MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
It’s not the will to win that matters— everyone has that. It’s the will to prepare to win that matters. – PAUL “BEAR” BRYANT
At St. Martin’s, not only do we have the will to win, and the experience of winning, but we have been preparing to win throughout the six years that I’ve been Head of School. The winning revolution has been a quiet one, full of hard work, dedication, and determination. Our goal is simple: to excel in athletics at every level. Here we are in the Fall of 2017 with all four fall sports teams competing at the playoff level. Our football team finished the season with pride, having endured some significant injuries. We made the playoffs, so two buses full of excited players and fans headed to Abbeyville to meet the Vermilion Catholic Eagles on their field for the first round of playoffs. Though the Eagles prevailed, our boys gave it their all and walked away with a sense of pride and accomplishment. Our volleyball team gave us an exciting winning season, treating the fans to a new levels of excellence in their games. They made it to the Pontchartrain Center this year to play in the Quarterfinals. It was the first time in my six years at St. Martin’s that we played in the Pontchartrain Center. Our girls left everything on the court. Next year’s team is a young one, full of hope and promise. Watching our cross country athletes complete a mile-long loop around the campus multiple times each afternoon is nothing short of inspiring. Their training is disciplined, and their goals are what drive them. It comes as no surprise to me that our boys’ team earned its third consecutive state title and our girls’ team won its first state championship in school history. This year I attended the swimming state meet for the first time, and was so happy for the girls’ team, who took home a third place state finish in Sulphur. The boys’ team also fared well, placing fifth. Our swimmers are an impressive group of quiet, determined athletes. Our winter and spring athletic teams offer great promise as well. The future of St. Martin’s athletics is very bright. We are growing past some lean years, as numbers go, and moving into a robust future full of larger classes, fuller teams, and stronger coaching. We have made a concerted effort to bring St. Martin’s standard of excellence to our athletic program, and with Sue Bower at the helm as Athletic Director we are doing just that. As Paul “Bear” Bryant advises, it is the will to prepare to win that takes the day. And we are fully prepared to win!

S LAR Eclipse Provides Teachable Moments for StM Educators
With their NASA-approved solar eclipse glasses on and handmade pinhole viewers ready, St. Martin’s students had front-row seats for one of nature’s greatest shows, the Great American Solar Eclipse on August 21, 2017. Students in all divisions participated in discussions, lessons, and hands-on projects aimed at ensuring this real-life experience had meaning for students beyond the novelty of staring into the sky. While not all students viewed the eclipse directly, all were able to participate in some way. In each division, faculty members used a variety of methods to explain the complex astronomical event in subject- and developmentally-appropriate ways. Three-year-olds in George Cottage talked about spatial relationships and shadows as they explored interactions of light. Teachers read books about shadows, the sun, and the moon. Children even took turns acting as the sun and moon to demonstrate what happens during an eclipse. In Lower School students experienced the eclipse in a variety of ways. Before the excitement of the eclipse viewing started up, children enjoyed celestial-themed karaoke in the dining hall during lunch. Some watched the eclipse via the live NASA feed; others used pinhole and box viewers, or NASA-approved eclipse glasses with faculty watching and guiding them. Pinhole viewers were fabricated in The Gibbs Family Center for Innovation + Design using 3D printers. Middle School students discussed the eclipse in nearly every class. Fifth and sixth grade science classes prototyped and fabricated pinhole viewers. Upper School science classes went into detail about what happens during total and partial eclipses. The entire Middle and Upper School student population gathered in the Quad to view portions of the eclipse through the NASA-approved glasses.
5th Grade Moves to Middle School In August, the fifth grade began the first phase of a shift into the Middle School division. The Class of 2025 moved from Lower School to the Middle School division, allowing for a 5th and 6th grade curriculum loop. Looping — the practice of a teacher remaining with the same group of students for more than one school year — can have a powerful impact on student learning. It allows teachers to form strong bonds and lasting relationships with students, gives students extra confidence by knowing set routines and expectations, and allows for minimal review in the beginning of the second year loop.
Halo Journalists Participate in Journalism Seminar The Halo staff participated in the Journalism Education Association’s conference at Loyola University New Orleans in September. During the day, students attended seminars on a wide range of topics, from photojournalism to digital portfolio building to environmental journalism to creating a high-impact yearbook. Students will return to Loyola in the spring for the Tom Bell Silver Scribe Competition for area high school journalists.

DONUTS W ITH D A D S Students Collaborate, Think Critically to Solve Puzzles and Test Literature Comprehension
Munching on sweet treats and enjoying time on the playground gave George Cottage and Lower School students the opportunity to spend some quality time with fathers and other loved ones at the annual Donuts with Dads. Lower School Head Ford Dieth ’89 says the event is a great way to meet other StM families. “The St. Martin’s community is such a wonderful group of people,” said Dieth. “Any time we get a chance to be together, it is a special thing.”
It seemed more like a team-oriented race against the clock than an English class, but for Jordan Soyka, that wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. Soyka’s 7th grade class was participating in its first game using a Breakout EDU kit. The kit, which was purchased through a generous Saints Community Organization (SCO) grant, allows teachers to facilitate games where student players use teamwork and critical thinking to solve a series of challenging puzzles in order to open the locked box. Modeled after popular escape and puzzle rooms, the game helps teachers review course material while simultaneously teaching teamwork, problem solving, critical thinking, and troubleshooting. Soyka designed several online forms and quizzes to test student knowledge of a book the class has been discussing, Fever, 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson. He specifically chose the historical fiction novel to allow for cross-curricular collaboration with Julie Warren’s history class. Reading and discussing the novel allowed students to gain an empathetic
understanding of the historical time period. Students collaborated to complete online quizzes. Correct answers unlocked a series of math puzzles and riddles, which helped students uncover codes to unlock physical padlocks on the Breakout box. As they opened each lock, they placed it in their “parking lot.” At any given time, students could peek around the room and see the other teams’ progress based on the number of locks in their “parking lot.”
George Cottage Head Holly Dalferes agrees. “I love the opportunity to welcome the loved ones of our youngest Saints,” said Dalferes. “Parents and special friends enjoy getting to meet each other and see the spaces where their children learn and grow. It truly is a great event.”
Working in small groups, students began problem solving immediately, ignited by teamwork and critical thinking. As groups began to solve challenges, they announced when they began unlocking boxes, fueling the other groups to work even more intently to catch up.
“Everyone was excited and engaged, and it allowed me to reinforce a lot of material I would have otherwise quizzed them on,” said Soyka.

