POPULAR NORTHEAST FITNESS CONCEPT FLEXES FOOTPRINT TO SOUTHEAST FLORIDA WITH FIRST GYM IN COOPER CITY
R
etro Fitness, one of the nation’s leading low-cost, high-value fitness concepts, recently opened its newest Florida location at 9900 Griffin Road in Cooper City. The new gym joins seven other Florida Retro Fitness locations and is the first club to open in the Southeastern part of the state. With an affordable monthly membership starting at $19.99, Retro Fitness gym members have access to a full collection of top-of-the line strength equipment and cardio machines. “We opened Retro Fitness to provide the community with a facility that will help them achieve their health and fitness goals at a fraction of the cost, but without skimping out on the necessities needed for a good workout,” said Mike Saunders, co-owner and operator of the new Retro Fitness in Cooper City. “Retro Fitness offers a clean and welcoming environment for every member to achieve success without feeling intimidated or overwhelmed – no matter their fitness level.” The Cooper City gym is among the first Retro Fitness locations to integrate Retro Results – powered by the New Exercise Order. This multi-level personal training program provides a solution to members of any fitness level or with any desired price point. The training tiers are comprised of Team Conditioning (TEAM), Small Group Strength Training (SGST) and One on One Training (1:1). All levels of training will incorporate MYZONE technology, which displays real time heart rates, calories, and effort data on large screen TVs inside the gym. This technology will ‘gamify’ the workout experience, encouraging members to
perform to the best of their abilities and push themselves to new limits. In addition to Retro Results, the 23,000 square-foot gym offers a variety of calorie-burning group fitness classes – such as spin, Zumba, kickboxing, yoga and more – in its three dedicated group fitness, spin and boxing rooms. The facility also includes the latest in circuit and weight training equipment, certified personal trainers and cardio machines with personal flat-screen TVs & iPod hook ups. The gym is equipped with full-service locker rooms, a supervised children’s playroom, the latest in tanning technology, a full-service pro-shop and a Retro Blends Smoothie Bar. Members can also keep track of their fitness goals with the free Retro Fitness mobile app. Plus, unlike most local gyms, the new Retro Fitness also features several pieces of Hammer Strength fitness equipment and a large turf field. “Our goal is to provide the community with a gym experience unlike anywhere else – we’re a fun place to work out, we’re friendly, and we’re affordable,” Saunders added. “Members can change their lives for less than 75 cents a day – you can’t beat that price with our amenities.” Retro Fitness Cooper City will be open Monday through Thursday from 5am to 11pm, Friday from 5am to 10pm, Saturday from 7am to 8pm and Sunday from 7am to 7pm. For more information please call Retro Fitness of Cooper City at (954) 590-0496 or visit http://retrofitness.com/location/coopercityfl/.

Dear Readers,
I asked myself, “Is it still OK to wish everyone a ‘Happy New Year’ in February? Well, being as this is our first issue of the year, I decided yes, so “Happy New Year to you all!” We at Sports and Activities Directory wish you an abundance of health, wealth and happiness for 2017! So how are you doing with your New Year’s resolutions? Are you spending more quality time with your family, getting more organized, eating healthier, being more active in the community or sticking with that exercise program? Hopefully, you are following through with whatever your plan may be for 2017. If you find yourself wandering or deviating from your good intentions, don’t give up, re-evaluate your goals while trying to keep them realistic. If we start out the year aiming to win Parent of The Year Award, or to become the next American Ninja Warrior…well, I’m not saying it can’t be achieved, but there is a good chance we might be setting ourselves up for failure. Perhaps if we start by making each step a smaller and more attainable goal, we will be more likely to reach them quicker. Each goal accomplished will in turn make us feel strong, successful and more motivated to take the next step and eventually reach our ultimate goal. Within the pages ahead, we hope to be able to assist you with keeping your balance while accomplishing your goals. We may not have direct solutions for you, but if you think outside the box a little, there’s a good chance there will be something that can help you get on your way. Maybe you need a couple of extra hours a day to study for that new certification you’re gunning for? We have an abundance of afterschool activities and Spring/Summer Camps to keep your youngsters occupied while you take that time to further your career or perhaps learn a new trade! If you are looking to develop or improve your fitness levels, there are some terrific facilities available to us in our community. Perhaps sign up for some Personal Training Sessions, a Pilates Class or a Premium Indoor Cycling class, anything that makes you have to be accountable. By committing your time, taking some expert instruction and challenging yourself with something new, you can be sure to keep your body safe and expect positive results. If your goal is to spend more quality time with your family, take a look in our EVENTS section. There are some fabulously fun happenings around town over the next couple of months. Both Davie and Cooper City host their biggest events of the year. With festivities happening all weekend for either of these occasions, it’s a great time to go see a concert, participate in or watch a parade, maybe even go to the rodeo! A few hours of family fun results in memories that last a lifetime. Whatever your aspirations, desires or dreams are for the year ahead. I wish you much success, love and family fun along the way. Now go out there and win that Parent of Year Award. “Me?... I’ll see you the next American Ninja Warrior tryouts!” My best to you,
