Four life sentences for rapist >> ‘Rapists should not be living in our community’ JYOTHI LALDAS

OUR life sentences was handed down to a convicted rapist at theKwaDukuzaRegionalCourt last week.

The rapist, 34-year-old Selvan Govender, also received an additional six years for kidnapping.

According to KZN SAPS spokes-

person Colonel Jay Naicker the KwaDukuza Regional Court convicted and sentenced Govender to four terms of life imprisonment for rape and six years for kidnapping.

Govender was convicted and sentenced on Wednesday for the rape andkidnappingoftwoteenagegirlsin Umhlali.

In the first incident, on the morn-

ing of 3 April, 2009, Govender approached a 19-year-old victim who was home alone, and promised employment.

“The girl left for the bogus interview and while en route, Govender dragged her to a nearby sugar-cane field and repeatedly raped her at knifepoint until the afternoon,” said Naicker.

“The victim managed to escape andreportedthemattertothepolice,” he added.

In the second incident on 5 May, 2009, Govender approached a 17year-old girl.

“He invited the victim to accompany him home and again, while en route, Govender dragged the girl into a nearby sugar-cane field, raping her

period during winter, at this stage estimated to be about a month,” added Harichunder.

He said that for the future, the emergency scheme will assist even after the first rains in the spring and summer months.

An additional plus factor of the emergencyschemeisthatitisthere to mitigate the effects of the drought if the drought continues into the new rainfall season as well.

“An additional measure that will be adopted, if the drought continues into 2016, is that flow to the North Coast will be supplemented by the Lower Thukela Bulk Water Supply Scheme, which is expected to be operational in the first half of 2016,” said Harichunder.

UMGENI Water expects to pump water from the uTongathi River for six months, but will stop pumping if there is sufficient rainfall to raise the level of the Hazelmere Dam to 70%.

The emergency scheme will only be used while there is sufficient water to supply Hazelmere Dam, the Tongaat Hulett Mill and the Tongaat Water Treatment Plant.

“This therefore, means that if there isn’t sufficient water in the uTongathi River, transfer into the emergency pipeline will be stopped.

“The level of the uTongathi River, like other rivers, generally dropsinthewintermonths.Inview of this situation, it is expected that the scheme will not operate for a

repeatedly until the late afternoon,” said Naicker.

Once reported, KwaDukuza SAPS opened charges of rape and kidnapping.

The KwaDukuza Family violence, Child protection and Sexual offence (FCS) Unit took over the investigation which led to Govender’s arrest.

Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni welcomed the sentence and congratulated the KwaDukuza FCS. “The SAPS will continue to ensure perpetrators are locked behind bars for a very long time. Rapists should not be living in our communities,” she said.

He went on to ask senior officials from the department of education to help the school with free scholar transportation, stating that for some parents sending their children to school is unbearably costly since some of them are unemployed.

“If the school had transport it would be overflowing with pupils,” he said.

He expressed his gratitude for the donation and said, “Thanks to Sims Recycling Solutions”.

Chairperson of the SGB Dumisani Mthembu thanked the MEC for her visit.

He reiterated the principal’s request for scholar transportation and also asked for a new kitchen as the old one was destroyed in a storm leaving the school to depend on a makeshift kitchen.

Mthembu also asked the MEC to increase the number of teachers as the current teachers are overburdened.

During her address, the MEC said that the requests made by the principal and SGB chairperson were noted adding that a feasibility study should be conducted to determine whether the school qualifies to be provided with scholar transportation.

She expressed her pride in the school’s principal because the school is well kept and beautiful.

She added that the kitchen should be renovated soon.

The MEC thanked those behind the project “We Care” which ensures that young people can access technology by recycling computers so that they can be reused by the pupils.

Nkonyeni said that government’s role is to ensure that young children “discover and develop,” their talents andthatgovernmentshould“encourage” these talents.

She said that such a project is important since it exposes pupils from previously disadvantaged communities and schools to technology and the internet meaning they will be on par and run at the same pace as the entire world.

The MEC added that Sims Recycling Solutions, through the project “We Care”, is making a tangible difference to the lives of millions of people in South Africa.

