discipline stamina fitness and patience the supreme test of horsemanship

Interview with Mr.

StĂŠphane Chazel appointed new FEI Endurance Technical Committee member 2

SPORT ENDURANCE EVO

S

port Endurance Evo magazine passed the mic to Mr. Chazel just after his nomination: The French rider, trainer and breeder, Stéphane Chazel (1968), makes his entrance in the FEI Endurance Committee. He was appointed for a four year term, following the decision taken by the FEI Bureau in Tokyo on 19 November 2016. Mr. Chazel is replacing the outgoing member Khalid Ahmed Hasan (BRN). Mr. Chazel comes from a family of breeders and riders of Arabian horses, the new Committee member has always been passionate about endurance riding. He was involved for 20 years in this discipline and gave an important contribution to its evolution and regulations within many organizations in France, such as CNREE, ACA, SHF and CREE. In addition, he organized FFE and FEI Endurance events in a 10 year lapse, while in the past five years he has largely contributed to the development of Endurance riding in China. What is the first proposal that you would like to submit in FEI? Work towards a new categorisation method for endurance events: let me explain. What makes for the difficulty and the level of a competition is neither the distance nor the terrain! It is the level of the contestants present and therefore the speed at which they will tackle the terrain and distance in question! I believe that the categories of our events can no longer simply be divided up on the basis of distance. We need to think up competitions involving competitors of comparable status. What’s your opinion regarding speed reduction in races like Bouthieb? I believe the” Bouthieb” protocol could be relevant for the qualifying circuit of our horses and to teach novice riders about the discipline. But it is NOT my idea of our sport. Our sport is a simple one: “Endurance riding is the competition between one horse-one rider pairs over a designated long distance course (160 km), in the SHORTEST time possible, with the emphasis on HORSE WELFARE!” But the unlimited speed contests of less than 120 km are not instructive, they are not educational either for young or novice riders and do not contribute to the making of future endurance horses! We must maintain a speed

Stéphane Chazel, new member of the FEI Endurance Commmittee

limit on our 80- or 100-km competitions to educate both horses and riders. How is it then that the least experienced riders and the youngest horses are the ones who compete over the shortest distances, at the fastest and therefore most dangerous speeds? I don’t have problem with high speed, until its reach by horse/ rider with the experience, maturity, level to do it! What’s the future of endurance riding? The FEI and the NFs are federations of riders, of athletes! Careful of the drift towards a more professional sport, tuned more towards training yards, like gallop racing. Such a shift is a possibility but one must accept the consequences… Like in horseracing! Why not? But this is very far from the idea whereby endurance is considered as a test of: Discipline, stamina, fitness and patience. The supreme test of horsemanship...

T

ORGNON’s charming atmosphere is hard to express if you’ve never experienced it yourself but we will give it a try. This small and welcoming mountain town could be compared to a natural sunny terrace located in the

Cervino Valley, in the Aosta Valley. The location is pleasant and in the summertime you can enjoy a wonderful microclimate. The endurance event took place under the shadow of the fifth top of the Alps that boasts an altitude of 4.478 m. The days skimmed through in a very friendly and sport environment. To greet anyone you meet on the way, is a habit of all mountain trekkers, the same thing happens here in Torgnon even if you’re having a walk downtown. A healthy competitive spirit coexists with a peaceful atmosphere.

ACME’S ENDURANCE TOUR

I-Duro ACME, the technical support of the 6 stage MiPAAF Endurance circuit, ended its tour on Follonica’s Finals Day. ACME’s purpose was to propagate the knowledge of a healthy/balanced diet and the understanding of the real needs of the endurance horse athlete, employed in this wonderful but demanding discipline. Before taking up this route, ACME deepened its knowledge in order to give birth to two important products specifically meant for equestrian endurance: I-duro and Reidrata Led. The company’s mission is to promote the welfare of the horse: a good and balanced nutrition is definitely one of the most important requisites for a healthy and fit athlete. Nutrition guarantees that physical effort necessary to run 100 km.

