Dear Readers, Summer Time! Vacation Time! Camp Time! I sometimes wish I was a kid again to enjoy the stress free, seemingly endless summers of going to bed late, sleeping in, doing different things and spending time with old and new friends. As parents, we don’t typically have that luxury, but we can steal it where we can on occasion! In my last letter, I wrote about “staycations” and all of the incredible things you can do right here in South Florida. People save for years to travel on their vacation to our little slice of paradise, so don’t take it for granted! This letter, however, is more geared to summer camp for parents. I’d like to remind you that by enrolling your child(ren) in summer camp, you too get to enjoy an adult summer camp of sorts. Each morning when you wake up, there is no panic about making sure backpacks are loaded with completed projects, homework, signed agendas and supplies, you simply give them a bag of stuff (change of clothes, snack and maybe a bathing suit). They are happy to go and you are happy to drop them off. When you pick them up, usually much later in the day than school, there is nothing to worry about. There is no “HAVE TO DO” list. If I may be so bold, how about scheduling a few of those days off of work, errands and chores and just chill at your home. Imagine 8 hours of silence to sunbathe, nap, read a book or hang out with your spouse or friends. It can be a much needed battery recharge! Take your ME time and camp out at home or at the beach. At the end of the day, order in food, turn off the TV, phones and video games and play some old fashioned games with the kids like cards, Monopoly, Life, backgammon or do a jigsaw puzzle. Sometimes we are so busy and overwhelmed we forget how to enjoy simple family time at home. As far as which camps to choose, sit down with the kids and flip through this magazine to the last section (purple tabbed) titled Summer Camps. There are so many options it will surprise you all! Most camps have extended care options….TAKE THEM! Not every hour of camp needs to be structured with enrichment. Sometimes those extra hours are where the friendship bonds are made. Not to mention you get a few extra, much-deserved hours to yourself as well! There are specialty camps, outdoorsy camps, athletic camps, arts camps and everything in between! Let your child immerse themselves in something they love! You do the same! Hopefully, as your kids are enjoying their summer, you will make some camp time for yourselves. Carpe Diem parents! My best to you,
Margot

or nearly 40 years, the Florida Super Stars have taught dancing, cheering, baton twirling - and much more. They recently finished another busy season, where students had an opportunity to demonstrate their talents locally, as well as around the state of Florida. The team performed in a halftime show for the Miami Dolphins in October, a Miami Heat halftime show in December, Disney World’s Main Street Parade in February and placed first at the Wide World of Sports competition. The Florida Super Stars also stayed active in the local community, performing at Pines Day and the Miramar Octoberfest, as well as parades in Weston and Cooper City. According to Director Wendy Russell, who established the team in 1978, the program also teaches the students many life skills. “The girls learn the importance of good sportsmanship and team work, as they develop tremendous amounts of self-confidence when performing for large crowds at the major sporting events and competitions.” From September to May, Florida Super Stars will offer programs at 10 parks and community centers in Pembroke Pines, Weston, Miramar, Cooper City and Hollywood. They accept students as early as four years old. Since many of the kids start so young, they often create lifelong friendships and find that the team becomes a second family. “Just this year, I’ve been to three weddings, two baby showers, a bachelorette party, and a few bridal showers with groups of girls
who grew up together in my program,” said Russell. From June 12 to July 22, students, ages 4 to 14, will have an opportunity to hone their skills at the Summer Dance Jam Camp. The high-energy, fun-filled camp will be held at two locations - Weston and Pembroke Pines. All classes are held indoors at air-conditioned facilities. The entire Summer Dance Jam staff has grown up in the program. They have ten or more years of training and at least five years of student teaching experience. “This will prove to be an action-packed, educational experience for your child,” said Russell. Summer Dance Jam will be offered in three, two-week sessions on week days only. Instructors will have 8 to 12 children in each of the “Home Teams,” which will be divided by both age and ability. The girls will rotate to the various instructors throughout the day, while training in several forms of dance, cheer and baton twirling. For added fun, the program includes “Crazy Days,” such as Flower Power Day, Crazy Hat Day and Pajama Day. The children can dress up each day and a winner from each home team will be chosen as “Queen of the Day.” All Summer Dance Jam participants will receive a trophy at the camp show, performed on the last Friday of each of the three sessions. For information Florida Super Stars, call 954-438-2075, send an email to misswendy@floridasuperstars.com or visit www.FloridaSuperStars.com. ust like all moms, Tania Lam is performing a constant juggling act of keeping the proverbial balls in the air, letting nothing hit the floor. She has mastered the art of bumping, blocking, digging and diving to make sure everyone is taken care of...homework, grocery runs, husband, schedules, taxi service, social and personal time. Yet, unlike most of us moms or dads, Tania, approaching 39 years old, is a 5’4” powerhouse of athleticism, physical fitness and beauty (inside and out), with a drive most people cannot fathom. What is most astounding, is that she has now made a second career out of making sure balls don’t hit the ground on her side of the court. In the last two years, Tania became a professional beach volleyball player