Dear Readers,

A very Happy New Year to you AND a Happy Valentine’s Day! Here’s a little challenge for you, something most mothers (and fathers) rarely, if ever, do...give yourself your own Valentine’s Day gift. Love yourself first. Sound a little hoakie to you? Let’s get real! Every minute of every day of every year, we give the gifts of love, security, confidence, support, strength and nurturing to our families. As a parent, we never put ourselves first, or second, or third; we are always last. Yet, it is the single most important gift you can give anyone. Stop beating yourself up for not being everything to everyone all the time and for not being perfect. You are perfect, perfectly you. Your children look to you as their role models. What does it say to them if you don’t love yourself first? If you don’t make yourself a priority and do what needs to be done so that you are happy, first and foremost, you set an impactful example. We are not perfect at everything all the time and that’s life...messy, unpredictable and flawed. Most things that go awry in our day to day are because we are constantly multi-tasking; giving nothing our full attention at any given time. Set time aside for yourself everyday to do something that makes YOU happy, and therefore, more productive in the important parts of your life. Children need to see you that can laugh at yourself, your imperfections and errors. They need to see that life goes on and everything does not follow a script. You don’t have to be the best parent, the most fit or beautiful, or the most successful. However, you should exude confidence in that you love that about yourself. If you need “you” time...take it! Take the time in a nap, a walk, a bath, in a friends night or class or activity that makes YOU happy. The happier you are, the better role model you become and happier and healthier the family becomes. As an empty-nester now, I can look back without regret and know that my tennis time, girlfriend time, activities, volunteerism, and my quiet time all balanced me to be a happier and more confident person. Guess what? Sometimes I got it wrong, but we all survived, and perhaps thrived, because I screwed something up and fixed it the best I knew how. Not everything is about the family and kids; sometimes it needs to be just about you so you can be a happier, more confident person. So this issue is about Spring (and soon to be Summer), so give yourself a rebirth and love yourself unconditionally. In that gift to yourself, you will find the love grows exponentially into your family and sets the right foundation for your children. Truly, the most beautiful thing in a person is the love of self and the confidence that goes along with that. As we near 15 years of publishing, thank you for being a reader and/or client and user of this fun and informative publication. Please remember that the only way we can continue to publish and give to our schools, clubs & organizations is because of our advertisers. If I may ask for a gift from all of you on this Valentine’s Day, PLEASE let our business advertisers know that you saw them in the Sports & Activities Directory! With love, laughter and imperfection, my best to you,

Margot

POPULAR NORTHEAST FITNESS CONCEPT FLEXES FOOTPRINT TO SOUTHEAST FLORIDA WITH FIRST GYM IN COOPER CITY

R

etro Fitness, one of the nation’s leading low-cost, high-value fitness concepts, recently opened its newest Florida location at 9900 Griffin Road in Cooper City. The new gym joins seven other Florida Retro Fitness locations and is the first club to open in the Southeastern part of the state. With an affordable monthly membership starting at $19.99, Retro Fitness gym members have access to a full collection of top-of-the line strength equipment and cardio machines. “We opened Retro Fitness to provide the community with a facility that will help them achieve their health and fitness goals at a fraction of the cost, but without skimping out on the necessities needed for a good workout,” said Mike Saunders, co-owner and operator of the new Retro Fitness in Cooper City. “Retro Fitness offers a clean and welcoming environment for every member to achieve success without feeling intimidated or overwhelmed – no matter their fitness level.” The Cooper City gym is among the first Retro Fitness locations to integrate Retro Results – powered by the New Exercise Order. This multi-level personal training program provides a solution to members of any fitness level or with any desired price point. The training tiers are comprised of Team Conditioning (TEAM), Small Group Strength Training (SGST) and One on One Training (1:1). All levels of training will incorporate MYZONE technology, which displays real time heart rates, calories, and effort data on large screen TVs inside the gym. This technology will ‘gamify’ the workout experience, encouraging members to

perform to the best of their abilities and push themselves to new limits. In addition to Retro Results, the 23,000 square-foot gym offers a variety of calorie-burning group fitness classes – such as spin, Zumba, kickboxing, yoga and more – in its three dedicated group fitness, spin and boxing rooms. The facility also includes the latest in circuit and weight training equipment, certified personal trainers and cardio machines with personal flat-screen TVs & iPod hook ups. The gym is equipped with full-service locker rooms, a supervised children’s playroom, the latest in tanning technology, a full-service pro-shop and a Retro Blends Smoothie Bar. Members can also keep track of their fitness goals with the free Retro Fitness mobile app. Plus, unlike most local gyms, the new Retro Fitness also features several pieces of Hammer Strength fitness equipment and a large turf field. “Our goal is to provide the community with a gym experience unlike anywhere else – we’re a fun place to work out, we’re friendly, and we’re affordable,” Saunders added. “Members can change their lives for less than 75 cents a day – you can’t beat that price with our amenities.” Retro Fitness Cooper City will be open Monday through Thursday from 5am to 11pm, Friday from 5am to 10pm, Saturday from 7am to 8pm and Sunday from 7am to 7pm. For more information please call Retro Fitness of Cooper City at (954) 590-0496 or visit http://retrofitness.com/location/coopercityfl/.

AROUND TOWN

TOURISTS AND THE EAST COAST GREENWAY As a continuous long-distance route, the Greenway is a new tourism venue, enticing domestic and foreign tourists to explore the Eastern Seaboard in a leisurely and intimate manner. The ECG offers muscle-powered users a way to see this most urbanized and historical of American corridors. Our wayfinding tools – ECG signage, maps, and guides – help tourists navigate the route. ECG tourism has an increasingly significant impact on local economies. THE EAST COAST GREENWAY AND LOCAL USE The Greenway also has an important local role, serving as a close-to-home facility for the 45 million people who live within

the ECG’s home counties. For them, the trail functions as a kind of Central Park for the region. For many, just out their back door, the Greenway is a safe place to walk, jog, bicycle, skate, ski, horseback ride, bird watch, fish, push the baby carriage or just stroll with friends. The Greenway can provide an escape, a tranquil place for some quiet time alone. Children can use it to walk to school or get to the park, adults can commute to work, and everyone will find it a well-located spot for an hour of exercise or a weekend outing.

