JP Taravella’s Kids of Love Chapter:
I
Giving Back
t is never pleasant to see someone suffering, but watching a child fight against cancer is heartbreaking. The Kids of Love Organization works daily to assist the families of these children in many ways. At JP Taravella, the Kids of Love members visited a local hospital delivering gas and food gift cards to over twenty families in need. The feeling of letting these families know that they are thought about daily is the reason why this chapter of the Kids of Love exists. The President, Jen Gaver, along with
Gal Mashash and Daniela Bermudez are pictured below delivering the gifts to children in the hospital. These hospital deliveries are important to everyone involved. It is not just about delivering money and gifts, it is about letting these children know that people care and support them. Organizations like this put smiles on the faces of people in need. Taravella’s Kids of Love Chapter has many more visits planned to continue their philanthropic assistance in our local community.

T
here aren’t any words to ease the pain of losing a loved one to suicide. Survivors have expressed being left with such a profound range of emotions from helplessness to denial and from guilt to rage. Survivors seek answers that they may never get, therefore coming to terms with living with this grief requires much time and support. There is never closure, just acceptance. The Florida Initiative for Suicide Prevention (FISP), located in Weston, is not only providing support for survivors, but they are finding ways to spread the word that there is HOPE for those who may be experiencing feelings of hopelessness. The FISP is reaching out to students, teachers and parents to help reduce the increasing number of suicides and attempted suicides in our youth population through H.O.P.E. Clubs (Helping Overcome Problems Effectively) in our schools. Currently FISP has nine high school and two middle school HOPE Clubs meeting weekly in Broward County. The HOPE Club helps teens plan programs in their school to “foster empathy, self-worth, feelings of belonging and good citizenship skills.” One of the programs held in the schools is called Hugs For HOPE. This organized event brings awareness to the destructiveness of bullying and illustrates the warning signs of those at risk. Hugs candies are distributed to let their student body know that others care and HOPE will be there for them. In May, the FISP and HOPE Clubs hosted the Hugs for Hope 5K Run/Walk at Markham Park in Sunrise. Hundreds came out to support the cause and raise needed funds to make an impact in their schools. As your middle School, high school or college age children are looking for a way to get involved in their schools, what better way that joining or starting a HOPE Club? HERE ARE A FEW ALARMING STATISTICS: According to FISP, suicide is now the 9th leading cause of death in Florida and suicide takes the lives of more than 41,000 Americans each year! There is an attempted
suicide every 32 seconds in the United States. If every HOPE Club could help just one person in their school, imagine the impact. For those whose loved one could not find their way past the hopelessness soon enough, FISP has over six Healing Support Groups that meet twice monthly in the tri-county area. The meetings are free, however they ask that you call prior to attending. In the words of a dear friend who lost her brother to suicide, “I just want something good to come from my brother’s death, that’s why we put a team together in his name and participated in the Hugs for Hope Walk.” While most words cannot bring comfort to survivors, the act of spreading words of HOPE and doing something to honor his life brings great comfort to her and her family. Suicide Task Force Prevention meeting will be held on Sept 8 from 5:30 to 7 at the law offices of Scott J. Brook P.A. 2855 N. University Drive, Suite #510 Coral Springs, FL 33065. IS MY CHILD ADDICTED TO SCREENS, VIDEO GAMES AND SOCIAL MEDIA? R
ecently, our office has been bombarded by parents calling to have their children treated for a video game addiction. One parent reported that her preadolescent son was playing at least 8 hours per day, often sneaking out of bed in an attempt to access the games and then playing through the night. Another father shared that his son had stolen his credit card to purchase hundreds of dollars of virtual products for his game. Although parents tell us they have attempted to restrict gaming time, often the children and adolescents have found creative ways to sneak gaming or have resorted to using aggression and threats in order to maintain game play. Currently, internet gaming disorder is not a diagnosable condition. Researchers have argued for the inclusion of Internet Addiction. They describe this condition as 1) excessive use, 2) withdrawal when the computer is inaccessible, 3) the need for more hours of use, and 4) negative consequences (e.g., lying, stealing, social isolation, etc.) (DSM-V, Block, 2008). In 2013 the American Academy of Pediatrics cited shocking statistics from a 2010 Kaiser Family Foundation study: “The average 8- to 10-year-old spends nearly eight hours a day with a variety of different media, and older children and teenagers spend more than 11 hours per day.” The Academy recommends that older children and teenagers should spend two hours or less per day with entertainment media. They continue to recommend that it is preferable to spend their free time playing outdoors, reading, doing hobbies and exercising their imagination. They