This project addresses IT illiteracy, she said, adding that many pupils make it to tertiary level illiterate when it comes to IT, “We really appreciate what you are doing for our schools,” she said.

“Education opens doors of opportunity for you,” she said, speaking to the pupils. She said potential employers prefer educated individuals.

She urged the principal to ensure that the pupils read a book, a chapter, every morning.

Retail store employees strike over alleged mismanagement >> Work resumes but discussions continue MAKHOSANDILE ZULU

HOPRITE Stanger employees picketed outside the store on Wednesday morning for, among other complaints they raised, unfair treatment by the store manager.

Chanting songs that called for the dismissal of Reena Bhana, the store manager they had gripes with, the employees told the Weekly they would only return to work once Bhana had been removed.

However, according to the South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union (Saccawu) shop steward Celiwe Gamede, the employees are back at work and on Monday,

30 March, they had met with management to discuss their grievances.

At the discussion management promised to respond by the end of the day or on Tuesday (the next day).

Someoftheaccusationsmadebytheemployees include Bhana reducing lunch hours, uncertainty on the hourly rate, disputing of salaries, not being granted leave and when off sick a doctor’s medical note is not acknowledged by Bhana and employees end up not being paid.

They complained about long years of service as casual employees and not being employed permanently.

They claimed that Bhana shouts at them in front of customers, which embarrasses them.

They said unfair dismissals have occurred before.

According to employees the store manager allegedly blames them for any shortages in a

cashtillwhencashing-upisdone.Theysaidthat they are not allowed to go to the toilet and the manager is said to display favouritism.

According to the protesting employees the departmentoflabourwasnotifiedabouttheemployees’ issues and had promised to look into thematterbutnothinghasmaterialisedthusfar.

Both the protesting group and the shop steward, Gamede, said that Gamede was unaware of the strike as on that day she was attending a union meeting in Durban.

The demonstrating bunch claimed that Gamede had not informed them of the

meeting. They further alleged that this was not the first instance whereby Gamede had attended a meeting without their knowledge and that she never gives them any feedback on the union meetings that she attends.

Bhana declined to comment on the matter and referred the Weekly to a human resources manager. She did, however, claim that the strike action was illegal according to company policy.

The outcome of the meeting was not known at the time of going to press.

EVERAL primary schools on the North Coast learnt more about the importance of water and water conservation last week during National Water Week.

The iLembe District Municipality and Sembcorp Siza Water ended National Water Week by visiting seven primary schools in the Siza Water concession area – the hardest hit section of iLembe District Municipality by the drought.

Held at the Braeside Conference Venue in Ballito, the event was also attended by the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) representatives, a South African environmental NGO in Howick, which did presentation on water conservation.

WESSA also did a variety of exercises with the pupils based on this year’s National Water Week theme - Water Has No Substitute - and water in general.

WESSA representatives Charissa Jaganath, Christine Hugo and Zanele Gumede engaged pupils on issues around water through a water quiz, where teams were given EnviroKids magazines with a water theme and

quizzed on some of the topics covered in the magazines.

Teams were asked to pick fun names and special water-themed buzz works, and were required to work as a team, read, understand and answer.

The WESSA team was impressed with how enthusiastic the teams were, and were pleased to realise how much the groups had learnt.

Each school received a pack of water-related resources from WESSA, ShareNet, as well as EnviroKids magazines with a water focus.

Exercises ended in a competition and lots of prizes were given to the winning groups.

When invites were sent to schools each was asked to bring 10 pupils who will either perform a song or a poem around this year’s theme and the drought.

The winners of the competition were Tinley Manor Primary School which performed a song in a kwaito and hip-hop style.

After the performances pupils visited the Sembcorp Siza Water Wastewater Treatment Works in Frasers - opposite Zimbali Coastal Resorts - where they saw how wastewater is treated and recycled.

Pupils also got the opportunity of tasting the recycled water.

Managing director of Siza Water Shyam Misra spoke to the pupils about the drought and how the organisation is dealing with it.

Stanley Dlamini from the iLembe District Municipality spoke on behalf of the district and discussed the importance of water and how the municipality is dealing with water shortages.