competing against women half her age. She has taken a passion for a sport that demands grueling physical training into a full time mission...and she is winning! Tania is not new to the sport of volleyball. As a matter of fact, some would say the sport is in her DNA, bridging many generations beginning with her grandparents, then her parents/ aunts/uncles, her sisters, herself and now her children. Tania Yamashita grew up in Maui, Hawaii. Her mother’s family name is Quinsaat, and this family is known for bringing the sport of volleyball to Maui. Tania began playing volleyball in 5th grade, self-described as a shy, introverted and reserved young girl. Her grandmother was her coach in school, her mother founded and trained the club team and all the kids hung out and trained in non air-conditioned, wooden floored gyms. “Luxuries weren’t afforded to us at that point in our lives and there were no Junior Volleyball programs. There weren’t even any traffic lights in our tiny town,” Tania said. “We had to work harder than most to find any competition or success, and I think
family always comes first and my husband is incredibly supportive. I do it for the love of the game,” she stated simply. As of March 7th, when asked her short term goals, Tania said she was chomping at the bit to win her first tournament. As of March 12th, Tania won her first tournament! Coincidence? I don’t think so. When this woman sets her sights on something, there is no obstacle that will stop her. “How about the long term goals?’ I asked. “I hope to be a role model for my kids, our players and anyone else who has a passion they want to follow,” she added. She explained that there are many more opportunities in the sport of volleyball than there used to be and she makes sure to champion the sport everywhere she goes. Tania and Audie’s children both play volleyball with SoFLO and are inherently good. Their daughter Elena, at age 9, is already winning tournaments and has been named MVP by coaches at several of them. DNA may be the factor here, but Tania says Elena is a fearless competitor with a drive to win that can’t be taught. Elijah is now 8 and is coming into his own in height and talent as well, recently following his sister’s footsteps by being named MVP in the 12U tournament. Tania commented, “My sisters and I were raised by our father who constantly preached to us to stay humble, even as the spotlight shined on us.” Now, more than ever, lies the challenge for Tania and Audie to teach the balance of success and humility in a competitive environment to their own children. Another generation well on its way to making their name and good sportsmanship reputation in the sport of volleyball. SoFLO Volleyball continues to produce top volleyball players and teams. At the time of this interview, the South Plantation High boys volleyball team, coached by Audie and Tania, was undefeated. They are planning for continued growth with their program and player development, focusing on professional quality instruction in a supportive, encouraging environment. It truly is a family love affair with the game. As for how long Tania plans to continue to play at this high level, she says, “I guess I will play for as long as my body is strong and as long as I can be competitive in the sport. Most importantly, for as long as I am still loving playing. I want people to see that you can juggle it all,” she said, smiling a smile of immense satisfaction. If you would like to learn more about Tania Lam and SoFLO Volleyball Academy, please visit their website at soflovolleyball.org or call (954) 600-9810.

School in Weston and then moved to Pines YMCA to build the recreational volleyball program for the Y. Ohana grew into 13 teams of competitive junior boys & girls. Eventually, as is the case with many family partnerships, they decided to go their own ways. In 2014, Tania and Audie Lam started SoFLO Volleyball Academy out of South Plantation High School and the David Posnack JCC in Davie. They started small, but grew quickly, and now SoFLO is their full-time careers developing and training individuals and teams into highly successful volleyball machines! Their passion and the success they have found doing something they both love is contagious. As owners, coaches and leaders to their players, staff and teams, as well as parents to their Elena and Elijah, they are constantly finding ways to motivate and be role models while developing their players skills and talents. While building the SoFLO Volleyball Academy program, the introduction of beach volleyball became critical. Tania was encouraged to learn beach volleyball by a close friend and current beach coach, Casio Vargas. Casio is a Plantation resident, fireman and volleyball activist in the community. “Beach volleyball is a whole different sport,” said Tania. “Two people instead of six on a team, playing on sand instead of gym floors, in the elements verses a controlled air-conditioned gym is light years apart from what I knew about the sport,” she added. Tania doesn’t do anything half way, so she immersed herself in the sport, training extensively and not resting until she has conquered her mission. She entered AA tournaments and won, then AAA tournaments and won. She now plays in the Open/ Pro division of the EVP, Dig the Beach and few select domestic tour events F.I.V.B. (Federal International Volleyball) and is the oldest in her grouping. “I have never set limits on myself,” she said referring to overcoming her petite frame, shorter than average height or older than average age for the sport. Tania trains everyday beginning at 6:30am while juggling work, family and tournament schedules. On a scale of 1 (lowest level of fitness) to 10 (highest level), she describes herself beginning at a level 2 and training her way to a level 8 currently. She works out with Lacie April Smith, a personal trainer with pro volleyball experience, who has helped her move quickly to a very high level of fitness and nutrition. “I’m stronger than I have ever been, I move better than I ever have, and I am mentally tougher than most of my competitors because of my experiences, my age and my drive,” she said. Tania’s first tournament at the semi pro level was a 2-day Invitational in New York in 2016. She played against Canada and other international teams and found the experience to be awesome in many ways. Since then, she has entered several tournaments locally and throughout the country. She said that prize money for winning is modest and sometimes covers the expenses of participating. Sponsorships are hard to come by, even though she would be humbled and honored by a major corporate sponsor that supports women & working mothers playing professional sports. “Why pursue this at this point in your life and make such financial and time sacrifices?” I asked. “I don’t see it as sacrifices at this point, my

