Dear Readers, With thoughts about the aftermath of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Jose, and then the most deadly mass shooting ever in Las Vegas, my intent is to find and share with you the positive that we should hold onto when it all seems just too much. This is not an easy task when thinking about all of those families that lost loved ones, homes and a lifetime of amassed belongings. However, at some point in the chaos, destruction, death and despair, “good” always surfaces...ALWAYS! After the storms, neighbors began to actually talk to AND help their neighbors. People gave what they could to those who couldn’t get what they needed. People took others into their homes who had lost their own homes or had no power. So many companies and out of state people travelled days to come to our aid with generators and supplies. People sacrificed their lives to help others live. Our first responders were and are always our heroes, but so many ordinary people became heroes, too, even if they never knew where their donations ended up or who’s life they saved because they chose to do “good”. With the holidays upon us, let’s just take a minute and say thank you for what we have in our country, the United States of America, with our people that give so much. Let’s appreciate our health, our loved ones, our environment, our belongings and our neighbors. There is so much good in our lives even when the worst happens. Without adversity, we become complacent with our appreciation. The lessons our children take from us when bad things happen is how
“Being a GOOD person doesn’t depend on your religion, race, status, color, political views or culture. It depends on how you treat others.”
we can positively impact their future. Did we complain or take action? Did we reach out to those in need or just worry about ourselves? Did we do “good”? Did we involve our children in doing “good”? With that said, if you are able to volunteer, donate supplies or give monetarily, please involve your whole family and make it a point to help others in need this season. Harvest Drive is celebrating 25 years of doing “good” in our community by gathering and giving entire Thanksgiving meals, clothes and toys to hungry and needy families in Broward County. There are drop off sites at almost every school or they can send volunteers to pick up from your home if you cannot get to a site. They also need hands-on help now and all year long! Please read our Harvest Drive article in this issue to help the mission of doing good, call Renee Herman at (954) 444-5548 or visit their website at www.harvestdriveflorida.com. Wishing all of you a “good” holiday season and New Year, make it count! My best to you,
Margot Puleri

Dear Readers,
10
We have a lot to be thankful for this month. We are seeing the end of a devastating hurricane season, we honor our veterans for all they’ve done for us, and have the opportunity to take a moment to realize all that we are grateful for this Thanksgiving season. Hurricane Irma challenged not only our city but the entire state once it hit our shores. It is a lesson learned to always be prepared each hurricane season. I was witness to many people in our community stepping up to help in so many different ways, both during and after the storm. We should all be truly proud of our residents and city staff for their tireless efforts to ensure everyone was safe and needs were met. I also encourage everyone to sign up for the city’s CodeRed program. It is used to communicate emergency notifications to registered subscribers. There is no charge to register for or to use CodeRED, and personal information is kept confidential. Registering is quick and easy and can be done in or of two ways -- either sign up online at https://public.coderedweb.com/cne/en-US/C44FCAD73941 or utilize the CodeRed Mobile Alert app, a free public safety app for both Android and iPhone users. The CodeRed app delivers community and emergency alerts to individuals targeted with the impacted area, and allows you to receive timely notifications when you’re on the road and/or away from home. CodeRed delivers notifications by phone, email and/or text; and is compatible with TDD/ TTY devices for those who are deaf or hard of hearing. More information can be found on the city’s website at www.ppines.com. This year’s Veterans Day Observance will take place in a new location at the Memorial Park, located at 601 City Center Way by the Charles F. Dodge City Center. It will be held on Saturday, November 11, 2017 from noon to 2:00p.m. This is such a special day of observance. Each year more than 300 people attend the ceremony, where guest speakers from multiple U.S. Services, the Pembroke Pines Police and Fire Department Color Guard, scouts and the Pembroke Pines Charter School Band will be in attendance. Please also remember our Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. For the past 14 years, the Cart Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center Campus has joined together with schools, businesses and residents to gather donations for the Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. For 100 families in the Pembroke Pines community, assisted by these donations, this program makes this holiday time a very special time. The donations provide qualifying family with generously filled bins of nonperishable foods, turkeys and more to ensure a bountiful Thanksgiving meal. For more information, I encourage you to call the Center at (954) 450-6888. As always, please feel free to contact me at (954) 450-1020 or fortis@ppines.com.
Your Mayor,
Frank C. Ortis City of Pembroke Pines