One of South Africa’s oldest bakeries sells for R13.8 million ONE of South Africa’s most iconic bakeries in KwaDukuza and belonging to Pioneer Foods, was sold on auction recently for R13.8 million.

Attracting interest nationally, the 40-yearold Sasko Bakery went under the hammer to a local buyer after a hotly contested auction.

Auctioneer Elias Tzouvanni of Nexus Property Group commented: “This property is a true landmark and is one of the most iconic properties we have ever taken to auction. Fierce bidding began at R7.5 million and quickly rose from there, before eventu-

ally going under the hammer for a little under R14 million.’’

Extending over 11 700 m2, the property went under the hammer following the relocation of the Sasko Bakery to Shakaskraal which took place in mid-2014.

Vuza Medical is an EMS service providing phone support, choosing and dispatching the proper response for a phone call request. The analogy of a windowless room

URINGadiscussionIhadwithapastor who wanted to understand my decision to announce my atheism, I constructed an analogy which I think explains the difference of opinion between him and I: The analogy of the windowless room.

I was a member of a church in my township which is a 15 minute walk from my home.

I had been attending the church since 2007andI participatedinthechurchuntil I was elected youth leader last year, after holding a few important positions in the youth section of the church.

My decision to leave the church and express my scepticism and atheism has come as a great shock to some including my former pastor.

My atheism stems from an inherent seed of doubt for everything I have ever

learned ever since I was eight or nine years old.

Now, as I was trying to explain to the man of God that my scepticism is based on the lack of objective evidence for the existence of God or the validity of the Christian religion (or any religion for that matter), I was trumped by his refusal to acknowledge the facts.

He explained to me how the order of the universe is evidence of the existence of a “loving creator”.

Hethenproceededtoundothescience of astrophysics and biology through evolution.

His facts lacked a true understanding of science and this only served to support the widely excepted idea of believers in God and practitioners of religion being close minded.

Thissparkedanimageinmymindduring the discussion of a four-sided room with a roof completely disjoint from the outside room.

In this room of the imagination, I conjured up a room where God exists and the walls and the roof are belief and indoctrination.

Inside this room (which is neither big nor small, but merely finite in size) is where all those who believe without question reside.

as big as those who reside in it believe it to be but the room is still limited it its dimensions.

Outside the room is the real world full of facts and wonders that are waiting to bediscovered.Havingcreatedthissetting, I put my sceptic self on the outside, in the real world.

In this real world that exists outside the room, there are things we know to be physical, things that are supported by facts and there are more things that are unknown, but waiting to be discovered.

The pastor understood my way of looking at things and he pointed out how it was ironic that this world view was in fact narrow minded.

He reminded me how there are professionals such as medical doctors and intellectuals who are theists besides their worldly education.

Thisforcedmetochangemyroomand putsmallwindowsonitthatletsbelievers have limited glimpses of the real world, the world outside of blind belief.

As we went our separate ways, he prom-

ised to pray for me and I nodded in appreciation.

Anyway, I continued to modify the room, or at least what the occupants thought they saw.

From outside the room, the real world, the room does not in fact exist, or rather the walls that hold the inhabitants back.

You see, the walls of belief, dogmatism, indoctrination and community acceptance are as real as the barriers that keep football players within the field of play.

In reality, in my world of the imagination at least, these lines are drawn on the ground, and as the football players are conditioned to never cross their barrier lines, so are the believers bound by mere lines in the ground.

So, there are no walls; this means the inhabitants of the non-existent room can see everything, the real world they find themselves in, but they are not allowed to cross the lines drawn in front of them.

This is an imaginary world as you know and analogies can only stretch so far, but this is how I see things as they are.

NUMBER of KwaDukuza residents participated in the annual Salt March held from the Phoenix Gandhi Settlement to the Kings Park Stadium on Sunday, 29 March.

More than 2 000 people from all walks of life joined the annual Salt March in Durban to commemorate the struggle for freedom and peace

by Mahatma Gandhi and South African Nobel Laureate Albert Luthuli.

