Dear Readers,

As Summer break ends and the new school year begins, we have so much going on in Parkland. If you haven’t visited the Parkland Library lately, you really should. The beginning of the school year is the perfect time because so many of our programs support education. Studies have shown in overwhelming fashion that children who visit their local library perform better in school. That’s just one reason to come to the Parkland Library, there are many others. Every month we feature work from a different artist, we have programs for kids, adults and seniors, and we have speakers, jazz nights and on and on. The Parkland Library is about a lot more than books. That said, with a name like Parkland, we make sure to have some great parks. Visit our parks and you’ll find all sorts of activities. In September we host an annual Back to School Splash Bash at the Equestrian Center at Temple Park. Later that month we’ll host Battle of the Bands at the Amphitheatre at Pine Trails Park. What would music be at Pine Trails Park without food trucks? We’ll never know because we never do one without the other. So bring the family, your blankets, lawn chairs, and sprawl on the Amphitheatre lawn for dinner and music. Speaking of music with your dinner, surely you’ve heard of the best concert series in south Florida: Eats ‘n’ Beats. On the second Saturday of each month from 5:30pm – 9:30pm we have two free concerts on the Amphitheatre stage and approximately 20 food trucks from which to choose your dinner. You don’t need reservations, just a hearty appetite and a love for music. Pine Trails Park is also the site of the Fishing Derby on Sunday, September 24th and Movies in the Park on Friday, October 20th. The movie Sing grossed more than $632 million at the box office, but you can see it for free under the stars at the Amphitheatre. October is the month we have our safe way to trick or treat: Trunk or Treat at the Equestrian Center on Friday, October 27th. These are just some of the larger events we have on tap for the next few months, but there are many more things happening in Parkland. If you haven’t visited the P-REC at Pine Trails Park lately, you’re missing quite a bit. This facility it packed with activities for infants and moms, toddlers, adolescents, teens, adults, and seniors. Those who live in Parkland have already received their Parkland Playbook parks and recreation guide in the mail. If you don’t have one, you can pick up a free copy at the P-REC in Pine Trails Park. Perhaps the best way to keep up to date on all the things we have going on in Parkland is to follow us on Facebook at facebook.com/copfl and subscribe to our e-blast “Parkland on Tap” at cityofparkland.org/notifyme. That way you’ll have special delivery of our events to your inbox once each week and, on Facebook, you’ll see how much happens in our corner of the county. As always, I love hearing from our residents, so please share your thoughts and comments with me at chunschofsky@cityofparkland.org.
Sincerely,
Mayor Christine Hunschofsky City of Parkland

Dear Readers,
Welcome to a new school year. What a wonderful summer filled with days at camp, on vacation and family fun. We are at that time again when our children turn their focus towards their education. Fortunately, this issue has everything to help you with your child’s education, from early childhood to high school. Inside you will see all the updated school grades, FCAT scores, and updated information on all the schools in our area. Check out an important update from Broward School District Superintendent Runcie and our updates from our local schools. In this issue you will find everything you need to get your kids started back to school right from academic services, activities, sports leagues and everything in between. Use our events directory inside this fall for everything you could possibly do with your family. We have some wonderful articles from Parkland’s Mayor, Christine Hunschofsky and Deputy Vice Mayor, Ken Cutler titled “The Olympians.” We have great stories about Pop Warner Football’s Scholar Athletes and several Health & Wellness articles to keep your family going strong. There is also an article showcasing Honor Flight and the J.P. Taravella 911 Stair Climb. Finally, make sure you see all the new programs offered at the Parkland Recreation Center (P-Rec), they have so much to offer you and your family. As always this summer was filled with baseball and we are so lucky to have some of the best leagues in the country; Parkland Little League, The Parkland Pokers, CSA and NSLL to name a few. Congratulations to NSLL 9/10 for bringing home the Section 8 Championship. A special shout out to the North Springs Little League Seniors for winning the Little League World Series. It was great to see our community come together for the “World Series Watch Party” and for their support in welcoming home our National Championship team! As your children settle in to their new school routines try to make sure they are not overscheduled and are spending equal time with academics, sports and activities. They may be heavily involved with dance, martial arts or soccer but it also might be time try something new. There are so many amazing quality programs right here in Coral Springs & Parkland and we have them all listed for you! Having a good balance between studying and extracurricular activities will help your child in the future by learning how to manage their time, develop a solid work ethic and attend school more regularly, which will help students achieve higher grades, better test scores and have higher self-esteem. Keep the directory around and go through it with your children and I’m sure you can find something for any of their interest. On a personal note, I have had an opportunity in the last couple of months to travel out of the country and take a family vacation through the Colorado Rockies to Salt Lake City, Utah. We created so many wonderful memories; however, I can truly say that I could not imagine living anywhere but right here in South Florida. Our community is not only the best vacation spot in the world but a fantastic place to raise a family.