n the fall of 1992, Renee Herman took it upon herself to organize a food drive at Country Isles Elementary that would provide a week’s worth of groceries to 20 Weston area families who were down on their luck. She rallied the students to help with neighborhood canned food drives and camped outside of Publix Supermarkets to accept donations. They succeeded and the 20 families in need were fed. But she didn’t stop there. Twenty-five years later, Renee is still on a mission to stamp out hunger and help families in need. Since the inaugural Harvest Drive, the number of families in need has grown and as a result, this grassroots organization has become a district wide partnership with the Broward County Public Schools. After many years of orchestrating the details of this annual event, Renée has been blessed with several special people to assist her in her efforts. Kim O’Neill, Susan Gross, Davi Leoniff, Jodi Samson and Amy Freund all volunteer to share the responsibilities. “It takes thousands of people to make this happen each year. Organizations such as the Rotary Clubs have been instrumental in helping with donations and money to buy groceries. Businesses like The Castle Group help with a tremendous amount of volunteers. Individuals including Alan Strauss, Michael Ramirez, Valerie Wanza, Jim Norton, Michael Freedland, Steve Goldstein, Robert Harms, Joe Marouf, among many others, have gone above and beyond to help our mission,” said Renee. Another distinctive characteristic of the program is the compassion and dedication displayed each year by students who participate.

“What really makes this work, what is truly unique about Harvest Drive, is that it is the students and the schools who donate their time and effort with such enthusiasm to make this a reality,” she says. Many of the students volunteer every year and she has formed a lasting bond with them throughout her time organizing the Harvest Drive. “Teaching children at a young age that their contributions can make a difference in the lives of others is what makes this project so rewarding,” Renee adds. Not only does this make the hard work and sacrifice pay off, it gives her hope for the future and inspires her to do even more. This year, over 200 public and private schools are involved in the mission to collect enough food to feed over 2,400 families throughout Broward County. Distribution sites will be set up at 15 local schools, with Western High School being the largest. In addition to these sites, approximately 189 other schools will be taking donations that will then be divided up between the area distribution sites. Families with children in Broward County Schools are referred to the Harvest Drive by Broward County social workers as well as other local social service agencies based
on their financial need. In addition to the week’s worth of groceries and Thanksgiving dinner, families are able to shop in the Harvest Drive’s makeshift stores for a variety of household items that have been donated. Volunteers work all year long collecting donations for the “Harvest Drive Boutiques” so that these families may find things they need at no cost to them. Western High and Pompano Beach High School will be fully stocked with items such as new and gently used toys, clothes and shoes, books and household items that many of us may take for granted are most in need by these families. “What keeps me awake at night worrying is that the day before the families arrive that week before Thanksgiving, we will be short. We need monetary donations and gift cards so we can buy the items we are short on at the last minute. I cannot bear the thought that our local, neighborhood families will go hungry when so many individuals, businesses and organizations have so much to give,” she said. Renee does not comprehend the word “no” when it comes to Harvest Drive. Her passion, persistence and work ethic will not allow her to accept “no.”
AROUND TOWN • Host a Neighborhood Food Drive to collect nonperishables and things from the list below. • Donate whatever amount of money (gift cards are encouraged as well) and non-perishable food you are able to give. • Feed the volunteers on Monday or Tuesday before Thanksgiving. • Donate toothbrushes, toothpaste, toiletries, clothes, books and toys. • Help sort and pack during Harvest Days at the different distribution sites. • Spread the word!

Unlike many other not for profit organizations, 100% goes to these families in need! No one gets paid to run this organization,” Renee says. “We need more help. Hunger is a year round challenge.” In addition to the Thanksgiving Harvest Drive, last year they made over 600 Helping Hands Harvest Drive boxes full of 40 lbs. of non-perishable food that were given out to families with children in our schools who are hungry. This year they are on track to surpass 1,200 boxes. Renee and her team would also like to thank the Jim Moran Foundation, Carolina Ale House, Children’s Services Council of Broward County, Whole Foods, Ultimate Software, Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Publix Charities, Florida Panthers and Memorial Healthcare System for their continued partnership.

