Dear Readers,
A very Happy New Year to you AND a Happy Valentine’s Day! Here’s a little challenge for you, something most mothers (and fathers) rarely, if ever, do...give yourself your own Valentine’s Day gift. Love yourself first. Sound a little hoakie to you? Let’s get real! Every minute of every day of every year, we give the gifts of love, security, confidence, support, strength and nurturing to our families. As a parent, we never put ourselves first, or second, or third; we are always last. Yet, it is the single most important gift you can give anyone. Stop beating yourself up for not being everything to everyone all the time and for not being perfect. You are perfect, perfectly you. Your children look to you as their role models. What does it say to them if you don’t love yourself first? If you don’t make yourself a priority and do what needs to be done so that you are happy, first and foremost, you set an impactful example. We are not perfect at everything all the time and that’s life...messy, unpredictable and flawed. Most things that go awry in our day to day are because we are constantly multi-tasking; giving nothing our full attention at any given time. Set time aside for yourself everyday to do something that makes YOU happy, and therefore, more productive in the important parts of your life. Children need to see you that can laugh at yourself, your imperfections and errors. They need to see that life goes on and everything does not follow a script. You don’t have to be the best parent, the most fit or beautiful, or the most successful. However, you should exude confidence in that you love that about yourself. If you need “you” time...take it! Take the time in a nap, a walk, a bath, in a friends night or class or activity that makes YOU happy. The happier you are, the better role model you become and happier and healthier the family becomes. As an empty-nester now, I can look back without regret and know that my tennis time, girlfriend time, activities, volunteerism, and my quiet time all balanced me to be a happier and more confident person. Guess what? Sometimes I got it wrong, but we all survived, and perhaps thrived, because I screwed something up and fixed it the best I knew how. Not everything is about the family and kids; sometimes it needs to be just about you so you can be a happier, more confident person. So this issue is about Spring (and soon to be Summer), so give yourself a rebirth and love yourself unconditionally. In that gift to yourself, you will find the love grows exponentially into your family and sets the right foundation for your children. Truly, the most beautiful thing in a person is the love of self and the confidence that goes along with that. As we near 15 years of publishing, thank you for being a reader and/or client and user of this fun and informative publication. Please remember that the only way we can continue to publish and give to our schools, clubs & organizations is because of our advertisers. If I may ask for a gift from all of you on this Valentine’s Day, PLEASE let our business advertisers know that you saw them in the Sports & Activities Directory! With love, laughter and imperfection, my best to you,
Margot

Dear Weston Residents,
12
Welcome to 2017 in Weston! I cannot think of a better place to be than here. One of the Top 10 Best Places to Live in America, as ranked by Money Magazine. Yes, we are extremely proud of that recognition. As residents and business owners it is yet another affirmation of why you invested in Weston. My fellow City Commissioners, Toby Feuer, Thomas Kallman and newly elected Margaret Brown and I, have no plans to rest on our laurels but rather look forward to dedicating our time of service to making Weston even better. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate and introduce you to Commissioner Brown. Commissioner Brown has been a Weston resident since 1999. She is the Regional Executive Director of the Center for Hearing and Communications, a not-for-profit agency providing life-affirming hearing health care counseling and advocacy for the hard-ofhearing, deaf, and deaf/blind in South Florida. A veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard, having served proudly and honorably for four years, Peggy is married to Eric Brown and the proud mother of two daughters and two grandsons. For a full biography of each member of your City Commission, you can visit our city website at http://www.westonfl.org/Departments/ CityCommission/YourCityCommission.aspx We encourage all residents to keep engaged and abreast of community happenings, including a Municipal Special Election on Tuesday, March 17, 2017 to fill the City Commission vacancy of Seat 3 on the City Commission. Keep informed by subscribing to Weston’s weekly E-newsletter, Newsday Tuesday. With the winter weather in south Florida comes a host of City events and programs that we encourage you and your family to enjoy. First, we have concerts for every musical taste. Our WestonNights Free Outdoor concert series in the park continues with ISLAND DREAMING featuring Jimmy Stowe and the Stowaways on Saturday, February 4th and TOTALLY AWESOME 80’s with Private Stock on March 4th. Both concerts will be held at the Event Stage in Weston Regional Park from 7:00PM – 10:00PM. All you need to bring is a lawn chair! Every WestonNights event has food trucks on site for a complete date night, or night out with friends and family. For those whose passion is the classics, we present the Symphony of the Americas Orchestra with a free outdoor performance on March 12th in Weston Town Center. And yet there is more: the incredibly popular free monthly Moonlight Movies in the Park series continues through April; the Foreign Film Series; free professional puppet shows and magic shows at the Weston Community Center; Celebrate the Arts Day in Weston Town Center; Weston World Fest; and the annual Royal Egg Hunt and more. This incredible lineup of events is possible through the efforts of our Parks and Recreation department and passionate work of the Arts Council of Greater Weston, and the Weston Philharmonic Society in partnership with the City, whose members volunteer their time to bring arts programming to residents. Details of all events can be found on our city website Events Calendar at WestonFL.org/Events and in our Newsday Tuesday E-Newsletter. Until next time…