ou probably know Parkland’s connection to the Olympics through Dara Grace Torres, an American twelvetime Olympic medalist and former world record-holder in three events. Torres represented the United States in five Olympic games (1984, 1988, 1992, 2000 and 2008), and was the oldest swimmer (41) ever to earn a place on the U.S. Olympic team. She won four gold, four silver, and four bronze Olympic medals. But Dara was a Parkland “resident” born in Los Angeles, California and claims Beverly Hills as her hometown. Parkland has another Olympic connection I bet you didn’t know about. Six foot seven inches “Big George” Roumain was born in 1976 and grew up right here in PARKLAND! He was an Olympic Volleyball player named to the U.S. 2000 Olympic Team in August 2000 to compete in Sydney Australia. He was a member of the U.S. National Team from 1999–2001 and was named 2000 Olympic Male Volleyball Athlete of the Year. George Roumain grew up in South Florida alongside his two older sisters Lisa and Gina. George started playing volleyball with his sister at the beach as an aside to his passion for surfing. He first began playing indoor volleyball as a sophomore at St. Thomas High School and then transferred to his neighborhood school Stoneman Douglas High School. The Eagles ended with a 25-0 record in 1993 under Coach Jim Roper. By his junior year at Douglas, he was highly recruited all over the country. He finished his high school career in California where the volleyball competition was the most

competitive nationally. The Nike Club Team he joined in his senior year in California won the Junior Olympics that summer, and he was named MVP of the Junior Olympics. Thereafter he attended Pepperdine University where he graduated with a degree in advertising. After graduating he moved to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs to train for the 2000 World Games, which served as a warm up for the Olympics. After the 2000 Olympics, George moved to Italy and played two seasons in the Italian league, which was the top world league at the time. Several years later, George was inducted into The Pepperdine Hall of Fame. He was a two time National Player of the Year, three-time “All American”, and four-time All Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Year. George still holds his record as number one in career kills, kills per game, and points. Big George joined the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) and began playing beach volleyball tournaments around the country. In 2004 he was named the AVP Rookie of the Year and won the Huntington Beach Open. He currently resides with his family in Thousand Oaks, California. Kenneth Cutler, Esq. is the current Parkland Deputy Vice Mayor. He is an avid research contributor to the Parkland Historical Society and past president of the Parkland Friends of the Library. He and his law partner, Andrew Rader, are both long-time residents of Parkland.

THE FRIENDSHIP INITIATIVE
Started in 2011, the mission of The Friendship Initiative (TFI) is to develop and grow programs, which enable children with special needs and typical children to learn from each other and connect as friends and to build the nation’s first, totally inclusive community park. TFI is committed to raising the funds necessary to support this mission. We are currently providing 3 unique programs:
FIT FRIENDS
Fit Friends is designed for children and young adults with special needs who want to increase stamina and body tone. The program’s focus is on whole-body fitness and living a healthy lifestyle. Each participant is matched with a trained student volunteer. The programs begin with a light dynamic warm up that includes stretching. Each child then engages in aerobic circuit training and strength circuit training for each session. Exercise routines within the circuits are varied for each of the sessions, which are offered once a week for 8 weeks
ART WORKS
At Art Works, children and young adults with special needs express themselves using a variety of art forms and techniques. Each session allows participants to explore different media including clay, paint, pastels, markers, pencil, etc. Each Artist is paired with their own student volunteer. The program, run in coordination with Art Paper Scissors at their studio in Parkland, is a fun-filled hour set in a compassionate environment that encourages exploration and creativity while improving fine motor skills. Through this creative process, social interaction occurs organically between the artists and the student volunteers. For more information about these programs, please contact Jeb Niewood at Jeb@ thefriendshipinitiative.org or by calling Jeb at (954) 464-6078 and visit www.thefriendshipinitiative.org and The Friendship Initiative Facebook page.
