The Umgeni system provided about 350 million cubic metres of water a year, augmented by just less than 50 million cubic metres from the Spring Grove Dam. ART of the North Coast and eThekwini could run short of water in just two years if rainfall trends continue and nothing is done to augment supplies. KwaZulu-Natal’s chief director of water and sanitation Ashley Starkey said this at a presentation at the launch of National Water Week last week at an Umgeni Water-hosted event at Hazelmere Dam in Verulam. The Smithfield Dam augmentation scheme in 2029 will further strengthenwatersecurityintheprovince. Starkey urged people to use water sparingly. “Last year at this time, the Hazelmere Dam was sitting at 97% capacity, but is now at 46%. That is half of its capacity. Umgeni Water’s chief executive Cyril Gamede said the organisation had a short- and a long-term view, extending to 2030. “We will plan long-term water resources adequacy; establish a water demand management business unit to address high water loss, and proactively plan and build new bulk regional water schemes while continuously investing in operations and maintenance.”

HE plight of 40 Shakashead residents who live in leakyroofed tin houses, and with no stable water supply, has been taken up by local business owner Tamsyn Ferreira, the managing director of Alifurn Outdoor furniture manufacturers. Ferreira(thefirstfinalistintheMargaret Hirsch Woman In Business Achiever of the Year Awards programme) would like to put together a programme that would involve other business partners in the Shakashead Industrial Park coming forward to offer assistance through a variety of fund raising drives.

Ferreira recently met with the KwaDukuzadeputymayorDollyGovender, a member of the KwaDukuza disaster management team Tarzan Naicker and two representatives from Sembcorp/Siza Water Innocent Mangue and Roshan Chalithan to discuss the situation and put forward a plan of action. Govender said she was extremely impressed with Ferreira’s initiative and said that she was, not only helping to make the lives of the residents more comfortable, but also had a programme in motion whereby she was employing disabled members of the community (Ferreira employs two deaf staff members in her factory). “We are extremely proud of people

Nurse raises awareness on TB

HAKASKRAAL Primary School has a lot to be proud of as years of sacrifice and hard work finally paid off. At the end of 2014, heads of the school undertook to build five classrooms with funds from their own coffers. With the help of Act for Children and Soul City, this dream finally materialised. The acting principal Mr P. Govender said that he owes his gratitude to a band of dedicated teachers, a very supportive school governing body and the community. The project which costs almost R1 million was successfully completed and occupied by pupils in 2015. At a glamorous opening held last week, high ranking officials from the Department of Education at all levels: provincial, district and circuit graced the function together with the KZN manager of Soul City. Management, staff and pupils said that it was indeed a proud moment for the school. It is not an everyday event that public schools embark on such undertakings.

She said that she has since introduced other health services such as checking vi tals, taking blood samples for CD4 count, screening for sexually transmitted diseas es, family planning, treating of minor ail ments as well stab wounds and testing sputum for TB. “People in and around the taxi rank can come in as they please,” said sister Naidoo adding that she is available at the clinic from 9am until 4pm daily. “It is good that we have a clinic here in the rank,” said Ntombenhle Mncwango who runs a stall at the rank. She urged the public to make use of this facility as all the services are provided for free.

