The Shield staff proudly dedicates its 1961 edition to ELSIE PHILLPOTT. It gives us special pride to recognize the many previously unrecognized contribut i ons she has made to all phases of St. Martin's activities , The duties include everything from finding lost coats, to helping the Mothers' Club in its many functions. Willingness to help in all student activities has characterized her, and without her assistance many members of the administration, faculty, and student body would be in disorder. This is only a small token of great appreciation.

Filling Football Field - Dad' s Club Project

lThis year the Mom's Club has been very active, with many worthwhile endeavors. The style show, as usual, was a b i g success. The gala theme was "The Circus." All proceeds from the show go toward the St. Martin's Scholarship Fund. Also a tea wa s given, honoring new mothers.

The Dad's Club is undertaking a major improvement project. Under their supervision, the football field is being filled and leveled. This was a much-needed improvement since the existing football field was sadly in need of repair.

Both the Mom's and Dad's Clubs have offered St. Martin's tremendous services and have contributed many worthwhile additions to our school.

Often a yearbook has been described as a mirror; a reflection of the school and its students. It is hoped, however, that the '61 Shield reflects not only the physical and obvious characteristics of St. Martin's, but the spirit with which daily life is enacted. A valuable part of school living is the indiscernible part which will remain long after the recollection of faces and names has subsided. So the Shield Staff presents this book, with its pictures and descriptions, to recall in future times the spirit of St. Martin's.

HEADMASTER'S MESSAGE

The picture of the school Shield which appears on the cover of this annual, is symbolic of the school's activities during this school year . It is important that we are ever mindful of the great and timeless symbols which characterize the aims, ideals, and aspirations of our school. The American flag which each day proudly waves over our campus and stands beside the altar in chapel is one of these. It forever heralds the freedom and right of each student to develop his talents and intellect to the best of his ability It too is a reminder that each of us must do his best to develop those characteristics which typify the good American.

Another enduring symbol, representative of knowledge and scholarship, is the book. The printed page is symbolic of the opportunity, as well as the responsibility each student has to develop those skills which enable him to read and study effectively, in order that he may learn from those who have gone before; in order that he may share the wisdom of the great thinkers, philosophers, and statesmen, and come to appreciate the works of the great writers.

A third great symbol of particular significance to us at St. Martin's is the Church flag, a constant reminder that we are members of a Christian school community. The Church flag will be truly symbolic of our school community only if we as members of this community live our lives as true Christians.

Into chapel each morning we bring our distracted, sometimes joyful, often anxious selves. Here we may or may not do the simple, but profound act: we may open our minds and hearts to the love and guidance of God. To do this act is to be brought into the presence of God's spirit where the scattered forces of our lives are brought together in a meaningful unity. Then, with words of praise and thanksgiving on our lips, we return to the world of our play and our work.

The 1960 Football Team was moderately successful in games won and lost; however, the spirit was good. Losing three games by "tough breaks" the squad's record was 4 and 4. The most important phase of their attempt was the perseverance on the part of some of the personnel. Academic deficiencies and injuries hurt considerably and left the squad depleted for some games, and therefore a strong commendation should be forthcoming to those who STUCK.

MARTIN'S PROTESTANT EPISCOPAL SCHOOL,

FASHION FORMULA

With cold weather approaching, fashion conscious girls everywhere are asking themselve s, ''What to wear, where?"

For casual occasions, layer your look with a basic jumper. Add a blouse, plus a tunic top. Top it with a bulky cardigan-you have that Fabulous Look!

Make your accessories with a leather touched purse (lots of canvas s howing). Add a dab of gold. and you have The Purse That Was Meant To Be Noticed.

YOUR HALO HAS SLIPPED

As Jezebel was flying over, the following conversation was heard:

Hesse: ' 'I'll make the big decisions around here.''

P eggy: ·TH make the little ones. I'll decide where we go, and you can decide if Kruschchev is going to break up the U.N.''

Hesse: " Beans!"

Ly nn Lighter gets letters from Laine, according to latest reports.

There's a ma1·velous new look in the air for party time .... Th e snug bodice is always there, but the real news is in the skirt-it can be called T he Bell, The Fluid Look, The Non-Touchable, oi· The Shaped. Yes, culottes, knickers, an:I knee teasers are definitely in style. Worn with a skinny leathe,· string belt, all are fun for informal occaaj, ens. MOTHER MELVIN

Dear Mother Melvin, My nails are my problem. Most girls have trouble growing them. I can't keep them short enough. In fact, in a matter of five hours, they resemble tigers' claws. When I try filing them constantly, the teachers say that I distract the class. What can I do? -X

The theme of the 1960 Junior-Senior Prom was "Disneyland." The castle and saloon were thirty feet tall and the stage was e nhanced with a cascading waterfall. The favors for the seniors were sterling key chains and charms ordered from Walt Disney. The dance was the best ever! ! !

This year the faculty put on an impromptu skit with the aid of a few students. To say the least, the entertainment was unusual and excellent!

A choral program preceded the Christmas banquet. The music was superior. It consisted of sacred and secular songs which were sung by both the high and junior high school choruses. The banquet was a tremendous success. The "Boar's Head" procession was this year's latest addition to the festivities. Things were greatly enlivened by the presence of a well-stuffed, but realistic, boar's head from the local butcher.

The candlelight -service followed the banquet in a dimly-lit, beautifully decorated gym. The walls were enhanced by poinsettia, pine, and holly. Candles were the only source of light, lending an awesome touch to the service.

This year the elementary school presented the story of the coming of Christ as a separate program in the evening. The story was that of the coming of Christ, rather than primarily His birth, so that the true meaning of Advent preparation be emphasized.

Dedication of gifts

This year St . Martin's Day was of threefold importance. November 11 marked Honor Society Induction Ceremonies, dedication of gifts to the school, and Homecoming Day.

Many friends of the school had donated gifts , such as a cross, altar books, and a painting. These were formally dedicated. The chorus, decked in new robes, made their premiere performance.

The day's festivities were ended with the football game against Buras, which took place that night.

The new chorus makes its grand entrance. Induction ceremony

The year 1960-61 is now at a close - the end of the book, as well as the end of the year has now been reached. The "Shield" is its staff's contribution to Saint Martin's with the hope that in some way it will be an enjoyable part of school life: and then a volume of memories for the Seniors. It is sincerely hoped that this book is a pleasure for all who care about the Spirit of Saint Martin's.

Read it! Laugh at it!
