Dear Readers, Happy Holidays! Welcome to the winter edition of the Sports and Activities Directory. We hope you are starting to enjoy the cooler weather and all the wonderful decorations and scents of the holiday season. There are so many events taking place around town and in the schools, please look through our extensive list and take advantage of these wonderful activities. The Parkland Farmer’s Market starts again this month and runs every other week until the end of April. Take a trip to the market and pick up some fresh organic fruits and veggies, taste some yummy fish dips and cider doughnuts and have your dog meet up with other dogs for a friendly playdate. Join in the December fun and experience the holidays through a city parade featuring our own schools marching bands, dancers and other talents. We will also have school shows, Winter in the Springs, light up the park at Pine Trails Park, and other events showcasing the holiday spirit. A new year is beginning and therefore there are new sign-ups for many sports; spring baseball, basketball, flag football and a return of the Parkland Girls’ Softball league. This has been a popular Parkland feature and we are so excited for its return. Looking for a new hangout for you and the kids? Look no further than the newly renovated Paragon movie theater in Coral Springs, right outside the mall. This place has completely redone the décor and is now ready to open its doors early next year. Get ready for an affordable, family friendly place that is comfortable, fun and accommodating for parties, events and date night. Coral Springs and Parkland are so lucky to have fabulous business people, teachers, students and organizations that try to make a difference in the lives of those in need. In this edition we feature Amy Tarte’s organization, Tarte’s Hearts, which is dedicated to having students help others in need while trying to improve their own self-image. We have seen first-hand the power that animals have in reducing stress and soothing those in pain. Forest Glen Middle school has incorporated pet therapy into their peer counseling program and has seen amazing results. We have been lucky enough to partner with the Children’s Services Council whose main goal is to help children receives all the tools they need to thrive in school and beyond. We wish all of you a wonderful holiday season and a Happy and Healthy New Year. We hope you are able to take some time to enjoy this magical time of year with friends and family while making wonderful memories to cherish.
My best to you,
Kim

Dear Readers,
8
As November begins, Election Day is upon us. Early voting continues from 7am-7pm through November 4, at the P-REC in Pine Trails Park. If you are registered to vote in Broward County, you just need to bring your license to vote there. Election Day is November 6. Polls are open from 7am7pm, but you must vote at your designated polling place. If you are not sure where you should vote on Election Day, you can look up the information on the Broward Supervisor of Elections website at www.browardsoe.org. The ballot is very long this year and contains many amendments, do your homework before you go to the polls. You can view a sample ballot on the Broward Supervisor of Elections website. The wait is over! Parkland’s famous Farmer’s Market is back starting on November 4, from 9am-1pm at the Equestrian Center! On November 18, December 2 and December 16 there will also be a craft fair at the Farmer’s Market. On January 6, the Parkland Farmer’s Market will also include a health and wellness fair. Make sure you don’t miss out on the delicious foods and goodies at the market. Veterans Day is a special holiday, in November, when we honor all those who served in our armed forces. We are all grateful for their service to our country and their selflessness. They have dedicated themselves and sacrificed so much for our country and our freedoms. Please join us at the Parkland Amphitheater on November 11 at 5:00pm, for Parkland’s Veterans Day Ceremony to honor our Veterans. Every year, the Interfaith Coalition of Coral Springs and Parkland hosts a PreThanksgiving Interfaith Unity Service. At this service, clergy and people from all different faiths come together to give thanks. It is a wonderful service that reminds us that we are all connected and that we are all in this together. Given what our community has been through this year, we need this more than ever. This year’s service will be on Tuesday, November 20, at 7:00pm at Temple Beth Orr in Coral Springs. I hope you will be able to join us as a way to kick off the Thanksgiving holiday. It has been an extremely difficult year for so many members of our community. Many are still suffering and for others it has been easy to get caught up in negativity. I am incredibly grateful for the many amazing, caring, hardworking residents throughout Parkland who regularly give back, work hard to make a difference and make our city such a wonderful place to live. It is the people who help out and work toward solutions in spite of difficulties and obstacles who truly make a difference. They show us all what resilience means. With our hectic schedules, it’s not often we have any extra time in our days. Thankfully, we “fall back” and pick up an extra hour on November 4. Don’t forget to set your clocks back. In these coming months take some moments to stop, take a breath, notice the good things around you and think about what you’re thankful for. Wishing you and your family a very happy holiday season and a wonderful New Year filled with health and happiness! If you have any questions or concerns, you can always reach me at chunschofsky@cityofparkland.org. I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely,
Mayor Christine Hunschofsky City of Parkland

