Dear Readers, I hope you are enjoying the quieter, slightly more laid back pace of summer days in South Florida. Each year I find myself welcoming the break with open arms, and although eleven weeks seems like a long time to keep the kids entertained, I realize that in what seems like a blink of the eye, I’ll be busy checking homework and packing lunches again. We live in the perfect place for a STAYcation! While some are traveling to a favorite vacation spot or perhaps venturing to somewhere new, others are taking pleasure in the glory of living in South Florida. Here we have the opportunity every day to enjoy what many people across the world would consider the ideal vacation destination. We can easily hop on a cruise without the added expense of a flight, enjoy a weekend escape to the Keys or even just a day trip to the beach where you can enjoy cloudless blue skies and our crystal clear ocean. You really do not have to venture too far from your own doorstep to enjoy the Summer, there are a myriad of fun places offering entertainment for any or all of the family. Check out the content of this issue to find some of the fine establishments and businesses geared to assist you in whatever your family or personal needs may be. Please be sure to look through our events section, there are some amazing things going on around town over the next couple of months! For our athletes out there, check out some of the fun runs coming up. Perhaps encourage your child to take part in the Triathlon hosted by Davie PAL, it is tailored to fit each age group accordingly and is a fun challenge for the novice or the advanced young athlete. While you are out at the city events, look out for a Sports and Activities Directory photographer, we are out there capturing your memorable moments! Take a look on our Sports and Activities Directory smart phone APP to see hundreds of local residents out there enjoying our community. Who knows? You may already be there! While you’re in the APP, check out all the great information on some of the best venues not only in our town, but from each of the cities in which we publish. It’s a terrific resource always on hand while you are ‘on the go’. It’s FREE! Give it a try, you’ll LOVE it!!! Before we get back to folding uniforms, let’s not forget that registration for many of the fall season sports, dance and other recreational activities will be starting in August/September. Now is the time to ask your child what they desire to do and get them enrolled, don’t leave it till the last minute when we are already caught up in the homework wars. And of course, remember to get those health visits squared away, be sure to take a look through our Family Health directory to find some of the best qualified medical professionals in town. I hope you enjoy this Back to School issue featuring all of your local school’s updated information, including FCAT scores, letters from Broward County School Board members, articles from your schools, and tips on easing your child back into the school year. Looking forward to seeing you around town.
My very best to you, Nikki Reading Publisher

J u l y - S e p t e m b e r 2 014
As usual, numerous programs and activities are listed inside this issue of Sports & Activities Directory for your summer enjoyment. Let me highlight a few. The Town’s Annual 4th of July event will be outstanding as always. Starting at 3:00pm this year, there will be lots of family games and activities as well as food trucks, live music, free birthday cake and of course, the best fireworks in Broward County west of I-95.

Looking for a fall sports program for your child? Take a look at what Davie is offering for youth ages 3-15. There’s baseball for ages 5-12, cheerleading for ages 4-10, flag football for ages 5-14, soccer for ages 3-15 and smart start softball for ages 3-4. The Smart Start program is designed to teach the basic fundamentals of softball in new and innovative ways with sports equipment that allows children to feel comfortable. In addition, this program encourages parents to participate with the activities and drills that help children learn the fundamentals faster. In past issues, I have mentioned our pickle ball program at Pine Island Park, which is still well attended on Tuesday and Thursday nights and Saturday mornings. The game has become a favorite with adults of all ages in Davie. It’s played very similar to tennis, but on a court one-third the size. It’s easy to learn and the skills to play it can be mastered quickly. I personally think it would be a great game for the Town’s youth, and so this summer, staff will be offering pickle ball classes for youth ages 8 and up. If your child is looking for something other than the traditional youth sports programs offered, give the staff a call at (954) 327-3941 to find out more information on this new activity. You can also find information on other youth programs, including dance programs such as clogging, hip-hop, ballet, jazz and cheer, baton and martial arts. For adults looking to stay healthy or get healthier, there is jazzercise, which offers 14 classes a week or zumba that offers three classes a week at the Pine Island Multipurpose Center. Want to learn tennis? Davie has three tennis instructors that offer tennis lessons for all ages at Town Parks throughout the week. You’re sure to find a class that meets your busy schedule. Have you become a member of the Pine Island Fitness Center yet? Stop by and check out the renovated facility and the new fitness equipment. If you purchase a six (6) month or a twelve (12) month membership, you will also get free access to the swimming pool. That means you can take a rejuvenating swim after your workout or visit the pool anytime for recreational swimming. Speaking of swimming, the Town’s pools are open for your enjoyment. Whether you want to take a water fitness class, sign-up your child for swimming lessons or just stop by to enjoy a cool and refreshing swim, both Pine Island Park and Betty Booth Roberts pools are available to meet your swimming needs. While there, check out classes for scuba diving, aqua zumba, water aerobics, synchronized swimming and inner tube water polo. Looking to rent a facility for a wedding, family gathering or birthday party? Give the staff a call and see how easily and affordable it is to rent a room in one of our centers or a picnic shelter in one of our parks. As usual, the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department has something for everyone. Take a look inside and see what the Town of Davie is offering to help make this summer one of your best yet. As always, see you in the Parks!
Respectfully yours,
Judy Paul, Mayor Town of Davie