READING WITH FRIENDS
Research indicates that literacy skills play a large role in language development and academic success. Oftentimes, individuals with special needs become excluded from literacy programs due to the barriers that exist such as prolonged sitting, reduced opportunities for participation and a lack of understanding from the community. Led by a speech-language pathologist, Reading With Friends strives to deliver a well-rounded experience in which children can explore books through all of their senses along with their new friends. Our mission is to provide an accepting and inclusive environment that allows individuals of all abilities to enjoy literacy while building friendships.

History of iFLY’s STEM Program
Coral S pr ing s & Pa r kl and Spo rts & Act ivi ti es D i r e ct o r y | I ssu e 18 | Au gu st - Oct o b e r 2017
P
rior to 2013, iFLY tunnels in Orlando and San Francisco had created their own programs to meet the demand from teachers for engaging STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) field Trips. After much success in these markets, iFLY decided to create a robust STEM program to serve K-12 students that could be replicated in tunnels around the country. STEM Education professionals created a curriculum for elementary, middle and high school. The program was piloted in Austin Texas before delivery at the national level. Is now serves thousands of students all over the US each month. Students are exposed to math, science, and physics concepts relating to the indoor skydiving activity before experiencing the phenomena for themselves. Goals of the program 1. Increase student interest in STEM and awareness of STEM careers 2. Show students STEM is relevant, exciting, and grounded in the real world 3. Support teachers’ classroom efforts by presenting grade appropriate STEM content in a hands-on, experiential way Careers in the STEM field are the fastest growing and highest paying in the national economy, yet many young people are not interested in pursuing STEM careers. They view STEM as something that exists in a textbook, not something that impacts their own lives. iFLY has a unique opportunity to show students that STEM is relevant, real, and exciting. By using the highly engaging context of indoor skydiving, iFLY gives students a hands-on and full body experience of STEM. We want students to leave our facilities feeling inspired to pursue STEM experiences in their own lives. Here are some facts about STEM • STEM jobs are growing faster and earning more than any other field: Yet 90% of graduating seniors say they “aren’t interested”. • Governments, schools, and corporations are heavily investing in STEM. • STEM professionals earn 26% more than other workers. • The growth rate of STEM jobs is 2 times that of other fields. • Male students are over 3 times more likely to be interested in STEM majors and careers than female students. • Over 80% of students do not choose STEM paths after high school. • Only 36% of U.S. high school students are ready for college-level science. iFLY Fort Lauderdale is the only indoor vertical tunnel in South Florida and since its opening in February 2017, the tunnel has flown hundreds of students.

Is your child bullied for being overweight?
At home, food was not our friend. In fact, food bullied my mom and sister. Why I say they were bullied by food is because they felt like they had no control over what they ate. Their urges had the power over them; they were left feeling at the mercy of their poor food choices. My mom and sister were embarrassed and depressed by how they looked and yet they continued to eat junk foods. I remember one time my mom and I went to a fast food place for dinner, and she super sized her meal before super size was even on the market. At school my sister had a really rough time. She was constantly being teased for her weight. Not to mention, we would go and buy clothes, and there wasn’t a whole lot she or my mom could wear. Today there’s a lot of discussion about what the causes are for so many children having an overweight issue, could it be genetics or obesity? Some doctors believe that being chubby is something passed from one generation to the next. Others think children who are larger than others eat the same foods and practice the same unhealthy habits. One thing that everyone agrees on is that obese children are more likely to be teased or bullied in school. Especially when a child starts to enter his or her teen years, they will be more open to being bullied. The bullying can lead to children feeling helpless and not wanting to go to school. This can lead to dangerous eating disorders. I’m sure you’ve seen hundreds of news clips about childhood obesity on the television or on your computer and not one really tells anyone how to help their child lose weight or even how to live a healthy lifestyle. Eat every 2-3 hours, drink plenty of water, avoid white flour, don’t eat refined sugar, don’t order dessert, don’t drink soda, use your fist
to determine portion size, do cardio 30 to 60 minutes and build more lean muscle to speed up metabolism. These are all great tips but does anyone really follow them? Fitwize 4 Kids has helped hundreds of children loose excess pounds and get back into fitness health. Fitwize is a fitness and learning center that teaches antibullying and social skills along with an array of fitness and nutrition programs that have be developed over many years of research and with lots of awesome children participating. “We make kids into Super Heroes!” In this program, kids get educated on the impact of being bullied and bullying others through simulations, discussions and active participation. Just look at the powerful results that are possible for you child: • Increase in personal self-esteem & confidence • Increased overall body-tone and feeling more comfortable in their appearance and clothes • Increased concentration & energy levels in school • Overcoming childhood obesity • Decreased stress and anxiety levels associated with peer pressure, school, work & family living environments • Pay more attention to what they are eating and drinking and become more interested in learning about & improving these habits as well, if they haven’t begun doing so, already. There are many kids out there who have no help against being overweight or being bullied. Too often, kids are not getting attention or even noticed until the moment something goes really wrong and it’s too late. It takes something drastic and dramatic for something to change. Fitwize 4 Kids is located in the Coral Creek Plaza on the corner of Wiles and State Road 7 at 4641 N State Road 7, Unit 15B, Coral Springs, Florida 33073, 954-363-2349.