concluded that heavy use of electronic media can have significant negative effects on children’s behavior, health and school performance. Brody, J. (2015, July 6). Screen Addiction Is Taking A Toll On Children. The New York Times. How do you know if your child has a problem? If your child or adolescent’s gaming or internet use is significantly impairing academic, social, or occupational functioning, your child should be evaluated by a mental health professional with experience in this area. This evaluation can help to identify the function of the internet/gaming behavior, and can provide you and your family with a plan to correct and manage the behavior. For example, what function does the gaming serve for the child? The child may be experiencing social anxiety, and is using the game to avoid social interactions or relationships. He or she may also be trying to avoid responsibilities, such as homework due to learning difficulties. Sometimes, obsessive video game playing may represent a restricted interest that is part of an autism spectrum disorder. If warranted, a full psychological evaluation can help your family to better understand your child’s gaming. Our office has become increasingly familiar with this growing problem. The first step in helping your child is to be aware of the problem. If you are reading this it is likely that you have concerns, difficulties or interest in the area of gaming addition. If we can help, please do not hesitate to reach out. I invite you to reach out to me for future article suggestions. Please email me at DrYudell@DrYudell.com.

chool days are almost upon us. Parents and students are pouring over the lists of supplies their children need. You’re reading the list and they need: books, binders, lunch box, paper, pencils, glue sticks, backpacks and possibly musical instruments. As these items are purchased, the two of you see how much of this “stuff” you can shove into that backpack? Isn’t that right? No, let’s rethink this. What “stuff” is really necessary to carry? The least amount of “stuff” is better. There’s a good reason for this. It’s your child’s health. Too much weight in a backpack is a hazard to still-forming bones and muscles. Heavy backpacks cause fatigue, chronic back pain, neck strain, and possibly nerve damage. When a backpack is over-filled, it pulls the child backwards and to compensate the child bends forward. This poor posture can cause the vertebrae to pinch nerves and cause pain. An overfilled backpack can also throw a child off balance on a staircase. Backpacks are great when they are used properly. Select a backpack for your child that is no bigger than necessary for their supplies. The pack should have wide padded adjustable straps. (Narrow straps can cause nerve damage) The shoulder straps should be no lower than 4 inches below the waist. Tell your child to never carry the backpack on one shoulder. The support of the weight should be spread across the stronger muscles of the back. The heavier items in the backpack should rest closest to the child’s back. Kids
should carry no more than 10% to 15% of their body weight in their backpack. Weigh your child’s backpack, and inform them when they are carrying too much weight on their back. Another way to help keep the weight down is to go over organizational skills with your child. Let them know they do not need to bring all books to all classes. At the end of the day, they only need to bring books home that are needed for homework. At other times, the books should remain in the locker or the assigned spot the student has been given to store their items. Find out if your student’s textbooks are online. Many schools have already gone to e-textbooks or iPads. President Obama has stated that he hopes to have students using mostly e-textbooks by 2017. They are easier to keep up-dated and in the long-run, more economical. However, this is a controversial position at the present time. As a mother and a chiropractor, I feel the importance of getting this information to every parent. Many back and neck problems can be prevented if we pay attention when our kids are young and their bones are still forming. I welcome you, or you and your child, to come to my office for a complimentary consultation, exam, and scoliosis screening. If you have a concern or problem and an x-ray is indicated, a digital x- ray can be taken at my office and it will also be reviewed by a radiologist. The x-ray and the report will be done at a discounted fee of $45.00.
