Dear Readers,

Hopefully you are settling back into the school year routine smoothly and now beginning to get ready for the holidays. If you’re like me, you’re also enjoying the beautiful fall Florida weather we all know and love. This is by far my favorite time of the year for so many reasons. For me, this is the time of year when my heart is constantly filled with thanks and gratitude for my friends, family, career and all of the many blessings in my life. But as many of you know, this time of year can also bring about extra stress and financial strain that the holidays come wrapped in. Luckily, there are so many deserving charitable organizations with volunteer opportunities that you can get involved in throughout Broward and all of South Florida. Non-profits such as Harvest Drive, Feeding South Florida, United Way, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Habitat for Humanity, Humane Society and Voices for Children of Broward County are just a few of the many local groups that are always seeking volunteers. There are also a slew of charity fun runs, walks and 5Ks listed in our section of 21 Family Fun Runs. So many of these events give 100% of the proceeds to a specific charitable organization or for research of treatments and cures of life-threatening illnesses. If you continue to read this issue of Sports & Activities Directory and you are still not sure which cause is best suited for you to support, just visit www. HandsOnBroward.org. HandsOn Broward will match you with volunteer opportunities based on your schedule and interests without a long-term commitment; so you have no excuse not to get involved and give back to this amazing community and its residents who may be experiencing a little bit less fortune than yourself. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the rewarding feeling of giving back to the community than to enjoy some of the exciting holiday activities that it has to offer. Kick of the holiday season with the 46th Annual It’s a Wonderful Life in Plantation Holiday Parade on November 19th or enjoy musical entertainment, games, the Food Truck Invasion and visits from Santa while the kids enjoy playing in the 75 tons of snow at Pembroke Pines Annual Snowfest Celebration on December 3rd. There’s also the Annual Winterfest Boat Parade (ranked one of the Top 20 Parades in the World!) on December 10th in Fort Lauderdale. If you’re like me, after the holidays pass and the New Year begins, you’re already making those infamous resolutions. After all, research shows that people who make resolutions are 10 times more likely to meet their intended goals than those who do not. And with all of the available technology to help us with goal setting and tracking, the odds should be more in our favor than ever; unless your resolutions include not being as dependent on technology! This year, I’m taking a different approach. I’m only setting one goal at a time. I’ve learned that if you focus on accomplishing one thing, no matter how small, you are more likely to succeed. I can’t think of any better motivation to achieve a goal other than to not allow yourself to move on to (or even make) the next one until you complete the first. Nothing is more overwhelming than a list of challenging tasks that you may have had trouble completing in the past. Studies show that the majority of New Year’s Resolutions involve a healthy diet, more exercise and spending more time with family. I hope that you will use this issue of the Sports & Activities Directory to find the perfect mix of all three and a lot more! There are so many exciting activities taking place in and around your neighborhood and throughout Broward County and South Florida. Take this opportunity to try something you’ve never done before – sign up for tai chi or take the kids to a coastal cleanup to teach them about the importance of environmental conservation. Catch one of the outdoor movies that are offered in many of our local parks, sample delicious food at an area Food Truck event or sign up as a family to participate in one of the 21 Family Fun Runs listed. No matter what activities you choose to participate in, I hope you all have the Happiest of Holidays and that you become the best you in 2017! My best to you,

Melissa Harless Managing Director of Publishing

he Plantation Historical Museum will be closed during the month of November while Plantation Historical Society members and other local volunteers transform it into a Winter Wonderland. From December 1 to January 7, over 4,000 people are expected to visit the exhibit, which has been a holiday tradition for the past 31 years. Admission is free. “It’s a joyful experience,” said Betty Cobb, Plantation Historical Society Board member. “You’ll leave with a smile on your face.” There will be over 40 different themed trees, ranging from miniature to full size. Past favorites have included themes such as “Disney,” “Around the World,” “Sci-Fi” and “Transportation,” which has a built-in train track. There will also be festive displays representing the Jewish holidays and Kwanzaa, as well as a train village. Visitors will have an opportunity to participate in the “Which Tree Will Grow Up?” contest. During the first contest held last year, three miniature trees were decorated in the themes of “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” “Elves” and “Technology.” Visitors picked their favorite tree by dropping a token in a box at the base. The “Elves” tree was the winner, so it will be a full size tree this year. Since the “Nightmare Before Christmas” tree lost by only 40 votes, organizers decided to re-enter it into this year’s contest, along with the “Hello Kitty & Friends” and “Sweet Treats” trees. In addition to the Winter Wonderland, several special events will be held on Thursdays and Saturdays in December: • December 8 – A performance by the Handbell and Handchimes Choir from the Plantation United Methodist Church begins at 7pm. The Museum will be open from 6:30pm to 8:30pm for visitors. • December 10 – Santa will visit the Museum from 10am – 12noon & 1pm – 3pm.