NOTHANDO Mpanza placed the onus on herself to inform local pupils about the plethora of opportunities available for them after their secondary schooling. She was able to achieve this by hosting the KwaDukuza Municipality (KDM) FET Expo on 19 and 20 March, at the KwaDukuza Town Hall. The event was attended by Stanger High, ML Sultan, Stanger Secondary, Stanger South, Glenhills Secondary and Tshelenkosi Secondary Schools grade 12 pupils who were given the opportunity to interact with various institutes of higher education and other organisations. Some of the colleges that availed themselves were Boston, PC Training and Business College, The Graduate Academy KZN North Coast and Mfolozi TVET. Representatives from the Department of Correctional Services, traffic and from the banking industry were also present to tell the pupils about career prospects in their respective fields as well as the bursaries and financing opportunities they offer. Mpanza said that she felt compelled to host an expo of this nature when she realised that overcrowding in most South African universities meant that for some, higher education would be an unfulfilled dream and due to a lack of knowledge about other opportunities they end up at home and jobless. “It is our duty as the youth of this country to assist in the development of others in any way we can,” she said. The other problem she noted was that pupils generally fail to achieve grades to meet the stringent university requirements. “Pupils do not obtain enough qualifying points to get into university. That is why I saw it fit to host an event that will expose them to various options that they may have not known about,” she said. The lack of finances is also a major hurdle for many individuals who have the desire to study further making such an informative event an invaluable asset to those pupils who face such challenges. “This event serves as yet another way of bridging the education gap between pupils from rural and urban areas and it gives hope to those who come from financially disadvantaged homes,” she said. The expo was a thrilling two days of information sharing made energetic by enthusiastic pupils who, during intervals, entertained their peers with back breaking dance moves as the hired deejay spun records of the latest hits. Mpanza said the municipality sponsored the venue and the music and she is grateful for this. “The KwaDukuza Municipality helped me in so many ways in making this day a success, which showed me that our municipality really cares and really is all about service delivery,” she said. She added that the event was her first step infollowinginthefootstepsofhergrandfather, General Gizenga Mpanza. “I come from a family that is always looking for ways to help other people. My grandfather General Gizenga Mpanza was very instrumentalinmouldingthiscountryandthis towntowhatitistodaysoitismyresponsibility that I carry on his legacy and walk boldly in his footsteps by doing community work,” she said. “They advised us about further education and financial aid,” said Bhekumuzi Hamilton Khumalo, a grade 12 pupil at ML Sultan, who continued, “and yes, I feel like we did benefit,” he said. The success of last week’s expo has prompted Mpanza to host them in other areas for the benefit of pupils there. “I have decided to move on to other areas and host such events just to reach out to as many pupils as possible,” she said. For more information on upcoming career expos that the young ‘social activist’ will be hosting in future contact her on 076 760 8413 or send her an email at Thandoeh@gmail.com

OPINION

‘We need answers’ A

LL South Africans are aware that false advertising, fraud and corruption are the order of the day, especially when it comes to food and drink used everyday by most households. No firm or organisation responsible for supplying our local supermarkets are prepared to state whether the product has been subjected to irradiation, hormones for growth, the pesticides used during the growing period, and so on, to a never ending list. Recently I have been surprised to learn how many consumers have queried milk products – people from Johannesburg to Bloemfontein to Margate.

My curiosity peaked and I visited the three bigger supermarkets on the South Coast to inspect the fresh milk shelves. This visit resulted in discovering there are only four name brands stocked and these are Clover, Crystal Valley, Orange Grove and Pick ‘n Pay. The fresh milk products are full cream milk, two percent low fat milk, one percent low fat milk, low fat milk and fat free milk. I have personally lived on small holdings for many years and have kept my own cows, chickens, pigs and sheep and have grown a lot of the abovefoodasalsomyownvegetables and fruit, although not being an expert in any of the above, one acquires

a certain working knowledge. Would the producers (maybe this is the wrong word as mainly cows, goats and coconut’s produce milk), kindly explain the difference in the aboveproducts, thepricedifferentiation and why full cream milk does not appear to have any cream. As is known by most people, cream, being lighter than the milk, floats to the top. How many consumers who support the supermarkets have seen any cream in any of the fresh milk containers? The reply to the above is eagerly awaited by many thousands of consumers. Ian S. Kalil

Political meddling is destroying the SABC CONGRESS of the People (COPE) condemns, inthestrongestpossibleterms, the hijacking of the SABC by the ruling party in order, as many people are suggesting, to make it ostensibly into a propaganda machine. The Minister of Communications, similarly, is becoming the unabashed Minister of Propaganda. The minister is the political head of the public broadcaster. She needs to ensure compliance with its mandate. By all appearance, she is doing the

opposite. Together with chief executive officer, whose suspension the Public Protector ordered, the minister is using strong-arm tactics to achieve party political objectives. This is completely unacceptable to COPE. Ifthereisanytruthinnewspaperreports quoting her as saying that she could not act against COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng because “Baba loved him so much”,orwordstothateffect, wesurely have a constitutional crisis on our hands.

