Taxi crash leaves 12 injured >> Two passengers seriously injured

WELVE people were injured in a taxi accident yesterday morning (Tuesday).

It believed that the driver lost control of the taxi travelling on the R74 near the Stanger Manor traffic lights.

However, according to IPSS Medical Rescue paramedics who were on scene, the exact cause of the accident is unknown at this stage.

“The vehicle rolled and came to a stand still at the Stanger Manor robots on its roof. Two of the 12 passengers where seriously injured. All 12 where transported to hospital by IPSS Medical Rescue and other services,” said a spokesperson.

S the minister for Human Settlements prepares to cast her sight on major housing projects in KwaDukuza during April, Priority 5 in Malende, Groutville remains one of them.

Ward 9 councillor Nomonde Mthethwa announced this after tablingherOperationSukumaSakhe War Room report in Malende Hall recently.

The minister Lindiwe Sisulu will visit the community to determine whether government priori-

ties and deliverables are being rolled out accordingly as part of promoting responsive, accountable, effective and efficient governance.

An undetermined number of beneficiaries have already taken occupationof738completedhouses which are fully-fitted with water-born sanitation and taps connected in their yards. About 900 homes are to be built in total.

She said the current government continues to shine because of the good work that has been carried out over the years.

“The squalid conditions that our people had to face in the past are now a thing of the past through government slums clearance projects.

“In such a short space of time, this project has changed many lives in my community, this clearly indicatesthathousingstillremains as an unsurpassed priority,” Mthethwa said.

THEKwaDukuzaMunicipalitylaunched a road safety campaign called Opera­ tion Vimbingozi last week.

There was a parade intended to raise awareness about the number of road accidents that occur during the long weekend period.

Thetrafficdepartment,theUmhlali dog unit, the fire department as well as paramedics attended the event and each staged an exhibition to help raise awareness.

Mayor Ricardo Mthembu called on all the relevant stakeholders to ensure that the number of accidents that oc­ cur during the holidays is brought down.

“We are rolling out this campaign in light of the holidays and long week­ ends,” Mthembu said whilst addressing a hall of people.

He also mentioned the tragic pass­ ing of National Public Administration Minister Collins Chabane, who lost his life when the vehicle he was travelling in collided with a truck.

Shoprite all the way up to the town hall and thereafter the fire department staged a rescue operation along with IPSS paramedics. The Umhlali dog unit also staged an exhibition.

According to the Department of Transport the number of deaths on the roads during Easter dropped in 2014 to 148, from 201 recorded in 2013.

TEN-year-old boy was lucky to escape with his life after a near drowning incident in Blythedale close to the river mouth on Monday, 6 April.

The boy and a group of his friends were swimming at a non-swimming beach close to Jax Estate according to IPSS Medical Rescue paramedics.

“He got into trouble at midbreak when a fisherman and some holidaymakers spotted him. The holidaymakers launched a canoe and they were able to rescue him,” said paramedic Paul Herbst.

KwaDukuzalifeguardsranapproximately two kilometres on the beach to the scene followed shortly thereafter by the all terrain vehicles and jet skis.

IPSS Medical Rescue transported the patient to hospital for observation.

Attend public meetings COMMUNITIES are urged to attend all public meetings scheduled by iLembe and KwaDukuza Municipalities.

More than 2490 petition were signed and acknowledged by iLembe against the rise in tariffs.

Overall increase in the current budget 2014/2015 was 10% plus cost reflective tariff of 17%.

Therefore, the total increase was 27%.

Added to that for the first time was a 70% sewer tariff based on water consumption plus a R120 basic charge. Your voice and input is vital

before a final determination is made in the new budget for 2015/2016.

There is anger in the community regarding the affordability of these municipal services. Guidelines clearly state a phased-in approach should be considered or simply revert to the oldsystemwheresewerchargeswere based on value of property.

With the high cost of living, coupled with inflation the increases are beyond one’s ability to pay for these services. It is important for iLembe to go back to the drawing board and explore all possible solutions to adhere tothecriesofthecommunity.Services at all times must be affordable and sustainable.