The march is modelled on Gan-

dhi’s famous civil disobedience movement, Salt Saytagraha march of April 1930 in India, that protested against the salt tax imposed by British rulers.

The programme has been hosted for the past 11 years by the Gandhi Development Trust, based at the Phoenix Settlement which was Gandhi’s home during his tenure in the city.

Support Tekkie Tax and do your bit CHILD Welfare SA: KwaZulu-Natal is calling on schools, business houses and the community to support the Tekkie Tax campaign which will take place on Friday 29 May. Tekkie Tax is an annual fundraising campaign for welfare organisations.

During the month of April and May members of the community, schools and business houses will be asked to get a Tekkie Tax sticker for a R10 donation from Child Welfare SA: KwaDukuza.

There will be five different kinds of stickers, each representing a beneficiary sector.

People will be able to choose which of the five sectors they would like to support (children, animals, education, disability, basic community welfare) by buying one of those stickers from a sector of their choice.

The society thanks the community for supporting the Tekkie Tax campaign in 2014.

An appeal is made once again to the community to support this fundraising venture by purchasing a sticker for R10 to show

which of the five sectors your heart lies.

On 29 May, people will be wearing their tekkies in support of this good cause.

Pupils are requested to wear their stickers to school on 29 May to show their support for Tekkie Tax. TekkieTaxstickersarenowavailable for sale at the society.

ORINGKOP based Youth Club Uguquko commemorated Human Rights month by partnering with the KwaDukuza Municipality to host an exciting sports tournament recently.

The even was held in an effort to advance the interests of young people in the area by championing youth programmes.

ITH some pensioners having little or nothing to do during the day, “gambling grannies” are becoming a common sight at casinos all over South Africa, and KwaZulu-Natal is no exception.

Clinical psychologist Clive Willows said many people do not prepare psychologically for retirement.

“Often their identity and purpose is so integrated with work that they struggle to define themselves, or find a purpose when work ends.

“Thepsychologicallureofgambling is often driven by an inherent sense of fairness.

“Therefore those who believe they have worked hard and not been adequately rewarded, or perhaps dealt with unjust hardship, believe that they deserve to win, and that, somehow, the scales will be balanced in their favour,” he said.

He said those who have struggled in

lifearethemostvulnerabletobedriven by such an unconscious, but ultimately illogical, drive.

“The gambling environment usually creates a safe cocoon, and enables a withdrawal and retreat from the demands of one’s environment and the internal tensions of discontent and regret—which are often characteristics of depression in older folk,” he said.

Pietermaritzburg and District Council for the Care of the Aged social work manager Jo-Anne Stevens-O’Connor said although they did not deal with many people who admitted to gambling problems, a few clients had admitted to gambling addictions.

“One gentleman admitted he worked for himself and would sacrifice work time to hit the casino.

“Money that would have comfortably have bought him a house and replaced his ageing car was spent at the casino leaving him almost destitute.

“The latter category of pensioners would automatically fall outside the desired LSM and casinos’ primary segmentation and therefore would not be specifically targeted.”

ORD has unveiled its updated Ranger bakkie in Thailand and its sporting design tweaks throughout, improved engines and the automaker’s latest technologies.

The new Ranger will be launched in South Africa in the fourth quarter of 2015.

Specification and prices will be confirmed closer to launch.

At the front, it has a new trapezoidal grille,newdiodheadlights,tweakedbumper and bonnet. The Ranger can wade through 800mm of water, has 230mm ground clearance, 28-degree approach and 25-degree departure angles.

For low-speed torque or additional downhill braking drivers can engage the low-range 4x4 and activate the electronic rear differential. The Ranger has a towing capability of up to 3500kg.

Driving assistance technologies: • Lane-keeping alert - helps prevent the driver from unintentionally drifting out of a lane when driving at high-speeds.

• Adaptive cruise control - makes use of radar sensors to maintain both a preset speed as well as a preset distance from the vehicle ahead. When the system detects a vehicle ahead, it decelerates automatically

to maintain a safe distance.

•Forwardalert-Givesdriversavisualand audible warning when the gap to a vehicle ahead drops below a safe distance. The system also charges the brakes.