the communities it passes through and to the people who use it. A national recreational resource, the ECG can enhance the local economic value of local trail segments by bringing new users with their wallets to local communities. The East Coast Greenway Alliance joins local trail to local trail, initially through on-road connections and ultimately through the construction of additional off-road trails. The Greenway serves as a spine route, linking with other long distance trails, like the coastto-coast American Discovery Trail, the Hudson River Greenway, and the C&O Canal National Park, helping to create an interlinked national trail system. It connects city to city, city to suburb, and suburb to rural area. The Greenway links together such key sites as state capitals, college campuses, local, state, and national park systems, and outstanding cultural, historical, and natural landmarks offering themed travel possibilities. Almost a third of the Greenway is now in place as an off-road route on traffic-free trail segments (834 miles or 29%). A complete travel route composed of carefully chosen and field-checked on-road linkages is defined and mapped, allowing experienced cyclists to use the entire route today. Maps and cue sheets for the entire route are available, and they are posting trail markers to ease the wayfinding process. Users of all abilities experience the Greenway today on the more than 100 completed trail sections located in each of the 15 states and DC along the Greenway corridor.

AROUND TOWN

A RECREATIONAL ROUTE WITH UNIVERSAL APPEAL People of all ages and abilities enjoy ECG trails, such as the Route 9A Bike/Ped Path in NYC, for recreation, exercise, commuting, running errands, and more. The Greenway is not designed for those seeking a high-speed cycling route. A multitude of on-road routes better serve their needs. But, as a traffic-free, relatively flat route, the Greenway is a safe facility for people of all ages and physical abilities, including children, families, and the elderly. Being almost entirely on public right-of-way, the ECG is accessible to all. It offers a transportation alternative for those whose independence is compromised in our car-dependent culture: children, people with disabilities, the elderly, and people who do not own a car. In addition, the Greenway is easily accessible in many areas via public transportation, and a growing network of trails and bicycle routes along the coast enable easy access for much of the region. Winding from city to city through urban centers, urban neighborhoods, suburban communities, and rural areas, users come from all of these populations. Urban dwellers in particular, distant from traditional back-country trails, value this public open space that provides a convenient place for recreation and a means to get away to the country without car dependence. The Greenway goes directly through many underserved urban neighborhoods, providing sorely needed access and recreational opportunities for people in these communities. To find out which sections of the Greenway are currently appropriate for various types of users, visit the trip planner on the website. The East Coast Greenway is the backbone of an emerging network of trails along the eastern seaboard that can contribute, both actually and symbolically, to priorities, including: • Improving public health by empowering active transportation and safe recreation • Lowering pollution by substituting car trips with bicycling and walking • Providing greenway construction & maintenance jobs • Increasing transportation options • Giving non-drivers, such as children, the elderly, and people without cars, more independence • Reducing roadway congestion • Enhancing local economic development • Connecting people and communities • Helping to create new and inviting public spaces for everyone to enjoy • Raising land and home values within the greenway corridor The ECG provides a way for non-motorized travelers to move safely from town to town, where they would otherwise have to use a car or travel on an unsafe road. Here, cyclists cross the Calhoun Street Bridge from Trenton, NJ to Morrisville,, PA, safely separated from road traffic. Multi-use trail development is moving ahead fulltilt all across the United States where opportunities to restore public access to our rivers and waterfronts, to convert abandoned rail lines to new uses, and to make our communities more bicycle- and pedestrian-friendly have generated strong public involvement. Citizens recognize that trails can become an integral part of local transportation systems, provide recreational outlets for all age groups, and help promote healthier lifestyles. The East Coast Greenway, with the allure of a longdistance route, can help move local trail projects that play into its corridor ahead. Linking these discrete local trails into a continuous route reaching from Maine to Florida is a challenge of major proportions, but with enormous value to

DESIGNATED TRAIL LIST

There are over 100 trails designated as East Coast Greenway, many of which have been signed with ECG trail markers. View a list of the designated trails and signed trails on the website. The State of the Trail Report lists East Coast Greenway progress in each region.

ECG INFORMATIONAL KIOSKS

Informational kiosks such as this one in Brunswick, Maine, display information about the ECG and state Mile Sponsor inscriptions. ECG Kiosks are located in many states listed on our website. Eventually kiosks will provide maps and information in each state along the Greenway. The kiosks display the inscriptions of the state’s Mile Sponsors. Learn more about Mile Sponsor program on the website.

EAST COAST GREENWAY IN FLORIDA

The East Coast Greenway through Florida juxtaposes conquistadors and astronauts, engagement and escape. It threads it way across nearly 600 miles between worldly cities and wildflower byways. Florida boasts the longest portion of Greenway with the most miles of completed trail. North to south, the Greenway enters the state at Fernandina Beach then continues to Key West, the United States’ southernmost mainland point. The Greenway travels largely along the coast, through seaside villages, America’s earliest historic sites, through vast nature preserves, and major cities that include Jacksonville and Miami. The route includes 229 miles of completed traffic-free paths and the most bridges of any ECG state. Much of the Greenway through Florida is on wide sidepath that runs along Highway A1A. It concludes with the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail, which hops from island to island for 106 miles (about half of which is completed trail). The Alliance plans an additional loop route that will provide access to Florida’s Gulf Coast, the Pinellas Trail, and Lake Okeechobee. As of early-2016, 31% of the Florida route is completed trail, 13% is in development, 38% is in public control and awaiting development, and 18% is considered “gap”where the route location has not yet been found. The ECGA is at work with regional and county planning agencies, trail developers, developments of regional impact, and trail advocates all along the coast to advance the Greenway, and as a result, progress is steady. A Florida ECG State Committee is now forming. a Florida Committee is now forming. For information or to participate, please contact Herb Hiller at herbhiller12@gmail.com, or (386) 547-0496. T

he East Coast Greenway (ECG) is a developing biking trail system, linking many of the major cities of the Eastern Seaboard between Canada and Key West. Over 30 percent of the route is already on traffic-free greenways, creating safe, accessible routes for people of all ages and abilities. The remainder is in progress with hopes of completion by 2020. The ECG fosters healthy lifestyles, empowers sustainable transportation, and promotes tourism. The East Coast Greenway is 2900 miles long, stretching through cities, suburbs, and rural areas from Calais, Maine to Key West, Florida. The goal is for the entire Greenway to be on paths, completely separated from the road. About 30% of the route is currently on local, traffic-free, firm-surfaced trails that are safe for all abilities. The remainder is comprised of interim on-road sections that link completed trails together, and occasional ferries and trains where there is currently no safe on- or off-road option.

