Dear Readers,

Five years ago I sat down to write my very first publishers letter. “I am honored, thrilled and excited to bring this beautiful magazine to our community” were my opening words. I truly was! Today, as I sit down to write this issue, I reflect on my five year journey with much pride and gratitude. Having gone through the life-changing trauma of losing my husband less than two years before, I had found myself in the position of being sole provider for my family. My business at that time as an Athletic Trainer was very much a feast or famine kind of deal and I had understandably somewhat lost my ‘mojo’. After taking some time to try and adjust my mindset and gather myself again, I started to look for a new business that would be more steady to throw myself into. It was around this time that I was approached by my new found friend, President and owner of Sports & Activities Directory, Margot Puleri. Margot presented her product to me and shared her 10 year-long journey of what it took to get the publication to where it was, serving the communities across Broward County. I was totally blown away by not only what she had produced, but by the passion she exuded for her business. After much discussion, Margot invited me to join forces, start up and head a new publication for the Davie, Cooper City And Southwest Ranches area. Considering I had never published a thing in my life, Margot and I took a blind leap of faith in one another; I accepted the challenge and got to work. For the next seven months, I worked tenaciously gathering information from city officials, schools, local businesses, sports programs and community members. As exhausting as it was, I was working on pure adrenaline as I saw the magazine coming together. On October 1st, 2012 the first issue of Sports and Activities Directory for Davie/Cooper City/Southwest Ranches was launched. The magazine exceeded our expectations and was embraced by the community. Five years later, I find myself smiling as I write this, realizing how far I’ve come. This issue is of special significance to Sports & Activities Directory overall as we collectively celebrate 15 years of Publication! We have a team of hard working individuals who I am blessed and honored to call friends, together we proudly serve the communities across Broward County. October 1st not only marks the 5th anniversary of the Davie/Cooper City/SW Ranches Publication, but it is also my birthday! It’s so fitting as this community magazine continues to be my best birthday present year after year. I feel very privileged to be part of such a great community and so grateful to all of our city officials, schools, readers, contributors and advertisers for making our magazine what it is. I can honestly still say “I am honored, thrilled and excited to bring this beautiful magazine to our community”. Sports and Activities Directory has been designed to help families make the most of the area in which they live. I hope you enjoy this ‘Back to School issue’ and make the most out of its content. In the midst of all the hectic nature of the season, take time to enjoy each other, create some memories and have some family fun in this community we call home! Happy 2017/18 school year and Happy Anniversary to us! My best to you, always,

Nikki Reading President/Publisher Sports Publishing Corp.

Hello Davie,

10

I can’t believe summer is nearing its end and a new school year is ready to begin! As a former teacher, I hope all of our youth had a fun and safe summer. Even though summer is almost over, it is never too late to teach your kids important water safety skills. Parents, the Town of Davie offers terrific swim lessons for children (and adults) 6 months of age and older at the Pine Island and Betty Booth Roberts Pools. Our trained staff are not only qualified, but they make learning to swim fun! We recently had a 7 month old master the art of turning over in the water and floating on her back, without assistance. I am very proud of the Town of Davie’s commitment to the #Saferby4 initiative to make all of our children water safe by their 4th birthday! Our Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department also offers wonderful programs, events and sports leagues. This month our full page ad highlights all of the youth sports programs offered throughout the year. Be sure to mark your calendars now to remind you when to register. Youth sports are so much more than just a game. They teach children teamwork and discipline, provide social opportunities, and build self-esteem. The benefits to your children are truly endless. I also invite everyone to join us for several upcoming events that will be hosted at the Davie Arena and the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. In Cowboy Town, on September 9th we celebrate Davie’s roots during the Weekley Brothers Pro Rodeo. The gates will open at 6:00pm and the performance will begin at 7:30pm. On October 14th Construction Angels will host the 2nd Annual Doc Reno’s Bacon, Blues and Brews Festival. On October 28th and 29th JES Productions will host the 2nd Annual Seafood Festival. All of these great events are “rain or shine” in our covered arena! Also, don’t worry about the heat; the arena has giant fans to keep cool! One of my favorite events each year is the Halloween Happenings event at Robbins Park and Preserve. The park is a perfect setting for a day of “spooktacular” fun! Join Play Davie on October 28th for the Halloween Happenings event which includes a costume contest, games, youth entertainment, vendors, a pumpkin patch sponsored by the Boy Scouts, and a haunted house sponsored by the South Florida Cloggers. As always, we will be hosting the Horse Costume Contest during the event. I challenge all equestrians to participate this year and make it the biggest horse costume contest to date! When looking through the Sports and Activities Directory, remember: whether it’s swimming, fitness, youth sports, community special events or recreation classes for all ages, the Town of Davie Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department has something for everyone in your family. For more information on any Davie program, just call (954) 327-3941. As always, see you in the parks, and don’t forget to “Like” us on Facebook.

Hello Cooper City,

12

A joint resolution (HJR7105) recently passed the Florida House and the Florida Senate and will be voted upon in November, 2018 as a constitutional amendment. The amendment, if passed by a 60% majority, will add a $25,000.00 homestead exemption to the current $50,000.00 exemption option already in place, bringing the total to $75,000.00 for homes valued between $100,000.00 and $125,000.00. Some opponents have referred to the bill as the “Fools Gold Bill”. While Florida Legislators present the amendment as a “tax cut”, some local taxing authorities and other service providers refer to the amendment as a “tax shift”. The dollars it takes to maintain municipal services such as tree-trimming, sports programs, utilities, police & fire services, transportation and other programs would have to be made up in other ways. Florida homeowners may be under the impression that they will save money if the 2018 proposed constitutional amendment to increase the homestead exemption passes; this, however, is far from the truth. In the first year alone, the new exemption will result in a $73.7 million loss to Broward County and our 31 cities. Cooper City alone will experience a $1,352,000.00 loss in property taxes. This could cause us to either raise the millage rate significantly to make up for the loss, or cut services that we would no longer be able to afford. On July 16, 2016 the City Commission of Cooper City elected to set the millage rate at 6.3847 for the fiscal year 2016/2017 as recommended by the city manager. If the proposed Florida constitutional amendment passes in November of 2018, Cooper City residents might be looking at a substantially higher millage rate in the future. Taxpayers do not appreciate having their taxes increased by any means. While we make every effort to keep our millage rate low in Cooper City, there are few options available that would offset the $1.3 million loss. Cooper City residents have grown accustomed to an elevated standard of service and are not likely to want to see any reduction to those service levels. We’ve fought to give our residents a safe and aesthetically pleasing environment through the Reinvest in Cooper City initiative, and hope to maintain these programs on behalf of our constituency. Making up for a million dollar plus deficit is no small feat and we will have to find ways to do so. Unfortunately, this could result in a decrease in provided services and/or service quality or quantity. As a result, a tax break which could otherwise be valued at roughly a couple of hundred dollars per household, per year, may inevitably cost the average citizen much more. Tough decisions will have to be made as to how to deal with this revenue loss, most likely through a reduction in services/levels of service or increases in other revenue options. This is a complex issue. Get the facts and be an educated voter. Please feel free to call me if there is anything you would like to discuss on this or any issue that affects our city. Please check out our upcoming events, programs and activities located in the directory of this publication. I look forward to seeing you at our fall community events. With our thoughts and actions, we make the world a better place.