Dear Readers,
12
I am very proud to announce that the 2019 Annual Budget and Business Plan for the City of Coral Springs was passed unanimously by the City Commission. This is our City’s “community contract” for the coming fiscal year. I encourage residents and businesses to stay informed. You can review the Annual Budget online at coralsprings.org/budget. I, along with my fellow City Commissioners, recognize the importance and civic responsibility of voting in the General Election on November 6. In addition to casting your vote for elected officials, there are many important Amendments on the ballot this year which may have a direct impact on the City of Coral Springs. First is the Amendment 1 Resolution. This proposed Amendment increases the Homestead Exemption by exempting the assessed value of homestead property greater than $100,000 and up to $125,000 for all tax levies, other than school district levies. One senior Senator said all this Amendment is meant to accomplish is to either retain fewer local services or need higher taxes. Amendment 1 isn’t a tax cut, it’s a tax shift. In addition to the Amendment 1 Resolution, Broward County’s Penny Surtax is also on the ballot. The approval of this ballot initiative would fund much needed infrastructure in our City including: drainage, resurfacing, sidewalks, adaptive traffic signal controls, necessary school zone improvements and increased public transportation. It is important for all residents to educate themselves on these and all ballot initiatives before heading to the polls on November 6. For a list of voting locations in Coral Springs, visit coralsprings.org/election. One the most honorable things I am able to participate in while serving as the Mayor of Coral Springs is to partake in the City’s Veterans Day Ceremony. This year it will be held on Sunday, November 11 at 10:45 a.m. at Veterans Park (located at 8601 Royal Palm Blvd., just east of University Drive). Bring your entire family, wear patriotic colors and join us in honoring the brave men and women who served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Fall fun is still underway in Coral Springs with the Farmers’ Market, which returned to the Artwalk with a great selection of local produce and events for kids. In addition, our popular Bites-N-Sips Food Truck event is returning to the Great Lawn of City Hall on Friday, November 16 from 6-10 pm. With an expanded selection of food vendors and entertainment, this is a fun-family event you will not want to miss. I wish you and your family a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving Holiday. As I reflect on the events of the past year, I am truly humbled and thankful to serve as the Mayor of such a compassionate and caring community. I look forward to celebrating the Holiday Season with residents at “Downtown in December” and the Annual Holiday Parade! If you would like to meet with me to discuss City issues, feel free to visit during my office hours. I hold office hours the second Tuesday of every month from 4 to 6 p.m. at City Hall in the City Commission Office. To make an appointment, please call 954-344-5911. I encourage you to follow the City of Coral Springs official Facebook and Twitter pages to remain up-to-date about news and events in our community. Sincerely,
Mayor Skip Campbell City of Coral Springs

nspiration, dedication and motivation. These are the characteristics instilled and expected by South Florida Cloggers, Rebecca Vetter and Lora Kuehn. These two women are the heart and soul behind the South Florida Cloggers. Located in Davie, these professional dancers teach all types of dance, to all ages and ability levels, hoping to develop dance skills, build self-confidence and foster friendships. Each week their 60+ students gain first-hand knowledge about clogging. This true American dance stems from the Appalachian Mountains and revolved around banjo music. It has become modernized and incorporates many dance forms: hip hop, country western, Irish, cheerleading and all types of music. This dance is performed by wearing special shoes that include a tap jingle on the toe and the heel. Moms and daughters, teens and preschoolers have been clogging in Davie, with Rebecca and Lora since 2011. Shows are performed weekly and summers are spent working on demanding routines to perform in major venues including Disney, out of state fairs and the Daytona Beach Clogging Convention. The students and the teachers enjoy the dance as well as bonding with performers from all over the world. Last year, after the Parkland massacre, Rebecca and Lora felt lost and needed to put their feelings of despair into a positive message for their students and themselves, hence creating Dance for Change. Dance for Change is a video, compiled by Rebecca and Lora’s students, to help bring awareness to issues facing our elementary students, teens and women of today. The
main message was to show that we can be positive even when faced with adversity. The video was a huge time commitment and was emotionally and technically challenging but so rewarding for all involved. The topics tackled were bullying, self-image, the #Metoo movement and ended with an inspirational dance surrounding a young singer with Alopecia. Each dancer chose to wear a word that described them best while surrounding this struggling but beautiful young woman with love and admiration. Rebecca and Lora spent many hours teaching the choreography, finding the right music, developing the skits and putting the video together. The video has been viewed by thousands, throughout many states across the US and countries around the world. Dance for Change brought Rebecca and Lora some peace. This project was so meaningful to them. It gave them a platform to reach so many while sharing vital information and hoping to inspire change. The girls in the video were so motivated to dance and perform to help themselves and others. Rebecca and Lora are very proud of their students and hope their video goes viral to give hope and strength to people throughout the world. Clogging has brought such joy to so many and Rebecca hopes that the video is shown on Ellen and brings the students to perform in larger venues like America’s Got Talent and So You Think You Can Dance. They have big dreams for their performers, and why not? If you can dream it, you can achieve it and these women are providing the perfect environment to shape many future stars.