ebbie Zelman was 40 years old in April 2008, when she learned she had stage IV stomach cancer that was inoperable and incurable, and that her chances of being alive in five years were less than 5%. The mother of three children turned her personal challenge into a positive force to create a better future for people diagnosed with stomach cancer, which she continues to do today. Her three children vowed to do the same and have carved their own paths within the organization by starting Debbie’s Dream Clubs at their schools. Their efforts caught on quickly and now there are Debbie’s Dream Clubs at seven different schools. “Children are the future, so educating children about an issue has a tremendous impact,” said Zelman. “It has an even greater impact when children educate other children about an issue.” Her twins, Rachel and Zachary Guttman, who are now in college, started the first DDF school club at NSU University School Middle School when they entered sixth grade. Three years later, they started another DDF school club at the High School. Her youngest daughter, Sarah, started a DDF club in the Lower School. “I got involved in Debbie’s Dream Foundation because my mother was diagnosed with stomach cancer when I was only three years old,” said Sarah, 11. “When I got a little older, I realized that some diseases have cures and lots of people are working on them, but that stomach cancer didn’t have a cure or many treatment options and wasn’t recognized enough. DDF is a wonderful foundation that helps people with stomach cancer have better lives.” There are currently clubs at University Middle School, University Upper School, Western High School, Cooper City High School, Cypress Bay High School, William T. Dwyer High School, and Jupiter High School. Each club has 20 to 60 members that raise between $200 and $2,000 per year. The school clubs hold their own activities which have included selling Santa hats, fruit, and merchandise; goldfish cracker eating contests; restaurant nights; candy cane collections; gift and toy drives; jeans days; card making; periwinkle power days; bookmark making and much more. One of the most powerful events is Be Bold Be Bald, when students decorate a cap and wear it all day in honor of someone battling or in memory of someone who lost their battle to cancer. Although the kids are all at different schools, they are all working toward the same common

goal of helping patients, raising awareness, and raising funds for stomach cancer research. The presidents and vice presidents of each of the seven clubs are members of Debbie’s Dream Youth Leadership Council (YLC), which oversees all of the DDF school clubs and also cultivates new clubs. The YLC meets monthly to plan upcoming events, which have included nights at restaurants and yogurt places, car washes, merchandise sales, and a 5k run. They also utilize the meetings to discuss such issues as the best way to keep in touch with each other, the best way to communicate with the members of their school clubs, free websites for making flyers, and many more issues they all have in common. After the meetings, these leaders then take their ideas back to their school clubs and share them. “The meetings are full of enthusiasm, idea sharing and educating each other about what works and what doesn’t work,” said Zelman. “It is inspiring to watch these kids in action.” Daniela Schwartz is YLC co-president and president of the Cypress Bay High School Debbie’s Dream Club. “Working together, even though we attend different schools, we are able to help one another in fundraising events, volunteering events, and most importantly to help spread awareness together,” said Daniela. “I am so lucky to be able to work and meet monthly with the YLC members to help make a difference in our community!” Brittany Gendler is YLC co-president and president of the Western High School Debbie’s Dream Club. “I am so proud to be a part of this great group of students that are doing their part to help create awareness and raise funds to fight stomach cancer, one of the most underfunded forms of cancer that exists,” said Brittany. “Together we are making a difference!” Debbie’s Dream Foundation: Curing Stomach Cancer (DDF) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness about stomach cancer, advancing funding for research, and providing education and support internationally to patients, families, and caregivers. Considered a “Super Survivor,” Debbie Zelman is still receiving chemotherapy eight and a half years later and is thrilled to be able to watch her three children grow up. The Foundation has several events in the next few months. They include: Fort Lauderdale A1A Marathon and Half Marathon (February 19), FREE Stomach Cancer Education Symposium (April 29) and Dream Makers Gala (April 29). For information on joining or starting a club, send an email to comunications@DebbiesDream.org or call 954-475-1200. For information on Debbie’s Dream Foundation, visit www.DebbiesDream.org.

or over 18 years, Alex Othon has been running winter, spring and summer baseball camps in the City of Pembroke Pines. He recently took a brief hiatus from the sport to focus his efforts on golf. He organized the first annual golf tournament to benefit the Sara Othon Foundation. Proceeds will be donated to the South Florida Chapter of Scleroderma Foundation. Scleroderma, or systemic sclerosis, is a chronic connective tissue disease generally classified as one of the autoimmune rheumatic diseases. Although the disease varies from patient to patient, one of the most visible manifestations of the disease is hardening of the skin. It is not contagious, infectious, cancerous or malignant. The South Florida Chapter of Scleroderma Foundation is dedicated to helping patients and their families cope with scleroderma; promoting public awareness and education; and stimulating and supporting research to help find a cure. Alex’s wife was diagnosed with Scleroderma at the age of 35 and has been battling the disease for over nine years. She worked as a teacher, but had to resign last year as a result of the disease. “Most people have never heard of Scleroderma,” said Sara. “With every passing day, I try to educate more and more people about Scleroderma. The devastating disease affects anything you can think of. It changes your physical appearance, limits your movement, deforms your hands and affects your organs. In my case, it has affected my lungs and caused pulmonary hypertension, which overworks your heart.” Sara says, however, that she tries to stay focused on the

positive. “Knowing things can change from one moment to the next, I choose to live my life positively and full of happiness,” said Sara. “So many people overlook all the blessings they have, but I have learned what is truly important in life. I thank God every day for my beautiful family – my three girls and incredible husband. People tell me that I am a strong person. Little do they know that my family is my source of strength!” In August 2016, Alex formed the Sara Othon Foundation to help raise funds for the South Florida Chapter of Scleroderma Foundation on behalf of his wife. Held at Grand Palms Resort in Pembroke Pines, the inaugural tournament was a huge success and raised over $10,000. The tournament included 103 golfers, as well as approximately 50 people who attended to help organize the event or just show support. There was a silent auction, raffles, food, drink and more. Team Deno won the tournament. Alex has already started planning for next year’s tournament. “There is currently no cure for Scleroderma, so we live one day at a time,” said Alex. “The disease has changed our outlook in life. We stick to the simple things and don’t worry about what we don’t have. The disease has progressed throughout the years, but we keep on fighting. We have three girls and Sara fights every day to see them grow up.” For information on next year’s golf tournament, call Alex Othon at 305-467-6850.

