Dear readers, in a recent trip to Providence, rhode island, i was able to enjoy the scenery and atmosphere complete with changing leaves, small towns decorating their streets with holiday decor and the cool weather filling with the smells of a toasty fireplace, cinnamon and warm apple cider. back in our beautiful city of Fort Lauderdale, i see that cooler weather is in the air; however, our beaches are still filled with the warm sunlight and the refreshing feel of the crisp atlantic water. i believe we live in a great place where we are able to paddleboard, play volleyball, take a boat ride and enjoy our warm sun while simultaneously preparing for the holiday season by decorating our homes with festive lights, baking delectable treats we only indulge in once a year and shopping for the most ideal and personal gifts. For most of us, it’s a joyous time we look forward to each year and spend with our loved ones. Unfortunately, that is not the same scenario for some of our local families. For them, the winter months and holiday season can bring heavy hearts yearning to be uplifted. While we can look forward to the great weather we have coming in the spring, the colder weather remains with longer and lonelier days. as, i become more involved with our community, i realize there are many influential and effective organizations in which each of us can be involved, helping ease a variety of needs. recently, i fulfilled a long-time dream of becoming a guardian ad Litem. While in my training, i started thinking of all the little things we can do as a community to make a huge impact in someone’s life. as i looked around and met all the outstanding people in my class, i realized our community is comprised of givers who are more than willing to lend a hand to those who are in need. The city of Fort Lauderdale has hundreds of nonprofit organizations developed to assist the hungry, the sick, the underprivileged, the homeless, the elderly — and the list goes on. With this in mind, i would like to personally invite you to choose at least one organization and offer some type of aid. it can be time, money or even non-monetary donations such as clothing, blankets and housewares. in reflecting on my time as a foster child, i can personally say opening a wrapped present meant the world to me. The simplest of gifts, even if just a pencil and paper, brought me joy. everyone has the potential to make this kind of impactful difference. For example, wanting to take us on a trip to Minnesota, my foster mother was on a strict budget; however, she realized how important it was for us to have as real of a Christmas as possible. she went to the Christmas tree tent and asked if she could buy all the branches that were left on the ground. Using the little resources she had coupled with a great amount of love and creativity, she took a board, drew a tree on it and devotedly attached every branch to it. although the tree was not the best on the block, it was undoubtedly the best tree in my heart! she made an impact; she made a difference. Let’s each fi ll our holiday season with love, thankfulness, forgiveness and compassion, with understanding to our family, friends, and neighbors. Which is why, for me, it is the season to give. happy holidays!

Dear Neighbors:

As we head into the final months of the year, the City of Fort Lauderdale brings you an outstanding lineup of special events for the entire family! The City, in partnership with the William C. Morris American Legion Post 36, will host a Veterans Day Ceremony on November 11th at 11:00 am at the Sandy Nininger Statue, located on the Riverwalk behind the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Join us as we express our gratitude and appreciation for the courage and sacrifices our Veterans make each and every day to protect our nation and preserve our freedom. Experience a Fort Lauderdale Thanksgiving Day tradition on November 27th, by participating in the 4th Annual Turkey Trot & Paddle. This unique event offers participants a chance to compete in a 5K run/walk or a 2-mile stand-up paddleboard race. Both races begin at 7:30am and run along world famous A1A, providing competitors with breathtaking views of the Fort Lauderdale sunrise. The excitement continues as we ring in the holidays with three spectacular “Light Up” events. Join us on November 13th at 6:30pm for “Light Up Lauderdale,” as we showcase a dazzling display of lights and decorations along downtown’s picturesque Riverwalk. “Light Up the Beach” takes center stage on November 25th at 6:30pm as we illuminate a larger-than-life holiday display at A1A and Las Olas Boulevard and enjoy a free holiday band concert. Historic Sistrunk Boulevard comes alive on December 7th at 5:30pm with “Light Up Sistrunk,” featuring a free toy giveaway, kids zone with real snow, photos with Santa and the lighting of a gigantic holiday tree. Fort Lauderdale’s holiday celebration hits high gear on Saturday night, December 13th with the Seminole Hard Rock Winterfest Boat Parade. Billed as the “Greatest Show on H2O,” the boat parade draws 1 million spectators to the shores of our New River for an enchanted evening on the water that symbolizes the spirit and tradition of the season. We culminate the holiday season with the Fort Lauderdale Orange Bowl Downtown Countdown, a spectacular New Year’s Eve celebration along SW 2nd Street that draws hundreds of thousands of locals and visitors to our City. The event showcases Fort Lauderdale to a global audience, strengthens our reputation as a must-see destination, and generates millions for our local economy. All of these events are made possible through the hard work of City staff and the generous contributions of our sponsors. But what truly makes these events so special is the tremendous support they receive from all of you – our neighbors. As we move forward, we will continue to promote high profile special events that enhance tourism, foster community spirit, and enrich quality of life, while working together to make Fort Lauderdale the best place to live, work, play, visit and raise a family.

