Observing endurance and its difficult year
L’
endurance, la disciplina che anni fa mi fece innamorare, sta cambiando. Nulla rimane immobile, tutto si muove e cambia; trattandosi di uno sport equestre molto giovane, le trasformazioni sono state velocissime. I cambiamenti sono fisiologici ma non per questo sempre positivi. Negli ultimi anni l’endurance ha dato da mangiare e fatto ingrassare tanti allevatori, mediatori, veterinari, giudici, riviste di settore, insomma tutti quelli che riuscivano a mettere i piedi in Medioriente, in qualche modo portavano a casa qualcosa, presenti inclusi! Oggi il giochino sembra si stia rompendo e si sa, quando qualcosa si rompe è difficile riaggiustarla a dovere. I paesi arabi, gli Emirati Arabi in prima fila, sembra stiano tirando i remi in barca, vedi le gare in casa loro non più FEI, vedi i pochi cavalli comprati nel 2019, pagamenti ai Comitati Organizzatori dove sponsorizzavano sempre più lunghi etc. etc. Sicuramente dietro c’è un disegno ben preciso, sicuramente l’EXPO 2020 di Dubai, le note vicende politiche, i segnali di guerra nel Golfo, hanno fatto distrarre gli attori principali dal nostro endurance. Insomma speriamo sia così altrimenti, e non è detto che sia del tutto negativo, si tornerà al vecchio endurance, dove la passione vera per il cavallo era alla base dello sport. Ci aspetta un anno difficile, di transizione con i World Endurance Championship in Italia e le tante nuove regole dettate dalla FEI. Non resta che affacciarsi al balcone, tenere occhi ed orecchie ben accese e osservare. Noi lo faremo per il bene dell’endurance.
E
ndurance, the discipline I fell in love with years ago, is changing. Nothing stays the same, everything moves and changes and it being a really young equestrian sport means that its transformations have happened incredibly quickly. Changes are to be expected but that doesn’t mean they are always positive. Over the last few years endurance has fed and fattened up a lot of breeders, mediators, vets, judges and specialist magazines. Basically all those who managed to set foot in the Middle East, ourselves included! Today it seems things are falling apart and we all know that when something breaks, it can be hard to fix. In Arab countries, especially in the United Arab Emirates, it seems to be slowing down. Just look at the races in their own countries that are no longer FEI, the small number of horses that were bought in 2019, the waiting times for the payments to the Organizing Committees they sponsored that are becoming longer etc etc. Behind all this there is for sure a well-designed plan and the following have definitely distracted the main protagonists of endurance such as, the Dubai EXPO 2020, well-known political events and signs of war in the Gulf. At least we hope that’s why and it’s not necessarily all bad. There will be a return to the old endurance where a true love of horses was at the base of the sport. We have a tough year ahead, a transitional one with the World Endurance Championship in Italy and all the new rules set by the FEI. We have no choice but to look out from the balcony, keep our eyes and ears open and observe. We’ll do it for the good of endurance.

è obbligatorio ripulire i filtri
D
urante tutto l’anno, i cavalli sportivi e non sportivi ricevono cure farmacologiche e profilattiche, i loro mangimi vengono integrati con i più diversi supplementi nutrizionali, spesso di qualità medio-bassa, al fine di migliorare o recuperare stati carenziali. Anche la dieta può subire alterazioni dovute alla quantità e soprattutto alla qualità degli alimenti. La natura stessa porta inevitabilmente il nostro animale ad assumere muffe e micotossine che normalmente possono formarsi su fieni e cereali. Sempre durante tutto l’anno lo stress dovuto agli spostamenti, allo stabilirsi di gerarchie all’interno del branco e la stessa ansia da prestazione o da mancanza del proprietario, affaticano il metabolismo del cavallo e prima di tutto le strutture dei filtri come ad esempio il fegato. Durante i mesi invernali durante i quali il cavallo ha normalmente qualche settimana di riposo, e bene disintossicare il fegato al fine ripulire il sistema di depurazione dei sangue. Insomma, in qualche modo, soprattutto per i cavalli sportivi, si rende necessario “ripulire i filtri”
per rendere più facile la ripresa dell’attività sportiva dell’anno seguente. Tutto questo col giusto approccio che la medicina preventiva consiglia. È quindi utile individuare i migliori prodotti con la giusta integrazione, obbligatoriamente di grado farmaceutico e quindi senza impurità (le impurità devono essere anch’essere metabolizzate dal fegato senza però portagli vantaggi ottenendo quindi l’effetto opposto a quello desiderato). In quest’organo avvengono infatti gli importanti cicli biologici dei carboidrati, dei grassi, delle proteine nonché delle vitamine. In esso vengono demoliti gli ormoni endogeni e l’emoglobina. Funge
L’importanza del fegato anche da riserva di alcune sostanze, tra cui il glucosio (sotto forma di glicogeno), la vitamina B12, e importanti elementi come ferro e rame. Il fegato secerne i sali biliari ottenendoli a partire dal colesterolo. Queste sostanze sono sali di glicina o taurina e sono fondamentali per digerire ed assorbire i grassi e di conseguenza le vitamine liposolubili. Sono così preziosi che l’intestino ne riassorbe la quasi totalità per riportarli al fegato. Il fegato ha anche il compito di distruggere e inviare agli apparati escretori sostanze tossiche per l’organismo come l’ammoniaca e i cataboliti delle proteine. La funzione detossificante è ben osservabile perfino a livello citologico. Gli epatociti, infatti, presentano un abbondante reticolo endoplasmatico liscio, struttura che accoglie sulla sua superficie tutti gli enzimi deputati allo smaltimento dei così detti xenobiotici ovvero sostanze tossiche artificiali o naturali provenienti dall’esterno dell’organismo. Squilibri dietetici, intossicazioni o esposizione ad agenti nocivi oppure ancora trattamenti farmacologici prolungati, possono gravare sulla salute del fegato diminuendone la capacità di eliminare le sostanze dannose e compromettendo così la salute generale dell’animale. Dobbiamo rammentare che il cavallo, come tutti i predati, è un animale nevrile che poco sopporta gli stress. Questa predisposizione, in natura, gli salva la vita perché gli consente di darsi alla fuga in modo veloce ed efficacie. In cattività il cavallo si sente protetto e tranquillo ma basta poco perché la sua natura si manifesti in modo spesso accentuato. Nei cavalli sportivi il trasporto, gli allenamenti prolungati e la stessa ansia da prestazioni, possono, se non adeguatamente contrastati, contribuire a mettere in difficoltà il fegato. Anche diversi farmaci, indispensabili per le più comuni terapie, hanno per contro effetti tossici, anche se reversibili e sopportabili in rapporto ai benefici che terapeutici, per il cavallo. Quanto detto rende evidente la necessità di difendere la salute di questo importante organo durante tutte le situazioni critiche che possono coinvolgerlo. Per farlo è necessario immettere nelle dieta del cavallo le giuste vitamine epatotrope e gli amminoacidi che possono intervenire nella funzione detossificante. Un fegato stressato può andare in contro a carenza di vitamine del gruppo
B, che comprende la vitamina B1, B2 E B12, fondamentali precursori dei coenzimi coinvolti nei cicli metabolici epatici. L’integrazione di queste vitamine risulta quindi di fondamentale importanza per riportare a regime l’organo. Come abbiamo detto la Taurina è un componente degli acidi biliari ed è coinvolta nell’assorbimento dei grassi, è un efficace antiossidante dei cataboli-
ti che si formano durante l’attività fisica e che vengono smaltiti proprio dal fegato. La sua struttura chimica le permette di reagire direttamente con quella di alcune tossine, neutralizzandole: legandosi alle sostanze tossiche, le rende più solubili in acqua e più facili da smaltire a livello renale. Una sua integrazione è fondamentale per mantenere o migliorare l’omeostasi epatica.