PUTTING THE PLAY IN ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT

lay10 Academy is a youth sports organization that targets the initial stages of long-term athlete development. Our philosophy revolves around fun, empowerment, experimentation, and positive reinforcement. In one word, PLAY! We believe that the root of PASSION lies within PLAY! The PLAY10 philosophy is built around 3 elements. The first element is “PLAY.” Play is defined as “kids being in control.” In our current youth sports environment, there is very little PLAY. The adults are the ones that are in control. They set up the drills, activities, exercises, and do all the screaming. If a player shows the slightest deviance from the structure, that player usually ends up doing laps for punishment. If you listen to interviews from many of the top athletes in the world, they will tell you about their experience with “PLAY” and how it helped mold them into the person and athlete they are today. A successful athlete cannot develop from a “PLAY” or “Structure” environment alone. The player must have a balance of both in order to reach the highest levels. We want to fill the “PLAY” void we see in the early stages of youth development. The second element we focus on is “Movement.” Through research, we have learned that the organization of the brain in young children is a result of movement. When our children are very young and crawling, we seem to be in a rush to get them to walk. Through research we know that crawling allows the child to gain control of cognitive processes such as comprehension, concentration, and memory, all very important for future learning. Therefore, no need to rush the process. At Play10 we introduce the young players to agility, balance, and coordination through age appropriate activities. We put them through a variety of movements to help organize the brain. For example, performing cross-lateral movements such as patting your head and rubbing your belly. These types movements improve the communication between both sides of the brain. The last element we consider a growing problem in youth sports is early specialization. A large percentage of injuries seen at the older youth stages are a result of overuse. Players are using the same movements over a long period of time. Eventually, the knee or the shoulder, or the arm gives. At Play10, we believe the

players should be introduced to a variety of movements that will create a foundation for future athlete success. Although we are geared more toward the sport of soccer, we introduce movement you would use in a variety of sports. Our objective is to expose the players to the movement and through play and repetition, their bodies become multi lateral and well balanced. At Play10, we believe in long-term athlete development and our objective is to establish the foundation of that process through Play and through youth development research and initiatives. We take pride in educating our coaching staff and building working relationships with the top youth development academies around the world in order to provide a safe and positive learning experience for the players in our program. If we can plant the seed of PASSION, with a little side of patience and education, our players will go a long way in life and on the field. welve-year-old Tyler Zager is already considered one of the best chefs in the country and the Weston resident has not even graduated from middle school. He recently appeared on Food Network’s Kids BBQ Championship, where he battled seven other contestants to determine the best kid grill master. He won the $20,000 grand prize and a feature in Food Network Magazine. The young chef hopes to be the next Bobby Flay and have his own cooking show one day. Tyler applied online to earn a spot on the Kids BBQ Championship. After he had several interviews to talk about himself and discuss his cooking, he was selected to compete on the show. To prepare, he tested all of his recipes multiple times until he knew them well. “I never expected to win,” said Tyler. “I just wanted to have a good time.” During the six episodes, which had nine rounds, Tyler participated in a series of timed challenges that included themes like Hawaiian luau and cowboy campfire. He was judged by some of the biggest names in barbeque, such as Tim Love and Graham Elliot. Tyler’s dishes included the following: • Episode 1 – Mustard Herb Chicken, Spicy Carolina Chicken Wings, Mac & Cheese • Episode 2 – Miami “HOT” Dog, Stuffed Bison Burger, Potato Slices, Herb Buttered Corn • Episode 3 – Pork Slider, Mahi Mahi Tacos, Grilled Starfruit and Pineapple • Episode 4 – Shrimp Po’ Boy, Dessert Pizza • Episode 5 – Cinnamon Toast Crunch French Toast, Porterhouse Steak, Chili, Fresh Cornbread • Episode 6 – Chicken, Ribs, Brisket, Grilled Watermelon “The Hawaiian episode was the hardest for me, because I didn’t know what was normal for them and how to really cook that style,” said Tyler. “I was so nervous in the last round, considering I knew how good my fellow competitor’s food was.” Tyler says it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. He plans to use the $20,000 prize to go to culinary school. “The highlight was the entire experience and learning how the entertainment industry works,” said Tyler. “It was so exciting to meet all of these great chefs. Graham Elliot was my favorite, because I know him the best and I know that he really knows his food.” Tyler has been passionate about cooking since he started baking with his grandmother on the weekends at age seven. Then he started helping his mom cook dinner and took over in the kitchen. He creates many of his recipes by experimenting with different ingredients. He also edits recipes from the Internet or gets them from other family members. He always prefers to cook with fresh ingredients. “Fresh ingredients add lots of flavor to your dish compared to non-fresh ingredients,” said Tyler. “They also add great color.” Although he cooks different styles and uses a variety of techniques, he loves to grill. His favorite food to make is garlic butter steak, because it is easy to make and has a lot of flavor. “I love how in grilling you get to actually see the food cook unlike most cooking ways,” said Tyler. “Also, I like to hear the food sizzle and see the flame cook it. The secret to cooking/grilling well is to always cook your meat to the right temperature.” Tyler was recently on SOFLO Taste with Michelle Bernstein on local Channel 10, where he made his grandmother’s famous sugar cookies. He was featured in Family Circle Magazine’s December 2015 issue. He was also on an episode of the Beat Bobby Flay Show, as part of the Kids Take Over episodes, where he served as a host with Sunny Anderson of The Kitchen. This was especially exciting for Tyler, since Bobby Flay is the chef he admires most. When Tyler is not cooking, attending NSU University School, or with his friends, he often spends his time volunteering. He sells baked goods and cookie kits at local farmer’s markets to help raise money for No Kid Hungry. He was one of the top five individual donors in 2016. Over the last eight months alone, he raised over $3,000 for the organization. He was named a bake sale hero and will be featured on some of their promotional material in 2017. “The proceeds go to kids in the U.S. who can’t afford food,” said Tyler. “This is important, because I know how I would feel without food. It feels amazing to be a bake sale hero knowing that I am doing a lot to help end childhood hunger in the U.S.” To learn more about Tyler, visit www.tylerzager.com.

many people associate orthodontic treatment with adolescence, Dr. Albert Lucas, says that orthodontists can spot subtle problems with jaw growth or with the teeth much earlier, while the primary or “baby” teeth are present. Parents may incorrectly assume they must wait until a child has all of his or her permanent teeth. However, Dr. Lucas and the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommend that every child get check-up with an orthodontist no later than age 7. “I can’t emphasize how important it is that parents understand the value of an orthodontic check-up,” says Dr. Lucas. “By age 7, enough permanent teeth have arrived for an orthodontist to evaluate the “bite” – the manner in which teeth and jaws meet and work, and how that relationship affects a child’s ability to bite, chew and speak effectively. Orthodontists can determine what, if anything, is awry. “A visit to the orthodontist can ease a parent’s mind, too,” notes Dr. Lucas. “Our recommendation may simply be ‘let’s wait and see’ while the face and jaws continue to grow.”