December 15 – Dressed as Santa, Darrell House will entertain the audience with holiday songs. His performance begins at 7pm. The Museum will be opened from 6:30pm to 8:30pm for visitors. • December 17 – Santa will visit the Museum from 10am – 12noon & 1pm – 3pm. The Plantation Historical Museum got its start in 1974, when a small group of women formed the Plantation Historical Society to preserve the history and archives of the city. They held their first public exhibit in a vacant room at City Hall. By 1985, the Society raised enough funds for a museum. Over the years, it has undergone expansions and renovations. The Museum exhibits local and state history. It has Plantation’s first fire engine on permanent display and information about the city’s founding family, the Peters. In collaboration with the Palm Beach Museum of Natural History, it has triceratops skeleton on display. A few years ago it added the Everglades Diorama, which features the sights and sounds of Florida’s abundant wildlife. It also has monthly presentations about current or permanent exhibits. From January to April, topics will include “From the Model T to the Hyperloop,” “American Folk Music re: Transportation,” “The History of the Plantation Historical Museum,” and “The Legacy Continues: The Titanic’s 105thAnniversary.” “You’ll be surprised that learning about history can be educational but also entertaining,” said John Feeney, Curator. With the support of the City of Plantation and the Plantation Historical Society, the Museum has been able to provide exhibits, events and presentations free of charge. It also holds several fundraisers throughout the year, including the Broward County Plant Affair in May and October, featuring local plant and orchid vendors, plant supply dealers, patio furniture and Master Gardeners, and Flea Market in September. The Plantation Historical Museum is located at 511 North Fig Tree Lane in Plantation. For information, visit www.plantation.org/museum.

hopping for yourself or the special someone in your life can be a monumental undertaking during the holidays, but never at Footprints Boutique. Why? The reasons are simple: Selection, Location & Service. Footprints has a large selection of sought after name brands supplying jewelry, clothing, accessories and footwear for all ages and styles of women. They are easy to get to, as they are located in the heart of Plantation on University Drive, directly across from the Westfield Broward Mall. Most importantly, however, is the service you get at Footprints Boutique. It is the magic of this gem of a ladies’ store. The kind of service you can only get from a family-run store for over four decades at the same location. Owners & Founders, Joan & Bob Charnow, are very proud of the traditions they have established and maintained as they grew from a ladies’ footwear boutique to a full service women’s boutique over the years. From mom and pop to a family run enterprise, daughters Sharin Leff and Cari Baranski, along with son-in-law John Baranski, manage and run Footprints Boutique’s day-to-day-operations. Bob’s sister Gina has been with Footprints for over 20 years and now designs and creates her own unique jewelry line, Gems by Gee, which is proudly featured at Footprints. Their staff is also considered their family and includes Martine (32 years with Footprints), Adrianne (15 years), Lori (11 years), Isabelle (8 years), as well as part-timers Joyce and Pam. Adding another generation to the Footprints Boutique family business are granddaughters, Amanda and Jessica, who jump in as Holiday Helpers during season. “Our customers are the crown jewels of Footprints Boutique,” said Cari & John. We are positive that anyone who walks through the door will find something they love for themselves or someone special in their life,” they added. They invite you to experience the secret of what three generations of women have enjoyed. Browse through and try on any of their unique jewelry, apparel, shoes, handbags, accessories and gifts. Their brand names speak for themselves: Alex and Ani, Brighton, Pandora, Kameleon, David Cline, Mesmerize,