During each stage of the circuit, that crossed some of the most beautiful regions of Italy, ACME organized seminars on the evening previous to the race. The seminars were attended by veterinarians, riders and specialists in the field. Photos of several horses, before and after treatment with I-duro, have been compared. The audience was enthusiastic of this new method of study through images and ACME was satisfied of the job carried out throughout this 8 month tour. Results were evident in this endurance season... many Best Condition titles have been awarded to horses fed with ACME products. This clearly shows that good results have been achieved not only from a physical point of view but also in terms of a proportional development of muscle mass, tone and shiny

Reidrata Led coat.Physiological and metabolic parameters are valued at vet gates and during the final vet check at the end of a race. In endurance riding, to reach the finish line first doesn’t mean winning the race in fact, if the horse doesn’t prove to be fit and sound he’s not the winner. This proves that a good nutrition positively affects health. ACME products led to physical and metabolic suitability and guaranteed the best parameters to all horses. This means that all the basic necessities of the horse athlete have been adequately satisfied. 8 long and demanding months for ACME that concluded this experience under the pouring rain in Follonica, always ready and determined to give advices with the same energy showed at the beginning of the tour.

F

lorac is without doubt one of the toughest races in the world. The darkness of morning, the mountains and sometimes wild nature, are only few of the aspects that make the riders shiver. We have spoken about the venue, the race and Florac’s audience many times before, that said, we’ll give the floor to Robert Diez Noguera and Jordi Arboix, the winners of the 160 and 140 km CEI3* respectively. Congratulations to Jean Marie Conchou and Eole Rider for winning the CEI2*.

SPORT ENDURANCE EVO

Everybody’s dream is to win Florac’s CEI3* ride... how did you succeed? Did you expect this result? In your opinion, what is the most difficult section of Florac’s racecourse? Besides Florac, what’s your other important objective... any other race to conclude and why?

F

lorac has always been a dream for me since I was a child: run it and maybe win it. This year I’ve made it! As I was running the last loop I thought about the races I used to dream of, trying to figure out how real champions managed to win such a tough race.

Interview with

Robert Diez Noguera the winner of the 160 km CEI3* ride

1st CEI3* Robert Diez Noguera with Sunit du Colombier

Before running Florac with the great horse Sunit du Colombier (Tauqui El Masan X Primera) I was wondering about which race to choose among the toughest ones and how to train the horse for such a challenge. After this year’s training sessions and hard work I knew we could achieve a good result. It was only in the third loop that I realised it was going to be Sunit’s good day...Florac is definitely a hard ride. Florac’s track can be a fast one but it’s also very technical. This year, while training on the first loop, very early at night, I spent moments running without light...I couldn’t practically see anything. The difficulty of running a race in the dark is to figure out which way to go in order to gain speed and pick the best ground. When I asked my horse to go faster in the last loop, he amazed me... he was not tired at all and enjoyed going faster and faster. Every year my objective is to select the best races in Europe, run them and try to do the best result possible. I would like to thank all the owners that trust our work in endurance Vilatella, conscious that they could trust us more and expect the best results around Europe. My second objective would be to run next year’s European Championship with a very good horse and do our best. Furthermore, I would like to run the Tevis Cup: but that’s a different race. I think that all professional riders should run the hardest races in the world. I must also say that during this ride I met a lot of good horses and nice riders. I dedicate this victory to all the special people in my life Thank you

Interview with

Jordi Arboix the winner of the 140 km ride

Jordi won Florac’s 140 km ride. A Spanish rider on Sasha d’Aillais (unknow origins) ahead of all the French ones...definitely a special year to be remembered by Spain. What kind of preparation do you need in order to face Florac’s racecourse?

W

ell, 6 days before Florac, I won the 160 km ride in Monpazier with Rieden; one week in France and 2 victories...yes, it’s a special year, but I think that the big change for Spanish riders occured in 2014, when we won gold medal at the WEG in Normandy and Juma and I finished in fifth and sixth individual place respectively. The preparation for Florac with Sasha d’Aillais (under 5) lasted 8 years. It began with the 120 km ride in Windsor which was quite an experience not for the distance but in terms of travelling, stress, loneliness, crowd, boats, trucks, trailers, etc.

12

SPORT ENDURANCE EVO

In that occasion the horse placed 11th. The winner horse wasn’t property of the Emirates, he ran the last loop at 25.6 km/h in a very comfortable way; after that I had to continue training, changing the preparation in order to face a completely different race. In Windsor the track was quite comfortable but technical, running on a hilly terrain is something different but difficult too. As years go by Florac is losing more and more starters, why? I don’t really know, the race has modernized Florac in all its aspects, it is more attractive than many other races in the world and it’s got a lot of sponsors. So I think it could only be due to the great number of races concentrated between August and September, and not to any other factor. While the success of Spanish riders is due to the hard and good work carried out in the region of Catalonia (VIC) where the most popular riders come from.

