On September 30, the Headmaster's House on Airline Highway was formally dedicated to Mr . Ellsworth 0. Van Slate, former Headmaster of St. Martin's, and his wife, Lilli, by the Rt. Rev James B. Brown, Bishop of Louisiana . Mr. Van, who was headmaster from 1951 to 1975, and Mrs. Van Slate were presented a resolution of the Board officially naming the house in their honor by Mr. John Graham, president of the Board of Trustees. Mr. Bailey DeBardeleben, former Board of Trustee chairman, addressed the entire school community gathered on the front lawn of the house.
Mr. Graham presents Mr. and Mrs. Van Slate with a dedication plaque .
An evening of celebration honoring the Van Slates and other long-time supporters of St. Martin ' s followed the daytime dedication . The couple was presented a Mike Berard watercolor painting of " their house " by Headmaster Don Schwartz and Mr. Jim Burlingame, member of the Board of Trustees . Mr. Burlingame addressed the gathering with a brief history of the school.

The 1986 Football Saines went 5-5 on the season, winning a trip to the state playoffs as the District 11-A A Wildcard team. Highlighting the year were great victories over Newman (19-17) for the second year in a row and the Homecoming game - Pon Sulphur Broncos (3-0).
Several team members were selected for the Coaches' AllDistrict Team. They were senior Kevin Roohi, who rushed for over 1,000 yards; and defensive stars senior Brett Phillips and seniors Brent Edwards and Freddie Devall.

The 1987 boys' varsity basketball team shattered several long standing school records on their way to an 18-15 overall record and their first state playoff appearance since 1973 Seniors John Moore and Fred Devall captained the team that earned a 7-3 district record in tough 11 AA.
The Saints placed three players on the All-District team selected by opposing coaches. Devall and juniors Chris Beckman and Louis Thompson earned spots on this prestigious roster while Beckman was also named to the Times Picayune All-East Bank Team.
"We took a giant step toward putting the program back on its feet," said first year coach Greg Domecq. "Our players earned respect for themselves that St. Martin's hasn't enjoyed for many years."
Though the Saints lose seniors Mark Charbonnet, Mark Contois, Fred Devall, Greg Hammerstrom, and John Moore, they will return a team that should challenge for state honors once again, a welcome relief to the long suffering Saints' faithful.

The 1987 baseball season was cur rather short due to the basketball ream's successes. However, under the guidance of Coach Sam Dozier, the ream had a seven and eight overall record and a three and seven district record Alfredo Mesa did a wonderful job and earned the ride of MVP. In addition, Chad Cooper was recognized as Most Improved Player. The young ream, which consisted of only three seniors, gained a great deal of experience which is sure to be displayed next season

The St. Martin's Wilderness Skills is geared toward teaching students how to travel gracefully through the outdoors as well as develop their camping, backpacking, and canoeing skills. Canoe designer Pat Moore visited the students to lecture on paddling and canoe design. Over the Christmas vacation, the class took a week long trip to the desert canyons of the Rio Grande. During Spring Break, the students maneuvered through some tough class III and IV rapids on their white water excursion to the Locust Fork and Chatooga River. This year was very produaive for the program and the students' skills improved immensely.
Louisiana Boys' and Girls' State is an extremely beneficial program. Juniors and Seniors from all over the state come rogether to compete for political offices Elections are on the city, parish," and state levels. Often the hours of the seven day program would run from 6am to 4am the following morning Cities competed for spirit awards with chants and yells while marching in formation - columns of 3 x 400 people. This year's representatives placed vety well:
Cameron was the Attorney General candidate for the Federalist party of Vermillion Parish and also served as the assistant to the mayor.
Elisia was the Lieutenant Governor candidate for the Nationalist party of Pearl Parish as well as the Mayor of New Orleans city . Kim served as the Federalist Publicity party chairperson and served in the House of Representatives.

