Be the light in the life of a child >> Help leukaemia patient find a donor

D

ESPITE being blinded due to Leukaemia at the tender age of 10, Raeesa Ismail is setonnotlosingsightofherdreamwhich is to one day become a teacher. This is evident as she happily speaks about her favourite subjects and teacher whom she describes as “friendly and caring”. “My favourite subjects in school are natural science, Afrikaans, social science and English,” she said. “My favourite teacher is my English teacher, Jay Naidoo.” Her condition has eclipsed her chances of attending school, which, she said, if she could would bring joy into her life. However, due to her condition, the slim prospects of her acquiring an education this yeardeeplyworriesherauntandcurrentguardian, Therasa Premananthan. “I don’t have transport to take this child to go to school,” said Premananthan. “That is my biggest problem.” Raeesa was diagnosed with Leukaemia three years ago and towards the end of 2012 she unfortunately became blind casting her life into a dark spiral of loss, longing and the rigmarole ofseekingmedicalhelpandhopingforamiracle in the form of a bone marrow donor. In August last year Raeesa lost her mother who passed on due to natural causes, leaving her and her eldest sister in the care of Premananthan. Raeesa spends her days inside the house, longing to be in the company of her peers, on the playground enjoying the sunshine before the bell rings to summon them back to class. Her aunt said that she recently took her for a medical check-up at Chief Albert Luthuli Hospital andaskedthedoctorifanythingcould be done to help the young girl regain her eyesight. “I spoke to the doctor to find out if she could have a donor and they said they can’t do it,” her aunt explained. Since the beginning of this year Premananthan has been trying to find transport for her niece. “The transport would be an appreciated help that would ensure that Raeesa can travel

to Durban, to the nearest school which can accommodate her as she is visually impaired. All I ask for is a reliable person who can help.” She said that the only other option that is available is to send Raeesa to a special boarding school in Pietermaritzburg. But young Raeesa feels more comfortable in the presence of her loving family members and weeps at the idea of being sent away even when her aunt reassures her that they would visit her regularly.

There is a glimmering ray of hope for the young Chris Brown fan as The Elleah Rose Foundation will host a blood and bone marrow drive on Saturday, 21 March at the White House Centre car park. This drive is beneficial for leukaemia patients. Dr Judy Vythelingam of the Elleah Foundation appealed to the public to assist them as Raeesa and another patient are without transport to get to the open air school in Durban. “Bone marrow is race specific. T

HE iLembe District Municipality started its drought awareness and water conservation programme last week. The objective of the programme is to address communities about water conservation. The programme sees political office bearers and officials visiting customers in their homes and gathering with ratepayers in community meetings. Mayor Welcome Mdabe led a delegation of municipal officials, councillors and other relevant stakeholders in KwaChappies, Ward 14 in Mandeni. Some of the issues discussed include water conservation methods,

impact of drought, pre-paid meters, infrastructure in the wards, and a number of illegal connections, vandalism, indigentpolicyandsewertariff. Pamphlets, fridge magnets, juice bottles and t-shirts with clear messages of the importance of saving water and using it sparingly were distributed during the door to door visits. After the home visits, a public meeting was held where Mdabe encouraged the community to embrace the new prepaid watering system, and to apply for these meters. “The whole province is facing a drought and has been since last year. These new meters will help all of us save water and save money as well as you only pay for what you use,” he said.

According to KZN SAPS spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane, on 1 January this year in the Masangweni area, Maphumulo, two young girls Zandile Ngubane (17) and Ayabulela Ngubane (23) were shot and killed. “The suspects met two girls who required a lift. >> New KwaDukuza station commander promises big changes SEASONED station commander with 14 years experience at the helm, Brigadier BhekiZondisaidthattheKwaDukuza police force has “capable” and “optimistic” members within its ranks. He said that the co-operative relationship he has established with the general public will ensure that crime is brought down in the area. Brigadier Zondi officially took over asstationcommanderatKwaDukuza SAPS on 1 March after a short period as acting station commander after controversial former commander Brigadier Bongiwe Sithole was transferred. His first appointment as a station commander came in 2001 at the Bellair police station in Durban where he served for four years. In 2004 he was assigned as head of the Hillcrest SAPS where he spent six years. Thereafter, he was transferred to Umhlanga where he spent another four years before moving to KwaDukuza. “When the previous station commander [Sithole] was made cluster commander in Pinetown I was asked by management to fill this post on an acting basis,” he said. He added that once the post was eventually advertised he applied like all other eligible candidates, and on 1 March this year he was officially instated as the station commander. According to Zondi, “A lot still has to be done in KwaDukuza. Since my arrival there is a lot of problems that has been identified.” One of those is murder which is a major concern for him. “Other crimes are also a concern, crimes like car hijacking and house break-ins,” he said. Backed by a team comprising “capable” and upbeat individuals, the brigadier is hopeful that they will emerge victorious in the war against crime.