T

he horse week-end set between September and October offered plenty of emotions for eyes and mind. The amazing autumnn colors and vivid nature of Parco Sigurtà, known as the second most beautiful park in Europe, brought to a relaxing 2 day sport event. Whoever visited it knows what it’s all about, for those who have never been here before we suggest to take a walk across its green tree-lined paths.

16

SPORT ENDURANCE EVO

The weather offered wonderful sunny summer days and just a few raindrops splashing here and there on the last day of the event. All the above mentioned features and the quality of the racecourse led to selecting Valeggio as the best location to host the World Endurance Championships for Young Horses 2017. Valeggio’s racecourse was fast but technical at the same time due to different types of ground: a hard and straight track along the river and beautiful trails across the vineyards, typical of these hilly landscapes.

M

y name is Stefanie Arnold, I’m 35 years old and it is a pleasure for me to tell you my story. The first time I visited the UAE was in 2002, I was my two cousins’groom at the President Cup, in Abu Dhabi. In 2005 I visited Dubai for the World Endurance Championship. I was there to support my sister Rebecca who was running the race. She ran the 160 km ride

30

SPORT ENDURANCE EVO

with our family horse Zahib. During that second stay I met a lot of friends. I visited the UAE again several times and ran some races in the desert. In 2010 I decided to leave Germany in order to embrace a new experience and a different life in the UAE. Every new beginning is tough especially in a country where culture, religion, language and rules are totally different from the ones in your country. Slowly, I understood how life goes in Dubai.

started working as school secretary at the German International school in Dubai. I worked from Sunday to Thursday, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. I soon realized that something was missing in my life. What I missed most was a horse, riding and some fun. In September 2012 I had the chance to bring

32

our family horse Zahib to Dubai...this changed my life completely. Now I had someone waiting for me after work. I used to change my clothes immediately after work and drive directly to the stable. My house was too far away and considering that sunset was at 6 p.m. I really had no time to go back home to change.

In March 2014 we completed the 120 km CEI2* Crown Prince Cup in Dubai. At that time Zahib was 19 years old and was fit and sound. One year later my new young 3 year old boy Perys flew to Dubai. With him I ran a 40 km and 80 km ride twice and now he’s ready for his first 80 km CEI*ride in the UAE.

Thank you everybody for reading my story and thank you Sport Endurance Evo for this special interview. I wish you all a happy, healthy and successful new 2017. Take care of yourselves and your horses. Best regards.

his edition was very special... we missed its creator Pierre Passemard who passed away last December. He was involved in our sport and initiated a lot of endurance societies: CNRE (ComitÊ National des Raids Equestres) in France and ELDRIC (Equestrian Long Distance Riding International Committee) in Europe. For 40 years, his philosophy remained unchanged, aiming at the welfare of the horse and regularity in endurance performances. This year’s innovations were: the partnership with Meydan and Styria team timing system. The track, that consisted in 95 km per day

across the hills and the vineyards of the Cahors area, remained unchanged too. On day 1 the ride began from Montcuq, proceeded to Castelnau-Montratier, Labastide Marnhac and back to Montcuq. On day 2 it started from Montcuq, proceeded to Le Boulvé, Labastide-Marnhac and back to Montcuq. The special thing was that each vetgate area was located on the main square of each village. The other particularity was that the track was set up to test the ability of a horse over a 100 mile distance. Statistically speaking, a horse unable to finish the ride in Montcuq has very few chances to

succeed in other 160 km races. This year, 52 riders ran the race: 48 from France, 2 from Italy and 2 from the Netherlands. After the preride inspection, 51 riders were at the starting-line on saturday morning. Karine Mabilon with Rihad la Majorie were in the lead on day 1. After gate inspection on Sunday morning, 41 started and after the two main difficulties of the track, 28 classified in Montcuq. Only one fly in the ointment: on Sunday morning a group of hunters had a lot of fun taking off the markings of the track, for this reason the leader, Karine Mabilon lost her way.

