Dear Readers,
This particular issue marks some pretty exciting milestones for the magazine, our community and for me personally. Since its inception in the City of Weston back in 2002, the Sports & Activities Directory has grown by leaps and bounds, not only in terms of our advertisers and readers, but also with our own internal expansion of growth. This includes a total of 5 areas in Broward County that distribute our print publications, our FREE interactive mobile app for both iPhones and Androids, our relevant social media presence and our convenient digital online editions. Not only are we as a team celebrating our 15th Anniversary, I personally am celebrating my inaugural issue as Publisher for the Weston edition of the Sports & Activities Directory! Having been the Managing Director of Publishing for the all areas for the past four years, I can say that I am so excited and very proud to become a publisher and I cannot think of a better city than Weston to begin my new journey. Not only does the city have the finest residential neighborhoods and a diverse corporate market, as you’ll find in this issue, Weston also has only A-rated public schools and excellent private schools. These statistics, along with the variety of parks and recreational facilities and immaculate community-wide appearance, make Weston a city others strive to replicate. Each issue, we aim to fill these pages with the most accurate and up to date information regarding upcoming local events, community programs, sports and activities registration information, local academic achievements and family health news and provider information. Being the ONLY single source of all this information and more continues to be our main mission. With approximately 80% of our distribution into the schools and backpacks, we are able to keep our advertising prices competitively low, which allows us to donate to non-profit organizations, schools and youth scholarships instead of paying postage. In this issue you will find tons of information on where, when and how to get involved in your community’s upcoming events, activities and programs. You can also find the official Broward County 2017 – 2018 School Calendar, news and updates from local schools, as well as a summary of each Weston area school’s information and F.S.A. scores. Looking for a lighthearted and hilarious back-to-school-themed read? Check out our Q&A with Class Mom author, Laurie Gelman. The interview with the author and the novel itself will not disappoint! Thank you to all of our amazing advertisers and a special thanks to our readers for letting them know you found them here, in the Sports & Activities Directory! If you have not already, be sure to download our full interactive FREE mobile app on your iPhone or Android device, follow us on social media and view our digital editions, complete with clickable and shareable links, on our website at sportsandactivities.com. I’m so excited to bring you my first issue as the Publisher for Weston and on behalf of the Sports & Activities team – THANK YOU for 15 years of continued support in Weston! All the Best,
Melissa Harless
Special thank you to our Issue Sponsor

Dear Weston Residents,
10
Summer is upon us, and with all the fun and carefree days that it can bring, in Florida it also marks the arrival of hurricane season. It’s been over a decade since a hurricane struck south Florida. We dodged the proverbial bullet last year when Hurricane Matthew, the first Category 5 storm to develop in the Atlantic since 2007, caused widespread devastation in the Western Atlantic before hugging the coastline of Florida, eventually making landfall in South Carolina. Hurricane Matthew caused one million Floridians to lose power and over 43 deaths were attributed to the storm in the U.S. alone. Around the country, you can view news footage of the devastation caused by floods or tornados. Disasters happen and you need to be as prepared as possible. We challenge our residents and businesses to be Weston Ready – to take storm preparation as seriously as we do in city government. Hurricane preparedness is key and residents must remember the first 72 are up to you. This means you need supplies on-hand to be self-sufficient for your entire family for a minimum of three days. You can find preparedness checklists just about anywhere, including the City’s website. Pick up extra water, batteries and food goods each time you shop – don’t wait until a storm approaches. You can donate unused food items to the local Harvest Drive or food pantry in mid-November. It is essential to have a family and/or business communication plan in place PRIOR to an emergency. A great resource is www.Ready.gov. Your phone numbers should be registered with Weston’s CodeRED Emergency Notification System. This system is used strictly for emergency notifications and after-emergency information. Your contact information is confidential and cannot be shared. Sign up today by clicking on the CodeRED Enrollment link on the City’s homepage at WestonFl.org or call 954-385-2000 and a City staff member will register you. For those on social media, the City’s Twitter account, @CityofWeston, provides a wealth of city and hurricane preparedness information. New this year is @WestonFLAlert, which is strictly for ‘notifications of an urgent nature or that will impact persons, property or travel’ and we encourage you to place an audible alert on this Twitter account. Speaking of social media, don’t use it to inadvertently advertise your out-of-town plans. What we do recommend is to register for the BSO HomeWatch Program. They will send personnel by your home and perform perimeter checks. To register, call BSO Weston at 954-389-2010 or download the application on our website. Additional tips: ask a trusted neighbor to keep an eye on your home, suspend mail and newspaper delivery, have lights on in the house, and lock the door that enters your home from inside the garage. Summer weather also brings increased activities in and around water. Be sure to designate a “Water Watcher” to keep an eye on any children in the pool or other water body. Everyone should learn how to swim. Weston was awarded the Water Smart Weston designation by the Florida Department of Health for efforts in drowning prevention education, but education is an ongoing effort. All Broward County residents ages 6 months to 4 years qualify for a coupon of $40 toward swim lessons. Visit our website under Water/Pool Safety and click on the swim coupon. An additional lifesaving element: CPR. Weston BSO Fire Rescue offers free CPR training year-round, because anytime is the perfect time to learn to save a life. It’s summer, enjoy the slower pace and apply that to your driving speed as well. With schools in recess, more children are out and about in neighborhoods. Take extra precautions and watch for children, take your time and be safe. Be safe, be prepared… and have fun! Your City Commission will take a short recess and will be back in full swing with budget reviews and public meetings. The public hearing dates for the proposed Weston budgets are set for Wednesday, September 13th and Monday, September 25, 2017 at 7 PM at Weston City Hall. Please confirm dates/times at WestonFL.org/Events. We welcomeº your input. Until next time…
Mayor Daniel J. Stermer City of Weston

