Dear Readers, WELCOME BACK to your Sports & Activities Directory! We’ve missed you and the community involvement during the pandemic. Now that sports, activities, events and schools are happening again...the Sports & Activities Directory team is off the bench and back in the game! I’m sure you are wondering what is open, what’s happening and what new and exciting things are being offered for your family. We’re on it! This issue focuses on Back to School and Fall/Winter programs and special events, as well as just about everything you need yo know to get out and about again. With all the changes that have happened throughout the world and right here in your town, many changes happened with our publication and team as well. Unfortunately, many programs, businesses and activities are no longer around. It has been an arduous 18+ month journey for everyone! The Sports & Activities Directory team has also made many adjustments to accommodate the needs of publishing and the Publishers of our five different area directories. With that said, please welcome our newest Publisher/Licensor of the Weston Sports & Activities Directory, Isabel Magette. Isabel has been a stellar territory representative in Weston for several years and recently made a big leap to purchase the Weston area license during this pandemic. This is her first issue as Publisher and she has proven that this is her calling. The Davie/Cooper City/SW Ranches Sports & Activities Directory Publisher, Nikki Reading, has stepped down to pursue a new career. She did an awesome job for so many years and will be missed greatly by all of those with whom she worked. I am very excited to resume the Publisher role for this area and have been busy meeting with Parks & Recreation staff, businesses and Mayors, as well as taking photos of all of you out at the parks and events. Kim Kadel remains as Publisher/Licensor of the Coral Springs/Parkland Directory, as does Anina Venuti for Plantation. Linda Lombardi is the Managing Director for the Pembroke Pines Directory, handling all photos, sales and communication with businesses, schools and organizations. Carolyn Lass is our Territory Representative floating between our five areas. Last, but not least, Jennifer Gowen remains our unbelievably talented artistic director and graphic designer as she has for the past 18 years. We are a strong and devoted team and we are all in this together to bring you the most valued, fun and informative publications for your families. We thank you for waiting patiently for us to get this issue in your hands again. We thank and are so grateful to our cherished advertisers for their continued business and loyalty. We thank our cities and schools for their ongoing support. We can’t do what we do without all of you! Enjoy this issue in hard copy or online at www.sportsandactivities.com. All of our five area Directories are available on our website for viewing and/or downloading and have interactive links to visit our advertisers’ websites. My best to you,

Margot

Hello Davie Residents,

Hello Davie Residents. The past 17 (plus) months have been difficult for everyone as we have collectively navigated the COVID-19 Pandemic. Unfortunately, there are many people who are no longer with us this year due to this terrible virus. I hope all of you who are reading this have remained healthy during these uncertain times. As children have returned to school, please remember to stay vigilant, wash your hands regularly and wear your mask when appropriate. It’s hard to believe that another summer has come and gone, and we have begun a new school year here in Davie. As we return to regular programming, it’s never too late to begin (or continue) teaching your children valuable water safety skills through swim lessons. The Town of Davie recently won an award through the Florida Recreation and Parks Association for our #Saferby4 Campaign, spearheaded by Davie Fire and the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Departments. We offer first class swim lessons at the Pine Island Pool for children ages 6 months and older. Our Aquatics Team are certified Water Safety Instructors and take pride in making learning to swim fun! Our Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department also offers many great programs, events and sports leagues throughout the year. Currently we are accepting registrations for our Winter Soccer Leagues for children ages 3 – 15 years old. All games and practices will take place at Bamford Sports Complex in Pine Island Park. Participation in youth sports provide many benefits to our youth. They teach children teamwork and discipline, provide social opportunities, and build self-esteem. We are also offering two new cultural programs at our facilities. The first is a Youth Improv class where students will learn the fundamentals of improvisation. Creativity will take center stage with this new program offering. The second is a Photography class. Students will learn the art of photography through this new instructional course. I also invite everyone to join us in Cowboy Town, on September 11th for the Weekley Brothers Pro Rodeo. The gates will open at 6:00pm and the performance will begin at 7:30pm. For more information or to purchase tickets vist: www.davieprorodeo.com. This event is “rain or shine” in our covered arena! Also, don’t worry about the heat, the arena has giant fans to keep you cool! One of my favorite events each year is the Halloween Happenings event hosted within the Davie Arena at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. The “spooktacular” fun will take place on Saturday, October 30th. The event will include a costume contest, games, youth entertainment, vendors, a pumpkin patch, and other fun and spooky activities. As always, we will be hosting the Davie Horse Costume Contest during the event. I hope to see all my fellow equestrians dressed up in their best costume along with their horse. When looking through our activity listings, remember, whether it’s swimming, fitness, youth sports, community special events or recreation classes for all ages, the Town of Davie Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department has something for everyone in your family. For more information on any Davie program, just call (954) 327-3941. Please also check our website: www.davie-fl.gov regularly for updates related to COVID-19 and any changes to our programs and events. As always, see you in the parks, and don’t forget to “Like” us on Facebook.

