Dear Readers,

It’s hard to believe that summer is right around the corner already! The end of the school year is a busy time for families—with all the testing, graduations, award ceremonies and class parties, it can leave us slightly frazzled and more than ready for the summer break. The Sports and Activities Team is right there with you…Bring it on! Life is much more mellow when we don’t have the stresses of homework assignments, time constraints and sleep deprivation. Summer is a time for some much needed rest and recreation, and bucket loads of FUN! We’re springing into action with this issue of Sports & Activities Directory—our biggest and most anticipated issue of the year—our summer camp issue! Keeping our kids entertained and their young minds alert has never been easier! We’ve done the research for you and have found the best summer camps around. Our directory is loaded with all sorts of unique programs for every age— from tot to teen! There are specialty camps for the athlete, dancer, animal lover, brainiac and more. Perhaps your child would like to try their hand at something new or maybe just enjoy the social aspect of summer camp fun. Either way, one thing is certain, your child will be making new friends and building memories that will last a lifetime. Camps fill up quickly so early camp registration is suggested. Be sure to mention that you found them through Sports & Activities Directory, as many of them offer discounted special rates and sometimes even freebies to our readers! In our pages ahead, you will find not only an assortment of great summer camps, but also a vast array of fun events, venues, summer sports and activities for the whole family. Our health section boasts a broad assortment of local fitness facilities to help keep bodies and minds strong and healthy, while our academic segment showcases our local schools and highlights some of the great things they are accomplishing. In light of the tragic event at Marjory Stoneman Douglas on February 14th, our team is heartbroken for those families who lost their loved ones. We hope that together, our community can be a part of finding a resolution to make our schools a safe environment in which to learn. Please take a moment to view the tribute paintings by Parkland artist and mom, Nava Lundy, on page 59. Thank you, Nava, for allowing us to publish your beautiful work, which memorializes and celebrates the lives of the students, teacher and coaches that tragically lost their lives at Marjory Stoneman Douglas. Our next issue of Sports & Activities Directory will not reach your hands until school begins again on Wednesday, August 15th. Until then, I hope that you enjoy this Summer Camp issue and will take advantage of the research we have done for you. We strive to provide you with enough information so that you can spend less time researching and more time relishing in quality family moments.

My very best to you,

Nikki Reading

Hello Davie Residents,

10

Can you believe that another school year is coming to an end? As we look forward to the summer there are many great programs, activities and events for all of the Town of Davie residents to enjoy! I encourage everyone to escape the heat this summer at one of our Town of Davie pools or the Shenandoah Park splash pad. The Pine Island Pool is open daily for camp field trips, lap swimming, and open recreational swimming. We also have a wonderful swim program for anyone that wants to learn to swim—it is never too early to teach your children how to swim. We start our “Mommy and Me” classes at 6 months old! The Betty Booth Roberts pool will re-open on the weekends beginning Memorial Day weekend, and weekdays beginning June 11th. The new waterslides are sure to provide a thrill for children. If your child is unable to pass the swim test to use the slides, our Davie Lifeguards can enroll them in a free Swim-to-Slide program where they will be taught basic swimming techniques and important water safety skills. Upon graduation from the program, they will be able to use our two water slides. Our Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department has a great line-up of programs and events for all to enjoy. On May 11th, at 6:00pm, join us for the new Sounds of the Town Concert Series at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. The arena is covered and there will be live music, food trucks, children’s activities and adult games, too. The event will also coincide with the Old Davie School House’s 100 Year Anniversary. Join the Old Davie School on Thursday, May 10th, for their 100 Year Gala; Friday, May 11th, for the Sounds of the Town Concert; and Saturday, May 12th, for the 100 Years Music and Arts Festival. On May 28th, join the Town of Davie and the Boy Scouts of America South Florida Council, as we honor our fallen heroes during our annual Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony. The parade will begin at 10:00am and will head east from the Fire Station on Orange Drive to SW 65th Way, and will continue north to the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds— where the ceremony will begin immediately following the parade. On June 2nd, the annual Take-A-Kid Fishin’ Rodeo will once again be held at the Town of Davie Golf and Country Club from 8:00am – 10:00am. This is a wonderful event for both children and parents alike, as the lake on the driving range is full of fish! This fishing rodeo is a catch and release event where we focus on conservation and sportsmanship. On July 4th, join us for the best fireworks in Broward as we celebrate America’s 242nd birthday during our annual Fun on the 4th Independence Day Celebration, at the Bamford Sports Complex! Festivities will kick off at the Pine Island Pool from 10:00am – 4:00pm with free swimming, fun foam spray from the Davie Fire Department, a water treasure hunt and more! We will move to the multipurpose fields from 4:00pm – 9:30pm for great food, music, entertainment, youth activities, games, craft vendors, an adult zone and a spectacular fireworks display! When looking through the Sports and Activities Directory, remember: whether it’s swimming, fitness, youth sports, community special events or recreation classes for all ages, the Town of Davie Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department has something for everyone in your family to enjoy. For more information on any Davie program, please call (954) 327-3941. As always, see you in the parks, and don’t forget to “Like” us on Facebook.