THE PATIENT AND ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT OR BE REIMBURSED FOR PAYMENT FOR ANY OTHER SERVICE, EXAMINATION OR TREATMENT WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR THE FREE, DISCOUNTED OR REDUCED FEE SERVICES, EXAMINATION OR TREATMENT.

IMACS BRINGS FUN TO THE EQUATION I
magine your child in an environment where he learns how to break down a complex problem and solve it effortlessly. Imagine your child being the first to raise her hand when she figures out the answer. Imagine that your elementary age child showed you how he writes computer code and program robots. Is that possible? Absolutely! Let’s be honest, children typically learn math through the “Drill It & Kill It” method. They may learn it for a test through repetition and perhaps memorization, but never really learn how to solve problems or apply the lessons to other subjects. IMACS brings a proven, fun curriculum to mathematics and computer sciences. Whatever you feel your child’s strengths or weaknesses are in school, you’ve got to see it to believe it! If your child is not planning on pursuing a so-called S.T.E.M. career (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics), does she really need to be good at math? Yes, but not just for the often-stated reason that people encounter math regularly throughout their lives. Being able to handle everyday math is certainly important. For example: When comparing various financial aid packages by different universities, which one makes the most sense for your family? When deciding between leasing or buying a car, which is the best deal in the long run? While no one doubts that being better at money arithmetic would benefit individuals and society as a whole, such specific situations require a narrow skill set. The benefits of being good at math, however, go beyond correctly computing the tip at dinner to a wide array of circumstances that call for abilities prized in virtually every field of employment. For example, people who have learned to think mathematically are better at understanding the structure required to complete a given task. The first step in solving any math problem is sizing up the situation. What do you already know? What information is missing? Can you break the larger problem into more manageable pieces? Having both the skills and confidence to dissect complex problems, including ones that look nothing like what you’ve seen before, is one of the main benefits of becoming good at math. People who have learned to think mathematically are also better at assimilating new ideas. Once you’ve assessed the situation, broken down the problem, and gathered the necessary pieces, how do you put it all together to get from where you are to where you want to be? When faced with a novel situation, can you devise an approach where there
By Natasha Chen
wasn’t one before? If your child has studied mathematics in a way that pushes him to think both logically and creatively, then he will be much better prepared to handle an ever-changing variety of circumstances that call for these skills, no matter what career he chooses. How can you as a parent help your child become good at math? If you have very young children, work on building their numeracy skills. Get down on the floor with some blocks to show them what “more” and “less” and different numbers actually mean. Make patterns out of age-safe household items such as colored socks or whole fruits and vegetables. When children are around five or six years old, adding and exchanging coins is another fun activity. As your kids get older, make sure they are exposed to mathematics in an environment that is both challenging and engaging, especially if they are coasting through school math. When they find themselves outperforming their peers in college, you will be happy that you encouraged them to become genuinely good at math from an early age. Give your child the gift of confidence that comes with knowledge, understanding and accomplishment in problem solving. IMACS’ youngest students learn to solve college level math problems and perform advanced computer programming before they reach middle school. IMACS’ older students are accepted to many of the best technology institutes and universities in the country. It’s a gift that will last a lifetime and translates to every subject and every career. To attend a FREE class with your child, call 954.791.2333 or visit imacs.org. Natasha Chen is Communications Director for the Institute for Mathematics and Computer Science (IMACS), a South Florida-based educational institution offering after-school, weekend, summer and homeschool enrichment classes.

tarting in August 2015, the nationally ranked College Academy @ Broward College is expanding to Broward College’s North Campus located in Coconut Creek, Florida. The College Academy @ BC offers eligible high school students the outstanding opportunity to simultaneously earn their high school diploma and an Associate in Arts degree. This successful partnership between The School Board of Broward County and Broward College was established in 2001 as a full-time, dual enrollment high school. This additional location for the College Academy meets the increasing demand for higher education options for high school students in the north end of Broward County. The College Academy at Broward College’s North Campus now affords those families a rare opportunity to accelerate their children’s toward the completion of a college degree at little to no cost. At Broward College’s North Campus College Academy students will find themselves immersed in a vibrant community of learners supported by nationally recognized faculty and staff. In fact, in May of 2015, two North Campus graduates were awarded the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke scholarship which awarded each student up to $40, 000 to continue their college education.