COMMISSIONER JaMie cURRaN
H
ello, I’m Commissioner Jamie Curran. This month I’m proud to boast about several committed students of Cooper City High School for volunteering their efforts in making a difference in Cooper City. Specifically, our young adults are promoting the following three events.
STUDENTS TAKE FLIGHT IN VOLUNTEERING:
Cooper City High School Honor Flights is an organization with the goal of fundraising money to send World War II Veterans to visit the Veteran’s Memorial in Washington, D.C. Through their hard work and dedication, Jamie Cutler & Alyssa Demetriou became the co-chairs of Honor Flights for all of Broward County. The goal of Honor Flights is to motivate every Broward County school to raise $425 each to send one Veteran to visit the Memorial. Through the diligence and hard work of Jamie & Alyssa, Cooper City High School raised $1,400 which will send 3 Veterans to visit the World War II Memorial. The remaining $125 will be donated to the Honor Flights organization. Good job Jamie & Alyssa, you should be extremely proud of your accomplishment! COOPER CITY HIGH SCHOOL “HUNGER HEROS”: Every five seconds, a child dies from hunger! This year, Cooper City High School students, Persis & Alexis Bhadha, took part in a Feeding Children Everywhere packaging event. Feeding Children Everywhere is a charity that empowers and mobilizes people to assemble healthy meals for hungry children. As a club, Cooper City High School students planned, organized and executed fundraising activities to raise money for meals for hungry children. Numerous events were held to raise money and awareness about the growing hunger crisis. On February 26, 2014, Cooper City High School hosted the Cooper City Hunger
Project; an inspiring packaging event where over 80 students, teachers, administrators, parents, City Officials and School Board Members came together to package 30,000 meals for hungry children. In total, the “Hunger Heroes” of Cooper City raised $7,500 for Feeding Children Everywhere. This project has made an impact on the food aid recipients’ lives and has opened the eyes of many individuals in Cooper City. Thank you to Persis & Alexis Bhadha for their implementation of this project and their inspiration towards the less fortunate. Persis & Alexis; you are truly Cooper City’s “Hunger Heroes”! RELAY FOR LIFE: CELEBRATE- REMEMBER- FIGHT BACK---- this is what Relay for Life celebrates. We CELEBRATE those members of our community that have survived their battle with cancer; we REMEMBER those who have lost their battle with cancer and ultimately FIGHT BACK to end cancer! Relay for Life began in 1985 by one man, Dr. Gordy Klatt, a colorectal surgeon who wanted to show what a cancer patient goes through. That year, Dr. Klatt raised over $27,000 in one night. The next year, Relay for Life took off. Dr. Klatt is now in his own battle with cancer. Logan Silverman, a sophomore at Cooper City High School, relays for his Mother. Logan challenges everyone to take five dollars, ordinarily spent on coffee, lunch or a drink, and donate it to Relay for Life. He also encouraged everyone to attend the opening ceremony of the Davie/Cooper City Relay for Life at 4:00pm, on Saturday, April 5th at Cooper City High School. Logan is to be commended for his dedication and passion towards this most important cause. I thank you for your support as I continue to serve as your Commissioner. Please feel free to contact me at any time with any questions or concerns you may have. My office number is (954) 434-4300, Ext. #260. And remember…………”Kids + Sports = Success!”

TRIATHLON OR TRY-ATHLON
IT’S ANYONE’S RACE! C
ome one, come all. Come big, come small. Your size doesn’t matter, it doesn’t matter at all! On May 25th, the Davie Police Athletic League (PAL) hosted the first of three triathlon competitions they will be having this year. Children ages 5 to 17 participated in the event receiving medals for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in a variety of age and gender categories. The first 100 participants received water bottles and race t-shirts. Long before the race begins, all participants arrive and set up their equipment. Swimsuits and caps? Check! Bike and helmet in transition area? Check! Shoes? Check! At 7:30 on the dot, the children in the youngest age group, 5-7, line up by the pool and one by one, filter their way into the early morning water to swim 25 yards. After their swim, they speedily exit the pool and make their way to the bike transition area where they dry off, put on shoes (often times suitable for both biking and running) and walk their bikes as quickly as they possibly can to the starting line of the biking portion of the race. From there, it is a half-mile ride culminating near the transition area where they drop off their bikes and then run to the finish line another half-mile away. The race is divided into four age brackets with appropriate distances of swimming, biking and running assigned to each. Parents stood alongside the pool deck, by the transition area and at the finish line to cheer on not only their child, but all others participating. Some children take part in the events for fun; others have caught the “bug” and take it more seriously. Whatever the reason for joining, all the kids have fun—even if they are using training wheels. The May event was proud to boast not only kids traveling from Central Florida and Jacksonville, but also Tampa, which is close to where the Meek and Mighty Triathlon is held. Additionally, one participant was registered with a military address and another came from Texas for this event. Upcoming triathlon events later this year will also feature a Duathlon for children ages 4-7 and will consist of a Run-Walk-Run format. In 2011, Officer Timothy Albury, previously a School Resource Officer, took the position of Director in the Davie PAL. Since then, Officer Albury has been a catalyst for a complete transformation. He wishes to improve social awareness of the PAL organization as he feels they are the “best kept secret,” a fact he wishes to change. He has initiated improvements such as replacing the laminate basketball court with wood, improving the boxing room, assembling a computer lab donated by the Town of Davie, installing flooring donated by Distinctive Carpet

and Tile, refurbishing the softball field and much of the gym equipment and painting many areas in the facility. The Davie PAL runs a variety of programs for the community, most for a nominal fee with a free membership. Programs include afterschool tutoring for students in grades 3-8 and a 9-week summer camp for just $40 a week. The PAL also runs a champion producing boxing program from beginning to advanced levels and sponsors a Youth Leadership program for teens that meets every other Thursday. The Youth Leadership group offers counseling and discusses everything from planning for college to how to effectively interview. The May Triathlon was a huge success thanks to the help of over 30 volunteers including the Davie Police Explorers, students from NSU, the Youth Leadership PAL, Runner’s Depot and Triathlete parents and coaches. If you were not able to attend the May race, there are two more races coming up in 2014, both including a Duathlon. Triathletes and Duathletes can register online at www.DaviePAL.org for the July 6th and September 7th races. Officer Albury cautioned that the slots fill quickly so early registration is recommended. Activities such as the Triathlon and the Duathlon are what keep the Davie PAL in a position to make these necessary improvements to the PAL facility and run such amazing programs. In addition to these two events, there is also the 5K/10K Davie Road Race. This event is not only a fund raiser for the Davie PAL, but schools who assemble teams can receive up to 20% of the proceeds back to their school. This event is next slotted for January 2015. For more information about the Davie PAL or how to volunteer for programs and events, please contact the Davie Police Athletic League at (954) 321-2561 or come by the facility located at 4300 S.W. 57th Terrace in Davie.

