Trial exams disrupted

CCOUNTING and history trial exams were stopped on Monday and mathematics on Tuesday after disruptions by KwaDukuza’s South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) members. Members shut down the local cir-
cuit and district offices early on Monday morning, making it impossible for principals to collect examination papers. Stanger High, Glenhills Secondary, Tshlenkosi Secondary and Stanger Secondary Schools also had their back-up plans shut down when Sadtu members learned of their intention to allow pupils to write backup papers and moved into the schools. On Friday, Sadtu announced its intention to “embark on a drastic mass-based action which will bring this department [to] its knees”. The union is calling for the imme-

One person was killed while seven others were injured, four critically, after a taxi and a car collided on the R102 near Groutville on Sunday. According to Netcare 911 spokesperson, Chris Botha, Netcare paramedics arrived at the scene and found two people still trapped in the twisted frames of the vehicles. “Firemen used the Jaws of Life to free the injured while the paramedics worked tirelessly to stabilise them. “After the patients were removed and stabilised on scene, they were transported to various hospitals in the area for the care that they required.” Inanotheraccident,alsoonSunday,twopeople were seriously injured after a vehicle overturned while rounding a bend on the Tinley Manor link road. Owners left confused after municipality demolishes new houses NOTHANDO NDLOVU

RIEFONTEIN residents are like a ‘ticking time bomb’ after two houses were allegedly demolished by the KwaDukuza Municipality last week. This is according to Umhlali SAPS media liaison officer, Captain Percy Buthelezi who said the ‘volatile’ community members mobilised on Tuesday and the SAPS had to calm them down. “They said they will protest like the Etete residents if the municipality continued to demolish their houses.” It is believed that the KwaDukuza Municipality purchased the land which the homes were built on for development purposes. However, there are people who started building on the site after purchasing the land from the previous land owner, Thabo Madlala. The people said they knew nothing about the land belonging to the municipality. Speaking to the Weekly, Madlala said the land did not belong to the municipality. “Many years ago my father was involved in negotiations with the municipality however, this was unsuccessful as the payment for the land was not made to my father. “There were also other people involved in these negotiations who also did not receive payment. “Furthermore, we still possess the title deed for the land. Last year my father told me to leave the area so I decided to move away and sell the land. “This land was bought by the
women whose homes were demolished.” He added that last week he was contacted by the ward councillor Mzwayi Mdluli who apologised for not informing him about the municipality's intentions. “Now the municipality is contacting me to get my father to collect the payment for the land. However, we refuse as what they are offering us now is not the initial amount that was agreed on. The municipality must tell the truth so the people know what is going on. ” Busi Nkwanyana who had her almost complete four bedroom house demolished, said she opened a case with the police after this happened. “We were told by the councillor that the land belonged to the municipality. “I had already given my landlord notice seeing as the house was almost complete. “Now that it has been demolished I don’t know what I’ll do because I have a family that was supposed to be accommodated,” said Nkwanyana. Busisiwe Mpanza said there were many other people who had recently built houses in the area. “We were the only two people in the whole area who had their houses destroyed. I was on my way to work when the community members informed me that my house was being demolished. “I had to return home only to find the blocks scattered all over. I then phoned the person who sold us the land who immediately came over. “I do not have anywhere to go now. I gave my landlord notice after

I was certain my new place would be complete in two weeks. Now all that money spent has gone down the drain.” Mpanza said as a young woman she was working hard to have her own place. She said her dream was shattered without even receiving notice. She said she has asked the councillor to help put up two rooms for the two of them. “We know that will not happen but we are still waiting for the councillor’s feedback because he told us he would have a meeting at the municipality to discuss this issue.” Mdluli said he was unaware that the community members mobilised on Tuesday but knows that there were two houses which were being built that were demolished. “I sympathise with the families but when one of the community members who bought the land came to my house I informed them that the land was going to be used for new RDP houses in the area. “After hearing about the matter I reported it during a technical services meeting where all project managers were present.” Mdluli further said: “People who do not listen are hard to work with.” “The municipality is trying to develop the area but there are still many people who are retrogressive. “I would like to urge all community members to work with us and to put aside politics and other agendas. I am more than willing to help you.” Attempts to get comment from KwaDukuza Municipality director of corporate communications, Sifiso Zulu, were unsuccessful at the time of going to press.