Sincerely,

Judy Paul Mayor of Davie

Dear Residents of Cooper City,

10

It is with incredible excitement that I write to you and welcome back the “Sports and Activities Directory,” after a hiatus of more than 18 months. Thank you to Margot Lyons Puleri, the publisher of this wonderful resource, for relaunching the directory. And, I would like to recognize Nikki Reading, who published this directory for the past several years. We wish her well in her new endeavors and thank her for the outstanding work she did in spotlighting our City’s events, activities, parks and facilities which are all cornerstones of what make Cooper City “Someplace Special.” In July, your City Commission proclaimed July 2021 as Parks and Recreation Month in Cooper City. So it is my absolute joy to welcome you and your relatives, friends, and neighbors, from across South Florida, back to our parks and facilities this month and throughout the rest of the year! Our City remains dedicated to providing a variety of leisure activities, recreational opportunities, and enrichment programs to enhance your quality of life. As social distancing guidelines have been scaled back, Cooper City’s Recreation Department has worked tirelessly to reignite and reinvigorate its programs and services. Summer Camp at our Community Center has been a major success, allowing children to return to a setting that allows them to play and interact on a daily basis, and let their imaginations run wild. Not to mention, parents have been able to rely on our dedicated staff and volunteers to provide an exciting, educational, and caring atmosphere during the summer break from school. Also returning this summer have been Cooper City’s Active Adult programs. So far, participants have taken part in trips to Lion Country Safari and the Gold Coast Railroad Museum. Furthermore, please save the dates for a number of upcoming events. We will be holding a “Bike Rodeo” on September 4, where adults and children can ride through a “rodeo course,” get helmet fittings, and receive some great giveaways! We are also looking forward to recognizing “Autism Awareness Day” on September 12. Due to COVID-19, we were unable to recognize this special day in April, so this upcoming event will give members of our community an opportunity to take part in public safety demos and gain a better understanding of autism. And coming in October, we will be holding a “Garage Sale” at Flamingo West Park. You can register for an assigned spot, starting on September 8 at the Community Center. If you would like to learn more about any of the events and programs organized by the City’s Recreation Department, please visit our City website at www.CooperCityFL.org/events. As our community makes every effort to push past the pandemic, I want to encourage those who have not been vaccinated to roll up your sleeves and receive your shot. Vaccines are free and do not require appointments at many locations across Broward County. You can find information on the COVID-19 vaccine and vaccination sites by visiting www.CooperCityFL. org/COVID19. Finally, I invite you to take part in your government process. Key issues that matter to residents are discussed at City Commission meetings, which are held on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month. Residents’ input is valuable and critical to making sure Cooper City remains “Someplace Special.” As always, please feel free to contact my office with any questions or concerns you may have. You can reach my office by dialing (954) 4344300 and pressing option #6.

