MISSION STATEMENT
“We prepare students to thrive in college and in life through faith, scholarship and service.”
Message from the Head of School
Message from the Chairman of the Board of Trustees
Merry Sorrells
Stephen Huber ’89
Friday night lights…the first cool breezes of fall…stands full of excited fans…
I have spent many years connected to St. Martin’s,
players playing…cheerers cheering…and a heaping plate full of ribs, dumplings and fried rice? Yes, Chinese food has become a welcome addition to our Friday night fare, cooked up by our international students and other members of our new Upper School Cooking Club. We have added some new traditions to our longstanding ones, including ribs and dumplings on a Friday night.
as a student, an alum, a member of the Board of Trustees, and the father of children in the Lower School and George Cottage. I can truly say that never in all these years have I been more hopeful or excited for the future of our great school.
We are readying our students for their futures by teaching them to relate to life with a global mindset. Every day we strive to fulfill our school mission “to prepare our students to thrive in college and in life through faith, scholarship and service,” and instilling a global perspective in our students is an important part of that effort.
Lifting the shovel at the groundbreaking of The Gibbs Family Center for Innovation + Design was a landmark moment for me, as I am positive that this building and the program it represents will have an impact on not only our current students, but on the generations to come. I am grateful to Marian and Larry Gibbs and Mémé and Bert Wilson ’77, as co-chairs of our Capital Projects Campaign, for the investment of their time, energy, and resources. I am equally grateful for the incredible generosity of the many donors who are helping to make this dream a reality, and for all of the hard work of our faculty and staff who played such a crucial part in making this program a success.
Our students are gaining a “foot up” in that direction by interacting each day with fellow students who see things from a different viewpont. Experience is the greatest teacher of them all, and our students, both international and domestic, will learn to be ambassadors of their customs and beliefs through the friendships they develop on the courts, fields, stages, hallways and classrooms of St. Martin’s. We began our International Student Program at St. Martin’s with the expectation of growth, community-wide, in our understanding of other cultures, customs, and languages. This year we have added several students to our Upper School: two freshman, six juniors, and a senior. In addition, we hosted a summer program in which three teachers and thirty-nine students visited from our partner school in Hangzhou, China. And we are working toward hosting online curricular exchanges between our classes and theirs. During the 2016 spring break, we anticipate sending some of our teachers and students to visit our partner school in Hangzhou. Our teachers will observe their counterparts and exchange teaching skills. Our students will have the opportunity to sit alongside their Chinese peers in a foreign classroom, and visit cultural landmarks around the country. These opportunities will be available to all of our Upper School students, and not just those studying Mandarin. Through this program, we are cultivating a cultural sophistication in all of our students that will ready them to interact comfortably in an ever-shifting global environment. Knowledge of world geography, facility with world languages, understanding of the global economy, and cross-cultural comprehension are quickly becoming the hallmarks of an educated person. Success in the future workforce will be determined by how well our young people comprehend and relate from a global viewpoint. It is an exciting time at St. Martin’s as we continue to build skills in our students which will prepare them to excel in all aspects and conditions of college, and of life. During the groundbreaking ceremony for The Gibbs Family Center for Innovation + Design, Merry performed the turning of the soil three times as the following prayer was recited: With faith in God, this work is begun and this ground is broken in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

I am equally excited about wonderful opportunities and connections being made through the International Student Program. This program’s success is the result of the commitment of so many individuals, starting with our administrators who were instrumental in making the program a reality. It is truly a testament to the hard work and efforts of our dedicated faculty and staff, who have gone the extra mile to help ensure its success. I am grateful to our student body that has welcomed these students into our school, to our many families who have welcomed them into their homes, and to the international students themselves who have already had such a powerful impact on us. We are a stronger community for their joining us. The new home for our Innovation + Design program and the incorporation of our international students are just two of many incredible examples of the value of a St. Martin’s education. We are preparing our students to succeed in college and in life by adapting to a changing world while remaining true to our values of faith, scholarship and service. Stephen Huber ’89