His hilarious, reserved comedy style has won him a SA Comics Choice Award and also ensured that he was one of the few top SA acts selected to tour with Trevor Noah on his 2014 sold-out ‘Nation Wild’ tour.

He has made numerous TV appearances (‘L.O.L’, Comedy Central, ‘Late Night News with Loyiso Gola’) and is undeniably entertaining to watch! Your host: Carvin Goldstone If you’re not a fan…then you’ve clearly never seen him perform before. Without a doubt, this man is one of Durban’s funniest and most successful stand-up acts. Support act: Loyiso Madinga Winner of the 2012 Graca Comedy Showdown and more recently a 2014 Savanna Comics’ Choice award-winner, Loyiso Madinga has taken the comedy world by storm. He’s performed on Comedy Central’s Live at Parkers, and has shared the stage with many of SA’s best, including Trevor Noah himself. In fact, he’s just finished touring the country with Trevor Noah on his sold out ‘Nation Wild’ tour. Fresh, original, and hilarious, this is one act to look out for. Written in the stars?

OMEGA MOAGI

I

N this post-modern age it is unorthodox to believe in astrology. To believe that such seemingly arbitrary planetary movements could manifest in our daily lives, in our beings, seems crazy. Poet Rudy Fransisco starts off one of his poems (My honest poem) with "I was born on July 27, I guess that makes me a Leo, I have no idea what that actually means..." At that declaration audiences are beckoned to join in the chuckle regarding astrology as of no real importance in one’s identity. In another comment pop singer Pink! says, "Hi I'm Pink! I'm a Virgo and I'm gay. I'm actually not but I was hoping that 'I'm gay' would have the same (non) effect as 'I'm a Virgo'". Without reducing the statement's political importance I would like to point out again how astrology is deemed irrelevant. I am a Gemini - the twin sign. This should mean I am two persons in one, a multifaceted character who can shift and change as the weather or rather, the very day itself.

"Impossible to pigeon hole, she (the Gemini woman) is a will-o-wisp, a changeling, a mix of intriguing personalities. One minute demure and doting, the next ruthlessly sarcastic. “Gemini can turn from Madame Jekyll, dottingherI'sandcrossingher T's with impeccable manners, to Ms Hyde, wild and unpredictable, but no less fascinating..." reads a description by Annie Heese and Adam Banks of Café Astrology. This is all thanks to the planetary

ships and predict their economic fortunes, among other divinations” explains astrologer Ed Grabinowski. Studies are categorised in different forms and categorised according to their outcome are mundane astrology, interrogatoryastrologyandnatal astrology. Well, think of it this way - after observing certain events in daily life for a while, the first star gazers noticed a correlation between these events and the movements of the planets. Imaybetryingtojustifyaseemingly religious inclination here, but aren'tallhypothesisscientificallyinvestigated via the collection of empirical evidence to either confirm or refute them. Now the apparatus used in astrology may be physically unverifiable but hey, science in this enlightenment age has evolved to such. Anyway I'm a believer. And for the most part my horoscope predictions turn out pretty accurate. But it is because I believe in it, you argue even after having read this whole piece. I will only add that yes, in fact I am a believer. I am a fearful believer in all things. So if nothing else this piece is a reflection of my appreciation of those secret writings in the sky where the Lord also sits. It is beautiful."

OPINION

Cope condemns robbery of SABC reporter CONGRESS of the People condemns the attack and robbery of SABC reporters in the strongest possible terms. When ordinary people complain about crime being out of control, government does not take that seriously. Congress of the People, however, doesn't have any doubt that the public robbery of Mr Vuyo Mvoko and his colleagues, in full view of television cameras, must have shocked millions of TV viewers. We must say we are very grateful that they are still alive. It could have been worse. The government is always in denial about crime and tell us that it is

only the enemies of the country who want to paint a bad picture of South Africa. The reality of the situation is that crime has reached crisis proportions. If one opens a newspaper or looks at news on television, crime is dominating the news. We can't say journalists are just manufacturing the stories. Crime does not have any boundaries and it affects us all. Congress of the People calls on the police to leave no stone unturned, to put these monsters behind bars. They are a danger and menace to us and must be removed from society. Dennis Bloem

