There are so many options for great family time in our events calendar. The City of Weston provides great art and cultural events, theater and musical opportunities, as well as health and wellness. Two major events taking place is the Weston World Fest and free Outdoor POP’S Concert. We hope you are able to attend. We are so proud of our Weston Warriors. The Cheerleaders and Football players accomplished so much and showed amazing talent and teamwork. Please read the article to find out how each group placed. Review our school section to get testing information for FSA’s and each school’s graduation date. Our teachers and principals have been working so hard to prepare our students for the next step in their education and we are so thankful for all they have done over the first half of the school year. It is never too early to start planning for spring and summer breaks. Our Spring Break & Summer Camp Directory showcases camps to accommodate all ages, interests and times. Take a look and start your plans to alleviate all the last minute stress. This time of year, as the weather starts to warm up, our attention to pool and water safety needs to become heightened. Please make sure to put all measures in place to keep your children safe in and around water. I encourage you to read the Drowning Prevention article to learn the most effective ways to prevent drowning and near drowning incidents. I wish you a wonderful spring and I look forward to seeing you at the field, parks and events.
My best to you,
Kim Kadel

Top 5 Reasons To Hire A Professional Tax Preparer “Today’s tax laws are complex, burdensome and continually changing,”
says Bruce Weinberg, Florida Managing Partner of Weinberg and Company, P.A. Tax forms can be tedious and often times very confusing. Having an accountant who is experienced in tax matters can help ensure that all of your information remains organized, the correct paperwork gets filed, and that you never fall behind. Bruce is often asked what are the benefits to hiring a professional tax preparer. His firm has provided us with five top reasons you should hire a professional tax preparer: 1. It takes the hassle out of doing it yourself. 2. You don’t have to keep up with the many tax law changes or understand complicated tax law. 3. Making mistakes can be very costly. 4. Your time is worth money. 5. A tax professional is educated on the many tax credits that are available to
businesses and individuals. You never want to miss out on any of these. In addition to doing your taxes for you, professional accountants can guide you and give advice on any financial-related matters or decisions. They become a trusted and valued part of your business and finance team. Beyond tax season, professional accountants can help you cut costs and operate more efficiently to help you save more of your money, now and in the future. For more information on hiring a professional tax preparer, feel free to contact Bruce Weinberg at (561) 487-5765 or visit www.cpaweinberg.com.