SCO Back to School Bash
Welcome New Faculty and Staff Annabelle Allen Lower School Spanish & 5th Grade Teacher Devi Anderson Cottage Teacher
This fall St. Martin’s Performing Arts
Department proudly presented To Kill a Mockingbird. This classic American novel by Harper Lee was published in 1960 and was immediately successful, winning the Pulitzer Prize. Scout, a young girl in a quiet Southern town, experiences dramatic events that will affect the rest of her life. Set in 1935, the play illustrates the social issues of the time period. This dramatization of the touching classic tale is a meaningful work of art. After seeing the show, Upper School English teacher Al Tritico commented, “The cast and crew poured themselves into some difficult material with thoughtfulness and grace, and the result is inspiring.” The production was a huge success and the community is eagerly awaiting the upcoming productions of The Odd Couple and Xanadu.
On Sunday, August 16, 2015 the SCO hosted a fun gathering as a
way to welcome back the community for the 2015-2016 school year. Dads manned the grill to serve up burgers and Lucky Dog was on hand too. Kids of all ages were treated to red and blue snoballs. The younger ones were kept busy on inflatables and everyone enjoyed live music from student band Midnight Horizon. It was a great way to start the year.

SCO Family Fest
THE GIBBS FAMILY CENTER FOR INNOVATION + DESIGN
On Saturday, October 3, 2015 the SCO hosted the
annual St. Martin’s Family Fest at City Park Carousel Gardens. The cool fall weather was perfect as Cottage, Lower, Middle and Upper School students and families took over the amusements. The Ladybug and Tilt-AWhirl were favorites, but the best part of the night was the bumper car contest between Head of School Merry Sorrells and Lower School Head Ford Dieth ’89. Mrs. Sorrells’ team was champion, but Mr. Dieth is already planning his strategy for next year.
WINNING TEAM Bart Cranford and the Cranford Equipment Company Inc. team.
On Thursday, November 5, the entire St. Martin’s community gathered to celebrate the groundbreaking of The Gibbs Family Center for Innovation + Design. The event began with a chapel service and moved on to the building site. In addition to students from all divisions, faculty, and parents, there were numerous special guests on campus. The Center for Innovation + Design will be a cutting edge facility, structured to meet the needs of the school’s design thinking program. Top: Larry Gibbs speaks of the impact of this new building. COVER STORY
GLOBAL
PERSPECTIVES St. Martin’s Episcopal School’s mission continues to be “We prepare our
students for college and for life,” but how we do that must continually evolve to meet that goal. Our Innovation + Design program is helping to better prepare our students for success through the experience of tackling real-world problems, working in collaborative teams on campus, in the community and around the world, and focusing on the process to achieve solutions. This means our students will enter college and the workplace ready to develop solutions to the problems of today and tomorrow as part of diverse teams. The new International Student Program brings another important facet to this mission by preparing our students for a truly global community. It provides both our current students and our new international students the opportunity to learn from each other, break down cultural divides, and foster understanding. It prepares them for the global workforce that awaits them. This year, our senior student, Andy Chen, who came to St. Martin’s last spring and lives with the Jeanfreau family, was joined by seven new international students from China. There are six juniors: Ophelia Li, who lives with her own family here; Sam Jin and Iris Hu, both living with Director of the International Student Program Jennifer Wang’s family; Steven Zhao and Marc Zheng, who both live with Margie Brown ’76, parent of an alum; and Jenni Li, from Zhengzhou, Henan Province, who lives with our sophomore Brianne Milioto’s family. Freshman Claire Mao lives with her aunt, Helen Hu. This fall has been a wonderful time of welcoming these new students into our family, supporting them, and enjoying all of the amazing ways they have become such a part of StM in such a short time. International Summer Camp The people of South Louisiana know about storms. So when 39 international campers and three international teachers scheduled to attend St. Martin’s first-ever international summer camp were not able to make their flights due to a major typhoon, our community banded together. The camp was quickly pushed back and our many host families were incredibly flexible to accommodate the campers.
Traveling to China In many ways, the International Student Program at St. Martin’s put down roots last March, when Head of School Merry Sorrells, Director of Admission Laurie Stewart, and Head of Upper School Michelle Scandurro travelled to China with Director of International Student Program Jennifer Wang. As Mrs. Sorrells wrote during the trip, “This trip has reinforced for us the importance of exposing each of our students to a global education. Our traveling days have illuminated the necessity of providing our students with cultural exchanges and fluency in a modern language, as essential components of fulfilling our mission: to prepare our students for the life that is their future.” The trip included stops in five cities: Beijing, Tianjin, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Hangzhou. During the trip to Hangzhou, we signed an official document confirming St. Martin’s and Yanzhou High School as Sister Schools. The administrators also met with China Project Hope and other education agencies, visited schools in each area, and met with some of our new international students’ family members. As Mrs. Sorrells recapped, “The more we saw of China, the more we understood why it is so important to our This