Pediatric Occupational Therapists (OTs) are life builders for children whose
lives have been raided by disability especially those with Autism and Cerebral Palsy. OTs assist these individuals to be free of their isolation, and help them to share their abilities with others. Osho says, “Nobody is superior, nobody is inferior, but nobody is equal either. People are simply unique. You are you, I am I.” OTs do not attempt to make clients like everyone else. We embrace their strengths, and work on the areas that are weakened which affect their everyday functioning. If a child has difficulty controlling his or her self-stimulating behaviors, we teach them how to satisfy that crave in supplementary ways so that it does not affect their functioning and those around them. We want them to share their uniqueness. If a child with Cerebral Palsy demonstrates impairments with his or her motor control and coordination skills which affect his or her activities of daily living including dressing, bathing, and social interaction skills, occupational therapist help remediate deficits and train clients and caregivers on compensatory techniques as needed in order to lead fulfilling lives. Various children with Autism may miss sensory information from the environment that provide signals about what is going on in their surroundings and may be referred to as having poor registration. The brain may not be getting what it needs to produce appropriate responses. Other children may be referred to as having seeking behavior. These individuals are characteristically active and continuously engaged in their environments. They add sensory input to every experience in daily life. They may appear impulsive and the consideration for safety when playing may be absent. Some children with Autism may display hypersensitivities to sounds, sights, smells, tastes, and textures. These children may have sensitivity behavior. They have over-reactive neural systems that make them aware of every stimulus that becomes available, and do not have the appropriate ability to adjust to these stimuli. Children may also present as having avoiding behavior which represent those who may engage in disruptive behaviors especially in situations where they know they are having difficulty with. They avoid circumstances by either withdrawing or participating in emotional outbursts that enable them to get out of the situation. The child may appear
stubborn and controlling and prefer routines without any sudden changes. The child is creating a state to limit sensory input to those events that are known and therefore easy for the nervous system to interpret. There is not a cookie-cutter treatment plan for these exceptional children. OTs provide the children and caregivers with individualized recipes (treatment plans) called a sensory diet with ingredients (tools) to assist the child to regulate his or her sensory system for success at home, school, and in the community. Children with Cerebral Palsy characteristically demonstrate deficits with reflex, body movement, muscle tone, balance, posture, muscle coordination, and receiving and responding to information through the senses. These complications can considerably impair a child’s ability to successfully participate in his or her activities of daily living including, dressing, feeding, sitting, standing, socializing, and much more. These limitations can lead to isolation. OTs encompass the skills necessary to improve their posture, reduce muscle tone and improve their range of motion. OTs will improve a child’s self-care skills, visual motor skills, handwriting skills, and the ability to navigate their environment. These skills are imperative to improve a child’s functional independence to replace isolation into inclusion. But, treatment does not end in the therapy clinic. A comprehensive home exercise and activities program and family education are vital to this process. OTs are knowledgeable in numerous areas in pediatric care. The focus is on improving a child’s functional independence. Through individualized treatment strategies and taking a family-centered approach, limitations can be altered into great expectations. School is BACK in Session! – Start off Strong By Dr. David Yudell
B
y the time you read this, your child will be back in school. We all want our children to be successful. Education requires many components to be successful. Starting the year with open eyes is often the best approach. We quickly learn how to buy school supplies, prepare a lunch, backpack and find out the best way to get to school. The subtlety of what to do when there is a “bump” in the road is when parents start to get lost. I am hopeful that this article will help and provide some direction. First off, we should be working to teach our children how to work hard. Carol Dweck and Claudia Mueller, completed a study looking at the effects of praise on young students. Half were praised for working hard and the other half were praised for their ability or “smartness.” When given a set of problems, those praised for hard work performed 25% better than the “smart” group. The lesson taught from this and similar research is that to get the best effort and results out of our children we need to reinforce hard work rather than ability. The lesson we want them to learn is that their hard work was directly responsible for their success. Change your approach to praise and reinforcement and you will give them the building blocks to learn to control their endeavors through effort. As a parent you can do this by helping your child to learn that studying, practice and work is what will most frequently lead to success. Become a model for your child’s endeavors. Praise them often for their effort not their accomplishments. Offer immediate, positive feedback on what they are doing and you will see their success, and most importantly their belief that they can affect positive change in their lives build year after year.
