A GRAPHIC VIGNETTE ANTHOLOGY OF STUDENT REFLECTIONS
Letter From the Editor Dear Readers, Thank you for taking the time to check out our graphic anthology! Each of the creators in this publication worked hard to bring you the stories contained in these pages. We certainly hope you enjoy reading each of them and learning a little bit more about the students that we teach each day. This anthology is a culminating project for our unit on examining and analyzing graphic novels from a critical perspective. In this unit, we read the text Persepolis which is about a girl who grows up during the Iranian Revolution in 1979-1980. This text exemplifies how the comic medium is more than just heroes and villains; this format can make for some of the most engaging and thought-provoking works you could ever read. Additionally, we explored the visual rhetoric used within Persepolis and how the author constructed the simple but impactful images on each page. Constructing worthwhile and engaging images to tell a story is what brings us to the stories you are about to read. Just as the author of Persepolis used a variety of rhetorical strategies to appeal to the reader, so did students to present their stories to us. These stories range from harrowing ordeals to comedic vignettes and everything in between. My students’ hope is you will hear their stories, discover some new insights and, ultimately, enjoy seeing another side of comic books. Plus, in the end, it’s just good, nerdy fun.