spring, t gain insight into the en l Stud Internationa its st ho ill perspective and history of Program w na for hi C to ip tr others, and how acquiring first and faculty. Upon arrival, they spent the morning in courses such as literature, STEM, game design, and architecture, with afternoon trips to places like the French Quarter, Biloxi, City Park, and a Zephyr’s baseball game. They also took part in activities like Project Adventure, and capped off the week with a performance in the Solomon Theater with StM students and their host families. The educators were able to shadow our instructors, learning from them and exchanging ideas on teaching. The camp served as a great introduction to our community in hosting international students. Heidi Gremillion, whose family hosted three international campers, said, “The experience was fantastic. We brought them out to eat seafood and grilled steaks. We introduced them to paddle boarding, went to Rock-n-Bowl, hung out at City Park, ate snowballs, and had a BBQ with friends. We continue to communicate with the boys since they returned home to China. My son, Max, is making plans to travel to China. He plans to visit the boys and their family while there.”
Community When people talk about St. Martin’s, the words “community” and “family” are often some of the first words mentioned. The introduction of an International Student Program at St. Martin’s creates many wonderful opportunities to reinforce just what our community means and how we may strengthen and grow it even more. Our wonderful host families have opened their homes and their lives to our newest students. Margie Brown ’76’ has a long history with StM. Her late husband, Crichton Brown ’76, was also an alum, and her son Jack ‘15 is now a freshman at LSU. She is hosting both Marc and Steven and describes it as “one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. They are such wonderful young men, and I have so enjoyed being a part of their becoming Saints.” Recently, former alum and 2014 Martin de Tours recipient Cindy Phillips Schmidt ’74 and her husband Lenny invited our international students to experience a day of boating at their home in Bayou Lacombe. Our newest students have proven to be an incredible addition to the already vibrant campus. In addition to navigating new classes and cultures, they have quickly adapted to take the lead in forming new clubs and joining existing ones. The Cooking Club has created a buzz on campus from preparing refreshments for special events to selling meals at the football games. Sam and Steven are co-presidents, and Ophelia is the treasurer. A new tradition has found its way to the Van Slate Lawn in the way of the Badminton Club, led by co-presidents Andy and Marc. Many of our local students have joined for the friendly games of badminton. All of our international students are members of both clubs and of the Culture Club as well. Andy (although not eligible to compete) ran with the Cross Country team this fall. Ophelia is a cheerleader, and Marc and Sam will be joining soccer practice. Sam plans to join tennis practice this year. Iris, Jenny, and Claire sing in our Upper School Chorus, and Iris created the amazing piece of art for the cover of this issue of The Bell. It’s heartwarming to see the interaction between our local students and new international students. When the school year began, many current students made special efforts to invite the newcomers to join their clubs. They are frequently spotted in the library studying and sharing academic strengths with each other. They have also planned weekend activities, and off-campus lunches on Fridays.
HOW FACULTY AND STAFF ARE SUPPORTING THE INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS The International Student Program is a huge collective project for the Upper School, one that involves every student and teacher. Just as our new international students are learning and adapting, so are our faculty and staff. To prepare for the arrival of the new international students, the department chairs and teachers: • Attended the NAIS Global Symposium • Attended a session in which MS teacher Anastasia Nekoz shared her story of moving to the United States as a young girl, and her learning experiences as she transitioned to a new education system • Worked with TESOL Trainers, an ESL expert • Attended faculty meetings specifically dedicated to understanding and supporting the international student program The faculty is still engaged in ongoing research and discussion about best practices, including curriculum and coursework, school life, host family support, and ensuring the integrity of the transcript while providing missionappropriate support for international students. The faculty also continues to find opportunities to learn from other schools and educators how to best integrate international students into our community, such as visiting other international schools in Dallas, and attending a workshop on college admissions for international students. As we continue to understand the needs of international students and best practices, St. Martin’s has created new positions and new roles for existing faculty, such as ESL Department Chair and ESL Support, along with a dedicated course called English for International Students: American Literature. Moving to another country in high school and learning in a different language is a brave and audacious challenge for anyone. Our international students are adventurous, creative, and hardworking. They have enlivened our campus and given our faculty a new perspective.
The international students enjoying a day of boating and activities at the Bayou Lacombe home of Cindy Phillips Schmidt ’74 and Lenny Schmidt. International campers and St. Martin’s students worked together on skits they performed on the final day of camp in the Solomon Theater. The event was attended by many members of the StM community, including the campers’ host families.