Disappointed by attitude of community leaders in Shakaskraal I AM writing this letter because I believe

that the community of Shakaskraal needs to be made aware of what is hap­ pening in our town.

As a local GP, I have found that drug addiction is a big problem in the commu­ nity.

Many lives are being lost, many fami­ liesarebeingdestroyedalthoughtheyare in a situation that I believe is salvageable.

I took the initiative to contact a world acclaimed addiction specialist, who is experienced when it comes to the treat­ ment of addicts as well as educating their families, in order to set up a drug awareness talk that would assist both young people and parents who are currently faced with drug­related prob­ lems.

I started in October 2014, trying to se­ cure a venue, where he could talk to the community, espe­ cially those in lead­ ership positions like teachers as well as parents.

But I always came to dead­end when trying to com­ mence this much­ needed project.

So, I decided at my own cost to hire the hall at Shakas­

The intention of hosting the drug awareness talk was not only to provide information, but also to form support groups for families affected by addiction and addicts themselves.

However, when I approached Shakaskraal Primary to make arrange­ ments to hire their hall I encountered nu­ merous challenges.

I experienced extreme disappoint­ ment and frustration due to the attitude of people who appear to have the mo­ nopoly on what goes on in town.

I was first told that I must apply in writing, which I did, but to date I have not received a reply.

Then I was told, by Mr Anthony Singh (previous chairperson of governing body) that the hall was booked and if I apply for another date that the hall would be booked on that date as well.

This is clearly abuse of his authority.

During the phone call, he seemed to have more political motives at heart, rather than community upliftment.

After chatting to Singh I begin to wonder if political agendas are actually holding back this entire community.

It is unfair, that in a community that needs so much upliftment, certain “kingpins” are acting in their own interest to prevent good things from tak­ ing place.

It is also not right that the school’s governing body is being turned into a po­ litical battlefield by its chairperson. It needs to be acknowledged that drug ad­ diction is rife in this town.

I cannot sit back and watch things go on the way they are.

If no one acts about the situation in our town, things may even get worse and the state of Shakaskraal can deteriorate to such an extent that we may have to contend with gangs, gang­related vio­ lence and drug­associated crime.

Community leaders should actually support initiatives like this drug aware­ nesscampaign,whichwillultimatelylend support to drug addicts as well as their families.

Instead, I have found the current community leaders acting in such a way so as to shut down any community initiative which will threaten their political agenda, and this is very disap­ pointing.

The drug awareness campaign will continue, irrespective of the current re­ sistance that is experience.

Government must provide alternatives to soften shock of rising electricity tariffs

ONGRESS of the People (Cope) is concerned about the impact of the rising cost of electricity on already strained household budgets.

With winter approaching, poor people in our country are going to have a dismal time.

All of us, whatever our situation, are going to have to pay for the shambolic chaos at Eskom.

Our burden is exacerbated by the political interference of the ANC in the running of the parastatals. Each failure of the Zuma administration is a further direct cost to every South African.

The government must help to ameliorate the situation by vigorously pursuing the extensive installation of solar geysers and not let up as it is doing. All homes should have various schemes for installing solar geysers through extended payment schemes. This is not an option any longer. It is a requirement for economic survival.

Cope also urges government to adopt an above-the-waist and below-the-waist supply of electricity to homes. We wish to see all lights and electronic appliances using direct current, supplied through affordable solar panels on roofs and batteries in the house. This is the direction in which the world is going and we cannot be left behind. This once-off cost, which can be met by extended payments to meet all circumstances, will allow homes to reduce their electricity cost. This will constitute the “above-the-waist”

A welcome for new business in Shakaskraal SHAKASKRAAL is a small town that has a bustling business hub.

Within the community is a large mosque, grocery stores, medical practices, hardware and clothing stores that service the community.

Besides the population of about 3 000 that is allocated to Shakaskraal, there is a large drainage area that surrounds this community.

People from Glendale, Nkobongo, Shayamoya, Etete and even people from as far as Tongaat and Maphumulo, visit the town to trade.

