Only the crazy never change
Editorial
by Luca Giannangeli
A
fter having published 25 issues of Sport Endurance Evo and celebrated its 10th anniversary, the time has come to turn the page and change something. I would never give up the printed edition, dear trees please do forgive me...but Sport Evo alone will not have destroyed the Amazon forest! Today, a small revolution is needed. We mainly developed two different ideas. The first one is dedicated to my home country which longs to have a printed magazine. The second one is for novice riders who are eager to learn. For this reason we have created a new section inside Sport Endurance Evo. This section will have a cover of its own dedicated to endurance riding in Italy. The section will be around 20 pages long branded by the Italian Equestrian Sports Federation. My desire is to abandon the concept of a unique sponsor in order to become a reporter and register what I myself witness as a journalist and not as emissary of the organizing committee. This is the only way possible to be free to tell facts that are the closest possible to reality. How will we go on? Hopefully thanks to your subscriptions and the support of our faithful sponsors.
EGON - E
T
he association of Vitamina E and Selenium represents one of the body’s main antioxidant systems. Its role is to prevent tissue damage caused by intense training and competition. The very demanding discipline of Endurance riding causes free radicals accumulation. In these conditions, the inadequate defenses of the antioxidant systems, can damage skeletal muscle (diaphragmatic too), cardiac muscle and lung tissues.
FUNCTIONS: Vitamin E is liposoluble, meaning that it is soluble in lipids and it is considered a multifunction catalyst because it has an important role in many processes of the organism: it strengthens the immune system, cellular respiration and optimizes the absorption and supply of vitamin A. WHAT FOODS PROVIDE VITAMIN A?: Vitamin E is mainly found in fresh forage (grass). If the horse doesn’t receive a sufficient amount of fresh forage throughout the year and has no vitamin E supplementation through food he will encounter severe problems. Alfalfa and corn are high in Vitamin E but they cannot be a horse’s main and only feed. In any case, although it is quite an imbalanced diet, feeding
VITAMIN E and SELENIUM: when a deficiency becomes dangerous
the horse alfalfa and corn, would just cover the needs of a horse at rest, not of an athlete’s. NECESSITIES: Performance horses need greater amounts of Vitamin E due to oxidative stress caused by intense training. The need of Vitamin E becomes more than 2000 mg per day. It is advisable to supplement the horse athlete’s diet with vitamin E because the one found in cereals and hay doesn’t cover the needs of an endurance horse. DEFICIENCY: A deficiency of vitamin E is usually associated with Selenium deficiency due to selenium deficient soils. These deficiencies cause different symptoms: widespread oedema, adipose tissue inflammation, mare and stallion infertility but most of all oxidative damage of the nervous system and muscle fibers. One symtom the rider could be mainly aware of is generalized muscle weakness, stiff and short gait. Muscles that are used more than others are of course most subject to damage: limbs, muscles of mastication, cervical muscles and pharyngeal muscles. Pharyngeal muscles cause mastication and deglutition problems.
Horses seriously affected show a severe symtomatology, they have a neurologic deficit and decubitus...it’s the case of nutrition myodistrophy. SUPPLEMENTATION: it is very important to administer supplements to horses that cannot receive appropriate amounts of Selenium and Vitamin E, for example, stabled horses who cannot graze all year round. An endurance horse shouldn’t receive less than 2.5 or 3 grams of Vitamin E per day. Once the symptoms manifest, the treatment is less effective than if used as prevention. Egon E: complementary feed with a balanced concentration of Vitamin E and Selenium to balance deficient diets.