Often described as a ‘living laboratory’, Broward College’s North Campus has a curriculum designed for the 21st century learning experiences well beyond the walls of the traditional classroom including high-demand programs in health sciences, engineering technology, teacher education and computer science. Home to the Dr. Peggy Green Sustainability Institute, the North Campus is alive with native plants and species that are incorporated into the science curriculum. The lake on campus is also an opportune locale for the study of hydrology and ecology in the local environment with an emphasis on conservation and preservation. Outside of class experiences, students of the North Campus College Academy will enjoy access to a state-of-the-art Academic Success Center conveniently located within the North Regional Broward College Library. And, many students participate in any number of dynamic student life organizations and activities on the campus. For more information on the College Academy @ Broward College, please contact Principal Deborah Davey at 754-321-6900 and deborah.davey@ browardschools.com and visit the College Academy @ Broward College website at collegeacademy.browardschools.com.

he summer fun has ended and we are ready for another exciting year. We hope all of our families were able to spend some quality time with their children either traveling, going to the park, swimming, playing games or cuddling up and reading a great book. However you spent your time off, we are glad you are back with us here at Parkside, ready to kick off a great year. Parkside’s theme for the 2015-16 school year will be “Mapping the B.E.S.T. Path to Success.” This year’s theme will encompass a journey of learning through the geography of our wonderful United States of America while focusing on the B.E.S.T. (beyond expected student targets) map to achieving success. A culmination of all of our projects and learning takes place in May at our school-wide exhibition We are very excited to share that our S.M.A.R.T. dollars have been put into motion here at Parkside. Due to the S.M.A.R.T. bond initiative that passed back in November, we received $128,000 to update and expand the technology in our classrooms. Students will have access to newer software to run current programs and we will be able to place more computers in each of our rooms. Our goal over the next
few years is to continue to update and increase the amount of technology here at Parkside. Over the next five years, we will continue to have projects funded through this initiative. For more information about the timeline, visit www.browardschools. com and click on the S.M.A.R.T. link. The upcoming year has many fun and exciting activities planned. Please make sure you get involved with our PTA, as they are responsible for many of these activities for our students. This is an easy and fun way to become active in your child’s school and meet some great individuals. To learn more about how to get involved please check out our website at parkside.browardschools.com or contact our front office at (754) 322-7850. We hope everyone enjoyed the “Meet and Greet” on Friday, August 21st. It was great seeing familiar faces as well as many of our new friends who are joining us this year at Parkside. Open Houses will be held September 2nd, for grades K-2 and on September 9th for grade 3-5 and ESE. Both open houses will begin promptly at 7:00 pm. Please check the newsletter and website for up to date information.

elcome back students, parents, teachers and staff. Mrs. Perez, the Principal of Ramblewood Elementary, is continuing to strive towards her goal of providing students with a well-rounded education that combines rigorous academics and a wide variety of extra-curricular activities. This includes our Art, Chorus and Robotics Clubs, which we plan to continue for the 2015-2016 school year. In addition, this year Ramblewood will continue with our Dual Language Program with Kindergarten, first grade and second grade. The goal of this program is to provide students with the opportunity to become bilingual by teaching them listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in both English and Spanish. Each year an additional grade level will be added to the Dual Language Program. Don’t forget if you need after care, “Camp Rams” is available before school from 6:45-7:45a.m. and after school from 2:00 – 6:00p.m. They will be offering a variety of activities such as multi-cultural studies, Music, Drama, Zumba, Line Dancing, Drama, Writing, Science, in-door game room and Art and Crafts just to name a few.
