4 Dedication
Ms. Janet has been serving the Lower School community for several years. She can be seen in playing kickball with the little ones, coaching in the gym, or even collecting money at basketball games. Her enthusiasm and spirit for teaching is seen through her everyday smile and hugs. The Class of '96 would like to thank Ms. Janet for the many memories.
"Hell-o, hell-o, hell-0000, what a wonderful word is hello!" These words that are song throughout the halls every morning by someone who has inspired us all. Teaching students the fundamental aspects of athletics has been a major priority for Coach McGeehan during his tenure. He has coached everything from football to soccer to track. Through confidence and motivation he has helped build self-esteem in each one of us, on and off the field.
Dedication
To the Class of 1996:
I write this message to you only a few days after your Senior Chapel, one of the important events that marks your movement from St. Martin's to the next stage of your life and education. Still ringing happily in my head and heart are the lyrics of "One Moment in Time" and the words delivered on the class's behalf by Andrea Andersson
Your senior year has been one in which representatives of our school community have mapped out a path for our future in the document entitled "Excellence in the Balance." The title is not only an appropriate description of the contents of the planning document but also a wonderful capsule depiction of the character of St. Martin's Episcopal School. You have been provided extensive and varied opportunities for participation, learning and excellence here at St. Martin's. As a class you have taken advantage of the opportunities offered.
I was delighted to hear Andrea capture your experience here by mentioning individuals who have excelled in multiple ways: a class president who played football and won a state speech championship, a humorous commentator on school life who also excelled in cross country and track, a budding fashion designer who distinguished herself on the stage . This list is not exhaustive but rather a very small but illustrative sample of your diverse talents. Value that diversity of aptitude and interest in the days and years ahead, and in the language of "Excellence in the Balance" be happy to strive to distinguish yourselves "not in the one thing done best but in the many things done extremely well." Although you may specialize in your career some day, I urge you not to become too narrowly focused in your life's concerns.
One of my favorite "moments in time" of the entire school year took place at our all-school chapel service in early May. Near the end of our service Fr. Farrell asked you to stand so that the rest of the school community could pray for you . As I gazed out to see you rise a bit hesitantly but proudly at the back of the chapel, I was touched by the strenuous efforts of our very youngest students to see you from their vantage point at the front. Their faces were filled with awe and admiration for the "biggest kids" at their school. I hope the memory of that moment is as consoling for you as it has been for me. Please know that it is a clear demonstration that you carry with you the hopes and good wishes of those who have taught you and all those who will follow you into the ranks of the graduates of St. Martin's Episcopal School in future years.
Some of you have been with us a short time, some of you have spent most of your lives with us. No matter the length of your association, you have left your mark on our school. My fond wish is that your association with St. Martin's will continue happily for many years to come. Godspeed!
With esteem and affection,
Leo P. Dressel Head of School (i ,A.,ddress

This years Homecoming game was a lot of fun. With 20 Homecoming cheerleaders, cheering for the Saints, it was quite an exciting evening. The Homecoming Court looked great and at half-time there was a lovely presentation. Despite all the fun, excitement and hard work St. Martin's suffered a loss of 21-17 against Buras. The evening concluded with the singing of the Alma Mater led by our football team.
The Homecoming dance proved to be a great sucess. With a d j. playing the music, everyone danced until they couldn't anymore. The evening was filled with smiling faces and fun that
lasted the whole night. At approximately 10:30pm every one was anxiously waiting for the crowning of the queen Dressed in elegant white dresses, the Homecoming Court made their way out onto the floor. They certainly made an impression on the rooting crowd. As Shane Bohrer and Chip McGeehan moved their way across the court, they finally stopped at Wesley Rolston who was then crowned queen. Following the crowning, came the traditional first dance with Mr. Dressel. The evening ended on a good note, and everyone had a wonderful time.

s T M Day
This year, the theme for St. Martin's Day was "Hands Across St. Martin's. On Nov. 6, 1995, the Upper and Middle School students traveled down to the Lower School to meet up with their Lower School "buddies". In the Lower School classrooms, groups shared snacks, made name tags, and traced their hands for the all-school banner.
On the morning of Nov. 10, 1995, the whole school gathered in the big gym for a chapel service. Before the service began, Mr. Dressel began a tradition by presenting an annual St. Martin's Alumni Award.
When the presentation and chapel service, made more
entertaining with reenactment of the story of St. Martin, ended, the Upper, Middle, and Lower School students separated for the annual St. M Day Games. After the games, the traditional competition of answering questions about St. Martin's began. The day ended with the all-school cookout lunch and the viewing of the videotape of the day's activities, done by Wally Porter. Overall, this year's St. Martin's Day was enjoyable for just about everyone and brought the school together in a spirit of unity

Bye, Bye Birdie
On the weekend of November 18, the St. Martin's Upper School actors and actresses showed the school their talent as they performed in the Bye, Bye Birdie play. Mr. Cox, as the director, and Mrs. Coleman as the musical director, worked to organize the play, along with Michelle Pitre as choreographer and Leon Contavasprie as the stage manager.
The play , set in the 50's, portrayed a Rock ' n ' Roll idol, Conrad Birdie. Conrad was drafted into the army which caused great distress among many of America's teenage girls.
Bye, Bye Birdie was held in the St. Martin's chapel. This production was supported by the students, faculty, and parents. It was a great success and enjoyed by all.