Anyway, a lot is happening every day confirming our fear of the ruling party tightening its grip on the SABC. The SABC is no longer an authentic public broadcaster, but increasingly a propaganda machine for the ruling party. We believe that in order to restore the credibility of the SABC, it is imperative for political meddling in management or its financial matters or its editorial interference to end immediately. COPEcallsuponcivilsocietyorganisations such as the SAVE OUR SABC coalition and others to raise their voices against this unacceptable situation within the SABC. Things have come to a sorry pass and the time for all of us to stand up and be counted is now! Dennis Bloem Write to the Editor Email: stangerweek lynews@gmail.com or fax: 032 552 3985. >> Celebrating Human Rights month WEEKLY REPORTER

T

HE dusty pathways, blazing heat and ridged roads did not deter representatives from Boston City Campus and Business College Stanger and the Department of Justice when they embarked on the journey to Harry Bodasing Primary School, L Bodasing Primary School and ML Sultan Kranskloof Primary last Tuesday. In commemoration of Human Rights month, branch manager of BostonStangerAnnieWilsondecided to donate two entertainment combos

out to local schools

to each of the three disadvantaged schools. The schools are all ‘no-fee’ schools and are in a poor state after being vandalised, with one school having its doors, window frames and even the electricity boxes stolen. Wilson said: “It is a very sad day when unthinking people willingly derail the education and advancement of their own children. “What example are they setting and how much damage are they causing? Do they not want better lives for their children who will be the next generation of leaders, workers and artisans? Nelson Mandela himself

said that ‘Education is the strongest weapon we can use to change the word’. “We should all do what we can to advance our youth education, through any means, big or small.” As part of the handover presentations, Dees Subraylu of the DepartmentofJusticeremindedthepupilsof thetrueessenceofHumanRightsDay. Kishore Bodasing, principal of Harry Bodasing Primary School, thanked Boston Stanger for the donation saying: “It is indeed gratifying to know that there are people like yourself who take cognisance of the needs

of the less fortunate and are so willing tolendahelpinghand.Yourgenerosity is deeply appreciated and has most certainly brought some measure of joy into the hearts of our dear children.” Nirvana Naidoo of Boston Stanger

officially handed over the six television sets and VCRs to the respective school principals after a brief talk. The principals from L Bodasing and ML Sultan Kranskloof were also very grateful to Boston Stanger for their generous donation.

Tongaat Eye Centre

Acupuncture treats chronic back and leg pain and numbness

GLAUCOMA is a disease in which the optic nerve is damaged by high pressure inside the eye. Anyone can have glaucoma and is most common after the age of 40. It sometimes is hereditary, so family members of glaucoma patients should be examined. Vision loss as a result of glaucoma cannot be re covered, but early diagnosis and treatment can pre vent further vision loss. Usually no symptoms are present, so it can only be diagnosed by a full examination. How is glaucoma detected? Tongaat Eye Centre is fully equipped to do a thorough screening and it is as follows: 1. Dilated fundus examination 2. Visual Fields Test 3. OCT high resolution scan of optic nerve and retina. 4. Tonometry to measure the Intraocular pres sure in the eye. Once the diagnosis is made, the primary treat ment is drops to reduce the intraocular pressure. Ifvisionlossoccursevenafterregularuseofdrops, laser treatment or surgery may be required.