Greg Ross Mayor

AROUND TOWN By Kendyl Counts

Each year, government officials from around the state are selected to receive

the Home Rule Hero Award for their efforts to progress the Florida League of Cities’ agenda and help preserve the home rule of Florida’s cities. With his constant focus on making the world a better place, it is no surprise that Cooper City Mayor Greg Ross has earned this honor yet again, marking his third year as a Home Rule Hero. Home Rule Heroes are “shining examples of local advocacy in action”, according to Boca Raton Mayor and Florida League of Cities President Susan Haynie. A mix of both elected and nonelected government officials, the 2017 Home Rule Heroes are being recognized for their reliability in responding to the League of Cities’ requests

to connect with members of the legislature and help provide local viewpoints on expansive matters. Home Rule is the ability for a city to establish its own form of government and enact ordinances, codes, plans, and resolutions without prior state approval. This allows cities to swiftly and adequately respond to the needs of its own citizens – an approach that Ross believes is worth protecting on behalf of Cooper City residents. Collaborating with legislators in order to bring awareness to topics that are important to Cooper City residents, Ross works to maintain the quality of life in Cooper City and ensure that it lives up to its dictum of being “someplace special”.

P

rior to 2013, iFLY tunnels in Orlando and San Francisco had created their own programs to meet the demand from teachers for engaging STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) field Trips. After much success in these markets, iFLY decided to create a robust STEM program to serve K-12 students that could be replicated in tunnels around the country. STEM Education professionals created a curriculum for elementary, middle and high school. The program was piloted in Austin Texas before delivery at the national level. Is now serves thousands of students all over the US each month. Students are exposed to math, science, and physics concepts relating to the indoor skydiving activity before experiencing the phenomena for themselves. Goals of the program 1. Increase student interest in STEM and awareness of STEM careers 2. Show students STEM is relevant, exciting, and grounded in the real world 3. Support teachers’ classroom efforts by presenting grade appropriate STEM content in a hands-on, experiential way Careers in the STEM field are the fastest growing and highest paying in the national economy, yet many young people are not interested in pursuing STEM careers. They view STEM as something that exists in a textbook, not something that impacts their own lives. iFLY has a unique opportunity to show students that STEM is relevant, real, and exciting. By using the highly engaging context of indoor skydiving, iFLY gives students a hands-on and full body experience of STEM. We want students to leave our facilities feeling inspired to pursue STEM experiences in their own lives. Here are some facts about STEM • STEM jobs are growing faster and earning more than any other field: Yet 90% of graduating seniors say they “aren’t interested”. • Governments, schools, and corporations are heavily investing in STEM. • STEM professionals earn 26% more than other workers. • The growth rate of STEM jobs is 2 times that of other fields. • Male students are over 3 times more likely to be interested in STEM majors and careers than female students. • Over 80% of students do not choose STEM paths after high school. • Only 36% of U.S. high school students are ready for college-level science. iFLY Fort Lauderdale is the only indoor vertical tunnel in South Florida and since its opening in February 2017, the tunnel has flown hundreds of students.

TEACHINGS OF DANCE PHILOSOPHY AT CANDY JAZZ

t Candy Jazz, time is a favored instrument that never wears out, a promise of very improvable achievements. The student, beyond his formal artistic practice, focuses into their own spiritual interior, in order to obtain values that can be shared in their family and social environments. The practice environment is conceived under human basis, in a simple and warm place that inspires respect and well-being and where they will have the opportunity to recreate, educate and prepare for the arts, in a fun, fine, friendly way and so they can cultivate values of responsibility, respect, discipline, commitment and above all education. In thinking like that, the academy contributes to instill the values of humility and simplicity, as well as faith in ourselves. The student learns to demand discipline and technique that establishes him and in turn enjoys every day on stage with satisfaction that at the end shows that not only has learned the art he has chosen, but recreates and executes. The teaching method includes compliance and respect for the established rules are implemented both in the classroom and throughout the academy. Working on the emotional aspect of each student is a unique work promoting self-esteem. The student is given the fair value of their final learning so you can fully enjoy what he does. The

interaction between peers is an important human relationship required in order to achieve easily. Stimulation of cognitive development, enrichment and development of intelligence awakening new challenges between mind and body, make parallel the areas of attention, concentration, memory and spatial relationships work. This result is obtained when the student learns starting from the simple and everyday tasks until reaching the most complex. This teaching perspective applies to each genre that develops in the academy. When we speak of Ballet she is the mother of all dances, is the foundation of all dancer. The dancer has the opportunity to train to be classical only or to develop physically and get the best technical and artistic fulfillment of conditions in other genres of dance. The Jazz is a discipline that prevails in contemporary musical chronology and its varied styles makes it more exciting as it is lyrical, modern, Afro, commercial, urban and dance theater. The jitterbug is formed with personality, strength and full of vitality, making it a more comprehensive dancer. Finally, the Tap, a rhythmic and fun, the awakening of a genre that keeping your technique, captivates with its avant-garde trends over time, from a classic Tap, urban Tap and takes you to different waves of jazz. LESSONS LEARNED FROM THE BALLET BARRE A

t two and a half years old, I toddled around my dance class at Stella’s Dancers’ Studio and my only objective was to have fun. I’m sure my classmates thought the same. Who knew that for the rest of our youth, many of us would dedicate hours of our lives to perfecting dance routines, trying on costumes, and everything else that came with the life of a dancer? But beyond the steps and the sequins, I learned much more in my years of dance than just how to point my toes. Even though I haven’t touched a ballet barre in years, I still take many things with me in my non-dancer life: 1.How to Be a Team Player Unless you were doing a solo, dance was not an individual activity. It required collaboration and leaning on each other for support – sometimes literally. Not only did you have to trust that everyone would do their part, but everyone needed to put in the effort to help reach whatever our goal was. If we wanted to win that first place grand champion for our group dance, it had to be a team effort. Whether that was going over changes to a routine before class or helping someone zip up their costume, we were a unit. Dance helped me develop a team mentality and understand that one person cannot carry the weight of the group.