Residents from Ballito also frequently visit this town to get medical services at reasonable rates and with the same standard of quality as in any other areas.

In a nutshell, Shakaskraal has more potential for growth, especially if we can capitalise on the informal traders that are trading on the roadside. We have potential for a tourist industry, considering that places like Ballito are just a few minutes away.

We can even attract tourists that visit Rain Farm, etc.

Good business is welcome in the community as it will lift the standards of business and trade in the area.

Personally, I am glad that a KFC franchise has opened up in the town.

A business like that not only helps boost trade for the town, but considering the socioeconomics of the areas, one person employed means that an entire family can be sustained.

So a good business like that can boost trade aswellashelpsustainfamilieswhosometimes depend on a single income to survive.

I believe that Shakaskraal has much more untapped potential when it comes to trade and business, a potential, which if tapped into, will benefit many.

Every little bit will help stressed consumers.

Government cannot now sit back and expect people to go on absorbing the rising costs for electricity seeing that the government has contributed its share by poor decision-making and misguided policies.

OCALS and holidaymakers enjoyed two days of action-packed fun when KFC Family Days with East Coast Radio rolled into town on 3 and 4 April.

Packing loads of family fun the beach festival at Thompson’s Bay, Ballito was crammed with exciting games, fabulous prizes and good oldfashioned fun in the sand.

Families showed off their dance skills and competed in the family dip and dash race. Children had a go at beach limbo, sandcastle-building competitions and treasure hunts; while there was plenty of adrenalin with Frisbee, darts and foosball.

ECR presenter Msizi James made sure there was plenty of cool music and hot prizes to go around.

Council approved the following Draft Tariffs to be implemented with effect from the 1st of July 2015 RATE RANDAGE (Main categories listed hereunder) • 0.599 cents in the rand for residential property • 0.300 cents in the rand for agricultural properties • 1.854 cents in the rand for industrial business and commercial properties, vacant properties, public service infrastucture properties, state owned properties and properties used for worship.

More than 40 couples attended the event at the hospital.

HILD Welfare SA: KwaZuluNatal is calling on schools, business houses and the community to support the Tekkie Tax campaign on Friday 29 May. Tekkie Tax is an annual fundraising campaign for welfare organisations.

During April and May members of the community, schools and business houses will be asked to get a Tekkie Tax sticker for a R10 donation from Child Welfare SA: KwaDukuza.

There will be five different kinds of stickers, each representing a beneficiary sector.

People will be able to choose which of the five sectors they would like to support (children, animals, education, disability, basic community welfare) by buying one of those stickers from a sector of their choice.

The society thanks the community for supporting the Tekkie Tax campaign in 2014.

An appeal is made once again to the community to support this fundraising venture by purchasing a sticker for R10 to show which of the five sectors your heart lies.

On 29 May, people will be wearing their tekkies in support of this good cause.

Pupils are requested to wear their stickers to school on 29 May to show their support for Tekkie Tax. Tekkie Tax stickers are now available for sale at the society.

ARRIORS Sport clawed their way from a set down to edge out Randsons Volleyball Club (2-1) on Thursday night and booked their place in the final of the Caminamix Services-sponsored Easter Knockout Cup (hosted by KwaDukuza Volleyball Association).

Randsons were overwhelming favourites to advance to the final, but left the courts licking their wounds after a below-par performance.

Randsons took a narrow 10-7 lead after a scrappy performance upfront. The Shakaskraal-based

Warriors outfit took advantage of the catalogue of errors from the Randsons rearguard to level the scores at 11-11.

Lennox Dayi restored Randsons lead (13-12) with a classic second-ball dump that left the Warriors lads dumbstruck.

Sandhir “Tinboy” Jugmohan set the courts ablaze with a thunderous bazooka to extend Randsons lead (14-12).

Daniel John kept Warriors in the hunt for honours with some brilliant winners from power, to give his side a narrow 17-16 lead for the first time in the match.

Randsons manager, Aslam Randeree immediately summoned a

timeout and regained the serve after a lethargic no-pass by Sherwin Adyappa.