Sincerely,

Greg Ross Mayor of Cooper City

AROUND TOWN Davie / Cooper City / SW Ranc hes Sports & Activities Directory | Issue 31 | Mid August - October 2021

Hello Southwest Ranches Residents,

As we approach the upcoming Fall season and are heading back to school, it is exciting to see all of the Southwest Ranches Town events starting up again and having in person events as well. We encourage you to check out the Town calendar on our website at www.southwestranches.org to see the activities and events that are now available. We have our normal Town and Volunteer Board meetings, but as we move into the Fall, we have a number of other fun events that will lead us all the way to the holiday events at the end of the year. This is exciting to see, and we encourage you to visit our website often for updates and details. We are once again looking forward to our annual craft show where we invite all those with talent to come and share their wares with the community. I am always amazed at the creativity and new ideas that I see. We also have an annual car show where you can see some of the newest cars, as well as the classics. In addition, many of our HOAs and Civic Associations have events through the year where all are invited to attend. Recently we had a great meeting in Town to celebrate the awarding of scholarships to a number of our students. They all work so very hard all year long, putting in service hours and raising funds on their own. And, especially in a year like 2020 when much of the fundraising went on, it was truly a challenge for them to raise the funds that they did. The amazing part is that they not only made the year a success, but they actually raised more money toward the scholarship fund than has ever been raised in the past! We are blessed to have such dedicated students, parents, Education Advisory Board Members, and of course the community of residents that support these students. To see this come together in such a challenging year was an inspiration to us all. All of these events remind me of why my wife and I selected this area to call home over 26 years ago. Sunshine Ranches is unique and special with open spaces to run, play and enjoy the great outdoors, while also being a wonderful learning environment for our children as they interact with animals, nature and take on new responsibilities. Truly, the Ranches is an exceptional community and one that we are proud to call home. So, we invite you to join us for our events in the Ranches and get to know our community better. We love our rural roots, our open spaces, and all the animal sights and sounds. We trust that whether you live here in the Ranches or visit, that you also will enjoy the unique community of Southwest Ranches.

Sincerely,

Steve Breitkreuz Mayor - Southwest Ranches

Please keep an eye out for our upcoming school newsletter and to our school website where we will highlight our Partners in Education throughout the year. appy Fall from Nova Eisenhower Elementary! We are so happy to have all our students back in the building this school year after a challenging and difficult past year. The teachers have been working hard to get our student council and various clubs up and running and we are excited to bring some new and exciting opportunities for our students. This year, Nova Eisenhower will begin the Debate Club in 5th Grade, led by Mrs. Paz! These students will have the opportunity to engage in activities and experiences that will improve their critical thinking skills and abilities to participate in discourse backed by research that will lead to improved writing, creativity, and self-confidence. Stay tuned for information on Debate Competitions and Championships throughout the school year! Nova Eisenhower is also looking forward to getting our Student Council program in motion to help students reconnect and build relationships with each other. This wonderful program is run by Ms. Mejia, and she has some new and very creative ideas on how to help our students build leadership and responsibility skills. We look forward to seeing where these programs will take us this year! We value and deeply appreciate our business partners