not done a good job of putting the most violent criminals behind bars. To be frank about this, I don’t think it is fair to continue to ask the police to go after the same guys over and over again and put themselves in dangerous situations when these offences are plead away or dismissed in the courts. If we do not support the initiatives to reform the system, the verdict could only be: guilty of waste and injustice. Nobody is a criminal from birth. It is the environment in which he grows up that makes him a criminal or a respected man. Some people turn into criminals due to poverty as they are not able to nourish their families. WHETHER crime is on the increase or de crease and presumably under control does not give our South African community any sense of comfort. I see no point in finding excuses or re searching the cause associated with crime whether it is due to the high rate of unem ployment, socioeconomic conditions or plain greed. Brutal crime is now a reality which is experienced throughout the coun try in places such as commercial, industrial and residential areas. It is a mammoth task to curb, eradicate or control crime at the moment unless fac tors such as strengthening our border con trols, corruption and strict laws are applied in the issuing of firearm licences. These are to be addressed on an ongoing basis. I am of the opinion that most of the highly so phisticated weapons are acquired at a pit tance from our neighbouring countries and brought into our country. Speak to some of the people who come from outside the country such as from Mo zambique or Zimbabwe and they will tell you that you do not require a passport to get in and out of SA because there are lots of taxis which use side roads to bypass the SA borders posts which taxis operate on a regu lar basis. Brazen criminals are now parading our cities, towns and residential suburbs with highly sophisticated weapons. I do not be lieve that most of our SAPS officers who are on patrol are suitably equipped to match

these perpetrators of crime. InsomesituationstheSAPSofficersmay need to call for backup which may come in too late. Brazen criminals appear to be well planned and organised operating mainly in gangs. They already have their back up on the scene. No matter how good or brave our po lice officer is it would prove foolish for him/ hertoplacetheirlifeontheline.Experienced criminals with their sophisticated fire power are fully aware of the police’s shortcomings and that is why many of them get away. These are merely a reflection of my thoughts which I believe you are aware of, or have heard many times before. Locally and especially in our suburbs we have recently experienced severe brutal crime inflicted by armed criminals/gangs. Armed perpetrators of crime have no ra cial divide. Whilst certain parties have been targeted for reasons unknown, criminals are also concentrating on residential properties for personal gain. Intheprocessextremeforceisusedcaus ing injury, perhaps loss of life, are being in flicted on our community robbing them of their hard earned possessions. Hijacking and robberies are being experi enced regularly mainly during the daytime whenmostofthepeopleareatworkorgone shopping. Elderly people and domestic help are of ten left at the mercy of criminals. One would

consider this happening generally as crimi nals attacking/taking advantage of soft targets. My concern is that if this trend continues there will come a time when the community will become unruly and feel that enough is enough and retaliate. Vigilantism will come into force and there may be severe repercussions. Peoplewillbecomesuspiciousofonean other. Anyone unknown in the vicinity will be viewed as a criminal. Law and order would become null and void. Innocent peo ple will become victims in the process. Job seekers will not be entertained. Most property owners have made a sac rifice in engaging the service of private secu rity companies at a high premium to protect their family and possessions. These companies are presently doing a good job however their scope is limited. I re alise that our SAPS have severe personnel and financial constraints and are not able to be zone patrolling everywhere at the same time trying to protect the community. I would suggest that a strongly motivat ed appeal be made to the relative SAPS de partment to consider setting up a satellite police station in Stanger Manor with a num ber of officers on duty. This would perhaps act as a deterrent to would be criminals and also provide some form of comfort to the community.

a lot of money. Butitisnotfair–anexcitingouting to the Wild Coast has always been special, but has now become an expensive lesson, a lesson not to support those who only want to take, and not give anything back. The NGB is a focused actiontaking leader in its scope of operation and parts of the “G” are, according to it, essentially equal which should form a mirror image portraying balance and equality. This was suggested due to the low credibility of the gambling industry from the pre-1994 era. It now seems to be worse than then. Are the employees of the provincial regulator and/or the NGB blind about what is happening at the casino? Is there someone who is getting an extra pay cheque? Where is the problem, definitely not with the people who still support them and then go home empty handed every time. Anonymous

A South Coast casino – corrupt? THOUSANDS of locals and holidaymakers visit the Wild Coast casino regularly and until new management took over, it was always a worthwhile venture. Slot machines usually paid out approximately 26% but lately payouts are limited to about five percent. The National Gambling Board of South Africa is a regulator with concurrent competencies with the provincial gambling regulators. It’s work is to ensure harmonisation and consistency with the National Gambling Act and its statutes. The NGB provides a stable environment within which the gamblingindustrycangrowitsoperations for the benefit of all. For the benefit of all is now the major question. One player played R6 000 into a machine during the past week – not one cent was paid out. Is this average? No, and it is not a once-off problem, it has been going on since January. It seems that locals now prefer to support smaller venues that are licensed with slot machines – just not to lose

Raising awareness of Down Syndrome

Founder of “You’re Magical” Trudy Chet ty.