Nikki Reading Publisher

T
he SBA says the odds aren’t great; half of new businesses fail before they hit the 3-year mark. “WHAT? You mean I’ve poured my heart and soul and every dime I have, maxed out my credit cards, borrowed from family, and have nothing to show? But I’m passionate about my awesome products and services. They will absolutely change people’s lives!” It takes more than a great idea, passion, and capital to launch or grow your business. I’ve been in business for 22 years and met these folks. Most didn’t make it. The reasons are complex but they all failed to do one or more of the following: have coherent plans, measure results not activity, cover their basic expenses, make a profit, staff properly, or set up systems. They couldn’t translate passion into results. The hardest things to face when starting or growing our businesses are our own limitations. We need great enthusiasm to keep up long hours and hard work. If you can’t admit you don’t know everything, you’ll fail quickly. First, know what YOU are good at...What are your Talents? What are your Skills and Experience? What do you do better than anyone? When you know these things, you can find others to do the rest. “But I can’t afford to hire the talent I need.” Stop. You CAN put together a team without breaking the bank. Interns are great for short-term tasks. Services like Upwork provide people with the right credentials for specific jobs inexpensively. Virtual Assistants can pick up time-consuming administrivia. Work ON the business not IN the business. When I started, I was a one-woman band. I realized I needed a team to survive. A friend encouraged me to build my own website to save money. But no one pays me for that. My daughter developed my website. It wasn’t the greatest but it did the job until I could afford something better. I recruited strategic partners to deliver on larger contracts. Free or inexpensive programs help you learn about incorporation, state requirements, basic accounting, developing a business plan, and shoestring marketing. Soon I could hire an assistant to run daily operations. In the first year, my revenues tripled because I focused on product development, marketing, sales, and delivery. At each step, I shed more non-revenue work and built a profitable small business. Whether you envision running a small business or attracting investors to build a large one, increase your odds; focus your time and energy on your talents and find creative ways to get the rest done. I’m Rebecca Staton-Reinstein, president of Advantage Leadership, Inc. I’ve learned the hard way and I can help save you that pain and improve your odds of success. Call (305) 606-9312, email Rebecca@ AdvantageLeadership.com, or visit www.AdvantageLeadership.com. Join me at the Davie-Cooper City Chamber of Commerce monthly breakfasts or Power Lunches.

Hello Davie,
12
Time sure flies when you’re having fun and 2017 is going to be a great year in “Cowboy Town!” Can you believe that it’s almost time for the 80th Annual Orange Blossom Festival, Parade, and Rodeo? This year will be my 43rd year participating in the Orange Blossom Parade! Whether you join us every year or if this is your first year attending, I guarantee you won’t be disappointed. I am excited to announce that we are reintroducing the Miss Orange Blossom pageant. The pageant will be held at the Pine Island Multipurpose Center on February 4th and the winners will be announced during the parade. The three day Festival will kick off with the Orange Blossom James B. Pirtle Memorial Golf Classic at the Davie Golf and Country Club at 1:00pm, followed by a free concert at the Old Davie School House from 6:00pm – 9:00pm on Friday, February 24th. On Saturday, February 25th, the parade will begin at 10:00am as the community parade travels south on Davie Road from SW 39th Street to Orange Drive. This year’s parade theme is: “A Gallop through Time” where parade floats will pay tribute to Davie’s rich history of agriculture and our hometown equestrian lifestyle. Following the parade, there will be a full day of musical performances, community performances, exhibits, vendors, food, and fun! The festival is scheduled from 9:00am – 6:00pm on Saturday, February 25th and 9:00am – 5:00pm on Sunday, February 26th. As always, the Orange Blossom Championship Rodeo takes place at the Bergeron Arena where cowboys and cowgirls compete in bull riding, bareback riding, cattle wrestling, barrel racing, and team cattle roping events. Join us in Cowboy Town for a great rodeo weekend full of fun and great entertainment at 7:30pm on Saturday and 2:00pm on Sunday! As the summer season approaches I want to remind everyone of the Town of Davie’s Safer By 4 campaign which aims to make sure all of our children are water safe by their 4th birthday. With the amount of canals, lakes, and bodies of water in our area, it is essential to ensure that everyone knows basic water safety skills. The Town of Davie Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department offers year round swim lessons at the Pine Island Pool and seasonal swim lessons at the Betty Booth Roberts Pool for children ages 6 months old through adults. It is never too early, or too late to learn to swim. When looking through the Sports and Activities Directory remember, whether it’s swimming, fitness, youth sports, community special events or recreation classes for all ages, the Town of Davie Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department has something for everyone in your family. For more information on any Davie program, just call (954) 327-3941. As always, see you in the parks, and don’t forget to “Like” us on Facebook.