ACK pain is a common problem these days, affecting people of all age groups. Back pain has many different forms like upper, lower and middle pain. Causes of back pain Backmusclesmaygetstraineddue to incorrect posture while standing sleeping or sitting for long periods, excessivebodyweight, repetitive bending or lifting of heavy objects. Slipped disc is another condition which is responsible for back pain. This happens when the cartilage disc of the vertebrae wear out and press any nerve root. If the sciatica nerve root, located at the lower spine region gets pressed then it leads to chronic lower back pain that often gets extended to the legs and is accompanied by numbness. Elderly people suffer from

chronic back pain due to osteoarthritis affecting the spine, chronic back pain may get triggered by stress and anxiety. The involvement of emotional

stress causes disc degeneration or herniation. Prolonged emotional stress creates a sympathetic dominant state in autonomic nervous system and leads to decreased blood flow to most of the organs, muscles and peripheral tissues. When blood flow to the lumber muscles is decreased, the muscles become tight, loose flexibility and are easily fatigued. Treatment with acupuncture Acupuncture enhances blood circulation especially in the area that there is pain or discomfort. When

circulation in the tissue improves, muscle relaxation occurs and immediate pain reduction occurs in many cases. In some other cases, however, when circulation improves, the painintheaffectedareaintensifies and is then followed by repair of tissue and muscle relaxation. Proper circulation in the tissue is important not only for blood to nourish the tissue but also in enhancing the elimination of muscle fatigue and pain causing substances(eg.lacticacid)thusresultingin healthy tissue. Acupuncture, cupping therapy and therapeutic massage offers great relief for your back pain. If other therapy has failed then may be its time you tried acupuncture. Wecanhelpyouleadapain-free life naturally without any side-effects. Mrs Kuppamah Manikam

How little we knew that morning what sorrow the day would bring. A golden heart stopped beating, hardworking hands now rest. For each and everyone of us you always did your best. No farewell words were spoken, we never said goodbye. You were gone before we knew, only God knows the reason why. You will always be a part of us until we meet again. You and your family are invited to the 15th and 16th Day Memorial Ceremony of the late Kuppamah Manikam on Saturday, 28th March 2015 & Sunday, 29 March 2015, at the family residence in Glendale, supper will be served from 6pm to 7pm. Please accept this as a personal invitation. Sadly missed by your loving husband Kalie Manikam, children: 5 sons, 1 daughter, 4 daughters-in-law, 5 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild and a host of family and friends.

Called to Rest: 7 June 2014 A thousand times we needed you, a thousand times we cried, if love alone could have saved you, you never would have died. On a cold winters night a heart of gold stopped beating, little did we know that you and God had a meeting. God broke our hearts to prove he only takes the best. We know now that you are in his arms and will rest. Remembering all the good times and trying not to be sad, but saying goodbye hurt really bad. We will always remember what an incredible husband and a wonderful dad you were. Till we meet again, we know you are watching over us as if you are here. We miss, love and will treasure every moment spent with you! You and your family are kindly invited to the Yearly Memorial Service of the late Kanniappa Savirimuthu (Kay) Date: Sunday, 29 March 2015 Time: 11:00 am Venue: 201 Capricon Road, Darnall Sadly missed by wife Molly, children Kessie, Suren, Glenda, Shreen and Yogan, grandchildren Someshnee, Keshlin, Ravolin, Yorisha, Yovania, Keiden and Mandy and great grandchild Paisely and a host of family and friends.

T

HE 2014 European Car of the Year is now available in South Africa with the launch by Peugeot SA of the new 308 hatchback “the brand’s most advanced hatch back to date”. Designed around Peugeot’s newgeneration Efficient Modular Platform 2 (EMP2), the automaker says, the new 308 combines compact dimensions and a sub stantially reduced kerb mass with an ad vanced, highefficiency, drivetrain to deliver exceptional dynamics and frugal fuel con sumption. The interior is said to reflect the ad vanced nature of the 308 while paying close attention to design detail, comfort and tac tile quality with a deeply recessed, highly visible, instrument pod and a large, fullcol our touchscreen. The multifunction steer ingwheel carries key functions and fea tures. The car follows the design trend intro duced by the 208 and 2008, Peugeot says, with an ergonomic layout that combines a small steering wheel with an elevated in strument pod. “The car is more compact than its prede cessor,”Peugeotsays,“butefficientpackag ing and intelligent design have created a roomy cabin with spacious accommoda tion. Smart finishes, including textured sur faces, metallic accents and highgloss in serts, establish an upmarket ambience.” The 60/40split rear bench seat can be partly or fully folded to increase cargo space and the car comes with a fivestar Euro NCAP rating.

