OME Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba deliveredaferventspeechtoGroutville High School pupils last Friday cautioning them on the consequences of unprotected sex and consuming drugs and alcohol. He called on them to prioritise their education and to be more tolerant and compassionate towards their fellow African brothers and sisters. Gigaba and his wife Norma, who was celebrating her birthday, was accompanied by Dj Sgqemeza of uKhozi FM, gospel singer Thina Zungu and Dj Happygirl. Addressing pupils Gigaba said: “You must treasure the moments you spend at school. There is nothing more important for you than education,” he said. He expressed his pride in the school’s academic achievements adding: “We are building a country that must be known for the conquest and achievements of its people. “The country will be great not because of what your predecessors have achieved, but because of what you will achieve,” he said. Tasking the pupils with the responsibility of ensuring that the country, continent and the world is made a better place he said: “For us to be great, to reclaim the glory of our continent, to place Africa once more on the international stage, to put it on the map, we will depend on you as educated, skilled, passionate pupils who work hard and stay away from crime.” Urging the pupils to refrain from xenophobic violence he said: “Your responsibility as the people of South Africa, as the youth of our country, istosaynotohatredofforeignnationals, say no to hatred of fellow Africans, and commit yourselves to working hard.” Gigaba gave a short history lesson about the accomplishments of ancient African civilisations such as the scholars of Timbuktu, Egypt, Sudan and Great Zimbabwe’s unmatched architectural supremacy and the accomplishments of the Kingdom of Mapungubwe. “You have it in your genes to be great. You have it within yourselves to be things that the world cannot even imagine. “Out of you, the children of the African continent, something new and greater must

Make people envy who we are not because we are known for violence, crime, murder, hatred, jealousy, looting and attacks on fellow people, but because of what you will achieve,” he said. “Use this opportunity to become a great people. I believe in you. I trust in you,” charged Gigaba, “You can be better. You are better. You will be better.” Norma then donated a chess set to the school as a present to celebrate her birthday and promised to keep a close eye on the school’s performance.

Parents of pupils at Kearsney Primary School protested outside the school yesterday (Tuesday) after a Grade 5 pupil was allegedly raped last Tuesday, 14 April. It is believed that the pupil was abducted while on her way to school from her home in Lot 14, which is a distance away from the school. She was returned to the school at 2pm. Parents are now demanding that the school provide transport for pupils, claiming that in the new term, which began last Monday, two pupils have been victims of rape.

Marching against xenophobia

>> ‘I, for one, condemn how our fellow South Africans are behaving.’ JYOTHI LALDAS

I

N an effort to shed light on the plight of foreign nationals who have come under attack in the country this month, the Seventh Day Adventist Church held a peace march in the KwaDukuza CBD on Sunday. Various local organisations including schools and individuals participated in the march which aimed at educating the community of KwaDukuza on the injustice that is xenophobia. The march was supported by Department of Transport, Community Safety, and Liaison MEC Willies Mchunu, KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo

who accompanied his pupils to the march - said: “It is truly a sad and heartsoreissuehowourfellowbrothersandsistersarebeingtreatedinour country. “I, for one, condemn how our fellow South Africans are behaving. We should be a nation that spreads peace, hope, harmony, unityandlove. “Our respected late president Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in prison for our freedom and he had a principle which he stuck to - he was against violence among fellow Africans. I was truly hurt and disappointed with emergence of xenophobia and have decided to take a stand against it.” Hanuman and the Soul Buddyz club from the school made banners with slogans such as ‘Everyone deserves equality’, ‘No African is a foreigner in Africa’, ‘Unity-Hope-Harmony-Love-Peace’ and ‘Down with xenophobia down, down with blackon-black violence down, long live the ancient culture of Ubuntu, long live’.