Jugmohan and Dayi combined superbly to give Randsons a commanding 21-17 and despite the late fight-back by Warriors, orchestrated by Nolan Govender, Randsons went on to clinch the set (25-20).

Randsons were caught flatfooted at the start of the second set, trailing 2-7 before taking an early timeout. But their woes continued after a series of atrocious, wayward attacking coupled with a net fault by new signing Nashlin Moodley.

throughout the second set spelt doom and gloom for Randeree’s charges and despite the solo effort of Dayi, Warriors went on to claim the second set (25-18) to level the scores at 1-1.

Warriors have proved to be a perennial thorn in the flesh of the Randsons outfit in knockout competitions in 2014 and the thought of making an exit from the Easter KO Cup began to haunt them (Randsons).

Randsons battled to string together three decent passes and found themselves staring at the barrel of defeat after trailing 2-6 in the final set.

Instead of pressing home the advantage, Warriors pressed the “self-destruct mode” button, making horrendous unforced errors which saw their lead vanish into the dark clouds.

With the scores locked at 6-6, Migeshan Govender scored a beautyfromthecentrefollowedby a “pan-cake” from Dayi to retrieve the ball that gave Randsons a crucial 8-6 lead at the change of sides.

The Warriors trio, Daniels, Govender and Adyappa, matched their more experienced opponents point-for-point and with the scores locked at 13-13, the atmosphere was tense.

Adyappa took Warriors to match-point (14-13) with a deft touch that caught the Randsons front-line flat-footed before Jugmohan blasted the ball way out of thecourtstohandvictorytoWarriors (15-13) on a golden platter.

In the second semi-final, leading contenders for the player-ofthe tournament award, Vinnie Singh and Cyprin Tulsiram guided Grove End into the final with a comfortable straight-set victory (2-0) against Darnall United.

Tomorrow, (Thursday) Randsons and Darnall will contest the play-offs for third spot at 7pm with the final between Grove End and Warriors Sport scheduled to get underway at 8.30pm.

Prize money totalling R3 700 will be awarded to the top four finishers with the winner waltzing away with a cool R1 500 and the runner-up pocketing R1 000.

KDAC athletes to make debut in Bosveld 3­in­1 race WEEKLY REPORTER SIX KwaDukuza Athletic Club (KDAC) athletes will be making their debut in the Bosveld 3-in-1 race on Saturday, 11 April 11 in Louis Trichardt (Limpopo Province).

Leon Moodliar, Vijesh Mahadew, Dippy Moodley, Nishen Chetty, Indran Naidoo and Danny Sewmungal have been training since the beginning of the year and are enthusiastic about participating in all three races.

The Bosveld 3-in-1, hosted by Soutpansberg Athletic Club, comprises a 42.2km marathon, a 21.1km half-marathon and a 10km run-walk.

The Bosveld 42.2km is a moderate and scenic race along the Soutpansberg with little traffic to trouble the runners.

The 42.2km race, which gets under way at 6am, will start and finish at the Soutpansberg clubhouse in Louis Trichardt.

The Nurgalieva twins, Olesya and Elena, who won the Two Oceans seven times, skipped this year to focus on the Comrades Marathon when they will meet new South African running sensation, Wostmann.

The men’s ultra-marathon title however, stayed in foreign hands for the ninth time in 12 years after Motlokoa Nkhabutlane of Lesotho shook off his challengers with 10km remaining to win by more than two minutes in a time of 3: 10.

Collen Makaza of Zimbabwe was second in 3:12 and Moeketsi Mosuhli of Lesotho finished third in a time of 3:13.

INESH Geanballey clinched the KwaDukuza Darts Association (KDDA) pre-season darts singles title after ousting Jerry Arunachellam (2-1) at the North Coast Tavern in KwaDukuza on Wednesday night.

Geanballey walloped Ashley Harripersaad in straight sets (2-0) in a one-sided quarter-final contest, to secure a semi-final berth against Nine Pillay, who eliminated the more fancied Vishalin Parmasivan (2-0).

Geanballey, who has been relishing a purple patch of brilliant darts throughout the 2015 season, continued his rich vein of form on Wednesday night, outclassing Pillay (2-0) to book his place in the final.

