepted into the graduate-studies program at Oxford University in England where he obtained degrees in genetics and biophysics. Then later he started doing research on mutants and he ended up finding more mutants. He even met up with a F.B.I agent to discuss the growing number of mutant and tried coming up with a plan to contain them so he came up with X-MEN.

Information I Jean Grey is the daughter of John and Elaine Grey she first experienced her powers when she was ten when she witnessed a childhood friend dying and could feel all of her emotions. When she finally was old enough she gained her powers back and was able to help the X-Men on they’re missions after defeating stephen lang who was trying to hurt the other mutants they had to take a shuttle back to earth and Jean couldn’t take it and died because of radiation poisoning grabbing the attention of the phoenix force that put her body in animated suspension and took over her role which resulted in it believing it was the real jean grey helped many other people by rescuing them from other forces
-Jean GreyHeroic Traits Jean Grey is a caring and nurturing woman she always believed that they’re was good in all people regardless of what their appearances were. Even though she started out as marvel girl she had to earn that title whenever she gained enough power she finally was able to go on a mission with the X-Men which in turn led to her getting radiation poisoning. The phoenix force a supernatural being saw potential in her so whenever she died it brought her back to life and protected her body in animated suspension. While the real Jean Grey was gone the phoenix force took her place after impersonating her for so long it believed itself to be the real Jean Grey and saved many by mending the M’Kraan crystal; but mastermind manipulated her and made her go insane which led to the dark phoenix the part of jean grey that was in suspension then woke up and caused her to commit suicide. After she died she was greeted with a manifestation of death who then explained to her the phoenix force as they were discussing it the residual phoenix force went to jeans body and was rejected, in a desperate search it ended up in Jeans clone Madelyne pryor, later resulting in Jean waking up and finally absorbing the phoenix force from her.
What was she featured in IJean Grey was featured in almost every X-Men movie or comic mainly because she was the focus of wolverine and cyclops and them wanting to get back to her. Although Cyclops and Jean were originally together her and wolverine had a strong relationship as well which was the main reason that she was featured in so many comics and movies the last few comics and movies have been mainly on her and why she has been gone and that she feels bad for leaving them. The last movie that she was in she had come back after she had supposedly faked her death and she had absorbed all of the phoenix forces power and was being mentored by magneto who had told her all of her friends had betrayed her and her wishes by ignoring the fact that she had died and trying anyway to get her back because she had told them to leave her and go find a better life but magneto had told her that they were the ones that were successful in bringing her back and were more than ecstatic to see her since she had come back so in turn it angered her and made her into the dark phoenix force