A “filter Clean” is a must
A
ll year round horses employed in sporting activities and also those that aren’t, undergo pharmacological and preventative treatment. Their feed is integrated with various nutritional supplements, often mid to low-end in quality, in order to improve or recover from deficiencies. The diet can also be subjected to alterations in quantity and above all in the quality of the feed. Nature itself can inevitably lead our animal to consume the moulds and mycotoxins that frequently occur on hay and cereal. During the year the stress caused by travel, by the establishment of hierarchies within the herd and by performance or separation anxiety can affect the metabolism of the horse and especially the structure of its filters as for example the liver. During the Winter months horses usually have a few weeks rest and it’s a good idea to detoxify the liver in order to purify the blood purification system. Therefore, it’s important especially for competitive horses to “clean their filters” to make it easier for them to start their sporting activities again the following year. All this is the correct approach advised by preventative medicine. As such, it’s useful to identify the best products with the right integration, which are necessarily of pharmaceutical grade and so without impurities.
The importance of the liver Many important biological substances such as carbohydrates, fats, proteins and vitamins are processed by this organ. It also serves as a reserve of certain substances among which is glucose (in the form of glycogen), vitamin B12 and important elements like iron and copper. Dietary imbalances, intoxications, exposure to harmful substances or even prolonged pharmacological treatments can have an effect on the health of the liver, reducing its ability to eliminate damaging substanc-
es and thus compromising the general health of the animal. We have to remember that the horse, like all prey, is a highly-strung animal that doesn’t tolerate stress very well. In nature, this predisposition saves their lives as it allows them to flee quickly and efficiently. In captivity, the horse feels safe and calm buti t doesn’t take much for its true nature to show through, often in an exaggerated way. For horses employed in sporting activities transport, prolonged training sessions and performance anxiety can, if not adequately treated, contribute to putting a strain on the liver. Numerous medicines that are essential for many common therapies also have toxic side-effects which may be reversible or bearable in relation to their therapeutic benefits on the horse. The above makes it clear just how necessary it is to defend to health of this important organ during all the critical situations that it can involve it. To do so, the right vitamins and amino acids must be included in the diet of the horse so that they can aid the detoxifying function.

a cavalcata inizia a 200 km a nord del Circolo Artico vicino alla montagna Kebnekaise, il punto più alto della Svezia. Le escursioni spesso si tramutano in veri safari, l’avvistamento di un alce o una renna nel suo habitat naturale è esperienza entusiasmante. Una settimana bianca molto speciale, oltre al piacere di conoscere e montare i cavalli islandesi tipici di questa zona, entrerete in contatto con la cultura e le tradizioni dei Sami - il popolo indigeno che vive nelle vaste distese del Grande Nord – vi verrà insegnato come pescare nel ghiaccio e a radunare le renne, inoltre per vivere al meglio questo territorio vi avventurerete in altre divertenti attività sulla neve.
La vostra guida è di origine Sami, cresciuta in questo ambiente estremo vi farà vivere un’avventura unica. I Sami hanno la loro storia, lingua, cultura e identità. Un tempo i Sami erano principalmente allevatori di renne, pescatori e cacciatori nomadi, abitavano in capanne coniche trasportabili chiamate kota , o in tende chiamate “lavvu”. Il modo di vivere nomade è finito negli anni cinquanta, oggi vivono di turismo, artigianato e allevamento delle renne, moderni e stanziali seguono le renne soltanto nei periodi della transumanza e in estate sulle alture. Durante la settimana alloggerete in una graziosa e semplice fattoria a Puoltsa, un piccolo villaggio Sami a ovest di Kiruna.