2. The Importance of a Good Work Ethic I promise that you will not wake up one day and be able to do a triple pirouette. In order to get there, it will take hard work – and patience. I don’t know how old I was when I started to learn how to do a pirouette, but I know it took me years to be able to turn around not only once, but three times. Even through my final dance years, getting three turns in wasn’t guaranteed. I always had to work for it. If I had given up every time a step was too hard, I wouldn’t have been in the top dance groups and wouldn’t have gotten to celebrate competition victories with my teammates. 3. Lifelong Friendships When you have to get each other through “one more time” of doing the dance and you share everything from deodorant to lipstick, how could your dance friends not be in your lives forever? Currently, most of my dance friends and I don’t talk every single day, but we still have that bond. We keep up with each other on Facebook and tag each other in memories of group sleepovers and picture days. We may currently be in different places, but the memory of when we were kids and it felt like we spent more hours together than apart will keep us entwined in each other’s lives forever.

School is BACK in Session! – Start off Strong By Dr. David Yudell

B

y the time you read this, your child will be back in school. We all want our children to be successful. Education requires many components to be successful. Starting the year with open eyes is often the best approach. We quickly learn how to buy school supplies, prepare a lunch, backpack and find out the best way to get to school. The subtlety of what to do when there is a “bump” in the road is when parents start to get lost. I am hopeful that this article will help and provide some direction. First off, we should be working to teach our children how to work hard. Carol Dweck and Claudia Mueller, completed a study looking at the effects of praise on young students. Half were praised for working hard and the other half were praised for their ability or “smartness.” When given a set of problems, those praised for hard work performed 25% better than the “smart” group. The lesson taught from this and similar research is that to get the best effort and results out of our children we need to reinforce hard work rather than ability. The lesson we want them to learn is that their hard work was directly responsible for their success. Change your approach to praise and reinforcement and you will give them the building blocks to learn to control their endeavors through effort. As a parent you can do this by helping your child to learn that studying, practice and work is what will most frequently lead to success. Become a model for your child’s endeavors. Praise them often for their effort not their accomplishments. Offer immediate, positive feedback on what they are doing and you will see their success, and most importantly their belief that they can affect positive change in their lives build year after year.

The second obstacle occurs when a problem presents itself. It can be behaviors that get in the way of your student’s learning or ability to function within their class. It can be poor performance within the academic arena or come from an emotional category such as fears, physical illness or school refusal. Administration is helpful but their focus is divided between your child and the well being of the school. When a difficulty similar to those I just mentioned begins it is time to reach out for help. The longer the problem exists the harder it is to reverse or correct it. Throughout the year my office completes several examinations known as Psychoeducational evaluations. As a psychologist I have the ability to evaluate children at any age. We deal with social communication or developmental disorders, behavioral disruption (attention difficulties or poor behavior) academic difficulties, including IQ (intelligence quotient), learning disabilities, verbal skills, reading comprehension and fluency, spelling, mathematics, memory and writing skills. Attention deficits are also frequently explored and include an area known as executive functioning. Executive functioning involves skills such as planning, organization and time management. The goal is to find happiness and success while finding the upper end of academic achievement. Preparing yourself for what is needed AND the detours that present themselves are the best combination for success. Dr. David Yudell is a licensed psychologist and can be reached at DrYudell@DrYudell.com.

Pediatric Occupational Therapists (OTs) are life builders for children whose

lives have been raided by disability especially those with Autism and Cerebral Palsy. OTs assist these individuals to be free of their isolation, and help them to share their abilities with others. Osho says, “Nobody is superior, nobody is inferior, but nobody is equal either. People are simply unique. You are you, I am I.” OTs do not attempt to make clients like everyone else. We embrace their strengths, and work on the areas that are weakened which affect their everyday functioning. If a child has difficulty controlling his or her self-stimulating behaviors, we teach them how to satisfy that crave in supplementary ways so that it does not affect their functioning and those around them. We want them to share their uniqueness. If a child with Cerebral Palsy demonstrates impairments with his or her motor control and coordination skills which affect his or her activities of daily living including dressing, bathing, and social interaction skills, occupational therapist help remediate deficits and train clients and caregivers on compensatory techniques as needed in order to lead fulfilling lives. Various children with Autism may miss sensory information from the environment that provide signals about what is going on in their surroundings and may be referred to as having poor registration. The brain may not be getting what it needs to produce appropriate responses. Other children may be referred to as having seeking behavior. These individuals are characteristically active and continuously engaged in their environments. They add sensory input to every experience in daily life. They may appear impulsive and the consideration for safety when playing may be absent. Some children with Autism may display hypersensitivities to sounds, sights, smells, tastes, and textures. These children may have sensitivity behavior. They have over-reactive neural systems that make them aware of every stimulus that becomes available, and do not have the appropriate ability to adjust to these stimuli. Children may also present as having avoiding behavior which represent those who may engage in disruptive behaviors especially in situations where they know they are having difficulty with. They avoid circumstances by either withdrawing or participating in emotional outbursts that enable them to get out of the situation. The child may appear