Children who learn how to swim at a young age are reaching many developmental milestones earlier than the norm. Research from the Griffith Institute not only shows that taking swimming lessons can make a difference in saving young children’s lives but the benefits are measurable. Children who start swimming lessons early not only become smarter, but build their social, emotional, and physical components. n July 27, 2017, Doug Bartel, Senior Director of External Relations for Florida Blue, also a YMCA Board Member, stood at the podium at the Weston YMCA pool deck surrounded by swimming children and proudly announced a donation of over $300,000 that will provide free swim lessons and mobile aquatics programs for over 5,000 children and families. The YMCA of South Florida, YMCA of South Palm Beach County and YMCA of Florida’s First Coast will each benefit with a $100,000 grant. Sheryl Woods, CEO & President, YMCA of South Florida noted that while they teach 30,000 lessons in their
pools, and the Mobile Aquatics unit reaches another 600, for all who signed up, there are probably ten times more who don’t know how to swim. Sheryl stated, “ALL children should be given the opportunity to learn how to swim.” Weston Mayor Daniel Stermer thanked all involved in this critical cause, noting the extensive access to waterbodies and pools within south Florida. Drowning is a preventable tragedy. Broward and Miami-Dade counties lead the nation in accidental drowning among infants and small children. The YMCA and its partners aim to change that statistic.

DIRECTORY FUTSOC (FUTbol – SOCcer) is the name of one of the most successful clubs
in South Florida, the State of Florida, and the entire U.S. over the past seventeen years. It is the hidden gem in the soccer rich City of Weston. Born of an idea to truly focus entirely all the efforts and objectives of the club on the TRUE development and success of the fine young student athletes who comprise their specialized club, FUTSOC has developed a methodology which combines all the modern elements of the game of this generation, without sacrificing the proven principles and values which so strongly forged individuals in prior ones. FUTSOC is a deliberately small, but greatly successful club, which is run by a group of highly dedicated mentors, coaches and an outstanding support staff. Collectively, they have over 110 years of coaching experience at all youth and amateur levels of the game. Addressing the most significant concerns, in addition to the technical and tactical elements, the club also nurtures the more important personal values of each young life… self–esteem, respect, dedication, sacrifice, friendship, trust, passion, love, camaraderie, sportsmanship and humility. When these critical virtues and qualities form the foundation of any human being, especially in a young man, the personal growth is exponential. It is permanent and undoubtedly inclusive of a wider scope of life applications for the present and the future…in sport and otherwise. It is indisputable that FUTSOC has been synonymous with proven excellence over the past decades due to a great adherence to those values and principles that they insistently
and consistently stress on and off the field of play. With three, five-year cycles of their development program (Project: ENIGMA) already completed, these have yielded proven, nationally recognized results. Three of those teams ended among the top ranked teams in the nation, defeating many of the much larger soccer clubs all over the U.S. and abroad, and many USSF Soccer Development Academies they competed against. Of greater significance, over one hundred fifty (150) students of Futsoc have attained scholarships at universities and colleges throughout the country. Most recently in 2016, the City of Weston honored the club with a special proclamation for ENIGMA, for its final season ranking as the No. 1 boys U18/19 team in the nation, according to the prestigious youth soccer ranking services. The year 2017 resulted in another top 10-season performance, with eight additional players accepting college scholarships and pro placements. The club is set up to maximize the development progression of their youths, adhering to its FUTSOC DEVELOPMENTAL MATRIX and is structured, as follows: BAMBINOS ACADEMY (U7 – U10) / YOUTH ACADEMY (U11 – U19) / AMATEUR ACADEMY (U20 – U23). At FUTSOC, the focus is NOT exclusively on winning, but rather in providing its players with the necessary and mandatory tools to not only succeed in this magical game of FUTbol – SOCcer, but also, to grow, to develop and mature into stand-out young men in our society. For full article & information, visit: www.futsoc.club, call 954-812-7991 or email director@futsoc.club or j.tamayo@futsoc.club.

Going back to school after summer vacation can be a difficult adjustment
for some. Here are some tips for helping manage that back to school anxiety. • Get back into a routine by implementing bedtimes, meal planning, and setting out clothes the night the before. • Don‘t wait for the last minute to do school supply and new clothes shopping. • Arrange play dates with school friends. Research shows that the presence of familiar peers during school transitions can improve children’s academic and emotional adjustment. • Have a trial run. If your child is starting at a new school, walk through the school with them before school starts to help get acquainted. Mapping out classrooms and finding lockers in advance can help an older child, and for younger kids it can be helpful to rehearse the drop off and spend time on the playground. • Validate and acknowledge your child’s anxiety. Talk about their fears and feelings. • Make plans and role play dealing with anxiety-inducing situations. Have your child act out the part of a strict teacher or bullying classmate, and then model appropriate responses. • Help manage your children’s commitments. Taking on many extracurricular activities before the school year starts can become overwhelming.

