Dear Families, Clients and Readers,

It’s such a great time to be in Southwest Florida during the holidays and what a beautiful last few months. Since our first publication launched, it has been so rewarding to see all of our hard work realized. I am overwhelmed with the support we received from everyone we worked with throughout the Sarasota & Manatee Counties. Thank you for your encouragement and suggestions that have given me a clear direction and the fortitude to continue to expand this endeavor of bringing you everything you need to know about sports, activities, events and so much more in our community. As you know, it takes time to build a quality resource for our readers and get the word out to the community on the many features we have to offer. Sports & Activities Directory is excited to continue on this path in technology with the launch of our new APP. It’s FREE and simple to use from any iPhone or Smartphone. As we grow, the APP will be expanding, too. Our interactive App will have no limits in the way of helping families get the information that’s needed. From the vacationers to the locals, the APP can help direct you to that event, sports program, park or business. Please download this valuable resource, and share our App with your friends, families, neighbors, and even out of town family to let them know about the great things going on here on the Suncoast. Our focus with the new APP is to provide opportunities for you as a family to reach out and get involved with the community and its needs. With the holidays upon us, now is the time to explore and plan your upcoming “family-share” project. I am encouraging each of you to find out what “gift” it is that you may have in helping others. One suggestion is participating in Lauren’s Rainbow Run. Proceeds from this event will go to help teens afflicted with cancer. What better way to help than by supporting a great cause while getting some exercise and enjoying the fresh air? We have dozens of other walks & runs to support charities listed on our Family Fun Run pages. If that is not your thing, we have many other charitable organizations listed in our Clubs & Organizations page. Please have a look and find out what fits for you and your family, there is no better gift you can give your children than showing them the joys of giving your time and resources to those in need. As we grow, we want you to grow with us. Please remember to email us photos of your children involved in sports, activities and events. I’ll try to get them in the upcoming issues. Children love to see themselves in our directory and what a great keepsake! Remember, you can always visit us on the web at www.sportsandactivities.com for more information about our publication and those who advertise with us. From all of us at Sports & Activities Directory, we wish you a wonderful holiday season filled with blessings for the New Year. We look forward to seeing you off the bench and out on the field! Blessings to you, Corrie

Hello,

Manatee County is a special place. One of the things that makes us special is the generosity and willingness of people to get involved. We all have issues and causes that are close to our heart and, thankfully, there is most likely a local organization that strives to make a difference on that issue. For many of us, helping our young people be successful is a priority. Each year I am so proud of the impact local business people make by volunteering with the Manatee Chamber of Commerce in our schools. Through our Foundation, the Manatee Chamber presents Project TEACH and the Big Bank Theory using the time and talents of our Chamber members to reach students. Project TEACH delivers a hands-on career awareness program in 4th grade classroom across Manatee County. Chamber members visit the classroom to spend time with students talking about their careers and the steps it took to get to where they are today. It help these 4th graders learns more about career opportunities, stresses the importance of hard work and equates success in school to success in life. We typically reach more than 3,000 students – all in one day! Our Big Bank Theory program uses Chamber member volunteers to present a financial literacy activity in every high school in Manatee County. The students are assigned a life “profile” and must make choices on how to spend their family’s income on housing, transportation, healthcare, continuing education, utilities, entertainment and more. It’s an eye-opening experience for many of these students as they realize both the impact of their educational success on career opportunities and how important (and difficult) budgeting and spending choices are. We’ll be sending more than 100 Chamber members into our high schools in November and December and will reach approximately 2,500 students. As we all prepare for the holiday season, it is the perfect time of year to reflect upon the things most important to us. My list includes strong family relationships, good health, supportive networks of friends and the ability to contribute through meaningful work. I am blessed that Manatee County is my home for all of these things. Also, I am thankful for the countless fellow citizens who work hard to ensure that, regardless of what you’re dreaming of this holiday season, we all play a part in making Manatee County the best play to work, live and play. I encourage you to express your appreciation to the hundreds of non-profit, charitable organizations that provide critical services to those in need in our community. As has become all too clear, need knows no boundaries. The people these non-profits help are our neighbors, our co-workers and all of us personally. We encourage your year-end support of these organizations and their critical missions. Best wishes for a great end to 2014 and for health and prosperity in 2015.