Manor resident left in the dark STANGER Manor resident, Nishen Govender is angry after being left in the dark. He says that despite complainingformore than a year to the KwaDukuza Municipality about a faulty street light in front of his house, nothing had been done. A frustrated Govender, eventually decided to install additional lighting at his property in Bilkis Street to light the street. Without interfering with municipal property, Govender installed a modern LED street light to brighten up the area in front of his house. Govender, who will bear the charges of the electricity consumption, said he first lodged his complaint to the municipality more than a year ago, and received no response. “I had no other option. Due to the faulty street light, car headlights were the only light seen during the night. “This is a matter of safety. With armed robberies escalating in the area I had to do something,” said Govender. Govender went on to say that the municipality must improve their complaints desk to ensure that at least their telephone calls are always answered. “Reference numbers should be given to complainants and follow-ups should be conducted by municipal officials to confirm their action is actually taking place,” said Govender.

Dube Village protesters let off
MERVYN KRISHNA THE 27 protesters from Dube Village, Groutville who were arrested and charged for public violence last week were let off the hook following intervention by KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu. The mayor approached the senior public prosecutor's office on Wednesday, August 28 and ap-
pealed to Nandy Moodley to give the accused, who are all youngsters, a second chance. The matter was resolved peacefully with a warning and the protesters gave an undertaking that they will refrain from such behaviour in future. They were arrested on Tuesday night, after blocking the R102 with burning tyres and trees in Groutville during the widely publi-
cised service delivery protest. Mthembu warned the accused of possible sentences they may face if they continue to transgress the bounds of the law. “We call for a no nonsense approach to illegal protests. I would like to welcome the release of these youngsters. It is saddening that this group failed to bring their concerns to our attention.” Mthembu went on to say peo-
ple must not take the law into their own hands but act within the parameters of the law if they need government’s attention. “I also want to commend the Stanger Magistrates Court for giving them another chance to prove themselves in society. I hope this will send a clear message that illegal protests are against the law and must be condemned without any reservations.”

Renisha Naidoo at the flight school with one of the aircraft she is licensed to fly and in 2006 joined the Flight Training College in George to work towards her commercial pilots license, getting one step closer to her dream – becoming an air crash investigator. Speaking to the Weekly, Renisha said she obtained her pilot’s licence in 2009 and then decided she wanted to be a bush pilot. “A bush pilot flies smaller chartered aircraft on dirt landing strips in mostly remote areas. I went to Zambia to do this, however, I only had 200 hours of flight experience and they need 2000. So I returned to South Africa and took upteachingEnglishtoforeignstudents whowantedtolearntoflyinSouthAfrica. In this time I also completed my grade three flight instructor rating. This enabled me to teach basic flying to students.” She was then upgraded to “grade two”, which allowed her to test students and teach advanced flying.
“IthenjoinedtheSouthAfricanCivil Aviation Authority in November last year as an air crash investigator and achieved my advanced flight rating on a Beechcraft 1900 aircraft. I am now a pilot, air crash investigator and flight instructor.” Renisha is also a member ofSouthAfricanWomeninAviation,an organisation that motivates and assists underprivileged children who want to enter the aviation sector. “The show producers found me through my work with Women in Aviation and decided I was an ideal candidate to showcase the work we do. I am super excited and flattered.” In her short time as an air crash investigator, Renisha has already investigated eight crashes. “Gauteng is the aviation hub so therearequiteafewcrashes,”shesaid. When asked why she chose such an unconventional career, Renisha said she was always intrigued by air crash