stubborn and controlling and prefer routines without any sudden changes. The child is creating a state to limit sensory input to those events that are known and therefore easy for the nervous system to interpret. There is not a cookie-cutter treatment plan for these exceptional children. OTs provide the children and caregivers with individualized recipes (treatment plans) called a sensory diet with ingredients (tools) to assist the child to regulate his or her sensory system for success at home, school, and in the community. Children with Cerebral Palsy characteristically demonstrate deficits with reflex, body movement, muscle tone, balance, posture, muscle coordination, and receiving and responding to information through the senses. These complications can considerably impair a child’s ability to successfully participate in his or her activities of daily living including, dressing, feeding, sitting, standing, socializing, and much more. These limitations can lead to isolation. OTs encompass the skills necessary to improve their posture, reduce muscle tone and improve their range of motion. OTs will improve a child’s self-care skills, visual motor skills, handwriting skills, and the ability to navigate their environment. These skills are imperative to improve a child’s functional independence to replace isolation into inclusion. But, treatment does not end in the therapy clinic. A comprehensive home exercise and activities program and family education are vital to this process. OTs are knowledgeable in numerous areas in pediatric care. The focus is on improving a child’s functional independence. Through individualized treatment strategies and taking a family-centered approach, limitations can be altered into great expectations. A

healthy dose of family, fitness, food and fun were being served up this past weekend at a fundraiser held by the Live Fit Connect Gym, in Cooper City, FL. The event was part of a community effort to help raise funds for Sebastian Estevez, a 3-year-old boy suffering from Mucopolysaccharidosis Type II (MPS II), also known as Hunter Syndrome; a rare, progressively incapacitating genetic disease, for which there is currently no cure. Last year, prior to learning of her son’s diagnosis, Sebastian’s mother, Jenn Estevez (33), was seeking answers about his then pre-existing condition (communicating hydrocephalus) when she came across the signs and symptoms of Hunter Syndrome online. Unbeknownst to the Estevezes, this would set the wheels in motion for what would soon be something that no family should ever have to endure. Sebastian, an adorably pint-sized power house, is one of 500 boys within the nation who currently have Hunter Syndrome - a disease so rare that it affects less than 2,000 boys worldwide. The fatal genetic disease is triggered by a missing or malfunctioning enzyme necessary in breaking down cellular waste. At first glance, Sebastian appears to be vibrant and animated, with no signs of ailment whatsoever. However, as resilient as he may seem, he is not without physical limitations. “If you watch him on a playground, he is super cautious because he doesn’t have good balance because his joints are so stiff; he has problems climbing up things, things other kids can just fly over, he just can’t do those things, except he doesn’t know it,” explained Jenn. Generally, boys with the syndrome will continue to advance physically and cognitively, until they reach ages 2-5. At this age, they begin to regress; gradually losing the ability to walk, talk, and eat. Most do not live to see their teen years. In search of guidance, Sebastian’s father, Mario Estevez (41), decided to contact the National MPS Society after learning of Sebastian’s diagnosis to find out what could be done to help save their son’s life. That’s when the family learned of gene therapy and Project Alive. Gene therapy is an innovative approach to treating genetic diseases. It delivers a normal copy of the defective gene which in turn causes the body to naturally produce the missing enzyme. Coincidentally, the same day that Mario made the call to the National MPS Society, it happened to be a major milestone for

By Megan Baksh

the advancement of gene therapy for a different form of MPS related to Sebastian’s. “The woman I spoke to apologized for sounding distracted. She said, ‘I don’t know if you can hear, but the phones are ringing off the hook here because today is the first day a human being with MPS was treated with gene therapy’,” he explained. Researchers are in the final stages of developing the first gene therapy clinical trial for boys with Hunter Syndrome; funding is the only barrier standing in the way. As Hunter Syndrome is such a rare disease, major drug companies are not willing to invest in research for such a small population without gains in profit. The Estevez family has refused to let such a setback deter them from doing everything in their power to fight for Sebastian’s life. Working alongside Project Alive (a non-profit corporation dedicated to Hunter Syndrome awareness and fundraising), the family has devoted their lives to fundraising for a cure, a passion which has taken a significant toll on them all. “We are constantly multitasking and attending various fundraisers, because at this point there is no option to live in the moment as everything comes second to saving Sebastian’s life,” said Jenn. “It’s like we’re almost sacrificing the present for the hope of the future,” Mario expressed further. The father of two shared that it has been particularly hard on his son Omar (8), who sometimes finds it difficult to grasp the severity of Sebastian’s disease because he “looks so normal, and is so smart.” Although the constant fundraising can prove to be taxing on the family at times, they have also drawn immense strength from it; ultimately helping them to cope. “I feel like because we’ve been so busy, we haven’t had enough time to cope with everything very well. However, I think that the fundraising is part of coping, giving us hope that we can provide a future for Sebastian,” said Jenn. So far, the family and Project Alive have helped raise over $400,000 for the $2.5M goal necessary to fund the clinical trial. With hopes of Sebastian’s story touching the hearts of millions one person at a time, the family continues to remain optimistic. Mario reflected positively as he stated, “1917 was the first year that a child was medically diagnosed with the disease, and our hope is that 2017 will be the year a cure is funded.” For more information on how you can donate and help save Sebastian Estevez’s life, please visit projectalive.org.

FAMILY HEALTH

Going back to school after summer vacation can be a difficult adjustment for some. Here are some tips for helping manage that back to school anxiety. • • • •

• • •

Get back into a routine by implementing bedtimes, meal planning, and setting out clothes the night the before. Don‘t wait for the last minute to do school supply and new clothes shopping. Arrange play dates with school friends. Research shows that the presence of familiar peers during school transitions can improve children’s academic and emotional adjustment. Have a trial run. If your child is starting at a new school, walk through the school with them before school starts to help get acquainted. Mapping out classrooms and finding lockers in advance can help an older child, and for younger kids it can be helpful to rehearse the drop off and spend time on the playground. Validate and acknowledge your child’s anxiety. Talk about their fears and feelings. Make plans and role play dealing with anxiety-inducing situations. Have your child act out the part of a strict teacher or bullying classmate, and then model appropriate responses. Help manage your children’s commitments. Taking on many extracurricular activities before the school year starts can become overwhelming.

magine being able to share your talent for a great cause. This past spring, many of Pioneer Middle School’s Advanced Art students had the chance to do just that when they collaborated to create under-the-sea decorations for prom night at The Quest, a school for students who have autism, or intellectual dis¬abilities. “My daughter approached me with the idea,” said Art teacher, Mr. Duhart. His daughter, Britnee Duhart, is an intern at The Quest and will be working with special needs students at Sawgrass Springs Middle School this fall. She brought up the idea of creating the decorations for the center’s prom. Duhart chose Kieran Kenig, Mackinzi Burgs, Jordan Clero, Cristina Caride, Yerin Kim, Amanda Gettys, Madison Valachovic, Melanie Galluzzi, and Karleigh