or over 18 years, Alex Othon has been running winter, spring and summer baseball camps in the City of Pembroke Pines. He recently took a brief hiatus from the sport to focus his efforts on golf. He organized the first annual golf tournament to benefit the Sara Othon Foundation. Proceeds will be donated to the South Florida Chapter of Scleroderma Foundation. Scleroderma, or systemic sclerosis, is a chronic connective tissue disease generally classified as one of the autoimmune rheumatic diseases. Although the disease varies from patient to patient, one of the most visible manifestations of the disease is hardening of the skin. It is not contagious, infectious, cancerous or malignant. The South Florida Chapter of Scleroderma Foundation is dedicated to helping patients and their families cope with scleroderma; promoting public awareness and education; and stimulating and supporting research to help find a cure. Alex’s wife was diagnosed with Scleroderma at the age of 35 and has been battling the disease for over nine years. She worked as a teacher, but had to resign last year as a result of the disease. “Most people have never heard of Scleroderma,” said Sara. “With every passing day, I try to educate more and more people about Scleroderma. The devastating disease affects anything you can think of. It changes your physical appearance, limits your movement, deforms your hands and affects your organs. In my case, it has affected my lungs and caused pulmonary hypertension, which overworks your heart.” Sara says, however, that she tries to stay focused on the
positive. “Knowing things can change from one moment to the next, I choose to live my life positively and full of happiness,” said Sara. “So many people overlook all the blessings they have, but I have learned what is truly important in life. I thank God every day for my beautiful family – my three girls and incredible husband. People tell me that I am a strong person. Little do they know that my family is my source of strength!” In August 2016, Alex formed the Sara Othon Foundation to help raise funds for the South Florida Chapter of Scleroderma Foundation on behalf of his wife. Held at Grand Palms Resort in Pembroke Pines, the inaugural tournament was a huge success and raised over $10,000. The tournament included 103 golfers, as well as approximately 50 people who attended to help organize the event or just show support. There was a silent auction, raffles, food, drink and more. Team Deno won the tournament. Alex has already started planning for next year’s tournament. “There is currently no cure for Scleroderma, so we live one day at a time,” said Alex. “The disease has changed our outlook in life. We stick to the simple things and don’t worry about what we don’t have. The disease has progressed throughout the years, but we keep on fighting. We have three girls and Sara fights every day to see them grow up.” For information on next year’s golf tournament, call Alex Othon at 305-467-6850.

IF YOU DREAM IT – THEY WILL COME! T
he Broward Table Tennis Club started its journey in 1990 at Tree Tops Park in Davie. Carlos Zeller was one of the players and a devoted behind the scenes volunteer until the hurricane Andrew destroyed most of Tree Tops Park in 1992. Carlos stepped in and took charge of the club; over the following years he found different parks and recreations to facilitate the games. While it was much appreciated and enjoyed by club members, having to set up and take down was becoming cumbersome and tiring. Meanwhile, Marty Prager and Terese Teranova, founders of the South Florida Table Tennis Organization, were operating a similar set up and take down club in Coral Springs. The three had gotten together over the years at various tournaments and over lunch one day in 2004 they decided to join forces and open a full time club. “We decided if we didn’t try it then, we would always regret it,” says Terese, a two time Paralympic Gold Medalist and World Champion table tennis player. Marty and Terese were coaching the Kahan family from England at the time. When they shared their idea with Kieth Kahan, he saw their dream as something that could and should be realized. He decided to invest in their venture. The group put their heads together and with the funding in place, Carlos and Terese set out to find the perfect venue to rent and operate as a table tennis club. After 3 years of running a successful club and building a dedicated clientele in a leased facility, Keith and Carlos saw their plan coming to fruition and decided to buy a building in Dania Beach. Renovations were made and for the next seven years they continued to grow
the club running clinics, junior camps, tournaments and open play seven days per week. Before long the demand for table tennis had become apparent and as the club participant numbers were growing, the founders recognized the need for a larger and more elite facility. In 2014 the search for the perfect building began, they soon found out that no such building exists unless you build it from the ground up, so that is exactly what they did. Finding the location wasn’t so easy either, but after many hours and much patience, Carlos found land in Davie nestled between wonderful family communities and the sacred cows on the corner of Stirling and University Drive. The Broward Table Tennis Club opened the doors to their new facility in November 2016 and boasts 19 competition table tennis courts, competition flooring shipped in from Beijing China and lighting that parallels Olympic standards. While they are now hosting some of the largest table tennis tournaments in the world, they keep their doors open to those who are interested in pursuing a recreational outlet, as well as schools, businesses and organizations who wish to host fundraisers, birthday parties and team building fun. Broward Table Tennis Club is located at 3371 N. University Drive in Davie, just south of Stirling Road on the East side of the street. They are currently open Monday – Friday from 4pm – 10pm and Saturday & Sunday from 1pm – 7pm. You can reach Broward Table Tennis Club at (954) 695-3218 Come see for yourself and join the fun in Davie!