orthern Sweden is also the ancestral home of the Sami, the indigenous people of the region, whose unique traditions and culture still thrive today. Bear, elk, wolverine, golden eagles and the rare Arctic fox have their home here. As if these natural riches were not enough, this is also the land of the summer Midnight Sun and the beautiful winter Northern Lights. This ride takes place 200km north of the Arctic Circle close to Kebnekaise mountain, which is the highest point in Sweden. You are likely to see reindeer and moose on the rides and hopefully the northern lights. Riding in the snow is exhilarating both on forests tracks and on ice, but this holiday is as much about trying other winter outdoor activities as well as riding. It is also an opportunity to learn about the Sami culture including ice fishing and reindeer herding. Sami guides, who are at home in this extreme environment, will take you on an exciting adventure. The Sami have their history, language, culture and identity. In the past the Sami were mainly reindeer herders, fishermen and nomadic hunters, who lived in mobile huts called kota, or in tents called lavvu. The nomadic way of life ended in the 1950s, today they live on tourism, crafts and reindeer breeding, they follow the reindeer only during periods of transhumance and in summer on the uplands. During the week you will be based at the horse farm in Puoltsa, a small Sami village just west of Kiruna. While one night is spent at the Ice Hotel in the village of Jukkasjärvi. This is an unique and unforgettable experience. The temperature inside the Ice Hotel is always between -5°C to -8°C. You sleep in a thermal sleeping bag on a bed of snow and ice, on a mattress and insulating reindeer skins.

entre una notte si pernotta al Ice Hotel – dormire in un hotel fatto di ghiaccio sembra un’idea bizzarra, eppure è un’esperienza unica e irripetibile. Le temperature al Ice Hotel sono tra -5° a -8°. Si dorme in sacchi a pelo termici su un letto di neve e ghiaccio, sul materasso per isolare viene messo una coperta di pelle di renna. Al posto delle porte le stanze hanno delle tende. Alla mattino verrete svegliati con una tazza bollente di succo di mirtilli rossi. I vestiti e i bagagli vengono riposti nell’adiacente e accogliente edificio che dispone di spogliatoi, armadietti, servizi igienici, docce unisex e sauna. Attività a cavallo La monta è inglese. I vostri compagni di viaggio sono i divertenti cavalli Islandesi, ottimi per montare sulla neve. L’altezza varia da 132 a 142 cm. Nonostante le dimensioni ridotte è un cavallo robusto e resistente. Se non avete mai montato un cavallo islandese questa vacanza è una ottima occasione per conoscere questa razza. Altra particolarità di questi cavalli sono le cinque andature, oltre al passo, trotto e galoppo, il cavallo islandese ha due marce in più, l’ambio e tölt. Durante la settimana vi verranno date diverse lezioni per capire al meglio come montare. L’andatura durante le escursioni non è veloce, verrà stabilita in base al tipo di terreno, ci saranno diverse opportunità di provare il tölt. Per partecipare a questa vacanza è necessario essere cavalieri competenti e aperti ad imparare nuovi modi di montare. Il livello di difficoltà dei percorsi è intermedio. Il peso limite per montare a cavallo è di 90kg.

ou are awakened in the morning with a cup of hot lingonberry juice at your bedside. Your clothes and luggage are stored in the adjoining, warm building which has communal changing rooms, lockers, toilets, unisex showers and a sauna. The Riding Available The riding style is English. The Icelandic horse is the perfect mount for exploring in the snow. The Icelandic horses are small, up to 13.2hh but are strong and fun to ride. Despite their small size they are hardy and have great stamina. If you have not ridden Icelandics before, this trip is a great introduction to the breed. What makes the Icelandic horse so special is
the fact that it controls five gaits whilst most other breeds have only three or four. The two additional gaits are the tölt and pace. During the week you will have some lessons to learn how to tölt. The pace is not fast and is dictated by the terrain, but there are opportunities to tölt. For this ride you should be happy at walk, trot and canter. There is a rider weight limit of 90kgs.

Altre attività Anche chi non monta è il benvenuto, le attività alternative non mancano: si può rilassare in fattoria, fare una sauna, oppure scii di fondo, escursionismo con ciaspole o imparare a lanciare il lazo. Per tutti ci sarà l’opportunità di partecipare a un tour con moto slitta in montagna.
Other Activities These holidays are suitable for non-riders, who will have alternative activities, such as lasso throwing, crosscountry skiing, snowshoeing or just relax and have a sauna whilst the riders are out on the longer rides. Everyone will have an opportunity to ride a snowmobile in the mountain.
Quando andare Organizziamo partenze da dicembre a marzo. L’inverno nel nord della Svezia inizia a metà ottobre, con una spessa coltre di neve che dura fino a metà maggio. Il periodo in cui il sole non sorge dura dai primi di dicembre ai primi di gennaio e in questo periodo dell’anno, poche ore di crepuscolo è la sola luce del giorno. Da dicembre a marzo le temperature diurne variano tra -5 a -22 °. Il clima è di tipo secco e quindi le basse temperature sono più tollerabili. Il periodo migliore per osservare l’aurora boreale è tra fine settembre a marzo.
When to go This ride takes place from December to March. Winter arrives in northern Sweden around mid October, with a deep blanket of snow that lasts until mid May. The period that the sun doesn’t rise lasts from early December to early January and at this time of the year, a few hours of twilight is the only daylight available. From December to March, day time temperatures average from -5 to -22°C. The climate is dry, therefore low temperatures are more tolerable. Ideally, the best time to view the northern nights is between late September and late March.
Come arrivare L’aeroporto più vicino è Kiruna. Kiruna è la città più settentrionale della Svezia a circa 100 km dai confini con la Norvegia e la Finlandia.