Dear Weston Residents,
10
Welcome 2019. There is not a better place to call home than Weston! This is not just my humble opinion. Ranked the top 10 Best Cities for Families in Florida, as ranked by WalletHub just this November, or Money Magazine’s 2018 list of The Best Places to live in America or Verizon Business ranking of Best Small Cities for Small Businesses – Weston stands head and shoulders above others, not just in Florida, but throughout the country. As residents and business owners it is reassuring to hear that your hometown is so well thought of for all the reasons you chose to live or invest here. My fellow City Commissioners, Thomas Kallman, Margaret Brown, Byron Jaffe and newly elected Mary Molina-Macfie and I, commit to you our dedication to continue to work to make Weston the best city in the country. GREAT LEADERSHIP: I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Commissioner Byron Jaffe on his unopposed re-election to Seat Three, after having served a partial term in office, first elected in March 2017 to fill the unexpired term of open Commission Seat Three. We welcome your continued compassion, focus and leadership. It is my pleasure to introduce you to Commissioner Mary Molina-Macfie, Seat Four. Commissioner Molina-Macfie has been a Weston resident since 1992. She is Vice Chairperson of the Consumer Affairs Board of Broward County and a Board Member of the Weston YMCA. Professionally, Commissioner Molina-Macfie owns a janitorial service all the while a dedicated voice and volunteer for community groups throughout Broward. I would not cross her either – she happens to be a Black Belt in karate too! Mary is the proud mother of two daughters, Heather and Brook. For a full biography of each member of your City Commission, you can visit our city website at www.westonfl.org/government/city-commission/city-commission COMMUNITY EVENTS: With the great winter weather in south Florida comes a host of City events and programs that we encourage you and your family to enjoy. Our WestonNights Free Outdoor concert series in the park continues with #NOFILTER bringing chart topping hits of today and classics from the 70s, 80s and 90s on Saturday, February 9th and then JADED – An AEROSMITH TRIBUTE on March 16th. Both concerts will be held at the Event Stage in Weston Regional Park from 7-10PM. All you need to bring is a lawn chair! Every WestonNights event has food trucks on site for a complete date night, or night out with friends and family. BUT WAIT, there’s more! The ever popular free monthly Moonlight Movies in the Park series continues through April; the Foreign Film Series; free professional puppet shows and magic shows at the Weston Community Center; Celebrate the Arts Day in Weston Town Center; Weston World Fest; Community CPR Day, and the annual Royal Egg Hunt. This incredible lineup of events is possible through the efforts of our Parks and Recreation department and the passionate work of the Arts Council of Greater Weston, and the Weston Music Society in partnership with the City, whose members volunteer their time to bring arts programming to residents. Details of all events can be found on our city website Events Calendar at WestonFL.org/Events and in our weekly E-Newsletter Newsday Tuesday – subscribe today! Until next time… Daniel J. n today’s fast-paced world, where answers are a Google search away, there are some who may wonder what the benefits of hiring a real estate professional to help them in their home search are. The truth is, with the addition of more information, comes more confusion. Now more than ever, you need an expert on your side who is going to guide you toward your dreams and not let anything get in the way of achieving them. Here are a few reasons you need ME at your corner: There’s more to real estate than finding a house you like online! With more than 100 steps that need to take during a successful real estate transaction. Don’t you want someone who has been there before, someone who knows what these actions are, to ensure you achieve your dream? You Need a Skilled Negotiator In today’s market, hiring a talented negotiator could save you thousands, perhaps tens of thousands of dollars. Each step from the original offer, to the possible renegotiation of that offer after a home inspection, to the possible cancellation of the deal based on a troubled appraisal… you need someone who can keep the deal together until it closes.

t’s not often an opportunity presents itself for a Broadway legend to come to a local performing arts studio and work with young performers; but that’s exactly what took place this past November. Adam Pascal, known for originating the role of Roger in Rent for both the musical and movie, playing the role of Shakespeare in Something’s Rotten, and most recently seen on Broadway in Pretty Woman the Musical, traveled to south Florida to help develop the next generation of Broadway stars. A full day of events was available to students from Broadway Kids Studio, located in the Ridge Plaza in Davie. The first event was a four-hour master class, where Mr. Pascal gave one-on-one critiques on their musical selections. He focused his feedback on ensuring these young performers understood their character’s motivation and portrayed a believable story through their vocal performance. Students and master class observers had the opportunity to ask questions, take notes, and get autographs. “Having the opportunity to work one-on-one with such a highly recognized performer gave me more insight. Adam Pascal was so great to work with. He had us sing through our pieces multiple times to make sure we implemented the objectives. He was so kind and humble and I’m so extremely grateful to have been able to participate in such an amazing master class,”
said Zach Poore, a high school Senior, who is pursuing a musical theater degree in the Fall. Following the master class was a pre-concert VIP meet and greet allowing participants to spend time with Mr. Pascal in a more informal setting. The day ended with an intimate concert where students shared the stage with the one and only Adam Pascal. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity was realized by all those who were lucky enough to secure a spot in this sold out event. Mr. Pascal was also blown away by local high school Sophomore, Mariangeli Collado, who he provided with the following feedback, “…performed perfectly, I would not not change a thing.” Regardless of experience or ability, every student gained valuable insight and memories. Maisy Surman, a high school sophomore said, “My best experience was getting to sing with him. He also taught us about his experiences in theater and film. Those tips really influenced me to chase my dreams and pursue what I love. It was great. “ Mr. Pascal emphasized to live in the moment and take advantage of the opportunities that present themselves, to seize the day. “No day but today” -Jonathan Larson