Sincerely, Bob Bartz, President

Manatee Chamber of Commerce

By Antonio Saviano

The activities in the youth sector, 8 to 12 years of age have, as main objectives, the teaching of all individual abilities that represent the fundamental base of the game of soccer. The individual abilities are what we call the technical fundamentals, the individual tactical fundamentals and the techniques of the players. It is important that the young players use their own individual abilities during the game. Unfortunately, unexperienced instructors that work with these delicate age groups do not always incorporate the objectives mentioned above, but instead they turn their attention more towards activities related to the adult soccer players. Some of the reasons for these “deviations” could be because of the pressure from parents and also the desire to reach the “winning” results, of which, in many cases, can be very damaging for the younger age groups. Instructors insist on working on the collective tactics instead of the individual tactics and ignoring the development of the individual techniques, as this is an important aspect of the player development growth and require much patience, not only from the instructors as it does not show or bring fast results, but also from parents who are in many cases inpatient to see results. The game represents the most important moment for a self-evaluation of each player and an individual player evaluation for the instructors. It does not make sense, for example, that a player will work and learn all week to dribble, yet in the game they will not have the chance to dribble and take the

opponent’s player on. Therefore, playing with a different objective will not satisfy the technical needs of these age groups. Moreover, any size of field will not guarantee the involvement of all players, especially the ones with less skills, however, it gives a chance to each player, no matter what the skill level is, to be involved in the game and not hide. It will also give players a chance to show their technical abilities every time they have the ball on their feet. T

oday, running is popular among athletes and nonathletes. It offers many variations of events, such as sprints, marathons and cross-country that dates back to ancient Olympic games. Today, running has evolved into a highly competitive and technical sport that has challenges. Proper running techniques and methods must be adopted to maintain longevity in the sport and avoid injuries. Some helpful guidelines for the most beneficial results include: body preparation, form and technique, breathing, and building mental toughness. The shoe: Make sure it fits true to size, always wear a thin sock and lace them up tight at the arch up to the ankle and loose at the toes and balls of your feet. Find out your walking gait. Are you neutral? Or do you supinate or pronate? If possible, always run on grass, trail or dirt. Avoid running on concrete or asphalt to avoid injury and impact on the joints. Proper breathing and technique: Inhaling and exhaling oxygen through the mouth is the most efficient. Incorporating rhythmic breathing patterns, which is yoga like using the chest and belly, will also prevent injury as the feet stay in a ratio cadence with the breaths. The ration is dependent on how fast you are running and the incline of the terrain. This type of breathing lessens the stress and tension throughout the body. Avoid heel strikes! That equates to pain and injury. Making sure you run with proper body alignment having head over shoulders, shoulders over hips, hips over feet. Cross-train and keep a training log: Make sure you make gradual

strides don’t try and overdo it. Set goals, track progressions whether it be weight repetitions, yoga, Pilates, swimming and biking to assure all the muscles groups are balanced and being exercised. The more leg muscles that are conditioned will help lessen any injuries that may occur, making recovery and healing easier. Stretching: Dynamic stretching, which utilizes momentum from form, taught by sports trainers and coaches, is controlled movement focusing on many different muscle groups at one time. Static stretching, the elongation of the muscle holding for 30 seconds or longer is more to target a certain muscle. This is typically done after the workout when you are ready to become “static” or stationary. Don’t forget the cool down. Make sure the cool down is a good 10 to 15 minutes to allow the heart rate to slowly decrease back to normal heart rate. Do not stop dead in your tracks from a run. This is a recipe for a heart attack to the young and old. Nutrients: Carb load the night before a long run or race. Stay away from refined sugars and processed foods. Maintain a protein and vegetable diet. Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids days even weeks in advance. By the time you’re thirsty, it’s too late and dehydration has already set in. Avoid mental fatigue: Staying relaxed, focused, patient, optimistic, managing anxiety and all emotions help in a healthy recovery process from an injury and build mental toughness. We hope these helpful hints will help you OFF THE BLOCKS to running faster, longer and always hitting your stride both on the track and off.