n una delle 4 valli del Casentino, in Toscana, una giovane amazzone appassionata di cavalli e di endurance riding, ha coronato il suo sogno e, con la nascita del suo allevamento, vive la vita tanto desiderata. Giulia Bresciani deve tutto a mamma Giovanna e papà Alfredo che l’hanno sempre sostenuta nelle attività svolte. Alfredo non ha mai saltato una gara di endurance di sua figlia seguendola con passione e dedizione, la stessa che metteva nella cura dei suoi alberi da frutta.

n one of the 4 valleys of Casentino, in Tuscany, a young amazon with a love of horses and endurance riding, has achieved her dreams and is living the life she had always longed for. Giulia Bresciani owes it all to her mother Giovanna and her father Alfredo who always supported her in her activities. Alfredo never missed one of his daughter’s endurance races and followed her with love and dedication, the very same that he used to nurture his fruit trees.

sservando dall’alto l’allevamento degli Abeti si vedono gli alberi da frutta e dall’altra parte della strada, i cavalli! Oggi che Alfredo non c’è più, Giulia porta avanti entrambe le realtà, reinventandosi anche agronoma, pur di portare avanti quella che doveva essere la sua pensione.

Ma chi è Giulia Bresciani? ono toscana, nata ad Orbetello in provincia di Grosseto; in questo splendido luogo immerso in un’importante riserva naturale sul mare, sono solamente nata perché ho sempre vissuto nel Casentino, a Stia per la precisione. Sono diplomata in ristorazione e specializzata

But who is Giulia Bresciani? m Tuscan, born in Orbetello in the province of Grosseto. I was just born in this splendid place immersed in an important nature reserve near the sea, as I’ve always lived in Casentino, in Stia to be exact. I have a high school diploma in catering and I’m specialized in cooking and bar service.

Cosa spinge un’appassionata ad iniziare un allevamento di Purosangue Arabi? Io ho sempre avuto due grandi passioni e nessuna delle due ha veramente vinto sull’altra: ristorazione e cavalli, endurance riding per la precisione.
What led an enthusiast to start Thoroughbred Arabian Stud? I’ve always had two major passions and neither of them has ever really come before the other: catering and horses, endurance riding to be precise.

el 2015 è arrivata a casa la mia prima fattrice, e il cavallo per il momento sembrò avere la meglio al punto tale che mi spinse a creare l’Allevamento degli Abeti. La ristorazione rimaneva a guardare, per il momento! Ma perché si chiama “degli Abeti?” Ho deciso di dedicare il nome dell’Allevamento agli Abeti perché esso si trova nel Casentino, in una delle quattro valli della Provincia di Arezzo, posto nella Toscana orientale. Particolarità del Casentino è l’abete bianco, coltivato per legname d’opera dai monaci camaldolesi; essa è la pianta più antica e importante della nostra vallata.

n 2015 my first brood mare arrived and for now horses seem to have got the upper hand, so much so they led me to create the breeding farm Abeti. Catering can wait, for now!
But why is it called ‘‘degli Abeti’’ or “fir trees” as we say in English? I decided to dedicate the name of the breeding farm to the fir trees because it’s located in Casentino, one of the four valleys of the Arezzo province in Eastern Tuscany. The silver fir is a distinctive trait of Casentino and was grown by the Camaldolese monks who used it for its wood. It’s the oldest and most important plant in our valley.
Come hai scelto fattrici e stalloni? Sinceramente sono sempre stata dell’avviso che la diversificazione potesse portare buoni frutti. Soffermarmi su una o due fattrici o stalloni sarebbe stato riduttivo dunque ho puntato su 5 fattrici ed ogni anno scelgo lo stallone in base alla linee di sangue che più mi attraggono, sperando il qualche ottimo soggetto.
How did you choose the brood mares and stallions? In all honesty, I’ve always been of the opinion that diversification can lead to good results. Stopping at one or two brood mares or stallions would have been reductive so I focused on 5 brood mares and each year I choose the stallion according to the bloodline that attracts me the most, hoping for some excellent subjects.
Qual è la giornata tipo di un allevatore? Sono un’allevatrice anagraficamente giovane; gli “Abeti” è nato da poco, sta maturando e con esso la mia esperienza. Ho molto da imparare e con estrema umiltà ma tanto studio e ricerca, sono sempre stimolata e piena di entusiasmo. Mi alzo alle 6.00 del mattino, mi occupo personalmente della pulizia dei box, somministro da mangiare ai cavalli, controllo che le recinzioni e i paddock siano ok dopodichè passo agli altri animali, cani, caprette e gatti! In base al programma gare, al mattino, alleno i miei cavalli; ho una piccola pista di 400 mt dove poter fare andatura alla quale aggiungo un paio di percorsi che ho scelto con cura, tecnici al punto giusto. 15 e 25 km. e finalmente un pranzetto veloce. Nel pomeriggio spesso con l’aiuto di Sascha (amico e istruttore del Club Ippico San Donato), mi occupo dei puledri; gioco con loro, prendiamo confidenza ed iniziamo ad addestrarli con dolcezza fino alla spazzolata finale rilassante. Nella mia vita non manca la preparazione fisica personale dunque 3 o 4 volte a settimana vado in palestra; stanca ma soddisfatta torno a governare ancora una volta i cavalli e dopo cena al letto presto perché il giorno dopo, si riparte da capo, se non c’è troppa burocrazia da sbrigare!
What’s a typical day like for a breeder? I’m fairly young for a breeder; the breeding farm “abeti” was born quite recently and is maturing along with my experience. I’ve got a lot to learn and with extreme humility but lots of studying and research, I’m always stimulated and full of enthusiasm. I get up at 6.00 in the morning, I personally clean the stables, feed the horses, check the fences and the paddocks are ok, then I deal with the other animals, dogs, goats and cats! Based on the competition plans, I train my horses in the morning. I’ve got a small 400m track where I gait train to which I add a couple of routes that I chose carefully which are technical to the right point, 15 and 25km and finally a quick lunch. In the afternoon, often with Sascha’s help (friend and Club Ippico San Donato instructor), I look after the colts; I play with them, we get used to each toher and we start training them sweetly until the final relaxing brushdown. It’s important for me to be physically fit so I go to the gym 3-4 times a week and tired but satisfied I return to look after the horses. After dinner I go to bed early if there isn’t too much bureaucracy to deal with, because the next day we start over!

