1997 - 1998 YEAR IN REVIEW

e 1998 Shield commemorates St. Martin ' s 50th Anniversary. In April of 1997, St. Martin'sturned50. Tocommemorate this event the school had several celebrations. A birthday party was held for the entire campus.

Bishop Brown visited and talked about the history of the school. In the Fall, there was a birthday party held at City Park. At this party, sponsored by the Dads' club, we had games, music, food, and a birthday cake.

The 1997-'98 school year marked significant advancement in technology at St. Martin' s. Through grants

and the generous donations from St. Martin's families, the three of the computer labs were modernized.

Computers were placed in many of the classrooms and libraries. Now students have more opportunities to use the computers in and out of the classroom.

The following pages try to capture different moments throughout the year.

The last few pages contains several birthday party pictures. The students have put a lot of effort into this year's Shield, and we hope you will enjoy it.

THE CLASS OF 1998 DEDICATES THIS YEAR'S SHIELD TO JAMES R. MARSALIS, JR. Mr. Marsalis came to St. Martin's in 1958. Heisamember of the Class of 1962. After attending Tulane University, he came back to St. Martin ' s and taught Algebra II and then Physics. Later on he started teach ing Advance Math and Calculus . He has been the Cross Country coach for many years . He is also one of the Track and Field coaches.

Every morning, he comes to school early and writes the morning announcements. He

is a faculty advisor for the Student Council.

Even though most of his extracurricular activities have to do with Cross Country and Track, you can usually find him at many St. Martin ' s events. He always shows his school spirit at sporting events.

He paints up and cheers the students on.

Mr. Marsalis is a man with a great personality and sense of humor. He is very dedicated to the St. Martin's community and he enjoys being part of it.

Homecoming

Activities The usual Homecoming competition began on Sunday this year with all the classes decorating their designated sections of the upper school hall in their themes. The freshmen had the 1950' s, while the sophomores had the 70' sand the juniors had Ancient Greece. The seniors had the 80' s. On Wednesday, the whole upper school dressed in clothes appropriate to their era which they had chosen. Also included in the activities were "spirit nights" in which the classes had to sign in at various high school sporting events in order to calculate which class had the most spirit. Of course, the seniors won.

HOMECOMING GAME

This year's homecommg game came down to a battle between our St. Martin's Saints and the Falcons of Ben Franklin. The Saints started off well with a field goal, but the Falcons answered with a touchdown before the end of the half.

Despite a well fought second half, the Falcons prevailed 22-11, which is a rough estimation since the scoreboard wasn't workmg.

Many alumni were present for the game, and the homecoming court made its regular appearence.

The student body showed its support by painting up and cheering the team on. The devils and angels were there to help the cheerleaders cheer on the team.

Even though it was not a victory, there was no lack of school spirit.

HOMECOMING DANCE 1997 This year's Homecoming took place October 25, 1997. It was a big success due to student participation and preparation for the dance. The lighting and the music by the D.J created a fun atmosphere.

Everyone crowded around and cheered for the homecoming court as they were led by the senior football

team members. The night went smoothly and climaxed when captains Matt Rigdon and Geoff Artigues crowned Kelly Hall, the new queen. The cool weather was great for relaxing in the Pine Grove after breaking a sweat on the dance floor. Everyone seemed to have a great time.

ST. MARTIN'S DAY Throughout time St. Martin ' s Day has come to exemplify what we, as a school, are all about: faith, scholarship, service, and of course family.

The day begins with an all school chapel and eucharist which precedes the annual games. The games give students time to bond as well as an oportunity to creat memorable moments.

- Kurt Vonnegut, 1998 college commencement address Dr. Harriet Aguiar-Netto quoted the above remarks by noted author Kurt Vonnegut during her opening sentences at your commencement exercises. As usual, Vonnegut has embedded his wisdom in sardonic wit.

I would suggest that you were not kicked out of Eden, but rather sent out with hugs and smiles. You may also wish to debate whether Eden is the proper metaphor for St. Martin's School. One must admit that some of you moved through our halls with comfort while others struggled with some anxiety. Nonetheless you have emerged from a school environment that has been safe, protective, and blessed with good fortune and significant resources. You have been known by name here.

While I hope you never lose your connection to St. Martin's, Vonnegut is correct in saying that there comes a time to go. The reason has to do with the school and with you. You have sampled the delights and challenges we have had available to you as students, and now you are ready for new and different opportunities.

I do hope you leave St. Martin's feeling full : Of memories of events and moments of lasting significance; Of connections to many people, peers and adults alike; Of skills that will sustain you as you continue your education and your life; Of knowledge and values that will shape the personal choices that still await you and that will in the end make the difference in your lives.

You will and must get hungry again. There are more memories to create, more people to meet, more skills to hone, more knowledge to learn, more values to deepen. May you always satisfy your hungers in ways that are healthy, holy and happy.