MARIE LOUISE RYAN, Class of 1994
RAYMOND STEPHENS, Class of 1975
2014-2015 Fulbright U.S. Student Award Winner
Public Affairs Officer, U.S. Department of State
You received the 2014-2015 Fulbright U.S. Student Award and recently spent 9 months in Nepal to research the barriers to preserving traditional rice varieties. Can you share some of what you learned during your time there? Every day in Nepal turned into an adventure. I got hit by a taxi; I had a monkey steal my kombucha scoby; I joined honey hunters as they gathered cliff-side honey (and got attacked by the largest, most aggressive bees one can imagine). Some of the basic skills I developed included learning (albeit not very well!) to negotiate busy streets without stop lights or pedestrian crossings; learning how to work (easily) with only 8 hours a day of electricity (with half of that often occurring during the night); and learning that one deworming pill is good for an entire year. On a more fundamental level, I learned that the more I opened up to Nepalese people and their fascinating cultures and the more I let go of my own protective carapace, the richer and more meaningful my experiences became. In Nepal people look out for and take care of each other to a much greater extent than anywhere else I have lived; I came to greatly appreciate the empathy and openness of the Nepalese and I now strive to incorporate more of this into my life.
Of course, the earthquake and ensuing aftershocks altered my time in and impressions of Nepal. This experience taught me how important community becomes in times of disaster and trauma. Sharing resources and emotions with friends, neighbors, and strangers became an integral part of my life in Nepal. How I communicate my experiences in the context of the earthquake and ensuing aftershocks continues to challenge me on a daily basis. I cannot separate what I learned—and in fact continue to learn—from my 9 months in Nepal from this experience. What were you working on prior to your trip to Nepal? I was—and am—currently pursuing an MS in sustainable agriculture as well as an MCRP in community and regional planning at Iowa State University. My research focuses on traditional rice varieties in Nepal’s mid-hills and the various barriers that prevent these varieties from reaching the market place. This research situates itself in the broader field of agrobiodiversity conservation and the need for conserving traditional agricultural varieties in the face of increased globalization, industrialization, and climate change. What led you into your field of study? An obsession with food and farming. Naturally, part of my passion for food stems from growing up in New Orleans. I like to draw parallels between New Orleans’ unique culinary traditions and the traditional

agricultural varieties grown by subsistence farmers—both the varieties and the food are unique to a specific place, and both are worth conserving. At some point I also developed a passion for potatoes. The multiple textures, tastes, and purposes of the thousands of varieties fascinate me. This small potato obsession transformed into a greater interest in agricultural biodiversity conservation and the possibility of using markets as a conservation tool. Once I realized the futility of taming my food and agriculture passion, I decided to return to school. What benefit comes from studying and interacting with other cultures? Exposure to other peoples and their cultures challenges our understanding of the world around us. We increase our ability to adapt while learning to see situations and problems through a different lens. Other cultures also offer the opportunity to better understand our own culture. Most importantly, other cultures can be both interesting and exciting—why wouldn’t you want to learn about and from them?!

We loved the food in Ghana because it is very similar to New Orleans cuisine. Okra stew in Ghana is the same as New Orleans gumbo and jollof rice is like dirty rice! I liked Kenya because we spent a lot of time camping in the bush. During one weekend trip, I administered CPR to a wild rhino, but sadly, we were not able to save the beautiful creature.