Aspettative e sogni per i tuoi prodotti? Forse risulterà scontato e puerile la mia risposta ma io sogno di creare cavalli che facciano divertire, star bene e far innamorare le persone che li compreranno. Ovviamente sarebbe sciocco non dichiarare che se un giorno dovessi vedere un “abetino” partecipare e magari fare bene in un appuntamento di endurance importante, ne sarei superorgogliosa! Se poi dovessi montarlo io allora, sarebbero fuochi d’artificio. Scherzi a parte, io voglio solo lavorare al meglio, dare il massimo, poi si vedrà intanto vivo e mi godo la vita che ho sempre sognato grazie ed unicamente alla mia figlia e a mio padre che mi ha sempre supportato.
Expectations and dreams for your products? My answer might seem obvious and childish but I dream of creating horses that make the people who buy them have fun, feel good and fall in love with them. Naturally, it would be silly not to say that if I saw one of my horses participate and perhaps do well in an important endurance event I would be seriously proud! If I could ride it then it would be fireworks. All jokes aside, I want to work the best I can, give it everything, then it’ll come to life and I’ll enjoy the life I’ve always dreamed of thanks to my daughter and my father who always supported me.

he 66th edition of Santa Susanna in Spain ensured the event a permanent position among the most important in the world. 21 nations were represented during the long weekend of the Immaculate Conception with a total turnout of 193 binomials, an amazing result. Once again, Mr. Juan Rodriguez and his close collaborator Jordi Bordas, were able to attract the best international riders to Catalona. The mayor of Santa Susanna, Mr Joan Campolier, was incredibly satisified with the great visibility that endurance offered once more to the small municipality in Costa Brava that turns into a well-known seaside holiday destination in Summer.

he 4 races on the agenda involved the difficult route in the Parque Forestal Montenegro Currado; the busy riders caught a breathtakingly beautiful glimpse of what was often the sea at every curve. The 66th edition of Santa Susanna will also be

remembered for the rain, which fell above all in the days before the race and on the first day. The rain and low temperatures recorded on this length of coast usually blessed by a sea breeze and sun were among some of the elements that disturbed the most, especially the horses.

his magazine is Made in Italy so we of course had to talk about the excellent Italian results in the classifications of Santa Susanna. An applause goes to the Italian Young Rider Champion 2019 Camilla Coppini for the 3rd place in CEI2YR 2 days accompanied by Qualita by Ercules (Ercules X Contessadei Conti); followed by an excellent 7th place for Giorgia Guzzo with Artemisia Bosana (Ber Phanat X Wera della Caldirola). In the same category but reserved for the over 21s, there were 3 binomials in the top ten who were Luca Campagnoni 5th on Alizarina by Lucy (Kaerele de Ghazal X Lusy), Daniele Serioli 7th on Ga Amir Al Autan (Said Pacha x Fidje d Espayris) and Cecchin Fabrizio 10th on Kasimir del Orsette (Gothik X Eva by Turri). In the CEI1* of the opening day we had already applauded Daniele Massobrio and Alicantus Bosana (Ber Phanat X Paparde), who gained 12th position. We’re sorry for all the Italian athletes who were stopped before time and we applause them anyway for having faced the long journey and a REAL race!!!

distanza di qualche mese, l’emozione per la medaglia di bronzo vinta dall’Italia ai FEI Meydan Endurance Championships for young riders and juniors è ancora viva. Le parole espresse dal Presidente della FEI Ingmar De Vos presentando l’evento, “l’endurance è una disciplina unica, che trasmette ai giovani il valori della fiducia, del rispetto reciproco, del lavoro di squadra, dell’equità e delle pari opportunità”, non sono state disattese. Dopo una manciata di giorni dall’oro individuale ai Campionati d’Europa Senior firmati Costanza Laliscia, arriva un altro metallo prezioso, questa volta a casa nostra, a San Rossore (Pi).