ocated off of Tuttle Avenue and 17th Street is one amazing course, Sarasota BMX. Sarasota BMX has become one of the fastest growing attractions around with over 40 years of racing and raising champions; they have become a local household name to many. October was a busy month with the Strider SE Invitational. Striders lightweight balance bikes that help children as young as 18 months learn to ride on a two-wheel bike. What a fun and exciting event the SE Invitational was, with children ages 2 to 5 years old taking to the tracks on the little strider bikes. Children 6 years and older were also able to get involved by racing on 16 and 20 Strider bikes. Families from as far as North Carolina drove to participate in the Invitational this year. Children had a great time racing, face painting, and meeting some new friends like the Orioles Bird and Chick-Fil-A cow. The Charity Super Strider was a great success and proceeds from that race went to help support the Suncoast Charities for Children organization. Some of

the special needs children were given the opportunity to ride on the track. What a memorable and exciting time for all involved in making this a successful event. Just after hosting the Strider SE Invitational, Sarasota BMX was awarded additional funding to enhance and build the training facility and extended track that will be able to accommodate a multitude of international events. The funds would bring the track up to international and Olympic standards with an 8-meter ramp, electronic starting gates, and hopes for better parking. This expansion could benefit Sarasota tourism and bring in international travelers creating an economic impact on the area. Everyone is looking forward to what great things Sarasota BMX will have to offer. If you would like more information on Sarasota BMX or if you have an eager child wanting to ride the tracks, visit www.sarasotabmx.net or stop by 1500 North Tuttle Avenue, Sarasota. See you on the tracks!!

“Sports do not build character. They reveal it.” John Wooden, Legendary UCLA Basketball Coach

Youth basketball is an exciting sport than any boy or

girl can play at an early age. For over 25 years, Manatee PAL has managed youth sports programs. Basketball players start as young as 5 years old. Having your child learn basic basketball skills at a young age helps encourage exercise and serves as a basis for staying active later in life. Basketball is an exciting sport that combines team play and individual skills. Practicing in drills and plays helps children learn basic coordination and team-building skills. Playing in a recreational sport also allows kids to make new friends along the way. Team sports can improve a child’s ability to communicate and solve basic problems. Healthy competition at a young age prepares children to be gracious winners and cope with failures later in life. Lessons learned in basketball teach children social skills and coping strategies that are useful at school, home and in peer relationships. 1. Sportsmanship – Manatee PAL issues a sportsmanship code of ethics to all players. Courtesy on the court can translate to courtesy off-court as well. Practices and games are used to reinforce good sportsmanship. 2. Teamwork – Basketball is a team sport and sometimes players have to choose “we over me.” Practicing plays encourages players to assess their skill levels and often pass and support teammates in the team’s efforts to win. You learn to be a selfless player sometimes in order to make the goal.

3. Positive Attitude – Basketball is a competitive sport, but some teams win and some teams lose. Children who learn to maintain a positive attitude are more likely to use their mistakes as a springboard to becoming better. 4. Respect – Respect is earned, not given. When team players treat each other, opposing players, coaches, spectators and officials with respect, it naturally influences how others treat us back. Kids that give respect to others learn they get respect in return. In addition to children benefitting from recreational sports, the community benefits as well. A 1999 study by Eccles and Barber shows that youth sport participation is positively related to adult lifetime involvement in community activities. It also showed that kids who participate in sports are more likely to make friends, including those of different races. Other community benefits correlate directly to sports opportunities because idle time can be filled with activities that are healthy and positive. For example, when Phoenix, Arizona basketball courts and other recreational facilities were kept open until 2 a.m. during summer hours, juvenile crime dropped 55%. Similarly, crime rates dropped by 24% after late night recreation programs were started in Cincinnati, Ohio. Besides providing a source of fun and amusement, youth sports have many far-reaching benefits for both children and the community.