Dear Cooper City Friends:

The spring and summer seasons are great times to reflect on recent successes, while also looking forward to new beginnings. Our season opened on February 27th, with the groundbreaking of the long-anticipated Flamingo West Park, followed by another tremendously successful and well-attended parade, concert and pageant series, at Cooper City’s 59th Birthday and Founder’s Day Celebration. This year’s Founder’s Day festivities were enjoyed by roughly 5,000 participants. During our Founder’s Day week of events, a new group of city ambassadors were crowned in our second annual pageant series. Congratulations to the following: Little Miss Cooper City: Lola McClure; Miss Cooper City Teen USA: Kimberly Slinkosky; Miss Cooper City USA: Sarah Molina; Mr. Senior Cooper City: Earl Higginbothum; and Ms. Senior Cooper City: Mary Lou Corbiere. These winners represent Cooper City at both public and community events, by participating in volunteer projects with local community organizations and schools. Thank you for honoring us by being shining examples of what makes this city Someplace Special. The Flamingo West Park groundbreaking ceremony marked the birth of a community enhancement that will benefit city residents for many years to come. The future park facility is located on 26 acres of city property, at the Southwest corner of the Flamingo/Stirling Road intersection. The multi-use park will feature walking trails, playgrounds, pavilions, athletic fields and other passive park amenities. Contractors and developers are currently responding to our invitation to bid for the development and construction of the following: four fields, a restroom/ concession building, a dock, pathway shelter(s) and supporting parking areas. Additional requests for proposals will follow to include the procurement and installation of athletic field turf, sports lighting and playground equipment. In other park-related news, the City Commission elected to name the passive park, located on the southeast corner of Palm Avenue and SW 55th Court, Jerry Morgan Park. Cooper City locals remember Jerry Morgan as a long-time city resident, coach, volunteer and friend to everyone he met; Morgan passed away on January 27th, 2012, after being struck by an automobile while walking along the road near the park. Without reservation, we have answered the call of the domesticated pet owner and have selected two park sites that will accommodate the needs of our residents and their dogs. Both Christie Schafale Park and Forest Lake Park have been designated as optimal park sites to receive enhancements that will allow them to serve as dog parks. The parks will include play areas for both large and small dogs. As for the Public Safety Committee, a ten-member Public Safety Advisory Board (PSAB), consisting of two resident appointments made by each member of the commission, will begin the onerous task of reviewing our current public safety contract. This committee will determine how to provide the highest level of protection and security, at the most sensible cost, to city residents and tax-payers. The PSAB will also help to determine whether it will be feasible for the city to reclaim Law Enforcement and Fire Rescue Services—placing the departments back under city auspices—or if remaining with the current service provider, BSO, is in our best interests. The committee will measure the scope of our current contract and all of its provisions against the practical needs of the city; they will report to the city manager in preparation for establishing a new public safety plan and/ or negotiating a future contract. Additionally, Cooper City District 16 has been outfitted with license plate readers. These high-speed scanners help to aid law enforcement by reading and storing the information on each automobile tag that passes by a designated point—whether attached to a stationary object or a deputy’s cruiser. When a car sought in connection with a crime or a missing person passes by one or more of these scanners, the database can easily provide law enforcement with the most recent locations of the automobile’s whereabouts. With fun and safety in mind, have a safe and happy summer, and be sure to exercise caution around all water sources. For information about swimming lessons, please contact our Pool & Tennis Center at (954) 436-7300, and look for our program schedules in the activities section of this publication. With our thoughts and actions, we make the world a better place.