n 2008 at the tender age of five, Cooper City Resident Isabella Geraci began taking piano lessons at Embassy Creek Elementary School. Under the instruction of music teacher Ms. Leone, Isabella’s talent was easily recognized and parents Mike and Gloria Geraci were encouraged to further Isabella’s music studies. Although Isabella’s natural flair was apparent, even her parents never imagined that eight years later at 13 years old, their daughter would be invited to perform at New York’s prestigious Carnegie Hall! Isabella continued with private lessons from Yvette Green who has taught piano in Cooper City for many years. Along with her growing talent and some encouragement from her instructor, Isabella gathered the confidence to start entering competitions. In 2013 she took first place in The Florida Federation Piano Competition in the Hymn category and earned two Honorable Mentions in the open solo category the subsequent two years. Following the Pompano Beach Piano Competition in 2015 where Isabella was a finalist, Isabella heard from her instructor about the opportunity to compete internationally to earn a chance to perform at Carnegie Hall. She rustled up some courage, selected a piece to practice and prepared to enter the competition. Early in 2016, using an iPhone Isabella recorded herself in her home performing Chopin’s Nocturne Op. 72 No. 1 in E minor. She performed the piece on the same piano her classically trained father and grandmother had played upon. The piece was submitted electronically to the judging committee. After weeks of waiting and much anticipation, Isabella received notification that she had been selected as one of the Honorable Mention Finalists in the Junior Category. She was one of twenty finalists selected from nearly one
thousand applicants from around the world. Along with that notification was an invitation to perform at New York’s Carnegie Hall! The young pianist was rather modest about her achievement and did not tell any of her friends where she was going that weekend. Word eventually got out when her mom called to inform her soccer coach that she would be missing a game that weekend. The coach was so impressed by this accomplishment that he informed all of the players. Initially she did not want any of her relatives from around the country to attend the performance because it would make her nervous. As the date of the performance drew closer she changed her mind and the entire family were allowed to attend. On December 18th, 2016, Isabella performed as a solo pianist in the Weiss Hall auditorium at Carnegie Hall along with the other 19 finalists from various age groups. She admitted that she was rather nervous once the date of the event came and that walking out on to the stage to perform was quite terrifying. Fortunately, she was able to overcome her nervousness and performed her piece flawlessly and was flattered when some of the older performers complimented her on how well she played. Isabella’s outstanding performance earned her an invitation to enter a Chopin competition to be held this summer. However, with the competitions being so close together, she declined the offer to take a break from the rigorous practice it takes to be successful contender. Mike and Gloria fully support Isabella’s decision and want her to maintain a balance in her life. When asked about the entire experience, Isabella said that her favorite part of the competition was visiting New York and enjoying the city’s pizza.

A Healthier : e c r o iv D Expert Tips To A More Peaceful Process – Part II By Dr. David Yudell & Eric Rayman, Esq. (Family Law)
Tips 1 through 4 were provided in the last issue. For a copy of part
one please feel free to email us (see below).
Tip #5: Know what you own and make copies
Just like any big undertaking, knowledge is power. Understanding the rules of the game and the essential do’s and don’ts improves your odds of a successful outcome. Planning for your divorce is no exception. Begin by making a list of assets, debts, and sources of income. Try to obtain at least three years of tax returns. Gather retirement-benefit information and insurance declaration pages. Make copies of everything. The more information you collect the better as there will be a point in the divorce where you’ll have to review your cost of living (see Tip #6 below). It is also a good idea to create a record of all valuables such as jewelry and collectibles. Take photos as sometimes these items “disappear.” Sign up for electronic statements for your new created individual accounts so that your spouse can’t access by opening the mail. Also, be sure to change online account passwords so that your spouse isn’t tempted to log in to your stuff. Once you’ve collected these documents, it is time to seek legal advice to determine the most efficiently path to resolution with the goal of preserving financial resources.
Tip #6: Develop a plan
Understanding what you may be entitled to under the law is critical. An experienced attorney will guide you through the process and help determine the right strategy to resolve your case. Whether you have questions about alimony, entitlement to benefits, how to value the family business, or something unique to the case, you are not expected
to travel down this road alone. Organizing your documents before meeting with your attorney sends a clear signal that you are prepared and ready to tackle the process. The more involved you are, the more invested you become, and the more confident you will feel in the outcome. Look at how you want your family to “move forward” both during and after the divorce. Therapists, family members, neighbors and friends can be there to help. Keep you communication at a high level, try to work on co-parenting and move in a positive direction.