According to U.S. News and World Report, 14 of our high schools rank among the Best High Schools in the nation. In addition, a majority of our high schools, 29 in all, earned placement on America’s Most Challenging High Schools 2015 list by The Washington Post. We also have the largest scholastic Debate initiative in the country, with Debate programs in every high school and expanding to include all middle schools. BCPS is committed to providing the very best educational experience possible to all of our students. As we begin this school year, I wish the greatest success for all of our students. I encourage students and parents to take advantage of all of the incredible educational opportunities available at our schools.
If you haven’t joined PTO, I encourage you to do so. PTO provides a multitude of services such as providing in-house field trips for students, purchasing LCD projectors for classrooms, organizing fundraisers for the school, selling uniforms shirts/sprit shirts, planning social events for our families and much more. Their presence is felt all over the school. Please support their efforts by joining today. If you are interested in volunteering, please fill out a form at www.getinvolvedineducation.com. Please take some time to review our school website and enjoy the wealth of resources and various links available on the homepage. I encourage you to visit the site often as it is updated frequently. his time of year is always exciting, as students, parents and guardians prepare for the start of the new school year. As a Countywide At-Large School Board member, I am honored to represent families across Broward County and am always inspired by the dedication and commitment of our parents, teachers, administrators and staff to the success of our students. There are many educational initiatives, high-quality programs and achievements by our students and schools, for which our community can be proud. From Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) high schools ranking among the best in the nation by U.S. News and World Report, and the prestigious awards earned by our outstanding magnet and innovative programs – to being national models for 21st century learning through our Personalized Learning (Digital 5) and Digital Infusion programs and our efforts to eliminate the schoolhouse to jailhouse pipeline (PROMISE program). Our schools offer a wide variety of academic and enrichment opportunities for students, including but not limited to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) programs, Turnaround Arts, Music and Sports. I am also proud of our commitment to educating all students to reach their highest potential. This includes ensuring schools have the resources and support necessary to

meet each student’s individual needs and engaging them with programs that foster academic growth, while also instilling a sense of community and civic responsibility. Incredible examples of these efforts are the District’s annual Choose Peace activities and the District’s annual Above the Influence March and Rally. Both of these events bring students, parents and the community together in support of standing up to negative behaviors and pressures, and making positive choices. Providing strong mentorship to students, particularly our most at-risk students, is also a primary focus. BCPS Coordinators of Peer Counseling Programs are now the first in Florida to receive a National Peer Program Professionals Certification. Peer counseling programs provide students with prevention-based education and skills on topics such as mental health and wellness, violence prevention, substance abuse prevention and anti-bullying. These are just some of the many accomplishments and initiatives across our District. As a parent or guardian, your support and involvement in your child’s education plays a key role in his or her success. By working together, we are creating a strong foundation for a successful 2015/16 school year.

Dear Parents, Guardians and Community Members:
64
As Superintendent of Broward County Public Schools (BCPS), I am excited about the upcoming start of the 2015/16 school year. We are looking forward to welcoming all of our students back to class on Monday, August 24, 2015. Across our District, there are incredible learning opportunities in place for BCPS students. From our rigorous academic courses and nationally recognized magnet programs – to our fine arts programs, athletics, and extracurricular clubs and activities – there is truly something for everyone. Schools are focal points in the community – bringing families, neighbors, businesses and civic organizations together for the common goal of ensuring our students have the resources necessary to be successful, not only in their education, but as productive citizens of our county, state, nation and world. As the sixth largest school district in the country and the second largest in Florida, we are working hard every day to achieve our vision of “Educating Today’s Students to Succeed in Tomorrow’s World.” Our core mission is to provide quality instruction, utilize research-based strategies and best practices, and provide supportive learning environments to help all students reach their highest