Jag, Democracy, FitFlop, Vionic and many more. Once you find that special something that is the perfect gift, let them gift wrap it for you while you wait, it’s always complimentary! After being in the same location since they opened in 1974, Footprints Boutique has not only made a name for themselves, they have made an impact in their community. “Just as our parents did when they were getting started, we are honored to continue to give back to the community that has supported us over these past four decades,” said Sharin. “Our involvement in the community is a key component of our business,” she added. Most of the Footprints team members were raised right here in the Plantation community, and are now raising their families here as well. They work closely with individuals at all of the organizations Footprints Boutique supports such as; Relay for Life, Woman in Distress, The Red Cross, American Cancer Society, Make A Wish Foundation, FD NOW, and Debbie’s Dream, just to name a few. Footprints Boutique also works closely with local schools raising money for all their needs including sports, clubs, and PTAs. Not only do they provide monetary support, but they also hold yearly clothing and food drives and drop-offs. “We have helped raise over $200,000 and look forward to raising even more,” Sharin said. Footprints Boutique is a charming shop where you can find excellent products, personal service and prices that will bring a smile to your face. To keep a smile on your face, Footprints offers further value and discounts through their Birthday Club, Royalty Rewards Club, Loyalty Club, Gift Certificates, and complimentary gift-wrapping. Whatever your need, they will work timelessly to go the EXTRA mile. Footprints Boutique is conveniently located opposite the Broward Westfield Mall at 240 S. University Dr. in Plantation. You may reach them at (954) 475-1520 or follow them on Facebook/Footprints Ltd.

n the fall of 1992, Renée Herman took it upon herself to organize a food drive at Country Isles Elementary that would provide a week’s worth of groceries to 20 Weston area families who were down on their luck. She rallied the students to help with neighborhood canned food drives and camped outside of Publix Supermarkets to accept donations. They succeeded and the 20 families in need were fed. But she didn’t stop there. Twenty-four years later, Renée is still on a mission to stamp out hunger and help families in need. Since the inaugural Harvest Drive, the number of families in need has grown and as a result, this grassroots organization has become a district wide partnership with the Broward County Public Schools. After many years of orchestrating the details of this annual event, Renée has been blessed with several special people to assist her in her efforts. Kim O’Neill, Susan Gross, Davi Leoniff, Jodi Samson and Amy Freund all volunteer to share the responsibilities. “It takes thousands of people to make this happen each year. Organizations such as the Rotary Club of Weston, Plantation Rotary, Coconut Creek Rotary and Hollywood Rotary have been instrumental in helping with donations and money to buy groceries. Businesses like The Castle Group help with a tremendous amount of volunteers. Individuals including Jim Norton, Michael Freedland, Steve Goldstein, Robert Harms, Joe Marouf, among many others, have been life savers in the 11th hour when we did not have enough food for the promised families,” said Renée. Another distinctive characteristic of the program

By Melissa Harless, Managing Director of Publishing

is the compassion and dedication displayed each year by students who participate. “What really makes this work, what is truly unique about Harvest Drive, is that it is the students and the schools who donate their time and effort with such enthusiasm to make this a reality,” she says. Many of the students volunteer every year and she has formed a lasting bond with them throughout her time organizing the Harvest Drive. “Teaching children at a young age that their contributions can make a difference in the lives of others is what makes this project so rewarding,” Renée adds. Not only does this make the hard work and sacrifice pay off, it gives her hope for the future and inspires her to do even more. This year, over 200 public and private schools are involved in the mission to collect enough food to feed over 2,200 families throughout Broward County. Distribution sites will be set up at 15 local schools, with Western High School being the largest. In addition to these sites, approximately 189 other schools will be taking donations that will then be divided up between the area distribution sites. Families with children in Broward County Schools are referred to

the Harvest Drive by Broward County social workers as well as other local social service agencies based on their financial need. In addition to the week’s worth of groceries and Thanksgiving dinner, families are able to shop in the Harvest Drive’s makeshift stores for a variety of household items that have been donated. Volunteers work all year long collecting donations for the “Harvest Drive Boutiques” so that these families may find things they need at no cost to them. Western High and Pompano Beach High School will be fully stocked with items such as new and gently used toys, clothes and shoes, books and household items that many of us may take for granted are most in need by these families. “What keeps me awake at night worrying is that the day before the families arrive that week before Thanksgiving, we will be short. We need monetary donations and gift cards so we can buy the items we are short on at the last minute. I cannot bear the thought that our local, neighborhood families will go hungry when so many individuals, businesses and organizations have so much to give,” she said. Herman does not comprehend the word “no” when