Enjoy the holidays!

T

o look at the wonder of a Cirque du Soleil artist’s body, one can only imagine the amount of training, conditioning, strict calorie counting and discipline that makes up a daily routine. Just what does it take to be able to bend, stretch and contort the body into such incredible and mind-blowing positions? Or to fly one-handed 30 feet in the air above an awestruck audience? It would probably surprise you to know that the artists of Cirque du Soleil’s Amaluna, coming to Miami in December this year, don’t actually give too much thought to what they are eating, drinking or doing in their down time. Although the troupe travels with four chefs, two physiotherapists and two coaches, these roles are seen as guides and resources, rather than a police force. “Our artists are professional athletes,” says Amaluna’s Head Coach Yohann Renne. “They have been practicing habits to keep their strength and agility at the level it needs to be from around the time they could walk.” Renne explains that the artistic support team will always guide an artist if they are feeling weak or rehabilitating through an injury, and provide assistance to those who seek it, but the goal is not to enforce specific training as each artist has their own tried and true methods of looking after themselves. Physiotherapist Lisa Basarab, says her role is to provide clinics and sports medicine to the performers, which aids in injury prevention and management, however, she says that the artists are all held accountable for their conditioning and physique. “In each city we visit, we hire a local masseuse and Pilates instructor and often invite guest teachers onsite to provide dance and yoga classes to keep the artists stimulated,” says Basarab. “Performing eight to ten shows per week means they get an

incredible workout just by being onstage, but it is important to their physical and mental wellbeing to be able to enjoy other types of conditioning.” These classes and training options are not enforced, and are simply a suggestion available for those who want it. There is also an elliptical machine and small fly-weight gym machine set up in the Artistic Tent (the onsite training facility) available for the artists to use and Basarab notes that about 80% of the tour members travel with bicycles (there are 46 artists working on Amaluna in addition to 68 technicians and support staff) to be able to explore the city they call home for six to eight weeks before moving on to the next destination. “People on tour have an adventurous spirit,” says Amaluna’s Company Manager Franck Hanselman. “Although the tour only gets one day off per week, you will often see anything from groups of cyclists and hikers to rock-climbers and runners, to scuba-divers and surfers and snowboarders! Since we are always on the move, there is always someplace new to explore and we are a very active bunch.” The onsite kitchen at Cirque du Soleil’s Amaluna prepares over 250 meals per day, but it is not always as health-conscious as you might think. “Our company was founded in Québéc, Canada, and the national dish there is Poutine – which is French fries topped with cheese curds and brown gravy. Definitely not what you would consider to be ‘professional athlete food!’” says Hanselman. “The chefs are feeding everyone onsite from the technicians, electricians, welders, plumbers and carpenters to the artists, musicians and