potential. As the first in my family to graduate from high school and college, I know firsthand how education changes lives. It is our responsibility to afford students - from the youngest learners to our adult learners - with the skills they need to make their dreams a reality. At every grade level, we strive to energize our students and develop eager learners, who are ready to take on academic challenges. BCPS is a leader in the nation for innovative educational initiatives, such as: • Providing scholastic chess to all second and third grade students in the District. Scholastic chess helps improve students’ critical thinking, problem-solving and social skills. • Becoming the first Florida school district to offer computer science courses at every BCPS high school. Computer science is a foundational field that can prepare students for the 21st century workforce. The basic skills can be applied and utilized in many different career paths. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts one in every two Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) jobs in the country will be in computing occupations, with more than 150,000 job openings annually. This makes it one of the fastest growing occupations in the United States. • Expanding Career and Technical Education programs for middle and high school students. These programs provide students with the opportunity to earn industry
certifications in high-demand career fields. These are the same certifications used by working professionals. • Implementing debate programs at all of the District’s high schools. Through speech and debate classes, students learn research, logic, organization of ideas, and language skills, as well as social benefits such as increased self-esteem. • Expanding Personalized Learning Environments and Digital Infusion initiatives. Among these programs is the District’s award winning Digital 5 program, which utilizes laptops, digital resources, online instructional materials and other learning tools to maximize student learning. The District now offers Personalized Learning and Digital Infusion programs in multiple grade levels. • BCPS also offers Montessori, Cambridge-AICE, Dual Language programs and the largest JROTC cadet program in the nation. Education opens doors to the future. Ensuring our students are college and career ready is at the heart of everything that we do across BCPS. In 2015, The Washington Post ranked 29 BCPS high schools among “America’s Most Challenging High Schools,” based on the schools’ commitment to providing all students with access to advanced coursework. In addition, U.S. News and World Report recognized 14 BCPS high schools for being among the Best High Schools in the country. The 2015/16 school year marks a tremendous milestone for BCPS. It is our 100th anniversary of serving the students of Broward County. A variety of events and activities are taking place throughout the school year in honor of the many achievements of our students and schools over the last century and to celebrate the future of our school system. The District is also moving forward with the important work necessary to meet the most critical needs facing our schools, as well as make investments in music, arts and athletics. Over the summer, the initial phase of scheduled projects began as part of the SMART initiative. You can learn more about SMART by visiting our District’s website, browardschools.com. The list of accomplishments of the District, schools and students continues to grow throughout the year. I encourage you to learn more about what is going on at BCPS and all of the educational opportunities available at our schools by visiting the District’s website. Families, as well as the greater Broward County community, are vital partners in the achievements of our students. I am confident that by working together, the 2015/16 school year will be a successful one.

toneman Douglas DECA had 39 members attend the International Career Development Conference in Orlando, Florida this year. A record thirteen of those students went on to become finalists and they competed once more to determine the top-ten winners in each competition category. Nine of these competitors became top-ten winners in their categories. This includes a 1st place winner in the Stock Market Game category as well as two 3rd place winners who competed in the Stock Market Game and Restaurant and Food Service Management. The awards and recognition well surpassed that of previous years. The most remarkable success that the chapter had at this conference was with the Stock Market Game. In this category, teams of students first created virtual investment portfolios and they were given three months to gain as much as possible with the original amount provided of $100,000. The chapter’s teams were able to perform well with the leading team generating a return of over 31%. Cyril Yared, one of the members on this team, describes the Stock Market Game as being “a profound experience which gave [him] the skills necessary to be able to participate and profit from the real Stock Market.” At ICDC, the teams presented their investment portfolios and the strategies that they used to win. All four teams who competed became finalists.