P

reparations are underway for the 2021-2022 years, and the stakeholders at Cooper City High School are working diligently to ensure another year of success and reflecting on moments -big and small- that brought the staff, students, and community together last school year. Cowboy Pride remained in full swing, with students and staff finding the positive in every challenge while upholding a wellestablished Tradition of Excellence. Our world has changed a great deal over the last year. When our school community was faced with an unmapped future, we adapted our course, and continued to adapt, again and again. We held onto the kindness and support of one another and kept moving forward. We held each other close, even when it wasn’t possible to do so in person. Flexibility, determination, innovation, and perseverance have guided our school community. The Class of 2021 seniors found innovative ways to keep with tradition while modifying plans to meet CDC guidelines. Memorable events included spirit dress up weeks, re-imagining the senior breakfast into a Cowboy style outdoor barbecue, hosting a memorable prom under the stars in the school courtyard and planning a post-graduation celebratory parade, just to highlight a few. The class of 2021 was innovative and resilient and served as an inspiring example of Cowboy Pride, leading the way in activities and academic success. Students were also honored and praised for their hard work at the annual Top 10% Outstanding Student Scholars Academic Excellence event and Senior Awards night. Speaking of academics, dynamic curriculum and extracurricular enrichment remained a strong CCHS focus-as always- from August to June, even with the new element of distance learning. Equipped with Canvas and Teams, CCHS teachers used engaging and innovative online instructional tools, embracing the 21st century learning, so that our students can continue to learn. Although logistics were challenging at times, our school community stayed committed to the academics, yielding successes to celebrate: 99% of students in the class of 2021 met all of their graduation requirements, earning over 9 million in cumulative Bright Futures and other scholarships from schools across the United States to jumpstart their futures. Over 95% of students in this graduating class will be continuing their education after high school, attending a 4-year, 2-year or technical colleges. 100% of our AP Capstone Diploma seekers met their goal, achieving the great honor of successfully studying, writing, presenting, and defending an original research project. We proudly offer 21 Advanced Placement courses at CCHS. Not to be outdone, our AICE Cambridge program offering 16 AICE Cambridge classes with an opportunity to earn the prestigious AICE Cambridge Diploma, embarked on its second year at CCHS and new course offerings such as AICE Cambridge Drama, AICE Cambridge Literature and AICE Cambridge Business joined the lineup, providing students with even more opportunities to dig deep and explore their passions while working toward the prestigious AICE Diploma. Students certainly proved why Cooper City High School continues to hold a position as a School of Excellence as well as a Gold Seal school for community service- nothing can stop a Cowboy from achieving their goals. As an example of dedication, students showed up for testing season-quite literallykicking off the school’s first in-person AICE Cambridge exam administration as well as demonstrating their knowledge for the FSA, EOCs, and AP exams. And as they always have, programs such as DECA, Drama, Sound of Pride, JROTC and Debate earned recognition from district and state organizations, and the CCHS athletic teams celebrated many exciting wins, including district and state championship titles. It truly takes a community to support

a child, and there is no other place quite like Cooper City. We commend our community for their commitment and support, especially the friends and family members of our scholars. They have faithfully supported their student endeavors while juggling their own new challenges this past year. Cooper City High School has an extra special reason to celebrate: a 50th anniversary! Established in 1971, it has been 50 years since the very first Cooper City High School Cowboys arrived on campus. In May of 2021 a time capsule ceremony was held. This event was sponsored by the Cooper City Community: Cooper City Education Advisory Board, Cooper City Optimist, and local realtor, Roni Sterin. School staff, community members and students came together to fill and dedicate a time capsule to be opened by the class of 2071. Seniors chose items to place in the capsule, including letters written by current students to those 50 years into the future. We look forward to a spectacular 50th year celebration in October of 2021 and invite all CCHS alumni to join us as we honor our school and its longstanding Tradition of Excellence and Cobwoy Pride. The 2021-2022 school year launches in early August with a Student Government sponsored Cowboy Corral with a twist: along with a traditional “Freshman Invasion” day for our 9th graders, there will be a special orientation day to provide our 10th graders and “new to the Coop” students with the opportunity to explore campus, meet their Cowboys peers and staff, and engage in fun team building events. Whatever this year brings, the Cowboys are ready and looking forward to all this year’s moments that are sure to be filled with Cowboy Pride, kindness and that special brand of community that Cooper City is known for upholding. We eagerly turn the page on the next chapter, ready to write another volume of Cowboy success. Cooper City High School is located at 9401 Stirling Road in Cooper City. Their Principal is Vera Perkovic. They can be reached at (754) 323-0200.

