MODIFICATIONS TO THE ENDURANCE RULES FOR 2017

O

n 15 July the FEI sent to all National Equestrian Federations its proposed modifications to the Endurance Rules for 2017. The modifications result from proposals made by the FEI Endurance Technical Committee, the FEI HQ and from feedback received from stakeholders of the Endurance discipline. The FEI asked to send any comments prior to 23:59 on the 9th September 2016. Some of FEI’s interesting proposals: New partition of CEI star rides 5* Event: 120 -160 km / 1 day, 90 -100 km / 2 days, 70 - 80 km / 3+ days. Prize money of minimum 20K CHF. All main Officials to be appointed by the FEI. 4* Event: 151-160 km / 1 day, 90 -100 km / 2 days, 70 - 80 km / 3+ days. Prize money up to 20K CHF. All main Officials can be appointed by the FEI. 3* Event: 130 -150 km / 1 day, 70 - 89 km / 2 days. 2* Event: 110 -129 km. 18 Event: 80 -109 km. Age of horses is a little bit increased: For 1* Event: 6+ years old. For 2* Event: 7+ years old. For 3* & 4* Event: 8+ years old. For 5*, CEIO and Championships: 9+ years old (excluding Young Horse Championships where the minimum age must be 7 years). Mandatory Rest Period will be more detailed and comprehensive: Distance completed 0 – 49.99 km = 5 days 50.01 – 79.99 km = 12 days 80.01 – 109.99 km = 16 days 110.01 – 129.99 km = 19 days 130.01 – 149.99 km = 26 days Over 150 km = 33 days. Championships = 40 days. New welfare implications of the ride conditions: To safeguard the welfare of the horse and the safety of the athlete… next changes can be done: – Reduce the maximum heart rate – Shorten presentation time and – Increase the hold time that affect the welfare of the horse. We asked Mr. De Mello if and how many federations replied to the proposed modifications and what are the future plans for Endurance Riding.

2

SPORT ENDURANCE EVO

The FEI replies “The FEI Endurance Committee has received several responses from its National Federations. The Committee will now send back proposals based on this feedback to the National Federations for further consideration before the annual FEI General Assembly. The next stage is the vote by all National Federations on any suggested changes to rules at the FEI General Assembly in Tokyo on 19-22 November 2016. As is the case every year, all changes to FEI rules are voted on at the annual FEI General Assembly, and new rules come into effect from 1 January 2017”. We will publish the final decisions on the next issue.

Laetitia Goncalves the new champion Photos by Pierre Jambou and Aurore Planchon INTERVIEW WITH LAETITIA

What an amazing result!! You never waited for more than 1 minute and 10 seconds to enter the Vet Gates… Why don’t you tell us more about your wonderful horse, Tam Tam... who is he and what’s his story? am Tam was born in Saint-Remy-deProvence, Southern France, in Dominique Hauvette´s breeding farm. After a while, Tam Tam moved to the Pyrenees Mountains where he was bred. He is a nine year old part-Arabian, son of Baltzik and Adele. At the age of five he entered Elisa Simon’s stables

where he completed all his qualifications until the 120 km. When he was 7 years old, he met Jack Begaud who decided to get him as a birthday present for his wife Marie. He’s very clever and likes to play with us too. On the track he keeps calm and he’s quite easy to ride. I go riding with Jack and Marie twice a week and I help them train the horses. During training it’s usually Marie who rides Tam Tam. Is Laetitia going on holiday…in case, where? Or are you going to the World Championships thus having lots of work to do? I will not go on holiday this summer, because there are other horses to train, so I will spend my holidays on races. For the World Championships I will have to go to a meeting with other French horses at the end of August, and after that the French selector Benedicte Emond Bon will choose the horses that will go to Samorin.

And he’s lucky to have a rider like you! Now tell us something about this picture? This picture resumes the whole weekend, because without them nothing of this would have been possible. We had just come back from the French Championship 2016, and it was a surprise for me to win the title of CEI3* 160 Km Champion once again, riding Tam Tam; the day before Teotihuacan des Greys and I finished 4th in the 130 km ride at the French Championship.

Argentan

The French Champion Laeteitia Goncalves with Tam Tam

I hope I will be given the opportunity to be part of this Championship! I would like to thank Jack and Marie Begaud for all they’ve done. I owe them today’s title of French Champion. I’m really lucky to ride with Jack who is an important character of the Endurance world… I learn a lot from him and consider them family members.

In this issue she’s not a photographer but the main character of the CEI1* that she won with Vasko du Beyrac (Yrwa du Cayrou x Hermine du Beyrac). They ran the last loop at 24,4 km/h (total average speed of the three loops 20,5km/h) with a 7’29’’ advantage on the second podium winner. This was Vasko’s first try on a CEI1* and he won it! «He is a 7 year old Arab Barb, classed “excellent” at Uzes in October 2015. He is a real quality horse, a future champion, having a strong mind, behaving as a warrior on the track: he really amazed me all along the race, never getting tired no matter how hard the track was, but asking me more and more all the time, every single Km we rode on».