Some of the more readily apparent conditions that indicate the need for an examination include: • Early or late loss of baby teeth • Difficulty in chewing or biting • Mouth breathing • Thumb sucking • C r o w d i n g , m i s p l a c e d o r blocked-out teeth • Jaws that shift or make sounds • Speech difficulties • Biting the cheek or the roof of the mouth • Teeth that meet abnormally, or don’t meet at all • Facial imbalance • Jaws that are too far forward or back • Grinding or clenching of the teeth D r. L u c a s n o t e s t h a t protrusive front teeth can be prone to injury. For more information, v i s i t D r. L u c a s w e b s i t e , www.lucasorthodontics.com, or call (954) 432-7223 or (954) 475-1177. Find Dr. Lucas on Facebook at www.facebook. com/dralbertlucas.

Dr. Lucas has been an orthodontist for 24 years, and has practiced in Pembroke Pines and Plantation area since 1994. Dr. Lucas graduated from University of Florida School of Dentistry and completed an additional two year, advanced educational program in orthodontics at New York University Residency Program. Dr. Lucas is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), which has 18,000 members in the United States, Canada and abroad. Orthodontists are uniquely qualified specialists who correct improperly aligned teeth and jaws (bad bites). They receive an additional two to three years of specialized education beyond dental school to learn the proper way to align and straighten teeth. Only those with this formal education may call themselves “orthodontists,” and only orthodontists are eligible for membership in the AAO.

I

became a special needs mom at the same time I became a mom. It hit me hard, fast, and unforgivingly. My daughter, Sienna, was only four weeks old and coming off of the ventilator following open heart surgery when the geneticist delivered the news to her bedside. Hearing the words, “Smith-Magenis Syndrome” for the first time and then looking at my daughter lying there on the hospital bed, still so tiny, fragile, and new to the world, I could not begin to wrap my brain around how quickly our lives had just changed. Smith-Magenis Syndrome (SMS) is a microdeletion on the 17th chromosome that results in many complex, lifelong issues. As I began to research this rare disorder, I found websites and chat rooms describing, in grave detail, who she would become in the years ahead. Not a shred of it sounded hopeful. Horrific genetic character traits were bullet-pointed as casually as a grocery store list: Self-Injury, Aggression, Prolonged Meltdowns, Significant Sleep Disturbance, Intellectual Disability, Global Developmental Delay. It was a nightmare rapidly becoming my new reality. I was devastated and deeply depressed for several months following her diagnosis. But, as she grew, her personality emerged. She was sweet and magnetic. Her eye contact was intense, like she could see straight through to your soul. She was loving and happy. She began to hit her milestones and show progress in her development. Sienna showed us that she has a gift for drawing people in and disarming everyone she meets. Nothing brings her more joy than connecting with people. So, with time, we became less fearful of her diagnosis, and more determined to help her and other individuals with Smith-Magenis Syndrome. We were fortunate enough to meet another family, the Iannuzzi’s from Connecticut, who also have a daughter with SMS the same age as Sienna. Together, with this family, we started the SMS Research Foundation in 2010. We wanted to be a beacon of light for other families who got this diagnosis and felt as afraid

and alone as we did. It has been our mission to bring hope through research – research that is focused on finding answers that will one day lead us to therapeutic interventions that will improve the lives of individuals with Smith-Magenis Syndrome and their families. To date, we have invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in a team at the Baylor College of Medicine researching Smith-Magenis Syndrome and the critical genes involved. Our latest endeavor is a $600,000 two-year gene therapy project and partnership with Sanofi, a major pharmaceutical company. This is a very promising direction for the research we support that could potentially replace or mimic the missing critical gene, thanks to the donors who believe in our cause. We have no doubt that, with time and funding, we will make a significant impact on the prognosis of SMS. Smith-Magenis Syndrome is an extremely difficult disorder. Sienna is ten now, and while she has made amazing progress in so many areas, we do still have to battle and manage many of the behaviors we had read about. She requires constant supervision and the unpredictability of the meltdowns can make even the most mundane of daily tasks a challenge. It is not an easy life, but we are thankful for the families with whom we have connected in both the SMS and special needs communities. Connecting with others who are in similar situations as us really helps to normalize our experience. These communities have become our lifelines when we need to vent or problem-solve. Also, knowing that we are making a huge contribution with regards to SMS research has given this syndrome meaning and purpose in our lives. Our involvement in the SMS Research Foundation has helped bring hope to so many families, including our own. If you are interested in learning more about Smith-Magenis Syndrome and the SMS Research Foundation or you would like to help us advance research of SMS, please visit www.smsresearchfoundation.org. n her 2014 book, Cut Adrift: Families in Insecure Times, Marianne Cooper, a Stanford sociologist, uses the phrase “doing security.” In what originally began as a study on how the changing economy and recent recession have magnified the divide between the haves and have-nots, Cooper discovered the turmoil has affected all economic levels. Everyone is stressed, just not about the same things. From this finding, Cooper set about learning how households at different economic levels “do security,” i.e. how they attempt to either establish or regain some financial stability. Cooper found an interesting divide. The lower end of the economic demographic primarily does security by “downscaling.” They lower their expectations, make light of their difficulties, and in some cases, simply stop dealing with things they can’t handle. In contrast, Cooper’s upper class subjects tended to do security by obsessing over it. Couples increase their accumulation goals, upgrade their children’s education, and put more into their careers. Straddling the fence between resignation and obsession is the middle class, particularly the upper middle class. These households waver between lowering expectations and ramping up efforts to earn more, save more, and push/support their children toward a higher, more secure rung on the economic ladder. Carter Ruml, a Kentucky attorney specializing in estate planning, wrote in June 2015 about Cooper’s thesis, and what, based on his experience, he saw as the primary “doing security” concerns of the upper middle class. In short, he feels doing security for the middle class consists of managing risk. Most significant are the risks of: An unplanned early retirement, A long-term care event, and Unexpected longevity.