that made us tougher,” she added. They had to travel to Honolulu to play against older, more experienced teams. This process of playing up above their age and level made them train harder and want more. By the time Tania was 11 years old, their club qualified for the Junior Olympics in California and their teams took a 1st and 3rd, a huge accomplishment for 3 sisters from Maui and just enough of a motivator to see volleyball as a way to get to college in the states. At age 12, Tania and her older sisters moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado, with their father. Tania said, “Although very difficult emotionally at first, it was a great experience moving off island and gaining exposure to better volleyball.” Her older sisters found great success in the sport winning States in High School and earning volleyball scholarships to Colorado State University, Hawaii Pacific University and University of Hawaii. Tania’s sisters set the stage for what Tania wanted. After graduating High School, Tania applied to and was accepted to 4 of her 5 choices of West Coast Universities, but not on volleyball scholarships. She chose the University of California at Santa Barbara and walked on to this “Elite 8” Western Athletic Conference volleyball team as a Freshman. She earned a starting spot at just 5’4” tall, and was then put on an athletic scholarship for the remainder of her college years. Her coach was as tough as they come, nicknamed “Queen of the Beach”, Kathy Gregory pushed and challenged Tania mentally, academically, physically and emotionally to the point of almost breaking. “I almost quit, it was the toughest time of my life,” she recalled. She was forced to come out of her introverted self, find mental toughness and become a leader on the court. After 4 years, she proved all that and more, even being invited that winter to try out for the U.S. Women’s Indoor National Team. But the universe had other plans for Tania. She went on to spend her 5th year of eligibility in Costa Rica playing for University of Costa Rica while finishing her degree in Latin American Studies. It was a year of great personal growth through travel and total Spanish immersion. During college, Tania met Audie Lam, the man who quickly became her #1 courtside fan, driving hundreds of miles through Los Angeles traffic to watch her games. He became her husband after college and were married on Maui. Soon after, they moved back to the Hawaiian islands from California and helped the family business, became realtors and volunteer coached a club volleyball team. They then found Ft. Lauderdale on a vacation, moved there, and never looked back. They pursued real estate and mortgage careers leaving volleyball in the past, instead opting for tennis, a sport they could do together. No surprise here, she was a natural at the overhead and serve, she just had to learn the ground strokes and strategies. She went on to play at a very high club level in women’s and mixed doubles and still continues to play for fun with her teammates at Veltri Tennis Center in Plantation. Not very long after moving to Ft. Lauderdale, Tania and Audie had their first child, Elena, in 2007 and then their second child, Elijah in 2009. With two small children, Tania’s close-knit family roots found her family reuniting in Ft. Lauderdale. With the family came a re-emergence into volleyball. They started the junior volleyball club Ohana, with Tania volunteering her time coaching and teaching skills while Audie focused on the physical training. They were based out of Sagemont

he Weston Warriors have made a move to Pop Warner’s Gold Coast Division in Broward County. Founded in 1929, Pop Warner is the Nation’s largest youth football program and the only one that requires its participants to perform adequately in the classroom. A contributing factor for this move was a league decision allowing unlimited weight classes for players 8 years old and older in the Warriors’ former league. The Warriors Football Program will benefit from Pop Warner’s strict age and weight matrix that allows kids to compete with their peers of similar age and size. Some of the many benefits of joining the Weston Warriors in the Pop Warner Organization are the following: • Compete against the Best in the Nation - Pop Warner Football Super Bowl and National Cheer & Dance Championships take place at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports Complex™ at Disney World each season for the right to be crowned Pop Warner National Champion. Older/Lighter weight rules apply. • Only Pop Warner Program in SW Broward County – within 15 minutes of Cooper City, Davie, Plantation, Sunrise, Tamarac & West Pembroke Pines. • Fun, Fun, Fun! – The #1 reason kids play sports. Specialized systems to ensure that every child learns & every child plays! • Safety, Safety First! - strict AGE & WEIGHT MATRIX reduces the risk & reality of injuries by allowing kids to compete with kids of similar size. • More than just Athletes - Pop Warner requires its participants to perform adequately in school before allowing them to play. • New Artificial Turf Fields – state of the art practice fields beginning in 2017 • Little Scholars Program - Pop Warner rewards its members for their outstanding performance in the classroom. Scholarship opportunities up to $10,000 are available.