The second obstacle occurs when a problem presents itself. It can be behaviors that get in the way of your student’s learning or ability to function within their class. It can be poor performance within the academic arena or come from an emotional category such as fears, physical illness or school refusal. Administration is helpful but their focus is divided between your child and the well being of the school. When a difficulty similar to those I just mentioned begins it is time to reach out for help. The longer the problem exists the harder it is to reverse or correct it. Throughout the year my office completes several examinations known as Psychoeducational evaluations. As a psychologist I have the ability to evaluate children at any age. We deal with social communication or developmental disorders, behavioral disruption (attention difficulties or poor behavior) academic difficulties, including IQ (intelligence quotient), learning disabilities, verbal skills, reading comprehension and fluency, spelling, mathematics, memory and writing skills. Attention deficits are also frequently explored and include an area known as executive functioning. Executive functioning involves skills such as planning, organization and time management. The goal is to find happiness and success while finding the upper end of academic achievement. Preparing yourself for what is needed AND the detours that present themselves are the best combination for success. Dr. David Yudell is a licensed psychologist and can be reached at DrYudell@DrYudell.com.

hildren + sports = a winning combination. Regular exercise provided through sports can help children develop strong bones, control weight, decrease the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, improve sleep, be academically motivated and build self-confidence. Playing sports also can be fun, but it does have a downside. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 2.6 million children ages 0 to 19 years old are treated in the emergency department each year for sports and recreation-related injuries. Some of the most common sports-related injuries are sprains and strains. Children also can experience growth plate and repetitive motion injuries, as well as heatrelated illnesses. Injuries can be either traumatic, such as a broken bone caused by a single application of force, or chronic, which result from repetitive training over a period of time. Injuries can occur for a number of reasons, including accidents, improper training or lack of appropriate gear. Age-appropriate Sports Unstructured free play that helps toddlers and preschoolers develop important motor skills is best, such as tumbling, running, throwing, catching, and swimming. As their coordination and attention spans improve, children ages 6 to 9 can begin participating in organized sports, such as soccer, gymnastics, T-ball, swimming, tennis, or martial arts. By age 10 to 12, children are typically ready to take on complex skill sports, such as basketball, hockey, and volleyball. Before allowing your child to participate in a contact sport, consider his or her age, maturity, and physical size. Some sports injuries are inevitable, but parents can take steps to minimize risk while encouraging their children to participate in regular physical activity. • Children should have a physical examination before beginning an exercise program or training. • Gradually increase the time and intensity of workouts to avoid overuse injuries.