Clogging Champions C
By Shelley Jukanovich
logging is a high-energy form of folk dance that originated in the Appalachian has inspired everyone,” comments Kayla. Mountains during the mid 1700’s. The foot-tapping dance was formed when Irish, Scottish, Kayla, who now instructs the advanced team and competitive team, cannot imagine her life English, and Dutch-German settlers gathered together to celebrate their freedom. Clogging without clogging, “As a child, clogging was something that was new, exciting, and challenging was choreographed to fiddle and blue grass music and is gaining in popularity around the and that’s why I love it. Now I am the one challenging and inspiring my dancers to be their world today. Pure Dynamics Dance and Clogging Studio in Davie is carrying on this traditional absolute best. Having my dancers tell me they want to grow up and open their own clogging dance and has the only clogging team in South Florida to win the coveted Overall Grand studios or go away to college just to continue dancing is heartwarming. To think that something that has impacted my life so much is now doing the same for theirs is an amazing feeling and Champion Award. Pure Dynamics owner, Donna Aberman has been clogging with her daughter, Kayla Cioppa, I am so honored that I was able to be a part of that. At Pure Dynamics, I like to think that for eleven years. “It is something we loved doing together every week,” says Donna. “We we’re not just a studio, but a family.” This family-oriented studio allows the whole family to dance together; moms and sons, worked hard and truly enjoyed our time together. In class we weren’t just mother and daughter; dads and daughters, siblings and cousins, all dance together at Pure Dynamics. Donna and we were more like friends. We grew at the same level and performed all over locally. Looking Kayla are very proud of their studio family. Donna states, “There is no other form of dance back, it is hard to believe that this ‘hobby’ would one day become a family business!” Their that allows all ages to dance together. T
he Davie United Soccer Club has developed into a new and improved club whose successful 2013-2014 season resulted in a girls club that shined bright amongst its competitors. With several key wins under their belt, the girls are enjoying their achievements while maintaining a humble attitude and looking toward the future. When asked about the girl’s successes, Christian Goffi, President of the club, shares says he feels that the club has some very talented individuals who are committed to working hard. They also work well as a team-showing love and respect for each other. In his opinion, the club is headed in the right direction, “As a club we are still in our infancy, however, we have been able to achieve a lot of success in a short period of time. This past season we had two teams make the round of 16 in the State Cup, our U13 girls and U18 boys. The U14 girls (blue) team finished as FYSA (Florida Youth Soccer Association) State Cup Runner Ups; losing the final on penalty kicks, and our U11 girls won the Presidents Cup. So as an organization we are treading the right path with regards to the education we are providing our student athletes. The methodology that we are putting into place is already starting to reap rewards so we are extremely excited about our clubs short and long-term future.” The State Championship Cup was held in Auburndale, Florida in May. It was here that the U14 girls became the State Cup Runner-Ups. Two standout players on the U14 team are Natalie Robayna and Alexandra Mielke. Natalie’s father, Robert Robayna is very proud of his daughter, “Since Natalie first started recreational soccer at a very young age, she stood out from the other girls. She played every position and played it with passion, always striving to do her best. Her passion has been her driving force on and off the field. Not only is she a great Goal Keeper, but she is an excellent student, a team player and most importantly, a caring person.” Alexandra has been playing soccer since she was seven years old. Aly, who is one of her teams captains, plays central midfield on the U14 blue team. When asked what drives her to succeed Aly responds, “What drives me to succeed in soccer is the fact that everything I do is for the Lord. Every time I set foot on the field I am doing my best for God and no one else. The best
part of our team is the sense of community we have with each other and the commitment that we show towards others and ourselves. I also enjoy Coach Matt and Coach Christian because they are always there to help us in any way with anything. They support us as a team and always make sure that we perform as a unit. Above all else I especially enjoy the personal relationships I have with each and every girl on the team!” It was also at Auburndale that the U11 girls won the Presidents Cup. Monica Schlosser’s daughter, Karlie Schlosser, plays Defender and sometimes goalkeeper for the U11 Sharks. Monica believes that the girls’ success was a result of hard work and dedication. She also believes that the parents worked hard to support the practices and tournaments and the coaches focused on positioning and strategic planning for games and tournaments. “Parents and children are friends on and off the field so I think that was a positive aspect of the team too. I think the girls’ dedication to the game and to each other led up to the win. Playing challenging teams throughout the season helped to develop their skills and strategy. I LOVE the Davie United Soccer Club! They have a strong player ethic and provide fairness in all that they do.” In the words of Goffi, “We have given the club a facelift with regards to the image, brand and the methodology we are working to put into place. Our 360 degree program focuses not only on soccer, but on all of the intangibles that take place away from the field; academics, health, nutrition, sports psychology, etc.… These have all played a major impact on our clubs short-term success, so with the continued implementation of our 360-degree program, we are excited to see the continued growth and success of the club in the short, medium, and long-term. The club has grown in numbers (both players and teams) and we are happy to say that the town of Davie now has an extremely good, progressive soccer program available to the community.” The Davie United Sharks practice four days a week with games and tournaments on the weekends. With passionate coaches and a devoted supporting cast, the Davie United Soccer Club is destined for greatness. The Davie Sharks Girls Shine, and the town of Davie is proud of their Premier Soccer Club. For more information on Davie United Soccer Club visit their website at www.daviesharks.com.

TIME TO DUST OFF THE BACKPACKS By Jodi Cohen, MSEd; Director of Early Childhood; Temple Dor Dorim
I walked into my son’s room the
other day and stepping over the piles that in my teenager’s room seemed to multiply like gremlins that had been watered, I couldn’t help but notice tucked into the far corner of the room Jeff’s backpack from the last day of school. It had sat there, frozen in time, untouched and unpacked like a permanent fixture since the very first day of summer break. It was only the end of June and in my mind summer was just beginning, but in reality I knew it was already flying by...camp was well underway, we had already taken one of our weeks of summer vacation and the movies that were soon to be released “this coming summer” were already a few weeks old in the theater. I looked down at my arms and realized my base tan was well underway. I had a flashback to last summer and felt a bout of deja vu. Hadn’t I been here before? The slouched over backpack thrown to the side without a second thought seemed oddly familiar. Back to school anxiety suddenly swirled around me like a flash mob in my mind. The thoughts of long lines at Office Depot, the search for the acceptable backpack or lunchbox and the multiple trips to Target came rushing in like the crowd at Sawgrass Mall at Midnight on Thanksgiving. Between my three children there would be 15-20
bits of different colored papers listing requested items from teachers of which my odds for winning the lottery were greater than my chances of finding. If we thought about it as parents each one of the things we do to get our children ready for school isn’t overwhelming. It’s the 72-hour mad dash before school opens that’s overwhelming. It was then and there that I made a conscious decision. Last summer I had looked away for the backpack that stared at me from the corner, but this year I was going to stare right back. Oh yeah. That’s right. A full head-on, who would blink first staring contest. I was determined to win. Time to dust off the backpack and show ‘em who’s boss. Only it wasn’t that easy. How could I be thinking No. 2 pencils and neon dry erase markers when I was still thinking bathing suits and towels? My mind was still on frozen drinks and summer bar-b-ques, not on searching for calculators that exceeded NASA scientist requirements. My toes were still in sand, eyes on ocean, not on the prettiest patterned tissue box my daughter would want me to send in on the first day of school...but I was determined. This year I vowed to be back to school ready. I encourage you to do the same. I know, I’d rather live in that pretty little world called summer, too....non rushed days, and poolside with the kids late afternoons, but revel in the feeling of the 72...the 3 days before school when they’ll all be rushing and you’ll be savoring the last few delicious days of summer.