It is based on a culture of inclusion, support and fellowship, through training, racing, and social interaction. In only one season, we have grown to 75 athletes strong, thanks to support of the membership and its generous sponsors. Fort Lauderdale Triathletes is an official USAT (USA Triathlon) and IRONMANTM TriClub team. Members enjoy regular clinics/socials and “voluncheering” for each other and the tri-community at large. All members receive discounts from the sponsors and on select endurance races. Find out more at www. fltri.com, or on Facebook (Fort Lauderdale Triathletes).
WOMEN FOR TRI (FLT LADIES)

CHALLENGER LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL
Challenger Baseball started in Broward County in 1990. The Challenger program is open to children with any disability. Thanks to the help of coaches, assistant coaches and “buddies”, all our players get to hit, field and get around the bases. Challenger is a non-competitive environment with the goal of all our players getting a chance to be part of a team sport and having a great time. Thanks to private sponsors our program is no cost to the families involved. We provide uniforms, equipment, pictures, trophies, a day at a Marlin’s game, a weekend in Ft Myers playing other Challenger teams, a year end picnic for all the families and more. Again, all these activities are provided at no charge. Although our target age group is 5-22 years old, many of our players are older as they have been in our program since the early years. Therefore, we now have a junior division from 5/12 years old and a senior division of 13+.Our games are Sunday afternoons at 3:30- 5:15 from March- May. We play at fields throughout Broward County so our players have home and away games. We presently play at fields in Coral Springs, Margate, Tamarac, Sunrise, Weston and Pembroke Pines. New players are always welcome. Challenger is also always looking for new sponsors and people interested in helping to run our program. Challenger is an all-volunteer organization and 100% of donated money goes directly to the program. REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN! For more information please contact Randy Hibshman (954) 345-9329. THE FRIENDSHIP INITIATIVE
Started in 2011, the mission of The Friendship Initiative (TFI) is to develop and grow programs, which enable children with special needs and typical children to learn from each other and connect as friends and to build the nation’s first, totally inclusive community park. TFI is committed to raising the funds necessary to support this mission. For more information about these programs, please contact Jeb Niewood at Jeb@thefriendshipinitiative.org or by calling Jeb at (954) 464-6078 and visit www.thefriendshipinitiative.org, and The Friendship Initiative Facebook page. We are currently providing 3 unique programs. • ROCK DREAMS: At Rock Dreams, children and young adults with special needs (whom we call Rock Stars) come to sing and dance in groups, moving between activity areas that include keyboards, guitars, percussion, and vocals. Each Rock Star is paired with his or her own student volunteer (whom we call a Roadie). The program is run in a fun and compassionate environment with the goal of each Rock Star enjoying the experience individually and within the group. • FIT FRIENDS: Fit Friends is designed for children and young adults with special needs who want to increase stamina and body tone. The program’s focus is on whole-body fitness and living a healthy lifestyle. Each participant is matched with a trained student volunteer. The programs begin with a light dynamic warm up that includes stretching. Each child then engages in aerobic circuit training and strength circuit training for each session. Exercise routines within the circuits are varied for each of the sessions, which are offered once a week for 8 weeks. • ART WORKS: At Art Works, children and young adults with special needs express themselves using a variety of art forms and techniques. Each session allows participants to explore different media including: clay, paint, pastels, markers, pencil, etc. Each Artist is paired with their own student volunteer. The program, run in coordination with Art Paper Scissors, at their studio in Parkland, is a fun-filled hour set in a compassionate environment that encourages exploration and creativity while improving fine motor skills. Through this creative process, social interaction occurs organically between the artists and the student volunteers. • READING WITH FRIENDS: Research indicates that literacy skills play a large role in language development and academic success.