Greg Ross Mayor

Celebrating 10 Years of Achievement

s Broadway Kids Studio celebrates it’s 10 year anniversary, we reflect on the positive impact a performing arts studio can have on a community and the future of the talented young students who currently attend and have attended it’s program. Broadway Kids Studio opened its doors in the summer of 2008, with the hopes of inspiring young performers to follow their dreams in music, dance, and drama. “BKS means the world to me. It’s like belonging to a family. It’s a place that prepared me to seek a career in the arts. The studio gave me the training and confidence to develop into the performer I am today,” said Emily Alderman, a Freshman majoring in Dance at Florida State University. What started as a 3-room studio encompassing 1700 square feet, grew to state-of-the-art 11-room studio spanning over 8,000 square feet.

The facility houses a recording studio, multiple large dance and private lesson studios, a black box theater, and a rock band rehearsal space. The use of a large air wall gives the studio flexibility to combine two large dance studios into an area capable of replicating a large performance stage. The ability to translate directly from class to the stage has helped both large scale musical productions and the BKS dance competition team. A multiple time world dance championship qualifying team, BKS took over 70 dancers to the world stage last year. Throughout the year, BKS students can be seen participating with their local schools in Thespians, Spring Musicals, FMEA All State, and Disney’s Candlelight Procession. The training they receive from BKS is imperative to the success they achieve at school, both in the arts and academically. “I have

always had the artistic seed inside of me. BKS watered me and gave me sunlight to grow into the artistic tree I have become,” said Sergio De La Espriella, a Senior at the University of Florida majoring in Musical Theater. Upon graduation, Sergio is heading to the Charleston Stage Company in South Carolina for a one month actor in residency program. Most recently, BKS performers have been seen dancing at halftime and performing with live Rock Band sets at Miami Heat games, Shops at Pembroke Gardens, the Davie Orange Blossom Festival, and other community events. Carolena Albert, an intern at Grammy University, and Senior studying Popular and Commercial Music at Loyola University said, “I love that I was constantly surrounded by music and had the space available to me to be able to create, collaborate, receive

constructive advice, and most of all express myself.” As a training facility to hundreds of performers every week, we are proud to see our students pursue their passion after they graduate high school. Diego De La Espriella, currently a Sophomore at Oklahoma University studying Acting and Dramaturgy said, “BKS reminds me of home. BKS fosters an environment that promotes positive connection and love.” Carter Nash, a University of Miami Musical Theater major, said “My favorite part of BKS had been the performances…to be able to walk on that stage confidently and put up a performance that we were proud of is a feeling I don’t think I will be able to justify with words.” Carter can be seen in the upcoming production of the Pirates of Penzance at The Jerry Herman Ring Theater. Victor Vazquez is currently a student at Marymount University (NYC) studying Theater Performance. Victor started his theater journey 9 years ago when BKS was in its infancy. Victor, who was seen in many BKS productions while in middle school and high school said, “BKS prepared me for studying musical theater in college because it gave me the skills and experience I needed, and the knowledge to apply them so I could continue down this path.”

