HEADMASTER'S ADDRESS

Dear Class of 1988

A school is only great if it is a caring, stable institution which is both supportive and responsive to the needs of its students and faculty For forty years, St. Martin ' s has adapted to change, risen to the academic challenges of four decades, and has maintained its charge to nurture in spiritual strengthening, intellectual achievement, and community service in all members of her family. Each of you has been a part of this growth, adaptation, and challenge The result is a class which shares many common strengths.

You are a diligent, caring, and stable class. You have taken your academic challenges seriously. Each o_f you understands the value of intellectual achievement and many of you have aggressively pushed your way through the curriculum rather than allowing yourselves to be passively led.

Whil e there is great diversity of personality in your class, you have chosen to appreciate the value of individuality with openness, acceptance, and a great sense of humor. You respond to each other and the school with laughter, togetherness, and spirit.

Each class experiences the unexpected in the form of a change or a deviation in routine, curriculum, or personnel. Your reaction has been to adapt, maintain direction, and to look for the positive.

The Class of 1988 is a strong class and it is a great class Like your school, you have been supportive, responsive, caring and stable. You are a class united. May you keep your perspective on individuality and may you remain close for years to come.

Sincerely,

Headmasters Address 7

Heavenly Days began with a threatening sky, but chat did not dampen the spirits of the Fun Run. The hundreds of runners, aged coddler co 70, competed in the quarter mile, half mile, one mile and three mile races They ran and ran and ran. Trophies were awarded to first and second place winners.

As the day progressed, the sun came out as did the crowd . Food, drink, games, prizes, confetti eggs and super sering became the order of the day. The game booths were manned by parents, faculty and students. Dunking the Headmaster was a student favorite! In the licde gym, there was gourmet food and beautiful planes for sale.

The Heavenly Revue, held in the chapel, showcased our StM talent The nation's #I Showgroup, "Hats Off," opened the vent with the three numbers that gained them their victory . Following that, students performed aces of magic, dances, and piano pieces.

A pat on the back and a big thank you ro the Mother ' s Club for a job well done.

The Dan and Francis White Chapel is the center of campus life. Located in the middle of the three schools, it is the unifying structure, and literally every student passes through its doors The chapel is a place of worship and of community. We share our sorrows as well as our joys in this building. The chapel facilitates meetings, rehearsals, classes, plays, and religious services The 1987-1988 school year symbolically began with the annual ceremony in the chapel, and the Class of 1988 closed their years at St. Martin's with their graduation.

In November the Fine Arts Department presented this year's all school musical, "The Sound of Music." Thanks to the fine directing of Mr. James Cox, we had the opportunity to be exposed to the exciting world of the Von Trapp family in pre-war Austria The cast and crew of this memorable production was comprised of a v;riety of members of the St. Martin's community including students from the Lower, Middle, and Upper School, faculty, and extended community. We even had a grandmother! BRA VO!

What I need to know about how to live and how to be, I learned in kindergarten. Play fair, don't hit people, clean up your mess, don't take things that aren't yours, say sorry when you hurt someone, draw and paint and sing and dance and work some, watch for traffic, hold hands and stick together - What a better world it would be if we all put things back where we found them and cleaned our messes, and when you go out into the world, it is best to hold hands and stick together.

n Friday, October 30, the Seniors added a very strange touch to the halls of St. Martin's. It was almost fun going to class because on the way you might have noticed two muscular males in tutus leaping by, or been greeted by Mr. Schwartz's clone. You also probably tried to avoid the Noi<ls or dodged the array of bikers ranging from Road Warriors to Mormons. Weird was definitely the word.

Senior Farewell Address

As we, the class of 1988, spend our last days at St . Martin ' s, we are full of many different emotions. Of course, we leave our school with excited anticipation for whatever new adventures lie ahead . However, I don't think any one of us truly understands how much he or she will miss this school. So many of our best times have been had here. We have gone through some tough times, too, but we were always there for each other, and we always came out okay So much of our learning has taken place here, in and out of the classroom . We have seen so many of our dearest friends depart, and have met just as many new ones. And now, it is our turn to depart Through the last four years, we

have greatly matured and changed a lot as a class, but we have always remained friends . Sometimes respected, sometimes misunderstood, we were always the best Senior class we could be It was not easy, but, as always, we have persevered with each other's help .