RAYMOND STEPHENS continued from page 23 much we all have in common, regardless of where we live or the languages we speak. Too often, we focus on cultural differences rather than similarities, particularly when discussing religion. I met a Pakistani teacher who went to the U.S. for an exchange program and returned to Pakistan with a new-found appreciation for what the idea of family means to Americans. The teacher told me that when she was growing up in Pakistan, she was taught that Americans do not respect or appreciate family, but she was in a restaurant in Pennsylvania on Father’s Day and saw multiple generations happily interacting in a relaxed environment. Her experience in the U.S. blatantly contradicted her preconceived ideas of America, and she realized that Pakistanis and Americans actually have more in common than she thought. What part did St. Martin’s play in preparing you for an increasingly connected world? I think that most of the academic and professional success I have enjoyed in my life is due to what I learned at StM. Most importantly, in Mrs. Smith’s 7th grade English class, I learned how to write, which is an essential skill for a diplomat, and to think critically. I have visited schools in many countries where students learn by rote. Even at the university level, students memorize lectures and pass exams by repeating exactly what the teacher said. They are discouraged from questioning or discussing the subject. Many students cannot assess information and draw their own conclusions, but critical thinking is so important to any person’s intellectual development and is fundamental to societal growth and advancement. In short, I benefited from the StM environment that encourages students to develop their own conclusions based on individual research and assessment of the world around them. What are some of your fondest memories of St. Martin’s? The thought of my Senior year Homecoming dance still makes me smile forty-one years later. I thought, at the time, we were all so grown up and sophisticated with our big hair and formal attire, but in hindsight, I realize how terribly young and innocent we were. Nonetheless, it was a special moment in my years at StM and in my passage through young adulthood. Now that you have moved on from Pakistan, what’s next for you? I will continue my work to counter violent extremism in the Horn of Africa and to try and prevent bad guys from doing bad things to Americans. I am now working as the first Public Affairs Officer in the new United States Mission to Somalia, which was inaugurated on September 8, 2015. The U.S. Mission to Somalia reflects a continuation of American efforts to normalize U.S.-Somalia bilateral relations and is the next step towards reestablishing a full U.S. diplomatic presence in Somalia.

What part did St. Martin’s play in preparing you for an increasingly connected world? The world didn’t seem nearly so connected in 1994! That said, I had classes that fostered a passion for other cultures. Humanities with Doc Mooney and Ms. Wells inspired an interest in the cultures and literatures of less developed countries. St. Martin’s also gave me a foundation in French that later led me to work in France for four years. I don’t think I realized this in high school but a large part of where I am now is from this early exposure to places very different from New Orleans and the U.S. While the student body lacked diversity in the early 90s, some classes did a good job of exposing us to other cultures and settings. StM also taught me how to write effectively and I can’t overstate how much I value this communication skill.
2015 Alumni Brown Bag Lunch The Alumni Association held the annual Brown Bag Lunch
on Thursday, October 29 to celebrate alumni who are continuing the StM legacy by sending their own children to St. Martin’s. Many were out on this beautiful day to have a good time. We even had some alumni aunts and grandmothers. It was wonderful to see all the students playing on the Van Slate Lawn and enjoying time with their families.
What are some of your fondest memories of St. Martin’s? I truly enjoyed the instructors and think about how my classes there have impacted the trajectory of my education—both in the classroom and in other experiences. I appreciate the nurturing environment found in the classroom and the way instructors often challenged us to think beyond our own everyday experiences and expectations. Once you complete your master’s degree, what’s next? I am contemplating continuing on toward a PhD, assuming I can stand a few more years of higher education. I also have a keen interest in international agricultural development and increasing the livelihoods of subsistence farmers in the face of climate change; this could draw me back into the world of employment.