Miller to be part of the ‘under sea team.’ “I chose these particular students because of their combination of talent and efficiency,” said Duhart. The art students were very excited to help make The Quest’s dance more vibrant and colorful by using their talents to sketch, trace, and paint decorations. “Sharing my work with others is really cool because I can get back positive feedback to be a better painter in the future,” said Madison Valachovic. Ultimately, just as The Quest received awesome decorations for their prom, the ‘under sea team’ gained valuable experience that taught them how to work with others for a great cause.

with great pride that I welcome you to the 2017/18 school year. We are excited for the first day of classes on Monday, August 21, 2017. Our District’s commitment to excellence in education continues to make BCPS a national leader. In 2017, U.S. News & World Report ranked 19 of the District’s high schools among the best in the nation, and The Washington Post recognized 25 BCPS schools in its report on America’s Most Challenging High Schools. In addition, our District recently received two impressive designations. BCPS earned prestigious Districtwide re-accreditation from AdvancEd, signifying to the community that our District is meeting the highest standards in education. Our District was also named a Great District for Great Teachers by the National Council on Teacher Quality – a true testament to our amazing teachers and our dedication to providing students with high-quality instruction. Our innovative District schools offer incredible learning opportunities and focus on ensuring all students are college and career ready. BCPS offers a wide variety of programs to meet students’ interests and help them develop a lifelong love of learning. We are engaging students in ways that motivate them to learn and excel, with rigorous academic courses; award-winning magnet and innovative programs; dual language programs to promote biliteracy and academic achievement; and chess for second grade students to develop their critical thinking skills. We are reimagining education with an emphasis on offering a variety of academic enrichment programs and elective courses at every level. We know that technology is a critical part of 21st century learning. Our schools now have more computers and technology resources to support our students’ education. Through the District’s SMART bond technology initiative, more than 83,300 new computer devices are now installed in our schools, bringing the District’s student to computer ratio to an average of 2:1, an even lower ratio than the original goal of 3.5:1. The installation of the new computers was completed ahead of schedule and under budget – and the new computers are ready for students in 2017/18.

In the upcoming school year, BCPS continues to focus on technology in the classroom to support instruction. BCPS will: • Expand our Digital Classrooms initiative, which provides personalized, blended learning environments with a one-to-one student to computer ratio. Across BCPS, schools participating in this unique program will reach more students as the program grows to include additional grade levels and classrooms. • Increase the number of schools offering the Global Scholars program to 19 schools. This program connects BCPS students with their peers around the world as they share information and learn about cultures and important global issues. • Launch new opportunities for students to participate in computer science courses. Beginning this year, middle school students at 24 schools can now take a high school level computer science course through our partnership with Code.org. Computer science courses, curriculum and activities continue to be offered at 100 percent of our schools. BCPS also offers the largest debate and JROTC programs in the country; opportunities for students to earn industry certifications in numerous career industries; advanced academic programs allowing students to earn college credits; virtual education options; Montessori programs; and award-winning music and arts programs. Our schools also provide outstanding athletic programs, with sports expanding in our middle schools in 2017/18 to include golf and cross country. Our schools are preparing students for their futures and inspiring them to follow their dreams. As we look forward to the 2017/18 school year and beyond, I encourage you to learn more about our District – and all that our schools offer – by visiting our website, browardschools.com. On behalf of our teachers, administrators and staff, we hope students enjoyed the summer break and are ready for another successful school year! Thank you for partnering with us in your child’s education.

new school year is upon us; a new generation is about to stake its claim on history. The students who will fill our classrooms, play our fields, walk our sidewalks, ride our buses, frequent our restaurants and shop in our local stores will own this moment in time as “their time” forever. The shared experience of growing up in Cooper City in this moment (2017/2018) will be unique to them and it will tie them to one another for life. Once again, I celebrate the opportunity to be a part of this moment. I am honored to serve our students and to be among them as they serve others. I promise to do my best to be worthy of the privilege that it is to direct them, to protect them and to encourage them during this phase of their history in-the-making. Cooper City Schools remain a shining example of what is so great about Cooper City. Our kids continue to make the rest of us look good. Our public schools continue to be top-rated and our athletics departments and extracurricular clubs continue to churn out champions. It is the Cooper City home that produces the Cooper City student that puts the Cooper City team, the Cooper City school, and the Cooper City sports program on the map. The Cooper City High School 2017/2018 academic year has a lot to live up to after a banner 2016/2017 year. We will work hard to continue a successful tradition that has earned our 21st Golden School Award, and we will be striving for

our 22nd. CCHS is ranked #111 in the state and #1381 in the nation because we keep our standards high. Our students, their families and the entire community rise to the occasion every time. The stadium lights will soon be burning over the Cooper City High School football field to open the 2017/2018 football season. The homecoming game will be played on Friday, November 3rd at CCHS followed by the homecoming dance on Saturday, November 4th in the school’s cafeteria-turned-ballroom. As always, we encourage the entire community to come out for school events such as football games, band showcases, plays and musicals, debate competitions, charity drives, and all of our contests and activities. We partner with the City for many community events and actively participate in the Relay for Life, the Color Run, Founder’s Day, Feeding Children Everywhere, Christmas in July and most other city-sanctioned activities through our service and academic clubs like Math Club, Key Club, DECA, SGA, NHS, Debate Club, FEA and others. Visit www.coopercityhigh.net for details on times and locations of school-related events. Look for Cooper City events and programs in this publication and visit www. coopercityfl.org to view the Calendar of Events. It is my pleasure to serve this city at-large as your Commissioner. Thank you for having me.

ooper City High School’s girls varsity flag football team reinforced an important lesson this past season - never underestimate the underdogs. With a winning combination of experience, teamwork, and girl power, the Lady Cowboys came out leading the pack and advanced to the state finals for the first time in years. The team started the season off strong, keeping their determination to reach states in mind from the very beginning. Using the previous season’s shortcomings as opportunities to learn and improve, the girls practiced almost everyday after school and maintained an undefeated record for 11 games. “Our motto is today’s mistakes are tomorrow’s experience,” Head Coach Al Diliello said. “I think we gained a lot from last year’s mistakes.” As their goal began to dance within reach, the Lady Cowboys recognized that they could not let nervousness become an obstacle on their path to states. To stay calm and focused, the girls treated their most critical games as though they were any other, and listened to music and sang together beforehand to diffuse any pregame tension. “It was almost like they blocked out any of the noise that comes with the pressure of a game,” Diliello said. “I think our coaching staff was more nervous before a big game than the team was.” According to Diliello, the hard work, positive attitude, and careful strategy that characterizes the CCHS girls flag football team was nothing new. The key difference this year was simply experience, which the ten returning varsity members and four former junior varsity members brought to the table, setting an example for the incoming freshmen.