Attend public meetings >> Attendance of public meetings paramount for change JYOTHI LALDAS

T

HE iLembe and KwaDukuza Municipalities will be presenting their annual budgets at various public meetings during April and May and it is vital for residents to attend. Amongst the items to be discussed by the KwaDukuza Municipality at these meetings will bethenewratesfactorstobeappliedtoproperty values as well as increases in refuse removal

ILEMBE District mayor Welcome Mdabe delivered an impassioned speech which called on the newly formed branch to play a pivotal role in the “reconstruction” of society, in light of the spate of xenophobic attacks that spread throughout the country recently. Themayorwasspeakingatthelaunchofthe National Interfaith Council of South Africa last Wednesday. The district’s branch of the National Interfaith Council of South Africa (NICSA) was launched at the iLembe auditorium where the African, Islamic, Nazareth, Hindu, Christian and Rastafarian religions were present as part of the faith-based organisation. Mdabe said that the council is faced with the mammoth task of unifying all Africans for the sake of attaining peace and prosperity adding: “Interfaith plays a central role in social cohesion, the reconstruction, and in the development of our own morals.” Mdabe delved into history, making reference to a clause in the Freedom Charter which states: “South Africa belongs to all who live in it”. In order to highlight what South Africa shares with other nations on the continent, he spoke about the varied contributions made by countries such as Nigeria, Angola, Uganda, Tanzania and even those abroad such as Russia and Cuba, towards the liberation of South Africa. He said that reflecting on the significance of such a history would help South Africans understand themselves better and their role on the continent. “Therefore, the interfaith council, part of its responsibility is to educate us in terms of understanding who we are.” Describing xenophobia as “backwardness” and a flagrant display of arrogance and as a “reactionary” attitude alien to the African virtue of ‘Ubuntu’ (humanity) Mdabe said that tolerance is an essential trait at such times. “The role of the South African interfaith council is to mobilise our South African people and our African brothers for a peaceful dialogue in terms of the differences of opinion and differences of religious affiliation, that is critical,” he said. In the pursuit of a more tolerant citizenry he reminded all, that social ills faced by South Af-

ricans cannot be overlooked, listing droughts, disease, unemployment, andpovertyassomeof the scourges that many have to endure.

Open season for lawlessness in SA

C

ONGRESS of the People demands to know whether the callous and easily identified murderers of Emmanuel Sithole will be delivered to court with all of the irrefutable evidence readily and easily available for instant prosecution. We feel so sick, revolted and horrified at the brutal and unprovoked murder of an innocent man for no other reason than that he was a Mozambican. That he was a fellow African mattered not a jot. Nothing less than swift and stern justice will suffice in the circumstances. For once the criminal justice system should show that the wheels of justice are capable of turning. UnderpresidentJacobZuma, becauseofhis own precarious legal position and constant fending off of criminal charges, consequences for illegal action have evaporated. People do notfearbreakingthelawbecauseofthegeneral malaise in the criminal justice system. Pemmy Majodina and John Block, notwithstanding their abuse of state funds, are still in office. Hundreds of officials who violated the PFMA and the MFMA with irregular and crooked tenders remain unscathed and unpunished. Zola Tsotsi, who is alleged to have wilfully bent procurement rules and incurred millions

of rands of cost for Eskom, remains scot free and perhaps unduly enriched from exerting pressure for irregular processes. Murderers, most frighteningly, can take lives of innocent people because they fear no consequences. Regardless of the available footage of wanton looting of foreign-owned shops over months, the minister has sat on his behind and done nothing whatsoever to display any reach of the law. To him it has never been a priority. What a scandal! Zuma, clearly, is tired and out of his depth. Moreover, he has no passion for rule of law and constitutionality. Under him, law and order have broken down. If the government cannot act with energy and swiftness, it should resign. The lacklustre performanceofthismassiveandcostlygovernment, one of the largest in the world, has created a great international liability for South Africa and has deeply ashamed all of us. If we do not rein in the forces of anarchy and evil now and if consequences don’t follow for what happened, before witnesses, the good story of Zuma will become a living nightmare for all of us.