t Fox Trail Elementary, we want every student to become the leader they are born to be. Fox Trail is one of two schools in Broward County that have the “Leader in Me” Program. This program was created to help every student in grades kindergarten through fifth grade become self-reliant, take responsibility, and become positive influencers. Fox Trail Student Leaders are busy throughout the year, making a difference in our school. They can be heard on the WFTN morning news communicating important information to our school family and they are the voice of our Friday phone links, imparting important information to our families at home. They serve as peer buddies and welcome new students to our campus and help them feel comfortable by answering their questions and helping foster new friendships at the monthly “Get the Scoop at Fox Trail” meetings. Our leaders present at our School Parent meetings and School Advisory Council meetings in order to ensure our families are aware of school procedures, expectations, and all the wonderful school activities such as the Robotics club, STEM special, Debate team, Debate special as well as the exciting things happening in our classrooms. They conduct the quarterly school tours for incoming students and their families and present at all of our assemblies.

We offer clubs (ECO, Robotics, Art, Chorus…) with a new addition of Debate and Drama this year. In addition, we welcome our new ASD cluster programs for one Kindergarten and one First Grade class as well. We can’t wait to meet our new little cub passengers! Art is our newest special added to our curriculum map in order to give us a true bearing towards

As leaders, our students become role models. At Fox Trail, we give students the opportunity to shine throughout the year and we do this by allowing them to lead programs such as Science Fair, Safety Leaders, Art, and Music assemblies, become Reading Buddies to younger students, serve as team captains in their classrooms and at times even teach a lesson or two. With all the challenges that we face in today’s world, the leadership program at Fox Trail has proven to be an exemplar in creating and maintaining student leaders that will shine no matter what is put in front of them. Educating today’s students to succeed in tomorrow’s world is our mission. The lessons they learn at Fox Trail will prepare them for their future. We live our theme every day “Learn Today, Lead Tomorrow!” Fox Trail Elementary is located at 1250 Nob Hill Road in Davie. Their Principal is Lynn Burgess. They can be reached at (754) 323-5800.

lamingo Elementary’s students are more prepared than ever to start the 20212022 school year. Some families took advantage of the district offered Summer Experience Program while other enriched their children’s lives at Flamingo Summer Academy. The program on Flamingo Elementary’s campus fought all the effects of “Summer Slide” by keeping students academically engaged during the eight week Learning through Play Summer Camp. Research shows that students who do not continue practicing academic skills for 9 weeks of summer typically experience a learning loss of approximately 20% of the previous school years learning gains. Our third through fifth grade students competed through Nationwide Dimension U Weekly Math Challenges online and placed as Top 3 Winners several times. We balanced the academic activities into a busy schedule of learning through play experiences. The students loved hands-on, project-based learning with their reading in 3rd-5th grades focusing on the Social Studies and Science concepts they were exploring weekly. Our primary students enjoyed our “Reading Buddies” program with one-onone assistance from high school volunteers who were seeking community service hours. They read books together and responded to writing prompts based on the text. These high school volunteers also helped by practicing sight word flashcards too. Summer Academy encouraged reading self-selected texts for enjoyment