I enjoy what I do, both flying and investigating. No two flights are the same and air crash investigation is putting puzzle pieces together; both are equally exciting for me. “At the age of 24 it is not easy in this field. I have to earn respect with my knowledge and I think I'm doing a good job so far.” Renisha's hope for the future: “I want to keep moving forward. I will keep studying too. My dad is in his 50s and he is still studying so age means nothing to me. Hard work surely does not kill. I also want to pay my good fortune forward. NLESS the employers agree to adjust their offer, the strike will continue, said National Union of Mineworkers South Africa (NUMSA) Isithebe organiser Gordon Sithole on Tuesday. Sithole was referring to the Dynamic Fibre Moulding (DFM) wage strike which has now entered its third week. DFM collects and recycles old newspapers to make egg boxes. The company, based in Mandeni, has been operating for 20 years and employs about 260 people, of which 173 are on strike. According to Sithole the employees want a R5 salary increase which they decreased to R4.50 after meeting at CCMA for the second time, in addition to R27.57 for service allowance and a five per cent shift allowance. He said the employer was offering a straight 8.3% increase. “The first time we went to the CCMA the matter was unresolved. The employer rejected the R4.50 demand even after we had dropped it. The company must be prepared to make a move from what they are currently offering,” said Sithole. He added the union is still weighing its options. He said since the strikers have been locked out they are waiting for the employer to call them so that they can negotiate. DFM chief executive officer,GodfreySabido, said when converted to percentage, the R4.50 equates to more than 20%. He urged the employees to return to work, saying that the company had not retrenched any of its employees, even during the economic recession in the country. He said they provided them with water, toilets and airtime. Sabido further said the company managed to source casual and temporary employees but were faced with challenges regarding operations. “We have a heart for reconciliation as this brings me no joy or comfort. These are mothers and fathers who have families who need them. “We are trying to be as fair as possible however, if they continue to strike investors will lose confidence in the company.” The company also gave the employees a court interdict according to which the police are authorised to enforce picketing rules. “They have a right to picket. I respect their right,” said Sabido. Mandeni police said there were only two incidents of assault reported. However, the casual workers were not assaulted at the DFM premises.

It’s all about the trees EVERY year from 1 to 7 September schools, organisations and businesses participate in community "greening" events to improve the health and beauty of the local environment. Events are held around the country highlighting the benefits of planting and conserving trees to offset carbon emissions and for greening to improve the quality of life and uplift the environment, and communities. In South Africa, Arbor Day was first celebrated in 1983. In 1999, the celebration of Arbour Day was extended to National Arbor Week. It is now celebrated for the entire month of September. As we know, trees absorb carbon dioxide and turn it into oxygen. The natural carbon dioxide cycle keeps a balance in the amount of CO2 in our atmosphere. But our actions and behaviour cause changes which upset this natural balance. The creation of too many greenhouse gases causes an imbalance with heat being trapped in the earth's atmosphere, increasing the overall average temperature, resulting in global warming. We produce excessive amount s of carbon dioxide by burning coal and petrol (referred to as 'fossil fuels' or fossil energy) in our power plants, factories and cars, and in deforestation. The destruction of rain forests and cutting down of other forests also affects the balancing act. By destroying earth's natural forestation, we threaten our existence. Planting trees is one of the most cost-effective ways of offsetting our carbon emissions. Trees play a vital role in rural and urban populations. They are needed to enrich and anchor soil, to maximise water supplies, to beautify and humanise townships and urban areas and to provide shade and shelter. They are also crucial for biodiversity conservation. Products and services from trees include food, timber, fibre, medicines and energy.

According to SAPS spokesman Colonel Jay Naicker Mpungose attacked a 31-year-old woman with a screwdriver while she was asleep at her house in the Ocheni area and raped her in 2011. The rapist also robbed the vic-
tim and fled the scene. The incident was reported to the Maphumulo SAPS and shortly afterwards Mpungose was arrested and charged with rape and robbery. ANC to celebrate UDF 30th anniversary MERVYN KRISHNA