LOWER SCHOOL PLAYGROUND BLESSING With beautiful weather serving as a fitting backdrop, Lower School students and teachers, former faculty, and parents dedicated the new Lower School playground in honor of Miss Janet on Oct. 25. The new space features two new play structures, improved drainage, and new landscaping. Numerous members of the St. Martin’s community worked together to renovate the space. A portion of the proceeds from the 2017 Spring Gala provided the foundational gift. (The Gala was chaired by Melanie Branton Manzella ’87.) The Palmisano family
was instrumental in helping with the necessary site work and construction. The Palmisanos and several other StM Lower School families gave generously to the project. Chase Mullin and Mullin Landscape Associates assisted with the landscaping. Additionally, Miss Janet’s family, colleagues, and friends, including Kerry Vogt, Alma Roohi ’83, and the Dieth family also helped make the new playground possible. In “Earnest” St. Martin’s Performing Arts Department presented a production of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest, Nov. 8-10 in the Solomon Theater. The farcical comedy of social conventions centered on the carefree Algernon Moncrieff and the anxious John Worthing as they invent alter egos: the invalid “Bunbury” and a fictitious brother, “Ernest.” Hilarity ensues. Upper School students made up the bulk of the cast, which included: Grayson Doyle, Jules France, Nic Lobrano, Bree Milioto, Katie Oster, Margot Scott, and Annabeth Talbot. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, representing less than one percent of high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.
ALL-ACADEMIC COMPOSITE HONOREES Three St. Martin’s athletes — seniors Bryce Monier, Alexandra Bartholomew, and Chloe Bartholomew — were named to LHSAA All-Academic Composite Teams. The LHSAA All-Academic Award Program Composite Teams recognizes student athletes who have earned a six-semester un-weighted 4.0 GPA. THREE-PEAT! SAINTS SWEEP CROSS COUNTRY STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
THREE IS A MAGIC NUMBER FOR ST. MARTIN’S CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS. Both the boys and girls teams won state Class 1A titles on Nov. 13 in Natchitoches. The wins mark the boys’ third consecutive state championship and the girls’ first in team history.
The girls team had four top-10 finishers and compiled 36 points, beating out Covenant Christian at 64. The Saints were led by freshman Isabella Bartholomew (second in 19:59.36) and seniors Chloe (third) and Alexandra (sixth) Bartholomew. No. 8 finisher Anabella Imbornone rounded out the Saints’ top 10 runners. Seventh grader Rian McManus closed out the scoring five with her top 20 finish. The boys also had four runners in the top 10 of the boys race. Junior Benjamin Bone was second with a three-mile time of 16:07.49. He had the 15th fastest time on the state meet course for all divisions and earned a place on the Louisiana Track & Field Coaches Association Composite Boys Cross Country Team. Juniors Samuel Kellum and Rico Coleman were second and third, and senior Bryce Monier finished seventh. “We did what we needed to do to get the win,” Monier said. “I think it (title) speaks to the program we have built. The team culture is such that every year we can get it back together to win.”

“It really has been a title that was three total years in the making,” senior Alexandra Bartholomew said. “We couldn’t do it without the support we get from our coaches and teammates.”

SAINTS HEAD TO PLAYOFFS • Football went to the first round of LHSAA state playoffs, where they fell to Vermillion Catholic. • Volleyball was the 6th seed in LHSAA state playoffs. They won the 2nd round match vs. Ascension Catholic, but fell to Ascension Episcopal in quarterfinals • Girls Cross Country Class 1A state champions, first in team history • Boys Cross Country Class 1A state champions, third-consecutive state championship • Girls Swimming took home a third place finish in the LHSAA state tournament • Boys Swimming finished fifth in the LHSAA state tournament
MIDDLE SCHOOL FLAG FOOTBALL The 5th/6th grade flag football team, led by coach Pat LaForge, were the 2017 New Orleans Athletic League champions. The team closed out their undefeated season with a 7-0 win over Stuart Hall.

Teaching Tech Students learn invaluable skills through project-based technology course
W
hen St. Martin’s Technical Theater Director Emily Ross needed a way to monitor and protect theatre equipment from Louisiana’s notoriously high humidity, she sought out the technology department, who then turned to senior Collin Shannon.
Shannon and sophomore Raphael Figueroa are enrolled in an Upper School course called Independent Study in Computer Applications. Director of Technology James Huval and Network Administrator/Technology Coordinator Gary Innerarity teach the course. “We’re working on a humidity sensor that would take a reading of the temperature and humidity in the room,” Shannon said. “The device will send a text message when the readings measure over a certain point.” Shannon said building a sensor takes some research, a lot of trial and error, and a little bit of coding knowledge, but the end result will help solve a real problem. The project, Huval says, is a typical one in the class.
An Alum’s Perspective Jonathan Davis ’17 believes the independent study course and his experiences working with Huval and Innerarity will have a lasting effect on not only his knowledge of information technology, but also his work ethic and ability to handle stressful situations. The LSU freshman currently holds an MTA Networking Fundamentals certification and has worked in the IT field at New Orleans Integrated Technologies. “I will forever be grateful for the chance to join the internship class,” Davis said. “The experiences I had in the class helped me become more confident with my IT job. I use many of the skills I learned in the class to help me get through my day at work.” “St. Martin’s has given me the skills I needed to thrive in college and the workforce,” he said. “I hope I will be able to affect other lives like [Huval and Innerarity] have affected mine.”