I-Duro

S.r.L. is an Italian company founded in 1988 by the Predieri brothers. Vilder and Paolo who are both veterinarians, decided to dedicate their lives to the study and realisation of products and medicines for animal welfare. They chose to focus their attention on the horse athlete. Pharmaceutical and clinical research lie at the base of their job, supported by the precious collaboration of public and private research institutes, veterinarians, horse trainers and owners. Thanks to the strong competence of expert specialists and dynamic young graduates who have grown within the company, ACME has achieved an all-round knowledge of the horse athlete, of its world and the set of problems connected to it. ACME Drugs, the production workshop, received authorization from the Italian Board of Health to produce veterinary drugs for the entire European Community. It boasts instruments that are at the forefront of technology and in compliance with recent European GMP regulations. In the past year, a new department for the production of single-use sterile preloaded syringes was completed and today it represents a new excellence of Italian manufacturing. ACME Drugs is also authorized to produce and sell feed supplements and animal feed. Feed and other products dedicated to the welfare of the horse are always tested before sale in order to guarantee the efficacy and quality of raw materials contained by them. ACME’s products can turn horse athletes into champions.

INTERVIEW WITH ACME DOCTORS

Reidrata Led

Where does it all begin? It all begins before birth itself: a well nourished brood mare that receives the appropriate amount of vitamins and mineral microelements through specifically studied formulations will definitely give birth to a foal with a complete muscle and osteocartilaginous tissue. ACME is aware that every equestrian discipline has its specific needs. At first it dealt with trot and flat racing where horses need energy available for immediate use, high biological value proteins and amino acids for the development and strengthening of muscle mass.

Later, vets and owners of endurance horses asked ACME to create appropriate products for their equestrian discipline. What does an endurance horse need? First of all it is important to reduce fatigue, improve recovery time, prevent and eliminate oxidative stress in cardiac and skeletal muscle. What are ACME’s first products for Endurance? The very first products specifically thought for Endurance Riding are Enerfeed and Carniton B12. The first one is pelleted feed rich in lipids, formulated for athlete horses that have to face an intense aerobic activity. Its integration brings a balanced quantity of vitamins and high biological value trace elements that support the horse during sports activity. Carniton B12 is a supplement feed made up of Carnitine and Vitamin B12, it is available in granulated version or paste. It has a trophic effect on skeletal and cardiac muscle and improves lipids’ use of energy during prolonged physical activity. Carniton B12 fosters high performances especially in those cases that require intense and prolonged muscle work like in endurance riding. Another one of our products is Kilotone, an energizing oil for endurance horses high in Omega 3-6 and Vitamins. This oil is emulsionated with soya lecithin to facilitate absorption and Choline that helps its metabolization. Kiloton provides a lot of energy and calories (9000 kcal/kg) and doesn’t produce lactic acid.

he 19th edition of the Big Mountain Trophy took place from the 7th to the 10th of July 2016. The schedule included a 90km CEI1*, two 120km CEI2* (for senior and young riders), a 2 day CEI2* 70+70 km and a 2 day CEI3* 90+90 km.

Torgnon is an ancient hamlet in the Aosta Valley in northwestern Italy. This borough comprises different communities that kept the traditional alpine architecture. It is located on the right hilly bank of the Marmore creek, at an altitude of 1,489 meters above sea level and offers a magnificent view of Mount Cervino.

he sun, mild climate and high standard facilities contribute to giving this location the popularity it deserves. Besides tourism, farming and breeding represent a rich source of income. For this 19th edition, the organiser Franco Pitti supported by the Torgnon City Council, the Region’s Equestrian Federation and Mrs. Giovanna Piccolo, achieved resounding success and gifted all participants with precious memories. Someone equated Torgnon’s trails with Florac and the the racetrack of the Tevis Cup. The racetrack comprises fast mountain paths suitable for all foot. This edition’s long race weekend was included in the “Torgnon Cavalli” review with a Show Jumping event.

If on one hand there was a feeling that the closeness of the Italian Championship in San Rossore could have brought several athletes to give a preference to this latter, on the other hand there has been a huge response from foreign teams and athletes which contributed to keep high numbers on this event. The choice to give away several benefits in money and fee cancelation had a key role in attaining this outcome. The Organising Committee received praise from national and foreign riders. Many riders were Italian but others came from Belgium (the largest foreign representative), Switzerland, France, UAE, Argentina and China. This event resembles more and more the Italian Florac.