very Saturday night, from sunset to midnight, people of all ages gather at Fox Observatory at Markham Park to get a closer look at the moon and stars. On a clear night, there may be as many as 10 telescopes set up. The Observatory, which is free and open to the public, remains one of Broward County’s best kept secrets. “Visitors can see things they may not have seen in their entire lives,” said Monroe Pattillo, Director of the Observatory. “Through August, they will be able to see the ring of Saturn through the telescope.” Members of the South Florida Amateur Astronomers Association (SFAAA) operate the Observatory. They do not represent NASA or any educational institution, scientific organization or professional astronomy group. They are simply a group of people that meet on Saturday nights to share their passion for the universe with each other and anyone else who is interested. On rainy or cloudy nights, SFAAA members provide astronomy-based presentations and videos at the Fox Observatory. On clear nights, they are available to teach visitors how to use the sophisticated telescopic equipment that is housed there. Some of it includes: a 14-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain @ F/10, a 6” Brandon Refractor, and three Dobsonian reflecting telescopes; with one as large as 13” in diameter. Both Schmidt-Cassegrains can be fitted with CCD imagers that offset the effects of light pollution. In addition, many SFAAA members bring their own telescopes. Brian Henry brought his kids to the Observatory. They were learning about the solar system in school and he wanted them to see it first-hand. “It is incredible how much you can see with the high-powered equipment at the Observatory,” said Henry. “My kids were fascinated by the moon and had so many questions for the SFAAA volunteers. When they left, they both said they wanted to become astronomers.” After visiting the Fox Observatory, Scott Stranahan decided to purchase his own telescope. He brought it with him on a Saturday night and the SFAAA volunteers helped him align it. “The volunteers were so helpful,” said Stranahan. “I have learned so much from visiting the Observatory. I am excited to be able to explore the moon from home during the week.” Founded in 1965, the SFAAA is a nonprofit organization that includes members who are new to the hobby, as well as long time observing veterans. The club meets at 7:30pm on the first Thursday of every month. Most meetings are open to the public; however there are some members-only events. Members share their equipment and knowledge with the general
public on Saturday nights, as well as during special group presentations at five Broward County libraries, Fern Forest Nature Center, local schools and more. The membership fee of $20 covers the entire family and includes the SFAAA’s monthly electronic newsletter, as well as access to the “members only” area on the website. Members can participate in activities that include learning to use a telescope, video and slide shows, star parties, Astronomy Day, CCD imaging, observatory operations and special projects. In addition, SFAAA maintains a Yahoo Group where members can communicate with each other to coordinate last minute trips to local dark sky locations, exchange news, ask questions, and share experiences in astronomy. The club’s website also provides a forum for students, teachers and the general public to “ask an amateur astronomer” a question - no matter how big or small. If SFAAA members do not know the answer, they will help find it. The Fox Observatory is located in Markham Park, 16001 W State Rd 84, in Sunrise. Once inside the park, turn left at the 4-way stop, take the first right, and go to the end of the circle. The observatory is the flat roof building with the red lights. For information, visit www.sfaaa.com or call (954) 384-0442.