>> Former Stanger resident forms support group

W

ORLD Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) is observed on 21 March. On this day, people with Down Syndrome and those who live and work with them throughout the world organise and participate in activities and events to raise public awareness and create a single global voice for advocating for the rights, inclusion and wellbeing of people with Down Syndrome. The date for WDSD being 21 March was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromo some which causes Down Syndrome. DownSyndromeisanaturallyoccurring chromosomal arrangement that has al ways been a part of the human condition, being universally present across racial, gender or socioeconomic lines. Down Syndrome is estimated to be present in one in every 1 000 live births in

developed countries and one in every 650 live births in developing countries. In South Africa it is roughly one in every 500. DownSyndromeusuallycausesvarying degrees of intellectual and physical disa bility and associated medical issues. Individuals with Down Syndrome are becoming increasingly integrated into so ciety and community organisations, such asschool, healthcaresystems, workforces, and social and recreational activities. Individuals with Down Syndrome pos sess varying degrees of cognitive delays, from very mild to severe. Most people with Down Syndrome havecognitivedelaysthataremildtomod erate. Duetoadvancesinmedicaltechnology, individuals with Down Syndrome are living longer than ever before.

In 1910, children with Down Syndrome were expected to survive to age nine. With the discovery of antibiotics, the average survival age increased to 19 or 20. Now,withrecentadvancementsinclin ical treatment, particularly corrective heart surgeries, as many as 80% of adults with Down Syndrome reach age 60, and many live even longer. “You’re Magical” is a support group founded by Trudy Chetty. It is designed to assist people with Down Syndrome and to let them know they are special, gifted and unique. “Our mission is to create and nurture a loving and inclusive community celebrat ing every person with a disability, including Down Syndrome,” said Chetty. “We will accomplish this mission by empowering and supporting families and individuals who have been touched by

Down Syndrome. “We want to work together to increase education, promote public understanding and acceptance, work toward full inclu sion, and defend the civil rights of individu als with Down Syndrome,” she added. One of the services the group will offer is speech and occupational therapies, free of charge. “Children with Down Syndrome have speech impediments and this service will help families that cannot afford specialist fees. “Something people may not be aware of, for instance, is the need for babysitters. “Many parents who care for children

with disabilities often need just a night off. Babysitters is also one of the services to be offered by You’re Magical,” said Chetty. For more information on “You’re Magi cal” contact Trudy Chetty: email yourem agical@webmail.co.za or 083 3181276. A talent show will be held at the Essen wood Flea Market, Musgrave, Durban to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day on Saturday, 21 March at 10am. AllthosewhohaveDownSyndrome,in clusive of special needs schools, are urged to participate in this event. They’re welcome to present any item ranging from dance, singing, modelling, skits, etc.

WEEKLY REPORTER THERE were major upsets in the Jerry Arunachellam and Family-sponsored mixed trebles darts tournament (hosted by KwaDukuza Darts Association) held at the North Coast Tavern on Wednesday night. Darrel Shanmagum, who enjoyed a purple patch since the start of the 2015 season, winning no less than two singles titles, joined forces with Vigen Murugan and sponsor Arunachellam.Afterbeingdrawnabyein the quarter-final, they came up against veteran campaigners Paddy Padayachee, Sanjay Singh and Charlie Pillay, who ousted the youthful trio of Sidney Naicker, Jodie Naidoo and Justin Naidoo in the quarters. Shanmagum, Murugan and Arunachellam were firing blanks against a psyched-up trio of Padayachee, Singh and Pillay in the semi-final, who produced scintillating darts to register a fluent 2-0 win to book their place in the final. The more fancied trio of Neeran Somnath, Terrence Subban and Balu Pillay were blown out in the quarters after slumping to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Yogan Pillay, Vishalin Parmasivan and Jerry Govender. Vasa Rungasamy, Nine Pillay and Vinesh Geanballey suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Devan Gounden, Dennis Govender and Preggi Appadora in the first set of their quarter final clash. But, Rungasamy who notchedupabrilliant171(threetriple 19’s) kept his team in contention for honours after annexing the second