There were huge upsets in the top half of the draws.

Veteran darts campaigner Paddy Padayachee suffered a shock 2-0 defeat against Jerry Govender.

KwaDukuza Darts Association cap, Charlie Pillay, who participated in the past two national darts championship in Cape Town suffered a shock 2-0defeatatthehandsofrookie Arunachellam in the quarter-final.

Arunachellam proved that his win against Pillay was no fluke after trouncing Govender in straight sets (2-0) in the semi’s to book his place in the final.

The final between Geanballey and Arunachellam was a real humdinger with both

players producing brilliant darts. Geanballey was quick off the starting blocks, bringing down the 501 tally to 401 after notching up a ton (100) in his first three darts.

Geanballey raced to the finish line, needing 54 to close compared to the 100 required by his opponent. Geanballey needed just two darts to close, hitting 14 and closing with a double 20 (40) to take a 1-0 lead.

Arunachellam did not throw in the towel and rallied back gamely in the second set to stay in the race for honours.

Geanballey quickly brought down the total to 94 in the hope of closing the game with three darts.

He notched up a triple 18 (54) with his first dart and needed a double 20, his favourite home, to close with the two remaining darts. He missed the double narrowly, scoring 20 and was hoping to close with a double 10 with his third dart, but missed the target.

Arunachellam seized the opportunity with both hands, and needed 52 to close with three darts. He smashed a 20 with his first dart and closed on double 16 (32) with his next dart to level the scores at 1-1 and push the game into a third and decisive set.

Geanballeywasfiringonall cylinders in the final set, posting mammoth scores to quicklybringdownthe501-chaseto 116.

He recorded a triple 20 (60) in his first dart followed by a 20, to leave himself a double

18(36)closeonthethirdflight.

Geanballey, missed the target to offer his rival a lifeline.

Arunachellam, who had a mountain to climb, managed to bring his tally to 120 in his last three darts and was crossinghisfingers,hopinghisrival will miss the double 18.

But Geanballey needed a single dart to close on double 18 to notch up yet another major silverware of the 2015 season.

President of KwaDukuza Darts Association, Jerry Govender congratulated all players who participated in the pre-season singles tournament and heaped praise upon winner Geanballey and runner-up Arunachellam, who entertained the huge crowd with some superb darts, and finishing in the final.

KwaDukuza Darts Association is expected to move its league matches to The Quartz in Stanger Manor in the hope of attracting more teams and players before the league gets under way at the end of the month.

Also on the cards is a doubles league, with each team allowed to nominate any two players who will represent them each week. Each team can register a minimum of three teams with no ceiling on the maximum number of doubles teams.

The doubles league is expected to give officials of KwaDukuza Darts Association an opportunity of making selection for the forthcoming national darts championship much easier.

TOURNAMENT favourites Rocky Park United were blown out of the Easter Knockout Cup (hosted by SAFA KwaDukuza Local Football Association) after going down 4-2 on penalties to a 10-man Citizen All Stars outfit in the semifinals played before a huge crowd at the Recreation Ground on Easter Sunday.

The scene at the Recreation Ground on Saturday was reminiscent of the heydays of the “beautiful game” when a bumper crowd gathered to catch the action in the derby quarter-final clash between arch-rivals Rocky Park United and Rocky Park Football Club.

The youthful United outfit secured bragging rightsaftersendingtheirmoreillustriousrivals reeling out the Easter KO Cup. After a tame 1-1 draw in regulation time, the derby game had to be decided on penalties and United triumphed 4-2 to book their place in the semi’s.

The camaraderie between both teams was evident on Sunday after the players and fans of Rocky Rock Football Club came out in large numbers to support United. Stars advanced to the semis after trouncing Beez 3-1 at the Recreation Ground on Saturday.

United dominated the game from the start and should have broken the deadlock as early asthe10thminuteafterRishalSinghbrokefree on the left flank and hammered a thunderous shot which just floated over the crossbar.