“The team was a year older and better understood our team philosophy,” Diliello said. “This made it easier to install new things to help us be successful. So I guess having a year of experience under our belt helped a lot.” Another difference in the team this year was sister duo Katie and Kimberly Slinkosky. Katie, a senior, led the team as captain, while Kimberly, a freshman, was a strong offensive player. Together, the girls and their team dominated district and regional games until they reached their long-awaited goal of becoming regional champions - securing them a spot in the state playoffs. “We were so proud of each other for having our best game of the season for our regional championship game,” Katie Slinkosky said. “When we won 38-0 it was such a rewarding feeling because each of us got to contribute in our own ways to help achieve what we thought was impossible.” On May 19th, the CCHS girls flag football team traveled to Gainesville to compete in the state semi-finals. Though they did not win their game, the girls were proud of how far they had come, ending the season with a 15-2 record. The following Monday, May 23d, the Lady Cowboys and their coaches were honored at the Cooper City commission meeting for their hard work and dedication. With city-wide support behind them, the team is looking toward next year to reach the top, using the lessons they learned to further improve. “Our coaching philosophy is pretty simple and we will probably tweak it some, but improving on the fundamentals is always something we will work on,” Diliello said. “Throwing, Catching and pulling flags is something every team can do better.”

SCHOOLS ontessori” is a word commonly tossed about in play groups, articles and educational circles. While the opinions about this learning style are strong on both sides, it is often difficult to pin down exactly what a Montessori program is. The simplest explanation is that the Montessori Method is a child-centered learning philosophy founded by Italian educator and doctor Maria Montessori in 1907. This learning style and the associated beliefs that children best acquire skills through undirected play with carefully selected objects and in designed environments has been interpreted and applied to Montessori preschools and school programs worldwide. The core belief in the Montessori Method is that children should and do learn best in real world environments, at their own pace and from a range of hands-on activities. In Montessori pre-schools, children are encouraged to explore their environment with teachers providing guidance and care rather than direct instruction. The child’s environment is structured to facilitate a lesson through a student’s independent activity and their trial and error. Due to the focus on independent mastery of life skills and real-world applications, Montessori classrooms can be ideal placement for students of all ability levels. Students typically form mixed age and/or mixed ability learning communities, where children are encouraged to work together and learn from each other as they practice and acquire new skills. These groupings allow children to master skills at their own unique pace without the pressures of direct competition with their peers.

Although most Montessori programs will adhere to these basic principles, every school will apply them differently. Visit any school you are interested in and observe the classroom your child will attend. The most important questions for any program are: Do you feel comfortable leaving your child with these teachers? Would your child enjoy this program and their schedule/routine? Is Montessori the right learning style for your family? Pine Island Montessori in Davie offers both a Montessori elementary program and a more traditional, Montessori influenced preschool. Their classrooms offer the unique opportunity for children to experience different learning styles within the same nurturing environment. For more information about Pine Island Montessori call 954-434-6337 visit pineislandmontessori.com or stop by their beautiful 5 acre campus at 5499 SW 82nd Ave. and ask for a tour.

T

he timing couldn’t be better for this laughout-loud book to hit the stores as the new school year begins! “Class Mom”, a novel by Laurie Gelman, will absolutely tickle the funny bone of any parent who has dabbled or immersed themselves in volunteering at their school. Filled with sarcasm, irreverence and hilarious casual commentary, you cannot put this book down. Gelman delivers a diverse cast of fictional characters, yet as their personalities and quirks unfold, you will identify each one with someone you know or perhaps catch a glimpse of yourself. A little over a year ago, Laurie was just finishing her second attempt at a novel when we had a chance to catch up. After many decades

of not seeing each other (we went to high school together), I was lucky enough for her to share her rough draft of “Class Mom” with the thought that I might be able to provide some constructive feedback. After breezing through it in a day, I just simply commented, “Hilarious!” Inspired by raising two daughters in New York City schools where volunteering is mandatory, Laurie found great humor in the idiosyncrasies of her co-volunteers, as well as herself, in these roles. Dealing with fundraisers, student allergies, cooperative communication with uncooperative volunteers, teachers, and a few surprises along the way keeps the main character, Jen Dixon, with plenty of material for comedy. Her humor,

sarcasm and ways of getting things done may be lost on the class parents, but definitely not on the readers. Jen’s “fresh” take on her Kindergarten class mom role is based on the fact that she already went through the parenting rodeo with her two daughters who are now in their 20’s. Flash forward 15 years, and now Jen has a 5-year old son, Max. You’ve got the gist, older moms see things a bit differently than younger, first-time moms. Look for Laurie Gelman on a “Class Mom” book tour and likely on a few talk shows, she’s got a connection or two hundred there (as you will see in About the Author). “Class Mom” was released on Amazon.com on August 1st and will surely be the buzz for all of us moms as school resumes.

HAND WRITE OR COMPUTER OR BOTH? I hand wrote for years and years, but now that I finally write on a computer, I can’t go back!

Davie / Cooper City / SW Ranches Sports & Activities Directory | Issue 20 | August - Oct o be r 2 017

Bergeron, worked on Good Morning America and the CBS Early Show. Working in the entertainment industry led Laurie to her husband, Michael Gelman, the executive producer of Live with Kelly and Ryan (originally Live with Regis and Kathie Lee). Laurie and Michael married in June, 2000, and have two daughters Jamie (age 16) and Misha (age 13). Once Laurie became a mom, she found a perfect fit to balance career and parenting on two separate Canadian-based talk shows, The Mom Show and Doctor in the House. Currently, she is a freelance writer and novelist while doing what she loves most, raising her daughters. They live in Manhattan and spend time in Plantation, Florida and The Hamptons, New York.

ANY ADVICE TO NEW MOM VOLUNTEERS? Take notes! It’s ripe with comedic possibilities. But seriously, definitely get involved, but have your boundaries in place. The PTA can smell new blood a mile away and they will suck you dry if you let them.