The God Squad is headed by Fr. Bob Trent, the Dean of Christian Life. It is made of Upper School students who want to be involved in chapel service. Members plan several special services throughout the year and help with regular chapel services. The members not only help plan most chapel services, but they also participate by being acolytes.

This Fall was the beginning of the St. Martin's Angels - better known as the Dance Team. The concept was derived by Carol Lawrence, who is Head Advisor and Choreographer. Clad in red, white, and blue sailor uniforms, the angels made their debut in October for the Newman game.

The Quiz Bowl Club is a competitive, while still being fun, way to discover just how much trivia one knows The members make up questions which they will use in their practice tournaments Perhaps some future game show contestants will be molded from this club or team
The Halo is a newspaper publication put out by high school students. This year the Editors-in-chief are Jeremy Head and Don Chin, and the faculty advisor is Bill Tugwell. The Halo staff informs the student body about social events, sport events, and everything happening throughout the school. The most fun and famous of all the issues put out yearly is the Senior "Baby Picture" issue. Everyone looks forward to reading the Halo

Peer Support is a national organization formed to help young adolescents cope with their problems through the help of older adolescents. This year we have learned how to form a group and use these skills to become group leaders. We have had speakers on alcohol and drug abuse, suicide prevention, and many more topics. We have shared with and learned a lot about each other.
The Photography Club, organized by senior Donald Chin, is led by advisor Dr Cave. Composed of students who are dedicated to the fine art of photography, the club focuses around the basics of photography, such as camera parts, correct exposure, film speed, etc., as well as developing picture taking skills. The Chess Club, consisting of 16 members, played a round robin tournament. Best two out of three games determines the winner each week. Awards were presented at the end of the year to the first and second place winners. The yearly service project was once again, manning the dime slide booth at Heavenly Days. The members not only have a good time, but also help to make money for the school.
The Fashion Club has been very active during the 1986-87 school year. The first one was in the Fall for the Upper School and was sponsered by Lazy Bug. The major show was on March 29th in the Intercontinental Hotel. Our last show was in the late Spring for the Upper School. We attended the Ladies Leukemia League luncheon and fashion show benefit on December 3rd to observe the models in our own shows The Fashion Club has also had many speakers give talks to the club on various topics dealing with fashion, modeling, and how to present oneself. We have enjoyed learning more about the fashion world and had fun doing the shows, and we wish the best for the officers next year.

The Key Club has once again had a very successful year under the leadership of Kim Conway, President, along with a very active group of members and outstanding advisors. We worked at the Renaissance Festival, worked the concession stand at football games, raised over $150 for UNICEF, and blew up thousands of balloons for the Arthritis Foundation. We adopted a family and brought them food for Thanksgiving and gifts, food, and a tree for Christmas We also made frequent visits to the New Orleans Adolescent Home. The Key Club continues to be one of the largest and most active groups on campus.

The St Genesius Players have been very active in both school and community affairs this year . They have created new activities such as the Sadie Hawkin's Dance, as well as continued old activities such as bake sales and Vaientine's Day Balloons. At Easter, they delivered Easter baskets to Children ' s Hospital. The group was very active on and off campus all year!
The Middle School Show Group consisting of 32 sixth, seventh, and eighth graders was formed this year as an outlet for talented students who wished to perform. Under the direction of Mary McNeill, the group performed throughout the city of New Orleans and at various functions at St. Martin's . Their successful year culminated with a trip to Orlando where they performed at Epcot in Disneyworld and competed with other schools at the American Music Festival. BRAVO!