Here is how you can say, “YES, I want to help!” • Host a Neighborhood Food Drive to collect nonperishables and things from the list below. • Donate whatever amount of money (gift cards are encouraged as well) and non-perishable food you are able to give. • Feed the volunteers on Monday or Tuesday before Thanksgiving. • Donate toothbrushes, toothpaste, toiletries, clothes, books and toys. • Help sort and pack during Harvest Days at the different distribution sites. • Spread the word!

it comes to Harvest Drive. Her passion, persistence and work ethic will not allow her to accept “no.” The Harvest Drive team continues their efforts throughout the year. They would like to give special recognition to the North Broward Preparatory Middle School for their Fundraising efforts and collections for Harvest Drive. For the past 3 years they have assisted 75 Broward County School families with food and a boutique at their Spring Into Action Drive. “100% goes to these families in need! No one gets paid to run this organization,” Renée says. “We need more help. Hunger is a year round challenge.” In addition to the businesses and individuals mentioned above, Renée and her team would also like to thank the Jim Moran Foundation, Carolina Ale House, Children’s Services Council of Broward County, Whole Foods, Ultimate Software, Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Florida Panthers and Memorial Healthcare System for their continued partnership.

November 12th & 13th at Liberty Tree Park in Plantation

RT IN THE PARK is an exciting event for all members of the community. For two days every fall, the Plantation Junior Women’s Club Foundation presents its annual arts festival in the beautiful setting of Liberty Tree Park in Plantation, Florida. This year marks the 50th Anniversary of hosting the event and how appropriate that our theme is “In Celebration of Art”! Beautiful art work and handmade crafts, a wide variety of food vendors, craft beer and incredible live music make this community oriented festival an event the whole city looks forward to. It reaches out to all the Plantation schools with an “Art Search” competition. This year, students in the city of Plantation will create their masterpieces incorporating the “Celebration of Art” theme. The artwork is done in a variety of mediums including pen and ink, watercolors, pencil drawings and acrylics. There are arts and crafts activities in the famous “Kids Korner” as well as opportunities for local musicians to perform in Kids Korner and on the main stage. An excellent reputation and tradition and extensive advertising make ART IN THE PARK one of the most popular events in Broward County. Visitors of all ages are attracted to the show. Parking and admission are free. ART IN THE PARK is a unique event as it is organized and operated entirely by volunteers – PJWC members, their families and friends. Community volunteers also come forward to make it a great success. Proceeds raised by ART IN THE PARK are returned to the community through PJWC’s many projects. In years past, net proceeds have gone to local organizations such as Plantation High

School Art Club, South Plantation High School’s Drama Club, Helen B. Hoffman Library, Young at Art Children’s Museum (benefiting low-income Plantation children), 4Kids of South Florida (their crisis facility, Safe Place is located in Plantation) and college scholarships for multiple graduating Plantation area high school seniors. Sponsors include Rick Case Automotive, TM Ralph Funeral Homes and Amy Kilcoyne Real Estate. For media or publicity opportunities, please contact Lynne Drummings at drumlyn@aol.com. The Plantation Junior Women’s Club looks forward to seeing everyone there on November 12th and November 13th.