“An important part of the independent study is for students to find ways to design and build solutions to everyday problems using technology,” Huval said. The project-based course engages students in troubleshooting issues, allows them to select a long-term project to work on, and teaches them how build a computer. “I’m interested in going into the technology field in the future,” said Shannon. “I’m also interested in biology and medicine. So much of what we do in this class involves research and coding, which are skills I know I can apply the future.” Figueroa agrees. His interest is specifically in coding, which he has been able to explore freely through the coursework. “I really enjoy the way this class allows me to learn while working on a project,” he said. “I enjoy doing the research and collaborating on a project.” Innerarity and Huval say their goal is for students to learn lifelong skills and become more marketable for college and their future careers. “Anything you do can benefit from a knowledge of technology,” Huval said. “In the workforce, employees with these skills often gain more responsibilities and earn promotions and increases in pay.”
Upper School students have access to the technology internship class, as well as an introductory networking course taught by Huval aimed at earning Microsoft Technology Associate Networking Fundamentals certification. Aligning with the Upper School’s college preparedness program, St. Martin’s is researching various resources to offer Computer Science Advanced Placement courses in the coming years. Computer science drives innovation throughout the US economy, but it remains a minor part of many schools’ curricula. According to Code.org, computing occupations are the number one source of all new wages in the country. As the worldwide demand for technology and engineering grows, Huval says students must be prepared to use logic, imagination, creativity, and research to explore the possibilities of what could be — and to create solutions that benefit the end user. “Ultimately our hope is that the experiences students have in our classes help them realize their potential to make changes that will impact the world around them,” Huval said.

St. Martin’s Day by Tony Manzella ’18
St. Martin’s has been observing the feast day of its patron saint since the school’s inception. Today’s St. Martin’s Day celebrations open with an all-school chapel service, followed by the Discovery Hunt. The hunt pairs older students with younger ones, as “big” and “little” buddies, encouraging students to work together and learn more about their school and community. The buddies close out the day with a picnic lunch in the Saints Hall Quad. Leading up to St. Martin’s Day, students in all grade levels coordinate and work a variety of fundraising events to benefit a chosen charity. Senior Tony Manzella, son of Melanie Branton Manzella ’87 and Tony Manzella, Jr., recounts why St. Martin’s Day is one of his favorite StM traditions. For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved St. Martin’s Day. That’s probably because I’ve experienced so many of them. Since my first year at St. Martin’s in pre-kindergarten, StM Day has always been one of my favorite days of the year. When I was in Lower School, I felt so cool to have a big buddy. As I grew older, I loved having the chance to be a big buddy. Getting to interact with students of all ages and being together as an entire school is one of the best things about the day. Even when Lower School, Middle School and Upper School are split up during the games, you are still having fun with people from different grades. For me, the best StM Day was last year when my group finally won the Discovery Hunt. We were paired with the kindergarten class, and we were all so excited to hear our group’s name called during the closing ceremony. Every year I hoped that I would be a winner. Finally getting to be one was something I’ll never forget. Going into StM Day this year, I had mixed feelings. I was excited to finally be a senior, but also sad because I knew it was my last one. It is crazy to think I’ll never get to experience another StM Day. But I will always be able to think back and remember those special days.

me for books Now more than ever, St. Martin’s libraries function as the heart of the school
W
When St. Martin’s librarians Celeste Porche and Ethel Madden purchase books for the school’s catalog, they are each thinking of specific students.
“I always have an individual child in mind. I consider books I know they’ve loved in the past and try to think of new ones they’ll love equally as much,” Madden said, with an intensity that makes it clear she is passionate about what she does and truly knows students’ interests. Her colleague, St. Martin’s Director of Libraries Celeste Porche, agrees. “I often focus on the students who don’t think of themselves as readers,” Porche said. “If I can find that one book that makes them realize reading is for everyone, it makes me unbelievably happy and fulfilled.” This is the level of dedication that the two bring to their work at St. Martin’s every day. The pair oversee St. Martin’s two libraries — the Martin Family Library and Lower School Learning Commons — which combined house more than 40,000 books.
21ST CENTURY LIBRARY To some, libraries may conjure images of dust-covered volumes, card catalogs, and a scowling librarian “shushing” patrons. One look into St. Martin’s libraries shatters all those stereotypes.
Porche and Madden serve as knowledge facilitators and regularly collaborate with faculty across each discipline and grade level to help students think critically, draw conclusions, and apply knowledge.
“Sometimes it gets quite loud, and I love it!” Madden said. “We role play with characters, play research activity games, present and debate book reports and, of course read books out loud.”
Porche works with Middle and Upper School students and their teachers in the Martin Family Library. Through her collaborative work with faculty, she helps students evaluate online sources for bias and omission, understand effective research methods and filter information effectively, and master the use of databases for research. The goal, she says, is to not only teach information literacy and increase academic success, but also to expose students to a diverse, global perspective.
Each of the activities Madden carefully designs serves as an extension to the curriculum. Every week, students from the Cottage through fourth grade spend time in the library learning to process language, read, and improve their reading comprehension skills. Madden says she wants St. Martin’s students to view the library as their home away from home. “Nothing makes me happier than seeing students curled up in bean bag chairs without their shoes, completely absorbed in books,” she said. Time and again, research shows that regular library use increases student success. In addition, collaborative academic programs and services involving the library enhance student learning.
Middle School students (fifth through eighth grade) attend weekly library classes that help students develop a strong foundation of academic research skills in preparation for the rigors of Upper School and college. Information literacy is the heart of the Middle School research skills curriculum. In this networked world, it is crucial for students to know how to think critically about the information they are consuming.

DID YOU KNOW? The Martin Family Library contains nearly 27,000 volumes. The Lower School Learning Commons contains nearly 15,000 books.
On April 28, 1979, the Martin Family Library caught fire, damaging several adjacent classrooms and offices, as well as more than 14,000 volumes. For 18 months, faculty and students used a temporary library while the library was being rebuilt. The rebuilt library officially opened in October 1980 and was dedicated as the Martin Family Library the following month.
“While it is tempting to assume that as ‘digital natives’ young people know exactly what they are doing when they search online, studies consistently show that many firstyear college students are arriving on campus without the most basic information literacy skills they need,” said Porche. NEW SCHOOL RULES Over the last five years, the St. Martin’s libraries have circulated more than 55,055 books and other resources to its students. According to a local book and catalog system specialist, the school’s annual Lower School circulation ranks as one of the highest per student in comparison to other private schools in Louisiana. St. Martin’s librarians attribute their high circulation activities to removing some of the “old school” library rules. The pair have intentionally eliminated library fines and do not limit the number of books that students check out. They take specific care to encourage students to read outside of their comfort zones to broaden their horizons. Porche and Madden say they view themselves as the liaisons between students, parents, and teachers to ensure that students are reading appropriate books at their specific reading levels. The two also have a contemporary approach to updating the libraries’ collection.