t a distance of a few months, the excitement for the bronze medal won by Italy at the FEI Meydan Endurance Championships for young riders and juniors is still going strong. Presenting the event, the President of the FEI, Ingmar De Vos stated “endurance is a unique discipline that transmits to young people values of trust, reciprocal respect, teamwork, fairness and equal opportunites” and he was proved right. A few days after Costanza Laliscia’s individual gold win at the Europa Senior Championships came another precious metal win, this time on our home turf in San Rossore (Pi).

o scorso Ottobre a Travagliato (Bs), dal latino Treviade, ovvero “paese tra due vie”, si è disputato Endurance Franciacorta, gara internazionale di endurance. Nonostante le avverse condizioni meteo, tipiche del periodo autunnale, il Comitato Organizzatore è stato ampiamente ripagato dai commenti e numeri finali. Oltre 160 cavalli hanno partecipato all’appuntamento ormai diventato un must dell’endurance Europeo. Appena si arriva a Travagliato
si capisce subito di trovarsi in luogo di cavalli. All’ingresso della cittadina lombarda che conta circa 14.000 abitanti e che si estende per circa 17 km quadrati, si respira cavallo ovunque; Nella “Cittadella del Cavallo” infatti, ogni rotonda ricorda con una figura equina, la passione per questo splendido animale. Il C.O. formato essenzialmente da due pedine, Cesarina Ciocchi (C.I. Ambassador) e Carlo Zafferri, referente endurance Fise Lombardia, hanno lavorato senza sosta affinché tutto andasse alla perfezione. Una solida commissione giudicante ha poi contribuito a consolidare l’obiettivo prefissato e raggiunto.
T
he Endurance Franciacorta, an international endurance race was held last October at Travagliato (Bs), a place which takes its name from the Latin Treviade meaning “village between two roads”. Despite the unfavorable weather conditions, typical of the Autumn period, the Organizing Committee was generously rewarded by the comments and final numbers. Over 160 horses took part in the event which has become a must-see of European endurance. Upon arrival in Travagliato, you immediately realise you are somewhere where horses matter. You are submerged by horses as soon as you enter the Lombard city which has a population of around 14,000 people and is about 17km squared. In fact, in the ‘City of the Horse’, every roundabout reminds you of the town’s passion for this splendid animal via the figures of horses found on each one. Two essential figures, Cesarina Ciocchi (C.I. Ambassador) and Carlo Zafferri, the endurance representative of Fise Lombardia, formed the Organising Committee which worked nonstop to ensure everything went perfectly. A solid panel of judges then helped strengthen and reach the predetermined goals.

Nella categoria lunga prendevano il via 15 binomi tra i quali vari medagliati nonché la campionessa d’Italia in carica Carolina Tavassoli Asli che ha chiuso in sesta posizione in sella a Pallas (Calif el Masan x Paris Pride). A mettere i sigilli al Palacittà di Travagliato ci ha pensato una super Camilla Malta, capace con Naria (b.c.) (Ali Gazal La x Nesstika bint Essa) di arrivare 9 minuti prima del diretto inseguitore Luca Campagnoni e Najar Ruspina (Uribbe de Ruspina x Pally di Marzaglia). Terzo posto per Carolina Maria Sole su Une de Miel (Toup du Clo x Lahiqa).

n Saturday at the break of dawn, after having listened to the rain fall all night, the engines got running. 15 binomials set off in the long-distance category, among whom were some medal-winners,including the Italian reigning champion Carolina Tavassoli Asli, who finished sixth position in the saddle at Pallas (Calif el Masan x Paris Pride). A super Camilla Malta on Naria (b.c.) ( Ali Gazal La x Nesstika bint Essa) sealed the deal at the city of Travagliato by arriving 9 minutes before her direct pursuer Luca Campagnoni and Najar Ruspina (Uribbe de Ruspina x Pally di Marzaglia). In third place came Carolina Maria Sole on Une de Miel (Toup du Clo x Lahiqa).

Quindi sei venuta a Travagliato per prenderti la vittoria? “Ahhh assolutamente no. Ancora non mi riprendo completamente dal bronzo vinto con i miei compagni ai mondiali Young Riders e prima ancora dallo stesso metallo del Campionato Italiano. Non pensavo che l’endurance mi riservasse ancora una sorpresa.
So, did you come to Travagliato to win? “Ahhh, absolutely not. I still haven’t completely got over the Bronze I won with my teammates at the Young Riders World Championships and before that the same medal at the Italian Championship. I didn’t think endurance had any more surprises for me.

Naria è molto giovane e alla sua prima esperienza in 160 km. Sinceramente non sono partita da casa con l’idea di vincere. Essa è maturata durante la gara, strada facendo. Le condizioni c’erano tutte e allora ci abbiamo provato. Stessa domanda che abbiamo fatto alla Campionessa d’Europa Costanza Laliscia. Cosa provi quando camminando altri cavalieri, magari più giovani di te ti guardano con ammirazione? E’ un’emozione indescrivibile, strana. Io sono arrivata a questo punto della mia carriera sportiva grazie a tanta passione e dedizione ma soprattutto grazie ai miei due cavalli. Con soli due cavalli sono riuscita a concretizzare anni di lavoro. Non si raggiungono risultati senza la giusta programmazione e senza il fondamentale supporto della tua famiglia. Quali sono i tuoi prossimi impegni? Per ora mi godo quello che ho, mi riguardo ogni tanto i tanti trofei dopodichè con Daniele Serioli, decideremo il da farsi.