ebbie Zelman was 40 years old in April 2008, when she learned she had stage IV stomach cancer that was inoperable and incurable, and that her chances of being alive in five years were less than 5%. The mother of three children turned her personal challenge into a positive force to create a better future for people diagnosed with stomach cancer, which she continues to do today. Her three children vowed to do the same and have carved their own paths within the organization by starting Debbie’s Dream Clubs at their schools. Their efforts caught on quickly and now there are Debbie’s Dream Clubs at seven different schools. “Children are the future, so educating children about an issue has a tremendous impact,” said Zelman. “It has an even greater impact when children educate other children about an issue.” Her twins, Rachel and Zachary Guttman, who are now in college, started the first DDF school club at NSU University School Middle School when they entered sixth grade. Three years later, they started another DDF school club at the High School. Her youngest daughter, Sarah, started a DDF club in the Lower School. “I got involved in Debbie’s Dream Foundation because my mother was diagnosed with stomach cancer when I was only three years old,” said Sarah, 11. “When I got a little older, I realized that some diseases have cures and lots of people are working on them, but that stomach cancer didn’t have a cure or many treatment options and wasn’t recognized enough. DDF is a wonderful foundation that helps people with stomach cancer have better lives.” There are currently clubs at University Middle School, University Upper School, Western High School, Cooper City High School, Cypress Bay High School, William T. Dwyer High School, and Jupiter High School. Each club has 20 to 60 members that raise between $200 and $2,000 per year. The school clubs hold their own activities which have included selling Santa hats, fruit, and merchandise; goldfish cracker eating contests; restaurant nights; candy cane collections; gift and toy drives; jeans days; card making; periwinkle power days; bookmark making and much more. One of the most powerful events is Be Bold Be Bald, when students decorate a cap and wear it all day in honor of someone battling or in memory of someone who lost their battle to cancer. Although the kids are all at different schools, they are all working toward the same common
goal of helping patients, raising awareness, and raising funds for stomach cancer research. The presidents and vice presidents of each of the seven clubs are members of Debbie’s Dream Youth Leadership Council (YLC), which oversees all of the DDF school clubs and also cultivates new clubs. The YLC meets monthly to plan upcoming events, which have included nights at restaurants and yogurt places, car washes, merchandise sales, and a 5k run. They also utilize the meetings to discuss such issues as the best way to keep in touch with each other, the best way to communicate with the members of their school clubs, free websites for making flyers, and many more issues they all have in common. After the meetings, these leaders then take their ideas back to their school clubs and share them. “The meetings are full of enthusiasm, idea sharing and educating each other about what works and what doesn’t work,” said Zelman. “It is inspiring to watch these kids in action.” Daniela Schwartz is YLC co-president and president of the Cypress Bay High School Debbie’s Dream Club. “Working together, even though we attend different schools, we are able to help one another in fundraising events, volunteering events, and most importantly to help spread awareness together,” said Daniela. “I am so lucky to be able to work and meet monthly with the YLC members to help make a difference in our community!” Brittany Gendler is YLC co-president and president of the Western High School Debbie’s Dream Club. “I am so proud to be a part of this great group of students that are doing their part to help create awareness and raise funds to fight stomach cancer, one of the most underfunded forms of cancer that exists,” said Brittany. “Together we are making a difference!” Debbie’s Dream Foundation: Curing Stomach Cancer (DDF) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness about stomach cancer, advancing funding for research, and providing education and support internationally to patients, families, and caregivers. Considered a “Super Survivor,” Debbie Zelman is still receiving chemotherapy eight and a half years later and is thrilled to be able to watch her three children grow up. The Foundation has several events in the next few months. They include: Fort Lauderdale A1A Marathon and Half Marathon (February 19), FREE Stomach Cancer Education Symposium (April 29) and Dream Makers Gala (April 29). For information on joining or starting a club, send an email to comunications@DebbiesDream.org or call 954-475-1200. For information on Debbie’s Dream Foundation, visit www.DebbiesDream.org.

or over 18 years, Alex Othon has been running winter, spring and summer baseball camps in the City of Pembroke Pines. He recently took a brief hiatus from the sport to focus his efforts on golf. He organized the first annual golf tournament to benefit the Sara Othon Foundation. Proceeds will be donated to the South Florida Chapter of Scleroderma Foundation. Scleroderma, or systemic sclerosis, is a chronic connective tissue disease generally classified as one of the autoimmune rheumatic diseases. Although the disease varies from patient to patient, one of the most visible manifestations of the disease is hardening of the skin. It is not contagious, infectious, cancerous or malignant. The South Florida Chapter of Scleroderma Foundation is dedicated to helping patients and their families cope with scleroderma; promoting public awareness and education; and stimulating and supporting research to help find a cure. Alex’s wife was diagnosed with Scleroderma at the age of 35 and has been battling the disease for over nine years. She worked as a teacher, but had to resign last year as a result of the disease. “Most people have never heard of Scleroderma,” said Sara. “With every passing day, I try to educate more and more people about Scleroderma. The devastating disease affects anything you can think of. It changes your physical appearance, limits your movement, deforms your hands and affects your organs. In my case, it has affected my lungs and caused pulmonary hypertension, which overworks your heart.” Sara says, however, that she tries to stay focused on the
positive. “Knowing things can change from one moment to the next, I choose to live my life positively and full of happiness,” said Sara. “So many people overlook all the blessings they have, but I have learned what is truly important in life. I thank God every day for my beautiful family – my three girls and incredible husband. People tell me that I am a strong person. Little do they know that my family is my source of strength!” In August 2016, Alex formed the Sara Othon Foundation to help raise funds for the South Florida Chapter of Scleroderma Foundation on behalf of his wife. Held at Grand Palms Resort in Pembroke Pines, the inaugural tournament was a huge success and raised over $10,000. The tournament included 103 golfers, as well as approximately 50 people who attended to help organize the event or just show support. There was a silent auction, raffles, food, drink and more. Team Deno won the tournament. Alex has already started planning for next year’s tournament. “There is currently no cure for Scleroderma, so we live one day at a time,” said Alex. “The disease has changed our outlook in life. We stick to the simple things and don’t worry about what we don’t have. The disease has progressed throughout the years, but we keep on fighting. We have three girls and Sara fights every day to see them grow up.” For information on next year’s golf tournament, call Alex Othon at 305-467-6850.