ONE SPECIAL STAR
As the Christmas season rolled in , the Lower school performed their annual Christmas production. On December 19, 1995 the aisles of the Dan and Francis White Chapel were filled with little children filing into rows of risers. They ranged from the tiny tots of Pre- K, preforming One Special Star, to the "seniors of Lower School" the fifth grade, who performed Handle's Messiahs. The celebration and cheer was a wonderful way to wrap up school and set the scene for the Christmas Spirit.

The National Honor Society conists of those eleventh and twelfth grade students who have demonstrated excellence in scholarship, leadership, service, and character. All members have the privilege of helping the St. Martin's community through a tutoring program. This year 24 juniors and seniors were selected to join the distinguished group totaling 38. The organization's faculty sponsor is Ms. Beckman, and the officers this year were Tatum Truax, President; Taylor Wohleber, Vice-President ; and Muffin Labouisse as Secretary. Earning membership into the National Honor Society is, in Mrs. Beckman's words, "the highest honor bestowed upon St. Martin's students."

fl 50 New Beginning
To start off the school year, a new tradition was established by Mr. Barbee, the new Upper School Head. The class periods were shortened so that at the end of the day they would be free to do the scheduled activities. Everyone enjoyed that idea.
The first day, they had a motivational speaker. The second day they had a long assembly and discussed important matters about the upcoming school year. Finally, on the last day they had a barbeque. The whole upper school joined together for food, fun, and games.
Each class wore colorcoded t-shirts to distinguish between classes. All in all, everyone really enjoyed themselves. A great tradition was definitely started and hope- "' fully it will be kept for years to come.

Ringing in the Class of '97
On a bright sunny Thursday in March the St. Martin's Class of ' 97 gathered in The Dan & Frances White Chapel to receive their class rings. But before this event took place there were some anxious moments. The rings did not arrive until just before the ceremony.
Mrs. Alma Roohi , Class of '83 and a Pre-Kindergarten teacher, talked about what the ring symbolizes and how neither it nor a St. Martin's education sho uld be taken for granted.

After awhile you learn the s ubtl e difference betw ee n holding a hand and c ha ining a so ul. You learn lov e is n 't leaning , company isn ' t security , ki sses aren ' t co ntract s, and presents aren't promises. You begin to accept your defeats with a woman 's grace, not a c hild's grief, building your roads on today becau se tomorrow 's ground is too uncertain. So you plant your own garden and decorate yo ur own so ul in stead of waiting for so m eone to bring yo u flower s. You learn you can endure, you are stro ng , you do have worth. You learn and learn with every good by e you learn.

Life Skills Program
St. Martin's requires that the Juniors and Seniors take Life Skills as part of the curriculum. The course requires that fifty hours are spent doing community service, such as, visiting the elderly or spending time with underprivileged children.
The course , which only lasts one semester, is worth hat fa credit. Working with disadvantaged people makes the students realize how lucky they are. Life Skills also makes the students aware of things that could happen to them, such as suicide or rape. It teaches them stress management. It also teaches everyone about real life issues and respect for others.

Senior Internship
The Seniors are offered a once in a lifetime oppertunity before they graduate Each student does a two week internship in the field they hope to enter after they complete college.
This lets them see a little part of what the job entails. At St. Martin's this rounds out their education and gives them a head start on the vocation they think they would like .