Calling Weston home is amazing. Calling Weston home can
18
be isolating. Let me explain. Many families move to our Disneyesque “superburb” for the quality of life and top school district. The fact that the town is so lush and beautiful is and added bonus. As moms, we all want the same thing, to raise our children in a safe community and see them thrive. But if you have moved far from family, living here - or anywhere for that matter - can feel lonely at first. “It was VERY lonely my first year here since I didn’t have a school-aged child,” says Jocelyn Jane, a local mom of three kids who is originally from New York. Mom-ing it in Weston, Florida. The city of Weston was born in the 90’s. Out of the Everglades’ marshland arose this lovely town. It is a relatively young city. Many of the residents, who are raising families here, come from across the state, across the U.S. and across the globe. We are a wonderful melting pot of cultures, ethnicities, and traditions. It also means many don’t have a support system in place or family nearby. I can’t tell you how many parents in Weston have told me, “We’re alone out here, we have no family nearby.” The need for connection is real. Karla Anleu agrees. She moved from her native Guatemala and has raised her five children in Weston. The initial adjustment took a little time. “It was hard and lonely in the beginning. I made friends through my kids, like at Cambridge preschool.” However, for moms like Massiel Israel, who is originally from Venezuela and a mom of two, her transition was easier. “It was not lonely. I was lucky. I got involved in church and school [right away.]” Mothering in the Past to Modern Mothering In the past, mothers were born into villages where everyone pitched in, offered guidance and kept an eye on others roaming kids. New moms had a lot of help from their extended families and villagers. Everyone contributed for the greater good and no man was left alone to survive. Modern mothering in our developed nations has forced us to create our own tribes during seasons of our life when we have the least time and energy to do so but need it the most. Here are Tips on How to Find Your Tribe Find it at the park, at church, at school pick up or find it online. It’s possible, just listen to these fellow moms. “I met Donna at a playground and she told me about the Moms Club which helped me meet some really great moms, many of which I’m still friends with today,” said Jocelyn. “My advice to other moms is to get involved in their children’s schools and search for activities, either online, social media like Facebook or in the magazines of Weston where they have activities listed,” said Karla. Early on Massiel found a Weston group that organized meetups, playdates and fieldtrips around town. “I joined meetup.com when my daughter was younger,” she said. Jocelyn, Karla and Massiel now keep very busy with a full circle of friends. Their kids are thriving and they have each successfully created their village in Weston. As moms we all have differences but we share the same struggle and the same love, our children. We love them more than life itself. That is our bond. And flourishing as moms is so much easier with a village by our side. Arleen Rodriguez is a sleep-deprived Weston mom with an inappropriate sense of humor, the heart of a rebel and a passionate collector of unusual plants. Her two babies are the essence of her soul and fuel for her drive. She is a sometime freelance writer, former TV journalist and full-time Realtor® who helps families find homes and integrate into the community. She founded the Facebook group “MamaWeston” hoping to create an online village for Weston moms. Follow her on FB @ MamaWeston or arleenrodriguezrealtor.com.

all, football and cheer dominated the Weston area this 2018 season. Parents and players, cheerleaders and coaches gathered almost daily for months and all their hard work paid off. Weston has never had as successful a season, across the board since their league was formed. Three of the football teams came back victorious with Super Bowl trophies, while three other teams were runner-ups in the Gold Coast Pop Warner League. The unprecedented accomplishments were being celebrated by the Weston Warriors nation that was founded in 1995. The cheerleaders also showcased their talents and display their championship abilities by placing first in the Gold Coast Pop Warner Cheer Competition in the Mitey-Mites and Junior Varsity divisions. In the Mitey Mites 9U football division, head coach Brian McCartney witness his team win the Super Bowl championship with a 20-8 victory over the Parkland Rangers. In the Junior Pee Wee Gold division (11U), Warriors head coach Jose Ortiz watched his players have a dominating performance in a 36-6 win over the Boca Raton Braves. Scott Wallace, the head coach of the Warriors Pee Wee (12U) group, had lots of NFL experience on the sidelines. These former pros Darren Smith, Rick Washington and Larry Faison loaned their expertise and knowledge with the players. The Warriors put on an impressive display of offense and defense with a stellar performance and a 32-0 win over the Boca Raton Braves.