Why Am I Feeling This Way? By Dr. Scott Christian, Psy.D., Licensed Psychologist

fter a number of years of treating individuals, you can imagine that I have been asked many different questions about emotions. How these questions are asked can be disguised by individual differences in thought and action, but two basic questions consistently resurface: (1) why am I feeling this way? and (2) How can I feel better? In this article, Question 1 will be addressed, with Question 2 to be addressed within the next publication.
Question 1: Why am I feeling this way? The answer to this question lies within the relationship between emotional education, emotional management, and psychological self-trust. More specifically, a misunderstanding of our couples emotions can lead to inefficient, inadvertent emotional patterns I term “emotional loitering” (holding on to an emotion past the point of health and productivity). Follow me through this explanative description, if you will. We tend to get annoyed with anyone or anything that wears out its welcome, be it a fly, a guy, or a thumb in your eye. These tedious situations grate on our nerves (i.e. emotions) because our mind has learned they do not lead to promoting healthy, physical or psychological comfort. Our response? We likely put our foot down and change the situation to remove the “pain” and return to a healthier state of mind and being. Emotional loitering produces similar discomfort, the solution often seems confusing. By design, our emotions are not meant to be “held” for too long at any one time. Sure we can experience them for a while, sometimes quite a while, but too long and the consequences of enduring emotional pain and eventually mental fatigue and exhaustion set in. At this point we likely feel helpless and ineffective. Usually not intentional, we learn to misuse our emotions until they betray us, which hinders adapting and functioning purposefully, let alone happily. Consider a very similar example dealing with sustained muscular contraction: without adequate rest, ever-increasing physical pain leads to physical fatigue, eventually rendering the muscle fatigued, sometimes injured, and usually ineffective for a period of time.
As a survival strategy, avoiding physical pain (e.g. spraining an ankle) tends to work well because we react immediately by retracting and avoiding the activity and allowing time to rest and recover. Almost automatically, we TRUST our pain, listen to it, and take personal responsibility by acting appropriately to protect our being. As such we are learning to avoid what previously caused us harm and consequently set a boundary to effectively avoid it. But boy oh boy, this seems quite a bit trickier when it comes to our emotions, doesn’t it? Unless instructed differently, and from a very early age, we often learn about emotions passively and somewhat “instinctually” through our environment and our caretakers. Unfortunately many people learn to avoid emotions, associating them with pain and avoidance, and fail to relearn effective ways to respond and resolve them. Still, these patterns can work for quite a while unless, just like a muscle, they become rigid and inflexible and lose their utility, thus becoming problematic. Before they become overwhelming, we may unknowingly “run on an emotional sprain,” blaming someone else for the pain while we continue to run with them draped on our back, and then wonder why the hurt steadily worsens until we eventually collapse in exhaustion. This metaphor is in no way intended to trivialize emotional pain, but instead to elucidate the need for productive change. Even if you struggle with recognizing the ineffective pattern, it does not mean that you can’t feel better. It simply means you haven’t quite found the right solution yet and maybe a little help is needed. Lingering emotional distress is remarkably avoidable with a relatively small amount of re-education and consistent practice. In the next issue, I will continue this article and address the second topic by answering the question, “How can I feel better?” Dr. Christian has maintained a successful independent private practice in Weston, Florida for almost 10 years. He is located at 2685 Executive Park Drive, Suite #4, Weston, FL, 33331. Seniors Applying to College: I
You Need a Plan!
f you are a high school senior or the parent of a high school senior, you probably are already being inundated by the ongoing barrage of questions from well-meaning peers, family members, and teachers about applying to college and what you have and have not done. No one ever said applying to college is effortless and stress-free, but it can be manageable with a plan of action. The best response to the ongoing questions is to be organized. Below I have outlined ten things to help you and your child stay on track. 1. In early August, register for an additional ACT and SAT. 2. Have your child ask themselves this key question: What does my social media information say about me? Any material that not does show oneself in a positive light should be erased immediately. 3. Start the personal essay early. This is the place where a student can showcase their voice and let the college admission representatives understand their passion, growth, and real self. Do not forget to proofread before submitting. 4. Stay on top of deadlines for the application, as well as for scholarships. There are times when a college application has to be submitted earlier than the regular deadline to qualify for certain scholarships. 5. Know the requirements for each college. A great way to keep track of this is with a spreadsheet detailing deadlines and information required, such as; transcript, letters of recommendation, supplemental essays, resume, etc. 6. The high school senior is responsible for sending their official test scores from the testing agency to colleges, not the college counselor. Do not forget this piece of the process. 7. Senior year is still important academically. When a senior is accepted to a college or receives a scholarship, it is conditional. Colleges and
By Mellesia Nelson Assistant Principal The Sagemont School
universities have the right to rescind a decision if the accepted student does not have the same academic standing as when they were accepted. Seniors, bottom line...do not lose focus as the year progresses. The road may seem long at times, but hang in there, you have made it this far. 8. Once you have applied to the colleges of choice, do not forget to check your e-mail and online portals for updates. No system is perfect and documents can go missing, which means it is important to always check and follow-up in a timely manner. 9. Keep an open mind. Apply to a variety of schools where you would be happy for the next four years, as scholarship and financial aid will vary. Find the right fit school for you by truly researching the opportunities present for you to succeed in and out of the classroom. 10. Start EARLY. Summer break before the senior year is the ideal time to work on essays, prep a bit more for the standardized exams, and finalize your plan of action. Seniors, never be afraid to show your passion and be confident. Start early and plan ahead and you will surely decrease the stress level and be ready to answer the many questions that come your way about the future.

2 months before school starts q Schedule physical examinations as needed, and don’t forget a vision check every year. q Send or bring necessary forms to the doctor. q Review summer reading lists and any other school packets that the kids need to complete over the summer. Schedule time to visit library/bookstore and get necessary books. q If you have not done so already, sign up your kids for fall sports and after-school activities. q Seniors should be working on college essays, researching scholarships and touring colleges and universities. q Sophomores & Juniors should be practicing for SATs and ACTs. 6 weeks before school starts q Sort through the kids’ fall clothing; donate or hand down what does not fit. q Sit down with your planner and write in the entire school calendar for all schools attended by your children. q Also, put all sports practices, games, and other after-school activities in the planner. Budget a full hour to complete this task! 1 month before school starts q Purchase backpacks, lunchboxes, and water bottles as needed. q Purchase basic wardrobe necessities for each child as needed. q Check progress on summer reading and math packets. q Finalize afterschool program schedules and transportation needs. q Find out college application deadlines. 3 weeks before school starts q Gather your hubby’s old shirts for art smocks; place in backpacks. q Set up a “launch pad” in a convenient location near the door in your house. Get one basket or crate for each child; use these baskets for your kids’ belongings, e.g. books, hat, gloves, sports equipment. q Purchase uniforms if necessary, or shop for school clothes.
2 weeks before school starts q Start getting your kids back on their school year bedtime routine, including setting aside time for reading if you have let that slip over the summer. q Get your babysitter schedule set up in advance so you have time in your schedule to work out, run errands, have date night with your hubby, and enjoy an occasional well-deserved girls’ night out! q Check progress on summer reading and math packets. If necessary, set aside time each day to complete summer work. 1 week before school starts q Schedule kids’ haircuts as needed. q Do a trial walk with your child to the school or bus stop or ride your bikes to school to see how long it takes. q Make a “favorite foods” list for each of your children. Make sure to note what they like best for lunch, snacks, and dinner so that you’ll remember those foods at the grocery store. q Bulk shopping: visit your local big box retailer and stock up on non-perishable basics like juice/milk boxes, napkins, sandwich bags, and snack foods like pretzels. You can also stock up there on supplies like permanent markers, pencils, pens, tissues, and looseleaf paper. 5 days before school starts q Gather supplies for you: scented candles for after-school stress relief; lined journals for recording notes and thoughts; big sunglasses and tissues if you are anticipating an emotional first day of school! q Make sure your camera is charged and ready for the first day of school. 3 days before school starts q Plan meals for the first week of school. q Grocery shopping: Be sure to make a list; include items needed for your meal plan and from your child(ren)’s “favorite foods” list. 1 day before school starts q Prepare lunches and snacks for the first day of school q Pack supplies in backpacks q Lay out clothes for first day of school q Set alarm clocks