A
variety of gynecologic problems commonly occur in young girls. It takes patience, and gentleness, but a well-trained gynecologist can examine and treat most disorders that occur in this age group in the office setting. Common reasons for a visit to your gynecologist include: vulvar or vaginal irritation or discharge, vaginal bleeding, immunization and HPV prevention, puberty and sexuality education and contraception. Vulvovaginitis is the most common gynecologic condition in children prior to puberty. It may be associated with genital discomfort, itching, redness, or vaginal discharge. Symptoms for nonspecific vulvovaginitis are indistinguishable from those in patients with specific infectious vulvovaginitis. Nonspecific causes of vulvovaginitis include chemicals (shampoos, creams, perfumes, soap, or bubble bath), tight-fitting or nylon clothing, suboptimal hygiene or allergens. Vaginal bleeding is a common cause for an adolescent, and sometimes even younger girls, to be seen by a gynecologist. Bleeding may be caused by hormonal irregularities, a foreign body inside the vagina (like toilet paper remnants), vulvovaginitis, dermatologic issues, trauma (both accidental or abuse) or rarely a tumor. Comprehensive puberty and sexuality education should be
• Choose activities appropriate for the child’s developmental level. • Teach children how to follow the rules of the game. • Provide the necessary gear that protects, fits properly and is appropriate for the sport. • Make sure every exercise routine has a warm-up and cool-down period. • Provide plenty of water or sports drink while playing to ensure proper hydration. • Use sunscreen to reduce the risk of skin cancer that can occur later in life. • Do not allow children to play when they are very tired or in pain. If an injury does occur, seek professional medical treatment if necessary. Make sure the injury heals completely before playing again. Start playing slowly and protect the injured area with a brace or special equipment. Parents should help their children select sports that match their personalities and fitness levels so they will want to practice more and improve their abilities. This physical competence can, in turn, help build both confidence and selfesteem. For more information about childhood sports injuries, talk with your doctor or call 866-904-9262 for a free referral to a physician near you. “Y
Book It Then Cook It…
our program is so much fun…Can you come back tomorrow or next week?” This comment is commonly heard after experiencing a Book N Cookin program. Book N Cookin is an interactive, theme-based children’s program that incorporates storytelling, cooking projects and games. Miss Robyne, owner of Book N Cookin, is a Broward County Public Schools approved vendor and holds a master’s degree in Elementary Education. She has written a water safety book that is sold on Amazon and BN.com and has been featured on the local TV news. She was featured on Miami Moms and was listed twice in StartupNation’s Top 50 Leading Moms in Business. Book N Cookin has been in business for more than 10 years and has visited libraries, community centers, after school programs, birthday parties, Girl Scout troops and in-house school and camp field trips. Book N Cookin is appropriate for ages 3 and up and has served every age group from preschool through adult. Book N Cookin also works with special needs groups and has participated in the Arc program for the past two summers. The program is tailored to be as fun as you want, as educational as you need and anywhere in between. Once you reserve your class and choose your theme, everything else is taken care of for you. Book N Cookin arrives ready-to-go at your destination. (Yay, no buses or carpooling!) We bring all the cooking supplies, games, recipe handouts and necessary appliances. Each child participates in the storytelling, game and cooking
project and eats what they create at the end of the class. Students, campers, preschoolers and adults enjoy the skills they gain while learning how to cook. It is wonderful to see how cooking incorporates every subject across the curriculum and can be a great tool for incorporating education and social skills while completing an edible project. Book your afterschool clubs, in-house field trips and birthday parties soon. Book N Cookin classes fill up fast and you don’t want to miss out on all the fun! For more information, call Miss Robyne at 561-870-5601, email her at bookncookin@gmail.com or check out bookncookin.com. Testimonial: “Ms. Robyne is a natural with the students. She is kind, patient, and understanding.” – Ms. Andrene, Lighthouse Academy Preschool “Book n Cookin is such a great program and Robyne is awesome. The children in my summer camp really love it. All the activities, stories, and cooking lessons are interactive, so the children learn while they are having fun.” – Ms. Lisa, Croissant Park Elementary School “Here at Heron Heights, the kids and aftercare counselors love Ms. Robyne’s Book & Cookin Program. We can’t wait for another school year to have her back.” – Ms. Solange Heron Heights Elementary

OW! Meanwhile, almost 25 years later Chuck McCanna is back in Parkland! So almost 25 years ago I helped open Riverglades elementary school as a fourth grade teacher and I have to tell you I’m glad to be back even though it took a little too long! Hi folks, I’m Charles McCanna the new principal of Park Trails Elementary School. Let’s change the world with kindness! The new theme for Park Trails Elementary School is, “Let’s change the world with kindness.” I’m very happy to be a part of such a wonderful concept to teach, not only children but everyone. We have various plans in the works to help children integrate this concept into their everyday lives. We believe random acts of kindness can change the world and make it a better place. I have been a school administrator for 25 years. 10 years as an assistant
W
principal and 15 years as the principal of Nova Blanche Foreman Elementary School. During that time, I changed the culture of the school to better meet the needs of our ever-growing students. These student needs are constantly changing and growing. I have a rock solid commitment to the students, staff and parents of Park Trails Elementary School. I am here to serve. I will do my best to keep this school ever learning, ever changing, ever evolving, so our students, your children, will go out and change the world. My door is always open! Most Respectfully, Charles McCanna, Principal Park Trails Elementary School
WELCOME BACK TO HUNT ELEMENTARY!