Alumni are now studying music, theater, and dance all over the United States: Suzie Fyodorov is at Tish School of the Arts at NYU, Victor Vazquez, is at Marymount in NY, Emily Alderman is at Florida State University, Diego de la Espriella is at Oklahoma University, Gabriel Szajnert and Carter Nash, are at the University of Miami, Carolena Albert is at Loyola University, and Valentina Rodriguez is at University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Valentina, who is studying Music Business, Entrepreneurship and Technology said it best, “Once a Broadway Kid always a Broadway Kid. I owe them everything I have. It was and still is a second home to me.” With over 350 currently enrolled students, the future is shining bright for these performers. Broadway Kids Studio provides training in dancing, singing, acting and instruments. Coupled with performance opportunities, this training translates to an unmatched competitive advantage for BKS students. A couple of BKS seniors in the spotlight this year include Caroline Cuevas and Alyssa Hartley. Caroline is in the midst of college music auditions and has attended Broadway Kids Studio for 7 years. Her favorite part of BKS is, “The people, Michelle Ameerally and Raul Rivera especially, they have been my mentors and supporters.”

Alyssa Hartley is starting her BFA in Musical Theater at LIU-Post in the fall. “Theater is something that is supposed to bring people who love to perform together to produce beautiful pieces of art, and I truly believe the BKS embodies that. At BKS, we all come together for the same reason and form lifelong bonds, even if we are only in one show together,” said Alyssa. All programs at BKS sell out every year with lengthy waiting lists the norm for the After School Program. The program is rich in a variety of classes, disciplined instruction, and unmatched attention to details. Enrollment opens at the beginning of May for the 2018/2019 school year. Anyone interested should take advantage of the few spots that are available each year. Summer Camp this year is sure to be popular once again with the studio performing 101 Dalmatians Kids, Jungle Book Kids, Mary Poppins Jr., and School of Rock. In addition, weekly Summer Dance Camps are available. Enrollment is open now and spots are filling up quickly! A sell out for the 10th consecutive year is certain. LISA MALLOZZI

ver 10 years ago, the developer of Monterra gave the municipality of Cooper City several acres of land on the corner of Flamingo and Stirling Road. We have prepared the land, and have FINALLY broken ground! It has taken a long time, but when this project concludes, the residents of Cooper City will have an incredible park. The first stage will be the completion of the fields—any parent of a child that plays sports on our current fields can agree that it is much needed; children will no longer have to play on dirt anymore! We hope to have the fields completed by the start of the soccer season. The park will feature a lake teeming with fish, as well as a pavilion that can be rented for all of your party needs. We will also have a walking/exercise path for those seeking other outdoor exercise options. The majority of the park is being paid for with impact fees from developers; these fees can only be used on a new park, as they were put into place to help offset the wear that new residents will put on our current parks and sports fields. Within the next two months, you can expect to see the completion of two dog parks. They will be added to existing parks, where there

will be space for both small and large dogs at both locations. There will be water fountains available for people and pets, as well as benches for sitting, and many activities to keep your dog happy. The new park on Flamingo Road will feature a scoreboard, bleachers, benches, a walking path, pavilion, and a lake/water retention area. If anyone knows of a pet business that wants to get their name out there, this is the perfect opportunity to advertise, as we are currently seeking potential sponsors for both locations. Anyone interested may contact Cooper City Hall. While driving around, you may have noticed that a few neighborhood parks have been under construction. These parks were damaged beyond repair this past hurricane season and are now being rebuilt. It has taken quite some time to develop the replacement playgrounds; however, they are being installed at an accelerated rate. With summer just around the corner, you can be sure that the parks of Cooper City will soon be offering something for the whole family to enjoy. So, put on your walking/running/athletic shoes and have some fun this summer!

