Football- '73 4-5

St. Martin's football team started the 1973 season with a group of boys that lacked experience and size. Because of these factors, the outlook for the coming year was not bright. Seven seniors led the Saints into their first game against highly rated Port Sulphur. The defeat showed the teams weakness clearly. In the foilowing game the Black Knights of Episcopal High in Baton Rouge took advantage of the Saints' errors and the prospects for a good year looked dim.

But the Saints found their offense against the Country Day Daisies and defeated them soundly 20-6. The team entered the tough 10-AA District schedule by defeating Buras 20-0 for their second win. Ben Franklin was the next opponent and the Saints kept their district record clean with another 20-0 victory. It was obvious that the team was making progress and the hard work in practice was paying off in victories.

The Saint John Chargers stopped the Saints the next week, and the highly rated Newman Greenies were ready to run the Saints off the field. Our arch rival found things a little tough; they barely squeezed out a slim 13-7 win. A rough road was still ahead because Big John Curtis was next and after leading at half time, the Saints fell to the Patriots. Homecoming was celebrated with a big victory over Belle Chasse, and the Saints finished the district with a 3-3 record, good enough for third place .

The team had a limited amount of success but the progress that was made from the beginning to the end was very obvious. The team should be congratulated on its spirit, determination and effon. Coach Rambis.

The 1973 football season was exciting but, in many ways, disappointing. In general the Saints played good ,otball to the clip of a 4-5 record, but mistakes cost the Saints several important games. Brian Ball, a junior, was a strong key to the Saints season on offense, he rushed for 689 yards and seven ,uchdowns. On defense he made 23 unassisted tackles and 17 assists while intercepting 2 passes for 37 yards and 1e touchdown. Other offensive standouts were Charlie Alfaro who completed 45 out of 117 passes for 739 yards 1d five touchdowns, but he was intercepted seven times. Robert Gonzales was the leading receiver with 14 ltches for 218 yards and one touchdown. Blair Johnson punted for an average of 33 yards per punt and an averre of 43. 6 yards and kick offs.

The Saints football season started against St. Charles in the Newman Jamboree. Both teams offensively had a ck of luster and the game turned out to be a defensive struggle that the Saints los~ 6-0.

175

The first game was played up the river in Baton Rouge against Episcopal High. The game was close but the Saints could not put any points on the board and were defeated 14-0. The bus trip home must have been a quiet one.

The Port Sulfur Broncos made a trip to the Crescent City and met the Saints on a neutral Sam Barthe field. The Broncos, it was clear, had brought their lunch and had meant for the game to be an all day affair. They wound up with a convincing 20-0 win over the Saints, who were still without a victory or a point.

The team was at a turning point ... they must win. The shon trip to Country Day is easily made by catching the towards town Airline bus and transferring to Metairie Road at a cost of under thiny cents. For the Saints the trip was worth making._They beat the Daisies, who were favored, by the convincing score of 20-6. A game that showed some unification in the offensive backfield.

In the first district outing, the Saints took on the "brains" of Ben Franklin's falcons. The Saints dominated the game and showed they were finally coming around to the tune of 20-0, and a district lead.

176
12 - KEN LARKIN QB 20 - BLAIR JOHNSON HB 21 - DOUGLAS HARRIS HB 22 - BRIAN BALL HB 24 - CLINT HARPER E

The road game out of town is a long one, and the road back is endless . . . if you lose. The Saints trip back, owever,: was quite joyous and triumphant. They beat the Buras Wildcats 20-0 and were now first place in the istrict with a 2-0 record. These two wins, however, came against lesser powers of the district; the Saints had a mg road to go.

Then, as if in a sad love story, disaster struck, the St. John Chargers decided it was time to break up a inning streak by crushing the Saints 29-6. The Saints were not up completely for the game and the Chargers .mply blew them off the field.

Arch rival and rated number two in the State, Newman, took the cross town bus over to what seemed an easy istrict game. The Saints however, knew they must win and set out to do so. The Newmanites looked as if they ould walk away with the game after scoring on their second· play from scrimmage.

25 - Tom Robbins HB 31 - Frank Clark HB 33 - Greg Dupuy HB 34 - Gill Pafford HB 41 - Jimmy Rusch HB
177

The Saints could have won the game easily by simply not making mistakes which gave Newman the ball ever~ time the Saints were in scoring position. The Newmanites kept their slate clean by beating the Saints 13-7.

In a game that could have gone either way, the John Cunis Patriots came out on the lucky end of the stick, 27-13. The Pats and the Saints have never really grown to love each other and it was evident in the hard-fough1 football game. The Saints were outweighed by the Pats on the average of 40 pounds but that didn't stop the Saints from trying. The Pats didn't hurt their chances of a state playoff berth on this particular day.

The Saints celebrated Homecoming and the end of a long disappointing season with a convincing 27-7 win over Belle Chasse Cardinals. The game as the score shows was dominated by the Saints offense.

The Saints didn't have a bad season, and they have a good nucleus for a fine team next year. The 1974 SHIELD wishes Coach Ram bis, his staff and his fine players the best of luck next year.