e would like to welcome back our Hunt families as we look to build upon a great 2016–2017 school year. We are so proud of our academic achievement on the Florida Standards Assessments last year; finishing one percentage point from an A and maintaining or increasing our performance in every category used to calculate our school grade. This is a tribute to the hard work of our teachers, staff, students, and families. While academics are the core of what we do, we also strive to build healthy habits and mindsets in our students. This year we are excited to bring the Harmony program to our school. This platform will assist us in meeting the social-emotional needs of our students. Research shows when students’ social-emotional
needs are being met, their academic performance and sense of self-worth increases. Building an inclusive community of learners is important to what we do and we use all our resources and staff to make all students feel valued and respected at James S. Hunt Elementary. James S. Hunt wishes all Coral Springs families a successful school year! Living in Coral Springs provides us with a tremendous environment to live and raise families. We are proud to provide a high-quality education in the Coral Springs Zone and love seeing our students graduate from Coral Springs High School and head off to so many prestigious colleges to continue their education. Best wishes for a great 2017–2018 school year!

with great pride that I welcome you to the 2017/18 school year. We are excited for the first day of classes on Monday, August 21, 2017. Our District’s commitment to excellence in education continues to make BCPS a national leader. In 2017, U.S. News & World Report ranked 19 of the District’s high schools among the best in the nation, and The Washington Post recognized 25 BCPS schools in its report on America’s Most Challenging High Schools. In addition, our District recently received two impressive designations. BCPS earned prestigious Districtwide re-accreditation from AdvancEd, signifying to the community that our District is meeting the highest standards in education. Our District was also named a Great District for Great Teachers by the National Council on Teacher Quality – a true testament to our amazing teachers and our dedication to providing students with high-quality instruction. Our innovative District schools offer incredible learning opportunities and focus on ensuring all students are college and career ready. BCPS offers a wide variety of programs to meet students’ interests and help them develop a lifelong love of learning. We are engaging students in ways that motivate them to learn and excel, with rigorous academic courses; award-winning magnet and innovative programs; dual language programs to promote biliteracy and academic achievement; and chess for second grade students to develop their critical thinking skills. We are reimagining education with an emphasis on offering a variety of academic enrichment programs and elective courses at every level. We know that technology is a critical part of 21st century learning. Our schools now have more computers and technology resources to support our students’ education. Through the District’s SMART bond technology initiative, more than 83,300 new computer devices are now installed in our schools, bringing the District’s student to computer ratio to an average of 2:1, an even lower ratio than the original goal of 3.5:1. The installation of the new computers was completed ahead of schedule and under budget – and the new computers are ready for students in 2017/18.
In the upcoming school year, BCPS continues to focus on technology in the classroom to support instruction. BCPS will: • Expand our Digital Classrooms initiative, which provides personalized, blended learning environments with a one-to-one student to computer ratio. Across BCPS, schools participating in this unique program will reach more students as the program grows to include additional grade levels and classrooms. • Increase the number of schools offering the Global Scholars program to 19 schools. This program connects BCPS students with their peers around the world as they share information and learn about cultures and important global issues. • Launch new opportunities for students to participate in computer science courses. Beginning this year, middle school students at 24 schools can now take a high school level computer science course through our partnership with Code.org. Computer science courses, curriculum and activities continue to be offered at 100 percent of our schools. BCPS also offers the largest debate and JROTC programs in the country; opportunities for students to earn industry certifications in numerous career industries; advanced academic programs allowing students to earn college credits; virtual education options; Montessori programs; and award-winning music and arts programs. Our schools also provide outstanding athletic programs, with sports expanding in our middle schools in 2017/18 to include golf and cross country. Our schools are preparing students for their futures and inspiring them to follow their dreams. As we look forward to the 2017/18 school year and beyond, I encourage you to learn more about our District – and all that our schools offer – by visiting our website, browardschools.com. On behalf of our teachers, administrators and staff, we hope students enjoyed the summer break and are ready for another successful school year! Thank you for partnering with us in your child’s education.