The world awaits and needs you, friends. We are pleased that you are ready to go, but we shall certainly miss you when you are gone. God bless you now and always.

The results of this year' s pre-season showed the Saints ' courage heading into the new district lineup. The regular season began with a disappointing loss to the Newman Greenies, but the Saints went on to defeat both Ecole and St. Bernard in convincing style. In di strict, the Saints scored 29 points against defending state champion, West St. John. Playing in the toughest district in the state, the Saints showed a lot of character.

This year in volleyball , St. Martin' s went furth er than it has gone in many years. The undefeated di strict champi ons fini shed the season 24-7, whi ch included many exciting games.

The team , known fo r its comebacks, did an excellent j ob in taking on many tough opponents, including 5A leaders Mount Carmel and Bonnabel.

The girl s headed to the State Tournament with high hopes.

Ho wever, becau se of the ir placement in a tough bracket,

they met returning state champion Newman in the second round.

The Sai nts beat DeQuincy in their first game then continued to the qu arter fi nals to take on the Greenies. Thanks to great support the girl s were the onl y 2A team to take the champ's to three games. Al though the Saints didn ' t go quite as fa r as they had hoped their hard work and enthusiasm brought them success and many honors including Catherine Betz being named MVP of the Di strict and the All Tournament Team .

This year's Cross Country season finished very well for the team. On Nov . 15 they ran district and both the boys' and girls' teams finished in a somewhat disappointing second to St. Charles, despite the fact that the boys ' team had four runner's under 18:30, who also made the all-district team.

They were Mark Ashcombe, Brett Vogt, Peter Adair, and Brent Smith. For the girls , Caroline Williams finished second, while Rebecca Turri also made the all-district team .

At the state meet, run on Nov. 20, the team was faced with a slow, muddy course and times were about 45 seconds slower . The girls finished 13th out of 26 teams, despite the loss of Dana Burshell to injury. The boys finished 8th out of 29 teams , as they have for the last three years . Overall, it was a very successful season and they are looking forward to next year.

e swim team this ear, as in past years, had a stable base. Even though the loss of key members disrupted the boys nucleus, there was a host of new talent to pick up where the old left off. Senior Richard Lo carried most of the load, providing leadership while scoring the bulk of the teams points. "We didn't blow any teams out like last year," said head coach and All-American Alan Smith, "but we still managed to pick up a state championship."

The girl's, on the other hand, returned almost the entire team from last year.

As expected they broke records left and right, annihilating opposing teams on their way to a state championship.

e girl's ended the eason in second place in a very competitive district. Their win loss record was 5 and 5 with one tie. In a district made up of cross-town rivals Newman, Secred Heart and McGees, all of which provided the people in the stands with exciting games.

The team will be losing some key players when the class of '98 graduates. But with all-district player, Julie Fiorenza, and all-district second team members, Emery Ordermann, Michelle Chang and Megan Peck and the rest or the underclassmen the girl's team will be heard from again next year.

is year' s Boys' Soccer team had a eal load on their shoulders after the record season by last years team.

Under the leadership of 1997 Coach of the Year, Julio Paiz, and seniors Patrick O' Brien, Robert Stone and Brian Werth the team answered the call.

With some impressive wins over a number of local power houses, the team finished second in the district and went on to the state playoffs. Here there were high hopes of a finish like last years runner up.

This was not to be. After an impressive victory over Lavonia at home, the team traveled to E. D. White. The team played a great game and fought hard, but when the final score was put on the board St. Martin's had lost 1 to 0.

Our boys should not be disappointed, they had a good season and made the playoffs. Four of them made the alldistrict team and two, Jonathan Campo and David Sharple, will be returning.

Jonathan and David, along with a number of other underclassmen can look forward to another rewarding season next year.

fter one of the toughest pre-dis trict schedule, where the Saints were very competitive, the saints faced Riverside, St. Charles and state champion Ridgewood.

All three were early district losses and made the rest of the season an uphill climb.

Despite the early losses the Saints did not give up.

In the second half of the

season the came back to defeat both Riverside and St. Charles. The girls lost a narrow decision to The Eagles, they finished the district in third place.

Despite the loss of senior starters Catherine Betz, Micki Deleany and Jennifer Dinsdale, the Lady Saints are looking forward to a good season next year. With juniors Madeline Chimento, Lovie Doucette, Amy Scalia and Freshman, Latrice Wade returning, all who lettered, they will be competitive.

th an all new starting lineup, this year's Saints team was not expected to have an easy time. With the senior leadership of Drew Wilkie, averaging 15.8 points per game, and Mark Angehr providing outside shooting and leadership, the team finished just under 500. With a record of 12 and 14 the team barely missed going to the state playoffs as a wild card along with district foes Riverside and St. Charles.