gymnasts – and everyone in between! With 17 different nationalities represented on tour, our kitchen does a wonderful job of preparing dishes from all over the world.” Acrobatic coach Misha Galkin says, “It is the responsibility of the artist to ensure they are getting the nutrients they need to perform their best; however, they are burning off so many calories during a performance that they can get away with eating pretty much what they want. We don’t enforce meal plans, curfews or restrictions but we are always available to give advice.” Galkin explains that when the artists first join Cirque du Soleil, they are met by a team of nutritionists and specialists at the company’s headquarters in Montréal to ensure they are equipped with the right information to look after themselves and continue a healthy career. Amaluna features a 70% female cast, which is a flip on the traditional casting of a Cirque du Soleil show where the male contingent usually represents 70% - 75% of the artists. Amaluna was created as the first Cirque du Soleil show in 30 years to represent and showcase the strength and power of women, while maintaining femininity and grace. Written and directed by Tony Awardwinning director, Diane Paulus, Cirque du Soleil’s Amaluna premieres under the iconic blue and yellow Big Top at Sun Life Stadium on December 11, 2014. n Saturday September 20, at Hugh Taylor Birch State Recreation Area, many people joined forces during the International Coastal Cleanup Day for a very good cause: keeping our beaches clean. Hundreds of volunteers worked not only here in Fort Lauderdale, but in different places all over the world, to promote and support the safeguard of the world we live in. The event was sponsored by the Ocean Conservancy and the National Sea Turtle Foundation. Anyone could participate and help out, spending a few hours of a regular Saturday morning doing something extraordinary for our environment and our community. Many schools in the area came together to show their support for a great cause that involves each one of us. After registering with the helpful volunteers and coordinators, the kids were given a free t-shirt, gloves, and trash bags. They were instructed to use two different trash bags: one for the garbage to be disposed and the other for recycling. They also had a clipboard with a special form containing a list of different items they could find along the way. Their job was in fact to keep track of what they were collecting, too. In a few minutes, the beach was “patrolled by different groups of people

treasure hunting for unusual objects left behind by distracted or careless individuals. In a matter of a couple of hours, the kids filled up dozens of trash bags, collecting all kinds of objects. Young children with their families, teens, and adults alike looked as careful as they could, trying not to miss anything. They searched not only the beach, but also anywhere close to the bushes towards the street, since the volunteers explained to them at the beginning of the day that the winds tend to blow often in that direction, collecting and hiding all the trash in the vegetation. At the end of the day, a diversified carousel of items was ready to be disposed of or recycled, piled up in a corner. Of all the items collected, it seemed like the most popular this year was the cigarette butts. Over 50 pounds of cigarette butts were collected! When it comes to saving our planet, we should always remember that every little bit counts. There are many different ways in which we can help, and numerous associations and foundations we can refer to. For more information on how to join any volunteer service or to look for events in your area, please visit http://www.broward.org/Parks/GetInvolved/Pages/ Volunteers.aspx, www.oceanconservancy.org, or www.savetheseaturtle.org.

ack in 1992, Renée Herman took it upon herself to organize a food drive at Country Isles Elementary that would provide a week’s worth of groceries to 20 Weston area families who were down on their luck. She rallied the students to help with neighborhood canned food drives and camped outside of Publix Supermarkets to accept donations. They succeeded and the 20 families in need were fed. But she didn’t stop there. Twenty-two years later, Renée is still on a mission to stamp out hunger and help families in need. Since the inaugural Harvest Drive, the number of families in need multiplied, as did the amount of help required to accomplish such a task. After many years of orchestrating the details of this annual event, Renée has been blessed with several special people to assist her in her efforts. Patti Bradley, Kim O’Neill, Susan Gross, Davi Leoniff, Jodi Samson and Amy Freund all volunteer to share the responsibilities. It takes thousands of people to make this happen every year. “Organizations such as the Rotary Club of Weston and Plantation Rotary have been instrumental in helping with donations and money to buy groceries. Businesses such as The Castle Group help with a tremendous amount of volunteers. Individuals such as Jamie McDonnell, Michael Dagen, Jim Norton, Michael Freedland and Steve Goldstein, among many others, have been life savers in the 11th hour when we did not have enough food for the promised families,” said Renée. Another unique characteristic of the program is the compassion and dedication displayed each year by students who contribute. “What really makes this work, what is really special about Harvest Drive, is that it is the students and the schools that gather what we need and volunteer their time to make this a reality,” she says. Many of the students volunteer every year and she has formed a lasting bond with them throughout her time organizing the Harvest Drive. “Teaching children at an early age that their contributions can make a difference in the lives of others is what makes this project so rewarding,” Renée adds. Not only does this make the hard work and sacrifice pay off, it gives her hope for the future and inspires her to do even more.