he summer is over, but the risk that our children face by living in South Florida, surrounded by bodies of water, is abundant. We are so fortunate to live in a state with so many amazing lakes, ponds, bays, canals, and pools in our back yards, not to mention our vast ocean shoreline. But, are our children safe around them? Our South Florida lifestyle brings many opportunities for pool parties, boating, water parks and aquatic sports that we all want to enjoy. Besides the fun, the health and development benefits of swimming are unmatched, providing that everyone is confident and safe in and around the water. For the past four years in Pembroke Pines, AQUAMOTION SWIM SCHOOL has built its excellent reputation by instilling their students with a love and respect for the water in a fun and gentle environment. Aquamotion Swim School’s CEO, Adriana Vianna, brings 15 years of experience developing her students into safe and strong swimmers. The Aquamotion team of instructors are all Lifeguard & First Aid Certified. They are all trained to teach based on its own well-developed program, ensuring positive results for all ages.
There is no reason to wait for summer to begin learning to swim, because Aquamotion has an indoor heated pool maintaining a comfortable water temperature all year long, with no rain outs! This helps keep the consistency needed to achieve better results, and the salt chlorinated system is gentle on the eyes and skin. Parents, this school is a 2,100 square foot swimming facility with an indoor viewing room offering a clear view of everything being taught in the water and provides free Wi-Fi that caters to your busy lifestyle. Everyone is capable of learning how to swim, regardless of age, body type or level of fear and discomfort in the water. Aquamotion Swim School works with groups and individuals, from age 6 months through senior citizens, to become water safe so they can enjoy all the benefits of living around water in South Florida. Aquamotion Swim School is located at 10454 Taft Street, Pembroke Pines 33026. info@aquamotionus.com.

WORLD WAR II WOMEN VETERANS HONORED
On Saturday, October 7th, Capital Grille (Fort
Lauderdale) partnered with Honor Flight South Florida to honor 17 of our Nation’s Woman WWII Veterans. The event began with a full Police escort by Fort Lauderdale Police Department, as the ladies were dropped off to a red carpet entrance with over 80 grateful American’s who were cheering and waving American Flags to their arrival. The WWII Veterans were treated with Champagne and a 4 course meal prepared special for them, followed by
special guest speakers and given gifts from local business. They shared stories with the guest and some young Marine Cadets. It was truly a wonderful day for some of Nation’s most revered Women WWII Veterans. World War II Veterans are a dying breed, so Honor Flight South Florida is trying to honor them all by taking them on an Honor Flight. If you know a Veteran please nominate them for the Honor Flight. It’s free to all Veterans. Visit www.honorflightsouthflorida.org or call (855) 359-1838 for more information.

wo Pembroke Pines residents/students attended the World’s Perfect Pageant and Model Search this past August. With over 400 contestants from all over the World, they captured two of the coveted titles and crowns. The first crown went to Giana Gonzalez, 9 years old. She is the World’s Perfect Pre-Teen 2017-2018. Giana lives with her parents and sisters in Pembroke Pines and attends Somerset Academy. Hoping to be famous one day, she is a true performer. She is trained in 6 different dances and if that’s not enough, she recently has started singing and acting lessons. Madison Novo, 15, brought home the title of World’s Perfect Jr. Teen 2017-2018. Madison is a sophomore at Flanagan High School. She loves the runway but also loves to volunteer. She is known to have been born to Relay, where she has been part of the Pembroke Pines Relay for Life her entire life. Madison’s volunteering efforts were highlighted when she was named the recipient of Local 10 WPLG’s Heart of South Florida Award when was only 12 years old. Both girls met on the City of Pembroke Pines, Pines Day Stage and have been friends for a few years, they have helped each other with interview, clothes selections and just showing others good sportsmanship. Before winning the recent titles, they were both named January’s Perfect Jr. Teen and Pre-teen. They say practice makes perfect. Madison took on the role of Giana’s pageant coach. Making her proud at the event, Giana also received awards for the Best Interview, Best Summer Wear and Best Gown. Giana spent time
helping Madison too, while designing the perfect gown. Madison received the award for Best Gown. Their national titles gave them an opportunity to walk another RUNWAY in New York this September. Both queens were part of New York Fashion Week Pageantry 2.0 presented by Art & Beauty Magazine. Giana walked for Jegie Carrera, Kiarra Morrow (Kicomo) and Michael Galanes (Wow Wear) and Madison walked for Jegie Carrera, Michael Galanes (Wow Wear) and Katie Nordhoff (Katie Cakes Swimwear). Both of them kept busy with roof top photo shoots, Time Square photo shoot and eating pizza at the San Gennaro Festival in Little Italy. They are also scheduled to make an appearance at the National Televised Citrus Bowl Parade in late December. In addition to Giana and Madison, the World’s Perfect Court is made up of an amazing group: World’s Perfect Classic Woman-Kasha Grimes, World’s Perfect Woman-Angela Haseman, World’s Perfect Miss-Katie Nordhoff, World’s Perfect TeenTahira Gilyard, and World’s Perfect Man-Abdulla Kudrath, Michael Galanes and Frank Arcidiacono are the creators of the World’s Perfect Pageant and Model Search combining Fashion and Pageantry to create the perfect runway. Giana and Madison will make appearances throughout the year, and although their titles will take them on many different runways throughout the United States, Pembroke Pines will always be Home...Sweet Home, reminding everyone the best friendship is the one made in Pembroke Pines.