The Gold Coast Pop Warner Super Bowl champion Junior Pee Wee and Pee Wee Football teams have qualified had high hopes of competing in the National Championships at Disney World. Both football teams advanced 3 rounds into Regional Playoffs, only 2 steps away from their dreams. The cheerleaders had their own victories to celebrate. The Weston Warriors Mitey Mites Cheerleaders celebrated their first-place finish in the Gold Coast Pop Warner Cheer Competition. Their dedication and teamwork brought them great success. The JV cheerleaders won their conference championship and placed 2nd in the SE Regionals which qualified them to compete in Disney World for a National Championship at the ESPN Wide World of Sports. Eventually, they placed 11th in the country. The Warriors president John LoMonaco and the entire football and cheer organization were thrilled with the league’s outstanding season. “All of our teams played their hearts out and we can be nothing but proud of their performances,” LoMonaco said. “This is the first time in Weston Warriors history that all our football teams played in a League Super Bowl. The Warriors have never won three Super Bowls in the same season.” The city of Weston is so proud of their Warriors and look forward to another wonderful season. Please look for early registration updates, spring conditioning and off-season football camps. Go Warriors!

DIRECTORY REMEMBER WATER SAFETY • It Can Happen to You. Many parents who lost a child to drowning never considered that their child could be at risk; they just didn’t realize how close the danger was. • Take ownership of your child’s safety. Never rely on responsible behavior from your child, another child or even other adults. Know who is watching your child when you can’t be there. • Don’t Multitask. Pool time means your full attention IS needed to properly supervise. Drowning happens quickly; most children who are under water for as little as 6 minutes die. • Have a response plan. If your child is missing, check the water first – whether it is the pool, lake, canal or tub. Know CPR. Remember: Children who drown do not scream, splash or struggle. They silently slip beneath the water, and usually with a parent nearby. Designate yourself or an adult supervisor to act as a Water Watcher regardless of whether the water nearby is an ocean, a lake, a water park, a pool or the bathtub. These multiple layers of protection can help prevent childhood drownings: • Install Child Proof Doors and Locks on All Interior Door Environments • Door handles should be 5 feet above ground level • Always keep doors locked • Install Alarms on Access Doors to Pools, Spas, and All Water

PARENTS NEED TO TALK TO THEIR CHILD ABOUT WATER SAFETY. HERE ARE SOME IDEAS TO START WITH: 1. “Don’t go near a pool without an adult.” This is the most important water safety conversation to have because it is so simple. 2. “If you see someone struggling in the water, don’t jump in to help. Run and get an adult. And if you fall into a pool, don’t panic, turn around, find the wall and climb out or yell for help.” 3. Practice this skill in the pool with your child. Have the child practice wearing clothing to experience the sensation.
ENVIRONMENTS • Do not deactivate alarms • If the alarm can be temporarily deactivated for an adult to open the door, the deactivate button should be out of children’s reach • Install 4-Sided Isolation Fencing Separating the Pool and/ or Backyard Lake from the Home and from all Access Doors and Entrances • Always leave the barrier in place when the pool is not in use • Gates should be 5 feet tall, self-closing and self-latching • Install A Floating Pool Alarm • Do not deactivate alarm • Consider having the pool alarm connected into your home alarm • Learn CPR And Rescue Techniques • Anyone over age 14 in your home should have CPR training • Babysitters and caregivers should also be trained • 911 dispatchers can give CPR instruction over the phone CPR Classes Available at the Following Locations: • Broward Health (954) 759-7400 • Coral Springs Fire Academy (954) 346-1774 • American Heart Association 1(800) 242-8721 • American Red Cross 1(800) RED-CROSS

hile being almost always preventable, drowning is the leading cause of injury and death to children from 1 to 4 years old. Most children who drown in home pools were not expected to be in or even near the pool and entered the water without the knowledge of their parent or caregiver. That is why, children, especially toddlers, need capable, close and constant supervision in and around water.