Xenophobia - president’s silence deafening IT seems that foreigners entering South Africa are in for hard times. Accusations levelled against foreigners are that they are taking the limited jobs available and are associated with the rampant crime gripping the country. There is always speculationaboutNigeriansbeingkey players in the drug trade which is destroying the youth. However, these are mere allegations that have not been conclusively investigated and verified. Distinct attributes of the people who enter the country empty-handed to make a living in SA are their entrepreneurial acumen and a determination to make a success of their lives. sis is placed on the creation of small businesses with the effect of growing the economy. The recent attacks on foreigners, which led to the deaths of four people, with many being injured or displaced, is in danger of spiralling out of control. Looting foreign-owned shops and murdering foreigners is not the answer when dealing with this issue. The challenge is much more complex and multifaceted. Home Affairs Minister MalusiGigaba, togetherwitha high-powered government delegation, must deal with the issues of xenophobia immediately. Jacob Zuma’s silence is obviously deafening. These attacks have to be averted at all costs. If left unchecked, they could reach similar proportions as the Rwandan genocide that occurred in 1994. VIJAY SURUJPAL

malians, who have opened businesses in the townships, have done menial jobs, accumulated some capital and started small spaza shops. They did not take anybody’s job or steal. They used their imagination and creativity to become successful. This is the fundamental ideology underpinningthefree-market economy in this country. What they do have is an unwavering commitment to extricate themselves from their poor circumstances and improve their quality of life. This must be a lesson for every person to emulate. This level of entrepreneurial thinking and quest for self-sufficiency can be placed squarely at the education systems in these foreign countries where empha-

YOU often hear in the media about reckless lending by credit providers where they provide credit to you when you cannot afford the repayments. Credit is anything from a loan to purchasing furniture or clothing on account where you pay monthly instalments. The National Credit Act requires all credit providers to perform an affordabilityassessmentonyoubeforegranting youcredit.Putsimplyyoumusthavesufficientincomeavailableafterallyourexpenses to repay the debt. In many instances credit providers either do not perform an affordability assessment or “massage” the numbers to suit their requirements despite the fact you do not earn enough to make the repayments. This inevitably leads to you falling into arrears and the debt collectors’ start calling you and harassing you for payments. In many cases you borrow more money to meet the existing repayments and the debt spiral begins. Fortunately the National Credit Act provides protection to consumers who are victims of reckless lending and your debts can be written off. Registered debt counsellors are required to investigate reckless lending on your behalf and request documentation from the credit provider to confirm you were able to afford the credit when you applied. Where you could not afford the repaymentsthedebtcounsellingcanbring a case of reckless lending on your behalf and apply for the loan to be written off and repayments refunded. If you think you are a victim of reckless lending contact one of the professional consultants at National Debt Counsellors on 087 727 9728 or visit their website www.nationaldebtcounsellors.co.za.

A complete opthalmic examination is important in the assessment of diabetic retinopathy.

HOLISTIC WELLNESS CENTRE

DIABETIC Retinopathy is a complication of Diabetes Mellitus in which the blood sugar is elevated causing deterioration of the blood vessels of the retina. As these blood vessels breakdown, it results in leakage of fluid into the centre of the retina (maculaedema) or abnormal vessels that grow on the surface of the retina (neovascularization) which can pull the retina off or cause bleeding and scarring. This can result in the loss of central and peripheral vision. The longer someone has Diabetes Mellitus, the more likely they will develop diabetic retinopathy. Keeping blood glucose levels down to as normal as possible reduces the severity of diabetic retinopathy. Symptoms include gradual, progressive blurring of vision, sudden vision loss, floaters or fluctuating vision. It is important to recognise that people with advanced disease may not have any visual changes. It is important and mandatory that people with diabetes mellitus have their eyes examined at least once a year. A complete opthalmic examination is important in the assessment of diabetic retinopathy and this include: vision testing, drops to dilate pupils and a complete examination of the front and back of the eye. Treatment modalitis include laser, intravitreal injections and surgery. People who maintain healthy, active lifestyles and who optimise their blood sugar control,havethebestchancesofslowingpro-