C an you believe October

is already over? Soon we will be trading those hot and humid summer days for the beautiful blue sky and warm temperatures that most living in Southwest Florida look forward to all year! October is most known for that candy-filled holiday which takes place on the last day, but October also happens to be National Orthodontic Health Month. This month-long event is organized by our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO). Our office is proud to be a member of the AAO, and we support their initiatives in spreading the word on choosing braces-friendly foods and taking proper care of the teeth and gums during orthodontic treatment. This becomes particularly important as Halloween approaches and children everywhere fill their trick-or-treat bags with all kinds of candy and other goodies. Halloween is a scary time for teeth, and we want to help you keep your smile bright after the candy is over! Many treats can cause trouble for trick-or-treaters with braces, clear aligners or other orthodontic appliances. These treats can potentially cause damage and lead to issues in the oral cavity and prolonged treatment times. This is why the AAO provides tips for Halloween participants who are undergoing orthodontic treatment. Sweets can be okay occasionally, provided everyone remembers to brush and floss after eating! The following are guidelines for orthodontic patients so that they can enjoy Halloween and still be on pace to achieve their healthy, beautiful smiles that we strive for at Baker Orthodontics. Ortho-Friendly Treats (In general, orthodontic patients should choose soft foods that are easier to chew): soft, melt-in-your-mouth chocolates, peanut butter cups, milk shakes, gelatin, peeled, thinly sliced apples, ice cream. Treats To Avoid (In general, orthodontic patients should avoid treats

that are sticky, hard, chewy or crunchy): caramel, nuts, licorice, jelly beans or taffy, bubble gum, candy corn, lollipops, popcorn, tortilla chips. This year, the AAO is also partnering with renowned chef, John Besh, to make life a little more delicious by personally selecting orthodontic-friendly recipes from his collection:

Caulifl ower Mac and Cheese

Ingredients: 1 pound penne pasta, 4 tablespoons butter, 1/4 cup flour, 1 quart milk, 1 pinch nutmeg, salt, freshly ground black pepper, 1 cup fresh ricotta cheese, 1⁄3 cup shredded swiss cheese, 3/4 cup shredded white cheddar cheese, 1 cup cooked cauliflower Directions: Preheat the oven to 375˚. In a large pot of boiling, salted water, cook the pasta for 12 minutes, uncovered, then drain in a colander. Melt the butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add the flour and cook, stirring constantly, for about a minute, then stir in the milk and bring to a boil. Keep stirring and when the white sauce is well mixed, reduce the heat to simmer. Add the nutmeg and season with salt and pepper. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the ricotta cheese. Add the pasta and toss well, then stir in the Swiss cheese and half of the cheddar. Scatter the cauliflower in an ovenproof 9x12 dish and spoon the pasta and cheesy sauce on top. Smooth the top with a spatula and sprinkle on the remaining cheddar. Bake for 20-30 minutes, until the cheese is nicely browned. *Makes 8 servings

Yogurt Fruit Pops

Ingredients: 1 1/2 cups fresh fruit, 1-cup plain yogurt, 2 1/2 tbsp. honey (more or less depending on the ripeness of the fruits), Popsicle molds and sticks Directions: Combine half the fruit, the yogurt, and honey in a blender and process until smooth. Cut the remaining fruit into the jar. Divide the mixture among the prepared Popsicle molds, making sure to distribute the cut fruit well. Insert wooden Popsicle sticks and freeze for 4 hours. *Makes 6 servings From Dr. Matthew Baker and the staff at Baker Orthodontics, we wish you a happy and healthy fall!!