On December 18, the Lower School presented a morning filled with Christmas spirit. The Pre-K through first grades performed Once Upon a Manger. The second through fourth grades offered 365 Days of Christmas Each Year The fifth grade vocal students accompanied by the Upper school Jazz Combo entertained us with Christmas jazz. The fifth grade instrumental students played several Christmas selections.
On the evenings of November 20 and 21, Middle School students transformed the Chapel into a fantasy world of shouting pirates marching policemen, and beautiful young wards. The performances of Gilbert and Sullivan's musical "The Pirates of Penzance," were memorable evenings for all. The hard work and dedication of both faculty and students contributed greatly to the play' s success. The cast included such talents as Jimmy uonard, Cavan Bordelon, Roby Arensman, Devline Hartline, Max Berstine, Cate Graham, Christina Vial, Catherine Verlander, and Stephanie Rogers. There were many others who made the play memorable
"Runaway House" is a haven for young people in distress, and it is the setting for this play that deals dramatically and constructively with the growing problems of runaways . It also is the story of Bill and Linda, two young social workers, who work in the program For them, Runaway House provides a common purpose in life You were exposed to both worlds - the angu ish of the social workers trying to communicate with their young charges and the runaways, rejected, unable to go home but afraid to be alone
"Cats" - How can you describe the show? The production of the show began in August - in one wordthe show took dedication . The St. M Company consisted of 13 performers and the Combo. The musical was adapted for the student singers and the Combo by Ms . Mary McNeill , the director. Opening night was filled with excitement for all The response was great. The Company had 2 performances both Friday and Saturday night Then, they left for Chicago to compete in Musicfest, U.S .A. The Company included Sally Schuber, Dita Andersson, Owen St . Amant, David Elvin, Matt Gaumer, Leslie Fensin, Jones Dieth, Trey Hill, Tyra Robinson , Lutz Schreoder, and Kim Stiebing . This year's team was divided into two teams, the Reds and the Blues. In addition, there was a group called the Whites which played for both teams. The Red Team's record consisted of four wins, one loss, and one tie, and the Blue Team's record consisted of four wins, one loss, and two ties, for an overall record of eight wins, two losses, and three ties. Roby Arensman was an outstanding goalie. Robbie Rhoden and Marc Ripps were terrific at attack. The exceptionally strong Midfield and Defense were anchored by Paolo Messina, Jason Doss, and Carter Wood . Other leaders on the team were Todd Pittman, Hiro Mikami, Andrew Mclean, and Sean Higgins.

The 1987 St. Martin's Softball Team worked extremely hard this season, and, as a result, the girls came in third in district under the guidance of Coach Burgard. In addition, Becky Shaw and Monique Cerise's participation played a major part in the team's victories.
On May 2, the 8th grade class embarked on a five day tour through the nation's capitol. They visited the famous places such as Williamsburg, the Capitol Building, White House, Smithsonian Institutions, FBI Building, US Mint, Arlington Cemetery, and the Vietnam Memorial The class of 1991 was the first St Martin's class to present a wreath to the unknown soldier. At the museums, Williamsburg, and other sites, the students were given freedom to explore whichever areas that interested them most Some highlights included seeing Ronald Reagan's dog, seeing the bag lady freak out at Roy Rogers, and riding the subway, The Metro, for the first time, which was much cleaner than they had imagined. With a hint of sarcasm, one student noted that being woken up by Mr. Lind at 6:00 am was "just delightful " Even though the classmates became annoyed with each other at times, they learned how to get along with each other much easier. Before they knew it, they arrived at the New Orleans airpon where their parents were anxiously waiting for them.

The seventh graders went to the Piner's house across the river to celebrate Tom Sawyer Day . All of the students participated in several activities such as tug-of-war, a bubble blowing contest, swimming, a frog race, a sack race, and swinging in a tree. They also watched a play that the students performed. The seventh graders wished that school could be like this every day

The sixth graders had an outrageous time at the overnight . Mr. Breazeale drove them to the Holy Redeemer Conference Center where they swam, played football, and competed in obstacle courses . They played keep away - teachers against students Later that night, they watched "Outsiders . " Ryan Smith described the whole event as "cool." As the sixth graders loaded up the bus to go home, one student told her teacher that they were more like friends to them