atthew Futterman is the author of “Players: The Story of Sports and Money and the Visionaries Who Fought to Create a Revolution.” His 2016 book is a history of the changes that saw professional athletes go from modestly paid employees of the 1950s who needed off-season jobs, to today’s multimillionaire entrepreneurs building their “brands” with endorsements, clothing lines and other enterprises. So when Arnold Palmer, one of the first athlete-entrepreneurs, died in September 2016 at the age of 87, Futterman wrote a remembrance of the iconic golfer for the Wall Street Journal. Futterman began his essay with a question, then answered it:
What do you think about when you think about Arnold Palmer? This is what I think about: a measly life insurance policy that transformed the business of sports and made possible the flow of millions of dollars to modern athletes like Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, and LeBron James. Here’s the rest of the story: In the winter of 1961, Arnold Palmer was a 31-year-old professional golfer who had won the Masters and U.S. Open the previous summer, and was just beginning to become a household name. Seven years previous, Palmer had signed (without legal counsel) what Futterman characterized as “an absurdly lopsided and exploitive” 10-year endorsement agreement with a sports equipment company. Now, in light of his performance and notoriety, Palmer wanted to renegotiate his contract, getting a larger percentage from the sale of balls and clubs that had his name on them. The sporting goods company agreed, but wanted to lock Palmer in for another 20 years. Palmer was okay with the length of the contract, but with a stipulation: He wanted a life insurance policy, and he wanted the company to pay for it. Futterman explains: He was 31-years-old, with two daughters and a wife to think about, and he knew he couldn’t stake his financial future on the paltry prize money available in golf in those days. Plus, he was well aware that few things were as impermanent as the career of a professional athlete. Sure, he was the defending Masters and U.S. Open champ, but the yips or a balky back could take it all away in a heartbeat.
Palmer wanted a benefit similar to those that corporations often give their key employees, an executive compensation agreement built around life insurance to provide a measure of financial security whether he lived, died or became disabled. Palmer felt he deserved such consideration because, while he might not be an executive, his involvement was a key component in the company’s success. The annual premium for the policy was $880 – about $7,000 today – adjusted for inflation, and not a lot of money then or now. At today’s rates, the premium would result in an insurance benefit of somewhere near $1 million, which is substantial, but not exorbitant. Amazingly, the sporting goods CEO refused, saying no golfer deserved something that most of the company’s executives didn’t even have. The CEO figured Palmer was in no position to turn down two decades of guaranteed income over something so small. But according to Futterman, “The life insurance policy was his line in the sand, the measure of whether this company that supposedly cared so much about him actually respected him as a professional.” Palmer broke off negotiations, and fulfilled the final three years of his original contract, and started a unique business relationship with Mark McCormack, the founder of International Marketing Group (IMG). With IMG’s guidance, Palmer produced his own line of golf equipment and apparel, designed golf courses, and became a celebrity pitchman for everything from motor oil to soft drinks. The IMG template that began with Palmer expanded from athletes to entertainers and completely changed the financial landscape of both fields. Sports and entertainment became “industries,” and the “stars” became entrepreneurs and business owners. This true story has several interesting takeaways regarding life insurance. Palmer recognized the tenuous nature of his income, and his long-term financial obligations to his family, and he saw permanent life insurance as a solution to those challenges. The executive compensation agreement idea Palmer proposed to satisfy his desire for life insurance is still used today by many companies to retain valuable talent. A lot of things have changed over the past six decades, but the essential form, function and value of life insurance has remained remarkably constant.

Pediatric Occupational Therapists (OTs) are life builders for children whose
lives have been raided by disability especially those with Autism and Cerebral Palsy. OTs assist these individuals to be free of their isolation, and help them to share their abilities with others. Osho says, “Nobody is superior, nobody is inferior, but nobody is equal either. People are simply unique. You are you, I am I.” OTs do not attempt to make clients like everyone else. We embrace their strengths, and work on the areas that are weakened which affect their everyday functioning. If a child has difficulty controlling his or her self-stimulating behaviors, we teach them how to satisfy that crave in supplementary ways so that it does not affect their functioning and those around them. We want them to share their uniqueness. If a child with Cerebral Palsy demonstrates impairments with his or her motor control and coordination skills which affect his or her activities of daily living including dressing, bathing, and social interaction skills, occupational therapist help remediate deficits and train clients and caregivers on compensatory techniques as needed in order to lead fulfilling lives. Various children with Autism may miss sensory information from the environment that provide signals about what is going on in their surroundings and may be referred to as having poor registration. The brain may not be getting what it needs to produce appropriate responses. Other children may be referred to as having seeking behavior. These individuals are characteristically active and continuously engaged in their environments. They add sensory input to every experience in daily life. They may appear impulsive and the consideration for safety when playing may be absent. Some children with Autism may display hypersensitivities to sounds, sights, smells, tastes, and textures. These children may have sensitivity behavior. They have over-reactive neural systems that make them aware of every stimulus that becomes available, and do not have the appropriate ability to adjust to these stimuli. Children may also present as having avoiding behavior which represent those who may engage in disruptive behaviors especially in situations where they know they are having difficulty with. They avoid circumstances by either withdrawing or participating in emotional outbursts that enable them to get out of the situation. The child may appear
stubborn and controlling and prefer routines without any sudden changes. The child is creating a state to limit sensory input to those events that are known and therefore easy for the nervous system to interpret. There is not a cookie-cutter treatment plan for these exceptional children. OTs provide the children and caregivers with individualized recipes (treatment plans) called a sensory diet with ingredients (tools) to assist the child to regulate his or her sensory system for success at home, school, and in the community. Children with Cerebral Palsy characteristically demonstrate deficits with reflex, body movement, muscle tone, balance, posture, muscle coordination, and receiving and responding to information through the senses. These complications can considerably impair a child’s ability to successfully participate in his or her activities of daily living including, dressing, feeding, sitting, standing, socializing, and much more. These limitations can lead to isolation. OTs encompass the skills necessary to improve their posture, reduce muscle tone and improve their range of motion. OTs will improve a child’s self-care skills, visual motor skills, handwriting skills, and the ability to navigate their environment. These skills are imperative to improve a child’s functional independence to replace isolation into inclusion. But, treatment does not end in the therapy clinic. A comprehensive home exercise and activities program and family education are vital to this process. OTs are knowledgeable in numerous areas in pediatric care. The focus is on improving a child’s functional independence. Through individualized treatment strategies and taking a family-centered approach, limitations can be altered into great expectations. he Science Olympiad is a national K–12 organization that hosts a competition involving an ever-changing number rigorous and standards based of STEM challenges. These competitions are separated into elementary, middle and high school events. This year Manatee Bay Elementary brought two 5th grade teams of up to 12 students each to complete with other teams across the tri-county area on the Florida Atlantic University campus in Boca Raton. There were over 24 teams who competed in challenges such as Egg Drop, Bridge Building, Mystery Powders, Starry Starry Night and Picture This; just to name a few. Each year, 12-13 events are chosen for the students to study, research, and practice and then compete with students from all over South Florida. In