ountdown to kickoff is the most thrilling time for a football player. The excitement of the crowd, the pride of family and the joy of the player are only a few emotions felt by football fans. These athletes come prepared to work hard and play even harder. However, Pop Warner understands that sports is only part of a child’s world and inspires their players to not only achieve on the field, but in the classroom as well. Each year Pop Warner hosts an All-American scholar weekend. Special awards are presented to deserving students in grade 8 and higher. This weekend features many festivities highlighting the amazing achievements of these all-stars. Our community is lucky to have 2 Pop Warner players selected in the top 1% of elite academic athletes from over 6100 participants. These students were recently honored in Philadelphia at a special gala to celebrate their accomplishments. They were honored by NFL personalities who presented them with special plaques and scholarships. Peter Zamora is a successful quarterback who was given the title All-American scholar in 2016. He was awarded a $2000 scholarship for his academic achievements, maintaining a 4.33 GPA while playing a tough football schedule as a quarterback. Peter says, “It was a great honor to be selected and I am grateful to God, my
parents and my teammates.” He plans to continue playing football and wants to play throughout high school, college and the NFL. He also hopes to own a restaurant one day. His most special memories of the All-American Scholar weekend were: staying at the 5 star-hotel, visiting the Rocky statue (and the movie’s famous scenes since Rocky is his favorite movie) and eating Philly steak sandwiches. Blake Ofstein is our community’s other All-American Scholar. He received both the Senior First Team National Scholar in Philadelphia and the First Team Southeast Region Scholar in Orlando, awarding him $6000 in scholarships. Blake has been playing for the Parkland Rangers for the past 2 years and has been training to continue his football career Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School. While the love of football runs through his blood, education is his highest priority. Blake has maintained straight As throughout his school career, a 4.6 GPA, and is involved in student government and volunteering in his community. Blake feels that, “The importance of teamwork, commitment, family, learning and working hard are the keys to reaching your goals.” We wish these two outstanding scholar athletes the best of luck in High School and we can’t wait to see what their future holds.

YMCA Indian Princesses Remember One of their Own
O
n May 13, 2017 the Iroquois tribe of the YMCA Indian Princess program (a Parkland father-daughter organization) remarkably raised $11,000 to benefit the Florida Initiative for Suicide Prevention. In 2013, the Iroquois tribe lost a 14 year-old member, Gabi Greenberg, to suicide. Gabi was a Parkland resident and a freshman at Stoneman Douglas High School. Her passing profoundly affected the community and her Indian Princess family, for which she had been a member for 10 years with her father Marvin and her sisters Amanda and Allie. “We loved Gabi and wanted to do something that might help other teenagers recognize the warning signs and know that help was close by,” said 13-year-old Iroquois member Carly Dempsey. The YMCA Indian Princess Program is an activity program that promotes strong bonds between fathers and daughters through shared activities such as campouts, monthly meetings, community outings, and individual and group competitions. “Our
girls effort in the planning and running of the event was inspiring; a selfless act of compassion,” said Iroquois chief Amir Littman. This was the second annual “Family Fun Night” and during this carnival theme event guests participated in outdoor activities including inflatable slides, dunk tank, pie eating contest, jousting competition, raffle, silent auction and family-style bar-b-q. Over 300 guests attended the event, which lasted well into the evening and ended with a movie under the stars. The Iroquois tribe is committed to suicide awareness through organizations like F.I.S.P (Florida Initiative for Suicide prevention). Donations can be made to F.I.S.P through their website at www.FISPonline.Org. For more information on the YMCA Indian Princess Program here in Parkland, contact Adam Miller at 943-234-5648 or Amillerlaw@gmail.com. You can also visit www.SeminoleNaation.Org.
Welcome back to another exciting school year. Based
on last year’s statewide assessments, we have increased 108 points moving our letter grade from “C” to a “B”. This year, we will also be expanding our dual language program to include both Kindergarten and first grade. The schoolwide theme for the 2017–2018 school year will be, “Team Work Makes the Dream Work!” As you know, it takes the efforts of all stakeholders working together to ensure that students are college and career ready. If you or someone you know would like to volunteer at Forest Hills Elementary this school year, they must first fill out the volunteer application online at browardschools.com/ getinvolved/application-note. On Thursday, August 17, 2017 we will have our Pre-K and Kindergarten orientations, followed by our Back to School Bash.