To the faculty and administration, there are no words to express how deeply in debt we are to you. The time you have spent working with us has helped so much, and we thank you for being just that - our friends. And to the Class of 1989, a little advice Give it your all, but always enjoy it it will be over before you know it

Senior Teacher Day ;~ i " ·

It ' s a scary thought ; Seniors in charge of an entire school! The faculty gets a little nervous on this day, but the Class of 1988 came through again. Everything ran smoothly, and the substitutes had a great time We ' ll never forget John Roger's classic chapel service or "Coach George" McGeehan on crutches Even the Time Picayune / States Item recognized this special day

18 days 9 Jays 5 days the days seem longer . 3 2 I. Finally! Friday 3:30 marks the official beginning of SPRING BREAK 1988 which has no parallel. Students pile into the cars which will take them to Destin, Florida where the condominiums and inns are overfilled with excited te enagers from all over the city. During the week they enjoy the break they have from routine. Students flock to the beach to work on their tans and to swim in the ocean. At night, they meet new faces at parties on the beach and in the rooms On the ride home, the rookies (freshmen) realize that what they experienced was a rite of passage, and seniors are sad because th ey will never return to Destin with their same friends again.

he Junior Senior Prom is one of the highlights that mark the closing of the school year. Everyone gets dressed in their finest, has a lovely dinner, climbs into a " bus" or limousine, and then comes to the dance This year the Prom was held at the beautiful Le Pavilion Hotel. The food was delicious and the chaperones numerous. Students and chaperones alike danced to the music of the Top Cats while in the lobby, students posed for their Party Pies - those "treasured moments in time.

Coach Rice cook his 30 second time allotment and extended it to 10 minutes. He had a lot of wonderful things to say about his team members. Later in the program, Coach Rice presented the Track Awards causing Al Trevino and Tom Bethune to settle in for the night. The evening was not without humor though, for Mr. Schwartz shared some very interesting Aggie jokes with the audience. An unscheduled award was a set of car keys given co Andy Wittich as he received his football award. This event was sponsored by the Dads' Club.

'' Art is a lie that enables us to realize the truth" - Picasso

E. B White described writing as an "act of faith, not a trick of grammar. " With a lot of faith in the power of words, Judy Thigpen, Dita Andersson, Helen Jahncke, Regan Kelley, Emma Tubb, and Cathy Thomason impressed the judges in the Louisiana State Poetry Contest, placing 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, and 11th. Then, demonstrating their faith in their fellowman, these talented students joined faculty members and other creative writers who dared to read their poems and short stories in the Lyre Chapel.

SPEECH CLUB

Senior Sleepover

The cops weren't called! The Class of 1988 managed to stage "sleepover" prank with grand finesse The next morning, after clean-up, underclassmen and faculty tiptoed across strewn, sleepy bodies on their way co class. Needless to say, Seaik>r classes were a bit slow and aromatic that Monday .

The week prior to the official "first day" of school, each upper school grade and their class sponsors go on an overnight retreat to different camping facilities across the lake. The purpose of these retreats is to renew old friendships, initiate new students, establish a class unity and make plans for the coming year. Special activities include shaving cream fights, marco polo, games of all varieties, video marathons, ping pong tournaments, cook-outs and special chapel services. le is a grand way co begin the year.

JUS.EPH ANU THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR

DREAMCOAT, by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd-Weber, was the US production this spring - with a crew of about 3 5, the multi-colored production played to SRO audiences all three nights It was upbeat, fun, and a little bizarre (who can ever forget those camels and the goat). The play, based on the biblical story of Joseph and his brothers, is presented in a mixed style of country, calypso, 50's rock and roll and vaudeville A rollicking evening was had by all!

One of the highlights of every junior's year is to receive their class ring It is a moment of realization ; of transition; a rite of passage from underclassmen to seniors.

The service was made special this year with an inspiring talk by Greg Domeque followed by Terry Fitzmorris' low-key humor as he called forth the juniors.

After the ceremony , a bus took the juniors and seniors to L' Enfant 's Restaurant for a sumptuous luncheon. Afterwards, there was time for conversation and dancing

Key Club is an international service organization sponsored by Kiwanis International. This past year, the Key Club participated in the International Theme, '' for friendship's sake." Members have enjoyed new friendships with the elderly residents of Metairie Healthcare and the teenage girls at St. John's Home This has brought St Martin's students a new perspective on life and showed them how to appreciate everything they have. Numerous fundraising activities provide funds for the many service projects. The Key Club members have enjoyed throwing a Christmas party, a year end banquet, and other social events to balance out all the hard, but fun, work. The Key Clubbers, who are proud o( their excellent service record, are known for having fun no matter what they're doing.

