EMRS to strike MERVYN KRISHNA

Spokesperson for EMRS KZN Sifiso Dlamini is seen addressing personnel at the meeting

MRS staff on the North Coast will converge in KwaDukuza and take to the streets tomorrow (Friday) again, demanding answers from the Department of Health regarding their working conditions. This was announced at an arbitration meeting last Tuesday at the SADTU Park in KwaDukuza. More than 500 EMRS personnel from across the province attended. Spokesperson for the EMRS staff, Sifiso Dlamini questioned why EMRS personnel have to work an extra 13 unpaid hours before they can claim overtime. “While personnel are obliged to work 160 hours a month and anything over this should be overtime, staff are forced to work 173 hours a month before being eligible for overtime. “Wehandedourgrievancesoverto

the department in December last year, but they failed to resolve our grievances,” said Dlamini. However, the Public Sectoral Bargaining Council commissioner, Bheki Khumalo resolved that both parties have to come to an agreement because EMRS is an essential service. “The department and EMRS personnel will have to meet within 30 days and discuss their grievances,” said Bheki.

Toddlers killed in the vehicle crash WEEKLY REPORTER TWO toddlers and an adult were killed after a taxi and two cars collided on the M4 between Umhlanga and Umdloti on Monday. According to Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha, paramedics arrived at the scene and found a car down an embankment on the north bound lane with the driver still trapped inside. “A taxi was found down an embankment on the south bound lane with the right side of the taxi ripped off. The third vehicle was found facing north on the south bound lane.” He said that after the injured were assessed they found that an adult man and a toddler, aged two had tragically died. “Aone-year-oldchildwasinacriticalcondition and paramedics worked fervently to resuscitate her. Tragically, she died on scene due to the extensive injuries that she sustained.” Botha stated that a critically injured man was airlifted to the Nkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital while the critically injured driver from one of the cars was transported by ambulance to a Netcare hospital in Durban.

‘A one-year-old child was in a critical condition and paramedics worked fervently to resuscitate her. Tragically she died on scene due to the extensive injuries that she sustained.’ “Two other seriously injured people were stabilised on scene and then transported to a local hospital for the care they required.” Exact details of the crash are under investigation.

He said the department has agreed to sit with the employees and resolve the issue. Dlamini asked the community to bear with them during the one-day strike on Friday. ‘The community needs to know, this is our only way of applying pressure on the department, so they can react,” said Dlamini.

Tongaat school opens new hall WEEKLY REPORTER

T

ONGAAT Secondary School officially opened their new school hall last Friday in grand style with their major sponsors, the Tongaat High Ex-Students Club, being commended for their magnanimous gesture. Special guest, Department of Education CES forschoolsinfrastructureandplanning,DrDeena Moodliar praised the ex-students. “I am inspired by the efforts of the Tongaat High Ex-Students Club for having contributed R500 000 towards the completion of this beautiful conference and hall facility,” said Moodliar. “Tongaat has always been very progressive initsthinkingandcommunityactivism, andthis project bears testament to the spirit of volunteerism, which is the hallmark of this town,” he added. Tongaat Secondary principal Rajen Singh said that when university and college personnel visited the school to address matriculants, they felt inadequate as all the pupils could not be ac-

commodated in one venue. “This meant that many of them lost out on some important motivational information. When we approached the ex-students for help they responded very positively and took on this major project.” In his address, the Billy Nair Circuit manager Selvan Chetty said: “I echo the sentiments and appreciation to the ex-students of Tongaat Secondary, and must add that I have never seen such a dynamic band of retired ex-students who have such a passion and drive for their alma mater.” Speaking on behalf of the ex-students, vicechairperson Kay Charles expressed joy and fulfilment on completing “what can only be described as a living legacy project” which they hoped will serve both the school and the community. Compliments were also paid to project co-ordinatorfromtheschoolgoverningbody,Preggie Naidoo, who ensured that workmanship and the quality of materials were of the highest standard. He also ensured that the project was completed timeously in order for the

Vadi Rungan and DR Naidoo unveiling the plaque to launch the Tongaat High ExStudents Club Hall matriculants to write their trial examinations in the new school hall. Who knows what goes on