M
y name is Dr. William Liou. I’m the clinical director and a board- certified pediatric dentist at American Pediatric Dental Group. I appreciate your thoughtful questions and I am excited to educate parents on the importance of a child’s diet and how it can affect their teeth. Below I have answers to your questions. All of my answers are based on the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) guidelines, In addition, some of your questions pertain to overall health, which I’ve referenced the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).
1. What is a safe amount of daily sugar intake for toddlers and kids?
The American Heart Association recommends: • Children over age 2 years (up to 18yr) should consume no more than 6 teaspoons of added sugar each day. Examples of added sugar are: soda, fruit-flavored drinks, sports drinks, pastries. • Children under 2 years should avoid consuming any added sugar since they need nutrient-rich diets and are developing taste preferences.
AAPD guidelines regarding juices:
• Juice should not be introduced to infants before one year of age; intake of juice should be limited to four ounces a day for children ages 1-3 years of age; 4-6 ounces for children 4-6 years of age; eight ounces for children 7-18 years of age.
2. How much and how quickly does sugar affect kids’ teeth?
Cavities are formed from patient’s diet, genetic factors, and level of hygiene. Plaque (which is a residue left on teeth) is composed of saliva, bacteria, and food. The bacteria feed off of this food residue and the byproduct is acidic which is what causes cavities. That is why it is essential to brush your teeth often. With regards to genetic factors, some people have stronger tooth enamel and more “basic” saliva, which can counteract the acidic byproduct bacteria produces, reducing their chances for cavities.
3. What percentage of kids’ vitamins would you say are actually healthy/sugar-free?
There are many vitamins being marketed. It is always important to check out the ingredients, especially those claiming
they are “Pediatricians #1 choice”. It’s important to check for sugar and acidic content of vitamins, since both are vital components in the cavity process. One ingredient found in vitamins and sugar-free gum is Xylitol. Xylitol is a great sugar substitute because bacteria cannot metabolize it, therefore reducing cavities in the process.
4. Gummies are a popular way to administer vitamins to kids since they look and sometimes taste like candy, but are there better/healthier ways for kids to get their necessary vitamins? Referencing the Mayo Clinic, “multivitamins aren’t necessary in most healthy children who are growing normally.” Regular meals and snacks should be sufficient in providing a complete source of nutrients.
5. What are your tips on protecting our kids from tooth decay caused by sugar?
• I believe first and foremost in trying to brush/floss after meals, instead of only in the morning and before bedtime, to be the most proactive. It is recommended by the AAPD to use fluoridated toothpaste for every age child, once they have teeth. Flossing should begin as soon as you see contacts (no spaces) between teeth. • The frequency at which you subject your teeth to sugary substances affects the rate of cavity formation. An example is, if a child has a pound of candy, would it be better for their teeth to eat it all at once or eat in several sittings? The answer would be to eat it all at once (although still not recommended!). • Drink more water. • Foods that are sticky and likely to get trapped onto a tooth’s surface are more likely to cause cavities (i.e. cookies, raisins, candy). It is essential that children see a pediatric dentist by the age of 1. Since the enamel on baby teeth is very thin, cavities can form rapidly. The value in seeing a dentist at a young age is emphasizing prevention of cavities and establishing good oral hygiene practices at home.

Sleep Hygiene 101 By Dr. Myriam Padron and Dr. David Yudell
D
id you know that we spend up to 1/3rd of our life sleeping? Sleep is an extremely important part of our everyday life as it lets the brain recharge. Maintaining a healthy sleeping schedule allows us to learn and retain information more easily. In addition, healthy sleep cycles improve concentration, productivity, and emotional/social functioning. Biologically, sleep even enhances immune function as cells have time to repair themselves. How much sleep do we need? It is recommended that infants receive 1620 hours of sleep, while school age children receive 10-11 hours. As we age we may need a little less sleep, for example teenagers can function on 9-10 hours of sleep while adults can get by with 7.5-8 hours of sleep. However, too little sleep can lead to a variety of side effects including: irritability, depressed mood, decreased motivation, academic issues, increased risk of heart disease, and increased stress. For children, sleep deprivation can lead to lower GPAs, difficulties concentrating, decreased athletic performance, increased rates of depression/anxiety, and decreased immune system functioning. The quality and quantity of our sleep can vary. Is your child having trouble sleeping? Here are some tips that can help your kids fall and stay asleep, while remaining alert and well rested throughout the day. • Enforce a consistent bed time on a nightly basis - This will take time and effort! • Sit quietly before bed with no excessive stimulation – Remove all electronics • Allow them to read a book or engage in relaxation routine – Soft music, meditation.
• •
Avoid sweets or food with caffeine at least 3 hours prior to bedtime Let them use their bed only for sleep - Do not work, eat, or do anything productive in bed • Take a warm bath one hour before bed • Keep a sleep diary to monitor sleep cycles • Make sure their bedroom is comfortable – air conditioning / fan / noise / intrusive lights • Restrict napping • Monitor their diet and provide regular exercise opportunities If they continue to struggle to fall asleep for more than 20 minutes, teach them to get out of bed! The goal is to avoid associating bedtime with frustration. When they get out of bed, have them read a book, meditate, or engage in an activity that produces a low level of stimulation. When they start to tire, the goal is to get back into bed. If this pattern is repeated for several days it should work to create new habits that encourage them to sleep. Following these steps may improve not only their sleep but also how they feel throughout the day. The goal is to get them well-rested and energized! Sometimes satisfying sleep can be hard to achieve, but it starts with slowly developing healthy sleep habits one step at a time. I invite you to reach out to me for future article suggestions. FAMILY HEALTH healthcare professionals with specific training and experience in the assessment and management of concussions. The sports medicine physicians at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital are frequently involved in the care of patients with concussions and are specifically trained to provide care along the continuum of concussion from management of the acute injury to return-to-play decisions. The Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Concussion Clinic was developed as a multi-disciplinary center for pediatric patients with TBI that streamlines access to care to subspecialties including neurology, neuropsychology, and vestibular therapy in addition to sports medicine and physical medicine and rehabilitation. Is there anything an athlete can do to prevent concussions? Strengthening the neck musculature has been shown to decrease the risk of concussions. Currently, there is no conclusive evidence that helmets, mouthguards or headbands can prevent concussions. Do dancers require specialized care after trauma or for overuse injuries? Dancers and performing artists speak a sport specific language and may require specialized treatment that takes into account their activity. Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital’s pediatric sports medicine program [U18] Sports Medicine developed a Performing Arts and Dance Medicine program centered around getting these athletes back into the studio in an expedited fashion that doesn’t involve only rest. With former company physicians from the Boston Ballet, our team speaks the language which helps quickly and accurately make the diagnosis and get the appropriate treatment plan started. For more information call 954 – 265 – 6300 or JDCH.com/ortho. Locations: Boca Raton, Coral Springs, Hollywood, Miramar, Wellington (2019), Weston.

Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital is proud to announce that for the 5th time its Department of Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery was nationally ranked by US News and World Report among the best hospitals for pediatric orthopaedics in the country. We sat down with Dr. Matthew Fazekas, FAAP, CAQSM, a pediatric sports medicine and concussion specialist to discuss current trends in pediatric orthopaedics. Why is it so important that kids see a pediatric orthopaedic specialist? Kids are not little adults. They have open growth plates and normal developmental changes that may be occurring during the course of treating an injury. Seeing a specialist with training focused on the pediatric athlete can get them back on the field as quickly and safely as possible. Who is best qualified to take care of young athletes who suffer a concussion? Concussions may be caused either by a direct blow to the head, face, or neck or by an indirect blow elsewhere on the body with an impulsive rotational force transmitted to the brain. This impact results in the rapid onset of impaired neurologic function that resolves on its own. The resolution of symptoms typically follows a sequential course. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that approximately 1.7 million individuals sustain a Traumatic Brain Injury or TBI in the United States every year. Individuals may suffer multiple traumatic events, especially if playing contact sports. The annual incidence of sports-related concussions in the United States is estimated between 1.6 and 3.8 million. Concussions occur in all sports; the majority of concussions occurring in organized sports are sustained in football, hockey, rugby, soccer and basketball. The care of athletes with sports-related concussions is ideally performed by

nce again, Coral Park Elementary is off to a “KIND” start to the school year. We continue to focus on the importance of choosing kind, believing that “Being Kind Strengthens the Mind”. We have officially kicked off our “Start with Hello” campaign. This program enables students to make a difference, with their peers, in a simple, fun, and impactful way. They accomplish this by encouraging them to take small but powerful actions to promote connectedness and inclusion. The program helps to identify and help others who are showing signs of social isolation. We have officially started our Play Pal Program. We have over 100 third, fourth and fifth grade students providing peer mentoring to students in all grade levels, who could benefit from additional academic or social support. These are just some of the ways we are working to spread “kindness” and invite our entire Coral Park community to do the same. For our parents, we have formed our School Advisory Council (SAC) and our School Advisory Forum (SAF). We invite our school community to participate in these meetings to provide a parent voice as we collaborate together. The next meeting is scheduled for November 28th at 7:15 am. Dear James S. Hunt Elementary Community,

The fall season has arrived, and we are excited about celebrations and all the exciting events we have planned for the coming weeks and months. We are celebrating Sara Dorvil, who is one of five 1st Graders countywide receiving Honorable Mention for the poster she submitted to the National School Lunch Week Poster Contest. We also want to celebrate our Art Teacher, Ms. Debi London, who was recognized by NBC News for her dedication to our community. Ms. London has been leading the renovation and beautification of Hunt’s Butterfly Garden via many different projects with the help of Donors Choose and the Hunt Community. We are also applauding our Teacher of the Year, Ms. Mercedes Vazquez, and our
Employee of the Year, Mr. Jimmy Selby. We thank them for all they do for the Hunt family each day! We look forward to seeing our families at McTeachers Night October 25th, our Fall Festival October 30th, and our Annual Thanksgiving Luncheon and Bingo Night, both on November 16th. Lastly, we welcome our newest Business Community Partner, MACY’S. Hunt was awarded a $1250 grant to set up our new Macy’s Reading Resource Room! We are HUNT, proudly, the first elementary school of Coral Springs! Thank you! We wish all of our Hunt families a wonderful holiday season!
The first quarter of the 2018-19 school was exciting and eventful! We welcomed back our families, the first week of school, by inviting them to an Ice Cream Social. It was standing room only! A few weeks later we also invited everyone to come to Bingo night. We were tickled that so many turned up in pajamas to participate. Our faculty and students hit the ground running learning their academic standards for each subject. We have seen great gains, creative projects and lots of discussions. Our wonderful PTO members hosted three successful family nights. During the month of October, we held another successful family night at Zona Fresca, as our families enjoyed delicious
foods while helping raise funds for the school. The Rams families supported all family nights and we had tremendous turnout at every one. We have many events planned for the 2nd quarter. ! Looking forward to more great events with tons of attendance! Latinos in Action class at Ramblewood Middle School, will be coming to our school to work with our 2nd grade classes. We enjoy collaborating with our zone schools! We are having a great year so far and look for to so much more wonderful events and activities. We wish our families a Happy Holiday season with lots of fun and wonderful memories.