T
By Debby Teich
welve-year-old Tyler Zager is already considered one of the best chefs in the country and the Weston resident has not even graduated from middle school. He recently appeared on Food Network’s Kids BBQ Championship, where he battled seven other contestants to determine the best kid grill master. He won the $20,000 grand prize and a feature in Food Network Magazine. The young chef hopes to be the next Bobby Flay and have his own cooking show one day. Tyler applied online to earn a spot on the Kids BBQ Championship. After he had several interviews to talk about himself and discuss his cooking, he was selected to compete on the show. To prepare, he tested all of his recipes multiple times until he knew them well. “I never expected to win,” said Tyler. “I just wanted to have a good time.” During the six episodes, which had nine rounds, Tyler participated in a series of timed challenges that included themes like Hawaiian luau and cowboy campfire. He was judged by some of the biggest names in barbeque, such as Tim Love and Graham Elliot. Tyler’s dishes included the following: • Episode 1 – Mustard Herb Chicken, Spicy Carolina Chicken Wings, Mac & Cheese • Episode 2 – Miami “HOT” Dog, Stuffed Bison Burger, Potato Slices, Herb Buttered Corn • Episode 3 – Pork Slider, Mahi Mahi Tacos, Grilled Starfruit and Pineapple • Episode 4 – Shrimp Po’ Boy, Dessert Pizza • Episode 5 – Cinnamon Toast Crunch French Toast, Porterhouse Steak, Chili, Fresh Cornbread • Episode 6 – Chicken, Ribs, Brisket, Grilled Watermelon “The Hawaiian episode was the hardest for me, because I didn’t know what was normal for them and how to really cook that style,” said Tyler. “I was so nervous in the last round, considering I knew how good my fellow competitor’s food was.” Tyler says it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. He plans to use the $20,000 prize to go to culinary school. “The highlight was the entire experience and learning how the entertainment industry works,” said Tyler. “It was so exciting to meet all of these great chefs. Graham Elliot was my favorite, because I know him the best and I know that he really knows his food.” Tyler has been passionate about cooking since he started baking with his grandmother on the weekends at age seven. Then he started helping his mom cook dinner and took over in the kitchen. He creates many of his recipes by experimenting with different ingredients. He also edits recipes from the Internet or gets them from other family members. He always prefers to cook with fresh ingredients. “Fresh ingredients add lots of flavor to your dish compared to non-fresh ingredients,” said Tyler. “They also add great color.” Although he cooks different styles and uses a variety of techniques, he loves to grill. His favorite food to make is garlic butter steak, because it is easy to make and has a lot of flavor. “I love how in grilling you get to actually see the food cook unlike most cooking ways,” said Tyler. “Also, I like to hear the food sizzle and see the flame cook it. The secret to cooking/grilling well is to always cook your meat to the right temperature.” Tyler was recently on SOFLO Taste with Michelle Bernstein on local Channel 10, where he made his grandmother’s famous sugar cookies. He was featured in Family Circle Magazine’s December 2015 issue. He was also on an episode of the Beat Bobby Flay Show, as part of the Kids Take Over episodes, where he served as a host with Sunny Anderson of The Kitchen. This was especially exciting for Tyler, since Bobby Flay is the chef he admires most. When Tyler is not cooking, attending NSU University School, or with his friends, he often spends his time volunteering. He sells baked goods and cookie kits at local farmer’s markets to help raise money for No Kid Hungry. He was one of the top five individual donors in 2016. Over the last eight months alone, he raised over $3,000 for the organization. He was named a bake sale hero and will be featured on some of their promotional material in 2017. “The proceeds go to kids in the U.S. who can’t afford food,” said Tyler. “This is important, because I know how I would feel without food. It feels amazing to be a bake sale hero knowing that I am doing a lot to help end childhood hunger in the U.S.” To learn more about Tyler, visit www.tylerzager.com.