•
Family Atmosphere! – Join family & friends for great fun at Warriors’ events throughout the year. • Coaching Education Programs - the safety of athletes is always a top priority so there is extensive training for all football, cheer & dance coaches. • Nation’s Largest Youth Football Program – Pop Warner is currently in 42 states & 7 countries, over 120 leagues & 325,000 members. The Warriors Board of Directors feel that the Pop Warner Program as a whole is a natural fit for the Weston community by helping achieve their vision of serving the best interests of the children. They are also excited about the chance to have the children compete at Disney World! Weston Warriors play at Tequesta Trace Park in Weston. Regular season runs August - October with Playoffs going through November. Saturday home games at Tequesta Trace Park and away games at local Pop Warner club fields. Practices average 3-4 evenings per week according to each coach. Teams fill quickly, early registration is encouraged. Once teams are filled, registrants will be put on a wait list. lthough orienteering has been established in Florida for the past 25 years, it has been limited to the Central Florida area. With a new permanent course at Markham Park, orienteering is now growing in popularity in South Florida. It is a great way for people, ages 8 to 80, to explore the outdoors and experience nature. All you need to get started is suitable footwear, comfortable clothing and a good compass. Originally a training exercise in land navigation for military officers in Scandinavia, the sport combines racing with navigation and can be either competitive or recreational. As a timed race, participants use a specially created, highly detailed map to select routes and navigate through diverse and often unfamiliar terrain and visit control points in sequence. In order to prove they have visited a control, they use a punch hanging from the bag to mark their control card. Recreationally, courses also can be enjoyed as a walk in the woods, with difficulty levels from beginner to expert. The permanent courses at Markham Park are the brainchild, creation and work of Sebastian Michko, who is currently an ROTC student at Texas A&M University. He completed the permanent courses last year as part of an Eagle Scout project. Although prior orienteering events had been held at CB Smith Park, Markham Park and Oleta River State Park, he was the first to establish a permanent course in South Florida. At the time, he was a student at Ft. Lauderdale High School. He was also a JROTC orienteer and one of the best orienteers in Florida. The courses at Markham Park are used for two purposes. There are one-day events, which are primarily for high school JROTC competitions, but typically also open to public participation. Most of the orienteering at the park, however, occurs on a recreational basis. For a small fee, people can use the novice (1.5 miles), intermediate (2.1 miles) or advanced (2.7 miles) maps any day to complete the course of their choice. They
navigate to a series of checkpoints, which are marked by posts stuck in the ground and topped by an orange and white orienteering marker. The more advanced courses include longer distances and more complex navigation challenges, such as going off trails or choosing multiple routes between control points. The permanent course maps are available at the park office or online on the South Florida Orienteering website, www.sflorienteering.org/course-types. “Markham is a great park for orienteering,” said Gord Hunter, director of Suncoast Orienteering. “It has many trails, a variety of terrains and features. Despite the complex forest, you are never far from the road.” Mike Engestrom participated in orienteering in the early 1980’s in Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania. He now lives in Weston and has been involved in the sport for the last few years. He is a volunteer coordinator for South Florida Orienteering (SFLO) and a member of Suncoast Orienteering (SOAR), Florida Orienteering (FLO) and Orienteering USA (O-USA). “I’ve always liked land navigation, using a map and compass, from my time with the Boy Scouts and Army Reserve,” said Engestrom. “It is a great way to get exercise and experience time in nature and wooded environments. It gets folks, especially kids, away from computer monitors and game consoles to experience nature in a healthy environment that also promotes a useful technical skill.” There are many orienteering clubs around the United Sates, most of which are listed on the website, www.us.orienteering.org/clubs/ all#start-table. South Florida Orienteering currently focuses on Broward County, Miami-Dade County, with plans to expand to Palm Beach and other contiguous regional areas. As orienteering grows in South Florida, events have been planned at a variety of parks, including Oleta River State Park, C.B. Smith Park, Tree Tops Park and possibly Jonathan Dickinson Park.

side from the obvious health benefits of a good hike, be it through a flat forest or up a hilly mountain (while traveling outside of Florida, of course), new research shows that hiking can actually change your brain for the better. In addition to reducing stress and anxiety, boosting self-esteem and releasing endorphins, a recent study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that spending time in nature significantly decreases negative, obsessive thoughts. The study found that participants who walked for 90 minutes in a natural environment reported reduced neural activity in the subgnual prefrontal cortex, an area of the brain related to mental illness. As if this wasn’t reason enough to get outdoors and enjoy nature, psychologists have also discovered the following: Disconnecting from technology while reconnecting with nature can drastically improve creative problem solving. Participants in one study went backpacking through nature for nearly 4 days; during this time they were not allowed to use ANY technology. When asked to perform tasks, which required creative thinking and complex problem solving, researchers found that performance improved by 50% for those who took part in the tech-free outdoor hiking excursion. It is important to note that both technology and urban noise are incredibly distracting and constantly demand our attention. This prevents us from focusing and challenges even the simplest cognitive functions. A nice, quiet hike, free of technology, can soothe your mind, boost creative thinking and reduce mental fatigue. What writers block?! Hiking outdoors can improve ADHD in children. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is becoming more common among children. Children with ADHD have a difficult time with impulse control and staying focused. Research has found that exposing children with ADHD to outdoor activities significantly reduces these symptoms. Basically, nature exposure can benefit anyone who has a difficult time paying attention and/or exhibits impulsive behavior. Hiking in Nature is GREAT exercise and boosts brainpower. Exercise of any kind does wonders for our overall well-being and hiking is no exception. Depending on your size and the difficulty of the hike, you can burn between 400–700 calories per hour and it’s easier on the joints the running. It has also been proven that individuals who exercise outdoors are more likely to be consistent with their workout plan, making hiking the “natural” choice for those wishing to become more active on a regular basis. Hiking is one of the easiest and least expensive activities to get involved in. Always start out small in the beginning to test your abilities. Remember – any outdoor exercise is better than none. Work at your own pace and increase distance and degree of difficulty accordingly as you go. Make sure you have a good pair of durable hiking shoes, sunscreen and a water bottle to keep hydrated. You can also use trekking poles as well. These will help you increase your speed and take some of the pressure off your knees. While South Florida may not have the most challenging and hilly terrains to discover, there are a plethora of trails and parks throughout south Florida for you and your family to explore. We’ve taken the guesswork out of it for you and compiled a list of the best of the best in Broward County.