There were many memorable moments such as Drew Wilkie's basket with eight seconds remaining, to put the Saints up by one over St. Charles. The twelve point comeback over top-rated Lutcher, in the last two minutes.

Even with the loss of for senior starters, next years team will be one to be counted.

is year, the St. Martin ' s wrestling team faced many obstacles such as injury, illness and small turnouts , but the team did quite well in the state tournament.

Seven out of the ten wrestlers that were brought to stateplaced in the top three .

The Saints managed to get four wrestlers in the finals: Danny Navar(l 30), Andy Chrestman (135), Peyton Cavaroc (140), and Marty black (152). Danny Navar and Andy Chrestman got victories in the finals. This was Danny's second state title and Andy Chrestman's first.

Danny finished the year with a record of 38-5 and Andy with a record of 31-7. Marty Black and Peyton Cavaroc were both runner-ups , but they only lost by very close margins . Three freshman , Jonathan Coleman (103), Scott Robinson (145) , and Dennis Stewart (160), and won third place in very solid performances. The Saints overall 192

Thi s was the last season for head coach M ike Snyder who is bei ng tran sferred out of Loui siana. The team had a good season, finis hing the year wi th a 6-4 du el meet record. Among the tea ms that the Sai nts beat were Fountainbleau, Belle Chase, and East St. Joh n, John Curti s, Port Sulphur, and Pearl Ri ver. The losses cam e from such tough teams as Jes uit, Brother Martin , Northshore, and Rummel who were among th e best in Divi sion l. The strategy thi s year was to wrestle such good teams as Jesuit and Brother Martin to gain ex perience and overall better the team . Thi s strategy seemed to work we ll ; the res ults show th at the team did very well fo r onl y hav ing ten out of fo urteen possible weight classes .

The indi viduals acco mplished great feats this season, too. Andy Chrestman made it to the fin als o f Lafayette, whi ch is a very d ifficu lt tourn ament and pl aced seco nd. Dann y Navar pl aced fo urth at In vitation al Tournament, Marty, D ann y, and And y pl aced first. Marty rece ived the outstandin g wrestl er award. Peyton received second place, and Jonath an recei ved third. The team had many pl acers in almost all of the tournaments the team co mpeted in . Overall the tea m and the indi vidua ls did very we ll thi s season and hope to continu e doing well in the future.

The boys and girls were winners in both field and track.

While the graduating seniors contributed significantly to thi s strong showing, the underclassmen responded well when called upon .

The girls' team fininshed second in the district with several top three fini shes. While the boys' fini shed fifth , several undercl ass men fini shed strong and will be even better nex t year.

Of special note was the first place finish by Catherine Betz, throwin g the javelin, in the State Meet. Catherine also set several personal best and set a regional record this year.

On the boys' side sophomore, Ryan Rossner, fini shed second in both the district and reginal meets. He then went on to fini sh 4th in the State meet.

Everyone is looking forward to next year with great anticipation .

aying in one of the tough est districts in the state, no one in considered the Saints a threat. When the dust had cleared and the season over, everyone had a different prospective.

The St. Martin's team had reached the quarter finals in the State Tournament after securing a wild card slot. They had finished behind power houses Riverside and St. Charles, both considered contenders for the state championship.

Facing undefeated and top rated Buras in the first round, the Saints won 6 - 1. They next beat Iota 5 - 1 before being beaten in a close game by the defending State Champions, Pope John Pall IT. The team loses only three seniors, and with only one junior, the Saints will have a lot to look forward to in the coming years.

was another good year for the varsity softball earn. Even though they ended the season with losing record, the team fought hard all year.

Under the senior leadership of captain Marcie Juneau, the softball team was competitive in all their games. The team was also led by seniors Emily Bordelon, Stephanie Caine, Meghan Becnel, Emily Hymowitz, and Micki Delaney.

Another high point was the strong pitching of sophomore Ashley Peterson. The team will return many starters next season and look forward to an outstanding year.

ed by senior cap ain Matt Rigdon his years' gold team set and reached some lofty goals. Coming back after a disastrous first round, Jonathan Martinez finished seventh in the State Tournament. Jonathan Levenson put two consistent rounds together and finished in the top twenty. Both of these young men are sophomores.

The team is primarily made up of freshman and sophomores. This means that the best is yet to come.

The term wait till next year applies in this case.

ach Danny Echt eturned from alifornia to coach this years boy's and girl's tennis team. He found a wealth of talent in the under classes and leadership from the seniors.

A team made up primarily of freshmen and sophomores, saw a number of individuals and teams reach the state tournament. Senior Tori Seixas reached the second round of the event.

Doubles partners K. K. Marteinez and Florie Claire Webb reached the quarter finals, and senior Nihal Godiwala and eighth grader Eric DeRoche were defeated in a hard fought finals match.