By Moises Lobaton
All students who attended ICDC were able to greatly develop their presentation and leadership skills. estglades Middle students in the active school club FEA (Future Educators of America) learned about the Teen Trendsetters program that matches teens with elementary students to help them become better readers. They also heard some important and startling statistics. One of which being, children who are not reading proficiently in the 3rd grade are 4 times more likely to not graduate high school. The FEA students enthusiastically wanted to participate. The Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy sponsors Teen Trendsetters, the successful and popular reading and mentoring program that pairs middle and high school students with first, second and third graders who are 6 months or more behind in reading. The Teen Trendsetter mentors committed to 24 sessions and were trained on working with the students. Science based student magazines from Scholastic’s Brainstorm curriculum were used to specifically improve reading skills during their hour-long weekly sessions. The mentees were able to keep the books they read during the program so they could read them with their families at home. The opportunity for middle school students to work with elementary age students was intriguing. However, transportation was a challenge according to Teen Trendsetter program advisor Diana Haneski, the schools Media Specialist. She wondered how could the students from Westglades get to Park Trails after school. Westglades Principal Mr. Jack Vesey knew that the parents would support the program by driving them there at dismissal. Every week during school year, within 15 minutes of school

elcome Back Wildcats! We are eager to begin the new school year. We remind our Wildcat parents to visit our web page to get all of the latest school information http://forestglen.browardschools.com . We hosted Camp Wildcat for all incoming 6th graders . Students have a morning filled with fun activities to introduce them to the school staff and orient them to Forest Glen Middle School. In support of the Superintendent’s “College and Career Readiness” initiative we are providing more opportunities for our students to earn high school credits. Two years ago students had the opportunity to earn 4 high school credits. Now they have the opportunity to earn 8 high school credits. We are in planning to offer up to 12 high school courses and possibly 1 or 2 college courses. We want to provide all students the opportunity to excel and provide courses for every level of student.
getting out, our students were reading with students at Park Trails Elementary. Principal Vesey’s recommendation of working with Park Trails proved to be successful as we had the support of Principal Mr. Rick Redshaw and Media Specialist Mary Elsemiller who welcomed Mrs. Haneski and her mentors every week. They had use of the library along with iPads and laptops for reading eBooks. The Westglades teenage mentors gained leadership skills and were welcomed enthusiastically by the mentees at Park Trails Elementary. The Teen Trendsetters Excellence Award for leadership and service was awarded to 8th grade mentor Rose Katherine Calnan. Rose is the youngest mentor of the Broward County Teen Trendsetters honored this year. For more information visit barbarabush.org/our-solutions/teen-trendsetters-readingmentors/. Creating a Generation of Financially Healthy Children
ealthyStarts was founded to assist parents in creating a generation of young adults financially able to meet most of life’s challenges. Their team of experienced financial professionals understands that since every family is unique, it is essential to design a program tailored to fit those needs. The team at WealthyStarts believe the cornerstone of any sound financial plan is a debt free college education. They believe no one should graduate college with a mountain of student loan debt. During your consultation you will learn about the intricacies of programs such as Florida PrePaid plans and 529 College plans, as they will explain both the advantages and disadvantages these programs. Considering that parents often utilize these plans, WealthyStarts will explain the most common misconceptions about these plans and help you to avoid costly and common mistakes that could impact your child’s ability to obtain additional funding, academic scholarships and other resources. You will also learn how the parental assets and assets of your children will impact financial aid and how to avoid common mistakes which so often disqualify children from additional scholarship and grant programs. Additionally, they teach you how to maximize your child’s financial aid options addressing both Need and Merit based aid. They will design a program that will best utilize these plans as part of your an overall financial strategy, keeping in mind time and budget constraints. They will assist you with financial strategies that will build a dynamic and flexible program that will carry your child through life.
By John Knobel
Your child will have funds for weddings, home purchases and even retirement. WealthyStarts uses the most advanced software in the industry alongside over 100 years of combined financial experience to analyze your current financial situation and goals to help you help your children attain financial independence. Included in their report is an explanation and calculation of your Expected Family Contribution (EFC), Aid Eligibility Report, college cost projection report as well as current rates, graduation rates and trends and the invaluable “What if Reports?” These reports will illustrate the largest misconception of all “I make too much money and my child will not be eligible for aid.” However, they will illustrate the different type of Need and Merit based Financial Aid available and how financial aid varies from school to school. WealthyStarts will show you how to find, secure and lock in the money for your child’s education regardless of your income levels or assets. WealthyStarts will educate parents on how to properly allocate assets so they will maximize financial aid and scholarships, not hinder them. The WealthyStarts checkup can either validate your existing plan in place as a good one or offer alternatives that will ensure your child has the best chance for maximum financial aid. REMEMBER: TIME IS YOUR ENEMY!! Too many parents procrastinate until what would have been a relatively painless task becomes a larger problem.