There are two models. The Peugeot 308 1.2 PureTech Active has a threecylinder, quadvalve, turbocharged 1.2 PureTech eTHP 110 engine capable of 81kW at 5500rpm and 205Nm of torque from 1500rpm. A fivespeed manual gearbox is standard. The 1.2 PureTech eTHP 130 engine in the 308 GT Line, however, is tuned for 96kW at 5500rpm and 240Nm from 1750rpm. The GT Line drives through a sixspeed manual gearbox. The differences between the Active and GT Line models include exterior styling de tails and interior trim and equipment levels. The GT Line gains diode headlights, a differ ent grille and twin, narrowaperture, tail pipes and rides on a larger alloy wheel/tyre combination. Each model, Peugeot says, has a com prehensive array of standard equipment. The GT Line gains an extended features list with enhanced trim levels; the 25cm touch screen display is on each variant. Francis Harnie, managing director of Peugeot South Africa, says: “The arrival of the newgeneration Peugeot 308 in South Africa is a quantum leap for the brand in the

Caminamix injects R5 000 into volleyball Little Mo hamed Hoosen and Ku maren Mu niappan of Caminamix Services presents a cheque of R5 000 to KwaDuku za Volley ball Asso ciation tourna ment di rector Revy Har ryprasad. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

WEEKLY REPORTER CAMINAMIX Services has given KwaDukuza Volleyball Association (KDVA) a huge boost with the announcement of a whopping R5 000 sponsorship. CEO of Caminamix Services, Yaseen Ebrahim said: “We have been impressed with the administration of volleyball in our town and did not hesitate to inject R5 000 towards the development of the sport.” President of KDVA, Isaac Abraham expressed his sincere thanks to Yaseen Ebrahim (CEO of Caminamix Services) for his generous sponsorship. R3 000 has been injected into the Easter Knockout Cup which gets underway on Thursday, March 26 and R2 000 will be ploughed into the Corporate League K.O. Cup which is scheduled to take place on April 22. Eight teams comprising of Grove End, KSST, Randsons, Warriors Sport, Frendz, Cool Leaders, Manor Old Boys and Darnall United will contest the Easter K.O. Cup. At the draws held on Thursday at The Quartz Cenference Centre, Aslam Randeree (coach of the Randsons outfit) was grinning from ear to ear after his side were drawn against rookies Cool Leaders in the first round of the competition. Randsons are expected to sail into the next round with a semi-final clash against Warriors Sport, who are hardly expected to work up a sweat in their match against Manor Old Boys. Randsons and Warriors Sport have produced some entertaining, mouthwatering action throughout 2014 and are expected to whet the appetites of volleyball enthusiasts in their anticipated semi-final clash. In the bottom half of the draws, newly crowned KDVA Top 8 champions, Grove End and runners-up KSSTwillmeetinthe opening round of the Easter K.O. Cup. After their lack-lustre performance in the final of the Top 8 K.O. Cup, KSST will be

hoping to get their act together in the hope of returning to winning ways. However, Grove End are strongly fancied to sweep aside KSST and secure a semi-final clash against the winner of the Darnall United/Frendz clash. Darnall will be hoping to avenge their defeat at the hands of Frendz in the Top 8 K.O. Cup and will be relying on the lanky Malcolm Reddy and Nishendra “Niknaks” Dhaver to guide them into the semi’s. Prize-money will be awarded to the top four finishers. The winner will walk away R1 500 richer with the runner-up set to collect R1 000. The third and fourth teams will pocket R700 and R500 respectively. The semi-finals is scheduled for 2 April with the final scheduled to take place on 9 April. KDVA will kick-off their league programme on 16 April with the Ralph Reuben memorial K.O. Cup scheduled to take place in June.

Ilembe Cricket Union booked their place in the semifinals of the KZN Challenge League Twenty20 K.O. Cup.