SALUTATORIAN ADDRESS
Welcome and thank you for coming to share this evening with us. Tonight we, the class of 1996, with roses in our arms, sit up upon this stage, this pedestal of sorts. It is a rather self-congratulatory event, isn't it? "We have done it", we say. We sit with grins like the victors of the century, though I fear we may be forgetting exactly what it was that we did. You see, we were given a unique opportunity- the guidelines were set, of course. We were expected to study, to arrive each morning relatively near to 8 o'clock, and for all of this, they would grant us the gift of knowledge and a diploma in the year 1996, a sheet of paper from which yet more opportunities would arise. Like a row of dominoes, we stood, while someone else knocked over the first piece, and as long as we stood in line, pieces upon pieces would fall neatly, knocking more over on their way. Of course, it wasn't really all that simple. Most did far more than the minimum requirement. But, honestly, we were given room to succeed. Since pre-kindergarten, they entitled us the class of 1996, insinuating that, chances are, we would be up here tonight - if we stuck with the deal.
St. Martin's, packed nicely into its 14 acres slot on Haring and Green Acres Rds., offered a promise of success. If you are an artist, we will admire your work. If you can act, you will be on our stage. If you can do your homework, we will average a 100% into your quarter grade. Everyone knows everyone and, while at times it has caused some trouble, for the most part, it simply offered room to be noticed, appreciated, and celebrated.
However, the warm world of St. Martin's, with all of its nurturing, possibly hasn't given us enough practice at failure. Doctor Seuss, in his book, "Oh the Places You' 11 Go" speaks with St. Martin's reassurance, promising "wherever you fly, you'll be the best of the best; wherever you go, you will top all the rest." Yet Dr. Seuss goes on to mention, "except when you don't Because sometimes you won't. I'm sorry to say so, but sadly, it's true, that bang-ups can happen to you." These times of Seuss's so called "unmarked streets and unlit windows" ask a little more of us. They ask us, and yet, they are just for us. Being part of the St. Martin's community so completely, we forget that we are separate entities, individuals who will leave these doors and experience something unfamiliar, being alone. Seuss reminds us oflonely time, "games you can't win, 'cause you'll play against you." He continues, "when you're alone, there's a very good chance - you'll meet things that scare you right out of your pants". I comically remind us of these things not to terrify us, but to prepare us. St. Martin's has escorted us to this stage with all of Ms. Brady's "warm fuzzies", but the even greater challenge is not just succeeding when all the odds are with you, but rather moving on after skinning your knee. I am forever thankful for the support structure St. Martin's has provided me, in the basic principles of the institution and the companionship from i ts community - hoping that outside of St. Martin's outstretched arms, we are strong enough to face defeat and keep on walking. I believe we are.

VALEDICTORIAN ADDRESS
Good evening, distinguished guests, faculty members, friends and family. On behalf of the 1996 graduating class of St. Martin's Episcopal High School, I welcome you to the night's ceremony. We stand before you this evening eternally thankful for your years of support, encouragement and love, but humbled by the task that lies before us.
My first thoughts for this address were to encourage my fellow graduates to follow their dreams and accept any challenges they may face in the future. I imagine that these same topics have been used in many past commencement ceremonies with good effect. It is well that we dream, for without dreams life might not be worth the effort. It is equally important that we accept challenges, for without the courage and determination required to face challenges, our successes would be random at best. But we must all understand that simply dreaming and accepting challenges is not enough.
While commenting on the living conditions in New York City, Moss Hart once said, "the only credential the city asked was the boldness to dream. For those who did, it unlocked its gates and its treasures, not caring who they were or where they came from". This statement, taken at face value, would indicate that success in New York City is the result of dreams of a better world, a more successful life or more opportunities. Imagine how successful we all would be if this were the case, you would be looking at a stage filled with Pulitzer and Nobel Prize winners, instead of High school Graduates.
The pathway to a successful and fulfilling future lies not in our ability to dream, of in the scope of our dreams, but in the plans we develop and implement in order to achieve these dreams.
At St. Martin's, this concept was understood and practiced because we now stand before you having successfully completed our tenure. Yet, this accomplishment cannot be credited to the efforts of the individual. With the guidance and assistance of our parents and teachers, we achieved our goal, graduation. We completed the dreaded term papers, excelled in our athletic endeavors, displayed our talents in the fine arts, and pulled through the seemingly everlasting case of senioritis. Having met these challenges and fulfilled our dream, we eagerly await new opportunities and successes.
However, with the independence that graduation provides, we can no longer count on others to insure our success. We must rely on ourselves and the foundation we received here and at home to create a plan in order to reach our goals. For, if we do not, then our dream will never be our reality. And, as the poet Langston Hughes once said, a dream deferred will "dry up like a raisin in the sun, ... fester like a sore," or "just [sag] like a heavy load." We will wonder what could have been had we prepared ourselves for the future and had we conquered the obstacles that caused us to stumble along the way.
Emily Dickinson addressed the importance of dreaming and following plans in her poem number 1176 by saying, "We never know how high we are/ till we are called to rise/ and then, if we are true to plan/ our statures touch the skies." We, the Class of 1996, have been summoned by the promised and the dreams of the future. And, the plans that we establish for ourselves will allow us to "touch the skies."

Tom Sawyer Day
Each year the 7th grade studies the writer Mark Twain and his famous story about Tom Sawyer. It was no different for this year's class.
To culminate this year's studies, the class again went on their one day outing across the river to relive Tom's story.