“Some of the new additions to the Martin Family Library collection include a graphic novels section and a large fiction section dedicated especially to Middle School students,” Porche said. “Adults can be skeptical about the merit of graphic novels and comics, but I believe very strongly that taking a child’s interest seriously is the most important thing that librarians, teachers, and parents can do to support children’s development as readers. Almost everything I do revolves around that philosophy.” ADVENTURES IN READING Madden’s approach to the Lower School’s weekly library classes centers on themed lessons. During the week of Halloween, the library was transformed into a scene from Harry Potter complete with floating candles. A hidden fan blew Hogwarts envelopes while students dined at a long table draped in black. Decked in Harry Potter glasses or costumes, students noshed on edible magic wands and drank colored potions while they celebrated the 20th anniversary of the book series. Madden says creating the scenes for the students to “feel” and “act out” the plots increases their interest and comprehension. Last December the library was transformed into The Polar Express, while students acted out the children’s book that tells the story of a train filled with children on their way
to visit the North Pole. Madden greeted students outside the library door and gave each one a ticket to board the train. When they entered the library, she punched a hole in their tickets and led them to their seats on the “train.” While Madden read, the students acted out the story. After discussing the true meaning of Christmas, students enjoyed hot cocoa. “You do not see students riding imaginary trains and drinking hot cocoa in many libraries,” Madden said. “This is what makes our library program so special and unique.” The Lower School’s Bookworm Club celebrates students who love reading. Club members created a t-shirt and even had a secret handshake. When they saw a need to replenish books lost by a Baton Rouge School Library during the Baton Rouge Flood in 2016, the club organized a school-wide community service book collection project. Madden and Porche also work together to arrange author visits throughout the school year, giving students the opportunity to meet children’s authors and hear first-hand how and why they write books, reinforcing the skills learned in the libraries.
SUMMER READING SHIFT Nurturing a love of reading in St. Martin’s students is one of Porche’s biggest goals. And for good reason. Studies show that reading books, especially fiction, has been shown to increase empathy. Developing social tools such as empathy and emotional intelligence is essential for helping young children grow into successful adults.
This year’s Middle School Summer Reading program offered students the freedom to select a majority of books on their own. Middle School students were given a list of 15 books to choose from, all suggested by St. Martin’s faculty and staff. Students chose one of the books for participation in a Reading Circle. In addition, students were challenged to read for a minimum of 30 minutes each day, for a total of four books over the course of the summer.
Studies continue to show that, when practiced over a lifetime, reading and language acquisition skills can support healthy brain function.
“As parents and educators, we must encourage every student to develop a love of reading that is genuine and personal,” said Porche. “The most powerful way to accomplish this is to give them complete and total freedom to choose what they read. There is no other skill that is more essential to academic success across grade levels and disciplines than reading.”

ne of eighth grader Kylar Coleman’s favorite St. Martin’s athletic memories is being disqualified for a false start in the hurdles at the 2017 high school regional track meet. This may sound strange, but that attitude is
exactly what Athletic Director Sue Bower is hoping to build in
St. Martin’s athletes.
“It was such a sad moment for me,” Coleman said. “But now I’m glad that it happened. It was a moment that I learned from and I don’t think I’ll make that mistake again.” Coleman is a stand-out multi-sport athlete who participates in track and field and basketball. Since taking the reins of St. Martin’s athletics in spring 2016, Bower has made a number of changes in the school’s athletic program, starting with the philosophy of St. Martin’s athletes. “Failure is one of life’s greatest teachers,” Bower said. “Some of the most successful athletes will tell you that the ability to reevaluate why they didn’t reach their goals, and then change direction and move forward, is what makes them so great.”

Curriculum Shift
It is this mindset that Bower and the Athletic Department are working to instill in all St. Martin’s athletes competing in the school’s 20-plus Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA)-sanctioned teams. Bower says a key part of building scholar athletes in the 21st century is the focus on the development of the entire person, far beyond the results on the scoreboard.
Numerous studies confirm the fact that students who participate in athletic activities have higher GPA’s and attendance rates, and score higher on standardized tests. Athletic participation also positively correlates to higher test scores in both science and math. In particular, girls who play sports have much higher achievement levels in science and math.
Part of St. Martin’s athletic philosophy is the focus on building mental skills before the physical athletic skills, Bower says.
“Excelling in the classroom and on the playing field go hand-in-hand,” Bower said. “We will never compromise our academic rigor or high standards to win. We constantly challenge our scholar athletes to develop into their best selves as athletes, teammates, students, and ultimately, citizens of the world.” Bower says St. Martin’s athletic philosophy also embraces diversity and inclusion. “We want our third graders to have opportunities to learn fundamentals,” she said. “We want girls to have as many sports options as boys. We want our Lower and Middle School athletes to prepare themselves for high school athletics, which is at a much higher competitive plane.
A recent look at St. Martin’s Upper School students showed that more than 70% participated in athletics. Those students had an average GPA of 3.25 or higher. The cross country and swimming teams had an average weighted GPA of 3.91 and 4.29, respectively. The Athletic Department is working closely with the Admission Office to attract future athletes. Coaches and athletic staff lead tours and help serve as admission representatives. “We want prospective families to know the wide range of competitive sports options at St. Martin’s,” Bower said. “And we want them to understand our athletic philosophy, which focuses on development at the lower and middle school levels.” St. Martin’s is committed to providing tuition assistance to all families that qualify, says Admission Director Will Fletcher. “We don’t want to have a qualified applicant walk away because of our tuition,” Fletcher said. “Our goal is to let as many people as possible know about the great things happening at St. Martin’s right now, including our athletics program.” It seems to be working. Enrollment at St. Martin’s has increased by 10 percent in the past year, and Bower says participation in athletics at St. Martin’s is also growing. Moving Middle School PE to the end of the day and allowing teams to practice at that time has encouraged increased participation.