HUNTINGTON LEARNING CENTER ACADEMIC SUPERSTARS
untington Learning Center continues its Academic Superstars program with Sports and Activities Directory. This program gives students recognition for their achievements. There are different types of students with different academic struggles. Here are just a few of their stories: Subject Tutoring: When students come to us for help with a specific subject, they work on a 1-on-1 setting with their Huntington teacher. We find that by working this way, the student feels more comfortable asking questions, and the tutor really gets to know the student’s needs, and are able to pull additional curriculum if necessary. In addition to that, with permission, we stay in close contact with the student’s teacher so that we know what needs to be turned in and when, as well as what topics will be taught and when. This allows the student to really grasp concepts needed to pass and do well in their class. We tutor for math, science, history, and more! Tracy T. has been coming to our center for about a year; specifically, for help in Math. She works 1-on-1with her teacher so that she is able to grasp mathematics skills necessary for doing well in her Algebra 2 class. She just informed us that she received a 96% on her recent test! Exam Prep: Students work with teachers in a one-on-one setting. Students gain test taking strategies, skill development, and timing. Students are retested periodically Tracy T.

Jonah has been coming to our center throughout the summer and into the school year for SAT prep. He has been practicing concepts at home using our online supplemental program as well as using test taking strategies to help him master the SAT. In addition to this, his confidence and skill level have improved quite a bit! Jonah has not completed his program yet, but thus far he has improved his SAT score by 130 points! He is well on his way to meeting his goal! Learning Center: Students who need help with reading and math start with an Academic Evaluation in which we test for Phonics, Vocabulary, Math, Comprehension, etc. From there we are able to create a custom program for their needs. We meet periodically with the parents to show progress, and programs adjust as the student improves. All tutoring is administered by a certified teacher. Katha P. started at the center at the beginning of the summer, she was struggling with active reading and critical thinking skills. She has improved tremendously in the time she’s been here, and she’s not done yet! She has moved up three levels from where she began, and is able to not only determine the correct answers for questions, but defend them with details from the text as well! We offer many different programs at our center. If you need help with school, we’re your one-stop shop! Call or visit the Huntington Learning Center Coral Springs location for a consultation.

alk into Lady and the Mug and you will be greeted with a warm hello and an invitation to chat. Aimee Tarte, the owner of Lady and the Mug, just has a way of making everyone she meets comfortable and welcome. These are the traits that Aimee brings to her Non-profit organization Tarte’s Hearts. Aimee learned, from life experience, that excuses don’t help you succeed, only hard work, determination and heart. Aimee drew on her own difficult life experiences to help her get through school, become a successful teacher and of course open one of the most popular coffee shops. When Aimee’s father, her rock, suddenly passed away, she felt she needed to honor him. She wanted to create something that would help today’s youth feel empowered to conquer their own life’s troubles while helping others in need. Aimee began Tarte’s Hearts. This non-profit organization is available for all students. There are no academic requirements, no specific talents and no fees, just students who want to make an impact on others. The goal of Tarte’s Hearts is Action with Compassion. Students will learn to have a better self-image while developing new friendships as they learn to help those in need. Tarte’s Hearts hosts a minimum of one event or activity per quarter and has meetings every two weeks. In the meetings, they focus on building character, fostering empathy through supporting one another and also understanding the struggles going on in our world. Then they tackle the issues with suggestions for us to be directly involved in making an impact. Students have participated in reading to younger children, visiting veterans in state nursing homes and working in animal shelters. There is no or limitations on what we can do. Tarte’s Hearts began at South Broward High and had over 40 students attend the first meeting. The organization has branched out into Ramblewood Middle and Coral Springs Charter. Students who attend the meetings and