he 120 km CEI2* Custodian of the Two holy Mosques Endurance Cup, took place in Al Ula in the country of Saudi Arabia. The Endurance ride was the shining star of a greater event called the Winter Tantora Festival, an event that wishes to boost tourism in this beautiful and still unknown area of Saudi Arabia. The Tantora Festival was announced last December 2018 in Jedda by the Royal Commission for the Governorate of Al-Ula in the presence of Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan, Minister of Culture. The Tantora Festival included the Hot Air Balloon Festival, the Endurance Ride and one of the 8 concerts of the venture called “Stars un-
der the stars, the concert of the Italian singer and tenor Andrea Bocelli. Only 500 available tickets for a magic evening that left everybody gob-smacked.
THE PLACE Al Ula is a city in north-western Saudi Arabia characterized by a rich area of pink sand archaeological sites and immense rock sculptures of different shapes. The vertical sandstone cliffs surrounding AlUla provide ample surfaces for rock art, making it one of the richer petroglyph regions in the Kingdom.

Al ula, also known as Dedan, is located in the Medina Region; the walled city of Al ‘Ula was founded in the 6th century BC, an oasis in the desert valley, with fertile soil and plenty of water. It was located on the Incense Route, the network of routes that facilitated the trading of spices, silk and other luxury items through Arabia, Egypt and India.

THE RIDE The lucky riders coming from all over the world, challenged one another on a 120 km track, in this archeological site in Al Ula, a jewel city and Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage site. Everybody agreed that it has been an amazing and unforgettable ride organized in a magic landscape...it seemed like living in another space-time dimension. 76 out of 201 participants finished the race, proud of being the first ones to have ridden the first endurance ride ever in this beautiful area... probably the first one of a long series to come considering that we have noticed a lot of work going on. The UAE flag stood on the first 10 positions, as expected, followed by Bahrain, Uruguay, Oman, Saudi Arabia, France, Italy etc. Gold medal was conquered by the fast-

What is the Prestige Cup ? § 1 spectacular day of sport and entertainment § An Eco responsible international Endurance ride (CEI**) § 5 weeks before the European Championship in Euston Park (UK) § 100 top riders and horses § Some of the best tracks in the world § More than 15 nations invited § Entry fees refunded for all the finishers
How did you come up with the Prestige Cup? The inspiration for the Prestige Cup came from International Endurance Riders who wanted to run a new ride close to Paris, with flat tracks, during the summer. There are plenty of En-
durance races in Europe, so our intention is to offer a new kind of event with high level sport and entertainment, in an outstanding venue. We also wanted to combine high level sport and Eco responsibility to preserve the environment and sport fair-play. The Prestige Cup’s ambition is to become an annual notto-be-missed event for all endurance riders and for the region.
When and where could we attend the Prestige Cup? The Prestige Cup will be held on Sunday 7th of July 2019, all day. We have chosen the Chantilly Polo Club as main venue because it offers all the facilities that we need to organize an International Endurance ride. Moreover, riders and horses will have direct access to the tracks.

2018 key facts and figures ü 400 people on-site ü 11 nations ü 80 riders on the start line ü 126 km ride ü 40 finishers ü 22 FEI officials ü 11 exhibitors ü 40 organization staff ü 1st eco responsible ride in the world
What can we expect from a sports point of view? The Prestige Cup is a 2 star FEI ride over a 120 km distance. The ride will be divided in 4 loops which will cover 20 to 40km each. The Prestige Cup is the perfect opportunity for riders going to the European Championship (August 2019) to train in the run up to Euston Park (UK). Top conditions include access to canter along thoroughbred racing tracks. Alex Luque, winner of the 2018 Prestige Cup will fight to keep his title!
What makes the Prestige Cup different form other rides? Originality of the Prestige Cup is based on 3 commitments: § Eco-responsibility: Preservation of tracks and crossed green spaces / Reduction of environmental impact / Development opportunities for the region. § Fair Sport: A strict application of FEI rules / Sport integrity and fair play compliance. § Cost efficiency: Costs and resources optimization / Stimulation of endurance horses market / Promotion of equestrian endurance through a new and positive image. In 2018, the Prestige Cup was the 1st International Endurance ride in the World being labelled by Equures (Eco responsible label). The Prestige Cup is still the most richly endowed ride in France. All riders’ entries’ fees will be redistributed to the competitors as prize money.