Minutes later, twin Rishen Singh beat the offside trap, but blasted the ball way over the crossbar. In the 20th minute Simo Ntanzi received a brilliant through-ball and instead of shootingfromcloserange,lostpossessionafter trying to weave his way past the Stars central defender.

In the 25th minute Tyrell Goodwin latched ontoacrossfromRiazWilliamsandhammered the ball past the Stars keeper to give United a deservedly 1-0 lead. Stars goalkeeper Njabulo Ngqondo remonstrated with the referee alleging that Goodwin was offside.

The verbal tirade was too much for the referee and he immediately reached for his pocket, flashing a red card to give Ngqondo marching orders. Ayanda Nene was handed the goal-keeping gloves and the United fans expected the floodgates to open.

India honours SA karate legend >> ‘India is proud of its son’ WEEKLY REPORTER

RESIDENT of Karate South Africa (KSA) Hanshi Sonny Pillay was honoured recently by the Karate Association of India, the national karate federation for his immense contribution to the sport around the globe.

The South African karate legend was bestowed with a Commendation Award for being the first karate master of Indian origin and the only SouthAfricantobeawardedtheprestigious eighth Degree black-belt rank from the World Karate Federation (WKF).

President of the Karate Association of India, Ragupathy Thiagarajan paid glowing tribute to Pillay at the awards ceremony attended by 32 states, held during the recent senior national karate championship in New Delhi.

Thiagarajan said: “India is proud of its son, Hanshi Sonny Pillay for his phenomenal rise in the field of karate,

especially given the fact he was democratically elected the president of Karate South Africa.

“WeascustodiansofIndianKarate [KAI], salute Pillay on being the first amongustoreceivetheeighthDegree black-belt rank from the World KarateFederation,thehighestauthorityof karate in the world today.

Pillay, the 64-year-old karate maestro whose grandparents migrated to South Africa as “slaves” to work in the sugar-cane plantations, said he was overwhelmed by the warm hospitalityandthehonour bestoweduponhim in his motherland India.

“This rare accolade bestowed on me by the Indian karate hierarchy led by president Thiagarajan and the Secretary General, Bharat Sharma mustcertainlybeoneofthehighlights of my 47-year karate journey”, said the world renowned karate ambassador.

Pillay attributed hard work, commitment and dedication as the key ingredients to success.

Notching a hat­trick of victories WEEKLY REPORTER SQUASH sensation Lisa Maree Paterson notched up a hat-trick of victories to inspire Salt Rock I to a thrilling 9-6 win against Umhlali IV in a Dolphin Coast Squash Summer League game played at Salt Rock on Tuesday night.

Paterson came into Tuesday’s game boasting an impressive 2-1 win against Lylle Nell of Darnall and a 3-0 demolition of Bradley Paul of Tongaat in her past two league appearances.

TheacidtestforhercameinTuesday’s clash against the experienced Bev Livingston of Umhlali. In a titanic battle of supremacy, Paterson edged out Livingston (15-13) in the opening set to take a narrow 1-0 advantage.

Livingston threw the gauntlet in the second set, sprawling herself all over the courts to retrieve the ball and stay in contention for honours.

Shereturnedthefavourinthesecond set winning 17-15 to level the scores at 1-1 and push the game into a third and decisive set.

Bothplayersproducedtop-drawer, entertaining squash despite showing early signs of fatigue midway into the final set.

There was a brilliant display of side-wall boasts followed up by precision-timed drop-shots that would have made any squash coach proud.

Paterson, displaying the resolve to win, held onto a sensational 16-14 (2-1) victory to notch up her third successive league victory since the launch of the summer league in midMarch.

Ranjith Rhugoonan proved too classy for Noah Murray winning 2-1 (15-7; 10-15; 15-8) to extend Salt Rock’s lead (4-2).

The visitors lost their third league

match on a trot after Henry slumped to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Elvis Govender.

Trailing 3-6, Umhlali needed to win the two remaining league matches convincing in the hope of snatching victory from the jaws of death.

Prinolan Govender, playing at two, left the visitors awestruck after walloping Jules Nell in straight sets (3-0) to seal the fate of their rivals.