This year, 180 public and private schools are involved in the mission to collect enough food to feed over 2,000 families throughout Broward County. Distribution sites will be set up at 12 local schools, with Western High School being the largest. In addition to these sites, approximately 168 other schools will be taking donations that will then be divided up between the area distribution sites. Families with children in the Broward County Schools are referred to the Harvest Drive by Broward County social workers as well as other local social service agencies based on their financial need. In addition to the week’s worth of groceries and Thanksgiving dinner, families are able to shop in the Harvest Drive’s makeshift stores for a variety of household items that have been donated. Volunteers work all year long collecting donations for the “Harvest Drive Boutiques” so that these families may find things they need at no cost to them. Western High, Pompano High and Westglades Middle School will be fully stocked with items such as toiletries, shoes, gently used toys, clothes and books. Items that many of us may take for granted are most in need by these families. “What keeps me awake at night worrying is that the day before the families arrive that week before Thanksgiving, we will be short. We need cash donations so we can buy the items we are short in the 11th hour. I cannot bear that our local, neighborhood families will go hungry when so many individuals, businesses and organizations have so much to give,” she said. Herman does not comprehend the word “no” when it comes to Harvest Drive. Her passion, persistence and work ethic will not allow her to accept “no”. The Harvest Drive team continues their efforts throughout the year. They would like to give special recognition to the North Broward Preparatory Middle School for their Fundraising efforts and collections for Harvest Drive. For the past 2 years they have assisted 75 Broward County School families with food and a boutique at their Spring Into Action Drive. “100% goes to these families in need! No one gets paid to run this organization,” Renée says. “We need more help. Hunger is a year round challenge.”

Host a Neighborhood Food Drive to collect non-perishables and things from the list below. Donate whatever amount of money or and non-perishable food you are able to give. Feed the volunteers on Monday or Tuesday before Thanksgiving. Donate toothbrushes, toothpaste, toiletries, clothes, books and toys. THE ART OF

FENCING By Shelley Jukanovich

F

encing, a European Martial Art, involves the action or art of practicing attack and defense using the foil, epee or sabre. Originating in ancient Egypt and Rome, fencing is known to have begun around 1200 B.C. with the purpose of preparing men for duels and warfare battles. Fencing has evolved over the centuries, changing from what was once a violent form of warfare into the non-violent sport that it is today. Borislav Iordanov, owner of Hollywood Sabre in South Florida, has been fencing for about twenty years and brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to his fencing academy. Boris’s dad was head of the BFF (Bulgarian Fencing Federation). Boris spent his childhood around top Bulgarian sabre athletes. In the 1980’s at the age of 9, Boris began his training at what used to be called the “Army Club” in communist Bulgaria. About his training, Boris says, “Eventually I became the first student of one of the best fencers in the world at that time, three-time World Cup Champion, Vassil Etropolski. As a result, I was able to win the National Championship and multiple medals including a first place medal in a few World Cup Tournaments at the Junior Level. My career as a competitor was cut short when we immigrated to Canada.” In early the early 2000s, Boris enjoyed being the Assistant Coach at the New York City Athletic Club before moving to South Florida. Anxious to return to the sport of his youth, Boris, along with Antoaneta Spassova, opened the Hollywood Fencing Academy where they are coaching today. Antoaneta, also a multiple National Champion and winner of the Balkan Games, brings her own expertise to the club. With their experience and love of the sport, these inspiring coaches are

making fencing champions. Hollywood Sabre placed third in the National Championship this year and has athletes who are bringing home world cup medals. One of those athletes, Ameen Borojerdi, is a contender for the U.S. Junior World Championship Team. When asked why he thinks that Fencing is such a great sport, Boris replies, “It’s really a combination of several aspects that make this sport so great: It’s a combat sport, yet a completely non-violent one. The skills necessary to master all of the moves take years to develop. There are no sequence of moves that are executed the same every time due to the subtle variations in timing, distance, and rhythm of each opponent. The speed of the sabre tip is the 2nd fastest moving object in the Olympics (after a bullet) so it takes an incredible amount of concentration to perform at an advanced level. The most enjoyable part, however, is probably the fact that one’s creativity is constantly being stimulated as in any really fun game where the rules are simple but the possibilities limitless. Also, it is an individual sport where you never get benched.” Boris likes the fact that there is a large spectrum of skills that are developed when a child participates in fencing. Some of those skills involve balance and coordination, quick decision-making, focus and anticipation, analytical skills, and mental strength. Fencing is not just for children. There are 70 year olds competing in veteran world championships. Fencing is a NCAA sport offered at nearly all top colleges and Ivy League Schools around the country. COACHING 101:

Sportsmanship + Teamwork = Winning by: Dr. Andrea Corn

Dear Dr. Corn, I consider it an honor and delight to be my son’s soccer coach. Drawing upon my readings, I have created a variety of instructive and challenging drills teaching basic maneuvers, game strategy and developing a positive attitude. Of course, making the drills fun is a top priority, too. This season, I happened to have one speedy runner among our 8–10 year olds. I was hoping he’d inspire the other players, but instead he’s starting to alienate a few less agile players with his hurtful remarks. A part of me can appreciate his intensity and desire to win. Yet, his inability to support his fellow teammates’ efforts undermines my attempts to create team camaraderie, which is so important to this process. Do you have any ideas for what I might say to this young athlete and perhaps the entire team to help boost team unity? Thank you, Soccer Coach

Dear Soccer Coach,

Did you know, earlier this year Liberty Mutual conducted a Play Positive Sportsmanship Survey*, (based on over 2,000 parents and coaches responses). Their findings reported that “learning teamwork and sportsmanship” are two of the most important features in youth sport participation. Yet, sadly, 50% of parents and coaches would tell you that sportsmanship has decreased from the time they played as children. If this number is ever going to reverse, it has to start with parents and coaches leading the way by practicing good sportsmanship on and off the field. You must be the positive role model who appropriately speaks up. You must make it clear; soccer is a team sport and will be won or lost by the efforts of the entire group. It’s up to you to impress upon every player that his or her contribution matters – whether passing, defending, or scoring a goal. Sometimes the least athletic player does something unexpected and enables his team to win. Guide your players to focus on trying their best and to put their attention on their own on-field

performances – whether it’s footwork or running hard up and down the field. And, for teammates watching on the sidelines, they can shout uplifting words of encouragement. You realize how critical it is to instill good sportsmanship, as players need to learn to treat one another with respect, dignity, and kindness. If one player on your team cannot abide by the rules, your whole team suffers. Speak with him or her privately and share your concerns. If the problem persists, inform and involve his parents. Begin by asking if they have any ideas to help resolve the problem. At least, your actions are saying how much you value good sportsmanship. Here are a few other ideas to consider: 1.) At the beginning of the season, provide a onepage handout with your mission statement, team goals and appropriate parental conduct. In addition, make it clear to your players that you expect them to follow the golden rule and demonstrate courtesy behavior to officials, adults watching on the sidelines, and all players, regardless of athletic ability. 2.) Do offer praise to any player who tries his best, regardless if it resulted in a positive outcome. Support determination and perseverance. Getting everyone to conduct themselves appropriately may pose challenging moments. But, if you can manage to lead by example and uphold these principles, your team will be a winner regardless of their standings in the league. * https://play-positive.libertymutual.com/2014-sportsmanship-survey

PACK A GREENER, HEALTHIER LUNCH BOX By Louise Hajjar Diamond

ike most busy Americans, I’m ashamed to say that it wasn’t until recently that I started to consider personal lifestyle changes I could make to be more earth friendly. Being a mother of two school-aged children and a guidance counselor, I am acutely aware of the amount of nonbiodegradable waste that daily school lunches produce. The biggest culprit of waste production isn’t the public school cafeteria; it’s those lunches we parents pack. As Americans, we have come to rely on many convenience products that include how we pack lunches for our kids. Most parents pack lunch items in single-use plastic bags, aluminum foil, wax paper, or buy single-serving items that come in their own disposable package. These products may save us some time in the morning rush but the environmental cost is staggering. Landfills are full and overflowing. Incinerators expel contaminants and toxins into the air. Much of the trash we generate comes from the packaging on the food we buy and lunch foods are a major contributor. It has been estimated that on average one school-age child using a disposable lunch generates 67 pounds of waste per school year. While most of us enjoy the convenience of disposal products, none of us want more landfills and pollution near us. Let’s think about the beverage factor. If we replaced the disposal plastic water bottle (which costs about 50 cents each) with a reusable container, we’d save, an average of $90 per school year, per child. That’s only if a child drank one per day at lunch. We haven’t considered aftercare, baseball or soccer practice! I know the convenience of those throw away bottles. I have actually found it easier to wash out the reusable containers, than to lift, unload, remove the plastic seal, and store those heavy prepackaged bottles of water. Avoiding single-sized boxes and bottles of juice can save on your weekly grocery bill and also reduce your child’s caloric intake. Filtered tap water tastes and quenches thirst just as well. Here’s more food for thought. We can save on money, calories and help our planet if we steer away of prepackaged lunches and snack items. Prepackaged snack items often have more food than kids need. After all, we prefer that our kids eat one or two cookies, not five or six. Processed food is often high in fat and sodium, too. According to wastefreelunches.org, families can save nearly $245 per school year per child, by packing lunch in reusable containers instead of plastic bags, wax paper, plastic utensils, and those singe-use-prepackaged items. Instead of a plastic