Ruml expands on this conclusion, saying this class of Americans is “Still building wealth, but doesn’t yet have a capital base larger than what they might realistically need for themselves. Nonetheless, as life expectancy increases, children and grandchildren need to be launched in life while parents are still living…if any one of these risk events occurs, it can dramatically transform a family’s balance sheet.” The attorney then provides some mathematical modeling of each of these events impacting the finances of a fictitious character named “Upper Middle Class Henry.” Most of these scenarios involve hard choices, like deciding between conserving assets for a long life and gifting to his adult children. Ruml’s observations and calculations indicate many upper middle class Americans are at a financial threshold. If everything goes according to plan, they may achieve financial security. But it wouldn’t take much for one risk event to force them to “downscale” their future. What’s striking is the ongoing desirability, if not need, for life insurance. In order to maintain a level of financial security, Ruml’s models call for lifestyle reductions from 24 percent for longevity risk, to 49 percent because of an early unplanned retirement. As a permission slip to spend other assets, a source of supplementary funds for long-term care, or tax-free inheritance, it’s possible to see that properly positioned life insurance could greatly ease Henry’s security issues. For several decades, conventional wisdom held life insurance was something the upper middle class wouldn’t need in retirement. The uncertainty of changing times is altering that belief.

ENCOURAGING OUR KIDS TO EXPERIENCE By Jodi Cohen, MS.Ed, Director of Early Childhood Education at Temple Dor Dorim Early Childhood Center

I remember the summer before my senior year of high

58

school my parents announced they were going to be sending me for eight weeks to Israel on a teen tour. “Eight weeks?!” I whined. “I can’t leave my friends for eight weeks! All my friends are staying home, why can’t I?” I was so consumed with worry that I would “miss” something while I was away, that I even contemplated a scheme in which my friend would somehow stage an accident where I’d break my leg and would therefore be unable to go on the trip. I guess the fear of pain stopped me and my parents ignored my ranting and raving and sent me to Israel that summer against my will. It ended up being one of my most memorable experiences and the best summer of my teenage life. Why am I sharing this story? I was a typical teenager, so I did my best to not listen to any advice (or act like I was listening to any advice). Despite my teenage dramatics, my parents stood strong on sending me “against my will.” While my father shook his head and said things like “opportunity of a lifetime” and “you’re insane” my mother calmly told me she would not allow me to sit home for a summer and do nothing. “Kids with too much time on their hands are kids who get into trouble.” And that was it. Plain and simple. End of discussion. I was fortunate in that my parents held strong against my complaining and whining. Often times as parents we cave in these moments, not wanting our children to be disappointed or upset with us, so we choose not to “push” the experience. When that happens, we might be saving our children and ourselves from “short term pain”, but there’s a lot lost in long term gain. If we don’t allow our children to work through their hesitations and experience the uncomfortable feeling of something new, we might be setting a pattern for the rest of their life that keeps them from reaching beyond their comfort zone and living a life of missed opportunities. Whether its swimming lessons, day camp, Travel Camp, sleep away camp, sports camp or a teen tour, keeping our kids busy with productive experiences helps lay the foundation for building character and developing life skills. That summer opened the door to a new world for me. When that summer was over, from that point forward, instead of looking at what I might miss, I looked at every future opportunity as a possibility and most often as a willing and eager participant.

fter serving as assistant principal of Tropical Elementary for seven years, Joyce Krzemienski was appointed principal of Peters Elementary in June 2016. She has already started making a difference in the lives of many of the students at the school by helping them to accomplish their very best. “Peters is an amazing school and I am so grateful to be a part of this family,” said Krzemienski. “The students, teachers and parents are so wonderful. I am excited to provide support, guidance, and share my expertise while working with staff and students to achieve academic excellence.” Krzemienski graduated from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania with a B.S. degree in Elementary Education with a special certification in Early Childhood Education and a Speech Communication minor. She has been working in education for the past 28 years. Some of her experiences have included: Head Start teacher, kindergarten teacher, first grade teacher, fourth grade intervention teacher, Reading Specialist, Curriculum Specialist, and PK-2 District Department Supervisor. She also earned a doctorate degree from FAU in Educational Leadership and works as an adjunct professor at FAU teaching leadership courses to aspiring leaders. “I love working with educators, students, parents, community members and district personnel,” said Krzemienski. “I am so blessed to be in a position where I am able to influence and shape lives for the positive. It is something I do not take lightly and cherish the opportunity to impact lives in a professional and positive way.” Built in 1958, Peters Elementary School is the oldest school in the city of Plantation. The school is part of the rich history of the Plantation area and once was the site of the first library in the city. The Title 1 School has 655 students and 67% of them qualify for free and reduced lunch. Peters has one of the largest preschool populations in the district with approximately 100 students below the age of five. Krzemienski says she is impressed by the teachers, parents, students and staff at the school. She received a very warm welcome when she arrived at the school and is proud to be Peters’ new principal. “I received the most amazing welcome from teachers, parents, and students,” said Krzemienski. “I felt instantly connected with everyone and I was very impressed with how friendly, kind, and generous everyone was – and still are. The teachers are an amazing group of professionals. They are incredibly dedicated to the students and the Peters’ community. They deeply care for the children and are devoted to the profession. The parents are supportive, caring, and involved in the school. The students are also equally amazing. They are respectful, kind, and extremely thoughtful. They welcomed me as their new administrator with smiles, hugs, and lots of encouragement. I couldn’t be in a better place.”