or the past 20 years, local travel baseball players have had the option of playing for the Weston Hawks or the Weston Rattlers. The two programs recently combined their efforts into Weston Travel Ball to attract more top players and have greater access to local field space. Signups will begin in early February. Tryouts will be held in June, July and August. In the past, Weston’s best baseball players have had to choose between the two programs, as well as other programs throughout the area. Organizers are hoping that Weston baseball players will now want to play in their own city. Although Weston Travel Ball will be open to all players in the area, the majority of the players will be from Weston. As sports programs continue to grow in Weston, the two baseball programs have also had a difficult time competing for field space in the city. Even though many of the fields were built for baseball/softball, other sports are using the outfield for their programs. “Our programs are very similar already,” said Weston Rattlers Program Director Nick Arata, who played baseball at Nova High, FAU and in the Washington Nationals Organization. He also coached at Boca High School for two seasons. “We are incorporating our strengths to build a stronger program in order to keep more Weston residents playing baseball in the city. It’s always better to keep kids in their city rather than having to go out to neighboring cities just to play baseball. We want to offer many different activities to the kids in Weston, baseball being one.” The transition has already begun and will be completed by the summer. There will be standardized uniforms; one website for marketing and information purposes; and joint events and fundraisers. The two teams will share field space at Tequesta Trace Park, Weston Regional Park and Vista Park. Depending on the year, approximately 180 kids, ages 7–16,
will play for Weston Travel Ball on 16–20 different teams. They will typically play 30 league games each season (two per year), as well as tournaments and scrimmages on a per team basis. The club’s goal is to prepare the serious minded baseball player to compete on the high school level and beyond, instill in each and every player the mental and physical aspects of the game and give players the opportunity to compete on a team, where sportsmanship is first and foremost. They learn the nuances of the game, such as catching, throwing, hitting and reacting to their opponent’s strategies. They also learn about failure, working hard, adversity, and mental toughness. The coaches are paid and have college level or professional experience. They stress fundamentals by incorporating drills that develop the player and maximize their skill set. They also run the team through drills to increase team awareness and maximize team development. “The kids get to truly learn about the game of baseball,” said Arata. “They are receiving coaching tips and strategies that college and professional teams use. They are also learning how to fail and regroup from that failure, which is a useful skill in life. We work hard to teach kids the right way to play baseball and act as adults. Parents see the hard work we put into our programs to keep them running smoothly and to keep our kids engaged and enjoying the game and their time together.” Arata says that the best way for players to get the most out of the baseball experience is to truly be hands off with their kids. “Let them learn from the coaches in their own way,” said Arata. “Let them fail and pick themselves back up. Let them enjoy their time on the field with their friends. And let them grow into adulthood.” For information, visit www.westontravelball.com.

Along with medals the Warriors won a bid to compete against other first place finishers from other leagues across South Florida at the prestigious Miami Dolphins Championship Series Competition in Davie, Florida on December 18th. Again, the Warrior Cheerleaders aggressively beat out the competition and won two 1st-place trophies in the Junior Level 2 and Junior Prep Level 2 categories. They may be small teams, but the Weston Warriors Cheer Program has a lot of heart. n her 2014 book, Cut Adrift: Families in Insecure Times, Marianne Cooper, a Stanford sociologist, uses the phrase “doing security.” In what originally began as a study on how the changing economy and recent recession have magnified the divide between the haves and have-nots, Cooper discovered the turmoil has affected all economic levels. Everyone is stressed, just not about the same things. From this finding, Cooper set about learning how households at different economic levels “do security,” i.e. how they attempt to either establish or regain some financial stability. Cooper found an interesting divide. The lower end of the economic demographic primarily does security by “downscaling.” They lower their expectations, make light of their difficulties, and in some cases, simply stop dealing with things they can’t handle. In contrast, Cooper’s upper class subjects tended to do security by obsessing over it. Couples increase their accumulation goals, upgrade their children’s education, and put more into their careers. Straddling the fence between resignation and obsession is the middle class, particularly the upper middle class. These households waver between lowering expectations and ramping up efforts to earn more, save more, and push/support their children toward a higher, more secure rung on the economic ladder. Carter Ruml, a Kentucky attorney specializing in estate planning, wrote in June 2015 about Cooper’s thesis, and what, based on his experience, he saw as the primary “doing security” concerns of the upper middle class. In short, he feels doing security for the middle class consists of managing risk. Most significant are the risks of: An unplanned early retirement, A long-term care event, and Unexpected longevity.
Ruml expands on this conclusion, saying this class of Americans is “Still building wealth, but doesn’t yet have a capital base larger than what they might realistically need for themselves. Nonetheless, as life expectancy increases, children and grandchildren need to be launched in life while parents are still living…if any one of these risk events occurs, it can dramatically transform a family’s balance sheet.” The attorney then provides some mathematical modeling of each of these events impacting the finances of a fictitious character named “Upper Middle Class Henry.” Most of these scenarios involve hard choices, like deciding between conserving assets for a long life and gifting to his adult children. Ruml’s observations and calculations indicate many upper middle class Americans are at a financial threshold. If everything goes according to plan, they may achieve financial security. But it wouldn’t take much for one risk event to force them to “downscale” their future. What’s striking is the ongoing desirability, if not need, for life insurance. In order to maintain a level of financial security, Ruml’s models call for lifestyle reductions from 24 percent for longevity risk, to 49 percent because of an early unplanned retirement. As a permission slip to spend other assets, a source of supplementary funds for long-term care, or tax-free inheritance, it’s possible to see that properly positioned life insurance could greatly ease Henry’s security issues. For several decades, conventional wisdom held life insurance was something the upper middle class wouldn’t need in retirement. The uncertainty of changing times is altering that belief.