and many more are going to engage our children once again. We look forward to having our parent volunteers back in the classrooms. We are excited to bring Tanakee-Kee back to its original magnitude. We can’t wait to launch our Watch DOGS program for the adult men in our community to showcase that the “Dads Of Great Students” are needed in the school, too. Academically, we are adding new staff members and intervention experts to help children that may have suffered academic losses. We are targeting reading skills through guided reading and we are looking forward to competing with other schools in Reflex Math fluency. It is going to be an exciting year at “The Ridge”, and we can’t wait to share it with our Davie community. Silver Ridge Elementary is located at 9100 SW 36th Street in Davie. Their phone number is 754-323-7500. Their Principal is Mr. John Vetter. Visit us on line at: www.browardschools.com/silverridge. through our DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) program for all children finishing first through fifth grade. One of the most beneficial programs we have is our “Kindergarten Readiness” program where students become comfortable with our campus and staff to make sure they are ready to begin learning the first day of school. The transition from a daycare center to public school elementary campus comes with learning new procedures and we are thankful these students in our kindergarten readiness program got a jump start before the school year even began. This program also helps students master basic skills such as letter name and sound recognition which help build the foundational reading skills that set them up for success in kindergarten. We know that much of 2021 was spent with excessive screen time for children so this summer was about playing outside, hands-on learning, building personal friendships, and creating art. Our students made some amazing post-pandemic memories and adjusted very well to what is becoming the “new normal” for spending time with their peers. We look forward to extending these fun opportunities to our after-school care program for students on Flamingo Elementary’s campus in the Fall. Flamingo Elementary is located at 1130 SW 133rd Avenue in Davie. Their Principal is Philip Bullock. They can be reached at (754) 323-5700.

ilver Ridge Elementary is proud to serve approximately 1,000 Davie families this school year. We are an amazing public school with an outstanding staff of 97 caring adults. Our reputation for being “The Best in the West” is well earned and deserved as our students perform both in and out of the classroom. Last school year, in a worldwide pandemic, our children continued academic successes and our families enjoyed camaraderie through our amazing Social Emotional lessons, our clubs and PTO. Our staff learned ways to reach children virtually to keep the joy of learning at the forefront of our vision. Our Volunteers registered hundreds of hours working virtually for our school and even on campus while taking care of the gardens and outside areas. Our PTO organized family nights from touchless participation to outdoor venues that parents and children could enjoy. We are truly thankful for the wonderful parents that support our school. This year we plan to bring back as many of our clubs as possible. Our live morning show will continue. Our Harry Potter club, environmental club, music clubs,

he Cambridge International Program is a department of the University of Cambridge in Cambridge, England with a 150-year history of providing international exams. There are nearly a million students in over 10,000 Cambridge schools in 160 countries. Students at Nova High School can take Cambridge Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) courses beginning in ninth grade and earn an international diploma within a threeyear period. Students explore areas of strength and interest while taking college-level courses. Nova High offers over twenty AICE courses that include math, science (such as Environmental Management and Marine Science), technology (such as Digital Media), languages (such as English and Spanish Language), arts and humanities (such as Business, European and American History, and Travel and Tourism), and research on global issues. AICE Law is also offered as part of Nova’s Law and Public Policy innovative program. The program has a rigorous curriculum that is heavily writing-based with a strong emphasis on critical thinking, analysis, and interpretation. Cambridge’s approach encourages students to become confident in working with information and ideas – their own and those of others, responsible for themselves, responsive and respectful of others, reflective to develop their ability to learn, innovative and equipped for new and future challenges, engaged intellectually, socially, and ready to make a difference. Students can take a variety of AICE courses at Nova High that include many benefits. They earn college credit for each exam passed, which are accepted by all Florida public universities and colleges, universities across the United States, and internationally. These courses can also boost their local grade point average with two extra quality points. Students may earn a Cambridge International Diploma (by passing seven exams in different areas of study) in addition to their high school diploma. If a student earns a Cambridge diploma and completes 100 community service hours, they qualify for the highest level of the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship, the Florida Academic Scholarship. This scholarship awards 100 percent tuition to any Florida public university

riffin is always striving to be a more sustainable campus. Our school garden is one way to achieve our sustainability goals. A few years back our school received a grant to build garden beds in our environmental area. Our PE teacher, Betsy Norrell, works with all students (K-5) during her Science Fridays on growing vegetables in our garden. She attended a two-day course where she learned how to integrate garden concepts into the curriculum and how to prepare our garden bounty to introduce students to fresh vegetables, which they grew themselves. Students planted seeds, replaced soil, weeded gardens, harvested vegetables, and then were able to taste the vegetables they harvested. Working in the Griffin Garden gives our students the opportunity to learn and work out in nature, in our outdoor learning area. Students learn about soil health and water and light requirements. After their seeds sprout, they plant their seedling in our garden. Each student is encouraged to use the knowledge they gained during Science Friday instruction to help foster their seedling. Some were successful, while others were not. They were able to use this opportunity to problem solve and assess what were some of the factors that allowed some seedlings to thrive, while others