atching movies, playing board games, gathering for dinner, going to the beach are all fun activities that families enjoy together. The David Posnack Jewish Community Center is adding another component to that mix — fitness fun for the whole family — parents, kids, teens, grandma and grandpa too on the center’s 40-acre campus. Fitness and nutrition experts say living a healthy lifestyle should start at an early age. “Regular exercise and physical activity need to be part of that,” says Ralph Ramirez, director of fitness at the Posnack JCC. “Getting and staying fit is not just walking on a treadmill or lifting weights. It’s about movement, maintaining muscle tone and bone health, controlling weight gain and having fun.” The JCC continuously updates its workout classes and fitness equipment to stave off boredom. Parents may work out in the JCC’s state-of-the-art fitness center and bring their teens to join them. JCC floor staff is available to help the teens learn the proper and safe way to use the equipment. Then the family can cool off, splash around or swim laps in the J’s climate-controlled, competitionsized swimming pool. Mom or dad into yoga? The JCC has yoga and hot yoga classes for adults. Children, ages 3 and up, may get into yoga too, in classes divided by age groups that feature stretching, poses and meditation. The center also offers KidsFit classes for ages 6-10 with the J’s ProfessorFit (also known as Ysaac Kaplan), a certified personal trainer and fitness instructor, who teaches the kids the basics of fitness, how to exercise on treadmills and rowers and runs them through an obstacle course. Popular with adults is the JCC’s new XZone® fitness interval training classes. Pre-teens and teens can sign up for the comparable XPress Zone — interval training that builds strength and endurance, burns calories and fat and utilizes treadmills, rowing machines and Spin bikes during a supervised 50-minute workout. If sports are your exercise of choice, the JCC provides that too. The center has basketball leagues for adults, teens and children. If some instruction is needed first, the JHoops Basketball Academy delivers a terrific introduction. At the Academy children learn the basics of the game and the concept of teamwork and improve their skills in a friendly, non-competitive, fun environment in air-conditioned gymnasiums. During open-court time, dad, mom and the kids may practice shooting hoops. Boxing and soccer are the newest youth sports offered this fall. The boxing class focuses on training with 80 pound bags, teaching basic boxing techniques and sparing with a trainer. “Exercise and physical activity take many forms,” says Kaplan. The JCC offers numerous varieties: from hip-hop dance, to ballet, jazz and tap classes for ages 2 and up, to ballroom dancing, to gymnastics and tumbling, to martial arts classes for preschoolers through adults, to SilverSneakers, SilverSplash and SilverFit exercise classes for seniors. “But most important,” Kaplan says, “find activities that the family enjoys. That will inspire them to keep their bodies moving and stick with the program.” The Posnack JCC is located at 5850 S. Pine Island Road in Davie. For information call 954-434-0499, ext. 100.