WEEKLY REPORTER

I

LEMBE Cricket Union and Dawnheights Cricket Club have done KwaDukuza proud after securing a place in the semi-final of the KwaZulu Natal Challenge League Twenty-20 Knockout Cup. The Ilembe-outfit kicked off their Pool D campaign with a stunning 7-wicketsvictoryagainstthevirtually “lily-white” Amanzimtoti outfit on home soil before locking horns with nemesis, Verulam in a tricky away fixture a fortnight ago. Verulam were left licking their wounds after slumping to a humiliating 9-run defeat in their own backyard (Verulam Recreation Ground). With a semi-final spot in sight, Ilembe made the trip to Chatsworth on Sunday determined to come out unscathed in the Pool D in the hope

of securing a place in the semi-finals. But, after Saturday’s thunderous downpour in Chatsworth and the absence of covers overnight, the pitch was unplayable, paving an easy passage for Ilembe into the semi’s without facing a solitary ball. Dawnheights notched up backto-back victories a fortnight ago. They trounced Railways by 79-runs at the Maidstone Ground in the morning and returned to KwaDukuza in the afternoon to secure a fluent 5-wickets victory against Simplex RHCSC. On Sunday, they travelled to the Rainham Ground to do battle with Phoenix in a crucial Pool B fixture. Due to a wet pitch, the match was reduced to 14 overs. Dawnheights won the toss and elected to field first. The hosts were restricted to 35/7 at the end of the 14th over with none of their batsmen recording double

ute, butsquanderedtheopportunityafter kicking wide of the far upright. Barely five minutes later, Nxumalo beat the offside trap and held his head in disbelief after his tame shot beat the Rocky Park keeper, but ricocheted off the upright. In the 15th minute, Sphiwe Mbut howasperfectlypositionedinthebox, but ballooned the ball way over the crossbar. After soaking up the early pressure, Rocky Park settled down midway into the first half with the Singh twins, Rishal and Rishel making some darting runs into the Siyazama box. In the 25th minute, the Siyazama keeper was fortunate to get away with a yellow card after bringing down Rishel in the box. The referee did not hesitate to award Rocky Park a penalty which was calmly converted by Simo Ntanzi to give his side a 10 lead. In the 30th minute Nxumalo beat the Rocky Park left back with some fancy footwork, but instead of passing the ball to the unmarked Mbutho in the box, he took a shot at goal, hitting the sidenet ting. Just before the break, Mbutho watched agonisingly after the ball flashed across face of the Rocky Park goalmouth, needing a gentle from one of his teammates. Early in the second half the partisan crowd at the Recreation Ground were privy to a stunning volley from Rishal

Singh, who doubled Rocky Park’s advan tage (20). Immediately Siyazama made a dou ble substitution bringing on Sanele Zungu for Sipho Zulu and replacing sibling Sihle Zulu with Msawenkosi Mapholoba. Nxumalo received a perfect pass from Zungu in the 50th minute, but blasted the ball wide. Sphamandla Khoza squandered a golden opportunity of reducing the deficit in the 55th minute after being perfectly positioned in the box, but he missed the target from close range. With 15 minutes remaining, the Singh twins were involved in some neat exchange of passes before Rishel dribbled past the Siyazama keeper togiveRockyParkacomfortable30lead. But, Siyazama piled on the pressure despite trailing 30 and reduced the defi cit (31) after substitute Zungu latched onto Mnqobi’s cross from the right flank and headed the ball past the Rocky Park keeper. With 10 minutes remaining, Siyazama scored from a goalmouth scramble to re duce the deficit (32). In the 70th minute, Rishel was brought down just outside the box by the Siyazama keeper, Mthobisi Mbambo who received a second yellow card, followed by a red one and marching orders. Siyazama central defender Khulule khani Mzimela was handed the goal keeping gloves and was immediately in volved in the action, making a brilliant save. Rocky Park survived a late penalty appeal against them in the dying minutes of the game and were fortunate to walk away with three points. A dejected Siyazama coach, Khanyis ani Dube said: “It is obvious we threw away our chances of winning the game in the first half and had the boys converted those opportunities, it would have been a different result”.