But how were these races, really? 11 athletes out of 17 finished the 85 km CEI1* won by Bruno Mollo on Quassia Distinta (Distintu x Flor the May). Quassia completed the three loops at an average speed of 17,489 km/h, imposing herself over Outsider De Sedini (Gamin de Forets x Lancia III), mounted by Andrea Molteni and the Belgian rider Jean-Philippe Cohard who arrived 38 minutes behind the winner on Eaunoire Vague Ewalraid. Sixth place for one of the two UAE riders, Rashid Mohammed Ali Al Abbar. Switzerland grouped and competed as a compact team: Tanja Borer, Ursula Gertsch and Andrea Amacher were respectively in eigth, ninth and tenth position but reached the finish line all together and almost at the same time. Christina Gorowski was unfortunately stopped at Vet Gate 3 because of an irregular gait. Elisabetta Montanari on Verbena della Bosana (Ber Phanat x Dryna el Aj) won the 120 km CEI2* in 15 hours 21 minutes and 08 seconds, at an average speed of 16,7 km/h, leaving their closest competitors 25 minutes behind. Daniele Serioli on Shamir conquered second podium position in front of the French rider Caroline Denayer on Papillon Du Parc.

The Junior and Young Rider version of this distance showed to be quite tough: in the 120 km CEIYJ2* only 3 riders over 7 reached the finish line. Aurora Salvati on Brianz Chamyrroh (Dubai Pasha x Flaxman’s Chamyrrah) competed with Camilla Malta on Thouleima for first podium position, winning it. Third podium position for Greta Fantini on Odissea (Ussaro de Zamaglia x Zeriana), arriving half an hour later at an average speed of almost 12 km/h.

The 70+70 km CEI2* was won by Samuel Patella with Matea (Meron x Materna) who reached the finish line just one second before Giovanni Petrelli on Errex (Elmen x Eumura). Third podium position for Giuseppe Milia on Texalina De Buissy (Cook du Midour x Ultrachique du Maury). Of the three Belgian binomials who competed in this category, just two crossed the finish line achieving 8th and 9th position.

The 95+95 km CEI3* was even tougher: after two very intense days, a hard-fought victory went to the Argentinian rider Domingo Andres Cordoba on Maestro arriving one second before Eddy Accordini on his beautiful bay Ta Sharab (Shirzal LM x Arabel by Dashar). See you all next year in Torgnon for the 20th edition of this exciting event.

Interview with

Mr. Kevin Croke FEI Official from Ireland

S

peaking of endurance riding, from the beginning of the 2016 season we have noticed an increase of races in those countries considered as “emerging”. Many Organizing Committees have asked us to publish a reportage of their events in order to increase visibility around the world and develop as endurance realities. Mr. Kevin Croke, FEI Official from Ireland, attended many of those rides and better explained us the development process of what we consider new endurance countries.

emerging endurance countries

emerging endurance countries Mr. Croke which “emerging endurance countries” have you worked in and what are your impressions so far? I have worked in many countries outside what might be considered the main stream endurance countries. Most of these countries would consider themselves as Endurance Countries. But in the global sense of producing a potential medal winning team at either WEG or WEC they would have to be considered emerging countries.

SPORT ENDURANCE EVO

23

T

o name any country might be unfair to those who are working so hard to promote endurance in their home country. Geographical location can be a big factor in the advancement of endurance in a country. It is easy to forget the cost factors for those not in the mainstream areas of endurance who have easy access to rides. By example in my own country Ireland it takes two ferry crossings to get to mainland Europe. While those in some parts of Russia can be up to 4000 km from a ride. But the consistent impression I get is a burning desire for knowledge about the sport. What event struck you the most? I think that I have to bow to the wisdom of Eef Schreurs of the Netherlands when I was a young endurance official. Kevin he said “all courses have their own difficulties and strengths this statement I have found to remain true over the years at many different venues. I would say that each event has its own individuality with its own character. It is this character that is developed by Organising Committees to ensure success.

Do you believe that in the near future these countries could become the new frontiers of endurance riding? Endurance is a slow burn and to ensure ongoing success in emerging countries there is a need for

a twin track approach of developing the sport and developing horses for the sport. So yes these countries will become new front frontiers for the sport, some already are and in time may be become one of the big players in the sport. In your opinion, what’s their potential of development? In my opinion there is still tremendous potential for development in the sport of endurance not just in emerging countries but all countries. But to help and encourage the emerging countries I believe that there is a need for more Regional Championships as distinct from Continental Championships. These would be a good stepping stone to Continental Championships. Competitors and crews need to be exposed to the stress and buzz of championships to achieve maximum performance. Team riding representing ones country is a far different skill to riding as an individual. The responsibilities and tensions are very different, this is where Regional Championships can help develop the sport in emerging endurance countries. But it will take a strong individual to take on the challenge of organising such regional championships. National Federations tend to concentrate on the Olympic disciplines because that is where government funding does. So help in the development of rides is always necessary for emerging countries. Such as coverage by your magazine.