The Halo, St. Martin's student run newspaper, underwent several major changes this year. Editor Laura Hardine and faculty advisor Cailtin Epstein worked to lengthen the paper and to involve more students in the writing and production of the paper. The club has over twenty students on its staff, and they have successfully printed seven issuesincluding the popular Baby issue. Concentration was kept mainly on printing hard news and then on new features such as "Faculty Corner", "Top Ten . " , and "Center Stage." Even though the paper switched faces and ideas rather rapidly, it still belongs to Martin's .

The Lyre is an on-campus publication which prints creative writing and artwork submitted by students, alumni, and faculty Although the staff is made up of Upper School students, the Lower and Middle Schools also contribute their creativity Staff members give up free time to work as typists, proofreaders, editors, and graphic artists . Many staff members decide to pursue a career in publication. The art and literature that is published often wins awards, and for the past two years, the Lyre has earned superior ratings from the National Council of Teachers of English.

IIIIIIThe 1987- 1988 Fashion Club had an excellent year. Their advisors, Mrs. West and Mrs. Caserta lin ed up interesting guest speakers during the first semester. They learned about hair, make-up, clothes and modeling. After the Christmas holidays, the club members were very busy preparing for the main event, the fashion show which was held at the Hotel Intercontinental. The theme this year was "You Ought to be in Pictures." The Jazzercise girls opened the show with a dance to "We Connect," "Be There," and "Oh Yeah." Lower, Middle, and Upper School students followed wearing casual and formal clothes from Saks Fifth Avenue. The show ended with a grand finale.

1988 - the year of the NEW: new editor, new advisor, new staff, new club, new camera, new schedule, new format - all mingled with the ttaditional.

The year began with an editor, no advisor, no staffl Within 2 weeks, we had, along with the editor, an advisor and a 4 5 member inexperienced staff. Thirty members of the staff ventured to UNO for a yearbook workshop. We ptompcly lost 6 members due to terror!

Our first full staff meeting was held in the 9' x 12' Shield room. We oozed out into the physics lab and onro the sidewalk. Our most enthusiastic candid phorographer was Richard Huang who shot pictures 24 hours a day. No one could walk down the hall without having a flashbulb go off in his face.

We re-organized the staff into 5 divisions, each division having a coeditor. Pam Jenkins, LS; Nancy

Wulff, MS; Rayna! Ruch, Business; Michael Brunet, Misc.

and Lynne Churchill, US and Editor in Chief. Our first deadline was met on schedule. The next 2 - well , let 's just say we learned how ro work under pressure We decided to increase the size of the Shield which meant we had ro cover almost every event held by the 3 schools, grade levels and classrooms. And we did it 1

We would like co extend special thanks co all who contributed to the success of the 1988 Shield: classroom teachers and coaches for their patience, the administration for their support and cooperation, contributing photographers, contributing writers and our sales rep. from Taylor Publishing Company, Mark David. We hope the 1988 pictorial record is accurate, fun and memorable .

THE EGG

For the second year in a row, Warren Lind's eighth grade science classes participated in an egg drop experiment which tied together many of the scientific principals studied in their Physical Science Course

Students, in place of the traditional paper, were required to construct a device which would protect a raw egg from breaking when dropped from an approximate height of ten to twelve meters . Project designs ranged from the very simple but effective to the very elaborate . The student built devices were the result of many long hours of thought, discussion, design, and construction The success ratio was approximately eighty percent and students gained a great deal from the experience.

HERITAGE DAY

"Heritage Day" - The 6th grade answer to the World's Fair. The day was a walking tour into history with spinning wheels turning, Indians dancing, presidents speaking, and colonists cooking. They "gorged themselves with good," played original games, square danced and had a "fun, classy, high tech day."

7th GRADE OVERNIGHT

"The 7th Grade Overnight." When teachers hear ;hose words, a chill runs down their spines, but to the 7th grades, those words bring smiles to their faces It Nas an opportunity for the students to elect class >fficers and get to know one another. 7th Grade Halloween Party I

I I I ! I

On October 2 3, the cafeteria took on a different appearance. As the 7th grade arrived, observers could see that this was no ordinary party. From ghouls to babies to bums, the teachers and students alike changed their identities for the night. This is one party that will always haunt the students' memories.