T
he first few years of life are critical for a child’s cognitive development and learning. Silver Ridge Elementary School offers a wonderful preschool program! We have two integrated classrooms that are composed of typically developing children with children in our Exceptional Student Education program. While engaged in this interactive environment, all of the children develop academic, social, adaptive, and communication skills by working together. The students participate in a variety of lessons including science experiments, arts/crafts, book studies, and literacy activities. Using the Letter People for Preschool curriculum, each letter is brought to life through thematic instruction. Throughout the day, each center is based around the Letter People curriculum. The classes cook, write, illustrate, discover, and play all while experiencing activities based on the letter/theme of the week. The children also participate in special activities such as Octoberfest, Turkey Trot, Bicycle Rodeo, Dr. Seuss’ Birthday, Earth Day beautification, swimming lessons at Bamford Pool,
and a Family Day celebration. There are many hands-on experiences infused into the curriculum. These include observing the life cycle of butterflies and ladybugs, erupting volcanoes, and experiments with the properties of matter. Even though the children think they are playing, every activity has an educational purpose. For example, while cooking, the children are engaged in measuring, sorting, categorizing, sequencing, and hypothesizing. While working on pre-writing skills, they use a variety of mediums such as finger paint, shaving cream, yarn, playdoh, and chalk. For those moving on to Kindergarten, there is a “bridging ceremony” at the end of the year to signify their completion of the preschool curriculum. There are many benefits to participating in our integrated preschool program. The students become very familiar with the campus, the staff, and the routine of the school day. This leads to a successful transition to kindergarten! For more information about our preschool program at Silver Ridge Elementary, please call our front office at (754) 323-7500.

hat is the mission which every Broward County Public School is focused on achieving! As the parent of three children in elementary and middle school, with different strengths and interests, I understand how important it is that we provide our students with diverse opportunities which help them to be motivated to apply themselves and reach their individual, highest potential. This year Broward County Public Schools is offering opportunities that we haven’t seen before. For the very first time, over 90% of our elementary schools will be offering the First Move Chess program to our 2nd and 3rd grade classes. Each student will receive lessons in how to play chess, receive a free chess set and be given the opportunity to participate in chess competitions. Additionally, schools will be continuing to implement the Digital 5 program in which approximately 3,200 fifth grade students from 27 elementary schools across the District receive personalized learning utilizing laptops, digital resources, and online instructional materials. Code.org, which selected Broward as the only school district in Florida to participate in their unique program, was first instituted in our elementary through high schools in the 2013-2014 school year. Continuing our partnership with Code.org provides expanded computer science programming instruction throughout students’ educational experience allowing them to garner a competitive edge among their peers for high-demand and high-salary computing professions. This is critical as, in the year 2020, it is estimated that there will be one million more computer
science jobs than computer science students. On the heels of Broward County Public Schools being awarded the national District Sustainability Award and 48 of our schools being honored with Green Ribbons from the U.S. Department of Education, students are being awarded an ever-expanding opportunity to increase Eco-Awareness through expanded recycling programs, community gardens and energy conversation initiatives. The School Board is making a considerable investment in the Arts throughout the 2014-2015 school year. The District is currently purchasing new and repairing existing musical instruments while also supporting its drama programs through the purchase of staging equipment, lighting and sound equipment and other capital improvements which will allow our students to flourish in their personal development through exposure to the Arts. Expanded sporting programs, at the middle school level, further allows us to reach each child by tapping into the activities which they are passionate about and motivate them which will result in their further engagement in success in-and-out of the classroom. I hope you will join us for the upcoming Broward County Public School’s 3rd Annual Ed Talk discussions that are focused on shaping the District’s priorities, which allow us to continue to strive for the highest-quality school system for our Broward County children. Visit www.browardschools.com to find the location and time for the Ed Talk event that will occur this Fall. Our entire community must be engaged to ensure that we attain our goal of allowing every child to reach their highest potential!
Fox Trail Elementary A
t Fox Trail Elementary, we strive for excellence for our students and staff. There are a plethora of fun activities for all ages, which include many programs geared towards learning and promoting intellectual growth among young children. This school has been “A” rated for the past fourteen years with the help of a dedicated and 100% highly qualified staff. Many of our staff members have advanced degrees and are National Board Certified, which in turn benefits our students. Furthermore, during the 2013-2014 school year, we qualified for the Golden School Award for our outstanding parent and volunteer support system. These individuals logged in more than 3,000 hours to assist students. Our PTSA works diligently throughout the year to assist classroom teachers and provide our school with programs such as the “Meet the Masters” art initiative, where students are instructed in the areas of watercolor and still life paintings. Fox Trail is a huge supporter of The Dan Marino Autism Walk, the Harvest Drive and the uniform exchange, which provides additional support for our children and their families. For the past several years, we have focused on providing technology to our students.
In addition to our active computer lab, classroom laptop carts are available, enabling every student to be connected in their classrooms to do research and complete project-based learning activities. Every classroom has a Promethean Board allowing for interactive instruction. Lastly, there are numerous programs each year that students participate in. Our chorus and instrumental presentations feature over 300 children in the winter and spring concerts. Math, Science, and Reading Camps promote extra learning assistance for students. Meanwhile, there are monthly “Kids of Character” awards and celebrations that focus on traits such as respect, honesty, and citizenship. Students participate in the WFTN Television Studio, which broadcasts each morning. Our Science Lab teacher actually attended Space Camp! He gives students the opportunity to use technology and experiments to delve into science. We have a Storybook/Vocabulary Parade, a Wax Museum of historical figures, Author’s Teas, family nights at Barnes & Noble and Winn Dixie…what a great place to learn! Come join or Fox Trail Family!