SCHOOLS around the country and in our state. For this reason, we have included teaching our children how to recognize their own emotions into our curriculum and we start with self-regulation. We strongly believe that if they start learning self- regulation at an early age, they will be successful in all areas of their lives. That’s why we decided to work with Family Central and their “Positive Behavior Support” project. This curriculum helps us: find new strategies and skills children need for successful social and emotional development, focus on building nurturing relationships and creating safe environments. We utilize all types of material and relaxation tips to help children learn selfregulation strategies, and we are more aware of children displaying inappropriate behaviors. We are working together with the parents to help our children be prepared and develop the necessary skills to face the future with the strength and tools needed to succeed. Starting at birth, babies begin to experiment with positive and negative experiences. This helps them develop each part of their brain. These are the moments that parents and caregivers need to be aware and stimulate their child each day to help them develop their own personal history. As a caregiver at Kinder Clues Academy we plan every activity very carefully and plan for each group and each child’s personal needs. During the school year, we offer the Parents – Teacher Conferences at three different times throughout the years, to make sure that our strategies working as a team with the parents are succeeding and

then plan a follow up for each area of development. To feel successful at Kinder Clues Academy, and to help our parents with the hard work of educating their children, we like to have the parents nearby so we can work together, step by step, as a team. We strongly believe that encouraging children to participate in exploration, experimentation, and discovery is the best way to learn and to foster confidence. We want our children to be creative and confident designers of their own future. Children will learn to be cooperative if we create an environment that promotes respect, teamwork, and civility. By providing an appropriate developmental environment and respect for each child, we will stimulate critical and creative thinking. Empowering children to understand emotions gives them the possibility to have self-control and be emotionally intelligent. Kinder Clues Academy in Davie, Florida, provides a sense of home where imagination is encouraged and your child can play while learning. All of our highly qualified teachers have extensive backgrounds in early childhood education. Each teacher excels at transforming the classroom into an open community where children from different cultures can interact while developing their own abilities and learn through teachable moments. We would be happy to have your children become part of our Kinder Clues family. Visit our facility at: 11880 W State Rd. 84 Building D1 & 2, Davie, Fl. 33325. anatee Bay Elementary 2018 Reads for the Record event did not disappoint! Each year, Jumpstart puts on a spectacular event in which millions of students worldwide attempt to “Read for the Record”. In year 13 of this literacy skill and language awareness building experience, the book Maybe Something Beautiful was chosen as the book to be read. If you’re wondering if it was a great choice, just ask any kindergarten or preschool student at Manatee Bay Elementary. On October 25th, these young readers highly enjoyed having this book read to them by special readers such as their Principal, Mrs. Heather Hedman-DeVaughn, Assistant Principals, Ms. Giselle del Barrio and Mrs. Stacey Zannini, School Resource Officer, Mark Skolnik and two extra-special guests of honor, Weston’s Director of Communications, Denise Barrett-Miller, and Weston’s very own Mayor Daniel J. Stermer. Maybe Something Beautiful, written by F. Isabel Campoy and Theresa Howell, is one that can easily spark a great bit of inspiration for beautifying the world in which people live. In fact, Mrs. Reed’s Kindergarten class was so moved by Mayor Stermer’s reading of the book that they felt motivated to carry on the

equesta Trace Middle School athletics started off the 2018-2019 school year with another county championship. The boys’ cross-country team successfully defended their championship by winning their second straight MSAA County championship on October 11, at Markham Park. The team was led by 8th graders Dante Thompson, Mattias PerezSanchez, Aaron Bullock, and 7th grader Blake Lorenzo. The boys’ team was also undefeated in both of their dual meets. The girls’ cross-country team also had an impressive showing by placing third in the county. The girls’ team was led by 7th graders: Kayla Dinda, Isabella Menaches, Victoria Menaches, Karisma Polly and Rebekah Carranza. The Tequesta Boys’ Basketball team is off to wonderful start this season. Coach Alitmar states, “This team is one of the