“Coaches are working with their athletes on skills like mental toughness, self-motivation, maintaining concentration, setting goals, and maintaining a positive attitude in the face of adversity,” Bower said. “We want our Upper School athletes to compete at a high level, and I find the benefits of preparing to give your best in a big game against strong competition are parallel with the benefits of taking a rigorous course load.” Bower says while it is important for coaches to work on those skills with their players, they also can’t wait until an athlete is a member of a competitive team. “We’ve shifted the PE curriculum to mirror the sport seasons,” Bower said. “The goal is to create lifelong athletes who are knowledgeable and competent in the sports they play.” While their Upper School counterparts are competing in soccer and basketball in the winter, for example, students in Lower and Middle School are learning age-appropriate skills and the fundamentals of those same sports in their PE classes. Bower says the Athletic Department worked together as a team to formalize the curriculum, and continues to identify ways to improve upon it.
“A shift like this [in philosophy] requires a high level of expertise in the coaches who help implement it,” Bower said. In the first 18 months of her tenure, St. Martin’s brought in a number of new coaches, including Director of Soccer Bobby Velasquez and Middle School Football Coach Don Schwab. Bower, who spent 14 years as the coach of an elite college golf team, has taken over the coaching reins of the golf program. In addition, recent alumni athletes have joined the coaching staff, including former all-state goalie Jonathan Waters ’12 (soccer), Ben Amoss ’11 (basketball), Dylan Israel ’12 (track), and former multisport standouts Desmond McGovern ’15 and Kayla Gerard ’15. “Their eagerness to return is a testament to the positive environment of St. Martin’s athletics,” said Bower. “What impressed me about each of these coaches was their ability to work with and motivate a diverse group of students.” In March 2017, Bower and Head of School Merry Sorrells also announced the appointment of New Orleans Saints Hall of Famer Deuce McAllister, who joined the athletic department as an athletic consultant. Three months later, Frank Gendusa was named head football coach, effective beginning in the 2018 – 2019 season, and John McDonell was appointed interim football coach. Gendusa has more than 38 years of coaching experience, and was the high school coach of multiple National Football League players. McDonell has more than 30 years of collegiate football coaching experience and joins St. Martin’s after serving as Senior Offensive Analyst – Tight Ends at Georgia State University. McDonell has also coached at Tulane University, Stanford, Purdue, University of Memphis, and Bowling Green State University. “Our academics are second to none, and we have the facilities and coaches in place to achieve the same success in athletics,” Bower said.
Student Impact The greatest athletic accomplishment doesn’t appear on a statsheet or scoreboard, but in the lessons students learn and the opportunities they are given through sports. “I love the constant opportunity that we’re given to play one sport — or four sports — and your coaches will support you either way,” said Chloe Bartholomew ’18. Bower says students are encouraged to participate in as many sports as they choose. “We don’t push students to specialize in any one given sport,” Bower said. “One of the great benefits of attending St. Martin’s is the ability to play multiple sports rather than having to focus on a single sport year round.” “St. Martin’s gives you opportunities that you would never get at any other athletic program or school,” said Michael Talbot ’22. “I’ve learned about teamwork, hard work, and effort. If you want something, you have to put all you have into it.” “We’re not done yet,” Bower said. “We continue to refine things and try new things regularly. It’s the same mindset we’re instilling in our athletes — we’re always striving to be better and improve upon where we’ve been.”
Continuing to improve the athletic profile can’t happen without support from the school’s administration, parents, and community, Bower says. “Recruiting high caliber coaches, securing the appropriate equipment to support excellence in performance and safe participation, maintaining our fields and courts and training facilities: all of these come with costs,” Bower said. “Ensuring our scholar athletes have the equipment, coaches, facilities, and resources to compete at the highest level is so important.” To help with that, the school hosts two fundraising campaigns that benefit athletics — Champions Club and the Golf Tournament. The Champions Club’s goal is to raise an additional $75,000 each year which will specifically help underwrite the costs of the school’s athletic budget. In its first year, the Club achieved that goal and hopes to grow even more this year. The Golf Tournament also continues to grow. The tournament on Nov. 3, 2017 was the largest in its history, with more than 100 golfers participating. See photos from the Golf Tournament on page 32. The 2018-19 Champions Club membership drive kicks off in March.

Lifelong learning is not just for students at St. Martin’s – it’s for teachers too. Every year, through a variety of resources, StM commits funding to the school’s professional development program to ensure the faculty’s knowledge, skills, strategies, and curriculum are following best practices and empowering best possible student outcomes. Founded by Dr. and Mrs. Tejas Godiwala, and now in its 20th year, the Godiwala Fellowship for Innovation Education Award recognizes and rewards creative academic programs by encouraging continued innovations, collaboration, and instructional excellence among faculty. Lower and Middle School Spanish teacher Sara Broussard was the 2016-17 award recipient and attended an intensive graduate program at the acclaimed Middlebury College in Vermont. There she spent six weeks without speaking any English with professors or classmates, taking three classes a day: Advanced Spanish Grammar, Literary and Film Analysis, and Advanced Academic Writing. “It was a surprising experience to be in the classroom again as a full-time student,” Broussard said. “In honor of Dr. Godiwala and with my students in mind, I set a goal of earning all A’s and participating as much as possible academically. This goal helped me push through the six weeks of extremely demanding course work. I learned a lot from the experience of struggling with Spanish again. Now I have more empathy for my beginning students.” She spent hours conversing each day with other Spanish teachers, who spoke candidly about their own programs’ strengths and weaknesses. Those discussions helped Broussard realize how special the St. Martin’s Spanish program truly is.
“Our unique program is highly effective because St. Martin’s values its teachers’ growth and the idea that all students should become proficient in a language,” said Broussard. “Because our Spanish program is based on the Comprehensible Input approach to language acquisition, we teachers have a lot of control and flexibility. We are able to reach reluctant learners because we make the activities based on real, compelling classroom communication. At St. Martin’s I am able to immediately incorporate great new ideas, like the ones I learned from this summer’s experience,” said Broussard. Since her training, Broussard said she is challenging herself to spend as much time as possible in comprehensible Spanish with her classes because she knows the incredible results of sheltered immersion.
“It feels great to return to StM with more tools in my tool kit for Lower and Middle School Spanish! I sincerely appreciate the professional development support that I received from Dr. Godiwala and St. Martin’s,” says Broussard.