By Debby Teich

Krzemienski has already established some short term and long-term goals. “In the short term, I want to get fully acclimated and acquainted with the school. I want to really know the students, teachers, parents and surrounding community. I want to understand who they are; what’s important to them; how they operate within the school; what is working and what needs improvement; what they wish Peters to be; and what they are proud of at the school. I want to understand what the current culture/climate is like, so I can embrace the excellence that has been in place for several years. My long-term goals are to make Peters the very best school it can be. I want to work with teachers to ensure effective and efficient systems are in place to deliver high quality instruction on a daily basis to all of our students, challenging students to reach their fullest potential, both academically and socially, ensuring high levels of student engagement in the classrooms, and involving parents, partners, and community members to actively participate in the students’ learning.” Krzemienski plans to continue many of the events at the school, such as Panda Pride assemblies, Kindness awards, field days, concerts, family nights, academic nights, fundraisers, holiday traditions and many others. She recently implemented the Share-A-Pet program at the school, where therapy dogs visit and go into classrooms to work with the teachers and their students with reading, writing, and math activities. She is also considering some additional academic programs to enhance student learning. Her style is very hands-on and collaborative. She is very much a “people person,” who truly enjoys working with others, providing support, empowering others, and utilizing shared decision making to allow everyone in the organization to feel a part of the process. “I believe it takes a village to raise a child, and it certainly takes a village to run a school and allow all stakeholders to have a voice in the decision making in order to be successful,” said Krzemienski. “Students need to be supported, loved, challenged, engaged, and instructed at a high level. They need to feel a part of the school and they need to be provided with the best education possible while they are here.” Krzemienski recently moved to the Plantation area, so she could be closer to school. “I love the city of Plantation – the people, the businesses, and the location,” said Krzemienski. “It is an amazing city and I am looking forward to not only being a part of the community professionally because of my job, but personally because of where I live.” Peters Elementary is located at 851 NW 68th Avenue in Plantation. New River Middle School Poetry Night with a Twist T

his past December, New River Middle School teacher Ms. Youngblood, a science teacher who has a passion for poetry, hosted their annual Poetry Night, Poetry with a Twist. Ms. Youngblood heads the poetry club at the middle school and encourages students to let their emotions flow through the spoken word. Poetry with a Twist allows students to perform on stage in front of family, friends, parents, and faculty members, and allows their true feelings, emotions, and hard work to shine. Students were not the only ones performing however, brave teachers also took the stage, as well as a few high school students and former Sharks who returned for the special night. New River grads from Stranahan and South Plantation, and another high school student from Miami Norland High School took the stage to show the 6th, 7th, and 8th graders that their love for poetry can continue, even after they leave New River, into high school, college, and beyond. Snaps and claps were heard throughout the auditorium throughout the night while performers spoke from the heart. New River Middle School definitely has a strong support group, filled with proud teachers, administration, parents, and like-minded students. Of course, this night wouldn’t be complete without sweets and treats for the attendees to enjoy. Plenty of cookies, cakes, fruit and cheese boards, chips, and

By Jenna Shinn

crackers were provided for munching before being seated for the performances. The NRMS band was a part of the night, playing pleasant tunes before the start of the event while people were mingling and snacking. They were nothing short of extraordinary and surely set the mood for the performances to come later on. Once the snacking took place it was time for the real fun to begin. Ms. Youngblood started the night out and presented each student before they entered the spotlight. Each student had such passion in the hearts while reading their poetry; it was a sight to see! Some students read poetry aloud by themselves, while some went in pairs of two, each one just as exciting as the previous. The audience learned that poetry is not just limited to speaking, but can also be enjoyed through singing. A special student took the stage to play a guitar while singing a cover of a song. The crowd loved this one! The chorus also showed off their talent and delivered an astounding act, lead by Mrs. Prospere. Each poet displayed how words can change lives, and it was clear that many hearts were touched that night. Ms. Youngblood and the poetry club did an astounding job at showing off what poetry is really about. The students, teachers, and everyone involved in this night portray what confidence, bravery, leadership, and authenticity look like.

his past December, Tropical Elementary Chorus and Drama Club organized their inaugural holiday play, Home for the Holidays, a Musical for Young Voices. Parents, families, teachers, and staff gathered in the Tropical Cafeteria, where beautiful young voices filled the room with happiness and joy. Mr. Myers, the chorus and drama teacher at Tropical Elementary, conducted the musical for the first time before the students and staff took off for Winter Break. The chorus stood on the rafters to the side of the stage, gracefully singing cheery tunes that coordinated with the play going on simultaneously. A family of 4, plus one including their beloved cat that they packed with them, wants to travel for the holidays but can’t seem to catch a flight! What’s the next best option besides a plane, they ask. A train! But the trains are completely sold out as well. To the family’s dismay, they were out of luck and were not going to be able to travel to Grandma’s house for Christmas. Just as they were about to head home, they tried one last-ditch effort to make it to grandmother’s house by sleigh. The confident cat that cared so much about his family asked if there was any way they could ride the sleigh. Come to find out, Santa’s sleigh had been waiting for their specific family the whole time! It was a Christmas miracle, and Santa was looking out for them all along. One long blistery sleigh ride later, filled with family bonding and Christmas caroling, the

family finally made it to grandmother’s house. To make the evening whole, the father went out to buy a faux Christmas tree, but not to the families liking; they needed a real Christmas tree! They took the sleigh to a tree farm, where there was only one Christmas tree left, another Christmas miracle! Grateful for what they were able to find, they headed straight to grandmother’s to decorate as a family and exchange gifts. This musical surely brought Christmas cheer to the hearts of the audience and a memory they could hold on to all through winter break. With a total of 7 songs from the chorus and plenty of laughs from the actors and actresses, this holiday musical was a huge success. The whole cast entered the stage one last time after the curtain was closed for a bow and a much deserved applause from the crowd. Mr. Anderson, the Principal at Tropical Elementary, closed the night by thanking Mr. Myers for his hard work and holiday spirit and wished the families a happy and safe winter break. However, the students were not ready for the show to be over quite yet. One brave young man hopped off the stage to request Mr. Anderson to share the jokes that the students made up during rehearsal. Here are just a few: “Why is Frosty the Snowman so popular? Because he is cool!” and “What type of cereal do Snowmen eat? Frosted Flakes!” The audience sure got a kick out of these. The evening ended with laughter, friendship, and happy souls; the perfect combination to enter the holiday season.