he most important names of international endurance were present at the racetrack of San Rossore: Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and his son, the FEI world ranking leading athlete Maria Alvarez Ponton and many other riders and horses who wrote and are still writing the history of Endurance Riding. Gianluca Laliscia, CEO and Chairman of Sistemaeventi.it and inventor of the LIFESTYLE brand that rhymes with the word Endurance, declared: “ The future is now and it is being written in San Rossore as we speak. I believe Gianluca must have been really proud of his very determined daughter when she conquered the title of Italian Champion in front of Sh. After conquering two Young Riders titles and having worn the colors of the Italian National Team, she deserves the victory that will long remain in her heart and will act as a springboard to her sports carreer.

n the 24th of July, at dawn, deers and stags were still resting in the cool shade of the pines of Migliarino Massaciuccoli Park in San Rossore when 136 binomials showed up at the starting line for different race categories. The so called ‘home of endurance’ hosted an impressive event, in terms of numbers and quality. Many passionates of horse racing asked me if it

was possible to gallop for a 160 Km distance and run the last loop as if it was a Flat Racing competition. I answered that only training, humility and a great heart could lead to such results. The CEI2* ride seemed a galloping one, in the last loop the riders ran at 28 Km/h and in the 160 Km ride the leading trio rode faster than 24 Km/h. Riders from the United Arab Emirates hit the centre in all 4 categories of the racing programme, bringing home victories and podium positions.

G

aston Mercier saddlery was founded in the 80’s, back in the days when Gaston was European Champion twice with Mao IV. Unable to find a saddle that fit both him and his horse, he decided to make his own saddle. Ever since, Gaston Mercier has used his knowledge and personal experience to continue to improve the quality and technology of his saddles. Currently the saddlery, managed by Gaston’s son Manuel, produces about 500 one-of-a-kind saddles each year; every saddle is adapted to each individual horse, and all are hand crafted and made in France. The saddlery has also developed a wide range of accessories from saddle pads to girths, always utilizing the latest technological advances (the first carbon saddle tree, novel fabrics, Be Relax stirrups, etc.), and constantly striving to improve the wellness of both horses and riders. The Gaston Mercier catalog also includes anatomic bridles, luggage, technical clothing, world famous riding socks and many sizes of bags. Surrounded by their team of 15 technicians, Manuel maintains a close relationship with his customers to continue to meet their needs and expectations.

G

aston Mercier saddles are all based on the same concepts, developed by Général Lhotte and the equine osteopath : bringing back rider’s weight on the 13th dorsal vertebra for a better balance of the forces between forehand and hindquarters, improving the

horse’s locomotion, and always keeping riders close to their horse. Each rider can find the perfect saddle adapted to fit their needs, based on the way they ride as well as the conformation of their horse. Both old school riders true to the original values as well as the current endurance professionals and champions can find their perfect saddle.

Over 30 years of success The saddlery mainly offers lightweight models such as the Florac saddle, but also provides solutions for riders looking to maintain the minimal weight (plumbed saddlepads or girths). Horses sporting Gaston Mercier saddles was part of the Endurance World Championship 2016 as they have been since the early 90’s.

They brought back European and World Champion titles as well as 6 consecutive in addition to 6 consecutive French many international victories. In addition to the success achieved in endurance, the Gaston Mercier range also offers models for leisure, Jumping (Spring Up) and dressage (Doline) with great results proven in many high level events.

he fourth edition of the Solt Derby took place in the Hungarian town of Solt from the 3rd to the 5th of June 2016; Sport EVO was pleased to give visibility to the event appreciating the precious co-operation of Ms. Karin who was glad to be among the magazine’s collaborators. Although Hungary is an “emerging country” speaking of endurance riding, it boasts strong and ancient traditions in this discipline. In 2012 it successfully hosted the World Championship for Young Horses which brought Babolna to world prominence again after 2009 when it greeted the World Championship for Young Riders. In a breeding and agriculture based country the passion for horses is taken for granted and the thoroughbred Shagya is bred here since 1789 to provide the Hungarian cavalry with strong horses. The region of Solt has been populated since the Stone Age and diggings brought up Roman coins, weapons and bodies. There’s a local legend on the establishment of Solt called the Legend of the Golden Key. According to the legend, Béla IV, the king of Hungary, gifted the

town of Solt with two golden keys because it hid him from the invading Mongolian tribes. The keys were hidden on top of the local Presbyterian church which was hit by lightning. The keys melted and were never found again. Since then they are only seen in the seal of the town. Solt’s endurance event included two long categories, the CEI3* and CEI2* rides, ran by binomials from Germany, Croatia, Slovakia, Hungary, China, Iraq, Slovenia, Poland, Lithuania and the Czech Republic. The winner of the long category was the German rider Belinda Hitzler (average speed 16,59 km/h) on Sharouk a part-Arabian of 2006 that completed the race in a final sprint with Iva Lipovac on Thor. This was Belinda’s first 160 km ride. Thor, bay horse of 2007, is already winner of the CEI3* in Samorin although he’s only 9 years old and conquered 13th place in the European Championships that took place in Slovakia in 2015. Third podium position for Lucie Kubikova from the Czeck Republic with Matyas, a grey Shagya of 2006, winner of the 120 km ride in Greece.