Family Health

M

ore Than 18 years later and several up’s and down’s Family Network on Disabilities of Manatee/Sarasota, Inc. is starting to make a true impact on the families and the county we serve. We were started in 1986 as a Parent to Parent support group by a strong group of mothers wanting to help and support other mothers just like them. In 1992 we changed our name to Family Network in order to create an alliance of statewide support with Family Network on Disabilities of Florida, Inc. Little did we know that 18 years later we would still be here, still helping mothers, but now also fathers, siblings, grandparents, guardians, therapists, doctors, and the community. The last 5 – 8 years have been very productive for our organization. We have held an annual disability conference for the past 4 years on a variety of subjects and topics and will hold our next conference on April 17th of 2004. We produce a quarterly newsletter called “Family News Digest” that is distributed to almost 1,000 people and organizations. Three years ago we started a respite program, Sarasota/Manatee Respite Services, to support the families in our area. We now receive county funding for this program. This year we received funding to provide to our community the wonderful disability awareness program “More Alike Than Different” and we are scheduled through the month of April 2004 to provide this program to public and private schools in our area. We also opened an office and are continuing our work of supporting and teaching parents how to advocate for their children and adults with disabilities and special needs. I know this seems like a lot of accomplishments, but it has taken many years of dedication, hard work, and networking to become established and recognized as an agency that can make a difference. Those three things, dedication, hard work, and networking, are very important to being successful in working with families and the community on issues of concern for the disabled. A dedicated and determined Board of Directors is essential to getting things started. Don’t just look for individuals that have a child with a disability but also include people from the community that have a real concern and desire to help and make a difference. They and any volunteers you may acquire must be willing to work hard and sometimes preserver through difficult situations. Networking is a must. You have to learn all about

the agencies that can help your families and your organization. Making the right in-roads with these agencies and people is key to being successful. Helping each other out and collaborating honestly with everyone is critical. Our organization has gone through many peaks and valley’s over the past 18 years. At times we didn’t know where the next board member or even dollar would come from to keep us running. Somehow it has always worked out. Is it easy? Not all the time. Is it fun? Yes, most of the time. Is it frustrating? Yes, sometimes. Is it rewarding to be part of a support group or organization? You answer the question. When you hear stories about how an organization helped a family learn more about their child’s disability or how they were able to help a family acquire appropriate services for their child, or how Respite saved a marriage, or that non-disabled kids were learning about how to accept and become friends with children that have a disabilities, or that it was just nice to feel that you weren’t alone. These are just a few of the benefits you can receive by becoming involved with your local support group or by starting one in your own community. Take a chance and get involved. By Amy Hammond

Does it matter if your child knows the Gator chomp or

identifies garnet and gold as his favorite colors? As I searched for a vintage Tim Tebow jersey for my five year-old recently, I paused to consider the question. That jersey represents collegiate loyalty, no doubt, and the case for it is a strong one. Allegiance to a university can shape a young life and give it a direction that leads straight down the road to higher education. This loyalty often starts in infancy, with baby Gators dressed in “I Drool Orange and Blue” onesies. Florida State parents brag that their progeny identify Chief Osceola in a lineup by the time Junior can walk. Some University of South Florida tots apparently flash the “Go Bulls” sign from the incubator. You may consider this type of conditioning overkill. I label it strategic planning. Here’s what I know can happen when college devotion is cultivated at a young age. Around the time of my eighth birthday, my mother carefully pinned an Indiana University button to my shirt. Ten minutes later, I’d ripped it off to easier reach the spot on its underside that queued the IU fight song. I remember being transfixed at the idea of a school that had its own tune, a huge football stadium and loyal fans called Hoosiers who treated basketball like religion. “Tell me more, Mom and Dad!” I begged. What was this place called ‘college?’ I listened with wide-eyed delight