became a special needs mom at the same time I became a mom. It hit me hard, fast, and unforgivingly. My daughter, Sienna, was only four weeks old and coming off of the ventilator following open heart surgery when the geneticist delivered the news to her bedside. Hearing the words, “Smith-Magenis Syndrome” for the first time and then looking at my daughter lying there on the hospital bed, still so tiny, fragile, and new to the world, I could not begin to wrap my brain around how quickly our lives had just changed. Smith-Magenis Syndrome (SMS) is a microdeletion on the 17th chromosome that results in many complex, lifelong issues. As I began to research this rare disorder, I found websites and chat rooms describing, in grave detail, who she would become in the years ahead. Not a shred of it sounded hopeful. Horrific genetic character traits were bullet-pointed as casually as a grocery store list: Self-Injury, Aggression, Prolonged Meltdowns, Significant Sleep Disturbance, Intellectual Disability, Global Developmental Delay. It was a nightmare rapidly becoming my new reality. I was devastated and deeply depressed for several months following her diagnosis. But, as she grew, her personality emerged. She was sweet and magnetic. Her eye contact was intense, like she could see straight through to your soul. She was loving and happy. She began to hit her milestones and show progress in her development. Sienna showed us that she has a gift for drawing people in and disarming everyone she meets. Nothing brings her more joy than connecting with people. So, with time, we became less fearful of her diagnosis, and more determined to help her and other individuals with Smith-Magenis Syndrome. We were fortunate enough to meet another family, the Iannuzzi’s from Connecticut, who also have a daughter with SMS the same age as Sienna. Together, with this family, we started the SMS Research Foundation in 2010. We wanted to be a beacon of light for other families who got this diagnosis and felt as afraid
and alone as we did. It has been our mission to bring hope through research – research that is focused on finding answers that will one day lead us to therapeutic interventions that will improve the lives of individuals with Smith-Magenis Syndrome and their families. To date, we have invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in a team at the Baylor College of Medicine researching Smith-Magenis Syndrome and the critical genes involved. Our latest endeavor is a $600,000 two-year gene therapy project and partnership with Sanofi, a major pharmaceutical company. This is a very promising direction for the research we support that could potentially replace or mimic the missing critical gene, thanks to the donors who believe in our cause. We have no doubt that, with time and funding, we will make a significant impact on the prognosis of SMS. Smith-Magenis Syndrome is an extremely difficult disorder. Sienna is ten now, and while she has made amazing progress in so many areas, we do still have to battle and manage many of the behaviors we had read about. She requires constant supervision and the unpredictability of the meltdowns can make even the most mundane of daily tasks a challenge. It is not an easy life, but we are thankful for the families with whom we have connected in both the SMS and special needs communities. Connecting with others who are in similar situations as us really helps to normalize our experience. These communities have become our lifelines when we need to vent or problem-solve. Also, knowing that we are making a huge contribution with regards to SMS research has given this syndrome meaning and purpose in our lives. Our involvement in the SMS Research Foundation has helped bring hope to so many families, including our own. If you are interested in learning more about Smith-Magenis Syndrome and the SMS Research Foundation or you would like to help us advance research of SMS, please visit www.smsresearchfoundation.org. ENCOURAGING OUR KIDS TO EXPERIENCE
Weston Sports & Activities Directory
school my parents announced they were going to be sending me for eight weeks to Israel on a teen tour. “Eight weeks?!” I whined. “I can’t leave my friends for eight weeks! All my friends are staying home, why can’t I?” I was so consumed with worry that I would “miss” something while I was away, that I even contemplated a scheme in which my friend would somehow stage an accident where I’d break my leg and would therefore be unable to go on the trip. I guess the fear of pain stopped me and my parents ignored my ranting and raving and sent me to Israel that summer against my will. It ended up being one of my most memorable experiences and the best summer of my teenage life. Why am I sharing this story? I was a typical teenager, so I did my best to not listen to any advice (or act like I was listening to any advice). Despite my teenage dramatics, my parents stood strong on sending me “against my will.” While my father shook his head and said things like “opportunity of a lifetime” and “you’re insane” my mother calmly told me she would not allow me to sit home for a summer and do nothing. “Kids with too much time on their hands are kids who get into trouble.” And that was it. Plain and simple. End of discussion. I was fortunate in that my parents held strong against my complaining and whining. Often times as parents we cave in these moments, not wanting our children to be disappointed or upset with us, so we choose not to “push” the experience. When that happens, we might be saving our children and ourselves from “short term pain”, but there’s a lot lost in long term gain. If we don’t allow our children to work through their hesitations and experience the uncomfortable feeling of something new, we might be setting a pattern for the rest of their life that keeps them from reaching beyond their comfort zone and living a life of missed opportunities. Whether its swimming lessons, day camp, Travel Camp, sleep away camp, sports camp or a teen tour, keeping our kids busy with productive experiences helps lay the foundation for building character and developing life skills. That summer opened the door to a new world for me. When that summer was over, from that point forward, instead of looking at what I might miss, I looked at every future opportunity as a possibility and most often as a willing and eager participant.

he Athletic Department at Falcon Cove Middle is undeniably one of the best and most successful programs in Broward County. They have achieved much success since the school opened in 2000. In 15 years, they have won a total of 50 Division Championship Titles and 27 County Championship Titles (11 County Championships in Boys’ Soccer, 6 in Girls’ Soccer, 1 Boys’ Softball, 4 County Championships in Boys’ Volleyball, and 5 County Championships in Girls’ Volleyball). Fifteen straight years they have won a MSAA County Championship in at least one sport. These achievements are remarkable when you consider there are over 60 middle schools in the County and the amount of time the school has been open. The Athletic Department is definitely a program the school, faculty, parents, and community can be proud of. Coach Hoopes has been the leader and Athletic Director for the past 13 years. Coach Hoopes has created a one of a kind Athletic Department in which she has led not only in policy, but also by example. Coach Hoopes is responsible for winning the very first County Championship in Volleyball the very first year the school opened. Since then she has added 10 more County Championships with Coach Stupp (6 in girls’ soccer and 4 more in girls’ volleyball). Coach Hoopes and Coach Stupp coached girls’ soccer for the past 12 years. They have retired coaching soccer and passed the reigns on to new coaches this year.