or the past 12 years, Bright & Smart has been preparing children in South Florida for a technological future through instruction and hands-on engineering projects. Through field trips, afterschool programs, and camps, Bright & Smart brings the tools and technology to the students and teaches them the engineering skills to code and build their creations. From step one to completed project, they can work individually or in teams and learn every aspect while having fun! This year, Bright & Smart has launched an exciting new educational program called Class in a Box that kids can do at home! Class in a Box offers three complete hands-on engineering kits designed for children ages 5 and up. In conjunction with the S.T.E.A.M. curriculum (science, technology, engineering, art, mathematics) kids are able to follow along with video and written instructions to master the lessons. Class in a Box #1 teaches the Basics of 3D Printing, 3D Rendering and 3D Design. The kit includes: building blocks, paper, pencil, and a Bright & Smart USB stick with 3D Design Software. This lesson is engineered to make your child a 3D wiz in just a few hours. Once you learn how to use the software, you will be able to create anything you can imagine. With the included password you will be able to order a 3D print of your design. Only $24.95. Class in a Box #2 teaches kids to build a real Fidget Spinner to use for fun while learning the basics of physics and the laws of motion in a few hours. The Fidget Spinner kit includes: building blocks to build your own spinner, paper, pencil, and the full lesson book with link to video instruction. Once you finish this class, you can always check out the Class In a Box #1 Basics of 3D Printing & Design which will teach you how to 3D Design and 3D Print your own fidget spinner. Only $5.95. Class in a Box #3 teaches the basic skills of Arduino-like boards, microprocessors, and microcontrollers and how to program them to build your very own robot. No soldering, hot elements, or power tools needed! Included in the box
is a lesson manual with link to video instruction, Bright & Smart original designed and manufactured robot parts, Arduino-like board, and pieces to integrate your robot to building blocks! Once you finish this class, you can always check out the Class In a Box #1 Basics of 3D Printing & Design which will teach you how to 3D Design and 3D Print. Products and Bright & Smart merchandise are also available on Amazon.com. Parents, these are the next generation gifts for your child or children in your lives. It is simply the most fun and educationally rewarding way to introduce children to engineering, 3D Coding and Design, and physics while building abstract thinking and logic, as well as conceptualization. Just as you would introduce your child to sports or activities that may spark a passion they would like to pursue, the same follows for introducing your child to engineering and robotics. Tap into and unleash their natural abilities and watch them flourish in science and technology. Bright & Smart’s Founder and Managing Director, Lucy Tamez, holds a B.S. in Physics Engineering and has dedicated her professional life to physics education. Lucy has devoted her time to research, data gathering, software-licenses procurement, curriculum structure, modeling and field-testing of all materials, techniques, and tools for the portfolios that now make up their courses. This includes materials from the MIT Media Lab, Carnegie Mellon Robotics Institute, Tufts Center for Engineering, Education, and Outreach. Ongoing afterschool programs, in house field trips and camps may be found all over southeast Florida. Ask them about an introductory class near you!

education alumnae Maria Arbiol and Jennifer Canals-Diaz are leading donation drives to help victims of Hurricane Irma in South Florida and the Caribbean. As undergrads, both were natural leaders, presidents of Delta Phi Epsilon Sorority and Alpha Xi Delta Sorority in 2002, and involved in various aspects of campus life at FIU. Today, as mothers and educators Maria Arbiol (Everglades Center K-8) and Diaz (Pembroke Pines Charter School), they are teaching their students and children a lesson of compassion in Irma’s aftermath. “When my power came back, my house was picked up and my boys went back to sleeping in their beds,” Arbiol said. “I read about my community, watched the stories on the news. Even though my surroundings were ok, outside of my four walls, things were not. We needed to do something.” Representing the local Alumnae Association of her sorority, Arbiol spearheaded a donation drive for the Tamiami shelter that housed 1,500 Monroe County evacuees. Arbiol contacted the Red Cross to find out what the most pressing needs were for people staying at the shelter. Their list included zip lock bags, towels, socks and clothing so Arbiol took the monetary donations she collected and went shopping for the evacuees. On September 15, she along with her two sons delivered the donations to the shelter. Arbiol is grateful for

year by celebrating our success! Broward Schools Superintendent, Robert Runcie, recently visited during his “Celebrating Excellence” tour. The tour took him to thirteen public schools in Broward that improved two letter grades on the State’s Accountability system. While visiting Pines Lakes, Mr. Runcie commended the entire school community for the hard work, which resulted in a school grade of “B” for the 2016-2017 school year.
everyone who dropped off items, donated money and coordinated pick-ups across South Florida. But for her, it doesn’t stop there. Her Facebook page has become a bulletin board of posts with volunteer and donation opportunities all over the state. Canals-Diaz earned her Social Studies Education degree and Master’s in Education Leadership from FIU. An Assistant Principal for Pembroke Pines Charter School, she could not make the trip down to Miami-Dade for the donations Arbiol was collecting. Instead, she mobilized her friends and students to collect donations that would be sent abroad to St. Thomas, St. Maarten and Barbuda, all of which were severely impacted by Hurricane Irma. Nine pallets of supplies have already been sent. “I’ve always enjoyed helping others,” Canals-Diaz said. “I was involved in a sorority at FIU and was always big about community service. At Pembroke Pines Charter School, our team is always finding ways to encourage our students to become active participants in their global community and we are always pushing them to assist.” Pembroke Pines Charter School - Academic Village is located at 17195 Sheridan Street, Pembroke Pines 33331. he world has gotten just a little bit smaller at Silver Trail Middle School. Students are participating in what, in essence, is a ‘new millennium Pen Pal system.’ They are part of the Global Scholars Project developed by Bloomberg Philanthropies in New York. The Global Scholars Project provides students with the unique opportunity of researching, communicating and collaborating with peers around the world. Silver Trail Middle School first adopted the Global Scholars Program as a part of their Innovative Program Designation in the 2016-2017 school year. The curriculum was presented as a part of the Pre-Advanced Placement course offered to advanced students in grades six, seven, and eight. As the Broward School District moved toward “re-imagining” the middle school model, Silver Trail became ready to meet the needs of those same high-achieving students with several highly rigorous academic electives offered as part of the 2017-2018 school year. The Global Scholars elective focuses heavily on project-based learning, incorporating technology and making global connections through research. Each year the program focuses on a different theme connected to a global concern. Last year, students studied the use of technology around the world and its impact on communication and environmental sustainability. This year’s theme is devoted to