WEEKLY REPORTER THE Play Sport Concept will focus on athletics throughout the second term in the hope of preparing pupils for their forthcoming school athletics meeting. Children must set high, realistic goals for themselves and train and play hard.” “I firmly believe that Play Sport is worthwhile because the same mental skills that athletes use in achieving success in sports can be used to achieve success in other areas of their lives.” The three fundamental mental skills that successful athletes must have include choosing and maintaining a positive attitude, maintaining a high level of self motivation and setting high, realistic goals. Tewary said that these skills are learned and can be improved through instruction and practice. “We begin our work with each individual by assessing their current proficiency in each of the three skills before developing a teaching plan andenhancingthespecificskillsthat need improvement and finally we periodically assess their progress,” added Tewary. Parents can enrol their children for Play Sport at Manor Primary School on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays (from 12.45 to 1.30pm or from 1.30pm to 2.15pm or from 2pm to 2.45pm) and on Saturdays (from 11.30am to 12.15pm or from 12.15pm to 1.30pm). Tewary will be hoping to remedy these wrongs during his training sessions throughout the second term. “You don’t have to be a professionalathleteoranOlympicchampion to be a successful athlete. Nor do you have to have a room full of trophies or make the front pages of the sports section. “Children must be taught at early age that sport is important to them andtheymustbecommittedtobeing the best that they can be within the scope of their limitations,” he added. “There is no doubt that sport enriches the lives of children and what

Major upsets in darts trebles tourney WEEKLY REPORTER THERE were major upsets in the KwaDukuza Darts Association (KDDA) trebles tournament held at the North Coast Tavern in KwaDukuza on Wednesday night. The formidable trio of Vinesh Geanballey, Jerry Govender and Vishalin Parmasivan easily accounted for Vasa Rungasamy, Justin Naidoo and Balu Pillay in the first set of their quarter-final clash. But, they were left red-faced after suffering a shock defeat in the second set. They rallied back gamely in the third and decisive set winning comfortably to register a fluent 2-1 win to book their place in the semi-final. Tournament favourites Jerry Arunachellam and the “Pillay-twins”, Nine Pillay and Charlie, clinically disposed of rookies Neeran Somnath, Terrence Subban and Paddy Padayachee in the opening set. Somnath, Subban and Padayachee stunned their more illustrious opponents, clawing their way from a set down to send their rivals crashing out of the tournament after winning the next two sets convincingly (2-1). Geanballey, Govender and Parmasivan were hoping to pulverize their opponents in the semi-finals, but left the North Coast Tavern licking their wounds after slumping to a humiliating straight set defeat (2-0) at the hands of Somnath, Subban and Padayachee. In the bottom half of the draws, Sanjay Singh, Sidney Naicker and Ashley Haripersaad trounced Yogan Pillay, Jodie Naidoo and Dhana Govender (2-1) to secure a semi-final berth against Darrel Shanmagum, Preggie Appadora and Terrence. Singh, Naicker and Haripersaad booked their place in the final with a comfortable 2-1 win. After Singh, NaickerandHaripersaadlostthefirstset ofthefinalatthehandsofrankoutsiders Somnath, Subban and Padayachee, darts enthusiasts expected a dramatic fight-back and a severe backlash (reminiscent of the fight-back by the foreigners after last week’s xenophobic attacks). But, Somnath, Subban and Padayachee, who have been producing brilliant darts throughout the evening, proved that their victory all the way to the final was no fluke after winning the second set easily (2-0) to scoop the KwaDukuza Darts Association trebles title. Tonight (Wednesday) KDDA will host the Sidney Naicker and Familysponsored doubles tournament at the North Coast Tavern commencing at 7.30pm.

