HE father of his injured child, Thobani Shongwe, is unhappy about the outcome of a meeting to discuss an injury inflicted on his son when he was admitted to Stanger Hospital in 2010. Sipho Mbambo laid a complaint after Thobani sustained an injury on his forehead in hospital when he was 20 months old. Health ombudsman from the Pietermaritzburg office Bhekiswayo Mboneni said in an email response: “The meeting with Mr Sipho Mbambo and the hospital was called by my office in order for him to get the hospital’s explanation concerning his complaint.” According to Mbambo the toddler had no injuries prior to his admittance.

“Today [10 April] they told me I should just accept the apology that my son was injured while in their care and that they had acted negligently by not informing me about the injury,” said Mbambo. Mboneni confirmed that the hospital had admitted negligence on its part. “The hospital did not apologise for not informing him about the cause of the ulcer and the failure by nurses to explain its occurrence.” According to Mboneni, the boy’s father accepted the apology. However, the father is not satisfied with this and wants compensation for what the nurses did to his child. “My boy does not act normal, even when he is climbing a tree and you tell him to get down he just throws himself to the ground. “His behaviour worries me and I believe it was caused by the injury he sustained in 2010,” he said.

Speaker celebrates Freedom Day in Groutville >> ‘All should enjoy equal rights and this includes foreign nationals’ MAKHOSANDILE ZULU

NC chairperson and Speaker of the National Assembly of South Africa, Baleka Mbete celebrated Freedom Day with the ANC from the Greater Kwa Dukuza region at the Groutville sports ground on Sunday. The event was titled ‘Celebrating 60 years of the Freedom Charter’ and Mbete’s speech focused on the 10 clauses of this document which was adopted at the Congress of the People in Kliptown in 1955. Mbete said that when the ANC came to power in 1994 it was the organisation’s resolution to ensure that the Constitution of the country reflects the principles of the Freedom Charter.

She added that there is a plan to write the Freedom Charter in all the official lan guages of South Africa. She said that things such as racism and xenophobia, the economic marginalisa tion of the previously disadvantaged, cor rupt police officials, to name a few, go against the principles of the Freedom Charter and that branches’ rank and file should play a role in ensuring that this doc ument changes the lives of the constituency. “All shall enjoy equal rights,” she said, reading from the Freedom Charter, adding, “and this includes foreign nationals and the ANC should ensure that this is the case,” said Mbete. During the handover, the organisation’s contingent was led by regional chairperson and KwaDukuza Mayor Ricardo Mthembu, accompanied by national chairperson and Speaker of the National Assembly of South Africa Baleka Mbete. Mthembu said the food parcels are a little offering the organisation can offer to the elderly who keep themselves healthy by taking part in various sporting codes. Upon entering the centre’s

Public Works Programme and one million job opportunities through community work programmes, said Mbete, who said that government has said 90% of pupils are to be trained and it is the duty of councillors to inform the people about such programmes. Addressing the organisation’s youth league, Mbete said that the league should ensure that the country’s youth are given the opportunity to learn as per the Charter’s clause which reads: “The doors of education and learning shall be open.” She said that the history books being used in schools are still Eurocentric and should be rewritten. She stressed that mathematics and science should be prioritised in previous ly disadvantaged schools so that the

FTER being listed in the top 40 upcoming artists in the country by the Association of Independent Recording Companies (Airco) in South Africa, Stampeed, a local hip-hop outfit, was awarded the opportunity of shooting their first music video. Airco, inpartnershipwiththeSABCandthe Department of Arts and Culture, subsidised the video which will, once production is complete, be broadcast on the TV music show Live Amp, says group member Nkululeko Sithole. Airco chairperson Dodo Monamodi said: “The aim of this subsidy is to make sure these companies and artists remain independent by owning 100% of their work.” Airco, he said, would continue to keep a close eye on these “indies” until they become fully fledged industry players. Sithole says the subsidy for a music video shootfortheirsongBirthdayYam,wouldhave not been a success had it not been for the sponsorship they received from local businesses. “I’d like to extend my gratitude to Enterprise iLembe, Nandos Stanger, which provided over 60 meals for us, Spar Stanger for the snacks and refreshments, Simply Models, which provided us with top-class models, Bus Life Family, which helped with transport and last, but not least, the Palms B&B where our video was shot,” he said. The video is due to air in six weeks, but Sithole says their music is available on iTunes. For bookings, contact them on 076 912 2945 or email stampeedsa@gmail.com