Coach Hoopes takes pride in the strength and leadership of the phenomenal coaches that help make the program such a success. The coaches are truly amazing and work very hard to help the young athletes achieve success not only on the field or court and in the classroom. Coach Hoopes is thankful to the coaches for the sacrifices they make and the time they spend away from their families to coach their student athletes. They coach with passion and enthusiasm and instill a pride in representing Falcon Cove, their teachers, coaches, and fellow classmates. Coach Vargas, Coach T. Grant, Coach Feduneic, Coach Santora, Coach Johnson, Coach Malone, Coach D. Grant, and Coach Stupp – we couldn’t do it without them! We have had outstanding student athletes, who have been a part of many great seasons and teams. Their names are on banners in our gym for our students, parents, and visitors to remember and celebrate. Many of our athletes have gone on to play in college and represent their new school with the same honor, dedication, and integrity they learned when they were athletes representing Falcon Cove. Another important factor in their success is the unwavering support of their Principal, Dr. Mark Kaplan and our Assistant Principals, Mr. Lechtman, Ms. Rubin, Mrs. Hamm, and our PTA. Every year is a new season with great new athletes, coaches, and hopes for an exciting athletic season.

This trip is a yearly tradition, one that the students look forward to for many years. agle Point Elementary (EPE) students put their exemplary leadership skills into action when they synergized to enthusiastically participate in the annual Harvest Drive. This well-known community service project provides less fortunate families with groceries during the Thanksgiving holiday. “The Harvest Drive is an excellent opportunity to promote empathy and community awareness,” Intern Principal David Martin II explained. It is also a perfect service project to put Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Healthy Kids into action. As the district’s first public Leader in Me school, EPE students did not disappoint. Teams of Student Council members created catchy posters to promote the Harvest Drive and collections this year exceed expectations. Primary students in prekindergarten through second grade donated oatmeal and cereal, while intermediate students in grades three through five contributed pancake mix and syrup. First grader Ethan Schwartz said, “I was being proactive when shared cereal so that kids who can’t afford breakfast won’t be hungry when they wake up.” Fourth grader Marcela Jimenez stated, “I was sharpening the saw by donating pancake mix and syrup to the Harvest Drive because it was a great way to help other people.” Student Council Staff Sponsor Andrea Nobil was awed by how well Student Council members organized the project and how generously EPE students donated. “This was my first year working on the Harvest Drive and the response was overwhelming! All of the kids felt proud to participate. You should have seen how much the pre-K students carried,” Nobil shared. Thanks to the generosity of EPE students and families, five cars and one truck filled to capacity were delivered to Western High School. According to Student Council President Andrew Dunham, “This was a win-win for us because we felt good doing the right thing and now others in our community will benefit.” A substantial grant allowed EPE to launch Covey’s 7 Habits of Happy Kids two years ago. The faculty participated in a 3-day workshop prior to implementation and volunteer Lighthouse Committee members meet monthly to discuss implementation strategies. Leader in Me initiatives have been well received by students, parents, community partners, school board members, and Franklin Covey trainers. Eagle Point has hosted Leader in Me information sessions for other schools interested in the program and serves as a model in the district. EPE students and staff have more plans to integrate the 7 Habits with community service projects throughout the year. All of the outreach efforts will be featured in the school’s Annual Spring Leadership Day.

SCHOOLS pleased with the level of engagement and knowledge base of the students. During the presentation, Mr. Oyer discussed his first book, The American Jungle, which describes his ancestors’ arrival in Florida, their encounter with the Seminoles, and the hard life as an early pioneer. He spoke for 90 minutes and featured a slide show of pictures from his book. Students were thoroughly engrossed in his presentation and even the teachers did not want to leave in order to take their scheduled break. Caleigh Ana Lick stated, “It was really cool! I liked it because he gave a lot of information about the book and we were able to see him in person.” While Mrs. Strawder, fifth grade teacher said, “This is so educational, historical, and enlightening! An amazing experience for our students.” Joel Cortes, the fifth grade class President said, “It was amazing – he explained everything. I got to meet him in the office, before anyone else! He is extraordinary!!” Mrs. Mila, Media Specialist, summed up the visit, “I have seen Harvey in the past giving presentations and I knew that our students would greatly benefit from having this dynamic speaker share his books and experiences. What surprised me was how engaged all the students were and still talk about him! I can’t keep his books on the shelves!”

