Elderly residents rejoice in new homes >> Keys to newly built houses handed over to two residents

MAKHOSANDILE ZULU

P

ROVINCIAL MEC for the Department of Human Settlements Ravi Pillay, the iLembe District deputy mayor Dolly Shandu and KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo

Mthembu handed over informal settlement upgraded houses to two recipients on Sunday. Alsina Masango (76) and Beauty Cele (90) officially received the keys to their new homes at eJenkane area, Groutville Priority 2 this weekend. The two-bedroom houses, which have electricity and running water and have donated furniture, are part of a project which will see 2 000 units constructed in the area, with an additional 1 770 to be built in areas around KwaDukuza. The project will be completed in July. Pillay said this is one way the

government is working towards changing the lives of its people. He said that through the co-ordinated efforts of the national, provincial, district and local governments such a project would have a meaningful impact to those who need shelter. The MEC said he was moved by the fact that one of the recipients, Masango, had been living in a shack for 25 years. >> STORY CONTINUED ON PAGE 4

>> Farm owners to lay criminal charges

The scene at the Green Fields farm on Monday.

A

N Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) protester was killed and three others were injured after being hit by a bakkie on the N2 outside Ballito on Monday afternoon. It has been reported that the party’s illegal land invasion protest at Green Fields farm in Ballito - which they invaded on Sunday - became increasingly dangerous when protesters moved onto the N2 and stoned passing vehicles. According to the Umhali SAPS, officers were on the way to the scene after receiving reports of the stoning when the accident occurred. It is believed that the leaders of the EFF group then disappeared from the scene leaving emergency services to handle the situation. However, once police and emergency services exited the scene the EFF

the courts on Monday to interdict the land invaders from returning. “Once we have the interdict that will be the end of our involvement. Before thedayisoutwewillhaveerectedsigns to warn people off and we will be employing a security contingent. “This is more about politicking than the piece of land and we want no involvement in that,” he said. Deetlefs said one “rudimentary” shack that had been constructed had already been pulled down. “There is a group of about 70 of them waiting on the boundary of the farm and the police are monitoring the situation there.” The EFF is to hold a media conference in Durban later on Monday to discuss its plans to occupy land across the province. EFF KwaZulu-Natal co-ordinator Vukani Ndlovu said on Sunday that his memberswouldnotbemovedfromthe land. “This land-grab is part of our provincial programme to claim land for our members. “This is not only happening in Ballito, but all over the province. “Ourmembersfromthatareadonot have places to build on so we encouraged them to look for land and occupy and start to build their homes. “They are going to erect their houses and once they have been there for 48 hours they cannot legally be removed. If the government wants to remove them they must go and accommodate them somewhere else,” Ndlovu said. “If they even try to move us we will meet them in court,” he added.

members returned. Now, the owners of the Ballito farm will lay criminal charges against the EFF brigade who tried to stage the land invasion. Ian Deetlefs, who represents the owners of the farm, said the land invaders had vacated the hilltop where they had spent the night. “It is a very simple thing from our side and while we may be sympathetic about the company for women their cause that they have no land to build on, we will take whatever legal steps that are MANY MORE JOIN needed to protect our interCHRISTMAS SPECIALS estsintherealestate,”hesaid. Pillay said: “We can’t do it for everyone at the same time,” explaining that the roll-out of such a project is a step-by-step process. “It requires a collective effort by all sectors of society to create the impact we want,” said the MEC. The elated pensioner, Masango, said that her previous home’s roof leaked whenever it rained. She said her children used to sleep on the floor. “I am so happy I feel like I am going to faint,” said Masango, who thanked those in power for the work they are doing. Mthembu extended his appreciation and thanks to the

president of the country, the Minister of Human Settlements Lindiwe Sisulu and the provincial MEC of the department. Mthembu said that such a project is testament to the fact that the government is committed to the principles of the Freedom Charter, one of which states: “There shall be houses, security and comfort.” Pillay commended the good working relationship that government has with its contractors as at times, said Pillay, they donate furniture and sponsor houses. The houses in this area are yet to be fitted with a sewage system. In the meantime, the occupants are said to be willingly using VIP toilets.

WADUKUZA Municipality joined forces with IPSS Medical Rescue over the Easter weekend and is positive that the partnership will remain beyond the holidays. Speaking about the partnership KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu said: “We are particularly impressed by what the agency has committed to offer – we feel our partnership will assist the community of KwaDukuza by ensuring the safety of everyone.” The emergency service providers offered its resources as part of intensifying the action to save lives within the community. “We are also happy about the timing of this partnership as it came at a time where we also beefed up our emergency services as we launched Operation Val’ingozi, an offensive aimed at curbing road carnage. “The capacity from IPSS helped us manage the emergencies on the sea-

front.” Mthembu added that they are happy that the additional assistance came at no cost to council and therefore no cost to residents. “We believe the services offered by IPSS Medical Rescue will contribute towards making KwaDukuza beaches safer.” IPSSspokespersonPaulHerbstsaid hisagencyappreciatesthepartnership with KwaDukuza. “We at IPSS Medical Rescue are committed to beach safety and with this in mind, we were happy to extend our services. “IPSS will be servicing KwaDukuza communities together with our emergency units. Party blames government for xenophobia take. Many foreigners become vendors on streets and townships, an activity from which no other South African is barred. Xenophobia tarnishes the image of South Africa internationally. Since the ad vent of democracy South Africa became a beacon of hope and a model example for the rest of the world. Xenophobia, in essence, is racist and prejudiced behaviour. It discriminates be tween South Africans citizens and citizens