(Just imagine how beautiful an office painted by 21 five and six-year-old students could be!) However, after brainstorming a way for more of the community to be able to see their appreciation, the class decided instead to make a mural titled, “Beautiful Weston”. The mural turned out to be just as beautiful as the students themselves and our great city of Weston. Another great part of “Read for the Record” was that each child was given a copy to have as their very own. The children were extremely excited to be able to share this beautiful story with all of their friends and families. Being read to by special guests, getting to paint murals, and given a free book, it’s no wonder that Read for the Record is one of Manatee Bay Elementary students’ favorite annual event and a reading tradition that is loved by all. Coach was going to give the team a day off from practice, and most of them practically begged that we have practice. That defines our team. Come check us out sometime. The boys’ and girls’ soccer teams both had successful seasons, the boys finished the season 6-1, and the girls finished 5-2. Both teams qualified for the playoffs, but both teams finished with disappointing losses in the semi-finals of the playoffs at Pompano Beach High School. The girls lost their semi-final to Pines Charter, and the boys lost in penalty kicks to Pines Charter. Tequesta Trace Middle is located at 1800 Indian Trace. The main school number is (754) 323-4400. Technology continues to grow in the school and all students use lap tops in class to work on assignments. At Apple Tree, we strive on helping the student develop character. Middle school students may begin to look different and bit older than what you are used to, but they are still young and vulnerable, and want and need adult guidance. The key is they want it in their own timing and on their terms. Our teachers are accessible for every student, every day. Our Middle School emphasizes on individualism and combats the messages of conformity and materialism that are all too prevalent in our world today. he Bay’s “Promoting Relationships in Diversity through Education” (PRIDE) club held its annual International Festival on Oct. 25 during all lunches to showcase cultures from around the world. Senior Brandon Chin, said, “This day celebrates the diversity of students at the Bay and helps bring people from different backgrounds together.” “I love that our school dedicates a day to celebrating diversity. International Fest has always been one of my favorite events,” Chin said. “It’s important to be proud of one’s own culture, but also to learn more about another.” Classes and clubs participated in the festival by representing an assigned country with a booth. Students were tasked with decorating the booths, running activities and serving traditional foods. Freshman Montse Navarrete helped work the Panama booth as a part of an assignment from her AICE Spanish class. “Seeing all the booths come together shows how our hard work and effort into making the [Panama] booth paid off,” Navarrete said. “Every class worked hard to make their booth unique to the country.” In addition to the booths, students participated in cultural performances throughout the day. Chin said he chose to represent his Chinese heritage by performing a Kung Fu martial arts routine. He was thankful for the opportunity to show his classmates a part his heritage. World History teacher Glen Wolff instructed his students to write about the festival. He hoped this assignment would pique students’ interests in learning about the world. He thinks the festival gives students a chance to expand their knowledge of other countries and use it to their advantage. “We live in a multicultural global environment where being fluent in more than
one language and having an understanding about places all around the world is an upper hand,” Wolff said. “I encourage my students to participate in the festival to guide them to learn more about our world.” Each booth featured information about a different country and students were able to read the information as they passed. Wolff said the information about each nation provided an outlet for students to learn unknown facts about different cultures. “I want students to explore different countries and learn about their cultures and customs,” Wolff said. “A local and global perspective on different cultures can be helpful for students’ futures by being informed of other countries from all parts of the world.” Navarette said the Panama booth featured a game where students could attempt to jump over a long blue paper, which represented the Panama Canal. Students who were unable to climb over got splashed with water. The participants in the game were rewarded with candy. Wolff claims this event provides a look into many different countries and cultures that students may have never learned about before. He said the festival can be an eye opener to all the different cultures that surround us every day. “[International Festival] gives us an idea of what similarities of history there is between countries both close to the United States and far away,” Wolff said, “The festival presents the differences in culture and events between America in other places across the world to help us connect with others.” Cypress Bay High is located at 18600 Vista Park Blvd. The main school number is (754) 323-0350. Celebrate our Veterans!
t was red, white, and blue week at Country Isles Elementary during the week of November 5th-9th, 2018. Students, parents, and Country Isles teachers and staff worked together to show our appreciation for our military! Each morning, veterans greeted our students and talked to the children about their service to our Country. Students were amazed by their stories and learned about the different organizations that serve our Country. They even signed autographs for our students! In November each year, Country Isles Elementary supports an organization that assists our country’s veterans. This year, we partnered with Operation Gratitude, who has delivered over 2.1 million care packages to those who are serving overseas and at home. Students were able to purchase flags for a dollar, which in turn, served as a donation for this great cause. With the help of Operation Gratitude, Mrs. Norma Judd and Mrs. Julie Johnson’s second grade students created Dog Tags with messages of appreciation for our deployed military members. These Dog Tags will be included in the care packages to add an extra special touch to help our service men and women feel valued. Students in all the other second grade classes at Country Isles Elementary wrote heartfelt thank you letters to our veterans. They also worked together to create a large
American flag, made from red, white, and blue links of paper. Each paper link had a student’s personal expression about freedom written on it. This flag was beautifully displayed in the second grade building. Students were also encouraged to create posters in celebration of Veteran’s Day. Many of our students created beautiful posters that showcased their own military family members, both past and present. The posters were proudly displayed around the Country Isles campus, where all students could read about our dedicated service men and women. Country Isles students, who have family members in the military, were invited to participate in our school-wide Veteran’s Day Parade on November 9th, which concluded our dynamic Veteran’s Week celebration. Students, teachers and staff members dressed in red, white, and blue, waved flags, and cheered as Mrs. Morgan led the parade around the school while patriotic music played in the background. The students were amazed to even see our very own School Resource Officer, Deputy Augustine McGuire, walk prominently in the parade. Everyone showed their love for the service members in recognition for Veteran’s Day! Country Isles Elementary is located at 2300 Country Isles Road. The main school number is (754) 323-5250. Conducting the circuit training in Spanish has been a great learning experience for all of the students, especially the nonSpanish speakers. It incorporates different learning styles – auditory, visual and kinesthetic. “The students have really gotten into circuit training and increased their understanding of Spanish. We are all very thankful for Coach Gina,” stated Koch. Indian Trace Elementary is located at 400 Indian Trace. The main school number is (754) 323-6300. Ms. Amy Winder is the school’s principal.