Barrier Island Nature Trail – John U. Lloyd Beach State Park, Dania Beach At John U. Lloyd Beach State Park, the Barrier Island Nature Trail will take you away from the crowds at the beach and into a quiet patch of woods along a small strip of land on a barrier island just south of Fort Lauderdale. At an easy half-mile nature walk, it’s the perfect introduction for children to plants indigenous to the beach as well as barrier island habitats. It will also provide a much-needed break from exposure to the hot sun all day. Chapel Trail Nature Preserve, Pembroke Pines Discover this remnant of original Everglades ecosystem that was supplanted by development east of US 27. With 450 acres of preserved habitats, this hike makes an excellent bird-watching destination and you can explore it by canoe or on foot. A boardwalk twists and turns over the open water, providing resting points with benches and several covered shelters. Pine Island Ridge Natural Area, Davie A ridge top that was once surrounded by the grassy waters of the Everglades is the highest natural landform in Broward County with an elevation of 29 feed above sea level. Home to wildlife such as gopher tortoises, great horned owls, red-bellied woodpeckers, and Cooper’s hawks, Pine Island Ridge is part of the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail, a network of nearly 500 sites throughout Florida selected for their excellent bird-watching opportunities. Interpretive signage is available throughout and the total area spans 101.2 acres with the hiking trail measuring about 1.8 miles. Tree Tops Park, Davie An oasis of ancient live oaks, tropical hammocks and lush wetlands cover more than 140 acres at Tree Tops Park in Davie. A successful story for conservation, this former dairy farm was previously slated to become a golf community before it was protected for its residents by Broward County in 1980. In addition to walking the trails amid the amazing oak canopy, this sizeable park, spanning 1.2 miles, is also home to equestrian and canoe trails and connects directly to the aforementioned Pine Island Ridge Natural Area. Hugh Taylor Birch State Park, Fort Lauderdale Former estate of Chicago attorney Hugh Taylor Birch, this tropical forest located just across the street from Fort Lauderdale Beach showcases gardens and an assortment of botanical rarities coupled with gardens gone wild. An enormous fig dominates the main picnic area and becomes a forest onto itself with a crown spread of 173 feet. There Coastal Hammock Trail is a 20-minute leisurely walk through a native maritime tropical hardwood ecosystem, some of the last designated within Broward County. The Mid Trail gives different views of the park by showcasing numerous plants brought here by Mr. Birch. A self-guided audio tour may be taken with your cell phone.

many people associate orthodontic treatment with adolescence, Dr. Albert Lucas, says that orthodontists can spot subtle problems with jaw growth or with the teeth much earlier, while the primary or “baby” teeth are present. Parents may incorrectly assume they must wait until a child has all of his or her permanent teeth. However, Dr. Lucas and the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommend that every child get check-up with an orthodontist no later than age 7. “I can’t emphasize how important it is that parents understand the value of an orthodontic check-up,” says Dr. Lucas. “By age 7, enough permanent teeth have arrived for an orthodontist to evaluate the “bite” – the manner in which teeth and jaws meet and work, and how that relationship affects a child’s ability to bite, chew and speak effectively. Orthodontists can determine what, if anything, is awry. “A visit to the orthodontist can ease a parent’s mind, too,” notes Dr. Lucas. “Our recommendation may simply be ‘let’s wait and see’ while the face and jaws continue to grow.”
Some of the more readily apparent conditions that indicate the need for an examination include: • Early or late loss of baby teeth • Difficulty in chewing or biting • Mouth breathing • Thumb sucking • C r o w d i n g , m i s p l a c e d o r blocked-out teeth • Jaws that shift or make sounds • Speech difficulties • Biting the cheek or the roof of the mouth • Teeth that meet abnormally, or don’t meet at all • Facial imbalance • Jaws that are too far forward or back • Grinding or clenching of the teeth D r. L u c a s n o t e s t h a t protrusive front teeth can be prone to injury. For more information, v i s i t D r. Dr. Lucas has been an orthodontist for 24 years, and has practiced in Pembroke Pines and Plantation area since 1994. Dr. Lucas graduated from University of Florida School of Dentistry and completed an additional two year, advanced educational program in orthodontics at New York University Residency Program. Dr. Lucas is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), which has 18,000 members in the United States, Canada and abroad. Orthodontists are uniquely qualified specialists who correct improperly aligned teeth and jaws (bad bites). They receive an additional two to three years of specialized education beyond dental school to learn the proper way to align and straighten teeth. Only those with this formal education may call themselves “orthodontists,” and only orthodontists are eligible for membership in the AAO.

atthew Futterman is the author of “Players: The Story of Sports and Money and the Visionaries Who Fought to Create a Revolution.” His 2016 book is a history of the changes that saw professional athletes go from modestly paid employees of the 1950s who needed off-season jobs, to today’s multimillionaire entrepreneurs building their “brands” with endorsements, clothing lines and other enterprises. So when Arnold Palmer, one of the first athlete-entrepreneurs, died in September 2016 at the age of 87, Futterman wrote a remembrance of the iconic golfer for the Wall Street Journal. Futterman began his essay with a question, then answered it:
50
What do you think about when you think about Arnold Palmer? This is what I think about: a measly life insurance policy that transformed the business of sports and made possible the flow of millions of dollars to modern athletes like Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, and LeBron James. Here’s the rest of the story: In the winter of 1961, Arnold Palmer was a 31-year-old professional golfer who had won the Masters and U.S. Open the previous summer, and was just beginning to become a household name. Seven years previous, Palmer had signed (without legal counsel) what Futterman characterized as “an absurdly lopsided and exploitive” 10-year endorsement agreement with a sports equipment company. Now, in light of his performance and notoriety, Palmer wanted to renegotiate his contract, getting a larger percentage from the sale of balls and clubs that had his name on them. The sporting goods company agreed, but wanted to lock Palmer in for another 20 years. Palmer was okay with the length of the contract, but with a stipulation: He wanted a life insurance policy, and he wanted the company to pay for it. Futterman explains: He was 31-years-old, with two daughters and a wife to think about, and he knew he couldn’t stake his financial future on the paltry prize money available in golf in those days. Plus, he was well aware that few things were as impermanent as the career of a professional athlete. Sure, he was the defending Masters and U.S. Open champ, but the yips or a balky back could take it all away in a heartbeat.