73

WHAT ARE YOUR PERSONAL HIGHLIGHTS? Hmm...easy...the birth of my girls, converting to Judaism, and taking a hard core, self defense class are the top three things I have ever done. WHAT DO YOU WANT YOUR READERS TO WALK AWAY WITH WHEN THEY FINISH “CLASS MOM”? A few laughs and the belief that I should win the Pulitzer Prize for humor! Actually, just a few laughs is good. WHEN DID THE INSPIRATION FOR THE BOOK COME ABOUT? ANY CATALYST THAT SAT YOU DOWN TO WRITE IT? After a failed attempt at a children’s book my agent suggested I write about the one thing I was constantly complaining about - my job as class mom for my daughter’s 3rd grade class. I didn’t realize how much I talked about it until he pointed it out.

WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE AND LEAST FAVORITE CHARACTER IN “CLASS MOM”? My most favorite character to write is Jen. Her inner dialogue is hilarious and she is flawed, but fun. My least favorite is Kim Fancy. She represents far too many mothers that I actually know and don’t admire.

AS FAR AS WRITING A NOVEL, IT SEEMS DAUNTING TO TAKE A STORY IDEA TO A PUBLISHED BOOK. DID YOU ENJOY THE PROCESS? They say the joy is in the journey and for me, it really was. Once I figured out that I was going to have to treat this like a job or I would never finish, it became as much a part of my day as making dinner or taking a shower. I knew that for better or worse I had to sit down for at least 2 hours every day and either write or rewrite. And just like any job, some days were good and some days were bad. It took about 2 years to write it and another year to make the changes the publisher wanted and have it transformed into a book. The hardest part was being told I had to add another plot line into my perfectly finished book. I tore my hair out for about 4 months trying to make that happen...and I finally did.

ARE YOU PLANNING ANY BOOK SIGNINGS OR INTERVIEWS? Book tour is coming - not sure where or when, but you can be damned sure I will be on at least one daytime talk show or there will be no joy in Gelmanville tonight.

WHAT VOLUNTEER ROLES IN YOUR KIDS’ SCHOOLS DID YOU ACTUALLY DO? Well, I was class mom for five years. I volunteered for the book fair a few years in a row. I was snack mom many, many times. I’ve sold sportswear at Homecoming, chaperoned numerous field trips and was co-chair of the school’s annual fund raiser... twice. Oh, I was also in charge of the 120 gifts for the 6th grade Greek Festival. ARE MORE BOOKS OF LIKE STYLE ROLLING AROUND IN YOUR HEAD? Actually, I’m writing the sequel to Class Mom right now (not that anyone has asked for it). I had more to say about my hero, Jen, and her life and wanted to get it down on paper. I had been writing a more serious book, but I took a break because it was really getting me down. Getting back to the “Class Mom” characters is like being at a reunion with old friends. HAVE YOUR KIDS READ THE BOOK? WHAT ARE THEIR COMMENTS? My older one, Jamie, read it and really loved it although I don’t think she understood many of the pop culture references (“Mom, who is Michael Hutchence?”). My younger one, Misha really wants to, but I’m holding her off for now. She doesn’t need to know how snarky I really am just yet. DID MICHAEL GIVE FEEDBACK DURING THE PROCESS? Michael never asked to read it until it was finished. When he did, his comment was, “This is actually really good.” High praise from Gelman. Since then he has been my number one PR agent. He talks about “Class Mom” to whoever will listen. Luckily, a lot of people listen to him.

aurie Hibberd Gelman was born in 1964 in Ottawa Canada, however, she was raised right here in the Plantation area and is an alumni of American Heritage School. After high school, she went to Ryerson University in Toronto and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. Laurie’s professional career started in broadcasting as a news writer, traffic reporter, entertainment reporter for CKFM radio in Toronto. In the early 90‘s, Laurie returned to South Florida; you may remember her as “The Buzz” entertainment reporter for WSVN-TV in Miami. As her career continued to blossom, she co-hosted the Fox After Breakfast talk show on Fox network with Tom

WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU ARE IN PLANTATION? Shop! I’m obsessed with Sawgrass. I get there right at 8am when Target opens, continue on to Starbucks and wait for Off Fifth to open. It’s my happy place. I also like to spin at Cycle Bar and head to Dania Beach sometimes. We love Anthony’s Pizza and the BBQ place formerly known as Scruby’s. WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES AND THINGS YOU DO IN YOUR DOWN TIME? I enjoy working out a lot. Its great thinking time and keeps me healthy. I spin, do pilates and yoga. I also live in one of the best walking cities in the world, so I do a lot of that, too. I enjoy reading when I’m not trying to write, and Michael and I collect wine. And who am I kidding? I Netflicks and chill all the time. My latest obsession is The Crown. WHAT ABOUT PLANTATION MAKES YOU WANT TO KEEP A HOME HERE? Plantation is amazing. It’s such a great community, no matter how big it gets. It brings back wonderful memories of my younger years. If I’m driving down Peters Rd. with my radio tuned to 80’s on 8, I can almost pretend I’m still in high school...almost. DO YOU WANT TO GIVE ANY PROPS TO AMERICAN HERITAGE OR TEACHERS? I actually loved my time at American Heritage. The school was small so the teachers really got to know all the students. Shout out to Mrs. Nocerini, Mrs. Israel, Coach Holmquist, Coach Murtha, Mrs. Cole and Doc Hrinko, may he rest in peace. TO WHOM IS YOUR BOOK DEDICATED? The book is dedicated to Michael and the girls because, let’s face it, if it weren’t for them, I would never have been a class mom.

EMBASSY CREEK STUDENTS FACE IMMIGRATION By Jennifer Arbelaez

ould you imagine “packing your life” in a suitcase to come to America for a better life? The Second Grade students at Embassy Creek Elementary, in collaboration with the Social Studies unit called “A Land of Immigrants” packed their suitcases, made passports, learned about their ancestry, and “immigrated” to America’s Ellis Island. They even learned about the PUSH or PULL factors, reasons why many people came to America. During the study, the students learned about their family and how, when, and why they may have come to America - where the streets were said to be “paved with gold”. The unit of study culminated in the kids’ participation in “Immigration Day 1904.” Parents, teachers, community members and administrators filled the “Great Hall” and worked as inspectors-checking for mental, medical, and legal problems, helping exchange money for American currency, checking passports, and ensuring that each “immigrant” was fit to enter America.