t’s the middle of summer break; your children are busy playing sports, vacationing with family or friends, taking swim or craft classes, or maybe just sleeping in a little later than usual. You want your children to enjoy their time learning new things, but you need to remember that your home, not unlike school, is also their learning environment. Remember the adage, “Use it or lose it“? It is very important that you help your children retain their reading and writing skills by using them throughout the summer as they would during the academic year. To maintain these skills, you must make sure your children have opportunities to understand how these skills interact in daily activities and practice them as often as possible. Family Reading Circles, Talk Fests, and Family Storyteller Night are just a few ways you can promote your children’s skill levels. Family Reading Circles are a wonderful way to support reading, comprehension, speaking and listening skills. Learn how your children feel about different kinds of stories. If you have busy schedules, try to plan your Family Reading Circle twice a week if possible, and for at least a half hour to an hour. Each family member takes a turn choosing and reading a book, eBook, newspaper, or magazine article to other family members, and then everyone takes turns asking questions about the story. Is the story real or imagined? Is it funny or sad? Did certain characters stand out above others? Are there any life lessons to be learned? Can you or would you change the story beginning or ending and if so, why? Talk Fests are a good time to talk about movies or videos your family has watched together. Similar to your Reading Circle, have everyone take turns discussing the movie’s story and characters, etc. To make it fun and interesting, act out the character

parts that stood out in the movie. Family Storyteller Night is another fun event that you can enjoy and participate in with your children. Everyone gets a chance to talk about the day’s events, and then each chooses one event to record in their own words on a recording device. Afterwards, or at a later time, you can help them to write their story to put in a special memory folder. We hope that these suggestions encourage you to help your children maintain their skills while engaging in special, quality family time. We are available to assist you in any way we can. We are located at 4801 S. University Dr. #209B, Davie. Reach us at (954) 680-4874 and at www.davietutoryou.com.

he Sagemont School embraces the arts and has built a home to nurture the talents of its students and community! The Sagemont School is proud to announce the completion and grand opening of their 10,000 square foot Visual & Performing Arts Center this August. The state-of-the art facility has been in the planning since January 2013 and will consist of two music rooms, two art rooms, and a Blackbox Theater that will accommodate an audience of up to 150 people with flexible seating. When most public schools are not able to find funding for the arts, The Sagemont School is finding ways to boost education in the arts. “Over 80 percent for our student population participates in the arts. We find that the students grow in numerous ways by branching out into “Right Brain” thinking processes,” said Gayle Iacono, Principal at the Upper School Campus. “There is so much to be gained by participating in the arts. The arts require many important life skills including dedication, multiple motor skills, discipline, courage, self-esteem and team work,” she continued. The student body at Sagemont has been no stranger education in the arts, to the arts education, and this new facility will cultivate even more opportunities to advance their talents and likely draw in even more talented students from the surrounding community. Recently, Sagemont students were honored with several South Florida Cappies nominations. Angel Martinez received South Florida Cappies nominations for Best Lead Actress in a Musical for her performance as Jo March in “Little Women.” The role was a milestone for Angel, who has participated in The Sagemont School theatre program since the 4th grade! Maria Moncaliano won the Cappie for Senior Critic for her outstanding journalism as a student theatre critic. Bailey Jones and her crew, which included Tyler Jones, Rebecca Jordan, Daniel Entenberg, and Marcella Vargas, received a nomination for Best Props for the production of “Little Women.” Sagemont’s Junior Thespians Troupe competed at the State competition and brought home a total 3 Superiors and 6
Excellents! 6th grade student Zachary Dishinger received the Best of Show award for his Solo Musical Performance. In addition to the many awards in theater, Sagemont students also participate in their own arts showcase where all of the arts programs are featured and recognized. Sagemont is planning a family Gala Grand Opening Event on November 15th that will take the form of an Upper School Campus Visual & Performing Arts Festival. The event will include dramatic vignettes presented in the black box theater, musical pieces performed in several venues, a Rock Band performance & Art Walk. The community will be enlisted for support to include food tastings & more. With the new facility will come new and more advanced programs in music, theater and art. “It is our goal to provide students with a well-rounded learning environment that is enriched through exposure to visual and performing arts. Sagemont’s visual and performing arts programs offer learning opportunities for the novice, advanced, and competitive student,” said Principal Iacono. The Drama Instructor, Elizabeth Garrard, will incorporate much more behind the scenes production instruction now that they will have our own theater to work with during classroom hours. In addition to the facility being of use to the students, they are planning to rent space to community theater groups on weekend and the summer when not in use. The Sagemont School’s Visual Arts & Performing Arts Center will be located on the Upper School Campus at 2585 Glades Circle in Weston. hen Mrs. Bonnie Marks presented the Social Studies assignment, how did her 4th graders respond? Well let’s say “Celebrate Me” was an experience that our children will not forget. This Social Studies assignment was a “hands-on project”. The goal was to motivate students to learn about themselves and in turn, share experiences with their classmates, their families and their community. Students were able to climb into an imaginary time machine and experience how life was for their relatives as a child here or in another land. The 4th grade class embraced the project by collecting facts and information about their backgrounds. They used their family history to create a family tree, conducted research online and interviewed family members. They collected, photographs, visas, flags, souvenirs and items that have been passed down from generation to generation. One student had a copy of their great grandparents’ Ellis Island Immigration Record. After a month full of wonderful presentations, the students’ families were invited to participate in a marvelous finale - a

rt and education have again merged at Nova Eisenhower Elementary School. The renowned Venezuelan artist, Sergio Lazo, has donated his time and talent to paint a one-of-a-kind mural on the front wall of Nova Eisenhower. The colorful children and animals depicted in the mural add a beautiful new element to the school facade. Principal Carol Lesser, who is an especially beloved leader, is one of the stars of the new mural. The mural reminds the students each day of the importance of art in education, as well as that their principal recognizes and understands the vitality of art as part of the elementary curriculum. The mural is the second generous donation Mr. Lazo has made to Nova Eisenhower. In January, the artist came to Nova Eisenhower, gave a presentation about himself and his work, and then painted a picture with the students present at the event. The students got to contribute to the final picture by painting portions with Mr. Lazo. He then donated the finished painting to the school, where it is currently on display in the front office. At that time, Mr. Lazo also donated one of his brightly colored textured paintings of a guitar to the school. The donated guitar painting was sold during a silent auction that lasted several weeks and generated a multitude of offers. Ultimately, the proceeds were used to purchase electronic equipment that has been installed in the cafeteria
cultural event that included savory foods from around the world. Each child was asked to bring a dish and dessert representing his/her ancestral countries, enabling them to have a unique experience of tasting foods without leaving their own backyard. The culmination included the students singing “Love in Any Language”. They sang and signed the words as well. Ms. Susan Lehrman, a retired 4th grade teacher at Hawkes Bluff, assisted the students. One of the students played an Irish Jig on his violin as the students danced. What a delight to see the children wearing clothing that represented their cultural heritage, laughing and dancing all while learning. Each student was able to acknowledge where they came from, while respecting and appreciating the differences in others. Hats off to Mrs. Bonnie Marks who showed her students that learning doesn’t have to come just from textbooks. Thank you for caring so much for your students and truly making a difference! Thank you Ms. George and Mrs. Cunningham for allowing this wonderful event to take place at Hawkes Bluff Elementary.
for the benefit of all students of Nova Eisenhower. Although originally from Venezuela, Mr. Lazo has resided in Miami since 1994. He has been developing his artistic skills and talents since early childhood, which contributes to his perspective that it is essential to encourage the creativity and artistic talent of elementary aged children. Mr. Lazo eventually went to graphic design school in Caracas, but he still considers himself to be primarily self-taught because of his many prior years of experimenting with art independently throughout his childhood. Music plays a dominant role in most of the artist’s work, with children and animals also present in many of his dynamic paintings.