the events learn about acceptance, embracing differences and celebrating each other’s unique characteristics. When students discovered that the Hispanic students in their school were bullied for their heritage, they put together a Hispanic heritage dance to educate and embrace as well as stop the bullying of these students. Each event begins with a survey of the expectation for the event and ends with a reflection. Questions include: Who did you help? What did you learn? How did it make you feel? How did it change you? Students are being taught to leave their comfort zone and form bonds with students they never liked or never gave a chance. They are encouraged to help make someone’s life better even if they themselves are struggling. Ice breakers, discussions, positive attitudes are all part of how Tarte’s Hearts encourages interaction and acceptance in each meeting and event. Aimee’s goal is to create a club in every school. If students or parents are interested in starting a Tarte’s Hearts chapter at their school, Aimee and her team will help them start their chapter and give them info on getting started. However, in starting each new chapter, Aimee needs your help. The organization is looking for generous and kind people and businesses that would like to sponsor a student to participate. We would love to partner with others to make a difference. With each $30 donation, you can sponsor a student for the entire year and they will send you a letter and photos to build a genuine relationship and show the impact Tarte’s Hearts will have on their life. We encourage you to check out our website www.tarteshearts.com for videos and past events as well. We encourage all students to discover Tarte’s Hearts and change lives. ***Below is the link for giving to our PayPal account. You can also mail checks to 9016 NW 55th St, Sunrise, FL 33351. ccording to FeedingAmerica.org, 1 in 8 people are food insecure and 1 in 5 children struggle with hunger translating to 74,730 children that go to bed hungry every night right here in South Florida. 25% of these families do not qualify for any state or federal food benefits. This is why it is essential that community organizations such as Harvest Drive Florida get involved In the fall of 1992, Renee Herman took it upon herself to organize a food drive at Country Isles Elementary that would provide a week’s worth of groceries to 20 Weston area families who were down on their luck. She rallied the students to help with neighborhood canned food drives and camped outside of Publix Supermarkets to accept donations. They succeeded and the 20 families in need were fed. But, she didn’t stop there. Twenty-six years later, Renee is still on a mission to stamp out hunger and help families in need through Harvest Drive. Since the inaugural Harvest Drive, the number of families in need has grown and as a result, this grassroots organization has become a district wide partnership with the Broward County Public Schools. After many years of orchestrating the details of this annual event, Renée has been blessed with several special people to assist her in her efforts. Kim O’Neill, Susan Gross, Davi Leoniff, Jodi Samson and Amy Freund all volunteer to share the responsibilities. “It takes thousands of people to make this happen each year. Organizations, Broward County Schools, and individuals have been instrumental in helping with donations and money to buy groceries,” said Renee.
By Margot Lyons Puleri
Another distinctive characteristic of Harvest Drive is the compassion and dedication displayed each year by students who participate. “What really makes this work, what is truly unique about Harvest Drive, is that it is the students and the schools who donate their time and effort with such enthusiasm to make this a reality,” she says. Many of the students volunteer every year and she has formed a lasting bond with them throughout her time organizing the Harvest Drive. “Teaching children at a young age that their contributions can make a difference in the lives of others is what makes this project so rewarding,” Renee adds. Not only does this make the hard work and sacrifice pay off, it gives her hope for the future and inspires her to do even more. This year, over 200 public and private schools are involved in the mission to collect enough food to feed over 2,400 families throughout Broward County for Thanksgiving. Distribution sites will be set up at 14 local schools, with Western High School being the largest. In addition to these sites, approximately 189 other schools will be taking donations that will then be divided up between the area distribution sites.
Families with children in Broward County Schools are referred to the Harvest Drive by Broward County social workers as well as other local social service agencies based on their financial need. In addition to the week’s worth of groceries and Thanksgiving dinner, families are able to shop in the Harvest Drive’s makeshift stores for a variety of household items that have been donated. Volunteers work all year long collecting donations for the “Harvest Drive Boutiques” so that these families may find things they need at no cost to them. Western High and Pompano Beach High School will be fully stocked with items such as new and gently used toys, clothes and shoes, books and household items that many of us may take for granted are most in need by these families. “What keeps me awake at night worrying is that the day before the families arrive that week before Thanksgiving, we will be short. We need monetary donations and gift cards so we can buy the items we are short on at the last minute. I cannot bear the thought that our local, neighborhood families will go hungry when so many individuals, businesses and organizations have so much to give,” she said.
SCHOOLS
Here is how you can say, “YES, I want to help!” • Host a Neighborhood Food Drive to collect non-perishables and things from the list below. • Donate whatever amount of money (gift cards are encouraged as well) and non-perishable food you are able to give. • Feed the volunteers on Monday or Tuesday before Thanksgiving. • Donate toothbrushes, toothpaste, toiletries, clothes, books and toys. • Help sort and pack during Harvest Days at the different distribution sites (visit www.harvestdriveflorida.com for schedule). • Spread the word!

Unlike many other not for profit organizations, 100% of donations goes to local families in need! No one gets paid to run this organization,” Renee says. “We need more help. Hunger is a year round challenge.” In addition to the Thanksgiving Harvest Drive, throughout last year they made an additional 1,000 Helping Hands Harvest Drive boxes full of 40 lbs. of non-perishable food that were given out to families with children in our local schools who are hungry. They also start each school year off by providing well stuffed backpacks to nearly 300 students who cannot otherwise afford school supplies.

irst quarter has been off to a great start at Coral Springs middle school. September was a very busy month as students were involved in two very successful events on campus, Peace week and Start with Hello week. Peace week brought beautiful displays of chalk art, pinwheels and signs of peace all throughout the campus. Teachers shared stories of peace with students and discussed some of the most influential peace keepers in history. “Start with Hello week is a part of the Sandy Hook Promise which promotes students to be kind to one another and to recognize socially isolated students, using easy steps to encourage positive relationships and lasting friendships. We look forward to many more rewarding events and activities throughout the school year. We wish all of our families a wonderful holiday season and a restful winter break. Go Stallions!