Tip #8: Big Picture
Viewing your divorce as a speed bump rather than the end of road is meaningful. Perspective is everything as you move forward along this journey. Time does heals old wounds and the best advise often comes from those you love and those who may have already traveled down this road and came out better the other side. A peaceful divorce requires forgiveness. Although you may never get an actual apology from your ex, being able to forgive and move past this chapter only benefits you. Have the courage to forgive so that you can look forward to a brighter future. While there is no perfect way to divorce, your attitude and outlook are critical in framing the process. If you put in the effort, you can and will find the happiness you deserve. We invite you to reach out for future article suggestions. Please email us at DrYudell@DrYudell.com or Erayman@gjb-law.com

DEFEATING A CHILD’S FEAR OF THE DENTIST By Dr. Sandra Brener
M
any parents defer their child’s first dental visit due to their own fear of going to the dentist. What they don’t realize is that the longer they wait the worse the fantasy of the child. Initiating a child into a healthy dental routine at a young age predisposes them to take it as a natural occurrence to visit the dentist. The American academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends the first dental visit by 1 year of age. There are at least 3 very important reasons: 1) When a child develops a habit early in life is more likely to stick to it forever. The first visit by age 1 is mainly focused on the nutritional, oral hygiene habits and sucking habits (pacifier vs finger). 2) The child will have the time they need to develop the comfort level needed to attend the dental office happily. The chances of having severe dental disease by age 1 are very low, so the treatment needed is very simple and non-threatening. This gives both the parent and the child an opportunity to be familiar with the dentist, the staff and the environment. 3) Creating a Dental Home in case there is an emergency and you must see a dentist right away. Dental trauma in children younger than two is very common as they are just starting to walk and they fall constantly, some of those bumps go straight to the face. When the child is older, if there is no emergency involved, there is always an opportunity to develop that trust and the coping mechanisms needed to be a good patient. Several techniques can be used successfully for most patients. 1) Parents provide a positive influence: It is very important that the parent research the dentist before making the appointment and is recommended to visit the dentist before bringing the child if there are any reservations. The parent passes to the child that sense of confidence and trust that the child so much looks up to.
2) Ask-Tell-Ask: Before we can model the child’s behavior, we need to know him/her. This technique helps the dentist identify specific fear or anxiety triggers, I like to do this in the in the kids play area where they are already having a good time. 3) Positive pre-visit imagery: the child is shown photographs of other children having dental work in the reception/play area. 4) Positive reinforcement: We make it our goal to find one positive thing they do, we acknowledge and reward it, making them want to do it again. PARENTS, BE AWARE: positive reinforcement only works when they do something good, if they are crying, running away, kicking…saying “good job” will bring more of that. 5) Distraction: When they already have in their minds a horror movie of what is going to happen at the dentist, the best way to get them out of that movie is by diverting their attention to something else. I ask them about school, movies or sports and once they are comfortable I start introducing what we are going to do by showing them pictures in a story telling format. 6) Tell-Show-Do: We tell them what is going to happen, we demonstrate on their own doll or ours first before we move on to the patient. 7) If all of this is not enough for a very anxious/apprehensive child, we have other resources like nitrous oxide and sedatives. Finally, there’s nothing like a WELL CHECK-UP to have a child go to the dentist happy! www.CooperCityPediatricDentist.com (954) 441 3777

Teenage Anxiety and Stress By Staci Lee Schnell, M.S.,C.S., LMFT
A