food and nutrition with specific lessons surrounding food sustainability, food waste and the impact of food choices on nutrition. S tudents are provided with a rich curriculum, challenging them to investigate and research societal problems, both locally and globally, and to design innovative solutions. Using an online e-classroom, students here in Florida share their discoveries and ideas with students across the globe in cities like Taipei, Warsaw, and Barcelona. Ultimately, the Global Scholars Program fully immerses students into the study of people around the world. As part of their Innovative Program design, students in the sixth grade explore the idea of being a part of their local community. The seventh graders focus on their roles as national citizens, and the eighth graders focus on global concerns. Through the Global Scholars Program, Silver Trail Middle students take that study to a whole new level. This year, the students have already designed action plans for projects to collect donations for victims of hurricanes Irma, Harvey, and Maria. Students are finding out first-hand what a difference they can make. Silver Trail Middle School is located at 18300 Sheridan Street, Pembroke Pines 33331. pple Tree Montessori opened in 1978 with one classroom of 20 students. It grew to two schools with 70 students and now has a single facility in
66
Southwest Broward County serving close to 200 students ages 2 through 8th grade. This facility is state-of-the-art, especially built for Montessori. Now under new ownership, Ms. Elizabeth Gonzalez has brought her vast experience and passion for academic excellence to Apple Tree Montessori. Ms. Elizabeth is the owner of A World of Knowledge in Pembroke Pines, recognized as one of the top 5 early learning centers in Florida, and is the founder of Green Tree Preparatory Charter School, ranked #22 out of 514 charter schools in Florida. Rest-assured, the Apple Tree philosophy has and will remain the same, “Every child given freedom and a spark of learning enthusiasm will explore and excel in all academic areas”. Apple Tree Montessori is one of the only true Montessori schools in South Florida. Each teacher is Montessori trained, and the curriculum and classrooms are designed for a hands-on approach to learning. Each classroom is uniquely suited to the needs of its students. Preschool rooms feature low sinks, chairs, and tables; a reading corner with a small couch (or comfy floor cushions); reachable shelves; and child-sized kitchen tools—elements that allow independence and help develop small motor skills. Montessori’s distinctive learning materials are displayed on open, easily accessible shelves. They are arranged (left to right, as we read in Western languages) in order of their sequence in the curriculum, from the simplest to the most complex. In upper-level classrooms you’re likely to see large tables for group work, computers, interactive whiteboards, and areas for science labs. Above all, each classroom is warm, well-organized, and inviting, with couches, rugs, and flowers to help children and youth feel calm and at home. Given the freedom and support to question, to probe deeply, and to make connections, Montessori students become confident, enthusiastic, self-directed learners. They are able to think critically, work collaboratively, and act boldly—a skill set for the 21st century. They also develop a sense of order, coordination, concentration and independence with a respect for their environment and community. Eighteen years ago, my own child went to Apple Tree Montessori for preschool. Although my intentions were simply to place her in a safe and nurturing learning
environment, I was continually astounded by the exceptional academic growth and strides in her independence. In a very short time, she was speaking and understanding two foreign languages, she knew her continents by sight on a map, and her fine motor skills gave her a fast-tracked independence. She was able to pour her own milk without spilling, she could steadily measure ingredients in the kitchen and was able to dress herself with zippers, buttons and laces. All this and she had mastered her colors, shapes and letters while developing a solid foundation in math, writing and reading! Montessori based learning may not be for every child, but my child excelled in this environment with the freedom to learn at her own pace. You will be delighted with the Apple Tree campus. Ms. Gonzalez has given a face lift to the school this summer. The entire facility has been pressure cleaned, classrooms have been painted, new furniture and materials have been purchased. New awnings surround and protect the buildings, the entire portable received a complete face life with new carpets, boards and cabinetry, and new playground material has been added to the preschool. The library has been reorganized and new equipment has been added to accommodate the new Library/Media Center. Apple Tree also now has a new middle school laboratory and will continue to obtain materials for its STEM program. Apple Tree Montessori accepts students that have the desire to learn, the ability to concentrate and who display self-control. Students must demonstrate average to superior learning abilities and show a promise of benefiting from the Montessori program and philosophy. Students are admitted to all grades as openings permit. Apple Tree Montessori invites you and your family to schedule a tour of the facility. Personalized tours allow them to provide you with a first-hand experience of their school in action while focusing their time and attention to answering your specific questions and concerns.