disposal bag or other single-use containers, we can use a reusable container and toss it in the dishwasher on the top rack or hand wash nightly. In reality it costs us more money and effort to throw things away than to hand wash. When we reuse instead of dispose, we’re actually using less garbage bags and making fewer trips to curb. It’s easier said than done to change our mindset and habits from stuffing our kids’ lunches with prepared meals and snacks to actually packing a lunch the old-fashioned way. Amy Hemmert, President of Obentec, Inc., a California based company that makes lead free waste-free lunch kits and lunch box systems suggests, “planning ahead and stocking kitchen with wholesome choices, including nuts and dried fruits.” She says to get the kids involved as they grow older and give them more responsibility and independence. Maximize leftovers by making a little bit extra the night before and pack it the next day for lunch. Hemmert’s products assist consumers in packing healthy and waste-free lunches quickly and easily. It’s easy enough to pack a few fresh berries or grapes in a lunch box (in a reusable container, of course!). Apples and bananas are simply wholesome and easy to pack! Avoid donuts and processed packaged brownies. Studies have shown that food additives and artificial coloring are harmful to the growth and development of our school children. As a general rule, food choices are healthier if they come from the earth instead of a factory or laboratory. Additionally, another great way to be earth friendly is to eat less meat and dairy. As a guidance counselor and teacher, I can attest that healthy food choices absolutely make a difference in the learning process. Children who eat a healthy, high protein, lunch (and breakfast) tend to be attentive and less sluggish than children who eat processed food high in sugar, sodium, and fat. Whether we want to or not, the time is now to re-think our habits and become more earth friendly. What better way to teach kids about their individual responsibility to take care of our planet than to discuss with them the differences in their school lunch boxes? Kids actually adjust to change better than adults do. School children will learn to care for our earth through waste reduction at lunchtime. In doing so they will gain an understanding of the importance of what we put into our bodies and what we feed our mother earth! Louise Hajjar Diamond is a guidance counselor and freelance writer who has discovered the satisfaction of packing healthy, earth friendly lunches.

CALL THE OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST! H

ow many parents can agree that homework went well tonight? If not, there may be underlining reasons your child is having a hard time. Rather than fight with them night after night, some parents have hired tutors, and yet, homework is rarely completed within the session and the problem continues. There are many factors that may be impacting your child’s ability to perform academic work independently. • How well did they pay attention to the lecture when the lesson was taught? • Are they able to plan and pack the materials required to complete the homework? • What is their ability to read and interpret the instructions, formulate answers and produce them on paper? A child’s ability to perform academic work is dependent on multisensory processing, more simply said, their ability to take in information within their environment, interpret it and perform adequate postural and motor responses. If your child is slouched over in their chair, holding their head up or grasping a pencil awkward, how is he or she supposed to produce legible writing? If they are not able to visually attend to tasks, track, or maintain place when reading, how are they supposed to interpret what was read? If sounds, smells, objects easily distract your child, how well do you think they attend to lectures in class? Occupational Therapists evaluate and treat underlying foundation deficits causing poor academic performance. Therapists assess muscle strength, joint range of motion, postural stability, fine, gross and visual motor skills, visual perception, attention, selfhelp skills, and overall sensory processing to determine strengths and limitations that may be impacting performance. Following assessment and testing, an analysis is performed on your child’s abilities, limitations, and the environments in which they need to function. Therapists are skilled at remediating deficits, adapting the environments and or task to maximize independent success and overall function. In order to obtain the most effective treatment for your child, understand there are different models of practice governing occupational therapy and the problems you will encounter.