TOUGHEST HORSE RACE IN THE WORLD CALLS FOR RIDERS!

N
ow in its third edition, Race the Wild Coast (RTWC) has rapidly become known as the toughest horse race on the planet. The event takes place from 19 to 27 October 2019 and only twenty riders compete in this prestigious limited-access event. RTWC is now open for global entries. This new breed of long-distance adventure horse racing is set amid the breathtaking scenery of the South African East Coast. Over the course of five days a host of experienced international riders, each riding three horses in the course of the race, will compete for victory over 350km of rugged paradise from Port Edward to Kei Mouth. RTWC blends the spirit of the frontiersman and the modern horseback adventurer – a test of endurance, horsemanship, survival and navigational skills.

ays race organizer and 2017 Mongol Derby winner, Barry Armitage: “RTWC is a complex multi-stage race, in which riders must brave this challenging wilderness and swim rivers while keeping horses fit for vet checks. It is no doubt the ultimate test of endurance and horsemanship for any long-distance rider!” This is indeed the case, as supported by the comments of RTWC veteran Stevie Murray (USA) made at the RTWC 2016 finish line: “When you’ve done the Mongol Derby you get to thinking that nothing will ever compare
again; I was wrong. RTWC is far more technically and physically challenging, and the hectic but breathtaking terrain has no comparison. I have never experienced such remote and enchanting beauty in all my life.” The event, produced by Rockethorse Racing, is sponsored by international sports apparel brand KTC Limited. The race is open to a global field and thus far, has caught the attention of competitors from the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, the United States, Canada, Mexico, Germany, Guatemala, South Africa and Australia. Last year’s event was won by British rider, Rosie Riall.

ccording to Armitage, the challenge should not be undertaken lightly. “Being physically fit is essential. There are some brutal hills on this ride and some of the river crossings are daunting, so being confident in water is a must,” he says. With around six major rivers that require deep-water swims, and the expectation of rain, conditions will test riders’ skills each step of the way. herefore, the endurance weekend in Fontainebleau can undoubtedly be considered as one of the first highlights of the 2019 endurance competition season in France. This major event took place at the Grand Parquet, a popular venue which served as hunting ground of the kings in former times and is nowadays dedicated to hosting highclass equestrian sport events year-round. Situated in the heart of the mythic forest of Fontainebleau, the Grand Parquet is widely acknowledged as one of the most beautiful competition sites in Europe among equestrian professionals. Moreover, the competitors of the different endurance competitions not only benefitted from the great competition site, but also enjoyed the well-prepared sandy tracks of the ancient forest of Fontainebleau, which is located about 50 km south of Paris. Besides its vast biodiversity, this magical forest is also famous for the unique sandstone rock formations, which attract climbers from all over the world. Gill Cabardos - Organizer

The competition weekend started on Friday, 22 March 2019 with the classical CEI *** & Ama Elite GP endurance ride over a 160 km distance. The participating 31 riders from eight different nations departed at 6 am in the morning mist and temperatures close to the freezing point on the first of the five loops. Only 17 riders were able to finish the amazing, but also challenging course, where long, sandy alleys alternated to more demanding tracks, asking the riders to watch out for some hidden roots, stones and spots within the deep sand. Charles Cappeau from France won the race with his self-bred horse Altair du Liaumies, a 9-year-old grey gelding which measures only 1,47 m, but, according to hisrider, is highly motivated. The couple mastered the ride with an average speed of 18.6 km/h and a final decisive loop of 21.5 km/h. The second place was accomplished by the French rider Nicolas Ballarin and Anir de la Teulière, who arrived only seconds before the Belgian rider Louna Schuiten and Sabah du Courtisot.
The “Crown Prince”: a dream come true At the beginning of the year, our attention was struck by Stefania Marchiano’s interesting story. She is a rider from Valle d’Aosta, registered in Piedmont. Stefania achieved the pass to Dubai thanks to the invitation of Marere Louka, a gelding owned by Luigi Borgis; she was the chosen one to run the prestigious H-H. Sh. Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Cup. It seemed like a dream, everything was proceeding as usual when the unexpected news showed up as a bolt from the blue. A small injury to Marere decides for everyone, nobody leaves! Fortunately, the horse was kept at rest for a recoverable problem. Stefania’s dream shattered with no hope left; but life goes on, horses are basically like children, beautiful and strong but fragile.