about the hybrid theme park/academic camp; a place where, my parents assured me, I could take all the English classes I wanted while saying “No way” to math lectures. Attendees played sports in fancy uniforms and legions of supporters cheered them on sight. Every weekend, families willingly drove hundreds of miles to campus with fancy grills just to do something called “tailgating.” Huge amounts of hot dogs and snacks were involved. I resolved to earn good grades and do whatever it took to increase my chances at attending such an educational mecca. Years later, as I stood outside my dorm at the University of Florida campus as a freshman, I felt a surge of delight that mimicked what I felt as a child at the gates of Disney World. It didn’t matter that I wasn’t wearing the colors of my childhood favorite. This was COLLEGE, and I’d spent most of my young life trying my hardest to stand in this spot. I haven’t yet found the right Tim Tebow jersey for my son, but you can bet I’ll keep looking. Amy Hammond is the author of five children’s books that encourage kids to attend college: When I Grow Up, I’ll Be a Gator, When I Grow Up, I’ll Be a ‘Nole, When I Grow Up, I’ll Be a Bull, When I Grow Up, I’m Bama Bound and When I Grow Up, I’ll Be a Tiger. They are available at http://www.MascotBooks.com, college bookstores and select retailers.

Schools excitement and pleasure to announce Braden River Middle as the winner to Best Middle Schools in Manatee County, presented by the Herald Tribune Reader’s Choice awards. BRMS was recognized as outstanding among the other schools and selected for its rigorous core academic selections, gifted programs, high school credit options, etc. Congratulations! Another award that BRMS received went to administrator, Kim ZenonRichardson for “School Coordinator of the Year.” Her hard work and dedication in bringing together business partners in the community to help get involved within the school is paying off. BRMS held their first Renaissance Assembly this new school year, with an ALS Ice bucket challenge, and the students were on hand to help. Renaissance is a reward program for students who earn a 3.3 GPA or higher or a grade improvement of .5 percent per quarter, 1s and 2s in citizenship and no discipline infractions resulting in in-school suspension.

These students have the opportunity to attend the monthly celebration with activities and prizes. This year the students raised money for the ALS association. Teachers who had the most money raised were given the ice bucket challenge. What a great way to get the students involved in such an important cause. More events to mark on your calendar and show your Panther Pride are Freddy’s Spirit night on November 18th from 4:00pm to 9:00pm and the Astroskate skating party on December 12th from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. From each of these events, a portion of the proceeds will be given right back to BRMS. Please RSVP in advance on our website at www.edline.net/ pages/sdmcbradenriverms if you will be joining us for these fun and exciting events so proper arrangements can be made. Thank you to all of the students and parents for starting this school year off with great pride. It’s going to be an awesome year. Congratulations on all of your accomplishments BRMS!

WILLIAMS ELEMENTARY Williams Elementary has been busy so far, thank

you for a wonderful start to the new school year. We received an “A” rating this school year and we are so proud of the accomplishments the students have made. Mrs. Stewart’s Kindergarten class has been learning about fire safety and what to do if there is an emergency. Manatee Memorial Hospital EMT Sherri Pellien an Kristin Kray provided the students with an opportunity to tour the inside of an ambulance and see first hand what medical equipment is used to help people in an emergency. The EMTs also discussed what happens when you call 911 and the importance of the student’s knowing their address. What a great way to teach children safety and while

having fun. Thank you to the EMT team who came out to make this possible. Please remember to mark your calendars for the Winter Excursion on Friday, December 12. You won’t want to miss this annual event and a great start to the winter season. Thank you to all who came out for Trunk or Treat. Our Trunk or Treat was a great success and the students had a wonderful time. Williams Elementary wishes everyone a safe winter season.