S tudents new to the Environmental Science and

Everglades Restoration Magnet Program at South Plantation High got their first taste of high school life during Camp Everglades on Wednesday, Aug. 10th. Twenty-four upperclassmen were the counselors who worked with the freshmen during the day, as well as Camp Director Matthew Zealy. During the orientation program, the 125 students met their classmates who came from 15 different middle and private schools throughout Broward County. Teachers were on hand to prepare the newcomers for the academic rigors of high school and encouraged the freshmen to become involved in extracurricular activities. First, the students met each other through ice breaking activities and then became oriented with school procedures and the actual layout of the building through a scavenger hunt. Later, the freshmen participated in team building activities using the low ropes program. At the end of the day, they set academic goals for their first year of high school. Parents joined the camp at 5:30 for a dessert reception so they, too, could meet the teachers to learn about academic expectations and procedures for the first day of school. Camp Everglades is one of the reasons the Environmental Science and Everglades Restoration program has been a Merit School of Excellence and/or School of Distinction by the Magnet Schools of America organization. Students

are seven-time Champions of the Fairchild Challenge as well. More than 325 students applied for the program and admission was by random selection. South Plantation’s Environmental Science and Everglades Restoration magnet is open to all eligible students throughout Broward County. Free transportation is available. Academic requirements are a 2.5 unweighted Grade Point Average (GPA) in English, Social Studies, Mathematics and Science and a level 3 on the FCAT reading or 50 percent or higher total math score on a nationally recognized test. All students must demonstrate good conduct. Broward County Public Schools will accept applications for the 2017-18 school year from December 2016 through mid-February 2017. Apply online: www.browardschoolsinnovativeprograms.com/applynow-magnet-programs-application. For the 2017-18 school year, applicants must submit copies of their most recent report card and test scores before the application is complete. Applications received or postmarked after the February 2017 deadline will be processed lat a later date on a space-available basis. More information is available on the website: w w w. aking the decision to visit an orthodontist is a smart move. From having a beautiful, straight smile to helping to avoid jaw, chewing and even speech problems, orthodontic treatment can leave you both looking and feeling amazing. But, what most people are not aware of is that all orthodontic treatment starts with a records process.

Taking Records

When you first meet with an orthodontist, you may not know whether you need treatment. If the orthodontist believes you may benefit from treatment, the diagnostic records may be taken at that time, or you may be given a separate appointment. The mission of an orthodontist is to bring the teeth, lips and jaw into proper alignment, making the gathering of current patient records a key component of the process. The next step is for orthodontic records to be created. Just like a home builder begins with blueprints, an orthodontist needs blueprints, or records, of your teeth, jaw, face and underlying structures. With those in hand, your doctor is then able to determine an effective treatment plan to help you achieve the results that you want and need. So, just how are orthodontic records taken? During your records appointment, a series of measurements will be taken, so that the orthodontist has the information needed to devise the right custom plan for you. Some of the records that you can expect to be taken include: Impressions. There will be dental impressions, or molds, taken of your teeth at your records appointment. From this, plaster or digital replicas will be made. These dental impressions, as they are referred to, are made by having a gel-like material placed over the teeth and allowing it to set. These molds of your teeth play an important role in helping the orthodontist to evaluate the current positioning of your teeth, as well as predict their future placement following treatment.

Radiographs. You can expect to have a series of radiographs (x-rays) taken. These x-rays include a panoramic view which will provide a look at both the top and bottom teeth together on one film. These are especially important because they will show developing teeth that are not yet visible, giving the orthodontist the ability to predict where they will erupt, and because it will show the current jaw and bone health, and whether there are any missing or impacted teeth. Additional x-rays taken include the lateral cephalometric radiograph, or ceph, which plays an important role in helping the orthodontist to determine current jaw growth, bone structure and how it may change throughout treatment. The ceph x-ray is one that will capture the side profile of a patient, from their chin to the top of their head, providing information about bone, teeth, soft tissue and jaw alignment. This radiograph is somewhat unique to orthodontic specialists and there is a good chance this will be your first lateral cephalometric radiograph, as general dentists do not routinely take these x-rays. Photographs. Photos will be taken of the inside and outside of your mouth. The intraoral, which are inside the mouth, and the extraoral, which are outside of the mouth, will provide additional information to the orthodontist about your current profile. They will also become part of your permanent patient record and they are fun to review before and after results when your new smile is finished. You will spend approximately 60 minutes with both a treatment coordinator and an orthodontic assistant during your records appointment. Whether you take a list of questions with you to have answered, or you think of them on the spot, the records appointment is a great time to get all of your questions addressed.