Time goes on as the bitterness of those days, but suddenly something totally unexpected happens: The doorbell rings, it’s Dubai again on the intercom. Now they want another horse, Barhein des Egas (Sadepers x Arvena), owned by the Eritrea Golden Star team and they want Stefania to ride it. The team, managed by Daniele Rusconi’s Jet Line Endurance, was invited to the Crown Prince Endurance Cup, one of the richest races in the world. This time Stefania decides to keep her feet on the ground, she doesn’t want to delude herself. She is well aware that in these situations the cards on the table may always change very quickly, even in the end. She immediately calls her best friend and boyfriend, looking for comfort and confirmation. Since then, many have supported her as many warned her about the difficulties she was going to face. Let’s read what Stefania herself declared: “I was excited, incredulous. I usually sleep peacefully but this time I couldn’t hide that certain anxiety that crept into me. The horse I had to ride was not in Italy but in the Czech Republic; since last August he had been training with Tereza Kopecka. I had already ridden him twice, first in Chantilly, then at Euston Park so, from this point of view, I was calm. I didn’t want to let my imagination run wild, at least not until I was on the flight to Dubai, certain that the horse I was about to meet was already active and fit in the desert. Finally there I was... the warm wind of the United Arab Emirates welcomed me and with it many Italian friends, no competition colleagues. It all happened quickly, I found myself competing in the desert straightaway, almost without any sleep, at the startingline of the Crown Prince! The team’s guideline was obviously to finish the race and keep an average speed of 16 km/ h. My assistance crew was the best I could ever ask for: Bahrein’s trainer Tereza Kopecka, my boyfriend Jean Paul Voyat and my dearest friend Michela Enrico, dressage rider and endurance rider respectively. While the driver was a true professional of the deserts! I am practically one of the last. My legs seemed to be stuck, I was tense, as if I were riding for the first time ... from the car they all urged me to

gallop rather than trot. After a while I relaxed, the horse found its rhythm and everything went smoothly. It wasn’t exactly a piece of cake, I was constantly thinking of the hundreds of bottles of water to grab, the annoying sand and diagonal changes but I did have a great time after all and, this is the most important thing. It has been a wonderful experience especially in terms of relationship with the other Italians. We supported each other, we exchanged our points of views and shared advices, shortly we felt part of a great team. I could not realize what was happening to me; I found myself catapulted amidst many friends who, nevertheless, ride by profession, or work for their own team and live on endurance. I do other things in the morning. I wear high heeled shoes to go to the office and, as soon as I can, I put on my endurance shoes; so it’s first and foremost a great passion for me, a sport, which has by now become a second job. Being with them was exciting, priceless... Now it is time to say thank you, while the memory of Barhein des Egas (who obviously remained in the UAE), is still alive! I thank the Golden Star Eritrea Team, Daniele Rusconi, my friend and my boyfriend, Tereza who gave me a very fit horse and also “Acavallo - Ideas for Horses”, my super technical sponsor. Thanks to Sport Endurance for the showcase and for having given me the opportunity to tell my story.

Now she attends an equestrian school and after almost a year of lessons, on the 24th of March, she ran her first pony endurance ride. If someone asks her what she wants to be when she grows up, she obviously replies a rider and a horse doctor. She moves me everytime I watch her ride...as if it were her first time Considerations It is comforting to witness new generations of endurance passionates sprout up. It is so exciting to think back on the many kids that you’ve watched grow up and have now become real endurance riders. We hope that the new riders will grow up with the highest sports values, respecting people, animals and everything around them.