AS a city councillor, one would hope that I can influence what goes on in our city. This is not so. Suggestions made to officials and ourpoliticalleadershipseemtofallon deaf ears. Maybe I am out of step. Let me ask that we use the 'court of Public Opinion', the press. Some months ago I raised the idea that the phalanx of flag poles around eThekwini be used for advertising forthcoming events in the city. I did this by email to some officials, and by

raisingitinoneofourcouncilcommittee meetings. It'squitesimplereally, andmyidea is not new. Before the soccer World Cup, wehadtheflagsofallthenations taking part, flying on our flag pole clusters on major routes into the city. I proposed that we use these same flag poles to "publicise" all other events hosted by the city. So for example, with Top Gear - all the motor and fuel companies could fly their brand flags. For the Wine Week - all the wineries could put up their flags. When

Suggestions made to officials and our political leadership seem to fall on deaf ears Manchester City were here - there was another opportunity missed. The SPAR Ladies Race...the list is endless. My suggestion has job creation and economic benefits, as we would charge for the advertising. Plus it makes the city look more welcoming, rather than these sterile poles on the

freeways. We are, after all, a tourist city. Goodness gracious, we have joined the beaches Blue Flag scheme - why can't we "flag" our other assets. What do other residents of the city think? Geoff Pullan

fairs and intricate family relations, it is alarming as to how many people simply refuse to make provision for the inevitable. The fear of accepting one’s mortality may be the reason so many simply avoid the issue all together, believing that there will always be time to make a will. Often, that time never comes. As I tell my clients, making a will does not mean you are going to ‘drop dead’. It simply means that you have taken the responsibility to carefully consider the outcome of your financial affairs after you die. There is also a misconception where people think that they ‘don’t have enough assets that warrant making a will, or that everything will

pass on to their spouses or children anyway’. This is often not the case. As a common problematic example, parents often desire that their family home passes to their children in equal shares. However, the practical reality is that many of the children (if adults) have moved away from the family home, having acquired their own homes leaving a sibling still living on the property. Disagreements often arise regarding rates, rentals and the property maintenance costs, which result in the family home being sold, so that all the beneficiaries get their due share. According to the National Department of Health figures (The Herald, 12 June 2012) close to 78 000 legal abortions were performed in South Africa in 2011, that's about 6 per 1000 women. Illegal abortions, they estimate, was 38 per 1000 women, this gives us a figure of 450 000 abortions per annum, the total is therefore close to 528 000 abortions per year, which means that 1447 abortions are done every day. The AIDS deaths have been calculated at 850 per day, from this figures it is evident that abortion kills nearly twice as many people as HIV/AIDS. In total this means that between Abortion and AIDS it adds up to 840 000 deaths per year in South Africa. Drawing up a will gives you peace of mind and is arguably the most selfless and responsible act you can take to provide for your loved ones. Avoid the temptation to procrastinate and put off this issue further. People are advised to consult with an attorney who will explain all the relevant provisions that would be applicable to them to ensure that their will is best drafted.

JEHOVAH’S Witnesses in the North Coast, includ ing Verulam and Tongaat, will be attending their upcoming District Convention in September. This year’s convention theme is “God's Word Is Truth!” which commenced in the United States in May and will continue worldwide until the end of December. It is estimated that more than 7 000 delegates will attend the Englishlanguage convention at Growthpoint Kings Park Stadium from 6 to 8 Sep tember and that a further 13 000 will attend the Zululanguage convention from 13 to 15 Septem ber for the Biblebased programmes. JR Brown, spokesman for the Witnesses, said the convention theme this year is significant be cause it underscores a core family value for Jeho vah's Witnesses. “Witness families embrace the Bible as the most trustworthy guide and source of advice in these troubled times. And we feel that the public will likewise benefit from and enjoy the varied and practical programme.” He said some of the highlights is the 'intriguing' talk entitled “What Is Truth” and will examine why we can trust God's Word, the Bible. Two dramatic plays will be presented that will bring Bible stories and their lessons to life.

The first 500 10km participants will receive t-shirts whilst all finishers will receive goody bags. All 5km fun run finishers will receive goody bags and medals. For the first time, event organisers have also included age category prizes for both the run and walk. The 10km race will offer open prizes, 35+, 40+ 50+ and 60+ runners and walkers will be able to receive category cash prizes making it a must run/walk