nxiety and stress are extremely common among teenagers today. There is an enormous amount of pressure to get good grades and high test scores while also dealing with time commitments required for extracurricular activities, community service hours, and even a paying job. For many teens, this is all required in order to be competitive enough to get into college, and that pressure can cause a great deal of stress and anxiety. The anxiety and stress levels can be so debilitating that it can lead to depression and even suicide. Understanding the signs and symptoms are essential for parents in helping their teenaged children. Some common symptoms include being nervous or overly anxious, procrastinating and/or neglecting responsibilities, seeming overwhelmed, and changes in sleeping habits. Problems with concentration and changes in eating habits have also been associated with teenage stress. Stress cannot only affect a teen’s emotional health, but their physical health as well. Teens become so stressed and anxious that their eating habits may become significantly affected; they may forget to eat, eat the “wrong” things, or overeat. Due to their time demands, teens typically do not get enough sleep and may not have time to exercise regularly. These bad habits can lead to high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity and a weakened immune system. Helping one’s teenaged child manage their stress with the right tools and suggestions is essential in the stress reduction process. Parents modeling positive healthy behaviors such as eating right, exercising, and getting enough sleep is truly valuable for all. EATING: Eating healthfully is important for all. Try eating low-fat, high-fiber, carbohydrate-rich meals with plenty of fruits and vegetables. They soothe us without sapping our energy and give us the nutrients we need to boost our immune system. EXERCISE: Physical activity is one of the best forms of stress relief. Parents should encourage teens to participate in activities such as team sports, yoga, hiking, biking, swimming, jogging, or any form of physical activity they may enjoy. Some of the best types of physical activities are those that have a social component as well. Exercise can even promote family bonding. SLEEP: To maximize a teenager’s chance of a good night’s sleep, parents should encourage them to stop watching TV or engaging on social media about an hour before bed. Drinking caffeine with dinner and stimulating activities close to bedtime can also interfere with a teen’s sleep. Reading is a great bedtime ritual that can actually enhance one’s sleep. BALANCE: Parents should help their teen plan their week. This includes scheduling time to do homework, exercise, community service, extracurricular activities, and most importantly down time. FUN: Parents should encourage teens to find things that bring them joy. That might include listening to music, playing video games, going to the movies or just hanging out with friends. TALK: Encouraging teens to talk to a parent, teacher or other trusted adult can help reduce stress and may lead to new ideas in managing stress. Focusing on teenagers’ strengths can help keep stresses in perspective. Talking to a therapist who is trained in helping people make healthy choices and manage stress is another option.

SCHOOLS By Jodi Cohen, MS.Ed, Director of Early Childhood Education at Temple Dor Dorim Early Childhood Center
I
remember the summer before my senior year of high school my parents announced they were going to be sending me for eight weeks to Israel on a teen tour. “Eight weeks?!” I whined. “I can’t leave my friends for eight weeks! All my friends are staying home, why can’t I?” I was so consumed with worry that I would “miss” something while I was away, that I even contemplated a scheme in which my friend would somehow stage an accident where I’d break my leg and would therefore be unable to go on the trip. I guess the fear of pain stopped me and my parents ignored my ranting and raving and sent me to Israel that summer against my will. It ended up being one of my most memorable experiences and the best summer of my teenage life. Why am I sharing this story? I was a typical teenager, so I did my best to not listen to any advice (or act like I was listening to any advice). Despite my teenage dramatics, my parents stood strong on sending me “against my will.” While my father shook his head and said things like “opportunity of a lifetime” and “you’re insane” my mother calmly told me she would not allow me to sit home for a summer
and do nothing. “Kids with too much time on their hands are kids who get into trouble.” And that was it. Plain and simple. End of discussion. I was fortunate in that my parents held strong against my complaining and whining. Often times as parents we cave in these moments, not wanting our children to be disappointed or upset with us, so we choose not to “push” the experience. When that happens, we might be saving our children and ourselves from “short term pain”, but there’s a lot lost in long term gain. If we don’t allow our children to work through their hesitations and experience the uncomfortable feeling of something new, we might be setting a pattern for the rest of their life that keeps them from reaching beyond their comfort zone and living a life of missed opportunities. Whether its swimming lessons, day camp, Travel Camp, sleep away camp, sports camp or a teen tour, keeping our kids busy with productive experiences helps lay the foundation for building character and developing life skills. That summer opened the door to a new world for me. When that summer was over, from that point forward, instead of looking at what I might miss, I looked at every future opportunity as a possibility and most often as a willing and eager participant.