uckily, the motorbike riders opening the ride, who were also policemen, caught the hunters red-handed. After a meeting, the jury decided to give 10 minutes back to Karine Mabilon. Franck Laousse won the ride with the Australian mare Charlotte TA at an average speed of 17, 37 km/h. The last horse to be classified was Aljaroi de Bozouls with Virginie Caillaud that ran at 13, 9 km/h. ollonica is a small town of about 21,000 inhabitants. It overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea and has a mild Mediterranean climate. The favourable weather allowed

SPORT ENDURANCE EVO

the Organizing Committee of Follonica Endurance to organize an endurance race right in the middle of winter when in other parts of Italy the first snowflakes were starting to fall.

iorgio Parenti, Katia Carnevale and the whole staff of Follonica Equitando have chosen the right path once again, organizing another successful Endurance Follonica, an international competition that this year included MIPAAF Young Horses races and added prize listed by ANICA too. Between the 18th and 19th of November, the Ippodromo dei Pini located in the province of Grosseto welcomed more than 150 binomials from different European countries. It took two editions only to turn this race into a very requested one, a sign that riders from all

over Europe really appreciate this racetrack. Despite a little rain, the 2 day competition, Follonica Endurance 2016 lived up to the riders’ expectations. The ground was good and the technical track left room for interpretation. Through the microphones of Sport Endurance Evo, the Organizing Committee wished to express special thanks to the sponsors that made this event possible, the local institutions, the Righi Family, the Morris Company, the Hotel and Golf Resort Il Pelagone and all the technical brands: ACME, AVIA Saddle, BURIONI, UNIKA, SETZI Saddle, SG Horses and TERRE di PAPENA.

Silver medal to Simona Garatti on Grisu dell’Orsetta (Indian Jamik x Formila), who won best condition title in the

160 km CEI3* in Vittorito (AQ). Bronze medal for Adelaide Scola on Ta Sharab (Shirzal Lm x Arabel by Dashar) a bay PSA of 2004 who placed second in the 2 day ride in Torgnon. The challenging CEI2* ran by 46 binomials was won by Jacopo di Matteo with Lys du Cammas (Milora Park Blue Fire x Zena del Tarter) bay Arabian female of 2005. The rider from Abruzzo left behind riders like Marion Wasilewski from France on Qansra du Croate (Dormane x Chtana) and the Italian 2015 champion Daniele Serioli on Moma (Caligola x Dolianova).

here is no need to talk about stories and race tactics, Fabio Zuccolo’s extensive sheets published on Enduranceonline leave no doubt and respond to all the questions. This race run over a 120 km distance is not an international competition only but it includes the MIPAAF too, an Italian championship for 7 year old horses won by Bruno Mollo on Qassia Distinta (Distintu x Flor De May) that this year stood out by winning the CEI1* and the title of Best Condition in Torgnon and the CEI2* in Travagliato (BS) followed by Matteo Bravi on Wild Fira (second place) and Patrizia Cianferoni on Quintana (third place) that are in sixth, seventh and eighth place in the general ranking respectively. The same category, but reserved for YR went to the transalpine rider Camille Coulomb on Cesar de Suleiman in front of two Bosana horses that are Torba and Carpino taking orders from Federica Fulcini and Ilaria Cella. The one star race went to Benedetto Arena, riding Manjio.

to the French female rider Coulomb, the winner of the CEI2YR* with Cesar du Suleiman

B

efore the interview she says with a laugh: “I have half his age and he gave me a beautiful victory” After winning the CEIYR2* in Follonica, we spoke with Camille Coulomb in order to know who she is and other interesting details. Camille – “I am a French 18 year old rider. The horse I raced with in Follonica has half my age, he’s a 9 year old stallion with an exceptional heart, has always been very strong and very fast on the track but his best features are his intelligence and docility. Cesar is my favorite horse, and in him I put trust for a lot of my projects. Follonica was not my first race in Italy, I had already raced in Valeggio sul Mincio (Vr) on the occasion of the World Championship for Young Horses last year.