By Eva Pacchetti-D’Amaro OTR/L, Developmental Specialist

Under the “medical model,” you private insurance required treatment is, “medically necessary.” In addition, they dictate how much treatment is covered. More often than not, treatment is denied and/or reduced to a limited amount that yields less than desired outcomes. Therapists are forced to conduct shorter sessions and only the amount authorized for the year. Children make little progress, decline when sessions end and return the next year. Under the “educational model,” treatment is only determined necessary if it optimizes function within an educational setting. However, in Broward County, children must require treatment for speech and language services prior to being referred for occupational therapy. In addition, therapy within the school environment is limited to paper, pencil and tabletop activities, where most children who have academic difficulties need motor and movement treatment. Private practice: Private pay occupational therapy intervention is not governed by the Medical and or Educational models of practice. Intensive programs developed by skilled clinicians who incorporate advanced evidence based on practice methods without restrictions yield optimal results. This often prevents long-term academic struggles and essentially saves families a great deal of time and money long term.

THE PROUD AND HUMBLE RECIPIENT OF THE RENSSELAER MEDAL PROGRAM AWARD By: Shane Richardson

As a student from Stranahan, I am humbled to receive this award

from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. This scholarship is for at least $15,000 a year for 4 years to attend Rensselaer. I feel very proud to be accepted to a prestigious university such as this, especially one so adept in engineering (my intended major). Amongst schools, I am currently applying to well-known engineering universities such as MIT, Columbia University, Caltech and UC Berkeley. However, receiving a scholarship to Rensselaer could make a huge impact on my decision regarding college. My first choice remains to be MIT and if accepted, I would most likely choose MIT, on the basis that I am given enough scholarships and financial aid to be able to attend. If, however, I am not able to afford one of these universities, Rensselaer would be a good safety net school for me to attend. I actually did not apply for this scholarship, rather I was nominated by my outstanding engineering magnet coordinator, Mr. Formoso, who I owe a great deal of thanks

for all of the hard work he has done to make me into the student I am today. In terms of the future, I would of course like to go into the engineering. I would like to study aerospace engineer as well as a minor in psychology in order to get a job building the next generation of reusable space shuttles, researching and developing tomorrow’s technology. The subject of engineering has always fascinated me. Since I was young I always loved to take things apart and figure out how they work and the mechanics of them. This has led me to take a plethora of math and science classes in high school to pursue this passion; in fact, in 10th grade I was the youngest person to take AP Calculus at our school. Stranahan has been a great tool in shaping the way I think and everyone has been encouraging in my pursuits. I thank everyone that was involved, they deserve this award as much as I do.

breeze, remained as witnesses of a goal that each one of us can’t help hoping for. This event is only one of the many activities that Virginia Shuman Young Elementary offers to its students. The school’s approach to education is, in fact, based on the Montessori Method, founded by Maria Montessori, an Italian physician. These interactive events allow the kids to grow and develop their own skills, communication and personalities in a “prepared environment” that offers both structure and freedom. This approach promotes independence and recognizes the uniqueness of each child, helping him or her to achieve their best. According to Maria Montessori, education and peace walk hand in hand. Education always plays a fundamental role in the development of world peace. Such students, she thought, will help create a more peaceful and enduring civilization for generations to come. To get more information on Virginia Shuman Young Elementary and the programs they offer, you can visit http:// www.broward.k12.fl.us/virginiayoung, or you can contact the office at (754) 322-9050. You will find useful information about their Magnet Program, the dates for the application for the next school year (the deadline is February 11, 2015), and much more. “...preventing conflicts is the work of politics; establishing peace is the work of education.” --Maria Montessori