Devising a Plan

All of the diagnostic records taken during your appointment

are instrumental in helping the orthodontist devise the most effective treatment plan possible. They are the blueprints that will be used to determine everything from your current jaw and teeth position, to which course of treatment will provide the best route to achieving a healthy, beautiful and straight smile. The more tools the orthodontist has for learning about your current situation, the more effective a treatment plan they can then devise. Think of the time that you put into your records appointment as a crucial stop along the way to an amazing smile. Like any wonderful journey, it helps to have a detailed map, so that you know where you are going and the best way to get there! TIME FOR A TECHNOLOGY FAST By Jodi Cohen, MS.Ed, Director of Early Childhood Education at Temple Dor Dorim Early Childhood Center

W

hen I was little the night before my parents set out to their New Year’s Eve festivities and we prepared for our kid fete of cocktail weenies and party hats, we would sit in my parent’s bedroom writing out our New Year’s Eve resolutions and goals. We would each fold our little list a half a dozen times and tuck our piece of paper away in one of the Encyclopedias that lined my parent’s shelves. They were always lofty aspirations but appropriate to our age. Be nicer to our siblings. Be more helpful to mom. Save our allowance instead of spend it. My parents were always similar as well. Lose weight. Start to workout. Save money. Gung-ho, the goals would of course last for a while and then eventually fizzle out. Following in the family tradition, I began discussing this topic with my daughter in preparation for setting goals and ambitions for the New Year. After asking her if she understood what a goal was, she thought hard about what kind of commitments she could make. I was floored when she suggested a “technology fast” for us all. I asked her what this would involve. As my daughter explained to me

how everyone is always texting on their phones, iPad or laptops, what if we didn’t do it for a day? I asked her what she thought would happen if we all “fasted” together? “More board games?” she asked…but it sounded more like a suggestion. “Play outside or cook together?”…she continued. It was then I realized how much our little ones are missing out on crucial “family time” my own included. Seated on the couch side by side, snuggling, but each with our own distraction, our little ones are picking up on it. Cooking while texting, on the phone will driving, on the IPad while they do homework…all times together with our little ones… but not really together. I realize that the more “connected” we are, the more “disconnected” we become. Guilty as charged, like so many of us, an unfortunate addictive sign of the times. So we decided to set a goal…but a realistic one; to start, one night a week of technology fasting. For a moment I am tempted to pull out my phone and jot our new plan in the notes section of my phone but decide to go the old fashioned route and use paper. These days, as my shelves are not lined with Encyclopedias, we take our vows and instead of folding them and tucking them away, we tape them to the inside of the IPad cover to serve as a reminder for when we reach for our temptations.

SCHOOLS which is in mandated books and classes,” said junior Juan Cabrera from Oakland Park. “I learned about fracking in AP Environmental Science last year, and today I learned that changing public policy is the key to a fair and equitable use of our natural resources.” The lecture introduced freshmen to the magnet theme. Caleb Downey (Plantation) said he now “understands how fracking can affect jobs,” while Laine Francois (Lauderdale Lakes) said “it is detrimental to Florida” and that she “did not want it to happen here.” Hauter also authored Foodopoly, an account of the business behind the meat, vegetables, grains and milk that most Americans eat every day. The author stayed to sign books that were purchased by students and parents. Business partner, Books & Books, sponsors the author series along with the Fans of the Everglades Restoration Magnet (F.ER.M.), parent organization. South Plantation is an all-county program and 500 students throughout Broward attend South Plantation for the magnet. For more information, check the website: sphsmagnet.com.

or the last several years, the Environmental Science and Everglades Restoration magnet program at South Plantation High, invites an author who has a publication about a current environmental issue to speak to the students and staff. In September 2016, Wenonah Hauter spoke to students about her experiences as an environmental activist. The founder and Executive Director of Food & Water Watch read from and discussed her latest book: Frackopoly: The Battle for the Future of Energy and the Environment. Hauter encouraged students to be activists about their beliefs. “Students need to get involved in the decisions that affect their lives in the future through political action,” she said. In advance of the talk, students wrote a short essay expressing their views on hydraulic fracking and how it impacts the environment. The author of the winning paper, sophomore John Paul Carriego from Plantation, introduced Hauter to the audience. After the talk, students met Hauter and discussed the topic more in depth. “Speakers open our eyes to outside views and share information other than that