ig things are happening this year at Chapel Trail Elementary School. The Accelerated Reader (AR) program kicked off the second week of school and students are rising to the challenge while trying to meet their AR goals. In order to give equal opportunity for all students to participate in the program, dedicated teachers volunteer during their planning time to open the computer lab for students to take their AR tests to earn their points. This motivational reading program truly challenges students to read nightly. At the end of the school year, children will be rewarded with certificates, ribbons, medals, or trophies when they have achieved specific grade level goals. The PTA at Chapel Trail generously supports this program through the purchase of licenses and awards at the end of the school year. As a result, the students earned a grand total of 51,083 points during the 2016-2017 school year. Go Gators! Academics are important, but so is the social and emotional growth of their students. At Chapel Trail, we strive to develop well rounded students with a commitment to demonstrating acts of kindness. When Texas was hit with Hurricane Harvey, they worked with their partner, Sawgrass Recreational Park, to collect donations for the victims. When Sawgrass Recreational Park asked for donations, our students, parents, and faculty drove the supplies to the park. The employees at Sawgrass Recreational Park personally drove

the supplies to Texas. Many of their employees stayed to assist with clean up and rescue. Many thanks go out to Sawgrass Recreational Park for demonstrating to the students what it means to be selfless, thoughtful, and caring citizens. The opportunity to show kindness to others continued this past month when the students, parents, and staff at Chapel Trail Elementary reached out to help the hurricane victims in the US Virgin Islands. Flyers were sent home asking for donations. Each morning, parents, students, and faculty members dropped off generous donations of food, household items, toiletries, clothing, and medical supplies. Parent volunteers at the school helped to organize, sort, and pack the items for delivery. The collection efforts were coordinated with a related drive in North Miami called, “US Virgin Islands Hurricane Restoration.” The culminating drive was held at Bruno’s Bakery and Restaurant on September 24th. It is the hope of the community of Chapel Trail Elementary School that these donations will help provide comfort to the victims of the hurricane. The school year has just begun, but the students at Chapel Trail Elementary are already learning important lessons in academics and kindness! hoose Peace/Stop Violence is an initiative led by Broward County Public Schools, United Way and the Children Services Council to build community-wide efforts to educate, engage, inspire, and empower youth to take action and bring about positive change for the purpose of preventing youth crime and violence, and creating safe, healthy and thriving environments for children and families. Flanagan High School and the Peer Counseling program have partnered with our local Starbucks to create “Coffee Cup Sleeves for Peace”. Students decorated the sleeves with positive messages, images, and phrases to be handed out to Starbucks customers the week of September 22-29. The 15th Annual Falcon Sound Invitational happened on for October 7, 2017 at Flanagan High School. This year was the 15th year Flanagan hosted a marching band festival. Approximately 30 bands competed in 5 classifications. Judges backgrounds include BOA, DCI, WGI, FBA, FMBC, FFCC training and adjudicating. Overall, Flanagan High placed 3rd in the competition, just over one point behind Park Vista High School and Stoneman Douglas High School. A
s West Broward High School (WBHS) approaches its tenth year anniversary, it became evident that the school has undergone overwhelming change. Starting from nothing more than a few programs, passionate administrators, faculty, teachers, and students, the school has cemented itself and become recognized at national, state, and local levels for its’ success. The Bobcat Speech & Debate Team is certainly no exception. Beginning as two class periods with approximately 50 students, WBHS’ debate team has grown exponentially, and continues to attract and inspire more students every year with their ongoing success. “We’ve almost quadrupled in size, we’re the third fastest growing team in the State of Florida, we went from unranked to second in the county and second in the state, it’s just so drastic the change that the team has been through.” Speech and Debate Advisor Mrs. Diane Harrison said. With their hard work and dedication, the team has not only grown in numbers, but has also gained more success and recognition than ever before. During the 2016-2017 school year three debate team members took the team to a new level; then juniors Isabel McCann, Preston Galban, and Rock Navamuel, became the first WBHS students to ever qualify for nationals. Through these accolades, students have been inspired to join debate, as it gives students a platform to showcase their talent. “We have definitely gotten more organized and more competitive. When we first started the program, it was Ms. Harrison’s first year,” senior Alexandra Benedit said. “It was a tough situation and we were all working together, but now we have a much