• Park assist - uses sensors to detect obstacles and provide audible warnings when the vehicle approaches obstructions at low speeds.

• Tye pressure monitor - alerting drivers when tyre pressure is too low • Electronic stability programme with rollover mitigation and trailer sway • Driver impairment monitor - uses a camera and on-board sensors to detect if the driver is drowsy. If the system notices signssuchasdriftingontheroadandsudden corrective steering inputs, the system warns the driver with signals.

In markets where it is available, Emergency Assistance uses a Bluetooth-paired and connected phone to call local emergency services after a serious collision.

•Adaptiveloadcontrol-adjuststheelectronic stability control based on vehicle load The new Ranger is equipped with hill assist, hill-descent control and emergency brake assistance.

Powering the new ranger is choice of four

engines (three diesel, one petrol) each mated to either a six-speed manual or auto and with stop/start fuel-saving.

The 3.2-litre Duratorq five-cylinder TDCi diesel has updated exhaust gas recirculation to improve fuel efficiency, Ford says, by as much as 18%. The 3.2-litre diesel is capable of 147kW/470Nm. The 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel will be offered, depending on the market, in either 118kW/385Nm guise or 96kW variant.

The new Ranger will be available with Ford’s 2.5-litre Duratec petrol capable of 122kW/225Nm of torque.

Ford says its new Ranger has “advanced sound-deadening materials” for improved insulation and cabin-noise reduction.

The new Ranger will be equipped with Sync 2, the latest generation of Ford’s in-car connectivity. It allows drivers to use voice commands, such as “temperature 20 degrees”, “play AC/DC” or “I’m hungry” to control the aircon, entertainment system and satnav.

The new bakkie also sports a 24V socket.

The 2015 Ford Ranger will be built at the automaker’s Silverton assembly plant near PretoriafordistributioninAfricaandEurope.

MELVILLE United crashed out of the KwaDukuza Local Football Association (KLFA) Easter K.O. Cup after slumping to a humiliating 5-1 defeat at thehandsofHappyStarsattheRecreation Ground on Saturday.

Stars were gifted an opportunity in the fifth minute after a defensive blunder, but Mlu Nyawo squandered the opportunity, kicking wide of the far upright. Minutes later Sabelo Ndlovu had a chance to break the deadlock, but his tame shot was comfortably saved by the Melville keeper.

In the 20th minute Stars skipper, Xolani Mkhize received a precisiontimed through ball from Mondli Motjope and the talisman striker hammered the ball with his left foot to give Stars a 1-0 lead.

Stars joy was shortlived after Sphele Ngomene headed a corner-kick into the roof of the net to snatch an equalizer (1-1). Melville could have gone ahead in the 30th minute after Simphiwe Ngcobo was involved in a one-on-one with the Stars keeper, but he recklessly hammered the ball wide.

In the 65th Philani “Rasta” Mlambo made a darting run into the box after beating his marker on the right flank.

With the goal-mouth at his mercy everyone expected him to shoot at goal, but he unselfishly passed the ball to his captain, Mkhize who riveted the ball past the hapless Melville keeper to put the result beyond doubt (5-1).

In the dying minutes of the game Mpilo’s pile-driver hit the upright, saving the blushes of the Melville lads.

ARNALL United avenged their defeat at the hands of Frendz in the Top 8 Knockout Cup in emphatic fashion after crushing their arch-rivals in straight sets (2-0) in the opening round of the Caminamix Services-sponsored Easter K.O. Cup (hosted by KwaDukuza Volleyball Association) played at the association courts on Thursday night.

The Moodaly brothers, Duran and Kevin, playing in tandem gave the “sugar-cane” outfit the psychological advantage after securing a tense first set (25-23).

Brandon “Poppy” Naidoo and the lanky duo of Kishendra “Niknaks” Dhaver and debutante Banda gave Darnall the superior height advantage (both in terms of attacking strength and blocking prowess at the net) and despite the concerted efforts of the stoutly-built Stallone Govindasamy and Alvin Moonsamy, the Frendz outfit played “catch-up” volleyball throughout the second set, trailing 5-9 before bowing out 19-25.