The students at South Plantation High have been extremely busy

since the first day of school. Sports teams began, classes are rolling, and the students are already in the 2nd nine-week of the school year. Our students entered into the 9th grade with several high school courses already completed and many of our seniors are now dual enrolled in Broward College earning college credit, while still in high school. In the first week of October, students enjoyed Homecoming week, kicking off the week with the annual Senior Nerd Day. The week culminated with the Homecoming Dance held at Bonaventure Country Club. The Student Government Association (SGA) led by Mrs. Collins, did an amazing job with the festivities once again. The juniors and seniors have been attending presentations on Colleges and Careers. This month Officer Hamilton from the Plantation Police Department spoke on different avenues of employment, Keith Martin

and Joseph Kasper spoke about recruitment for the Broward Sheriff’s Fire Rescue, and Jana Hunt presented on careers with Advanced Roofing. The University of North Florida, Florida State University and even the University of Hawaii/Pacific spoke to our students about opportunities for degrees. We thank all of our business partners and welcome them to present to our students who can become employees and remain members of our community. Congratulations to the band on their first competition with our new Band Director Mr. Daniel Evans. For the FIRST time at the 14th Annual Falcon Sound Invitational, the Paladins were awarded Best in Class Color Guard 1A. The competition was held in Pembroke Pines. For more information, please call our school office at (754) 323-1950. You can always set up a tour of our school if your child is interested in our programs.

BCPS’s Career, Technical, Adult, & Community Education (CTACE) Department: Engineering a Bright Future E

ach issue, the CTACE Department of Broward County Public Schools will be highlighting one of our Career Pathway programs. Each Career Pathway program is strategically designed to teach students College Readiness and Employability Skills. In addition, students in a Career Pathway prepare to pass the industry-level certifications necessary to earn high-skill, high-wage positions directly after high school or college graduation. Our first Pathway focus is Engineering. One of the most consistently growing fields in the workforce, jobs in Engineering nationwide are expected to grow 10% in the next decade; in Broward County, careers in engineering and related fields are expected to grow by nearly 20%. According to statistics from the U.S. Bureau of Labor beginning engineers earn, on average, $62,000 directly out of college, and the average salary for engineers nationwide is $95,000. For our students, these numbers are too staggering to ignore. The sooner we can begin to identify students who may be interested in a career in engineering and guide them on that path, the better! Across Broward County Public Schools, the CTACE Department oversees engineering programs at nineteen high schools, serving over 4,000 students in courses such as architectural engineering, civil engineering, aerospace engineering, computer drafting, robotics, and many more. Students earned over four hundred industry-level certifications in MasterCam, SolidWorks, and AutoCad, just to name a few, and we are expanding to include certification opportunities in RECF Robotics. In particular, Plantation High offers courses in civil engineering, architecture,

aerospace engineering, and South Plantation High school offers courses in computer integrated manufacturing and engineering design & development. Students are also able to engage in competitions involving solar cars, robotics, and even simulated urban search and rescue missions with student-designed and student-created robots. Through organizations like SkillsUSA, FIRST Robotics, and MIASF, Broward students are able to leverage their skills to compete locally and nationally, earning prizes and scholarships for their efforts and the efforts of their master teachers. One of our goals is to continue to connect more of our teachers and students with partners in industry. Recently, students from four high schools toured a variety of local manufacturing facilities. There, they were able to witness how the skills they learn in the classroom are being put to use in our community by highly successful businesses like Stimpson, Hoerbiger, and Sunbelt. With increased exposure comes increased opportunities for paid internships and apprenticeships for students, both of which are goals for the CTACE Department. For more information on Engineering programs in Broward Schools, please contact James Payne, CTACE Curriculum Supervisor, at james.payne@browardschools.com. “Broward County CTACE Career Pathway students are prepared to pass industrylevel certifications necessary to earn high-skill, high-wage positions directly after high school or college.”