Palmer wanted a benefit similar to those that corporations often give their key employees, an executive compensation agreement built around life insurance to provide a measure of financial security whether he lived, died or became disabled. Palmer felt he deserved such consideration because, while he might not be an executive, his involvement was a key component in the company’s success. The annual premium for the policy was $880 – about $7,000 today – adjusted for inflation, and not a lot of money then or now. At today’s rates, the premium would result in an insurance benefit of somewhere near $1 million, which is substantial, but not exorbitant. Amazingly, the sporting goods CEO refused, saying no golfer deserved something that most of the company’s executives didn’t even have. The CEO figured Palmer was in no position to turn down two decades of guaranteed income over something so small. But according to Futterman, “The life insurance policy was his line in the sand, the measure of whether this company that supposedly cared so much about him actually respected him as a professional.” Palmer broke off negotiations, and fulfilled the final three years of his original contract, and started a unique business relationship with Mark McCormack, the founder of International Marketing Group (IMG). With IMG’s guidance, Palmer produced his own line of golf equipment and apparel, designed golf courses, and became a celebrity pitchman for everything from motor oil to soft drinks. The IMG template that began with Palmer expanded from athletes to entertainers and completely changed the financial landscape of both fields. Sports and entertainment became “industries,” and the “stars” became entrepreneurs and business owners. This true story has several interesting takeaways regarding life insurance. Palmer recognized the tenuous nature of his income, and his long-term financial obligations to his family, and he saw permanent life insurance as a solution to those challenges. The executive compensation agreement idea Palmer proposed to satisfy his desire for life insurance is still used today by many companies to retain valuable talent. A lot of things have changed over the past six decades, but the essential form, function and value of life insurance has remained remarkably constant.

in education in the Broward County School District. This year, she returned to her alma mater as principal of Plantation High School. She has already started making a difference in the lives of many of the students at the school by helping them to accomplish their very best. “The saying is true – once a colonel, always a colonel,” said Parinaz. Parinaz graduated from Plantation High School. In 2001, she began teaching at J.P. Taravella High School, where she was also an assistant principal and intern principal. In 2015, she became the intern principal at Western High School. On March 7, 2017, she received a warm welcome as she started as principal of Plantation High School. “The students were wonderful with signs welcoming me around the school,” said Parinaz. “I was welcomed by the parents and teachers at the school advisory council, school advisory forum, and parents, teacher, students, organization meetings.” Plantation High School has many programs to offer its 2,186 students. They include traditional high school courses as well as Career Pathways (Academy of Finance, Aerospace Engineering, Culinary, Construction Technology, Horticulture, Academy of Hospitality, and Tourism), which give students the opportunity to earn industry certification. The school also has dual enrollment
on campus for students wishing to earn college credit and a Magnet International Bacculeraute Program. “At Plantation, you will find a myriad of courses to fit every student’s goals,” said Parinaz. “I love working with the students and seeing their growth throughout their four years and seeing them become successful adults.” Parinaz believes that the key to running a successful school is trust and open communication. In the short term, she is looking forward to getting to know her students, staff, and parents. She also wants to create an environment that is welcoming to everyone in the community and showcase the school’s programs. In the long term, she wants to increase the amount of students taking advantage of postsecondary opportunities and expand the IB Program. She encourages the students to get involved at school and in the community. “I believe students should be involved in extracurricular activities within school clubs and organizations and sports,” said Parinaz. “To be successful, they need to have a balance between their education and extracurricular activities. They also need a support system between the school and community.” Plantation High School is located at 6901 NW 16th Street, Plantation, FL 33313. ummertime is around the corner and the perfect time to give your little one’s gross motor skills a boost. Here are some ways to encourage your preschooler’s physical development: Take family walks. Alternate walking, running, jogging, and marching. Play “I Spy” or start a collection of feathers or leaves as a diversion while you walk. Indoors, lead a parade with musical instruments or flags Encourage sandbox time. Fill the box with sand toys that encourage manipulation. Make an obstacle course in your living room or backyard, consisting of cushions, cardboard boxes, toys, or other found objects that your child can run around and climb over. Play pretend games. Animals are a young child’s favorite: “Can you walk like a chicken? Gallop like a horse? What does a puppy do?” Or encourage your child to “fly” through the yard like an airplane or row a boat across the room. Introduce different kinds of tag at playdates. Play freeze tag, for example.