ndian Trace Elementary thought outside the box to give their Dual Language students their required recess while their playground area was under construction. In order to enhance the state-mandated recess, Indian Trace’s 3rd grade Dual Language classes have been participating in circuit training twice a week outside their portable classrooms. “We had to become creative and look for alternative ways to get our physical activity in while our playground is being worked on,” said 3rd grade Dual Language teacher, Dara Koch. Luckily for the school, one of the parents is a certified fitness instructor and was able to volunteer twice a week to work with the students. Gina Deibis offered to pitch in and work with the classes. As an additional bonus, she conducts the entire workout

N
inety-nine fifth graders from Gator Run Elementary spent two days in Philadelphia, PA and three days in Washington, DC. This was undeniably an experience that will last a lifetime. Each student had a chance to delve into science and America’s history through exploration. Knowledge was being obtained through film, literacy, hands-on interactions and real-life experiences. The trip began at 4:00am with many sleepy, yet smiling faces pouring into Gator Run. What felt like hours later, as the excitement built, we landed in Philadelphia and quickly let the “Good Times roll.” We hurried into the Franklin Institute Science Museum; a place where even adults get to act like kids in their life size, interactive, science rooms. The students literally were able to climb inside a heart! After lunch we enjoyed the National Constitution Center- A museum dedicated to honoring and explaining the United States Constitution, this was followed with a Multi-media presentation of “Freedom Rising.” Days two though five were just as fulfilling as we enjoyed a plethora of activities including: • The Museum of the American Revolution: where we attended “Hamilton Was Here” and “Washington’s War Tent” theater experience, which ended with everyone being able to see the actual tent! • Toured the Memorials: Korean, Lincoln, Vietnam, Jefferson, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Martin Luther King