in Davie, Florida was presented with a check for $21,000 by the pastors of local churches in the area while attending the Love South Florida event at Flanagan High School. The leader who coordinated the effort of this most substantial gift is Pastor Erik Bennett of the Hope Fellowship Church. For the past few years Principal Crosby and Pastor Erik have forged a lasting partnership and friendship. The two often discussed the needs of the students at Flamingo Elementary School and in one conversation Principal Crosby recalled telling Pastor Erik, in response to his beautifully simple and direct question about what Flamingo really needs. She simply and directly answered that her third graders needed laptops and the cost would be around $20,000, never thinking that that request would ever fully come to pass. A few years went by, but Pastor Erik did not forget that conversation. Fast forward to November 30, 2016 and Pastor Erik along with Pastors Jon Lash of the Green

his issue’s Pathway focus is Health Sciences. Among the fastest growing, steadiest, and most profitable fields in the workforce, jobs in Healthcare nationwide are expected to grow 19% in the next decade; in Broward county, careers in healthcare and related fields are expected to grow by nearly 20%. Because there are so many career paths for those entering the field of healthcare, highlighting an accurate average salary is nearly impossible. However, as a point of reference, the average pay for a Physician’s Assistant – which requires a Master’s Degree – is upwards of $95,000 nationwide. Additionally, Dental Hygienists earn an average of nearly $70,000 a year and require only an Associate’s Degree. Suffice it to say that our student population has a vast array of entry points into the healthcare field, and all of them lead to sustainable careers with long-term potential for growth. Across Broward County Public Schools, the CTACE Department oversees health science programs across twenty-one high schools, servicing over 6,000 students in courses such as allied health, practical nursing, medical skills and services, firefighting, emergency medical responding, vet assisting, and biotechnology. Last year, students earned hundreds of industry-level certifications, such as Certified EKG Technician and Certified Medical Administrative Assistant. Given the office-related skills
House Church, Jon Elswick of the Crossway Church, Arthur Connor of the Metropolitan Baptist Church, Gary Wallace of the Pioneer Community Church, and Virgil Sierra of the Vertical Church all jointly presented Principal Crosby with a check for $21,000 at Flanagan High School to purchase her laptops! Mrs. Crosby shared that she was genuinely surprised when the gift was given, never thinking that the entire cost of the laptops would be underwritten. She recalled being so deeply moved by the generosity of the churches following the presentation that she emailed and tweeted everyone all evening so much so that she said she did not sleep at all that special night. Thanks to the enormous generosity of the churches and the unwavering commitment engendered by Pastor Erik to take the lead in the coordination of this effort, Flamingo Elementary third graders will now all have laptops. Thank you pastors and congregants – each of you truly contributed to the enhancement of the education of the children at Flamingo ELementary.
necessary to perform tasks in healthcare, some schools have even begun to offer training in the Microsoft suite of programs, including Word, Outlook, and Excel. Students are able to engage in competitions through organizations like HOSA, and instructors work diligently to supplement their in-class teaching with site-based learning through experiences like clinicals and facility tours. Instructors and CTACE staff work together to offer students these experiences, working with facilities like Cleveland Clinic and Joe Dimaggio Children’s Hospital. Recently, students from our high school programs participated in the Day in the Life of a Nurse program as well as the Broward College Health Sciences tour. Students were able to learn what nurses face on a daily basis and preview many of the pathways available to them in the healthcare fields. Students left both events with a deeper understanding of their options and exactly what they need to do – both in and out of class – to achieve their career goals. iddle school is a place for learning to juggle six different classes, but for Pioneer Middle, it is also a place to learn about character education. The school’s morning announcements group, PMTV, launched a campaign of kindness on Halloween. The campaign is centered around precepts, or ‘words to live by,’ an idea inspired by the book Wonder by R.J. Palacio. Every week, PMTV includes a precept segment during their morning announcements; Monday announcements introduce the precept, while Tuesday through Friday announcements show the precept in action in different ways. The precepts are also printed on brightly colored paper and hung all around the school. Ms. Ferreira, the announcements advisor, has high hopes for the idea of involving precepts at school. “Our goal is for students to be thinking about quotes that inspire, or words to live by, and to hopefully put them to use in their own lives,” said Ms. Ferreira. The debut precept was “The smallest good deed is greater than the grandest intention.” Soon after it aired, the school started catching on. “When I heard about the concept of the precepts, I knew I wanted to get involved and help spread the word,” said Peer Counseling teacher, Ms. Tegeler. “My students noticed the small signs around the school and brought up the idea of creating a bulletin board so every person that walks by it can see the quote. It’s just one way we can help kids see a bigger picture – words matter, it’s important to use kind ones.”
Scan this QR code to see the Halloween episode of PMTV, which kicked off the campaign of kindness.
In December, PMTV decided to take it to the next level with a schoolwide door-decorating contest. “We invited all sixth-period classes to chose a precept and decorate their door according to their quote,” said Ms. Ferreira. Students and teachers went as far as hanging lights and spreading their door decorations onto the walls surrounding their door. Precepts ranged from messages of kindness to quotes about working hard to reach goals. Sixth grade math teacher, Mrs. Nolan, said, “When I brought it up to my sixth period, I told them they would be totally in charge and I would help facilitate. Students agreed and several looked up precepts. They were compiled into a list and each student got one vote. The precept chosen was discussed at length and thought extremely relevant for the world today. We came together as a class, learned something and most importantly had fun!” Yearbook students took pictures of each participating door and in January the faculty and staff voted on the best one.
GREETINGS SPORTS FANS! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! By Commissioner Jeff Green
H
opefully, this year has been a good one for you and your family thus far. As we move into the year, 2017 is shaping up to be a year of the unexpected. Our country has sworn in our 45th President, Mr. Donald Trump, and moving forward in a way that seems somewhat unconventional. It does appear that this year, unlike past years, promises not to be business as usual! While this might be an overwhelming thought for some, we all should embrace the moment and ask ourselves the question, what are we willing to invest to ensure that 2017 is a great year for our families, our friends, our communities, and our nation? Will it be assisting those who are less fortunate, perhaps serving as a volunteer in our public schools, or being more civic minded in our local communities. Whatever the cause, we should make a commitment to get involved!