arvey Oyer III is the direct descendant of The Barefoot Mailman. He used his great, great Uncle’s diary as a source for writing his Charlie Pierce series of books. This ties into the fourth grade curriculum as the standards state that in fourth grade students study Florida history. Additionally, students integrate math, map skills, and Science standards while working on this important unit of study. Students also studied the Everglades while reading The Last Egret – a touching tale of Charlie Pierce and his role in the almost decimation of the egrets. The students chose which area of the Everglades they were most interested in and researched on that topic. Some students chose the flora and fauna of the Everglades, some compared/contrasted alligators and crocodiles, some discovered the effects of fire on the Everglades, and some shared the plethora of fish found in the Everglades, just to name a few. Cranium Core is an online “game show” style of creating “De-text-ives” that search for the clues from the text in order to answer the questions, earning points for their team. The entire fourth grade played, using iPads in the Media Center with the Cranium Connect app. The owner/developer of the company personally came to our school, as he is very interested in The Last Egret and wrote the questions used in the game. fourth and fifth grade students were preparing for their Student Council Elections. For two weeks, these students prepared campaign posters and speeches to present to their fellow peers for a chance to represent their school with a leadership role. Jennifer Ramos, a fifth grade teacher and the Student Council Coordinator for the past five years, has worked with the fourth and fifth grade students for a chance to give back to their community. The voting process started in the classroom where nominations were made, voices were heard, and two students from each class were chosen to run in the elections. These two representatives from each fourth and fifth grade classroom then created posters for display and prepared speeches to deliver over the morning announcements telling their peers how they have already given back to the less fortunate as well as to other community members. They also explained how they would lead their school by getting them more involved in charitable events. After all of the speeches were heard, then the entire fourth and fifth grade classes participated in the voting
process. On October 5th, the choices were clear and decisions were made! With the help from PTA and Student Council parent liaison, Angie Malo, the voting process went off without a hitch. The Student Council Officers for 2016 were chosen; President: Sophia V.; Vice President: Grace D.; Secretary: Ryen B.; and Treasurer: Sofia B. These officers will lead the other members of Student Council in events such as a collection for Haiti, a Harvest and Toy Drive for the community as well as Croissant Park Elementary, Pennies for Patients with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and the Relay for Life of Weston. These students love helping others and are eager to share their passion with the rest of the school.
Real-World Presidential Election at Country Isles Elementary
E
lection time has come and gone! This year Country Isles Elementary (CIE) students were given a lesson on the election process that has impressed many! The Student Government created a new and innovative way of producing a real-world election feel for the student body. Prior to the mock election, each teacher randomly selected a state for his/ her class. The classes were then informed about the voting process and popular versus electoral votes. Each teacher discussed the number of electoral votes the class’ state would be allotted based on the population. Then on Election Day, the student council members went to each classroom with the ballots. Each student was able to cast his/her vote for the President of the United States. The votes for each class were then counted, as they left the classrooms the student council members would go back to the ‘headquarters’
where they would share the results with the other officers and color the specified state blue or red, depending on the winning candidate. Once all votes were in and the map was all blue and red, Mrs. Gomez went on CIE TV and presented the highly anticipated election results to the entire student body. Mrs. Gomez showed the map and explained the popular vs. electoral votes and the final result. The Country Isles Elementary mock election results were as follows: Popular Votes: Hillary Clinton – 530; Donald Trump – 324 Electoral Votes: Hillary Clinton – 512; Donald Trump – 26 It was evident that Hillary Clinton won the CIE Election by a landslide. This was a very successful and insightful exercise that taught the CIE students about the importance of the Electoral College and how the election process truly works.

he all new Cypress Bay High School College and Career Center (CCC) opened at the beginning of the 2016–2017 school year. Encompassing an enormous wing of the second floor overlooking the media center, Principal Scott Neely and College Advisor, Shari Bush, felt the expansion was mandatory in order to give every opportunity available for their students to apply, be accepted and afford any college they hope to attend. “With a 98% rate of students that go to college, we felt the need to not only expand the program, but our space as well. We hired another college advisor this year who will also be working with our students to help them realize their college aspirations,” said Mrs. Bush. The CCC offers computers for the students to access Naviance. All Broward County Public Schools are utilizing Naviance for students in grades 6–12 to help with college and career planning This world-class system is designed to inform students, parents, and schools with the following: • Researching careers, colleges, and majors • Finding local and national scholarships and enrichment programs • Exploring students’ career interests, learning styles, personality types, and multiple intelligences • Building resumes and holistic portfolios for job and college applications • Setting goals and developing personalized plans for success • Requesting and sending electronic transcripts • Learning about success skills, financial planning, self-discovery, and building support network
“First we overhauled our Media Center, going 100% state-of-the-art digital, then the CCC was quick to follow. Our vision is now a cutting-edge reality. We are giving our students all of the tools they need to not only navigate the college application process, but also help them find their path and passion,” said Mr. Neely. This year, Cypress Bay seniors have already been accepted to Cornell, Yale, Northwestern, University of Chicago, Vanderbilt, MIT, University of Pennsylvania, Duke, University of Michigan, FSU, UCF, and many more. Cypress Bay CCC has been hosting all of their college visits in the new Center and they are offering many other programs there such as: review of PSAT scores, presentations from the military academies, and classroom visits. “It has been an integral part of my job building relationships with the colleges so that they know when they accept a Cypress Bay student, they are getting the best!” added Mrs. Bush, now in her sixth year as Cypress Bay’s College Advisor. The spacious CCC center offers easy access for students and parents. Open all day long, students are encouraged to visit at any time they are free, such as during lunches and Study Hall. Everything students may need or have access to is there for them and they can stay as long as they need to feel comfortable. Technology combined with hands-on, experienced assistance with essays, applications, letters of recommendation, transcripts, scholarships and more is what Mr. Neely deems as necessary in today’s competitive world of college acceptance. “Only the best at The Bay!” said Mr. Neely.