F
alcon Cove Middle School is one Broward County school with a unique software development curriculum. Seventh graders take Fundamentals of Web Design and Software Application to prepare to take Code.org’s Computer Science Discoveries as a High School Course, in eighth grade. During the software application portion of the course, students use the Codesters curriculum to learn how to program in the Python programming language. This project-based curriculum was further enhanced with input by Mrs. Feller, the Computer Science and Career and Professional educator, at Falcon Cove. Mrs. Feller designed a Problem Based Learning (PBL) project on the morning Hurricane Michael arrived off the west coast of Florida. Knowing her students had learned the basics of programming sprites to simulate the direction of the storm, she built a challenge for her students. It started with the PBL query of: How do we keep lives safer during storms though computer modeling and software application? The students had to research what applications are now being used in the meteorology industry and the other applications used to keep citizens safe during a storm. Students then designed an application of their interest to keep lives safer during (before and after) hurricanes, using cooperative learning groups. The students were also given the privilege to have Chief Meteorologist, Craig Setzer from CBS4 Weather come to discuss how technology is integrated into
Meteorology. Students prepared questions that assisted them in defining and designing their Codesters applications. Mr. Setzer was wonderful in answering the student’s questions and explaining the technology that is involved with predicting hurricanes. The students were able to share their software applications and will be completing their coding this semester. Falcon Cove Middle is located at 4251 Bonaventure Blvd. The main school number is (754) 323- 3200. Dr. Mark Kaplan is the school’s principal.
THERE’S A NEW SPEECH AND DEBATE CLUB AT EAGLE POINT ELEMENTARY! S
omething exciting and brand new plus gives students the opportunity to speak their mind, is happening at Eagle Point Elementary this year. It’s the formation of their Inaugural Speech and Debate Club for the 2018-2019 school year. Ms. Christine de Zayas, the school principal, was very passionate about bringing the program to Eagle Point Elementary. She knew this experience first-hand since one of her daughters participated in the Speech and Debate Club at West Broward High School. Ms. De Zayas saw the positive impact firsthand as a parent and knew this would be perfect for her students and Leader in Me school. Ms. de Zayas put a call out to her faculty to see who would be interested in sponsoring the program. Immediately, Melissa Wucher and Carly Mern, both 4th grade teachers, accepted the challenge and the adventure began. Mrs. Wucher has a background in theater as a performer and earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Theater Arts from UCLA. Ms. Mern has a background in speech and debate as a competitor from J. P. Taravella High School, which makes them a perfect combination for a fun and exciting club. With the help of their mentor, Jonathan Martin, who oversees the elementary
school clubs, Coaches Wucher and Mern put together a plan of action. More than 100 students showed up for the first informational meeting in September. Auditions were then held where 54 students from 4th and 5th grade became the first members of the Eagle Point Speech and Debate Club. Over the next few months, with the assistance of Valentina Villareal and several other Cypress Bay High School Speech and Debate students, students were taught how to best prepare the elementary students for their tournament held in April. Both teachers were asked about their goals for the students. Coaches Wucher and Mern replied, “Our goal is to motivate the children to become interested in one of the various events, such as Congress, Original Oratory, or Interpretation. This allows the students to become aware of the outside world, giving them a chance to talk about topics outside their norm. They are also developing self- confidence through the opportunity to speak in an organized manner.” Upon graduation from Eagle Point Elementary, the students can continue to pursue their career in Speech and Debate in both middle and high school. We wish this inaugural group of children the best of luck.