THE RIDE

T

he 160 km Championship ride began on the 23rd of July at 5.30, on a foggy morning. The riders had to rune 5 loops of 40, 30, 20, 30 and 20 km at a minimum speed of 12 km/h. Total hold time after the different loops was 20 minutes. The ride went on smoothly through lovely forests, the sun came up and yet it was not too hot for rider and horse. A qualified team of vets, stewards, judges made sure that the horses didn’t have to wait long at the trot ups after a loop.

The Gold medalist, Melanie Arnold, won her 5th German Championship. She won 3 of the 5 championships with her 13 year old mare Sevinc, born and brought up in the stud of Marbach. At the prize giving ceremony, the German Olympic Committee DOKR awarded the silver medalist, Bernhard Dornsiepen, with the Rider’s Bronze Cross, for his constant success in the discipline of endurance riding.

P

erù has fully involved itself in the endurance discipline, but it has done so in a very special way. In addition to the already world recognized endurance riding, in Perù, under the supervision of APEE (Peruvian equestrian endurance association), they have incorporated a new category: the famous Peruvian paso horse, keeping their traditional equipment and appearance. Seen as a symbol and patrimony of Perù, the popularity of Peruvian paso horses keeps increasing, with more and more fans. These ambling horses are descendants of the Spanish horses that came to America more then 500 years ago. In the conquest and colonization of America, the Spanish used their horses as their best weapon, as well as for the long and tiring work in the fields. These animals brought to the new world the fenotypes and genotypes of native Spanish mares and the the Berber horses that yielded the old Andalusian horses. Smooth gaited horses, generally known as palfreys, existed in the middle ages, and the jennet in particular was noted for its ambling gaits.

eruvian paso horses trace their ancestry to these ambling jennets, as well as the Berber, which contributed strength and stamina, and the Andalusian which added style and action.

The weather, land and pastures of the viceroyalty of Peru formed horses of great musculature, compact tendons and resistant hoofs, bringing to life the Peruvian paso horse. It has exceptional characteristics, that translate into their own virtues of softness, gait, distinction, spirit, beauty and temperament. Of all of them the most noticeable is the soft-

ness of their gait, known as paso. This consists of the unique and natural heritage movement in which the Peruvian paso horse moves its center of gravity to the front. The Peruvian paso horse performs two variations of THE FOUR-BEAT gait. The first, the Paso Llano (a contraction of paso castellano), in which there are four equal beats in a 1-2-3-4 rhythm. This is the preferred gait. The second gait, the sobreandando, is faster. Instead of four equal beats, the lateral beats are closer together in a 1-2, 3-4 rhythm with a pause between the forefoot of one side to the rear of the other side being longer.

warm and pleasant evening saw the opening ceremony of the European Championships for Young Riders and Juniors. The National Guards on their Lusitano horses were lined up to greet the competitors from seven European countries. The President of the event Mr. Jose Augusto Ramos Rocha and the vice President, the Mayor of Alcochete, Mr. Luis Miguel Franco found warm welcoming words for the crowd of riders, their crews, relatives and curious visitors from the city of Alcochete.

The sun was setting on the famous river Tejo where Vasco Da Gama set sail from in the 15th century to find a maritime route to the East, commissioned by the Portuguese King Don Manuel I from Alcochete. This charming town lies right opposite of Lisboa, just over the river. The atmosphere was filled with laughter of young excited athletes longing to give proof of their ability on their fellow horses. Twilight brought billions of mosquitoes and even hardliners fled back to the main plaza to avoid the bites.

arents took their kids home for a good night’s sleep setting the alarm early in the morning, the race began at 6.30 h on the 3rd of September. 35 starters met at the starting line and headed all together towards the first loop. All went well, a wonderful huge forest of ancient cork trees had to be crossed on most of the 4 loops. The riders and their horses were well groomed by the riders’ families, mothers took care of their sons and daughters, cooling necks and giving little massages. The trot-out area was well organized just like the hold area that benefitted of the shade of old oak trees. A very well equipped cafeteria was at everyone’s disposal and there were sufficient water supplies. It was hot though! The thermometer read 38 degrees in the shade, horses from Northern Europe were suffering more than those from warmer countries. Mr. Manuel Bandeira de Mello, FEI Endurance Director, reached the venue the day of the race, he examined the loops and officiated the prize giving ceremony handing out the medals to the winners. The organizers were overall satisfied with the successful results, especially the rides scheduled on the 4th of September registered a great number of participants.

ne of the most important meetings concerning European and International Endurance took place from the 18th till the 21st of August in a beautiful 5,000 hectare forest. This is a yearly appointment scheduled on the 3rd weekend of August and hosted in Brussels under FEI’s auspices. During the press conference held at the Dolce La Hulpe Brussels, it was announced that

The Brussels Equestrian Endurance Masters (BEEM)

the prestigious BEEM will take place for the next three years on the third weekend of August. The FEI European Endurance Championship (CEI4*160) and the FEI World Breeding Championship for Young Horses (CEI4*120) will also be held in Brussels in 2017.