m I looking for a Preschool or a Daycare? What is the difference? How can my baby learn at such a young age? When can I start early education activities? These are questions often asked in the Early Childhood Education field, but answered easily after visiting The Little Cottage and learning the benefits of American Sign Language, music programs and sensorial activities geared towards children as young as 6 months of age. When opening The Learning Cottage LLC, Owners Aimee Muldoon and Ashley Cabe-Yerkovich, set themselves apart by creating an environment focused not only on the educational climate of today, but sustainability and child wellness. As they enter their second year in business and open The Little Cottage, a portion of their Early Learning campus geared specifically to children from 6 weeks of age to 2 years of age, they were sure to continue in developing an environment that would enrich and nurture young minds utilizing an American Sign Language program, early arts and sciences and the Music Together program in their daily activities. Benefits of Sign Language with your baby. Early exposure to signing with a baby assists in developing their language and reasoning skills. While other babies and toddlers will continue to yell to get what they want or need, signing babies are learning how to communicate simple words and phrases. Long-term benefits include larger speaking vocabulary, earlier reading skills and a closer bond. When you are able to better communicate with your baby and can understand each other, it creates the feeling of closeness. Studies report that emotional benefits include fewer moments of distress and parents report feeling better about themselves

and more confident about parenting. This closeness and communication benefit also creates an easy understanding and bond between baby and caregiver. Benefits of a musical experience with baby. From the pure pleasure of listening to soothing sounds and rhythmic harmonies, to gaining new language, math and social skills; whatever the setting, be it a quiet room at home, a large grassy field or a busy classroom, music can enliven and enrich the lives of children and the people who care for them. Infants recognize the melody of a song long before they can understand words. They often try to mimic sounds and move to the music, as they are physically able. The key to toddler music is the repetition of songs. They develop language skills by encouraging them to fill in a word at appropriate times and early math skills by reproducing rhythms while clapping their hands, feet or utilizing instruments. The Little Cottage, The Learning Cottage LLC, is proud to call themselves a Fusion Early Learning Preschool. Creating bonds, nurturing the hearts and minds of young child, utilizing green products, promoting a sustainable environment, welcoming cloth diapers and enriching children through numerous activities and learning opportunities daily. Aimee and Ashley are proud, on足 site owners and invite you to visit. For more information, please visit www.SarasotaLearningCottage.com.

e have been off to a great start this year and we want to say THANK YOU to all of the parents, teachers, staff members and kids who have made this school a success and a fun place to learn! In September, we kicked off the year with our annual coupon book. Everyone loves deals and it was apparent in the money that we raised from this fundraiser. Ms. McCollum’s class sold the most and Ms. Funderburk’s class turned in all of their books first so both classes received a classroom party. In October, we had our first Movie Night in conjunction with our General Meeting of the PTO. Neither the daylight nor the rain was an issue as we had it indoors in the multipurpose room. We had pizza and popcorn for sale and a great time was had by all! We will be having more of these as the year goes on. Fall Festival – November 1st 10:30am – 3:00pm. Our annual Fall Festival is right around the corner. This is always a fun event

irls Scouts of America have been empowering girls for over 100 years now. The first troop was established in March of 1912 and has grown to over 2 million girl members. They are recognized in over 92 countries and Girls Scouts of America are part of a worldwide family of 10 million girls and adults striving to teach diversity and increase girls’ awareness about the world. They have been empowering girls to build courage, confidence, and character. Girls discover the fun, friendship, and power they can possess through enriching experiences, such as field trips, sports skill-building clinics, community service projects, environmental stewardship, and many more exciting and fun activities. Girl Scouts are open to girls ages K-12 and women and men can join as adult leaders. Most girls join a local troop or group in their community for fun and friendships but soon realize that there are many more opportunities, for example building self-esteem and character while serving in the community. These are the core qualities of Girl Scouting. There are different troops for different grade levels from Daisy which is K-1 up to Ambassador which is Grades 11-12, and for seniors they can try for the Dr. Elinor Crawford Girl Scout Scholarship Fund. For guidelines visit

for everyone. We will have carnival games, face painting, Bobby the Balloon Man, a photo booth, ice cream, great food, vendor booths, a silent auction and more! Mark your calendars and join us for a great time! If you are interested in volunteering for this event, please contact the PTO or your child’s teacher. If you have time during the morning hours, we have our monthly volunteer coffee held on the 1st Thursday of the month. What a great way to get involved in school activities and meet other parents.