h i s y e a r, F l a m i n g o E l e m e n t a r y celebrated St. Patrick’s Day by kicking off our new environmental project, Green Flamingos—which is a school beautification program designed to teach our students about environmental issues, while allowing them to test out their green thumbs as well. Students in primary grades have been introduced to environmental consciousness by reading Dr. Seuss’ Lorax, while older students have researched facts concerning the environment. The start of this program will launch a school-wide focus on helping our students to become more environmentally sensitive, with specific attention given to issues related to our community. By relating these larger issues to our own school, students can begin to understand the role we each play in being environmentally responsible. Each grade level has “adopted” an area around the school campus. Students will be using research and math skills, as they work on their plans for their designated areas. Once their beautification designs are complete, we will be reaching out to our community and to businesses in Davie, to help us by donating flowers, plants and mulch for our garden areas. Each day, a new class from a different grade level will give their area a little bit of TLC. Students will ensure that there is no litter in their area—they will pull weeds, plant flowers, and work to ensure that their part of the world remains beautiful. If anyone is interested in assisting with this program, please contact our school at (754)-323-5700, or send inquiries to Flamingo Elementary, 1130 SW 133rd Avenue, Davie, FL 33325, to the attention of the Principal.

his past year, the Pioneer’s girls flag football team dominated the game with an undefeated season. On March 15th, they faced Lauderdale Lakes at McArthur High School for their first playoff game, and while they played their best, they did not make it to the next game. They were heartbroken about the loss, but they were still very proud about being undefeated and making it this far. “I felt great about this season. We trained hard and left everything on the field. I couldn’t ask for a better team to play with,” said Team Captain, Tamar Shani. Football coaches Duhart and Hawkins—who both set off their 16th year of coaching girls flag football, with a combined 36 years of coaching experience—were not very optimistic about the upcoming season, prior to tryouts. “Last year we had a lot of strong eighth graders, so I wasn’t sure how it would be this year,” said Coach Duhart. However, this year’s team lived up to last year’s team’s reputation, and were still able to pull through with an undefeated season and a ticket into the semifinals. With the weight of the world on their shoulders, the girls flag football team marched on McArthur’s field for their first playoff game and gave it their all. As the clock ticked

and the game went on, the girls persevered, but even with their gallant effort, they were not able to pull through, and the post season came to a premature end for the Eagles. Still, the team and their coaches walked away with their heads held high. “We had great production this year from team leaders like Maya Williams, Tamar Shani and Ella Sanchez,” said Coach Duhart. The team held weekly practices to prepare for their games. Nevertheless, the focus shouldn’t remain on the girls alone, as coaches Duhart and Hawkins continue to inspire the team—even as some of the eighth graders move on to high school. “My advice to outgoing eighth graders is to continue cultivating their athletic lifestyles. It’s a great way to stay healthy, make friends and form memories that last a lifetime,” said Coach Duhart. As for sixth and seventh graders, the coach advises to keep training and working on their speed. “Come with the speed and a willingness to learn and we will teach you the rest!” he added. Pioneer’s sports program had a successful year overall, with cross country, golf, and boys soccer winning the county championships. The school’s successes go to show the dedication of our sports department’s players and coaches.

ova Blanche Forman, and all of the Nova Schools, are #MSDStrong! In the wake of the tragic event on February 14th, Nova Blanche banded together to show solidarity with Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and the Parkland community. Many of our teachers/staff have purchased shirts, made donations, and attended vigils. Our entire community sent banners to the high school, which are displayed on their fence line. At Nova Blanche Forman, our students wrote messages of peace, forming a chain, which is now being displayed on the fence entering onto our campus. Finally, our hallways are lined with colorful paper candles with messages of peace from each of our students. We will continue to honor the victims by promoting peace, kindness, and love each day! We are very excited and grateful to welcome Officer Greg Moise, from the Davie Police Department, to Nova Blanche Forman, as our new full-time School Resource Officer. Officer Moise is already making an enormous impact on our school by getting to know our campus, families and our amazing students. We believe that he will help to solidify our safety plans, and that he will continue to be a positive role model for our students. At Nova Blanche Forman, our students are learning and growing every single day. We work toward tapping into each students’ talents and are very proud of all our students, including the many who have been