There are different types of students with different academic struggles. Here are just a few of their stories: Sebastian G. was able to attend Huntington Learning Center during the summer. He has had amazing results this school year. He is now an A and B student. Sebastian is enjoying the challenges that 6th grade brings and is feeling much more comfortable with his schoolwork. He continues with Huntington to improve his skills and make his family very proud of how much more he can achieve this school year. Martin A. came to Huntington Learning Center in the middle of first grade when his parents found out he was struggling, enough to potentially be retained. He worked on phonics, comprehension, and math for the last half of the

school year and passed with flying colors. This year, he is a 2nd grader and doing very well. His brother Max A. came to Huntington Learning Center last summer to work on phonics, comprehension, and math BEFORE he got into 1st grade. Dad saw a lot of the same struggles he just went through with Martin and wanted to take a more proactive approach. Max worked hard all summer and it paid off. By the 1st month of school, he was at a mid-first grade reading level and his teacher and parents are so proud. Call or visit a Huntington Learning Center location for a free consultation.

celebrated Peace Week. This year’s theme was, “Peace and Diversity.” The week’s activities included: hanging Peace Tags on trees around the campus that were created by the students, signing a Peace Pledge to spread peace amongst each other, Peaceful chalk drawings on the sidewalks, planting Peace Pinwheels, sharing Peaceful Quotes by famous Leaders during the morning announcement show, and wearing white in honor of International Peace Day. In addition, students created collages of pictures and words during art specials that demonstrated a safe, peaceful learning environment.

A special thank you to all the volunteers who assisted Mrs. North, Art Teacher, and Mrs. Martinez, Guidance Counselor, in celebration of Peace Week. Our students enjoyed all the activities that took place during that Week. Also, our newest Student Council members were chosen for the 2016–2017 school year. We would like to congratulate Alex Y., President, Marisa F., Vice President, Jason M., Secretary, and Riley H., Treasurer. We are looking forward to a very productive year with our new representatives. They are already planning this year’s community service activities.

roward County Public Schools (BCPS) Superintendent Robert W. Runcie, along with BCPS STEM Science Supervisor Dr. Lisa Milenkovic and BCPS Office of School Performance and Accountability Director Christine Semisch spent Monday, September 26, 2016, at the White House. They were invited to participate in a discussion on the importance of regional partnerships to K-12 computer science. During today’s White House event, discussions highlighted the need to establish regional collaborators to build computer science communities and organizations that are dedicated to supporting, advocating for and funding work in this area. Superintendent Runcie participated in a panel discussion and shared the District’s efforts to increase students’ access to computer science in schools. BCPS was the first school district in the nation to partner with the national organization Code.org, to expand computer science opportunities for students and increase professional development opportunities for teachers. In addition, BCPS received a $1.2 million grant from the National Science Foundation to develop a national model for integrating computer science into the elementary school day. Earlier this month, BCPS was also recognized during the White House Summit on Computer Science for all for its commitment to expand the District’s computer

science initiative, called #BrowardCodes, in 2016/17 to positively impact more than 50,000 students with computer science offerings at all 236 BCPS K-12 schools. Through a Professional Learning Partnership with Code.org, BCPS is also building a cohort of 20 master teacher trainers and increasing the number of computer science trained K-12 teachers to over 1,000. Eight middle schools also now offer the Exploring Computer Science course, and 2,000 high school students are enrolled in computer science courses at the college level through Advanced Placement or college dual enrollment. “It is a tremendous honor to be invited to the White House to share information on the great work being done across Broward County Public Schools to increase access to computer science in schools,” said Superintendent Runcie. “Computer science is a foundational field that opens doors to a variety of high-wage, in-demand career fields. We appreciate the ongoing support from our partners, Code.org and the National Science Foundation, who are instrumental in the success of our computer science initiative. Together, we are creating new educational opportunities for our students.” To learn more about the #BrowardCodes initiative, visit browardschools.com/ browardcodes.