Naria is really young and it’s her first experience in 160km. I honestly didn’t come here thinking I would win. She matured along the way, during the race. We asked the European champion, Costanza Laliscia the same question. How do you feel when other riders who might be younger than you, look up to you? It’s a strange, indescribable feeling. I’ve got to this point in my sporting career thanks to a lot of passion and dedication but above all thanks to my two horses. I’ve managed to put into effect years of work with only two horses. You don’t get results without having the right planning and without the fundamental support of your family. What have you got planned next? For now I’m going to enjoy what I’ve got, I sometimes watch the numerous competitions again and after that with Daniele Serioli we’ll decide what needs to be done.

eturning to the race, another amazon won the CE13 160km, in two days. The victory and the best condition flew to Slovakia at the hands of Lucia Marosava on Shereen. They finished the tough trial in 11 hours and 52 minutes. The croatian Bojan Lipovan came second place. The two star category, which is usually the fiercest, went to the Tuscan expert Patrizia Cianferoni on Obi Kenobi (Trudieshoeve Rico x
Rico x Denise) che abbiamo intercettata felice all’arrivo con il suo compagno ed ex Team Vet della nazionale italiana Fabrizio Fantoni. Patrizia, oggi è stato il tuo mondiale?? Dieri proprio di si. Questo è il mio mondiale e mi spiego!!! Quest’anno ho vissuto una spiacevole avventura. Dopo tanti anni di lavoro sono stata selezionata nella nazionale italiana per andare a Euston Park. Purtroppo non mi sono trovata d’accordo con alcune scelte o meglio con la linea adottata dalla commissione tecnica dunque ho, a malincuore, rinunciato. Ho continuato il mio percorso seguita dal mio tecnico nonché compagno di vita Fabrizio Fantoni. Abbiamo puntato su una gara all’estero centrando un decimo posto in 160 km. al Campionato di Francia ed oggi mi sono presa la mia rivincita. Con Obi Kenobi dovevo correre il mondiale 7 anni a San Rossore ma a causa di un problemino non siamo potuti partire. Oggi ha dimostrato tutto il suo valore e sono felicissima. Ringrazio il mio staff e Serena, colei che lo ha lavorato quando più giovane.

Denise,) who we met happy on her arrival with her partner Fabrizio Fantoni ex member of the Italian national vet team. Was today your world competition, Patrizia?? I would say so. This is my world competition and I’ll explain why!! This year I went through an unpleasant adventure. After many years work I was selected for the national Italian team to go to Euston Park. Unfortunately, I didn’t agree with some of the choices or rather with the position taken by the technical commission so I reluctantly had to turn it down. I continued along my path followed by my technician Fabrizio Fantoni who is also my life partner. We aimed at a competition abroad getting tenth palce in 160km at the French Championship and today I got my payback. I should have run the 7 year world competition at San Rossore but due to some difficulties we weren’t able to go. Today he showed his worth and I’m so pleased. I would like to thank my staff and Serena who worked on him when he was younger.

HERE’S FAUSTO FIORUCCI C.T- FROM THE BENCH TO THE FIELD? That’s right, first of all I’m a horse rider!!! Luckily my horse wasn’t discarded otherwise how would I have explained it to the guys I lead? I tried to show them that I know how to do what I ask of them too… just like the proverb that’s never wrong: don’t ask of others what you are not able to do yourself.

assiamo alla lunga CEI2 in due giorni che è andata a Martina Settembre su Rahabana dopo 8 ore e 40 minuti di sella. Secondo posto con best al collo per Valentina Raisa e Silvan mentre al terzo posto troviamo Giulia Galantino che dal caldo degli Emirati è tornata a correre in Italia e qui a Travagliata on compagnia di Superbo (Banhkok x Monella Matta). Ma veniamo alla 120 YR che non poteva che andare a casa della Campionessa d’Europa Costanza Laliscia con Assim du Barthas (Djin Lotois x Kamchatka). Dove c’è lei la classifica è pressochè fatta!!!

et’s go on to the long distance CEI2 in two day which went to Martina Settembre on Rahabana after 8 hours and 40 minutes in the saddle. Second place with best at the neck went to Valentina Raisa and Silvan, while at thrid place we find Giulia Galantino who returned to race in Italy from the heat of the emirates and here in Travagliata on Superbo (Banhkok x Monella Matta). Wherever she is the classification is almost done!

COSTANZA, MA NON TI STANCHI MAI DI VINCERE? Assolutamente no, ogni gara è una gara a sé, ogni vittoria ha una sensazione diversa, un profumo diverso. Ogni cavallo ti regala nuove emozioni e questa è linfa vitale per me. La medaglia d’Europa è stata un sogno grandissimo che solo ora sto realizzando. È stato per me, più che un obiettivo finale, un punto dal quale ripartire.
DON’T YOU EVER GET TIRED OF WINNING, COSTANZA? Absolutely not, each competition is different, each victory offers a different feeling, a different taste. Each horse gives you new emotions and this is lifeblood for me. The European medal was one of my biggest dreams and I’m just starting to realise it’s true. It wasn’t a final goal for me but rather a starting point.

We continue with the two CEI competitions on the Saturday and on the Sunday which went respectively to Letzia Crotti on Salima (Muschette de Zamaglia x Mo Salima) and to Carlo Vizzini on Imam di Ambelia (Sakeen x Dar Eyah). Completing the podium, here regional, the applause went to Alice Gurieri on Sospiro di Aladin in the CEN B, to Giulia Zazzli and Ingens. Bosana in the CEN A and to Marco Bianchi on Newer in the newcomers.