Miss Janet Russo
Remembering
The Pocket Lady With her whistle in hand, Miss Janet could command the attention of any Lower School student with ease. It was a skill many of her colleagues were in awe of, including former St. Martin’s teacher Kerry Vogt. “Miss Janet could get children to listen to her whistle better than any psychology the rest of the teachers tried,” said Vogt. “The children loved her and would do anything for her — especially when she blew her whistle!” Janet Russo, more often known as Miss Janet, was a dedicated mother, grandmother, and educator who taught at St. Martin’s for nearly half a century. She taught Lower School physical education and worked as a first grade assistant. Miss Janet retired in 1998 after 30 years of employment by the school, but continued to serve frequently as a substitute teacher for several years following her retirement. In 2009 Miss Janet was honored with the Dorothy Porter Service Award, which honors an exemplary St. Martin’s citizen
who consistently serves the school with time, talent, and treasures, and who represents the motto, philosophy, and mission of St. Martin’s. In her acceptance speech, Miss Janet referenced her celebrated role as the “Pocket Lady,” which began in 1976 during Heavenly Days, the school fair. “We filled bags with goodies and put them into the pockets of a long colorful skirt,” Russo said at the time. “It cost one ticket to ‘pick my pocket’ and it was the biggest moneymaker that day. A tradition was started!” Pre-kindergarten teacher Alma Quiroz Roohi ’83 worked with Miss Janet for several years. Miss Janet also taught her and her children at St. Martin’s. “Miss Janet was the most affectionate teacher and knew every child’s name,” Roohi said. “When alums came back to campus, they always looked for her. She had a way of making everyone feel so special, whether they were four years old or forty years old!” Janet Russo passed away on Nov. 11, 2016 after a courageous battle with cancer. On Oct. 25, 2017, a Lower School playground was dedicated in her memory. Miss Janet’s Playground features two new play structures, improved drainage, and new landscaping. Her famous pocket skirt is being prepared for display in the Lower School near the playground that bears her name. See page 10 for more infomation about the dedication of the Lower School playground.

“On the playground, Miss Janet was full of fun while being fair and firm in her discipline,” said Kerry Vogt. “For decades, students have come back to St. Martin’s to see Miss Janet and recall their memories on this playground. It was such a joy to see how much she loved the children and watch how much they loved her.”

In life you either win, you lose, or you tie — but you have to compete. That was the message from Allyson Askew ’74 to those sitting in the Solomon Theater for the Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony. As a member of the 1971 state champion swim team that set two new records, qualified one member for AllAmerican Honors, and won the state meet by 30 points, Askew is no stranger to competition and success. Neither are her teammates Debbie Crawford, Diane Deane, Dale Evans, Carol Horn, Kay Kemp, Penny Miles, Jan Rydstrom, Wendy Schultz, Jocelyn Stedman, and Janet Welch. The team, which was coached by Rev. Joseph Beckman, was the first StM team to achieve a state championship, an impressive feat at a time before Title IX was enacted. What is equally impressive is that these women went on to win subsequent championships. 40 | The Bell
Winning championships was also familiar for 2017 inductees Charles Steen ’60 and Catherine Betz ’98. Though separated by three decades, they share a striking number of similarities. Both Saints won state titles in track and field events — Steen was a state champion in the high and low hurdles in 1960. Betz won two consecutive state titles in the javelin. Both were threeseason multi-sport competitors and were named StM’s most athletic. Both were named to all-district teams. At the induction ceremony, Steen also spoke about competition, specifically StM’s drive to be the best school in the area. Whether he was discussing wins on the field or relationships with teachers, his stories seemed familiar to students in the audience. The fact that accomplishments from the past are echoed in current StM experiences is a testament to the St. Martin’s Spirit that remains alive. Steen’s experiences competing at StM left lasting memories
and, he said, “gave rise to friendships and a closeness that exist to this day.” The same is true for Betz. The lessons she learned competing for St. Martin’s are ones that left an enduring impression, and are still true for today’s students. Often the losses had a stronger impact on Betz than the wins, because it was from those that she learned the most. “Don’t be afraid to fail, because you will,” said Betz. “Failure is an opportunity which then turns into a choice.” Betz summed up the message from the 2017 inductees by adding, “Choose to be the best version of yourself with a relentless drive to improve.” To read more about the 2017 nominees and St. Martin’s Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame, or to nominate, visit stmsaints.com/halloffame.

Barbara Farris ’94 Inducted into Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame

Barbara Farris, of the Class of 1994, was inducted into the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame earlier this fall. Halo staff member Jade Punch ‘20 recently sat down with the storied Saint to talk about her accomplishments, life at St. Martin’s, and what athletics means to her. While playing basketball throughout her life, Barbara Farris ’94 never celebrated Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s, or Mardi Gras breaks, but the passion for the sport that she learned to embrace superseded any time away from her family. On Aug. 5, Farris was one of just four people to be inducted into the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl. Of those four inductees, Farris was the only female. “I was tremendously humbled and appreciative of the honor, being that I saw the class of people who were inducted with me,” Farris said. “I’ve always loved sports. I’ve always appreciated the tremendous blessings and opportunities they’ve provided me in my life. I never took any opportunities, any awards, any person I’ve met throughout my career for granted. I’ve just always been appreciative.” St. Martin’s Athletic Director Sue Bower worked at Tulane as the Women’s Golf Head Coach during Farris’s playing time. She concurs with Stockton’s high praise of Farris as the star of the women’s basketball team.

