The Girl Scout Difference

We all know the Girl Scout mission: building girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. But how exactly does that happen? Our success comes from focusing on the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE). The GSLE is designed to help girls everywhere develop as leaders and build confidence by learning new skills. It also ensures that Girl Scouts at every level are sharing a powerful, national experience—girls together changing the world!

GSLE Four Pillars

Everything in Girl Scouts centers around our on four pillars, designed to meet her where she is now and to grow along with her. A Girl Scout has an exciting array of choices to suit her interests at every age:

GSLE Five Outcomes

Our GSLE is a one-of-a-kind leadership development program for girls, with proven results. When girls participate in Girl Scouts, they thrive in five key ways:

1. STEM – engineering, robotics, coding, cybersecurity, space
2. OUTDOORS – exploration, environmental stewardship, camping 3. LIFE SKILLS – arts, first aid, healthy living, friendship, issue advocacy 4. ENTREPRENEURSHIP – cookie business, financial literacy, innovation
science
1. SENSE OF SELF – have confidence in themselves and their abilities 2. POSITIVE VALUES – act ethically, honestly, and show concern for others 3. CHALLENGE-SEEKING – try new things and learn from mistakes 4. HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS – develop and maintain healthy relationships 5. PROBLEM-SOLVING – identify and solve problems in their community 6 | Girl’s Guide to Summer Fun

Supervision

Some of the programs listed in this guide are open to girls only, with council staff or volunteers providing the necessary supervision. Other programs require that adults register and attend with girls. For those programs, marked with the Supervision Required symbol ( ) and noted in the program description, adults must register for the program (and be a current Girl Scout member) and attend with girls using the recommended volunteer-to-girl ratios.

Volunteer-to-girl ratios show the minimum number of volunteers needed to supervise a specific number of girls and ensure their safety and health. Your group must have at least two unrelated, approved volunteers present at all times, plus additional volunteers as necessary for the group’s size. Any adult who supervises girls must be at least 18 years old, a registered Girl Scout member, and background screened before volunteering. One troop co-leader in every group must be female. See the Volunteer-to-Girl Ratio Chart at www.GirlScoutsNebraska.org/ratios .

Guidelines For safety guidelines for particular activities, search our website for “Safety Activity Checkpoints.” Program Symbols Each Spirit of Nebraska program is designed for different grade levels, and may include a specific theme or activity. Girl Scouts Give Back

Throughout our long history, Girl Scouts have been giving back to their communities, country, and the world. They’ve helped neighbors in need, cleaned up parks and trails, held food and clothing drives, made blankets and toys for shelter animals, and completed many other service projects. There are as many ways to “give back” as you can imagine, and Girl Scouts are great at imagining creative, impactful, and sustainable projects. This year, we’ve invited you to explore ways to give back. Many of our programs focus on helping others or include community service components. Here are a few upcoming programs you can attend to help give back...

Nebraska Girls Giving Back

There are so many ways to give back! You are already doing amazing things in your communities and beyond. Check out all these photos featuring Spirit of Nebraska Girl Scouts taking action and making lasting impacts. You constantly inspire us with your generous acts of kindness!

On September 17, 2022, over 3,200 Nebraska Girl Scouts, family, and friends collected over 1,165 bags of litter from their neighborhoods, parks, and creeks on World Cleanup Day. (Troops 20606 and 20832 pictured above).

Girls from all over Nebraska attended Girl Scouts Give Back Kick-Off events in October. Girls made stress balls, recycled T-shirt dog toys, period packs, tie blankets, and collected non-perishable foods for several charities.

Bronze Award Troop 20564 wished to enrich the lives of the residents of the Louisville Care Community. The girls designed and built a raised flower planter, painted birdhouses, and created a water feature for the outdoor space.

Bronze Award Troop 48563 organized and held a socially-distanced parade with decorated vehicles, music, posters, and handmade cards for local senior citizens who were impacted by isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Silver Award Troop 00174 collaborated with a local foundation and school board to clean, paint, decorate, and add new hardware to the Bassett Grade School bathrooms. The girls also used their cookie proceeds to purchase and supply feminine products for girls to freely use, or for girls who may not have the financial means to buy them.

Gold Award Girl Scout, Karen Kalilangwe, started the ‘Read Woke’ program to expand diversity and inclusion in Ralston school libraries. Karen stocked shelves and Little Free Libraries with over 36 books by black authors.

Girl Scout Week is celebrated annually across the world to recognize the founding of Girl Scouts 111 years ago.

Girl Scout Week starts the week of March 12 on Girl Scout Sunday and concludes on Girl Scout Sabbath the following Saturday. Girls throughout the U.S. and around the world unite to observe the founding of Girl Scouts. The first Girl Scout meeting was held March 12, 1912, in Savannah, Georgia, when 18 girls became the very first members. Since then, Girl Scouts has grown to over four million members worldwide. During Girl Scout Week, girls and volunteers celebrate the history, meaning, and rich traditions of Girl Scouts. Watch for information soon on ways to participate or plan your own activities. *Girl Scout Sunday and Sabbath are special days dedicated to thinking about your beliefs, no matter what they are, and how they’re reflected in the Girl Scout Law. You can earn the My Promise, My Faith pin along the way!