St. Martin’s Remembers
Member of the Legacy Societies of St. Martin’s John Peter Labouisse III ’60 was a remarkable man: a war veteran with 31 years of military service; a highly skilled financial investor with 45 years in the industry; and a member of dozens of civic, social, and Carnival organizations. And yet, Pete always remained true to St. Martin’s, a proud alum and great champion for our school who will be deeply missed. As a student, Pete was active in sports, student council, and religious life. Classmates saw him as a fine, loving person, and many were grateful to have had the time to visit with him during their recent class reunion. Throughout his 55-year history with StM as an alum, parent, and grandparent, Pete remained extremely active in the life of the school. As a member of the Board of Trustees, the Alumni Board, and the Board of Visitors, his leadership abilities, institutional knowledge, and dedication for St. Martin’s were invaluable. His son, Charles Janvier Labouisse, graduated from St. Martin’s in 1995. His daughter, Mary-Francis “Muffin” Labouisse Adriance, is a member of the class of 1996 and a current faculty member. Two grandsons are Lower School students, Sawyer ’24 and Will ’26. Through his children and grandchildren, Pete’s legacy lives on…but what many may not know is that he was also a member of St. Martin’s Legacy Societies. Pete made the ultimate gift to St. Martin’s, a gift through which he will be memorialized and a gift for which the school will remain forever grateful. Our heartfelt thanks to Pete for his dedication and loyalty to St. Martin’s.

SCATTERED FACULTY
Pedro Perez Pedro was a beloved Upper School Spanish teacher during his time at StM, beginning in the late 1970s and continuing into the new millennium. The yearbook was dedicated to him in 1977 and again in 1991. Pedro retired in June of 2007 and moved to The Woodlands, Texas in December of that year. The Woodlands is a small city (pop. 110,000) about an hour north of Houston. It has numerous parks and walking trails wooded with pine, pecan, and other trees. Pedro enjoys spending time in nature and working in the yard. He reports that deer are frequently seen but the downside is that they eat his flowers. He attends classes for senior adults at a nearby community college, The Lone Star College. He and his wife, Alina,
ALUMNI NEWS are taking several American History classes this semester: Andrew Jackson, John Adams, Secrets of WWII, and Geology of Three National Parks. They are also enjoying a class about medieval cities. On Sundays they attend St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church. Once a month Pedro goes to lunch with other retired men in the neighborhood, and on a separate day his wife goes to lunch with the retired ladies. Pedro and Alina have relatives in The Woodlands and see them often to celebrate birthdays, anniversary, lunches, etc. The downside is the summers are even hotter than in New Orleans, and the winters somewhat colder. Pedro says, “Overall we enjoy life here, but New Orleans is part of who we are.” He adds, “New Orleans and StM are always in my mind.”

1954 Karen Scott Sra. Scott was a Middle School Spanish teacher for 26 years before retiring in 2006. Both her daughters (Lisa ’92 and Amy ’94) also attended St. Martin’s. November brings back StM memories for Sra. Scott. She remembers fondly each November 1st for the annual Day of the Dead celebration, with the library festooned with papel picado (paper cutouts) paper flowers, other student made crafts, and homemade Mexican food that was outstanding. When teaching Sra. Scott enjoyed seeing students’ progress, particularly in spoken Spanish. At the middle school age they had few inhibitions and would try anything. Life after StM has meant re-writing rather than retiring for Karen. Her endeavors have been challenging, fun and interesting. After getting certified in Command Spanish®, she taught non-grammar based occupational Spanish courses to managers at a shipyard, a hotel, a hospital, and even a casino. She currently does contract work as a SpanishEnglish interpreter for Latino workers who are injured on the job, interpreting for them at medical appointments and physical therapy. This has been a reminder that one small thing can change your life and health is paramount.
Sra. Scott also has an affinity for radio stations. For 9 years she has been a weekly volunteer reader on WRBH, radio station for the blind and print handicapped. Many sighted people also tune in to WRBH to hear, among other things, the newspaper, magazines and novels read on air. She also volunteers at WWOZ, “the best music station in the universe,” during pledge drives. It adds to the fun when live entertainment comes to the studio. She’s also in their Hospitality Tent at Jazz Fest, surrounded by fun, food and music.

After StM Sra. Scott decided to get healthier and discovered firsthand the aches and the joy of working out in fitness classes. She eventually became a certified yoga instructor and teaches at her own studio, Yoga Diva Harahan, as well as for Elmwood Fitness Center at Heritage Plaza in Metairie. Her studio is near StM on Citrus Blvd. She bases her classes on the belief that anyone, regardless of age or condition, can practice TriYoga, a flowing form of hatha yoga.