A Travagliato dopo la tappa di Provaglio d’Iseo, si assegnava il titolo al vincitore del Trofeo Ambassador fortemente voluto dal deus ex machina dell’evento Cesarina Ciocchi. Grande successo quello ottenuto dall’iniziativa che fa ben sperare per il suo futuro. Ebbene grazie a due quarti posti centrati, Chiara Mazzocchi tesserata proprio all’Ambassador, vince il con 227 punti totali. Alle sue spalle con 218 punti Samuel Perri, e Letizia Crotti con 204.
At Travagliato after the stage in Provaglio d’Iseo, the title of winner of the Ambassador trophy was assigned, much desired by the deus ex machina of the event Cesarina Ciocchi. This initiative was an enormous success which its future seems bright. Thanks to the gain of two fourth places, Chiara Mazzochi, a member of Ambassador won with 227 in total. Just behind her came Samuel Perri with 218 and Letizia Crotti with 204.

o scorso novembre si è disputata a Follonica l’annuale gara internazionale che ha visto ai nastri di partenza circa 170 binomi. Probabilmente questa edizione verrà ricordata come la più bagnata di sempre, si spera. Tutta l’Italia, soprattutto la Toscana, è stata colpita da piogge torrenziali che hanno creato non pochi problemi a tanti comuni, specie quelli a ridosso dei fiumi.

L
ast November the annual international race was held in Follonica and 170 binomials presented themselves at the starting line. This edition will probably be remembered as the wettest ever, or so we hope. The whole of Italy but in particular Tuscany, was hit by torrential rain which caused a lot of problems for many municipalities, especially those near rivers.

ai come a Follonica è uscito fuori il vero carisma dell’endurista, quello sano, senza paura, spinto da passione pura. In qualunque altro sport tanti atleti avrebbero desistito dal partecipare, immaginate nel calcio o in altre pratiche
all’aperto. Nonostante le previsioni contro, la carovana dell’endurance si è mossa verso il comune grossetano, consapevole di aver scelto un sport difficile dove la sua vera natura è insita nel nome stesso della disciplina equestre, l’endurance.

I
n Follonica the true charisma of the endurance rider emerged like never before. A healthy, fearless charisma driven by pure passion. Despite the forecast being against them, the endurance convoy headed toward the municipality of Grosseto, aware that they had
chosen a difficult sport. An equestrian discipline whose true nature is apparent even in its very name, that is endurance. Obviously, the cool of the riders who were both Italian and not, was assured by the presence of an expert Organizing Committee which was capable and all around.

alla tante difficoltà con apparente tranquillità, dettata ovviamente dalla decennale esperienza sul campo, prima come cavalieri, poi come organizzatori. Più volte hanno dovuto mettere mano al piano sicurezza passando dal piano A, al piano B per poi attivare anche la riserva finale, il piano C. Tutto è filato liscio, nonostante il percorso sia stato messo a dura prova dalle piogge.

he show director of the event was Giorgio Presenti, with the co-operation of the Endurance Academy and the staff of the Generali family. Together they affronted the many difficulties with apparent calm, obviously helped by their decade long experience in the field, first as riders, then as organizers. They had to change the safety plan a few
times and passed from Plan A to Plan B and finally had to activate the reserve Plan C. Everything went well, despite the course being put to the test by the rain. The Pini Hippodrome was everyone’s shelter and the point to reach whatever the cost. The generous prizemoney on offer thanks to ANICA and MiPAAFT made sure that the binomials battled it out with no holds barred.

Ippodromo dei Pini è stato il rifugio per tutti, il punto da raggiungere ad ogni costo. Sul piatto c’erano ricchi montepremi firmati ANICA e MiPAAFT dunque tutti i binomi si sono dati battaglia senza esclusione di colpi. Il risultato in termini veterinari è stato soddisfacente an-
che se in classifica si sono registrate parecchie eliminazioni, soprattutto dovute a problemi di andatura sugli arti posteriori. Comunque, come più volte ribadito, vogliamo pensare che tutti i partecipanti siano stati vincitori perchè soltanto avere il coraggio di partire affrontando le citate avverse condizioni, equivale ad una vittoria.

n veterinary terms the results were satisfying even though quite a few eliminations were registered in the classification above all due to hind-leg gait problems. Anyway, as we have reiterated many times, we like to think of all the participants as winners because just having the courage
to leave and face the adverse conditions we mentioned is a victory in itself. The constant presence despite the rain and wind of Giuseppe Bicocchi Vice President Vicario of FISE, was touching. An omnipresent figure very interested in the discipline, an important signal for his future in it.

ome di consueto evitiamo di raccontare una gara che è stata vissuta LIVE con le classifiche e con il GPS in uso, per il resto le fotografie parlano chiaro e raccontano meglio di ogni parola. Plauso alla campionessa italiana in carica Carolina Tavassoli Asli con Taris di Gallura, binomio vincitore della CEI2*, a Soraya Susco e Alcazar Armor, primi nella CEI2* Ladies, a Livia Barbato e Pianist P nella 120 YR, a Vittoria Ciuchi e Iskra, in alto nella CEI1*, a Diana Origgi e Ginepro Baio nella 90 FEI, a Costanza Laliscia e Boby Destourelles nella stessa distanza ma riservata agli under 21. Un ringraziamento particolare va all’ANICA e al MiPAAFT che hanno voluto accostare il proprio nome all’evento, donandogli lustro e ancora più importanza.