Play ball. Games that involve kicking, throwing, and catching are great practice. Try not to get overly elaborate about rules in the preschool years. Dance to the music. Expose your child to different styles of music. Playing musical instruments boosts physical development, too. Or share tunes with physical movements, like “I’m a Little Teapot.” Many familiar songs emphasize fine-motor skills through finger play, such as “Patty Cake” and “Itsy Bitsy Spider.” Place a string on the ground and pretend it’s a tightrope or a pirate ship’s plank to develop balance. Wash the car, bikes, dog — anything involving suds and water is energizing fun. Blow bubbles and let your child try to catch them. Introduce games from your childhood. Everything’s new to your child: “Ring Around the Rosy,” “Red Light, Green Light,” “What Time is it, Mr. Fox?” When children are physically active it not only sharpens their gross motor skills, it positively affects their self esteem, mental acuity, channels energy and results in benefits to overall health. Use Summer time as the perfect time to get physical!

Our Kindergarten students, let by Mrs. Preneat Wu, danced and sang traditional Chinese music for all to enjoy. Mrs. Veliz, our principal, and Ms. Rosa, our assistant principal dressed as a rooster, led our support staff under a group Dragon costume to greet all of the children. What a beautiful demonstration for all of us to share to start off the New Year. The celebration of humanity continued indoors with our fourth and fifth graders. For literacy week, our students read and discussed a book, Passage to Freedom, about a Japanese diplomat in Lithuania during the Nazi occupation. Mr. Sugihara was honored as one of the Righteous Among Nations, as he saved thousands of Jews by writing visas to assist them to freedom. Our students sang songs and Student

Council lit 6 candles to represent the 6 million Jews who perished in the Holocaust. Our ambassadors read names of children involved in the Holocaust and wore their pictures for everyone to see. They were able to tell the stories of both Jews and non-Jews who were affected by this horrific event. The resounding voices of our children singing Michael Jackson’s “Heal the World” was a wonderful finale. Our soloists brought clarity to the words and our students sang their hearts out for people all over the world. Our fifth graders finished the morning by planting daffodils in a new garden prepared by our teacher assistant/gardening expert, Mrs. Sonny Marro. The Daffodil Project is an international effort to plant 1.5 daffodils worldwide to remember the children who were lost in the Holocaust. Gigi McIntire, our school counselor, organized this project and is the recipient of the 2017 FAU Outstanding Holocaust Educator of the Year Award.

SCHOOLS
T
here should be a place for every child at every school where they feel safe, confident and empowered to succeed. Unfortunately, not every school has the resources to make sure that happens. Westlake Preparatory School and Academy’s mission for the past 20 years has been to make sure they create an environment conducive for each one of their students to succeed in the classroom, and in life. Small class sizes, individual attention and an academic rigor that challenges, stimulates and interests their students, make all the difference. There are many children who will succeed no matter what school they attend, and there are others who need the right school. Westlake serves students from Kindergarten though 12th grade. They are located on a beautiful 10-acre campus in the heart of Cooper City on Stirling Road. At their campus, they have been able to offer their student body a new library and media center, as well as a new computer lab. Their athletic program boasts a State Championship in Swimming and their Boys Basketball has made a name for themselves showing that the size of a school does not limit the success of their athletes, on the contrary, it offers a more opportunities for their student athletes to stand out! Westlake offers three distinct academic pathways for everything from high achievers to special needs, focusing in on the needs of each student. They have highly qualified, certified teachers that expect the very best from each child in every classroom. The administration and faculty know that it is not the average grade of the class as a whole or the mean score of a standardized test that help students succeed. Teaching in an environment with a curriculum set up to reach and connect with the child allows teachers to get the best from each individual student. This is why the teachers love teaching at Westlake. When you take a tour through the school and observe the classrooms, you will see one-on-one as well as group interaction during lessons, all with an underlying encouragement amongst the students and teachers. College preparation is always in the curriculum and Westlake’s graduates attend many of the finest schools in Florida
and throughout the country. College application assistance is a priority for Junior and Seniors, as the school believes each graduate needs to find the right college or university where the student will excel. Finding the right school for your child is about a finding an environment where they can be their individual best, where they are encouraged and nurtured to surpass the norm. Smaller class sizes and student body means larger opportunities for students to stand out and find their passion. Westlake offers a full athletic program, student government, clubs and many leadership opportunities. Their NO BULLYING ZONE campus is something for which they take great pride. All are accepted, all are welcome, everyone is unique and special...as the world should be. Westlake teaches and demands tolerance, acceptance and humility. It is a gift their students take with them for their entire lives. Westlake is dedicated to IXL Sequential Learning in the foundation subjects of math, science and language arts. With 12 levels to master learning in these areas, they also utilize Journeys and Wilson Reading Programs where they establish and track individual goals for the students. All of their teaching successes are based on their students finding success by meeting their goals. This type of hands-on teaching and tacking is what sets this school apart. Westlake Preparatory School & Academy is accredited by SACS & FCIS. They are a member of the FHSAA and are Title 1-5 approved and boast a small student teacher ratio in all areas. Westlake accepts MCKAY and SUFS scholarships. Speech and Occupational therapy are offered on campus. With a 100% graduation rate and a 98% college acceptance rate, Westlake Prep is meeting and surpassing Broward County standards. Perhaps Westlake Preparatory is the right school for your student. lantation Park Elementary is proud to be celebrating its 50th Anniversary with a series of special events designed to honor the past while focusing on the future. “Bright Past, Brilliant Future” has been the theme this year. The school year began with an increase in student enrollment and the addition of a full-time STEM program. With the focus on technology, the school added additional devices from the SMART Bond funds to strengthen the students’ understanding by integrating technology into classroom lessons. The goal is for the students to become skilled and productive technology users. The school pledge and TRIBES agreements continue to reinforce schoolwide agreements of mutual respect, appreciations, no put-downs, the right to pass, and active listening. A strong sense of community is reinforced daily. One of the many events celebrating this special milestone was held at Heritage
Park on Saturday, February 11th, 2017. It was great to visit with former students, staff, parents, and friends! Everyone enjoyed the bounce houses, face painting, food trucks, DJ, sporting events, and other exciting activities that occurred that day! Special thanks to Mrs. Mulligan, Mrs. Smith, and the PTA for coordinating such an amazing event! The annual Principal’s Reading Challenge is always a favorite at PPE. This year, Proud Principal, Ms. Julie Gittelman, filled a time capsule with special items that will be opened in 25 more years! The students and staff posed to form a special commemorative aerial “50” for a photograph which was taken by a special drone. For over 50 years, PPE continues to excel due to the dedication of the teachers and staff, student body, parents, and the great City of Plantation. Here’s to 50 more wonderful years!