Considerations

These 3 days have been quite special for Brussels,

its parks, its people and its amazing forest. Horses are very popular here and there is a typical equestrian center right in the heart of the city but to see so many horses at the same time is a bit unusual. Whole families, pedestrians and curious people followed the development of the race just a step from home and from their daily routes.

ll this means new frontiers for endurance but at the same time, organizing an important event inside the city walls implicates many logistical difficulties. A round of applause to Mr. Pierre Arnould, Sport Director and President of BEEM, Mr. Nicolas Wahlen, Operation Director and popular organizer of the WEG 2014, Mr. Benoit Dallemagne, Vice President and Pro Event Organizer (Windbag). We had the pleasure to speak with the President of Ground Jury Mr. Philippe Maquet: “The event took place in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, respecting the rules. The racetrack turned out to be just as perfect even though it didn’t rain for days. The vet team worked well without difficulties and eliminated horses when in doubt”. He confirmed us that the only problem regarded the vet gate considered undersized if compared to the total number of horses. Everyone agreed on this point and in the light of the above consideration the vet gates will be definitely improved in the near future. “The race Parterre could be moved to closer available areas, keeping the event in the heart of the city” – declares Pierre Arnould – “Just like The Hague in 1994 or Aachen in 2006, Brussels brings Endurance in a big city. This is the best way to give popularity to our sport”. The Sonian Forest is one of the best spots in Europe, appropriate for fast and technical endurance rides. Brussels administration was positively surprised with this first edition. Next year we will benefit of more green space and paths”. Lara Sawaya, Executive Director of Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Flat Racing Festival and Chairperson of the International Federation of Horse Racing Academies (IFHRA) declared: “This event has all the signs of growing bigger and better in the future.

THE LONG ROAD OF ENDURANCE

Cavalor met with two talented riders Joyce van den Berg and Marijke Visser. We talked about their horses and other topics like the possibility for endurance to become an Olympic discipline.

INTERVIEW WITH Marijke Visser and Joyce van den Berg

INTERVIEW

BEST/FAVOURITE HORSE IN THE STABLE Joyce: I’ve had a very good year with Rouchka de Luc, which led to a qualification for the World Endurance Championships. The selection was announced August 21st: both riders have been selected for the WK. Marijke: Laiza de Jalima, without a doubt. LIST THREE QUALITIES OF THIS HORSE Joyce: Rouchka is amazingly strong, he has the will to work and it is never fast enough for him. The word ‘give up’ does not exist in his life. Marijke: It’s difficult to describe Laiza in 3 qualities. She namely has all qualities of the perfect endurance horse. She’s eager when she can trot, and she is calm when she has to be. She never wastes any energy by pulling or resisting. She takes good care of herself and she’s easy to work with. If I had to choose three qualities, I’d say she has strong legs, a good heart meaning that her heart rate recovers fast, and she is very fast. WHAT ARE THE IMPORTANT QUALITIES OF AN ENDURANCE HORSE? Joyce: Never willing to give up, and a good heart with a fast rate of recovery. They have to want to do it as well. Marijke: True. I personally like horses that are very willing to work, but that are calm and look after themselves. When you then add a strong heart and legs, you know you have a winner. CURRENT TRAINING PROGRESSION OF THE HORSES Joyce: In endurance, you really have to train years towards a big competition. Every other competition is in fact a preparation for the World Championship. Marijke: The season always starts with a lot of walking. You really start slowly and I only start to trot or add gallop sessions to the program after a few weeks of training. Then you can start building up the fitness level by doing longer trails, which you can already do in the form of a competition. I prefer to look at the hours spent in the saddle rather than counting the miles. But I guess that’s just my opinion.