CANCER patient and disability grant beneficiaryJaishiriSoobramoneyisappealing to those who might have the means to help her as she is struggling to make ends meet. She was diagnosed with cancer in 2013 and said as her condition worsens, the medical attention it demands keeps gnawing away at her small income. She’s been in and out of Chief Albert Luthuli Hospital and worries that her home is left at the mercy of burglars when she is there. Unfortunately, on 12 April, while in hospital, her fears became a reality when her home in Rocky Park was broken into and her electrical appliances, groceries and R2 900 in cash were stolen. She has opened a case with the police and hopes the suspects will be apprehended and her goods returned. Wishing Shri Durga Temple a blessed 3rd Annual Chithira Paravum Kavady Festival The site on which the Shri Durga Temple was built on was donated to the Hindi residents of Stanger Manor by the Developers of the Stanger Manor Township, Shakot Investments (Pty) Ltd. The custody of this property was left in the hands of the oldest Temple in Stanger viz. Stanger Siva Temple in the early seventies, some 40 years ago. The Stanger Siva Temple, made several attempts to build a temple on the given site, with the help of the Hindu residents. Many meetings and discussions were held with the Stanger Siva Temple society and finally the Temple site was handed over to the interim committee, Stanger Manor Hindu Temple Society. There were some setbacks initially, but these were overcome. A steering Committee was elected on Saturday, 22 November 2008. Many members have joined the Temple Committee since then. The Temple is now fully operational, but requires a Resident Priest. The post for a Priest has been advertised. This Temple caters for the whole Hindu Community of Stanger and its surrounding areas, observing all Hindu functions and religious prayers on the Hindu calendar. This Temple is presently served by the following executive committee members:1) Mr Prem Maharaj 2) Mr Som Mudaly 3) Mr Vis Govender 4) Mr Ram Makardood 5) Mrs Mala Murugan 6) Mr Allan Murugan 7) Dr Malani Mudaly

ANC regional march against xenophobia MAKHOSANDILE ZULU THE Greater KwaDukuza ANC Region ral lied against the xenophobic attacks that spread throughout the country recently. Led by the ANC’s regional leadership, the masses marched in the streets of

KwaDukuza chanting “down with xeno phobia” and appealing with the public to refrain from partaking in acts of xenopho bic violence. The peaceful protest was headed for the KwaDukuza SAPS where a memoran dum, condemning the xenophobic vio lence, was received by Colonel Mdumiseni Nene, on behalf of the police force. There was a resounding call to ‘say no to xenophobia’ made by speakers repre senting the SACP, ANC Women’s League and the ANC’s Youth League.

ANC regional chairperson, Ricardo Mthembu said that the aim of the march was for the organisation to appeal to the police force to act with diligence when dealing with those caught committing xenophobic acts against foreign nationals. He acknowledged that there are for eignnationalswhotakepartincriminalac tivities, just like South Africans do, but urged the masses not to take the law into their own hands. Mthembu said that ANC members shouldplayaroleinensuringthatcriminal

ity, cloaked as xenophobic violence, does not destabilize local communities. Owner of Sophia Supermarket, which is in Ntshawini, Safdari Iqbal, a foreign na tional, said that the three years he has spent in KwaDukuza, running his business, has been peaceful, adding that he has a good relationship with the general public. Colonel Nene said, “The contribution made by this march is big, considering the current situation in the country,” adding that the police force is grateful of the sup port shown by the ANC.

Mthembu stressed that the governmentiscommittedtodeliveringhouses and said that the public should note that they only become rightful owners of land once the municipality has given them the title deed. He said that negotiations with those who own land are some of the things that slow down the process of building houses for the community. Pillay assured them they have been noted and a response would materialise once the relevant structures have completed their investigations. He said that MEC Mike Mabuyakhulu would call a “procurement indaba” next month which will be about tenders. He said that one of the proposals tabled at the indaba will be that small jobs should be set aside for small business tenderpreneurs.