The
successful Supek sisters
Young Slovak horse riders and twins Lucia Jun. Supekova and Michaela Supekova are two of the world’s elite riders, despite being only 19 years old. Their achievements speak for themselves – in 2017, Lucia Jun. Supekova became number one in the FEI Young Riders World Endurance Ranking and Michaela ended up sixth in the FEI Endurance Open Riders World Ranking. The year 2018 was another successful year for the two sisters. (photo: Lucia Supeková, Michaela Supeková, Lucia Jun. Supeková) Last year in July, you finished second at the juniors’ FEI European Championship in Pisa. This was the very first FEI medal for a Slovak horse rider, how did it feel? Michaela: It was an unforgettable race. Everything went according to our expectations. I rode the mare Girola de Quercus, she did an excellent job during the entire race and, in the last loop, she showed her strength and proved how good she was, so we won a great second place. Of course, I must thank the entire team for this medal. Michaela, even before winning the medal, you finished the seniors’ elite race in Slovakia in May; how did you feel about it? Michaela: To achieve the title of a senior elite rider, I competed on various continents and on 10 different horses. The fact that I won this title at home in Šamorín was a great honour and a beautiful feeling.
Lucia, we have already mentioned that 2017 was a very successful year for you, but you also performed well in 2018, for example in Africa. Lucia: Indeed. In August, Michaela and I, and our mother Lucia, competed at the African Championship in Walvis Bay, Namibia. I won third place in the junior category and, naturally, I was very happy about it. In the seniors’ competition, Michaela ended up sixth and our mum seventh, so it was a great race for all three of us. (1 photo: Michaela in Africa, 2 photo: Lucia Supeková) You mentioned your mother. Last year, you competed at the World Championship for Young Horses in Šamorín, Slovakia, where Michaela ended up sixth and your mother seventh and you crossed the finish line holding hands, which must have felt awesome. Michaela: It was a beautiful feeling to cross the finish line holding hands with my mum. I was very happy about our success, it’s one of the most beautiful moments of the last year’s season. However, I was sad that Lucia did not cross the line with us. She was a bit unlucky on that day as her horse lost his shoe in the second loop and it cost her a lot of time. So, she finished in 13th place, which is nevertheless a good result. (photo: Michaela with her mother in Slovakia)
Lucia and Michaela Supekova
What about 2019, how did it start for you? Michaela: Basically, we didn’t even have a break between seasons. At the end of December and at the beginning of January, we were in the UAE, in Dubai, to compete in the HH Sh. Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Endurance Cup, where we competed with our mother again. I was the only one to compete throughout the whole festival, which is a series of 4 races (Ladies CEN 119km, Private stables CEN 119km, Mares CEN 119km, CEI*** 160km), so I consider this a success at the very beginning of this year. (photo: Lucia in UAE)
Lucia Jun.Supekova
Have you competed anywhere since then and with what results? Lucia: Yes, in February, we competed in Abu Dhabi the HH The President of the UAE Cup, and my sister and I both finished it successfully. In March, we competed in the Dubai Crown Prince Cup, where Michaela and our mum rode their own horses transported from Europe (gelding F C Husein and mare RO Vedette) and they both successfully made it to the finish line. I also did, but I rode a local horse.
Young horses team
Lucia Supeková
What is your next race? Or are you going to have a break? Michaela: Our next race is going to take place at Šamorín, which is the first race this season in Slovakia. We always look forward to races at home, it’s a very good flat track, and it’s very familiar to us and our horses, because we train here. Spring weather is very good and beneficial for our horses and for us. Lucia: After the Šamorín race, we will be finishing our high school exams, so, once the race ends, we will be focusing mainly on that Do you have time for school and other activities? Lucia: Our entire year is centred around horses and preparation for races. We also prepare in the gym, so we don’t have much time and energy left. However, we still need to find time for school and, occasionally, we go out with friends or to the movies. So yes, we sometimes have time for activities not related to horses.