addition to the competition in Boca Raton, there is another one in Orlando. The students have so much fun exploring all the new material that they don’t realize they are actually learning. For those students who are involved in Science Olympiad, a lot of their parents volunteer their time to come in and help work with small groups of students. They also transport their children to the competition and make it a great community event right on the Florida Atlantic University campus. This year one of the teams placed third all-around and another team came in fourth all-around. Many of the students from both teams earned individual medals as well. The Science Olympiad combines healthy competition, teamwork, and experiences these children will not soon forget.
COUNTRY ISLES ELEMENTARY IS IN FULL BLOOM! C
By Vanessa Cox, Assistant Principal & Barbara McDermott, Literacy Coach
ountry Isles Elementary welcomes back our students for the 2017–2018 school year. Our school community is focused on providing a warm learning environment for
our students. We believe that the environment shapes the learner, both in and out of the classroom, and learners influence their environment. At Country Isles Elementary, we believe that Social-Emotional Learning is essential to having a successful school year. Within this process, it is critical that our students continue to show their Country Isles P.R.I.D.E. (P-Positive Attitudes, R-Respect, I-Integrity, D-Drive to do the Right Thing, E-Effort Towards Learning). This enables students to feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. Our students will also develop a growth mindset, believing that their abilities can be strengthened with hard work and dedication. Having a growth mindset allows students to set goals for themselves and create a love of learning, inviting challenges. Embracing a growth mindset helps students feel empowered and committed. The faculty and staff at Country Isles Elementary believe that brains and talent are the starting point to developing students’ potential, helping them to strive to be the best that they can be. Last school year brought many opportunities for faculty, staff, students, parents and
community leaders to be a part of our positive learning environment. Teachers put their artistic talents to work creating this environment, as they designed their own flowerpots to place all around our school. Country Isles PTA donated the funds to purchase a variety of plants to add to the beauty of our campus. During the school year, students eagerly assisted their teachers with maintaining the plants by watering them daily. When holding an elementary principal meeting at Country Isles, many principals commented on how warm and inviting our school felt because of the cheerful flowerpots. This year, we will build on Broward County Public Schools’ character education. Students who “pay it forward” will be recognized weekly on the televised morning announcements. Our PTA is sponsoring a school-wide project based on Linda Kranz’s book, Only One You. Her book explores our great, big world and how we can make it a better place. School-wide, teachers will assist students in creating their own special rock to depict themselves. Individual rocks will be placed throughout the school to form our Country Isles Rock River. This river reflects our journey in making our school and the world a better place. The Rock River, in addition to our flowerpots, will display how Country Isles is in full bloom for the 2017–2018 school year. We are looking forward to a wonderful school year!

C
hange is the only constant in the universe. As parents we intuitively understand this, because raising our children is a series of progressive changes. Each change is more amazing than the last. The mileposts in our child’s development are all changes. Our babies respond to our voices, and we respond to their cries. We smile at our babies and they return the smile. We speak to them and before they can form words they try to reply. On one very important day our baby speaks his first word. Our baby learns to sit up, crawl and eventually walk, and is longer a baby. These changes are how we measure our child’s development. Transitions – stopping one activity and starting up a new one - can be difficult for toddlers. One of the reasons transitions are hard for your toddler is because he has a Zen concept of time: there is only the now and the future does not exist. Try telling your toddler that he can play later, but right now you have to go to the grocery store, or he can have a cookie later! Developmentally the problem is twofold: initially toddlers don’t understand that when Mommy takes him to preschool for the first time that Mommy will be coming back, and they don’t have the verbal skills yet to communicate their fears. That can lead to anxiety, tears and outbursts. Change and new beginnings can be challenging for children and their parents, but parents can help ease our child’s separation anxiety when they begin preschool. I know: I am a parent, teacher and now a director, and I did
it all wrong before I knew better. Learn from my mistakes. Our children are very sensitive to our moods, so if your child senses your anxiety about the first day of school, he will be anxious too. Walk your son to class, give him a kiss – you may want to develop a ritual- “Mommy will give you three butterfly kisses when you start school and I will always come back and give you three butterfly kisses after your nap when school is over.” It is natural to cry, but don’t cry until you have turned away. When you leave, fight the urge to peek in the window because long goodbyes are more painful and create a sense of uncertainty in your toddler. Whether you are managing employees, clients or toddlers, the most important thing is to set expectations. Use simple words and explain to your child, for example, “After your nap (or lunch) Mommy will be here to take you home.” You may want to develop a routine at home before leaving for school. Rather than announcing that you are leaving in ten minutes because toddlers do not have a sense of time, let her set a timer for ten minutes every day. Tell her, “Every day before you go to school you and Mommy have things to do. We both have breakfast, use the potty, get dressed and then you play until you hear the timer ring. Then we put away your toys, put on your shoes, and go to school together.” Teachers are very effective at helping with transition. Talk to your child’s teacher and ask her to work with you by reading a book or singing a song when they arrive to establish an arrival routine. Ask your teacher to remind your child that “Mommy always comes back after your lunch or nap”. You may want your child to bring a “lovey”, a favorite stuffed animal from home. Change is growth and our children will be changing and growing for a long time. Working together we can help ease the anxiety and share the joy.