n your marks, get set, no more school for the holidays! But not until Peters Elementary’s annual field day, of course! All December the students wait for this day of fun to roll around before they take off for the holidays, and Mr. McGovern ensures it is nothing short of F-U-N. Mr. McGovern is a kindergarten teacher at Peter’s and has recently been appointed to take field day by the horns and run with it. This is like a whole day of recess for the students, talk about a Christmas wish come true! Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of the last week of school, all classes were able to take a break from the books to get outside and enjoy some friendly competition. Kindergarten and first grade played the day away on Monday, starting the week off with a burst of energy. Third grade got the day going on Tuesday morning, traveling through the courses from 8:30am – 11:30am, while second grade took on the latter part of the day from 11:30am – 1:30pm. Wednesday was for the upper classmen, with 4th graders getting down and dirty in the morning and 5th graders closing out the day in the afternoon. Parents and volunteers kept the day rolling, providing water for students and staff, keeping the moral up, and providing tents for shade when the players needed a quick break. The field was set up in stations with different games at each corner and classes were able to rotate around the field, taking turns playing each game. Each class wore a different color tie-dye team jersey so that they could differentiate which class was at which station, and who was on their team. There was a rainbow parachute, dodge-bowl, a “Clean Your Room” game that involved throwing hacky sacks into hula-hoops, a water balloon hand-off contest, and so much more! There was even a special corner for Jump Rope for Heart, where students could raise money for a cause while having fun and being active. And you didn’t think Mr. McGovern would leave out tug-of war, did you? A special tug-of war contest took place at 10:30am back on the school campus, which was nothing short of super strong girls and boys tugging and pulling as hard as they could! It is not a field day without a good tug-of-war match!

harity is a familiar face in the South Plantation High School DECA program, with the club donating time, money and supplies to a wide variety of charities every year. DECA is an international club that teaches high school and college students how to be effective leaders and entrepreneurs while serving as the first step in obtaining a career in the fields of business, marketing, finance and management. The South Plantation High School DECA club has over two hundred members that are taught by advisors Mr. Jerry Holt and Mr. Ricardo Marino, and led by Florida State DECA president Justin Degen. The first charity event this year at South Plantation High was Helping Hands Humane Society. Students brought in items such as collars and dog beds that were donated to the local animal shelter for animals in need. Over three hundred dollars worth of supplies were collected and delivered to the animal shelter by the students of SPHS DECA.

Each year the club chooses a different organization to assist; last year the club donated money and supplies to the local Women in Distress home. Every year during the holiday season the DECA club also participates in the annual Angel Tree Charity. Angel Tree is a program established with the help of the Salvation Army that provides gifts for the children of families in financial and medical need and other unfortunate circumstances that would hinder them from celebrating Christmas or other holidays. Five fortunate children were assigned to SPHS’s club where students donated money that allowed them to purchase much needed clothing: a shirt, a pair of pants and shoes for each child, along with several toys that were delivered to the families on Christmas. With several charity events every year, South Plantation DECA has created a lasting impression on our community and positively influenced not only the people who they donate to, but also the members of the club.

Miss Florida USA 2017, Linette De Los Santos, and

66

Miss Central Florida USA, 2018 Gabriella Carozza, paid a visit to Tropical Elementary School on Wednesday, December 21st. These young ladies were fortunate to be able to watch Tropical Elementary’s “Poetry Theatre” Holiday Show, which was lead by 3rd grade teacher, Ms. Gail Hall. The girls enjoyed watching the show, which featured several classes performing holiday poems and/ or songs, all of which promoted fluency in reading. The girls then visited various classrooms around the campus to speak on the topic of perseverance and following your dreams, since helping and inspiring others is a dream that both of these women share. Make sure to watch out for Linette this upcoming summer as she competes for Miss USA, and Gabriella, as she competes for Miss Florida at Parker Playhouse this July. Good luck girls!

STUDY SKILLS EVERY STUDENT NEEDS By Dr. Raymond J. Huntington

F

or most students, study skills are not inherent. These aptitudes take time to learn and consistent practice to be most effective. Whether your child is a successful student or struggling with one or more subjects, there are certain essential skills that will build a foundation for his or her success in school and life. Here are some of the most critical study skills that children need to learn, all of which Huntington teaches in its advanced study skills tutoring program: Executive functioning – Executive functions are neurologically based skills that require self-regulation or mental processing. Put simply, they help children focus, prioritize tasks, set goals and work toward them, and stay attentive when studying. These “building block” skills allow children to learn successfully because they are better able to control, organize and monitor their time. Executive functioning is an umbrella term for a group of skills that children need to learn effectively, including: • Organization – The ability to keep workspaces tidy and put supplies in places where they can be found easily at any time combined with the ability to stay on top of homework and supplies needed in class and at home. • Time management – The ability to organize one’s time with the aid of a planner/ calendar in order to maximize work time and deter procrastination. • Planning – The ability to manage short-term and long-term to-dos. • Retention – The ability to retain information and retrieve it later when completing a task. • Note taking – As children move from middle to high school, assigned reading increases significantly for multiple subjects. Students need to develop a reliable method of taking notes and make sure their notes record key points covered both

in the textbook and in class. When done correctly, note taking does not take the place of careful listening or reading. Rather, good notes will supplement what children read and hear by summarizing a large amount of information into the essentials and by triggering the brain to recall important facts when needed. • Test taking – A solid study plan is the core of a good test-taking strategy. Children who embrace reliable learning methods and stick to a study schedule are best equipped to perform well on exams, but most need guidance to fine tune their test-taking skills. Huntington’s advanced study skills program emphasizes the development of proven test-taking strategies and methodologies so that children are well equipped to prove what they know when the time comes. The expectations of today’s students are high, yet the daily agenda of most classrooms leaves little time to focus on the development of study skills. And while some children are inherently more organized and studious than others, none are born with the fundamentals to make the very most of study and homework time. Huntington’s advanced study skills program gives children the tools they need to successfully acquire, retrieve, analyze and communicate information. Our program is individualized for children based on their abilities and needs. If you have a child in eighth grade or higher who could use help developing his or her study skills, call us at 1-800-CAN LEARN. We’ll work together to help your child become a more efficient, effective and confident student. About Huntington: Huntington is the tutoring and test prep leader. Its certified tutors provide individualized instruction in reading, phonics, writing, study skills, elementary and middle school math, Algebra through Calculus, Chemistry, and other sciences. It preps for the SAT and ACT, as well as state and standardized exams. Huntington programs develop the skills, confidence, and motivation to help students succeed and meet the needs of Common Core State Standards. Founded in 1977, Huntington’s mission is to give every student the best education possible. Learn how Huntington can help at www. huntingtonhelps.com.