or college for up to five years and 300 dollars a semester for textbooks. Nova’s Law and Public Policy Innovative Program uniquely prepares students to solve problems and improve their community. The program begins in 9th grade and continues through 12th grade. It offers multiple courses per year that invite students to develop real-world skills that will then be applied to a community service project of their choice. Students gain knowledge and skills in seven courses over a four-year period. Courses in the Program include: Comprehensive Law (Honors), Constitutional Law (Honors), AICE Law, AICE General Paper, AICE Global Perspectives, AP Research, and AP Seminar. Students that successfully complete all Program courses and Exams will graduate with a Special Certification in Law and Public Policy that will be recognized at graduation. In the 2020-2021 school year, students in the Program have participated in several events and activities in and with our local community. Students attended a conference held by the Hispanic Bar Association. They participated in a conference with the first Hispanic Female Florida Supreme Court Justice, the Honorable Judge Barbara Lagoa. Students compete in the Broward County Mock Trial Competition. Many students conducted civic projects aimed at improving their local community including: beach clean-ups, food drives, toy drives, and 1000’s of hours volunteering throughout the county. Students in our Constitutional Law class wrote their own Legal Briefs and Orally defended against one another before professional legal scholars. Panelists for this event included Broward County Court Judges, Law Professors from Nova Southeastern University, and several practicing attorneys in the community. This upcoming year, we look forward to the Grand Opening of our state-of-the-art full-size courtroom located on our campus. This will give Nova High and Nova Middle two fully-dedicated courtrooms at our facility. Nova High School is located at 3600 College Avenue in Davie. Their Principal is Olayemi Awofadeju. They can be reached at (754) 323-1650.

withered. Also, students work the garden beds by pulling weeds to prepare for the seedlings and by filing the beds with newly purchased garden soil. All this preparation enabled them to take ownership not only of their seedlings, but their school garden. Students enjoyed watching their tiny seedlings grow into fruit bearing plants. Working in the garden bridges those connections between students and their food, using interdisciplinary instruction that includes resources from Ag in the Classroom, Gardening for Nutrition and Nutrients for Life through hands-on STEM related activities. At the end of each season each student in the school gets to taste-test each variety. In previous years they were able to try their garden-fresh carrots, tomatoes, lettuce, and kale. Last year she added Kohlrabi and Romaine lettuce. During these trying times, our students might experience the garden in a different way, but it will still be a part of our program. This year we are expanding our outdoor learning space by converting an old asphalt bike area to an additional garden area with native trees, raised beds, and compost tumblers. Griffin Elementary is located at 5350 SW 90th Avenue in Cooper City. Their Principal is Angie Moodliyar-Jones. They can be reached at (754) 323-4100.

avie Elementary celebrated the beginning of the 2021/2022 school year with a fun and exciting theme to welcome its students back to campus. The theme “Passport to Success” is being incorporated throughout the school’s hallways and extra-curricular activities, including our PTO Events and Parent Nights. Due to the pandemic, our school was given funding for extra support personnel to assist students with the learning gaps that they may have from the previous year. We welcomed five new Resource teachers as well as a Math Coach to help bridge the gaps in Language Arts and Math. We also said goodbye to a few teachers who after many years of teaching at Davie Elementary, decided to retire and enjoy life after teaching. We bid a fond farewell to Ms. Fiero, Ms. Meeks and Mr. Griffin, as well as two of our long-time Teacher Assistants, Ms. Vicki and Ms. Freeman and Ms. French, our Media Clerk. Now that students returned to campus, we are able to enjoy many fun activities that are special to Davie.