greater sense of how to compete at a high level.” Most recently, West Broward’s debate team participated in their first local tournament of the Catholic Forensic League (CFL) at Fort Lauderdale High School. In this tournament, senior Isabel McCann was able to take home second place in the informative category, and Benedit won fourth place in dramatic performance. In comparison to last year, the team feels that they are better prepared going into meets and are looking forward to a successful year. “When it comes to going to tournaments, we are definitely more prepared,” senior Alyssa Biggs said. “We have had a lot more practices this year, and we have had a better turnout, so a lot of students already know what to expect when competition comes around.” After just their first tournament of the year, the team already has high expectations for the 2017-2018 Speech and Debate season, and even higher ones for the years to come. As they prepare for their first national tournament in October, the team is aiming toward a more successful year than last, as the seniors who have been with the team since it’s start look to carry on their legacies at West Broward Speech and Debate. “I believe that the team will continue to grow and succeed” Harrison said, “because these are the students I had during my first year of the program, I know they’re going to leave a strong legacy.” West Broward High School is located at 500 NW 209th Avenue, Pembroke Pines 33029. HUNTINGTON LEARNING CENTER 4 Ways to Improve Study Time
I
t takes effort and persistence to be a good student, and the hardest part for many is learning and consistently embracing good study habits. The investment is worth it, however. Students who learn the tools to study smart as younger students will be well equipped to handle the increased workload for multiple classes in high school. To be most effective, study time should be efficient, focused and organized. If your child’s study sessions could be better, here are four tips to help: Study with a plan. Studying without a plan can easily lead to procrastination and wasted time. Your child should get into the habit of planning out what to study and for how long every single day. A planner will come in very useful here—have your child use it to record daily homework assignments, upcoming test and project dates, and other obligations (such as extracurricular activities). At the start of homework time each day, your child should review assignments due the next day and look ahead at the rest of the week for any upcoming project deadlines, quizzes or exams. Your child can then prioritize all tasks and dive in. Get “in the zone.” Studying when the heart is only halfway in it isn’t as effective as studying when focused and ready to work. You can help your child by talking about when he or she feels the most alert and motivated and planning to study at that time whenever possible. Without question, there will be times when your child just isn’t feeling it. The key is to get into the studying mindset prior to starting on a pre-defined list of priorities and minimize any distractions. A concentrated 30-minute study session is much better than one hour of partly distracted, unenthusiastic work.
Stop to self-check often. It’s a fact that regular summarizing and self-testing is one of the best ways to help solidify knowledge. Encourage your child to preview the text before reading, jot down main points while reading, and stop every few pages to summarize. If it’s a problem-solving subject like math, have him or her do any practice problems or self-check quizzes in the text or workbook along the way, too. Aim for consistency. Regular studying of a topic helps it “stick” making those exam study sessions much easier and less stressful. It’s always a good idea for middle and high school students to spend time each evening reviewing any class notes, even if just for a few minutes. A student who spends 20 minutes each day on homework AND reading and reviewing concepts covered in class will be far better prepared than the one who does homework only, but pulls an all-nighter study session the night before a test. When it comes to learning, the way your child studies is equally (if not more) as important as how often he or she studies. If your child seems to struggle with getting started or you notice that his or her time or effort is not translating into positive results, call Huntington. We’ll work with your child to develop good habits that ensure study time always results in learning. Learn more at www.HuntingtonHelps.com.