with great pride that I welcome you to the 2017/18 school year. We are excited for the first day of classes on Monday, August 21, 2017. Our District’s commitment to excellence in education continues to make BCPS a national leader. In 2017, U.S. News & World Report ranked 19 of the District’s high schools among the best in the nation, and The Washington Post recognized 25 BCPS schools in its report on America’s Most Challenging High Schools. In addition, our District recently received two impressive designations. BCPS earned prestigious Districtwide re-accreditation from AdvancEd, signifying to the community that our District is meeting the highest standards in education. Our District was also named a Great District for Great Teachers by the National Council on Teacher Quality – a true testament to our amazing teachers and our dedication to providing students with high-quality instruction. Our innovative District schools offer incredible learning opportunities and focus on ensuring all students are college and career ready. BCPS offers a wide variety of programs to meet students’ interests and help them develop a lifelong love of learning. We are engaging students in ways that motivate them to learn and excel, with rigorous academic courses; award-winning magnet and innovative programs; dual language programs to promote biliteracy and academic achievement; and chess for second grade students to develop their critical thinking skills. We are reimagining education with an emphasis on offering a variety of academic enrichment programs and elective courses at every level. We know that technology is a critical part of 21st century learning. Our schools now have more computers and technology resources to support our students’ education. Through the District’s SMART bond technology initiative, more than 83,300 new computer devices are now installed in our schools, bringing the District’s student to computer ratio to an average of 2:1, an even lower ratio than the original goal of 3.5:1. The installation of the new computers was completed ahead of schedule and under budget – and the new computers are ready for students in 2017/18.
In the upcoming school year, BCPS continues to focus on technology in the classroom to support instruction. BCPS will: • Expand our Digital Classrooms initiative, which provides personalized, blended learning environments with a one-to-one student to computer ratio. Across BCPS, schools participating in this unique program will reach more students as the program grows to include additional grade levels and classrooms. • Increase the number of schools offering the Global Scholars program to 19 schools. This program connects BCPS students with their peers around the world as they share information and learn about cultures and important global issues. • Launch new opportunities for students to participate in computer science courses. Beginning this year, middle school students at 24 schools can now take a high school level computer science course through our partnership with Code.org. Computer science courses, curriculum and activities continue to be offered at 100 percent of our schools. BCPS also offers the largest debate and JROTC programs in the country; opportunities for students to earn industry certifications in numerous career industries; advanced academic programs allowing students to earn college credits; virtual education options; Montessori programs; and award-winning music and arts programs. Our schools also provide outstanding athletic programs, with sports expanding in our middle schools in 2017/18 to include golf and cross country. Our schools are preparing students for their futures and inspiring them to follow their dreams. As we look forward to the 2017/18 school year and beyond, I encourage you to learn more about our District – and all that our schools offer – by visiting our website, browardschools.com. On behalf of our teachers, administrators and staff, we hope students enjoyed the summer break and are ready for another successful school year! Thank you for partnering with us in your child’s education.

The talent, costumes, and joy that it brings to everyone is incomparable. It is unbelievable and only gets better every year,” Neita remarked. The celebration included performances from kindergarten through fifth grade classes representing the cultures of Mexico, Sweden, Puerto Rico, South Africa, Cuba, USA, Venezuela, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Polynesia, Latin America, and Peru. The talent, costumes, and attention to detail were a testament to the time students and teachers devoted to perfecting their performances. Parents were unanimously overwhelmed by the quality of the program. According to parent Jeannette Villasmil, “The multicultural show was spectacular! I enjoyed experiencing the flavors of each country through music and dance.” Students eagerly participated in the show. Third grader Sophia Perez Clavijo loved mastering the tango. “It was fun learing how people dance in another country and the costume made it extra special,” she said. The show is truly a memorable event that brings EPE students and families together to celebrate world cultures.

First grade dual language teacher Kristin Violante assumed the title of Program Director five years ago. “This is a great opportunity for students to showcase their talents and with the great diversity that we have, it’s the perfect vehicle to share the various cultures amongst our school population,” Violante shared. It’s hard to believe, but each year it gets bigger and better! This year was the first time primary and intermediate grades hosted the events separately. “Teachers really stepped up this year and wanted to participate in the show more than ever,” Violante explained. “With the increased participation and to accommodate the crowds, we divided the event into two separate occasions, yet there was standing room only during the family performances,” Violante stated. Assistant Principal Willow Rosado added, “In all the years I have attended this remarkable event, I have never seen such an enormous parent turnout.” Intern Assistant Principal Cristina Deatherage was a first-time attendee. “The amount of talent at Eagle Point is out of this world!” she exclaimed. “It was an amazing show that captured different cultures in an authentic and engaging manner. strong computer science community within BCPS. Computer science courses, curriculum and activities are now offered in 100 percent of District schools, thanks to support from partners such as Code.org, the National Science Foundation, Google and the Broward Education Foundation. In 2016, the White House also recognized BCPS for its commitment to increasing computer science in schools. “We are incredibly excited to be chosen by the Robotics Education & Competition Foundation and NASA for this grant,” said Dr. Lisa Milenkovic, STEM+C supervisor with the District’s Applied Learning Department. “The funding supports our efforts to expand opportunities for students to experience and learn about computer science, and understand how the skills they are learning can be utilized in many different career paths.” To learn more about the REC Foundation and NASA grant, contact Dr. Lisa Milenkovic, BCPS Applied Learning Department, at 754-321-1851. roward County Public Schools (BCPS) is honored to be selected for a grant by the Robotics Education & Competition (REC) Foundation and NASA, which will provide robotics equipment, materials and teacher professional development for all District schools. The grant, valued at approximately $227,000, will be implemented over the next four years. During the 2017/18 school year – the first year of the grant – the new robotic equipment and resources will enhance STEM+Computer Science (STEM+C) opportunities currently offered at 57 schools across the District, including 36 elementary schools, 12 middle schools and nine high schools. Additional schools will be added each year of the grant. The focus is on aligning robotics instruction among feeder schools within the District’s Innovation Zones, to provide seamless opportunities for students to build upon their skills as they transition from elementary school to middle and high schools. Early introduction to STEM+C, including robotics, is the foundation of the District’s ongoing #BrowardCODES initiative, which is dedicated to building a