“Farris really put Tulane basketball on the map, single handedly,” Bower said. “She was that instrumental to take Tulane athletics to another level.” With Farris at its core, the team attended NCAA tournaments for four years in a row and won its first championship in 1997. The team was nationally ranked for the first time in Tulane’s history. After her years at Tulane, Farris continued her basketball career, playing professionally for the American Basketball League and the Women’s National Basketball Association. For the ABL, she played in many different countries such as France, Spain, and Korea. In the WNBA, she played for the Detroit Shock and the New York Liberty. “I think St. Martin’s did a great job of preparing me for the academic demands of college,” Farris said. “The teachers, instructors, and administrators prepared me for the demands academically—how to prepare, how to study, how to budget, and manage my time correctly in order to ensure success at the next level.”
Scattered Saints 1960 Charlie Steen was honored to be inducted into StM Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame. His remarks to the students at StM were great, telling them of the lifelong friendships he developed at StM, and he had praise for the fine teachers he had. See page 40 to read more about the 2017 Hall of Fame. Brooks Emory was honored by Ochsner Hospital with the establishment of the Brooks Emory Lung Transplant Fund. As a tribute to his career, a portrait of Brooks now hangs in the hospital lobby at the main Ochsner campus. The class of 1960 continues to travel frequently. Nancy Kinser and George Kinser spent a week on their boat on the downeast coast of Maine. Hackett and Nan Cummins just had their Roads Scholar trip to Cuba cancelled, but they did enjoy trips to Puerto Rico and St. Maarten prior to any hurricanes. Doug Johnson and Doug Howard have gone shooting for grouse this fall in the Yorkshire countryside. Earlier in the year Doug and Elinor stayed at the Gage Hotel in Marathon, Texas, a great place near Big Bend National Park. Doc Livingston and Bonnie took a two-week Smithsonian trip to Rome, Florence, Tuscany, and Venice, and loved it. Jim Connor and Charlotte went to the north woods of Wisconsin, a reminder of his boyhood days, for a week of fabulous fishing, or so he thought. He reported not a nibble, and he learned that August was not the time to fish there. Tammy Gamble reports that she sold her beautiful pony to a friend for his autistic grandchild, but she and her husband Harry still have three other horses. Harry is finishing a book and Tammy’s looking forward to some remodeling after publication. Lizann Hardy reports the great news that her trip to the oncologist for a 6-month check-up shows all is well. Patti Leathers said she and her husband John are back home after John’s time in various medical facilities in the Kansas City area. Mary Sue Nelson Roniger has been loving the months she’s been in Connecticut with Jack. There she has found towns where her ancestors lived five and six generations ago. Both John Bolles and Di Crawford also have relatives from the same area! As noted on in the memorial on page 47 Carlos Tappan de Arrigunaga passed away in June. He was a talented flamenco guitarist and economics professor, and will be missed greatly by classmates and friends.

1962 In May, Tulane University’s Emeritus Club induction ceremony and awards, the annual alumni event that honors two distinguished classmates, recognized Walter E. Blessey Jr. with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Blessey spends time between Mandeville,

Charleston, Mt. Carmel, and the Destin area. During Hurricane Harvey this fall his company’s boats and crews performed at the highest level. They had no lost boats but the office in Channelview had 10 feet of water. Blessey Charities was able to help out families that were harmed by the hurricane. John Allen is still working and pursuing his passion for riding roller coasters. As a member of American Coaster Enthusiasts (ACE), he has been on Travel Channel, Discovery Channel, and local news clips. He and wife Ann still live in the metro Richmond area and will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in November 2018. Judi Weissmiller McGee left StM after 6th grade, but still keeps up with her 1962 classmates and they with her. Judi’s father was the football team doctor for several years and she remembers sitting on the bench with the players. Jamison “Jimmy” Monroe went through difficulties during Hurricane Harvey. He was evacuated by boat in the middle of the night. Fortunately they had just closed on a new home that provided a safe haven. G. Perry Eastman III was also impacted by Hurricane Harvey. His daughter was high and dry, but had several families living with her, including his nephew, his wife and two children. Perry’s youngest son, Michael Eastman ’06, was working on recovery efforts at their company’s area branch (Auto-Chlor Services, LLC) which was totally under water. Marsha Dayton Thomas is living in Columbus, Texas but was thankfully spared from storm damage. Class of 1962 members Carol Priscilla Williams, Ray Fontenot, Barcus Jernigan, and Susan Mendenhall Cassano met for lunch at the Sazerac New Orleans Bistro in Fort Collins, Colorado recently. They had such a really good time reminiscing and catching up that they decided to make it an annual event.
1964 Karen Gauthier Harmony recently expanded her business, Harmony Quilts, which are now available online at harmonyquilts.net. Her work includes over 40 years of quilting projects. Karen is an artist member of the Arkansas Arts Council.
1968 REUNION YEAR The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) presented the 2017 Ward Burdick Award for Distinguished Service to Pathology to Fred H. Rodriguez, Jr., MD, MASCP, during its 2017 Annual Meeting. This award honors ASCP’s Fellow members who have made a significant contribution to pathology through sustained service to the profession and to ASCP. Fred is a current member of the StM Board of Visitors. He recently retired from the Department of Veterans Affairs Veterans Health Administration, but he is still

teaching at the LSU School of Medicine. Fred is active in the alumni associations of the LSU School of Medicine and the University of New Orleans, and he is president-elect of the LSU School of Medicine Alumni association. Fred is celebrating 44 years of marriage to his wife, Susan. Both Fred and Susan are enjoying retirement by frequently visiting three grandkids in Atlanta and three grandkids in Cincinnati. They have also travelled in 2016 and 2017 to France, the Holy Land, St. Bart’s, Ireland, and Canada. The class of 1968 is pleased to announce that a 50-Year Reunion will be held over the weekend of May 18, 2018. Friday, May 18, the group will meet for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres at the Southern Yacht Club. Saturday, May 19, the class will gather at Brennan’s Restaurant on Royal Street for a sit-down dinner. 1973 Janet Welch, Wendy Schulz Ruckman, and Lynn Stedman Pring were inducted into the St. Martin’s Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame as members of StM’s first State Champion Girls Swim team.
1974 Along with other team members, Kay Kemp Gannon and Allyson Askew were inducted into the StM Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame this fall. Allyson spoke on behalf of the team in front of the Upper School student body. Also inducted but unable to attend was Carol Humphreys. See page 40 to read more about the 2017 Hall of Fame.
1975 In September Deb Crawford and Carol Horn Huber were back on campus to be inducted into the St. Martin’s Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame. Also there was Carol’s husband Murray Huber. Also inducted but unable to attend were Dale Evans Siegrist and Diane Deane Smith.
1977 In September, Anderson Baker was a guest on an episode of Out to Lunch on WWNO 89.9 FM. The topic was the expanding area of cyber insurance.