CURRENT TRAINING PROGRAM Joyce: I have been training Rouchka since 2013, and we do competitions together, like the Dutch Endurance Championship earlier this year. He currently lives in the owner’s stable in the UK, so I have to commute to train him. He’s in good shape at the moment. At home, I have 3 seven year olds which I’m now preparing for some heavier work. Marijke: We are mid-season at this moment: fitness levels are already good and the horses are able to reach their peak soon as the preparation matches are over. That’s why it’s currently our job to keep the horses moving, not tire them too much and not take any risks. More specifically, it means that we do a lot of walking, and we alternate long distances with more intense gallop trainings. IS THE NETHERLANDS FIT FOR ENDURANCE TRAINING? Marijke: I think the Netherlands has beautiful and pleasant forests where you can prepare the horses properly for competitions. The only downside is that it’s flat here, so putting our horses on a trailer to the Belgian Ardennes is not an unnecessary luxury: we do hill training over there. ENDURANCE, NO OLYMPIC SPORT Joyce: To become an Olympic sport, more countries need to participate in the World Endurance Championships. I hope we’ll get there one day. KEY TO SUCCESS IN YOUR DISCIPLINE Joyce: During a competition, everything needs to go smoothly, you have to be focussed for 100% and never give up. Marijke: And have fun while riding. If you do this sport with love and pleasure, I think you get so much in return, because success does not always have to be measurable. Finishing the first 40 km with a young horse can give me the same feeling as winning a beautiful race. IN WHAT WAY IS CAVALOR AS A PARTNER VALUABLE FOR YOU? Joyce: I’m feeding Cavalor since the beginning of my Endurance career: the horses look good, have good fitness levels and beautiful muscles. The Cavalor products and supplements offer a complete support for the endurance horse and you just can see that it works.

I recently attended a training day at Cavalor, which I found very interesting. I really like these initiatives from Cavalor! Marijke: I feel very secure when feeding Cavalor. The horses look good and perform well. I really don’t have to worry about their feed. Besides, I can always ask Cavalor for advice: they already helped me to deal with some difficult horses so I’m very proud to be a Cavalor Ambassador. FAVOURITE CAVALOR PRODUCTS Joyce: I feed Cavalor Endurix, Cavalor OilMega and Cavalor Arti Matrix. Regarding the supplements, it depends more from horse to horse. The horses that run the bigger competitions also get Cavalor Pow’red Performance for example. Marijke: Cavalor Endurix is my number one. That’s how I learned about Cavalor. I’m feeding this since 2009 and my horses like it. I also use Cavalor Pow’red Performance and I’m very fond of the Cavalor First 8 Spray: it’s the best product on the market to alleviate skin irritations.

PERFORMANCE THAT YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF Joyce: Finishing top 10 at the World Endurance Championships in Normandy in 2014: it was a very though competition, that’s why I’m very proud and happy to have finished ninth. Marijke: I’m most proud of my silver medal at the World Championships in 2013 with Eomer. The Netherlands had a small team and Eomer wasn’t named favourite. Yet, he finished second as if it was nothing. Our first medal together! MOST SPECIAL HORSE EVER Joyce: That has to be my first endurance horse, Bas de Cardonne: he came from the track (he was a racing horse) and I started doing endurance with him from scratch. We started at the bottom and we ended up riding the World Championship.

So he will always be special to me. I still have him, he’s 16 years old now and retired. Once in a while, he does a training and he still loves it. Marijke: Two special horses come to mind: Eomer and Laiza. With Eomer the ‘real’ work started. We had our first victory together and I was able to ride three beautiful championships with him, finishing second in the last one. A true success story that unfortunately ended because of the high interest in him: the owner decided to sell him. Shortly after saying goodbye to Eomer, I met Laiza de Jalima. We could qualify for the WEG. CHALLENGES OF THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP Joyce: Last year I was already in Slovakia to groom, because my horse just got sold. I know it’s a very flat race so you can easily compare it to a racing track. Therefore, it will be a very fast race. Other competitions usually have more obstacles that slow down the race, but that’s not the case now. I predict that the fastest horse with the best recovery time will win. WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS ADVICE Joyce: Always focus on your horse because there really are no fixed schedules or plans to hold adhere to for the perfect race. It’s up to you to provide everything your horse needs to finish healthy, after 160 km. You really have to pay attention to every small detail. Does your horse start to walk a bit out of balance, or does he stumble: maybe it’s time to slow down a bit. On the other hand, your horse can also suggest you’re going too slow for him in which case you can add some speed. It’s more important to pace yourself, in alignment with others, rather than consistently being the lead. Marijke: and don’t be afraid of your competitors. MAIN COMPETITORS AT THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP Joyce: the UAE riders: they have shown before they are good in Slovakia. Spain and France also have a good chance of success. WHAT MAKES ENDURANCE SO UNIQUE? Joyce: 160 km is a long distance! You demand a lot of your horse. When you then, together with your team, can finish the race with a fit horse, it really gives so much satisfaction knowing that a lot of training, effort and care leads up to such a result. Marijke: Endurance takes you to places you would never go. You learn to exceed your own limits.