A
group of 5th grade students at Gator Run Elementary visited Washington, DC and Philadelphia, PA for a week in November. This is the third year that Gator Run has been on this trip, but the first time that Philadelphia was included. In previous years, the school went to Williamsburg, VA along with Washington, DC. 77 students along with eight chaperones explored American history with real-life experiences. Some of the highlights of the trip included: • A visit to Arlington National Cemetery. Lenny Eiglarsh and Sarah Urban, the school’s Student Council President and Vice President, along with Principal Keith Peters, presented a wreath at a ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. • They visited the Newseum and the National Air and Space Museum. While there, students learned about the history of the news, aviation and space. • Boys and girls learned about U.S. history through tours of many DC Memorials. These memorials included: Lincoln, Jefferson, Iwo Jima, Korean War Veterans, Vietnam Veterans, World War II and Martin Luther King, Jr.
By Angela Davis, 5th Grade Teacher
•
Students and chaperones were thrilled to see and walk through the White House and tour the U.S. Capitol. • The trip between both cities was bridged by an NBA game in Philadelphia featuring the Wizards and 76ers, teams from both cities. • Students were introduced to the earliest beginnings of our nation as they learned about the Liberty Bell and Betsy Ross’ home. • We visited the United States Mint where students learned about the history of coin manufacturing. We also paid a visit to the National Constitution Center, where students further explored the U.S Constitution and Declaration of Independence. • They took a bus tour and walking tour of Valley Forge National Historical Park. These tours exposed the students to the daily life of individuals during the American Revolution. • The trip concluded with an interactive experience at the Franklin Institute. While all who attended learned a lot about our country’s beginnings and history, they also developed a bond that will last beyond this school year.

SCHOOLS studies and writing lessons to a real life situation. The students were learning about the characteristics of a good citizen, Veterans Day, and writing thank you letters. After these lessons were taught, the students were all eagerly involved in a community service project. About 160 first graders wrote letters and drew pictures to soldiers serving overseas. The students also donated many items to send to the soldiers. Some of these items included protein bars, powdered drink mixes, beef jerky, gum, and candy. Many of the students even volunteered to donate their Halloween candy. In all, the classes filled six boxes to send overseas. The boxes should arrive just in time for Thanksgiving.
The letters and goodies were shipped to Africa and Kuwait. A fifth grade teacher’s husband from Everglades Elementary School is currently deployed in Africa for one year. He is a captain in the Army National Guard and will be distributing the letters and treats to the soldiers in his company. The other three boxes were sent to Kuwait. Another teacher at the school has a son working as a contractor with United States Army in Kuwait. He will be surprising the soldiers with these gifts and letters from these very special first grade students. In addition to this, the first graders were also asked to honor a family member or close friend that is actively serving or had served in the armed forces. About 30 students participated in this extra credit assignment. These students proudly shared their information about these brave American heroes.

STUDY SKILLS EVERY STUDENT NEEDS By Dr. Raymond J. Huntington
F
or most students, study skills are not inherent. These aptitudes take time to learn and consistent practice to be most effective. Whether your child is a successful student or struggling with one or more subjects, there are certain essential skills that will build a foundation for his or her success in school and life. Here are some of the most critical study skills that children need to learn, all of which Huntington teaches in its advanced study skills tutoring program: Executive functioning – Executive functions are neurologically based skills that require self-regulation or mental processing. Put simply, they help children focus, prioritize tasks, set goals and work toward them, and stay attentive when studying. These “building block” skills allow children to learn successfully because they are better able to control, organize and monitor their time. Executive functioning is an umbrella term for a group of skills that children need to learn effectively, including: • Organization – The ability to keep workspaces tidy and put supplies in places where they can be found easily at any time combined with the ability to stay on top of homework and supplies needed in class and at home. • Time management – The ability to organize one’s time with the aid of a planner/ calendar in order to maximize work time and deter procrastination. • Planning – The ability to manage short-term and long-term to-dos. • Retention – The ability to retain information and retrieve it later when completing a task. • Note taking – As children move from middle to high school, assigned reading increases significantly for multiple subjects. Students need to develop a reliable method of taking notes and make sure their notes record key points covered both
in the textbook and in class. When done correctly, note taking does not take the place of careful listening or reading. Rather, good notes will supplement what children read and hear by summarizing a large amount of information into the essentials and by triggering the brain to recall important facts when needed. • Test taking – A solid study plan is the core of a good test-taking strategy. Children who embrace reliable learning methods and stick to a study schedule are best equipped to perform well on exams, but most need guidance to fine tune their test-taking skills. Huntington’s advanced study skills program emphasizes the development of proven test-taking strategies and methodologies so that children are well equipped to prove what they know when the time comes. The expectations of today’s students are high, yet the daily agenda of most classrooms leaves little time to focus on the development of study skills. And while some children are inherently more organized and studious than others, none are born with the fundamentals to make the very most of study and homework time. Huntington’s advanced study skills program gives children the tools they need to successfully acquire, retrieve, analyze and communicate information. Our program is individualized for children based on their abilities and needs. If you have a child in eighth grade or higher who could use help developing his or her study skills, call us at 1-800-CAN LEARN. We’ll work together to help your child become a more efficient, effective and confident student. About Huntington: Huntington is the tutoring and test prep leader. Its certified tutors provide individualized instruction in reading, phonics, writing, study skills, elementary and middle school math, Algebra through Calculus, Chemistry, and other sciences. It preps for the SAT and ACT, as well as state and standardized exams. Huntington programs develop the skills, confidence, and motivation to help students succeed and meet the needs of Common Core State Standards.