New River Middle School Gets a Logo Makeover From Guy Harvey N

ew River Middle School’s logo has taken on a new look! The school’s mascot is the shark, but now it has a full-color lifelike rendering of a tiger shark, painted by renowned marine artist and conservationist, Guy Harvey. New River is partnering with the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation, which sponsors ocean marine research and conservation projects, to enhance its marine science magnet program. The partnership and new logo were announced at the unveiling ceremony on Tuesday, September 30th. “This logo carries a responsibility,” Harvey told students through a videotaped message. “We need each and every one of you to be devoted to marine conservation and to always speak up and advocate for sharks and other marine animals.” As part of this partnership, the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation and Nova Southeastern University Oceanographic Research Center are teaming up coordinating field trips to support the marine science program. Students will have the opportunity to go on boats with researchers to help identify and tag sharks and then follow their whereabouts through an NSU website. students with an in-depth exploration of Florida’s coastal habitats and encourages students to appreciate the environment and become involved in conservation efforts by being stewards for the marine environment. Part of the unveiling event included presentations about sharks and research at Nova Southeastern University from Dr. Derek Burkholder. He spoke to the students regarding the variety of sharks and the research being done to track sharks and learn more about them. The Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation wants to convey the message that sharks aren’t to be feared. Jessica Vaughn, 22, of Sunrise, was bitten by what’s believed to be a five to six-foot bull shark while tubing in the Intracoastal Waterway with friends June 1. She’s making a swift recovery through physical therapy and has agreed to be a “shark ambassador,” talking to students in schools about sharks. She made her first appearance at New River during the unveiling ceremony. Jessica said, “It was a wonderful day to be a shark and even better to be a “New River Shark!” For more information about New River Middle School and the Marine Science Magnet Program, go the website http://newriver.browardschools.com or call (754) 323-3600.

irginia Shuman Young Elementary celebrated the International Day of Peace on Monday, September 21st. The International Day of Peace is aimed to remember and recognize the efforts and the sacrifices of all those people who have worked hard to end war and conflict and promote peace. This special day was established by the United Nations (UN) in 1981. Up until 2001, the Peace Day was celebrated on the third Tuesday of September, but in 2002 the UN decided to set September 21 as the International Day of Peace. As many other people all over the world, the students at Virginia Shuman Young Elementary came together to commemorate and celebrate this special day. They were asked to wear white, as a symbol of hope and peace. Teachers and students worked together to create colorful drawings, they wrote peace statements on pieces of paper and turned them into wonderful objects of art. One by one, the kids made their way towards the gate surrounding the school and hung their little masterpieces with strings and ribbons of different colors. Slowly, the plain fence came alive and the smiles and laughter of the children gave voice to a silent hope for a peaceful future all over the world. As regular classes resumed, and the students headed back to their desks, the school continued its regular schedule, but outside, the drawings of the children moved by a light

t Wilton Manors IB World School, our students learn, explore and interact with the 12 Attitudes of our International Baccalaureate Program and our Passport to Peace Character Education Program. The goal is that the students will ultimately infuse the 12 Attitudes of Confidence, Independence, Commitment, Cooperation, Creativity, Empathy, Tolerance, Respect, Enthusiasm, Curiosity, Integrity and Appreciation, into the core of their character. The Walk for Peace originally began in 2003, where the vision was for the parents and students of Wilton Manors Elementary, along with all the people in the City of Wilton Manors to become aware of and rally around the 12 Attitudes that help us to become more tolerant of individuals and their various differences; thus leading towards a more peaceful community and world. The Walk for Peace has now gone beyond the

City of Wilton Manors and the students of Wilton Manors Elementary, to encompass individuals and families from all over South Florida who are committed to the 12 Attitudes and the ideas of tolerance and peace. By gathering as a community to celebrate unity in diversity, it helps our children to understand how important and valued the Attitudes are by everyone in the community, and how they can become the fabric of a peaceful community and world. We envision a day when all children grow up to be thoughtful, productive, committed and engaged citizens who will contribute back to their local and global communities and promote peace. Please join our Walk for Peace on Saturday, November 15, 2014 at 8:00am in our school cafeteria. A light breakfast will be served prior to our 3k walk through our neighborhood and city.

e offer a variety of programs and activities, including boys soccer, girls soccer, flag football, cheerleading, track basketball, and many more. The girls’ soccer team, “Lady FALCONS” had a few difficult years, but thanks to the commitment, effort, and passion of the girls, and with the leadership of their coach, Mrs. Summar Barnett, the team was able to come out victorious. The hard work has pay off!! The coach was able to build a great team spirit highlighting the strength of each player to achieve what has become

a new self-confident and winning team. The girls’ soccer team has, in fact, broken a long losing streak, winning their last three games with the other team scoring nothing. The Sunrise Middle School boys’ soccer team, “FALCONS”, is also off to a great season. Once again, with the help of a great coach, Mr. Paul Wynn, and the determination and enthusiasm of the boys, the team has come a long way by breaking an 8 game losing streak. Congratulations to both teams!