recognized by receiving awards. Contests and acknowledgement for our students have come from art projects, posters, essays, musical performances, and technological skills—just to name a few. Additionally, all of our students have been able to experience Virtual Reality Field Trips. This technology has brought learning to life for our students—and even our adults. Our classrooms have been incorporating many new pieces of educational technology that amplify student voice and promote classrooms that are highly engaging and interactive for our students. Lastly, as the end of the school year draws near, we are excited to be promoting 132 students into the 6th grade. Almost all of these students will remain in our Nova Family and will attend Nova Middle School. We will miss our 5th grade students, but look forward to being some of their biggest cheerleaders as they continue their education at Nova. We couldn’t be prouder of their accomplishments, and know that they are on the path to success!!! #NovaPride #NovaFamily #KnowNova

he NSU University School’s (USchool) basketball team is no ordinary team. Before this season, the team’s best finish was last year, when they participated in the regional semifinals. The Shark’s incredible season led to the first FHSAA State Championship for basketball in the history of the school; the Sharks went almost undefeated, with a 36-2 record. Swinton Acosta describes the success of the team in his senior year by stating that, “We have started a legacy here and changed the culture for USchool basketball for years to come.” Swinton also notes that, “Getting invited to Nationals was just the cherry on top for me, especially as a senior. It truly is a blessing to end my senior year here at USchool with the success we have had as a team.” On March 29th, the team had the opportunity to attend the Geico Nationals, in New York City, where they faced the top seven teams in the nation and battled it out for the title of national champions. The Sharks first defeated Shadow Mountain (6th in rank), 75-63 in the quarterfinals. They went on to beat Oak Hill Academy (2nd in rank) in the semifinals—whom they lost to earlier in the season, by a score of 80-65. A state matchup in the championship game manifested as the Sharks took on the #1 ranked school—Montverde Academy from Orlando, Florida; Montverde beat USchool 76-58. Although the game didn’t have the outcome that

the Sharks wanted, this was still a monumental season for the school, and has set them up for future success. Starting point guard for the team, Junior Logan Alters, who has offers from the Ivy Leagues, said, “Winning the 5A state title, and the two biggest high school tournaments (City of Palms and John Wall Invitational) are great accomplishments. It was such a great experience traveling across the eastern part of the United States.” Logan described how he will miss seniors like Drue Drinnon (University of New Mexico signee) and Trey Doomes (West Virginia University signee) by saying, “I will really miss the leadership from the seniors. They helped the team stay on task and focus on the major goals for the season.” The sharks also have a dynamic duo in Junior Vernon Carey and Sophomore Scottie Barnes. With 21 college offers, Vernon is ranked #2 nationally for the class of 2019. His top eight schools to attend include: Duke, Florida State University, the University of Kansas, the University of Kentucky, the University of Miami, Michigan State, the University of North Carolina and UCLA. Scottie Barnes is nationally ranked #7 in his class. He has received offers from Florida, Kansas, Miami, Oregon and Syracuse. Together, the two players are a force to be reckoned with on the court. The future is bright for the NSU University School Sharks—whose youthful talent is commendable.

America’s Got Talent, Teachers Got More! By Tiffany Aaron and Jennifer Arbelaez

O

n Wednesday, March 21st, Embassy Creek Elementary School hosted their 10th annual Teacher Talent Show. Teachers and staff spent weeks preparing a song or dance to perform on stage in the school’s cafeteria. Many hours were devoted to perfecting choreographed routines and to creating props and backdrops to be used throughout the show. Students and parents were in awe over the costume ideas that were incorporated into the dance routines. This event was one of the most highly anticipated events at Embassy Creek. Each year, the money raised provides funds for the school’s PTA. This year, however, all of the proceeds raised were given directly to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and to the scholarship funds that were created in memory of those lost. Money was raised through ticket sales, which generally sell out within the first few days. Once again, the amazing Embassy Creek PTA stepped up to have food and light snacks available for purchase to those who enjoyed the show. Jersey John’s, of Cooper City, provided food for the performers prior to the show, and