Congratulations to four additional Broward County
68
Public Schools (BCPS) high school seniors announced today by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation as winners of the National Merit Scholarships financed by U.S. colleges and universities. These Merit Scholar designees join the 23 BCPS students and over 3,200 other College-sponsored award recipients who were announced in June. Officials at each sponsor college selected scholarship winners from among the finalists in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program who will attend their institution. These College-sponsored awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship.
Congratulations to the following BCPS Collegesponsored National Merit Scholarship winners: • • •

“These outstanding students have demonstrated remarkable academic success and we are extremely proud of their accomplishments,” said BCPS Superintendent Robert W. Runcie. “Our scholars worked incredibly hard to earn these prestigious scholarships, and we wish them all the best as they prepare for college and their futures.”
Cypress Bay Celebrates HOPE DAY T
he Cypress Bay High School’s Helping Overcome Problems Effectively (HOPE) club hosted its annual “HOPE Day” event on March 22 in the courtyard. The purpose of the event was to educate students on mental illnesses and suicide prevention. “This day is so important for students because it gets what our club is all about across to the whole student body,” junior and Co-Vice President Payton Liberto said. “It raises awareness to the kinds of mental health issues that are out there so people can know about them, how to cope with them and recognize the signs of them.” Co-president and sophomore Jonathon Galante said every year this event becomes more and more important as students still do not have knowledge about or understand these mental illnesses. “Mental health awareness and suicide prevention are things that most people don’t consider real or prevalent until it happens to them,” Galante said. “The first step is educating yourself so you can educate others. Now that I myself have done that, I am more prepared than ever to guide others.” At the event, HOPE officers organized a booth where statistics about suicide were presented to students. Galante said this booth was essential to have because students must be informed about the topic for prevention. “I, myself, have experienced losing a friend to suicide and I think that until you really experience it, people do not understand that it is real and happening,” he said. “The statistic is that there are 120 suicides every day, which is pretty crazy. In order to prevent this, it is not

only important to talk about suicides themselves, but also what causes them and the mental aspects behind them.” In addition to the informational booth, freshman Megan Black volunteered at a booth where HOPE commemorated people who have completed suicide. This included names of actors and students in Broward County. Students at this booth had the chance to write down names of people they know who have completed suicide and light a candle in honor of them. “One part of HOPE is about suicide, so this booth is important because it acknowledges them and makes sure that they are never forgotten,” Black said. This year, members of HOPE walked around the courtyard and cafeteria approaching students and talking to them about certain mental health related issues. Liberto walked around wearing a sign that denoted ‘Ask me about anxiety.’ “I did this because I myself have struggled from anxiety in the past and I want to let people know that there are ways of coping with it. I wanted students to know that it is not completely uncommon and that there are more people like them,” she said. Liberto said she felt happy educating students in knowing these mental health topics and ways to recognize signs of them. “This event was a huge success because a lot of people said they were going to join HOPE and at our last meeting, there were a bunch of new members,” Liberto said. “It really proved that we got the word across and more people are now educated about these important topics.”
96% of Innovative District Schools Earn an A, B or C from the State In June, the Florida Department of Education released 2017 school grades and ensure we are meeting the diverse needs of students and families. We are for all schools. Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) results show continued improvements across the District. Among the highlights in the 2017 results: 96 percent of innovative District schools earned an “A,” “B” or “C.” • 95 percent of innovative District schools maintained or increased their letter grade. • 59 innovative District schools earned an “A”, an increase from 41 in 2016. Of these schools, 39 maintained their “A” from 2016. • 13 innovative District schools increased by two or more letter grades. • BCPS reduced the number of District schools earning a “D” or “F.” Only two District schools earned an “F,” compared to 10 in 2016. Six schools earned a “D,” compared to 29 the prior year. • Overall, BCPS earned a District grade of “B” for the fourth year in a row. In addition: • BCPS exceeded the state’s average for the percentage of “A” schools in 2017. • 85 percent of innovative District schools in the state’s “turnaround” status

ack to School is always one of the most exciting times of the year for Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) students and families, filled with anticipation for a year of incredible learning opportunities, activities, events and special times with friends. Last school year was a great success, and our staff members are preparing now to ensure the upcoming school year is packed with engaging programs and initiatives across every grade level. As a School Board member and resident of the community, I have the privilege of visiting schools and classrooms to see first-hand the great work taking place in our schools. I am always inspired by our amazing students and our outstanding teachers, administrators and staff members. Our District’s welcoming culture, diversity and learning opportunities provide students the best educational excellence. The Dual Language program provides students with the opportunity to become fully bilingual in English and a target language of Spanish or French. The program continues to expand and will reach 41 schools during this school year. To equip students with the needed global linguistic, cultural and communicative skills for the 21st century workplace, our District offers the Seal of Biliteracy for graduating high school students who have attained a high level of competency in one or more languages, in addition to English. The seal recognizes rich and diverse language assets and promotes the development of cross-cultural understanding. We are incredibly grateful for our many community partners who provide tremendous support and join us to create the best educational experiences for our students, both in and out of the classroom. Thanks to a District partnership with JetBlue