Ah, the excitement of going back to school! New
classrooms, new teachers, new friends and classmates… not to mention new back packs, supplies, shoes and uniforms. For many children, the latter would not be possible, were it not for the Broward County Back to School Extravaganza. And this year, over 7,500 students benefited. $35.00 is all that is needed to outfit a child with what they need to start the school year off on the right foot. For the eighth year, the Children’s Services Council issued a challenge grant to fund back-to-school supplies for students identified by School Board Social Workers and community partners as being economically disadvantaged. Dozens of foundations, corporations, non-profits and individuals stepped up to provide appropriate funding and logistical support to ensure the success of the campaign. Four distribution events took place over two weekends: on July 28th at New Renaissance Middle School and Dillard High School, and on August 4th at Blanche Ely High School and Hallandale High School. As thousands of people lined-up to participate long before the gates opened at each venue, it was clear that the need is great and that events such as these are badly needed to ensure children
begin their school in the best of circumstances. “The kids are very happy and we are very thankful for everything that you are doing for the families here today,” said a father participant at Hallandale’s event with his wife and four children. “This is a great event. I particularly appreciate the new shoes and the book distribution,” said another parent at Ely. Hundreds of volunteers ensured smooth operations throughout. Robust resource fairs added to each family’s ability to receive materials, information and resources, including immunizations, eye exams, KidCare insurance and much more. DJ’s, face painting, games and snacks provided for a carnival like atmosphere, fun for the whole family. The Broward Sheriff’s Office and local law enforcement agencies were also instrumental in ensuring friendly but effective crowd control support and overall smooth operations. The work of the Back to School Extravaganza committee will begin again early in the new year, as we look to continue making the beginning of the school year an exciting and rewarding time for all children. For more information on this program and the Children’s Services Council, go to www.cscbrowad.org.

manda’s Place, a non-profit “Mommy and Me & Daddy and Me” program, believes that parenting can be one of the most exciting challenges in life. This challenge arrives as a small and innocent bundle of joy. Our teachers strive to assist families to meet this challenge by providing current parenting and child development information, in a non-judgmental and supportive environment. Our curriculum is designed to promote effective parenting skills, while providing an enriched and safe environment for young children to learn and thrive. We pack a lot into our 90 minute classes and encourage the growth of social, cognitive, gross and fine motor skills. The first half hour consists of creative free time. This segment includes; stimulating, age appropriate activities plus an art or sensory project for children to explore with their parents. The second segment transitions into circle time with music, movement, and stimulating props such as: puppets for Old McDonald, shakers for Shake your Sillies, and flash lights for Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. Circle time ends with bubbles followed by story time. The final segment is an interactive parenting discussion led by the teacher. The children play right next to you while parents participate in an open conversation that includes weekly topics such as developmental milestones, sleeping through the night, behavior, and potty training. Amanda’s Place also offers a special Sibling Program for families with newborns and an older sibling(s) between the ages of 2-5 years. In the sibling program, parent and

Our staff also hosts annual events such as: a Spooktacular Halloween Party, Farm Day, Spring Picnic, Parents’ Night Out, and a 3 year old Graduation Ceremony. We also schedule informative guest speakers and plan special play dates throughout the year. Amanda’s Place was established in 1986 under the direction of the Broward County School Board. After 28 years at Pompano Beach High School, we have recently relocated to Margate Elementary. Classes are available year round for infants to children 36 months. We follow the Broward County Public School’s calendar, offering four 8-10 week sessions, and a 4 week summer session. Morning and afternoon classes are held twice a week and evening classes are offered once a week. Amanda’s Place is truly “A Happy Place to Be.” This program attracts families from all areas of Broward and southern Palm Beach counties. The average cost of a nine week session is $125 for twice a week sessions, and $85 for once a week. Cost is per child and there is also an annual $20 activity fee. Contact us today if you would like to join our Amanda’s Place family and make lifelong friends. Call (754) 322-6931. But don’t wait too long because our classes fill up quickly!

n September 8th, Forest Glen Middle school’s Ocean Guardians club embarked on an amazing journey… Shark Tagging! During the trip, we teamed up with researchers and scientists from the Angari foundation and FIU CASE (Florida International University: College of arts, sciences, and education) to have an entire day devoted to sharks. During the trip, the researchers taught us about sharks and then explained the shark tagging process. The research team taught us how to set up the buoys, pull in the buoys, and how to collect the data if we were lucky enough to catch a shark. Our group was divided into 4 teams. The team names were the Great Hammerhead sharks, the Nurse sharks, the Tiger sharks, and the Anonymous sharks. Each team had to rig and throw out 2 buoys. Some of the pictures even show students kissing the bait for good luck! Now for the exciting part… The sharks! Overall, we caught 2 Great Hammerhead sharks that were about 10 feet long from head to tail. (This is extremely large!) After we get the shark close to the boat, we can start collecting the data. We had to measure the length of the shark, take a sample of its dorsal fin, and tag it. Although we only caught 2 sharks, everyone had an amazing time on the boat and it was a beautiful day. We hope to work with the Angari foundation and FIU CASE again soon! What a wonderful learning experience.