Something to Prove
Despite a 4 and 6 record this year , the St. Martin ' s Saints have kept a great attitude and have shown us a fantastic performance, with great consistancy. The loss to Buras at Homecoming was the pivitol game in which they could have bounced back from a losing streak . When Chip McGeehan , senior co- captain and leader in touchdowns for the team was injured at the half, it proved to be a costly loss for the team
Coach Dozier is hoping that his level of athletes coming out on the field continues to improve He has high expectations for the team in '96 He needs to find a new quarterback to replace Shane Bohrer, and a new safety to fill Chip McGeehan ' s shoes . He anticipates a lot of kids coming out next year including his star players: Christian Chauvin , Brett Sutton , Mike Truax, Jason Clotworthy , and Steven Sherman. The football team had a season full of great memories.

Serve, Set, and Win
The St. Martin's Volleyball Team was inspired by their motto: "No Fear - No Excuses - No regrets". Coached by Mrs. Trevino, Varsity ended with a 1418 total record and 4-4 district record. Though led by multiple seniors, the captains were Elizabeth McManus, Stephanie Murray, and Stacy Weber.. All three additionally made All-District. Stephanie Langlois and Coleen Kenny were announced as Honorable Mention in District. Elizabeth McManus, Stephanie Murray, Stacy Weber, Stephanie Langlois, Ryan Ann Murphy, and Keri Solis were nominated for the Academic All State Volleyball Team. The '95 team was the first at STM to travel out of state to the McGill Tournament in Mobile, Alabama. They placed 4th in the Episcopal Tournament. The Junior-Varsity, coached by Mrs. Edwards, remained competitive all season as the Varsity fulfilled their goal of improvement. Mrs. Trevino feels that "this team grew as a unit from August through November." The many seniors will be missed and leave a tough legacy and fond memories.

During the dual meet season, the swim team practiced every Thursday in order to discern which event best suits each swimmer for the state event. According to Coach Smith , "We don't slow down our efforts in training during the season due to the state championship being our goal!"
The boys' were led by High School All-American Billy Coleman, Senior Ian McAllister, and Richard Lo. Andrea Roohi and Alison Rodriguez were dominate for the girls. The boys were state champions, for the third year in a row, while the girls came in third. All in all it was a great year.

They finished second in district competition, with Chris Tusa in the top three. The girls team was a strong, young team. Freshman , Caroline Williams, and eighth grader, Dana Burshell, led the girls team. The girls were also second in district. Both the girls ' and boys ' teams finished in eighth place in the state meet. The team had the best results in the Baton Rouge Invitational.

Hoopin it Up
Thisyear the Girls' Team had a new leader in Coach Robin Martin. Coming from UNO, where she was a Graduate Assistant, Coach Martin brought a new look to the STM Girls' Basketball.
Senior captains Elizabeth McManus, Tatum Truax and Stacy Weber lead the team to the playoffs. During the season the girls had some impressive wins over some very formidable opponents.
With Juniors Candis Carbo and Ja Juan Gair, and Sophomores Catherine Betz, Michelle Delainey and Jennifer Dinsdale Coach Martin has the nucleus for another very good team. Add to that returning Freshman Aimee Folse and Amy Scalia St. Martin's should be in for another good year.

Boys Varsity Soccer
Soc' it to 'E01!
This year's accomplishments throughout the season were not measured by the records that are written on paper, but by what the team has shown through their skill and efforts on the field. The boys' soccer team worked hard the entire season , but fell short of making the playoffs in a losing stuggle to St. Charles, the final game of the season.
What the team has learned, is not shown through gaining titles, but it is rather in their display of positive attitudes on the field and their cooperation with each other. The soccer team had a fun and successful season this year, and they wish to come back next year with more vigor and power to sweep the district.

Varsity Wrestling
Take it to the Mats
Coach Brian Berke had high hopes for his 1995-1996 Wrestling Team. While they did not win the state wrestling title they did not let him down. Led by Juniors Andrew Gouch, Lea Perez, Deane Smith and Mike Truax the team made a very commendable showing, and with any luck all will be back next year.
What the team lacked in size it made up with intensity. This allowed the team to finish among the top teams in most of the tournaments they participated in. Because this years team was made up of all underclassmen, St. Martin's Wrestling Team should be one of the top teams in the state next year.

Touching all the Bases!
This years' STM Baseball Team while small was very evenly distributed throughout the Upper School Grades. This allowed the older boys to work with the underclassmen and help them with their fundamentals and learn Coach Dozier's style of play.
Because of this experience the team was in almost every game even though they were often cast as the underdog. With fourteen players retuning, many of them starters, Coach Dozier is looking forward to a winning season.

With three seniors starting, the softball team faced a group of tough teams in their district. The team was filled with a group of talented people including our catcher, Stephanie Sharpie, the second baseman Jennifer Dennuna, and the left fielder Taylor Woleber. With Charles Maumus and Sue Edwards leading the team and our faithful managers Sharmel and Nisha assisting , the team spent hours preparing for each game. Although the team did not succeed in all their games , they did have a great season overall including an exciting comeback win against Fisher.