MANY foreigners come to South Africa seeking refuge and safety. They have a right to be protected and assisted. South Africa must not forget how its own people sought refuge in other coun tries in the apartheid era, and how they were given asylum and assistance. They were certainly not persecuted or treated as criminals. All foreigners cannot beaccusedofcriminalelementsmostfor eigners are law abiding persons who have entered South Africa legally. Such are protected and share similar rights as citizens. Criminal elements may exist among some foreigners just as much as it exists among some South African citi zens. Foreigners cannot be accused of taking jobs from locals. Generally foreigners un dertake jobs that citizens are unwilling to

of other nations. It arises out of the percep tion that South Africans are superior and better while persons of other nationalities are secondrate. There has been a lack of firm action from the South African government since the widespread 2008 xenophobic attacks. Thesocalledinterministerialcommit tee established by government to address xenophobia has not been heard of since its inception subsequent to the 2008 attacks. There is a vacuum of condemnation of xenophobia from the president. There is no clear message from govern ment. Government statements about xen ophobia are ambiguous. As a result 35% of South African citizens feel that there is no danger to saying bad things about for eigners. Governmenthasnotreprimandedorre

Why has government failed to coordi nate a law enforcement response that aims to arrest anyone responsible for incit ing violence against foreigners or destruc tion of their property? Perhaps reprimanding their voters goes against their political ideology considering the upcoming local government elections next year. In the state of the nation address the president downgraded foreigners when he banned them from owning land in South Africa. This has not been clarified to date and

Deal directly with Eskom IT is time to become realistic. The country is in a mess and wanton spending by irre sponsible officials, whom are not qualified to perform their duties, has become a huge problem. An excellent example is the R1,2 million spent on a Christmas party which clearly does not fall under the scope of what rate payers hard earned funds are to be spent on. We all pay rates, but what is it that we

are paying for? We pay for all services except for the total mismanagement of the funds which is included in our rates bill. We have requested the qualifications of all municipal staff. Apparently most do not qualify for the standards required. No question, BEE is the single most im portant factor behind this shocking mess. It is time for all people to stand together as enough is enough. Eskom is in financial dire straits caused

thus sends a clear message to the grass roots that foreigners are not welcome to stay in South Africa. The demilitarization of our country’s borders after 1994 was an error of govern ment. The new government associated border military with colonialism & apart heid. The removal of proper border control mechanisms saw literally millions of peo ple gaining entry to South Africa illegally. Government does not have any social policies in place to teach South Africans about refugees, immigrants or our coun try's international obligations. IN LOVING MEMORY

IYAPPEN NAIR God never promised us roses without a few thorns, and he never promised us heaven on earth without a bit of hell. And when our dad was born, he never promised us that he will live to be old and grey. He promised to lend him for awhile, for how long, he did not say. For those who have a dad love them while you may. Because the world becomes a different place when god takes him away. Dad today, tomorrow and our whole life through. We shall love you, now and forever and long for you too. Dad you are one in a million. We’ll always love you. You and your family are kindly invited to attend the Yearly Memorial Ceremony of the late Iyappen Nair Date: Saturday, 18 April 2015 Venue: Darnall Temple Hall Time: 15:00 to 16:00pm Sadly missed by your loving family.

The powerful Globe Rangers Ladies outfit kicked off their campaign with a 8-0 routing of Melville Ladies in the quarter-finals and were strongly fancied to go all the way into the finals. But, in their semi-final clash against Lindelani, their strikers were woeful, missing the target from close range. Both teams failed to break in the first half. Early in the second half Nothando Busane should have opened the account for Lindelani, but her powerful long range shot just missed the far upright. In the 49th minute Nkukhanyo Msimang received a perfect through ball from Semtha, but she gently tapped the ball into the outstretched arms of the Globe Rangers keeper. With less than ten minutes remaining in regulation time, prolific striker Phindile Mncambi scored a beauty from just outside the box to send Globe Rangers crashing out of the tournament.

Darnall thumped VJ Ladies 8-0 in their quarter-final clash to secure a semi-final berth against Barcelona. In the 10th minute the Barcelona central defender deliberately handled the ball in the box and the referee did not hesitate to award Darnall a penalty. Nqobile Mtope calmly slotted the resultant spot-kick to give Darnall an early 1-0 lead. Five minutes later Zandile Gumede doubled Darnall’s advantage (2-0) after scoring from close range. Just before the break Zandile notched up a brace to give Darnall a commanding 3-0 lead. Midway into the second half, Zandile notched up a hat-trick to seal the fate of their rivals. Xoni Sakude hammered the final nail into the Barcelona coffin to give Darnall a fluent 5-0 win. Darnall and Lindelani Ladies will contest the final of the KLFA Women’s KO Cup on Saturday 25 April at the Stanger High School grounds.

Arhad scored 41 runs which included four fours before being adjudged LBW to a Abu Makhwaza delivery. Saurav Tambuti Singh was dismissed for a duck after being caught by Mohamed Ismail in the covers off the bowling of Yusuf Joosab.