I even got to appreciate muscular pain! And the relationship you have with your horse is unique. Finishing with a smile after 160 km gives me the best feeling ever! INTERESTING HORSE FACTS Joyce: I am always impressed how much horses mean to and do for us humans, even though they are much stronger and bigger than we are. In a small way, then can do great things for us. WHEN HORSES DIDN’T MAKE UP SUCH A BIG PART OF MY LIFE, THEN… Joyce: I really can’t imagine! Sometimes I do wonder but I’m never able to answer this question. Marijke: me neither! It’s kind of scary that horses make up such a big part of your life, because I really wouldn’t know what else to do. If I would not be able to ride anymore, I guess I’d go back to zero. But that’s the choice I’ve made: I’m giving everything for this sport, and for now I really get so much in return!

t is known that women are highly competitive by nature and when they find themselves competing in a demanding sports discipline like endurance riding, tension is at the maximum level. The FEI is well aware of this and decided to include and classify among its categories the Ladies one. The Ladies category was also included in the second round of the Toscana Endurance Lifestyle in San Rossore. At the end of July, 27 competitive women riders showed up at the racetrack of San Rossore to run the challenging 4 loop ride. 21 riders concluded the race proving that the track was perfect for an endurance competition.

A successful first year for Challenge Samorin in x-bionic® sphere

The inagural Challenge Samorin proved x-bionic® sphere is ready for The Championship 2017 At the end of August 2016, the unique sports complex x-bionic® sphere in Šamorín hosted Challenge Samorin for the very first time – and it was a success! The small city of Šamorín in the south of Slovakia experienced truly eventful 3 days. Challenge Samorin started off on Friday with a kids aquathlon and kids triathlon, with the smallest triathletes competing in the stunning 50 m outdoor pool and the older ones swimming directly in the Danube River, just like their older triathlon idols did the following days. Saturday belonged to Sprint and Olympic disciplines, with almost 200 athletes at the start lines. Although the start list was predominantly Slovak and Czech, one of the participants was Daniel Unger, who came to visit x-bionic® sphere with his wife Zuzka. The shorter distances were a perfect kick-off for the main foto: Elements Production (Pavel Grmolec)

event on Sunday - x-bionic® sphere really started to live and breathe triathlon and the atmosphere was electric. The bright expo zone began to fill up, most triathletes have arrived in the resort by then and the spectators were offered a wide array of fun activities and performances to choose from, as Challenge Samorin was a part of SPORTFEST, the summer festival at x-bionic® sphere. Performances of popular Slovak bands, sports exhibitions at the facilities of x-bionic® sphere (that offer grounds for 27 Olympic sports), a spectacular show of the Red Bull Air Race pilot Hannes Arch together with his “Flying Bulls” – and that is just a showcase of the thrilling side events that x-bionic® sphere organized for its guests. The pasta party was special too – one of the triathletes became the lucky winner in a draw for a brand new Vespa. Early morning Sunday greeted the triathletes with a dramatic grim sky over the Danube River, which was just over 19 degrees Celsius. The swim course was one lap and although it was in a flowing river, the current was not too strong. First out of the water was Inaki Baldellou Verdejo (ESP) who was off to a great start, but did not finish the race after technical difficulties on the bike leg. Helle Frederiksen (DEN) came out of the water with a clear lead that she maintained throughout the entire race.

The bike course led through the surrounding picturesque villages with a complete road closure that ensured the safety of triathletes. Rain and heavy counter wind challenged the racers on the way back to the premises of x-bionic® sphere and several encountered technical problems. The local favorite, Nika Čorbová, who won last year’s race at the same venue, did not finish and neither did Karol Džalaj. The run course was much more welcoming to the triathletes, as the rain slowly stopped and more people could cheer on their way. The course took place mainly within the resort and hence created direct contact of the spectators with the racers, which was greeted by both sides. Four laps consisted of grass, concrete as well as a special horse racing sandy track, with the finish line directly under the main tribune of x-bionic® sphere’s showjumping arena.

The first man to cross the finish line was Evert Scheltinga (NED), who finished the course with a great time of less than 4 hours (3:58:14.6). „It’s my first big international victory, so I’m very happy. I liked the course and x-bionic® sphere here in Šamorín is just amazing,” he described his feelings after the race. Evert’s solid performance defeated one of the top candidates for the win,

Filip Ospalý, who suprisingly finished fourth. The fastest Slovak age grouper was Ondrej Kubo, with a great time of 4:14:06.8. Helle, the fastest woman, finished only 20 minutes after Evert. „I am very satisfied with my racing today, as I had some time off training for a while because of an injury. I enjoyed the race very much and everything went as it should,“ Helle stated. foto: Elements Production (Pavel Grmolec)

The multifunctional sports resort x-bionic® sphere offered the athletes ideal conditions for all sports as well as leisure and recreation and proved itself as a true paradise for triathletes. The fact that The Championship 2017 will take place here next year serves as perfect evidence. Challenge Samorin offered double the slots for The Championship 2017 – 12 slots for the top women and men in all age groups and 10 slots for women and men in the pro category.