Some kids got “detained” and were asked more specific questions. It was amazing to witness the students wait in line and worry if they would actually pass the specific inspection. For example, at the mental station, students had to solve a puzzle and do addition flashcards within a short time frame. At the medical station, students had to walk a straight line, do an eye exam (like when they go to the eye doctor) and get a “lice” check. At the legal station (which is where many kids got “detained”) students had to give the date of birth of the immigrant they were dressed as, and provide information as to why they wanted to come to America. This was truly PROGRESS BASED LEARNING at its finest. Once the kids were cleared to exit Ellis Island, they recited the Pledge of Allegiance. We even had two students recite it in American Sign Language. It is sure to be an experience that the kids in second grade at Embassy Creek will never forget.

“When educating the minds of our youth, we must not forget to educate their hearts.” - Dalai Lama

T

his year, Flamingo Elementary, in partnership with the School Board of Broward County, became a pilot school for Social Emotional Learning (SEL). Time was set aside in each classroom to focus on enhancing the teaching of skills in the areas of self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, responsible decision-making, and relationship skills. From administration on down, the school focused on educating the hearts of their students. Teachers would read literature that related to a social emotional skill. Students had the opportunity to share their feelings either aloud with the class in a Morning Meeting or by writing a response on a Post-it on the board in the classroom. Students were also nominated by their teachers to wear special “Brag Tags” which showed to others in the building that they had displayed a social emotional skill. Classroom and hallway bulletin boards provided visual reminders for students about SEL. Each day teachers greeted their students at the door with one of the

three H’s: a high-five, a handshake, or a hug and at the end of each day students had a brief “clip conference” to review the ups and downs of the day with regards to their behavior. Students had the opportunity to participate in a social awareness activity by bringing in new and gently used shoes for an organization called “In Jacob’s Shoes” which benefits needy students in the community with backto-school shoes. While many of these skills have traditionally been taught at Flamingo, being a part of the pilot has opened our awareness to a variety of ways to enhance the teaching of the students so that they continue to develop the prosocial skills that will help shape their future. Everyone benefits from having a society of people who have self-awareness, are socially aware, can make responsible decisions, and have good relationship skills.

REENTREE PREP CHARTER (GTP), a SMALL but POWERFUL public charter school is moving to SW Ranches. GTP began operations on August 2014 and since then, it has received outstanding marks in education from the state. “The School’s commitment to help our students achieve excellence in academics and our teacher’s desire to teach above the standards, are our greatest assets. ” says E. Gonzalez, the school’s Director. After completing its first year as a high performing charter school, GREENTREE PREP received an honorable mention for ranking as TOP 3 schools in BROWARD COUNTY for Language Arts. Last year, Greentree Prep was recognized by Governor Rick Scott in the Top 10% category of high performing schools out of 3,265 schools in the State of Florida, was ranked TOP 6 school in Broward County and ranked 22nd out of 514 Charter schools in the state. This year, a large majority of our students in grades 3, 4 and 5, received perfect scores in the FSA. The school has a high percentage of High Achievers and Gifted Students, and though the school has almost doubled in size, the student population will stay less than 200, as only seen in private schools. The program was created to help students achieve more than the standards in academics. Each child is given individualized attention

and is encouraged to reach their highest potential. The Director of the school states: “We believe that every student is gifted and if given the proper tools and guidance, the student will gain confidence and set higher individual goals. All students attending GTP, will receive the benefit of learning in this type of environment at the school.” “We are very proud of our staff and students for always working beyond the standards. GTP is a powerful school with a strong focus on High Academics and Character Education. We enhanced the technological support programs by introducing many interactive activities that provide supplemental assistance and intervention to the students in all subject areas.” added Ms. Pou, Principal. The new facility is located in a 5 acre parcel and has amenities such as a swimming pool, soccer field, basketball courts, library and more. We look forward to another great year in our new facility and we invite you to visit our location and register your child at Greentree Prep Charter School, a free, public school of choice, with high academic standards for students who want to learn in a gifted environment. We are currently accepting applications for students in grades K-5. Contact 954-780-8733 or visit us at: www.greentreeprep.com

NOVA TAKES THE LEAD IN LITERACY I

n the field of education, the saying goes that every teacher is a literacy teacher. At Nova High School, that could not be truer. In fact, Nova has spent the last year creating and perfecting a school-wide literacy initiative aimed at infusing literacy into its curriculum and fostering a love of literacy throughout its school community. “Creating a culture where literacy is paramount provides limitless resources for our society to be successful. By providing multiple opportunities for our students to experience various genres of literature, we cultivate generations of critical thinkers. These students then will have the tools needed to be successful in life and become contributing members of our society,” said Laurel Bifora, Nova’s literacy coach. One of the ways that Nova infuses literacy throughout the curriculum is through its school-wide initiatives called TASK and Word of the Day. “TASK means Teaching Assessment Standards for Knowledge. This is where all instructors chose a current event article that coincides with their curricular objectives to enhance students’ literacy skills,” said Bifora. The initiatives are structured to excite students by linking the real world to learning while encouraging students to want to read more. In turn, students build literacy skills

By: Corinne Dannon

in all areas, even Physical Education. Another way Nova achieves its literacy goals is through the Word of the Day initiative aimed at strengthening students’ abilities to identify SAT and ACT vocabulary words and build their capacity for reading and comprehending. The school has also utilized online programs such as Vocabulary. com, Achieve3000, USATesprep, and Khan Academy to help students achieve success in the area of literacy. In fact, Nova ranked 13th overall in the nation out of 38,000 schools on Vocabulary.com for mastery of words, and was a top 10 Florida school in Vocabulary Bowl for the month of May. The initial results of these programs are proving to have a positive impact with Nova’s students. Preliminary test score results from the 2016-2017 English Language Arts FSA & FSAA exams showed a 10% increase in proficiency, from 63% in 2015 to 73% in 2016 overall; an increase administrators are directly attributing to the new literacy initiatives. “Our curriculum initiatives and their success speak for themselves. We have been awarded 11 “A” letter grades the past 12 years, and 13 “A” letter grades in the past 15 years. No other traditional high school has had this kind of success,” said Principal Dr. John LaCasse.