T
he timing couldn’t be better for this laughout-loud book to hit the stores as the new school year begins! “Class Mom”, a novel by Laurie Gelman, will absolutely tickle the funny bone of any parent who has dabbled or immersed themselves in volunteering at their school. Filled with sarcasm, irreverence and hilarious casual commentary, you cannot put this book down. Gelman delivers a diverse cast of fictional characters, yet as their personalities and quirks unfold, you will identify each one with someone you know or perhaps catch a glimpse of yourself. A little over a year ago, Laurie was just finishing her second attempt at a novel when we had a chance to catch up. After many decades
of not seeing each other (we went to high school together), I was lucky enough for her to share her rough draft of “Class Mom” with the thought that I might be able to provide some constructive feedback. After breezing through it in a day, I just simply commented, “Hilarious!” Inspired by raising two daughters in New York City schools where volunteering is mandatory, Laurie found great humor in the idiosyncrasies of her co-volunteers, as well as herself, in these roles. Dealing with fundraisers, student allergies, cooperative communication with uncooperative volunteers, teachers, and a few surprises along the way keeps the main character, Jen Dixon, with plenty of material for comedy. Her humor,
sarcasm and ways of getting things done may be lost on the class parents, but definitely not on the readers. Jen’s “fresh” take on her Kindergarten class mom role is based on the fact that she already went through the parenting rodeo with her two daughters who are now in their 20’s. Flash forward 15 years, and now Jen has a 5-year old son, Max. You’ve got the gist, older moms see things a bit differently than younger, first-time moms. Look for Laurie Gelman on a “Class Mom” book tour and likely on a few talk shows, she’s got a connection or two hundred there (as you will see in About the Author). “Class Mom” was released on Amazon.com on August 1st and will surely be the buzz for all of us moms as school resumes.
Bergeron, worked on Good Morning America and the CBS Early Show. Working in the entertainment industry led Laurie to her husband, Michael Gelman, the executive producer of Live with Kelly and Ryan (originally Live with Regis and Kathie Lee). Laurie and Michael married in June, 2000, and have two daughters Jamie (age 16) and Misha (age 13). Once Laurie became a mom, she found a perfect fit to balance career and parenting on two separate Canadian-based talk shows, The Mom Show and Doctor in the House. Currently, she is a freelance writer and novelist while doing what she loves most, raising her daughters. They live in Manhattan and spend time in Plantation, Florida and The Hamptons, New York.
SCHOOLS
L
aurie Hibberd Gelman was born in 1964 in Ottawa Canada, however, she was raised right here in the Plantation area and is an alumni of American Heritage School. After high school, she went to Ryerson University in Toronto and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. Laurie’s professional career started in broadcasting as a news writer, traffic reporter, entertainment reporter for CKFM radio in Toronto. In the early 90‘s, Laurie returned to South Florida; you may remember her as “The Buzz” entertainment reporter for WSVN-TV in Miami. As her career continued to blossom, she co-hosted the Fox After Breakfast talk show on Fox network with Tom
WHAT DO YOU WANT YOUR READERS TO WALK AWAY WITH WHEN THEY FINISH “CLASS MOM”? A few laughs and the belief that I should win the Pulitzer Prize for humor! Actually, just a few laughs is good. WHEN DID THE INSPIRATION FOR THE BOOK COME ABOUT? ANY CATALYST THAT SAT YOU DOWN TO WRITE IT? After a failed attempt at a children’s book my agent suggested I write about the one thing I was constantly complaining about - my job as class mom for my daughter’s 3rd grade class. I didn’t realize how much I talked about it until he pointed it out.
WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE AND LEAST FAVORITE CHARACTER IN “CLASS MOM”? My most favorite character to write is Jen. Her inner dialogue is hilarious and she is flawed, but fun. My least favorite is Kim Fancy. She represents far too many mothers that I actually know and don’t admire.
AS FAR AS WRITING A NOVEL, IT SEEMS DAUNTING TO TAKE A STORY IDEA TO A PUBLISHED BOOK. DID YOU ENJOY THE PROCESS? They say the joy is in the journey and for me, it really was. Once I figured out that I was going to have to treat this like a job or I would never finish, it became as much a part of my day as making dinner or taking a shower. I knew that for better or worse I had to sit down for at least 2 hours every day and either write or rewrite. And just like any job, some days were good and some days were bad. It took about 2 years to write it and another year to make the changes the publisher wanted and have it transformed into a book. The hardest part was being told I had to add another plot line into my perfectly finished book. I tore my hair out for about 4 months trying to make that happen...and I finally did.
ARE YOU PLANNING ANY BOOK SIGNINGS OR INTERVIEWS? Book tour is coming - not sure where or when, but you can be damned sure I will be on at least one daytime talk show or there will be no joy in Gelmanville tonight.
ARE MORE BOOKS OF LIKE STYLE ROLLING AROUND IN YOUR HEAD? Actually, I’m writing the sequel to Class Mom right now (not that anyone has asked for it). I had more to say about my hero, Jen, and her life and wanted to get it down on paper. I had been writing a more serious book, but I took a break because it was really getting me down. Getting back to the “Class Mom” characters is like being at a reunion with old friends. HAVE YOUR KIDS READ THE BOOK? WHAT ARE THEIR COMMENTS? My older one, Jamie, read it and really loved it although I don’t think she understood many of the pop culture references (“Mom, who is Michael Hutchence?”). My younger one, Misha really wants to, but I’m holding her off for now. She doesn’t need to know how snarky I really am just yet. DID MICHAEL GIVE FEEDBACK DURING THE PROCESS? Michael never asked to read it until it was finished. When he did, his comment was, “This is actually really good.” High praise from Gelman. Since then he has been my number one PR agent. He talks about “Class Mom” to whoever will listen. Luckily, a lot of people listen to him.
WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES AND THINGS YOU DO IN YOUR DOWN TIME? I enjoy working out a lot. Its great thinking time and keeps me healthy. I spin, do pilates and yoga. I also live in one of the best walking cities in the world, so I do a lot of that, too. I enjoy reading when I’m not trying to write, and Michael and I collect wine. And who am I kidding? I Netflicks and chill all the time. My latest obsession is The Crown.
HAND WRITE OR COMPUTER OR BOTH? I hand wrote for years and years, but now that I finally write on a computer, I can’t go back!