made a $250 donation to the MSD Fund. This year, in addition to ticket sales, Kindergarten-Fifth grade, Specials teachers, Office Staff/Administration, ESE/ Support Staff and the PTA Executive Board, created themed baskets to raffle off on the night of the talent show. The evening began with a presentation dedicated to our School Resource Officer, Deputy Marc Kiar. Safety Patrols presented Deputy Kiar with letters, books, gift cards and poems, that had been collected throughout the week during ECE’s Care for Kiar week. To conclude the night, the teachers joined together for one final performance— teachers and staff from various grades and positions within the school recreated the audition scene from the movie Sing. As anticipated, the evening was a huge success—raising over $4000. As popular as this event is each and every year, this night was particularly special, as the Embassy Creek Elementary community joined together to show their love and support for Marjory Stoneman Douglas—the Flamingos fly with the Eagles.

SCHOOLS

G

riffin Elementary School’s students totally get into their learning! This became apparent when our intermediate students began learning about famous Americans. Students from the Gifted/High Achiever classes of Mrs. Millovan, Mr. Davis, and Mrs. Shapiro were proud to present their projects for the first annual Living History Museum at Griffin Elementary School. The third grade students researched presidents of the United States; the fourth grade students researched historical figures from Florida history; and the fifth grade students researched other historical figures from significant times in American history. Whilst students researched historical figures, they began to transform—right into character! As part of the presentation focused on their educational discoveries, the students dressed in costume to represent their designated person; they also created a display about their person, and were prepared to speak as their person. Additionally, each student created a button that would allow the museum visitors to “activate” the exhibit. On the night of the presentation, all of the students brought their characters to life by becoming a statue in our Living Museum! As the visitors pressed their buttons, the students came to life while presenting their speeches in the style of their famous historical figures. It was amazing to learn so many interesting facts about these individuals in the short, two-minute presentation! The students went beyond the expected surface information and learned the mannerisms of the historical figures that they each

A

represented. For instance, Jackie Kennedy Onassis was captivating in her sunglasses—dressed ever so fashionably—while speaking about her strength for the American people during President Kennedy’s time in office. To activate Ruth Bader Ginsberg, you needed to bang her gavel. The information that Steve Jobs relayed scratched beyond the surface. President Trump was true to character right down to his hand movements. The students were so creative! Not only did you—the museum visitor—learn about their accomplishments, but you also learned tidbits of information that are not necessarily in the mainstream of information. Having to present their work in front of parents, teachers, and fellow students truly allowed the students to celebrate their characters’ achievements, while also sharing their experiences. The Living History Museum was an amazing opportunity for the students to shine while making history come to life. Their project was educational, and they got to have a lot of fun while working hard. The Living Museum was a tribute not only to the people portrayed, but to the students and teachers who orchestrated this extraordinary event. Marjorie Stoneman Douglas was the first exhibit that patrons (students and parents) got to observe as they entered the museum; a tribute to the students of MSD. Due to the success of the first annual Living History Museum, the teachers at Griffin Elementary plan to continue this tradition for years to come.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP DEFINES FOX TRAIL ELEMENTARY By Student Leaders: Koral Adams, Andrew Gittleman, Samantha Malary, and Stella Seamon