64

SPORT ENDURANCE EVO

I thoroughly enjoyed the Follonica race, finding the province very technical but really exciting. Shame about the rain, the beautiful sunshine would have exalted the typical Tuscan landscapes. The location of the race is very cozy and charming just like the organization... Super !! I will definitely come back ... my dream is to represent my country one day in an international competition, and who knows, maybe Cesar could help me with it. Horses are my passion but not my job, probably in the future it will be so, but for now I will focus on what I’m doing. I want to do well, continue running without forgetting study which is the fundamental for everybody’s life. I want to take Sport Endurance EVO’s opportunity to thank Jean Philippe Frances and Sabrina Arnold who are doing a lot for my racing career”.

ver 100 lady riders will start in the HH Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies Endurance Cup, a Two-star FEI 120 km event held at the Emirates International Endurance Village in Al Wathba, Abu Dhabi, on November 26, 2016. In front of HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum and HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, two Italian riders dominated the race with a first and third place finish. Veronica Simula riding the 13-year-old mare Poets Corner Zsa Zsa won the ride in 4 hours 29 minutes and 10 seconds.

All three lady riders were given the keys to a 4WD each for their winning performance. These events are intended to prepare the riders for the big rides: the HH President’s Cup and the HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Cup.” “The riders did a very good job and they have strictly observed the rules and regulations. It is now an international event and more commitment to the international rules will be required to progress further in this regard” HH Sheikh Mansoor said.

IRENE... this podium is dedicated to you

B

efore having a little chat with Giulia Vigevani, she pointed out that herself and Veronica Simula dedicated the podium to their friend Irene Avitabile who is always on their mind. Super Italian power, is it just a coincidence or are we conquering the desert too? Speaking of Endurance riding and Horse racing, the number of Italians working in the desert has recently increased but we’ll have to wait the end of the agonistic season to draw our conclusions. How is life in the UAE ? Is this long experience fruitful? I really enjoy living in the UAE, I’m getting used to it and it’s becoming my second home: I often miss the UAE when I travel to other countries. Be honest...what do you miss most about Italy? Well, my family and friends of course. I miss telling my best friend the latest news while sharing a cup of coffee..., I miss all these little, ordinary things. I miss my horses a lot...being away I can’t really take care of them as much as I would. Give us a brief description of your and Veronica’s race. My aim was to qualify Ankara (bay female of 2007) in her first 120 km ride. I wanted to keep a good average speed but without risking and most of all trying to make her reach the finish line in good conditions. We managed to keep a good average speed till the third loop and the horse was fit for the last loop so I decided to speed up

a little and she literally took off, running at an average speed of 30.667 in the last phase (the fastest speed, she began the last loop in 12th position, 15 minutes behind the leading rider but she reached the finish line third, 6 minutes after the winner), overtaking more than 9 horses. Ankara kept the same attitude she had at the beginning of the race, straight ears and a great attention to the surrounding environment. Veronica’s race was a bit different...her aim was to win and she was among the leading riders from the very beginning. She was first in the last loop and crossed the finish line with Poet Cornes Zsa Zsa (grey female of 2003) after running the last 20 km alone.

ersicko was born in 1989 from the famous Persik (Kankan x Pamiatka), a horse that was born 20 years before him giving birth to one of the strongest blood lines in the world of endurance riding and to Alreda. The Arabian bay stallion left this world a few months ago but his sons are worthy of his blood. StÊphane Chazel and the team of Al Barake Breeding, wished to give him a public farewell, remembering some of his best sons who are still in circulation. I would definitely start from Shaddad, today Quersick Niellans (Persicko x Balsane de Boron). He won the President Cup of Abu Dhabi in 2016, ridden by Sh. Rashid Dalmook Juma Hamed Al Maktoum at the average speed of 26.06 km/h!!! Then there’s Teotihuacan des Greys (Persicko x Nazouck) that won the French Championship with Laetitia Goncalves (National Championship Argentan 2015)

ver the years many athletes have faced this demanding race, appreciating the beautiful and unusual landscape of the Abruzzo region. A very experienced Organizing Team supported by the technical know-how of local people (Alpine Guides, Experts of the National Park, Alpine Rescue, volunteers, doctors, training and security experts) led to a structured race regulation. This Decalogue shows athletes, or simply passionates, how to compete on mountain paths according to safety standards and in respect of nature. The final victory was achieved by the strong National Team of Spain. Second place for Japan and third podium position for the Czech Republic. Among the young sky runners (16 – 23 years old) a round of applause goes to: Paula Cabrerizo Cuevas 41’59(VK) and 3h09’07 (SKY)(ESP), Hannes Perkmann 35’46(ITA) in the Vertical Kilometer racing and Ruy Ueda 2h31’03(JAP) in the Skyrace.