WHAT VOLUNTEER ROLES IN YOUR KIDS’ SCHOOLS DID YOU ACTUALLY DO? Well, I was class mom for five years. I volunteered for the book fair a few years in a row. I was snack mom many, many times. I’ve sold sportswear at Homecoming, chaperoned numerous field trips and was co-chair of the school’s annual fund raiser... twice. Oh, I was also in charge of the 120 gifts for the 6th grade Greek Festival.
WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU ARE IN PLANTATION? Shop! I’m obsessed with Sawgrass. I get there right at 8am when Target opens, continue on to Starbucks and wait for Off Fifth to open. It’s my happy place. I also like to spin at Cycle Bar and head to Dania Beach sometimes. We love Anthony’s Pizza and the BBQ place formerly known as Scruby’s.
| I s s u e 5 8 | August - Oct o be r 2 017
WHAT ARE YOUR PERSONAL HIGHLIGHTS? Hmm...easy...the birth of my girls, converting to Judaism, and taking a hard core, self defense class are the top three things I have ever done.
ANY ADVICE TO NEW MOM VOLUNTEERS? Take notes! It’s ripe with comedic possibilities. But seriously, definitely get involved, but have your boundaries in place. The PTA can smell new blood a mile away and they will suck you dry if you let them.
71
WHAT ABOUT PLANTATION MAKES YOU WANT TO KEEP A HOME HERE? Plantation is amazing. It’s such a great community, no matter how big it gets. It brings back wonderful memories of my younger years. If I’m driving down Peters Rd. with my radio tuned to 80’s on 8, I can almost pretend I’m still in high school...almost. DO YOU WANT TO GIVE ANY PROPS TO AMERICAN HERITAGE OR TEACHERS? I actually loved my time at American Heritage. The school was small so the teachers really got to know all the students. Shout out to Mrs. Nocerini, Mrs. Israel, Coach Holmquist, Coach Murtha, Mrs. Cole and Doc Hrinko, may he rest in peace. TO WHOM IS YOUR BOOK DEDICATED? The book is dedicated to Michael and the girls because, let’s face it, if it weren’t for them, I would never have been a class mom.

Dear Parents, Guardians and Community Members:
72
I am delighted to welcome you to the 2017/18 school year! Across our District, there are incredible learning opportunities for students of all ages. Whether a student is new to our schools or returning for another successful school year, we are excited about the many educational experiences that are ahead this year. As a countywide School Board member, I am honored to serve the diverse families of our District as we focus on educating all students to reach their highest potential. Our District’s strategic emphasis on early learning and literacy is paving the way for student achievement at all levels. With rigorous academic options, magnet and innovative programs, dual language programs, and career and technical education courses offering industry certifications – as well as nationally recognized performing and visual arts programs, outstanding athletics, and an array of enrichment activities – there is something for everyone. Ensuring we are meeting students’ individual needs is important for our District, and, as a former special education teacher, is a topic close to my heart. With our “Just Do It…I Did!” awards program, we celebrate the exemplary achievements of students with disabilities and through the District’s Autism in Flight program, students with Autism Spectrum Disorder receive unique opportunities to practice airport travel,
with the goal of reducing stress on actual flights. Social and emotional learning is also a priority in our schools. We understand that students need support in learning how to manage their emotions, achieve their goals, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. Through our social and emotional learning initiative, we are fostering positive learning environments and helping our students be successful in school and beyond as they develop into responsible citizens of our community. Social and emotional learning also has a major impact on our students’ mental and behavioral health by reducing risky behaviors and substance abuse issues, and increasing awareness about suicide prevention. This year, our District received tremendous support from state lawmakers across our area, led by State Senator Gary Farmer, for securing $200,000 in funding for our suicide prevention efforts. This funding will provide additional training, support and educational resources for our students and staff. The health, safety and welfare of our students are always our priorities – and this funding is an investment in creating brighter futures for our students. As a proud parent of two children, including a recent Broward County Public Schools graduate, it is wonderful to see the incredible educational opportunities in our schools and the excitement of our students as they prepare to head back to class! Together, let’s make it a great year!
INTERVIEW WITH A HUNTINGTON LEARNING CENTER STUDENT Milton R., 5th Grader at Sawgrass Elementary
H
ow long have you been coming to Huntington? How many days a week do you come and for how long? a- I have been coming to Huntington for about 3 months. During the summer, I have been coming for 4 days per week (3 hours per day). What do you do here at Huntington that is different than what you do in class or when you do homework? a- Huntington actually teaches me how to study in a way I can understand and use. When you first came to Huntington, what specifically did you want or need help with? a- I feel like the biggest thing I needed help with is study skills, writing, and comprehension. Was there any specific way Huntington made things easier to learn? Explain. a- How to pull out information properly, what to underline, skills to use to keep things in your brain, to be able to understand things more clearly. It is easier to remember things I need for tests. My grades are going up and I feel smarter. How do you like your instructor/tutor at Huntington? What is the best thing about him/her? a- I think my teachers are pretty good. They are nice, funny, and help me understand what I read better.
What do you think you want to be when you grow up? Is school important to do that? What subjects do you think you need to study to do that job? a- I want to be a scientist when I grow up. School is important for that because you need math, along with science. Based on how you have improved your learning at Huntington, do you think other kids should get the same kind of help? a- Yes, because it helped me get good grades and they should be able to, too. Do you think that being a better learner and student makes you happier? Why? a- Yes, because you can achieve more. Are you worried about harder classes in the next grade? a- Yes, but I can do it Thinking back to when you first started at Huntington, have you changed from then until now? How? a- Yes, because I’m getting better grades when I take tests. Mom, how have you seen the change in your son’s life? a- Mom’s answer: You can tell his comprehension is so much stronger now, even in just his daily conversations. Milton is also much more proactive than he used to be. He is scoring higher in everything he does. He got 5’s on his FSA (Florida Sunshine Assessment) and scored at the top of the entire school!