It’s probably going to take a little effort, but no longer can we afford to sit on the sidelines of life and allow others to invest on our behalf. I recently attended an event that honored World War II Veterans in our city and was saddened by some of the comments made by our heroes. A lot of them live in assisted living facilities throughout Broward and Dade County and stated that they don’t have anyone to come and visit them. People only remember on Veterans Day, but what about the rest of the year? These men and women put their lives in jeopardy so that we could enjoy the liberties and freedoms afforded us in this nation and we owe it to them to do more for them. I am going to do my part, what about you? I would be remiss if I did not thank the residents of Cooper City for allowing me the pleasure of serving as one of their elected officials for the next four years. It has been an honor and I am truly blessed to live, work, and play in Cooper City! God bless you and God bless this nation!

welve-year-old Tyler Zager is already considered one of the best chefs in the country and the Weston resident has not even graduated from middle school. He recently appeared on Food Network’s Kids BBQ Championship, where he battled seven other contestants to determine the best kid grill master. He won the $20,000 grand prize and a feature in Food Network Magazine. The young chef hopes to be the next Bobby Flay and have his own cooking show one day. Tyler applied online to earn a spot on the Kids BBQ Championship. After he had several interviews to talk about himself and discuss his cooking, he was selected to compete on the show. To prepare, he tested all of his recipes multiple times until he knew them well. “I never expected to win,” said Tyler. “I just wanted to have a good time.” During the six episodes, which had nine rounds, Tyler participated in a series of timed challenges that included themes like Hawaiian luau and cowboy campfire. He was judged by some of the biggest names in barbeque, such as Tim Love and Graham Elliot. Tyler’s dishes included the following: • Episode 1 – Mustard Herb Chicken, Spicy Carolina Chicken Wings, Mac & Cheese • Episode 2 – Miami “HOT” Dog, Stuffed Bison Burger, Potato Slices, Herb Buttered Corn • Episode 3 – Pork Slider, Mahi Mahi Tacos, Grilled Starfruit and Pineapple • Episode 4 – Shrimp Po’ Boy, Dessert Pizza • Episode 5 – Cinnamon Toast Crunch French Toast, Porterhouse Steak, Chili, Fresh Cornbread • Episode 6 – Chicken, Ribs, Brisket, Grilled Watermelon “The Hawaiian episode was the hardest for me, because I didn’t know what was normal for them and how to really cook that style,” said Tyler. “I was so nervous in the last round, considering I knew how good my fellow competitor’s food was.” Tyler says it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. He plans to use the $20,000 prize to go to culinary school. “The highlight was the entire experience and learning how the entertainment industry works,” said Tyler. “It was so exciting to meet all of these great chefs. Graham Elliot was my favorite, because I know him the best and I know that he really knows his food.” Tyler has been passionate about cooking since he started baking with his grandmother on the weekends at age seven. Then he started helping his mom cook dinner and took over in the kitchen. He creates many of his recipes by experimenting with different ingredients. He also edits recipes from the Internet or gets them from other family members. He always prefers to cook with fresh ingredients. “Fresh ingredients add lots of flavor to your dish compared to non-fresh ingredients,” said Tyler. “They also add great color.” Although he cooks different styles and uses a variety of techniques, he loves to grill. His favorite food to make is garlic butter steak, because it is easy to make and has a lot of flavor. “I love how in grilling you get to actually see the food cook unlike most cooking ways,” said Tyler. “Also, I like to hear the food sizzle and see the flame cook it. The secret to cooking/grilling well is to always cook your meat to the right temperature.” Tyler was recently on SOFLO Taste with Michelle Bernstein on local Channel 10, where he made his grandmother’s famous sugar cookies. He was featured in Family Circle Magazine’s December 2015 issue. He was also on an episode of the Beat Bobby Flay Show, as part of the Kids Take Over episodes, where he served as a host with Sunny Anderson of The Kitchen. This was especially exciting for Tyler, since Bobby Flay is the chef he admires most. When Tyler is not cooking, attending NSU University School, or with his friends, he often spends his time volunteering. He sells baked goods and cookie kits at local farmer’s markets to help raise money for No Kid Hungry. He was one of the top five individual donors in 2016. Over the last eight months alone, he raised over $3,000 for the organization. He was named a bake sale hero and will be featured on some of their promotional material in 2017. “The proceeds go to kids in the U.S. who can’t afford food,” said Tyler. “This is important, because I know how I would feel without food. It feels amazing to be a bake sale hero knowing that I am doing a lot to help end childhood hunger in the U.S.” To learn more about Tyler, visit www.tylerzager.com.