HUNTINGTON LEARNING CENTER’S ACADEMIC SUPERSTARS!
S
ports & Activities Directory continues its successful Academic Superstar program with Huntington Learning Center. This program gives students recognition for their hard work and achievements. All students are different and all have different academic needs. Here are a few of their stories. Danny E., a 4th grader at Cooper City Elementary said, “Huntington has helped me reach my grade level. The teachers are always there to help me understand my mistakes.” Danny has been in Huntington for 6 months and he had struggled in vocabulary, reading comprehension, and writing. But with the help of Huntington, Danny is now able to better understand what he is reading and has improved his writing skills. With all the progress made, Danny was very proud to say that he has improved his grades and made it to honor roll! The team at the Huntington Learning Center in Pembroke Pines is very proud of the progress Danny has made in only 6 months. Keep up the good work, Danny.
Anya G. says, “I would not be where I am without all the amazing love and support Kilee and the teaching staff at Huntington have shown me!” Anya has put a lot of dedication towards getting into her dream school, Brown University. Although she keeps a high GPA and balances academics and athletics, she needed help getting her ACT score up to par with an Ivy League college. She prepped for the test with Huntington Learning Center and with the help from her teachers and a goal in mind; Anya has increased several points and is now scoring in the 99th percentile. She continues to work with Huntington, prepping for the SAT 2 test in Biology (June 10th). Franco C. came to the States from Uruguay at the end of 10th grade and struggled with his transition to American schools. He started prepping for his ACT with Huntington along with some subject tutoring in Algebra 2. By the end of Franco’s ACT journey, after learning and using the strategies taught by his teachers at Huntington, his score increased 13 points and now qualifies for 75% bright futures scholarship. Way to go, Franco!

How to Choose the Right Camp for Your Kiddos L
et’s face it, choosing the right camp for our kids may feel like a daunting task. Knowing what to look for makes the process more enjoyable and results in happy campers all summer. 1. It’s About Your Child. Knowing your child’s interest is essential to ensuring the best summer for your family. A well-balanced camp will keep campers engaged. The camp that offers a specialization such as science, coding, art, dance, sports, robotics, etc. but also blends in other interactive activities makes for a more exciting day in the end. Your child’s personality is important. Is your child mainly an extrovert or an introvert? This will reveal whether your child will enjoy a larger camp vs. a smaller setting. Ask to see the schedule for the day, as it will show productive use of time. 2. Specialty Camp. It is true that today’s choices are enormously varied. There are camps for almost every interest and discipline known to us. There is a difference and you should know what to look for when choosing a specialty camp. True specialty camps will go beyond expectations to offer a special experience for their campers… something unique that they will not get elsewhere. The right specialty camp will have experts in their respective field working with your kids. Also, look for a curriculumbased camp, meaning there were experts in the area planning purposeful activities for kids and not off the cuff planning. You’re looking for a purposeful experience for your child and money well spent or in this case invested in your child.
By Gabriela M. Brown
3. Safety. Whether it’s how a camp handles allergies, drop off/pick up, or hiring and training of staff, you need to ask the right questions. Find a camp that has clear security measures in place. A good camp will be accessible and happy to share the camp’s policies. If you notice the camp cannot answer your security questions, then you might consider looking for a different camp. Well-enforced allergy restrictions are important as well. The right camp will make the provisions necessary ensuring the safety and well-being of all children. Staff is important; check out who will be working with your child. The right camp will have set hiring procedures, appropriate training, supervising, and vetting staff. Ask to speak to the camp’s director and find out about screening procedures, background checks, and qualifications. As I said before, the right camp will be happy to share staff qualifications. 4. Camp Duration. Many camps today offer weekly schedules as opposed to all summer long, and many have the option for day camps. Hours vary as well; it is important to plan especially for working parents as this might cause a change in routine. Being prepared is key to a smooth transition from the school routine to a stress free camp routine. 5. Camp Tuition & Discounts. Keep your family’s budget in mind. Take advantage of early registration discounts. The right camp will be reasonably priced and cover things such as materials and a few treats along the way. Ask what is included in the tuition… meals, materials, etc. You will be pleasantly surprised at the frequency to which camps offer excellent discounts for groups, city employees, teachers, military families, etc.