ORMER KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union Premier League outfit, Dawnheights Cricket Club, and domestic Twenty-20 champions, Manor Cricket Club, were humbled after suffering humiliating losses in the Warriors Sport-sponsored Ilembe Cricket Union Twenty-20 Knockout Cup played at the Gledhow Ground over the weekend. Dawnheights slumped to a humiliating eight-wicket defeat at the hands of

minnows Oceanville in the quarter-finals on Saturday and the high-riding Manor outfit were brought down to earth after going down by 14 runs to rookies Nkobongo in the semi-finals on Sunday. Players and management of Dawnheights were aware of the fixture more than a fortnight ago and were requested to report to the Gledhow Ground an hour before the start time (2pm). But, Dawnheights coach Dhanraj Bageloo sent out thefirstdistresssignalat1pmonSaturday using the social media networks. His message was: “I am on the ground. The other team is already here warming up, there are no Dawnheights players yet”. President-cum-manager Rajiv Tambuti Singh sent out yet another S.O.S. barely 20 minutes prior to kick-off which

read: “Guys we are waiting for you. We are short of players”. India’sSagarAroraandVarunPal,who made their debut for Dawnheights at the beginning of the 2014/2015 season, would have loved to play (having impressed throughout the season with bat and ball), but they returned to the shores of their motherland last month and could only read the distress signals miles across the ocean. Dawnheights batted first and were bundledoutforapaltry66runsinthe18th over. R. Hazaree (17) was the only Dawnheights batsman to record double digits. J. Govender (2/9 from 4 overs) and S. Sodayan (2/13 from 4 overs) claimed two wickets each. Chasing 67 runs for victory, Oceanville

raced to an emphatic eight-wicket victory with seven overs to spare. Akshay Juggernathtop-scoredwith21runswhichincluded a huge six. B. Kalligan (17), S. Govender (15 not out) and T. Deodat (10 not out) guided Oceanville into the semi-finals. Manor arrived at the Gledhow Ground on Sunday in high spirits following their record 250-runs posted against Oceanville‘B’(intheWarriorsSportT20quarterfinal) a fortnight ago and expected to canter to victory against Nkobongo in the hope of notching up back-to-back victories in the Warriors Sport K.O. Cup. Nkobongo batted first and posted 76/9 in their allotted 20-overs with Lucky Gebane (21) the only batsman to record double figures. Aaron Pillay 2/14 from 3 overs and Cameron Pillay 2/21 from 3 overs shared two wickets each. CricketenthusiastsexpectedManorto walloptheiropponentsinlessthantheallotted 20-overs after centuries scored by Alveiro Nadasen and Dillon Rautenbach at the same venue a fortnight ago. The adage “cricket is a funny game” was confirmed yet again after Nadasen (5) and Rautenbach (9) were dismissed cheaply. Manor pinned their hopes on Desigan Pillay and Mohamed Mhlongo to take them across the finish line. But, after the demise of Pillay for just one run and Mhlongo for 9 runs, Manor’s hopes of reaching the final disappeared. They were bundled out for 62 runs in 15.4 overs with Zakarriya Cassimjee (10) the only batsman to reach double digits. Innocent Khoza (3/16 from 4 overs) and Yusuf Banda (2/12 from 2 overs) were the pick of the Nkobongo bowlers.

Scelo Ndovela of Mbozamo Primary School, Siyathokoza Mchunu of Vukile High School, Queen Ndlovu of Shakaskraal Primary and Xolani Ngiba of ML Sultan Secondary School returned from the clinic empowered and eager to share their knowledge and skills with teachers and pupils. Speaking to the Stanger Weekly, Queen Ndlovu said: “The four-day clinic included a theoretical and practical session. We were taught the seven fundamental skills every player should know before they embark on setting offensive and defensive strategies to win games. “Without all of these seven skills being taught first you are likely to be frustrated as a coach when trying to teach young boys and girls how to run your offensive.