1994 Barbara Farris was inducted into the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame in August. Read more on page 42. Also, Jason and Collin Schuhmacher opened up a retail Beef Jerky store in Las Vegas (www.VegasBeef Jerky.com and www.OrderBeef Jerky.com). Ford Church continues to run Cottonwood Institute, a nonprofit in Denver that connects underserved students to the outdoors and empowers them to take action to improve the world around them for generations. The institute just celebrated its 13th anniversary as a company. Brian Axelrad was elected Chairman of the Marine Chemists Association and began his 2-year term in July 2017. This is a national organization that has been around since 1938. Brent Beaulieu visited all 30 major league baseball stadiums in the last 12 months and concluded his tour of the stadiums by taking a game in with his dad, Leo.
1995 Dr. Margaret Neighbors Trumble recently founded Avenue Animal and Wellness + Emergency. Trumble has been practicing emergency veterinary medicine since receiving her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2008. Trumble is acting president of Southeast Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association (SLVA) and has sat on the board for the past three years. She is also a member of Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care Society (VECCS) and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).
1998 Jennifer Dinsdale Poly lives in Paris with her husband and two sons. She works as a lawyer in a French industrial company. This fall Catherine Betz was inducted to the the StM Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame. See page 40 to read more about the 2017 Hall of Fame.

In September, Kristin Howard married Jake Deschene. Among others celebrating were fellow Saints Becky Quintal and Heather Boos Crandall. Peterson Harter was the officiant for the ceremony.
Hurricane Nate derailed the Class of 1982’s 35-Year Reunion plans, but the class has rescheduled for Saturday, January 13, 2018.
1984 André Berot Spring is living in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and has accepted a job with Novartis Pharmaceutical Corporation in the exciting role of Executive Director, heading the Strategic Market Access team in the US in the oncology business. 2006 Dr. Celeste A. Block recently joined Old Metairie Orthodontics. After graduating summa cum laude from Florida State University, she completed her dental training from Louisiana State University School of Dentistry, and received her certificate of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics and a Master’s of Dental Science from the University of Tennessee, Department of Orthodontics.
2007 In May Sarah Beth Pansano was married to John Molidor. Bridesmaids included Ellen Cunningham, Adele Le Gardeur, and Lauren Waters Knapp.
2009 In May of this year Makenzie Kozojet completed her Master’s of Liberal Arts from Tulane University. She just started a new job at Tulane as a Development Officer for the Annual Fund doing frontline fundraising. She is excited to start traveling and talking with donors, alumni, and other prospects.In August her artwork was featured on the cover of Tulane University’s publication NewcombTulane College: The Collegian 2017.

2010 After graduating from Smith College in 2014, Morgan Augillard has been working for a New Orleans firm, Perez Architecture, in its Brooklyn, New York office as an architectural designer. Currently, Morgan has returned to school to obtain a Master’s in City Planning from MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and is expecting to graduate in the spring of 2019.
2013 This spring, as a member of the Southeastern Louisiana University softball team, Mychal Lynn Truxillo was named an NFCA AllAmerican Scholar-Athlete. To be honored as an NFCA All-American Scholar-Athlete, student athletes must finish with a 3.5 grade point average for the season. Truxillo carried a 3.735 grade point average over the 2016-17 season and played in 41 games, mostly at third base. A preseason All-Southland Conference selection, she finished the year with nine RBIs, two doubles, and a triple.

2015 Ali Cashman is quickly becoming one to watch in the makeup world. This fall one of her videos was featured by NewOrleansLocal.com and her work was featured by POPSUGAR. Whitney Appel, Margaret Ann Bryan, and Riley Kirkpatrick are making their debut this year, and were honored at a party in June. Whitney is a junior at American University in Washington, D.C. where she is a finance major and member of Chi Omega Sorority. Margaret Ann is a junior at Texas Christian University, where she is an early childhood education major with a focus on English as a Second Language, and a member of Phi Mu. Riley is a junior at Tulane University, where she is a business major and a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority.
2016 In July the band Midnight Horizon, featuring Ashton Angelle and Alex Thomas, played at local music venue The House of Blues.

Allison Deutsch ’25 shares the St. Martin’s legacy with several members of her family. The daughter of Leigh Adams Deutsch ’94 and the granddaughter of Judy Fremeaux Adams ’64, Allie is in the first fifth grade class in St. Martin’s history to be part of the Middle School. Participates in? Volleyball, cheerleading, basketball and choir club.

Favorite StM tradition? My favorite tradition is StM Day where we hang out with our buddies. In Lower School it was fun to have an older buddy. Now that I’m in Middle School, I get to be the older buddy!
Favorite spot on campus? The Van Slate yard is my favorite spot on campus. I love playing tether ball during free play.
What has been the most exciting thing about moving to Middle School?
The most exciting part about being in Middle School is all the new teachers I have. There are so many new things to learn for each class. We had different teachers for different subjects in Lower School, but in Middle School each class is something new.
What has surprised you most about Middle School?
What surprised me is how many kids are in Middle School at the same time. Compared to Lower School, it can get a little crowded. We have to be careful when we are at our lockers especially if you have a bottom locker like me.
What is great about St. Martin’s in 15 words or less? All the friends that I meet at StM.

MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD
It is an exciting time to be at St. Martin’s.
My husband, Gerardo, and I have two children at St. Martin’s — a daughter who is a freshman and a son who will graduate this spring. I am also a proud St. Martin’s graduate of the Class of 1985. Being a graduate, a parent, and a member of the board has given me a unique perspective of this incredible school and community. Ana Mesa Ortega ’85 has been a member of the Board of Trustees since August 2013. Her term as Chair began in August 2017.
As our children near adulthood, we are grateful to St. Martin’s for the role it has played in shaping who they are. Our children are confident, curious, and engaged. Most importantly, they love learning. Their enthusiasm is largely attributable to the outstanding faculty and staff at St. Martin’s. This wonderful group of people recognizes and encourages each student’s strengths and also makes each year unique,

THEN In the earliest days of St. Martin’s, the bell was rung multiple times a day to signal the change of classes. Ringing the bell was an honor reserved for designated seniors, who left class early to carry out the task. Throughout the years, the area near the bell became a place for students to relax and chat in between classes. NOW The bell is only rung one day of the school year. Each member of the graduating class earns the honor of ringing the bell, following Senior Chapel, to signal entrance into the ranks of the thousands of St. Martin’s alums across the world.