set to level the scores at 1-1 and push the game into a third and decisive set. Pillay and Geanballey upped their tempo in the final set, cantering to victory (2-1) to secure a semi-final berth against Yogan Pillay, Parmasivan and Jerry Govender. The semi-finals proved to be a real humdinger with both teams producing brilliant darts to secure a place in the final. Rungasamy,PillayandGeanballey drew first blood after winning the 1st set, but Yogan, Parmasivan and Govender came back strongly midway into the second set to collar their rivals and secure a hard fought win. Withthescorestiedat1-1,thefinal set proved to be crucial for both teams intheirquestforhonours.Yogan,Parmasivan and Govender had only themselves to blame after a disappointing performance in the final set. They failed to produce consistently high scores in the final set which resulted in them going down (2-1). Padayachee, Singh and Pillay stunned their more youthful opponents after winning the opening set of the final. But, Rungasamy, Nine Pillay and Geanballey, who were late out of the starting hammered their rivals in the next two sets to clinch (2-1) the mixed trebles darts title. PresidentofKwaDukuzaDartsAssociation (KDDA), Jerry Govender thanked Arunachellam and Family for their generous sponsorship. United, Stars share the spoils >> Log leaders United expected a big finish WEEKLY REPORTER

OCKY Park United and Nandi Shooting Stars shared the spoils (11) in a SAFA KwaDukuza Local Football Association Premier League (stream two) stalemate played at the Recreation Ground on Saturday. Log leaders United, boasting seven wins and a solitary loss since the start of the 2014/2015 season arrived at the Rec reation Ground in high spirits, anticipat ing to bag all three points against the fourthplaced Stars outfit in the hope of extending their lead at the summit of the log table. But, they were in for a rude awakening

after a dismal performance and were for tunate to return home with a point. The Ntshawinibased Stars outfit squan dered a golden opportunity of breaking the deadlock as early as the fifth minute after Samkelo Maphumulo was involved in a oneonone with the United keeper, but he fluffed his shot, kicking wide. Ten minutes later Bongani Xulu beat the United central defender with ease, but blasted the ball over the crossbar. Midway into the first half, the United twin strikers, Rishel and Rishal Singh wreaked havocupfront, butfailedtobeattheStars keeper, Cebo Mthethwa who made some brilliant saves. In the 25th minute, Tyrell Canary play

ing on the far right flank beat his marker before making his way into the box, but his finishing was woeful, missing the tar getbymiles.Justbeforethebreak,Nhlah la Dube held his head in disbelief after missing the target from close range. Early in the second half, Siyabonga KhuzwayolatchedontoacrossfromXulu, but headed the ball over the bar. On the stroke of the hour mark, United wereawardedafreekickfromjustoutside the box after a horrendous tackle by Zaya Mthembu. Riaz William’s brilliantly exe cuted curling free kick beat the keeper and went into the top left hand corner of the net to give United a 10 lead. Minutes later United were awarded yet another freekick, but this time Willi ams failed to curl the ball, resulting in him missing the target. With less than 10 minutes remaining Starswereawardedafreekickjustmetres outside the box. Muh Khathi’s freekick was a replica of Williams, beating the United keeper Thobelani Mthembu to snatch a vital equaliser (11). Minutes later Khuzwayo could have sealed all three points for Stars. Grove End clinch Top 8 K.O. Cup >> Dominating team finishes on top WEEKLY REPORTER

ROVE End clinched the Trophies Engravers-sponsored KwaDukuza Volleyball Association (KDVA) Top 8 Knockout Cup after trouncing arch-rivals KSST in straight sets (2-0) before a partisan crowd at the association courts on Thursday night. The former VSA (Volleyball South Africa) champions, KSST were at sixes and sevens right from the start and watched in awe as Grove End catapulted to greater heights right from the start. Proud manager of the Grove End outfit, Pravin Thulsiram watched with glee from the touchlines after his son, Cyprin combined superbly with setter Desmond Pillay to give his side a 9-4 lead. Chasingamammothfivepointdeficit, KSST capitalised on the penetration errors of their opponents (which was watched like hawks by the umpires) to level the scores at 12-12. Kyle Puckree, who has been below par throughout the first set, gave KSST a glimmer of hope after hammering the ball down the line to reduce the deficit to three points (2124). Daniels sprawled himself to retrieve the ball, but followed it up with

a horrendous attack on the net that allowed Grove to secure a comfortable 25-21 win in the first set. The reigning KDVA Competitive League champions Grove End stamped their authority in to take a commanding 7-2 lead in the second set. Successive service errors by Athymoolam and Puckree followed

Kevlin Naidoo top-scored with 17 runs. North Coast Primary conceded more than 35 runs in extras.