On May 6, the 7th grade embarked on a journey through time - back to the 19th century and life on the Mississippi River. At the Piner Home the 7th graders, dressed in costumes from the day, participated in tug-of-wars and sack races. They also had a live frog jumping contest, a bubble gum blowing contest, and a costume contest. During the day, there was a surprise visit from " Mark Twain " (Paul Longstreth), who told them stories of his life on the Mississippi, and also a live performance by Huck Finn (Sean Grace) They ended the day by eating ice-cold wa termelons and relaxing in the shade of the beautiful oak trees

8th GRADE OVERNIGHT

According to many 8th graders, the overnight was extremely amusing! They spent what seemed like forever crying to find the camp site when it was finally discovered by Mrs. Herrington and Mrs Brady Once they had settled in,the class members split into groups and discussed leadership, then went swimming and played games. After a delicious meal of hot tamales, NO ONE SLEPT! le was an overnight they will not soon forget!

WASHINGTON

Wednesday morning, April 27, the eighth grade class was sitting in the airport waiting for their plane. By mid afternoon they were in Washington D.C., that magical place they had studied about all year. The rest of the week they would be walking or riding the metro through Washington. They met with Representative Bob Livingston, sat in on a session of the House of Representatives, and, for the second year in a row, they laid a wreath at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery. An added attraction this year was a visit to the Foldger-Shakespearean Library where they watched "Bill's Buddies" perform segments of such plays as Othello and Romeo and Juliet, They also learned about the history of the costumes during that era, and they had the pleasure of seeing two of their teachers and fellow students in those costumes. The trip was very enlightening and exciting, but exhausting!!!

FATHER/SON BASEBALL GAME

The fans.

A new tradition was begun for the middle school baseball teams this year which proved to be a huge success. Team members and their families gathered for a picnic followed by a Father Vs. Son softball doubleheader. The eighth grade fathers handed their sons that team's first loss all season while the seventh grade team squeaked by with a win over their dads

The day's success must be credited to Don Adair and Steven Griffith. Special thanks goes to Mickey Landry who took time away from his family to help the eighth grade fathers to victory. Congratulations middle school baseball players and thanks to the families of each player.

The Extended-Day Kindergarten began at noon with lunch, a rest, a snack, story time, activity time and then play time. For some of the more memorable activity periods, kindergarceners had airplane races, played with coys on Car and Truck Day, and brought scuffed bears for Bear Day. The children also had mini-tours, so a trip co the wrestling room was a definite favorite. Cooking is also a favorite pastime, and the food they concocted was appetizing along with a cake for Jesus' birthday and "garp" for a hiking snack. Our afternoons were busy!

The teachers' assistants of the kindergarten and pre-kindergarten levels support both the students and the teachers. At this age, the children still need a "little" help with things from shoe tying to story wrmng.

The assistants help the teachers design bulletin boards, read stories, take attendance, prepare art projects, centers, snacks, and with playground duty. You will often find the assistants escorting children co special classes (music, P.E., science, art, swimming, etc.), handling car pool and bus duty, and a multitude of miscellaneous tasks as the need arises. Each day brings new and unexpected challenges for the assistant.

The little gym became the Smithsonian Institute of St Martin's in March as the fifth graders became inventors and scientists. The Science Fair displayed creative genius, curiosiry and hours of work done by the students. Extensive studies on hearts, planes and outer space filled cable after cable, and awed the spectators. Perhaps we are nurturing another Thomas Edison or Alexander Graham Bell!!!

MAY - Indians - tents - feathersWorld Day - medals - cartoons - end of the year! Another active month was May. The 3rd grade celebrated Indian Day with their parents on the playground performing an Indian legend, songs and dances, a picnic and games.

Dinner is a cozy celebration of candlelight, whispers and wine and redf ish and crabs and shrimp and love.

In Memory Of Diane H. Mary

The greatest sadness our community experienced this year was the loss of Diane Mary. Her untimely death sent a shock wave that extended to alumni, former faculty and staff. This wonderful lady spread joy where ever she went. No matter what personal pain she suffered, her sense of humor carried her and those she touched through difficult times.

She was a friend. A friend in the true sense of the word . She listened, never judged, always had time, demanded nothing in return. She gave of herself.

Her love of this school was boundless. Having worked in offices all over campus, she knew everyone and everything about this school. She took care of her administrators and her faculry, always doing extra things to make their work easier.

The students were her favorites. To them she was mother, friend, confidant, supporter. She took them to her heart. We miss her. We feel blessed having known her.