t Fox Trail Elementary, every student has a unique way of being a leader. Starting from Kindergarten, students work together to make this institution an amazing place to learn. Fox Trail knows that there is a natural-born leader within every student, and strives to provide an environment in which everyone can become self-reliant by taking on more responsibility at school. Student leadership has been evident from the start of the school year—as students led open house presentations in several classes, where parents were able to learn about expectations directly from the students. Fox Trail student leaders can often be found guiding school tours—where leaders provide valuable information to prospective students and parents, and sometimes other schools’ Principals as well. Realizing that not every student begins school on the first day, student leaders have created a “Get the Scoop on Fox Trail” orientation—where student leaders hold periodic meetings for the new students, so that they may ask questions and meet other new “Fox Trailers”. As Fox Trail students eagerly anticipate the annual Smoothie King fundraiser, fifth grade student leaders advertise the event prior to the sale. At the event, they distribute smoothies to excited customers, and the money raised goes towards Spirit Week—a special event that honors Fox Trail’s fifth grade students. Student leaders often present at Fox Trail’s Student Advisory Committee meeting, keeping parents and school staff informed about school activities; they recently held a

presentation featuring Code.org, demonstrating the importance of technology for students. In similar fashion, students showed strong leadership skills during Take Your Child to Work Day, at Fox Trails. On that day, instead of going to work with family members, some student leaders were given the opportunity to become Principal/Assistant Principal for the day—they attended meetings, and even set up a fire drill! The group also enjoyed assisting adults with their fence display, in which colored cups were assembled on the fence to create the school’s motto, “Learn today, Lead tomorrow.” Fox Trail is excited to host its Rounding Up Future Leaders Day, this May. The Lighthouse teams—which are groups of adults and student leaders—will present a kindergarten round up, and will also highlight the many fabulous things that happen at Fox Trail each day. Students will lead an overview of the school, small group tours, and presentations as well. At the end of each year, the Fox Trail staff members sponsor a breakfast to show their appreciation for the many volunteers and community partners who have supported the school. Student Lighthouse members help to organize and serve the breakfast, and also assist in entertaining the honored guests. Assemblies at Fox Trail are no ordinary gathering; last November, students led a Hero assembly to honor the military. This June, students will lead the end of the year ceremonies. The school’s principal, Ms. Burgess, plans to have the entire ceremony led by students; they will write speeches and present the awards to their peers. As you can tell, Fox Trail truly lives up to its motto, “Learn Today...Lead Tomorrow”.

hen Jimmy Locust first began his dance career, he was often overlooked for opportunities due to his 4’9” stature. But before long, top industry pros, such as Paula Abdul, Janet Jackson and Michael Jackson, noticed the force of energy and talent that Jimmy Locust brought to the scene and in turn selected him for their projects. Mr. Locust appeared in iconic music videos such as Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation and films like Coming to America and performed at the Academy Awards, Grammy Awards and MTV Video Music Awards. The multi-faceted Mr. Locust became a sought-after performer, choreographer, actor and teacher whose work, both commercially and artistically, spanned the globe. With so many career successes came the humbling realization of how wide of an impact the arts can have on culture, education and industry, and the weight of responsibility that comes with it. Mr. Locust shifted his vision to the audience outside of the spotlight and sought to share his dance experience in a way that would make a positive impact on communities, and most specifically, youth.

As a master teacher, Jimmy Locust developed an anti-bullying program, Harmony Nation, which enlisted teens to educate children through dance, skits and testimonies. He then went on to establish a number of cutting-edge performance companies and three performing arts studios, including the recent opening of a new dance conservatory in Miramar, Locust Dance Academy (LDA). Working in conjunction with his long-time colleague and LDA co-director Monica Richardson Delgado, along with hand-picked dance professionals, Mr. Locust’s methodology is to draw on years of professional experience to deliver excellence in dance education that socially and emotionally uplifts and empowers students to reach their potential and inspire their South Florida communities. Locust Dance Academy is located at 2195 Palm Avenue in Miramar and offers dance classes, camps and private lessons for ages 3 to adult in Hip Hop, Jazz, Ballet, Contemporary and more. For more information about the Harmony Nation™ program or Locust Dance Academy, email LocustDanceAcademy@gmail.com, visit LocustDanceAcademy.com or call (954) 812-4931.