s summer nears its end, it is time to pack the beach towels and pack up the school supplies. A new school year is just around the corner! At Cooper City Elementary, our staff has been at work all summer ensuring our school year starts off right. Our partnership with parents is a vital component to our success. Therefore, we’d like to offer 5 tips to assist our families with a successful start for the 2014/15 school year. 1. Set Goals. Converse with your child about his/her strengths and weaknesses. Guide your child to set obtainable goals and encourage him/her to persevere throughout the year. Frequently monitor progress toward the goals, celebrate successes and reset new goals as needed. 2. Get Involved. Parent involvement is a critical component to your child’s success. Involvement can be as simple as checking your child’s agenda on a daily basis or reading with your child nightly. Our Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) hosts many evening school events. We love to see our families involved! 3. Provide resources at home learning. Provide books and magazines at your child’s Lexile level and ensure your child reads every day, as well providing access to technology in order to support academic learning. Engage your child in authentic learning experiences such as cooking, gardening and explorative nature walks that can reinforce math, science, problem solving and critical thinking skills. 4. Communicate. Talk to your child about their learning. Call or email your child’s teachers to address concerns or when you have questions. Your child’s teacher is your first line of communication. Communicating frequently with your child’s teacher demonstrates a commitment to your child’s education. Always feel free to contact school administration, support team members or the Parent Teacher Organization
if you have questions or concerns. 5. Support school rules and goals. We need your help. Supporting school rules, discipline, procedures, curriculum and goals contributes to a highly effective school. Parent input and participation in school rules and goals is always welcomed and valued. Some of the key people in our exceptional team include: • Mrs. Goltz, Literacy Coach, provides assistance with academic matters, questions regarding at-home support and instructional interventions. • Ms. Cabrera, School Guidance Counselor, provides assistance with family resources, academic matters and social and emotional affairs. • Mrs. Garica, Exceptional Student Education Specialist, provides assistance with Individual Education Plans, 504 plans, gifted students and evaluations. • Mrs. Wagner, Assistant Principal, is available to provide any support necessary to ensure educational excellence. • Mr. Sciullo, School Principal, provides leadership in all aspects of school governance. We can be reached at (754) 323-5200. We look forward to seeing you on August 15th at Meet and Greet. Please be sure to introduce yourself if you are a new Cooper City Cub! WeLcOMe back TO SchOOL! Patricia Good; Chair, Broward County School Board, District 2
I
t is my hope that you are enjoying a relaxing summer. Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) is committed to educating all students to reach their highest potential. As the Chair of the School Board of Broward County and the Board Member representing District 2, I have had the pleasure of visiting many schools - witnessing first-hand our students enjoying much success. Over 15,000 high school students and 8,300 middle school students participate in organized school system sports. It is exciting to report that fifty percent of our athletes are female. With the recent addition of girls flag football and competitive cheerleading, the school system is a recognized national leader in gender equity, ensuring equal opportunities for our female athletes. Many of our students volunteered countless hours, giving back to their schools
and their communities, demonstrating a true commitment to the betterment of others. This was truly evident by the numerous events held at our schools. Relay for Life events raised funds for cancer research, the DiaBEAT This! event allowed students to have fun and raise funds for diabetes research, and a food-packing event provided 15,000 meals for orphaned/homeless children in the USA. We celebrated many successes in the 2013-14 school year and I would like to thank our dedicated teachers, support staff, school administrators, parents and community partners for making that possible. It is the goal of BCPS to ensure that every student receives the very best instruction in pursuit of becoming a well-rounded individual. As the 2014-2015 school year begins, I look forward to another amazing year as we continue to strive to achieve that goal. Enjoy these last days of summer. I look forward to seeing you in the upcoming school year!

For the past TEN years, A World of Knowledge
Learning Center has provided a top quality education program and receives high ratings from Principals, Teachers and Parents in the communities of Miramar and Pembroke Pines. This August, A World of Knowledge opens a new location next to Old Davie School on Griffin Road, in Davie, to give the residents of Cooper City and Davie an opportunity to experience the top rated and unique curriculum offered at the center. The center is Gold Seal and APPLE Accredited, with state certified and experienced teachers. Our mission is to engage young children in an Accelerated Learning Program where they can think, explore and create while becoming successful, independent learners. Throughout the day, the children are engaged in multicultural lessons helping them become aware of their surroundings. We welcome children from all parts of the world and our demographics will show how our school is truly a multicultural place to learn. Our classrooms are given the names of the continents and have large painted murals of different destinations/landmarks from around the world. At A World of Knowledge Learning Center, we want to bring the world to the child and awaken their appreciation
and respect for the world, themselves and others. We offer a safe and nurturing environment for the children. While the young children sing, play, interact and explore, they are embracing new concepts that will help guide them to flourish in the future. The staff at A World of Knowledge understands that children have different learning abilities and one method of teaching will not meet the needs of every child. This is why the staff uses multiple learning tools to help each child. In addition, the Owner developed a unique curriculum to compliment the researched-based, creative curriculum used at the school, introducing Social Studies and World Geography to young children every day. Children as young as 3 years old, will learn about different cultures and the world we live in. Elizabeth Gonzalez, the owner of A World of Knowledge says, “Though learning the ABC’s and 123’s play an important role in the academic success of a child, we understand the importance of developing good character traits as well as strong social and emotional skills for the young children. Our staff takes pride in helping children achieve success in all areas of development, while working with them individually.” For more information contact us at (954) 430-7707