HE United Democratic Front will celebrate the 30th anniversary of its landmark launch on Friday6SeptemberattheiLembeAuditorium at 4pm. The event will be hosted by the Greater KwaDukuza Region branch of the ANC. Former UDF leader, Paul David who was arrested with UDF stalwart, the late Archie Gumede in 1984 and charged for treason, will deliver the keynote address with provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala. Speaking to the Weekly, David said the organisation worked to unite South Africans in the fight against apartheid and played a pivotal role in the struggle. It included leaders like Allan Boesak, Frank Chikane, Helen Joseph, TrevorManuel,AlbertinaSisulu,Desmond Tutu, Jay Naidoo, Mosiuoa
Lekota and Saleem Badat. “TheUDFbroughttogetherpeople from various class, racial and gender backgrounds who shared the goal to resist the oppressive laws of the apartheid government and bring about liberation. “The frustration with apartheid cut across race, gender, age and class. People were desperate for freedom. They were willing to give of themselves wholly to the fight for their liberation,” said David. Hesaidthattheunbanningofpolitical organisations, the release of Nelson Mandela and other political prisoners, the acceptance by the apartheid regime of the failure of its constitutional reforms and their acceptance that South Africa’s problems would be resolved through negotiations with credible leaders of the majority, meant that the UDF had served its purpose of creating an effective platform to bring an end to

The workmanship was excellent and he needs to be complemented for the neat and methodical way in which this street was resurfaced. It now stands out distinctly from the other main streets. There were no disrup tions to traffic and long delays. Theworkwasundertakenatnightanddur ing weekends. The street was left neat and tidy. There was no unsightly dumping of re surfacing materials on the pavements and gutters, which is an eyesore when some unqualified “flybynight” contrac tors take on the job.
To the contractor, I wish to say “thank you” for a job well done. You are improving the image of KwaDukuza! The municipality should engage you in all further contracts. You are the right man for the job. But the same cannot be said of the contractor who does grass cutting in the Stanger Manor and surrounding areas. After cutting the grass, the workers on ly rake the grass they cut and leave all the other debris like packets, cans, cigarettes packets, pine cones fallen from pine trees (Manor Park etc). This is ridiculous.

Brent crude oil is priced at $114 (R1169.55) a barrel presently and could rise to as much at $120 (R1231.10) a barrel in the next few weeks. I need not add more except that my interest is the plight of the RA Moodley Old Age Home which is an example of marginalisation by ideologydriven politicians. One pensioner who keeps very detailed records, said the last time work was done at the Old Age Home was in 2006 by the then DA councillor for Ward 19. Their concerns are as follows: 10 outside lights not working, maintenance on ceilings, windows, doors, etc; security fence is cut and gives easy access to criminals; unhelpful municipal staff. These are the elders who gave the best years of their lives to the country and need tenderloving care. Crime in residential areas has increased dra matically and our elders need protection more than ever before. If it means they have to protest to be heard and get the work done, then so be it. Recently the KDM spent R40 000 on service delivery month, but if this had been spent on the old age home, we would have something to show that would benefit the old peo ple and satisfy ratepayers. ILLIONS of underprivileged younggirlsinSouthAfricado not attend school for a week every month because of menstruation and not being able to afford sanitary napkins. This fact prompted prominent businesswoman, Margaret Hirsch to make a difference to the lives of these young girls by launching the “Girls with Dignity programme”. As part of the programme Hirsch, who recently won the award for the Best Women Empowered Community Programme in the Top Women South Africa ceremony, visited Nonhlevu Secondary School in Groutville to give female pupils an inspiring talk, motivating them to strive to be the best! “Todaythewomenintheworldare the leaders. They care and take care of everyone. You need to know who you are, know where you’re going, and work as hard as you can to achieve your goals.” Sheaskedthatthegirlswriteanessayabouttheirgoalsandhowtheysee themselves in the future. She gave them an incentive by offering them R5000 (first prize) R2000 (second prize) and R1000 (third prize) in prize money. She also handed out “panty packs” to all the girls present. “The most wonderful thing about the “panty packs” is that the girls are given three. One on, one off and one in the wash. These are now reusable and will last them approximately five years.” Speaking about the programme, Hirsch said when she won the (BWASA) Business Woman of the Year Award last year, she heard about this school-days lost problem, which had been brought to the BWASA’s attention by chairperson, Michelle Brown.

They could tieitaroundtheirwaistsbutitiseasier to stay at home.” She said she was more than happy to get involved with the project but found that everybody was waiting for somebody else to finance it. “So I thought the only thing I could do was finance it myself; I took this on as my project for every month of my

THE senior citizens of the iLembe District are not to be messed with. This was proven at the KwaZuluNatal leg of the Golden Games held at the Arbor Park Grounds in Newcastle last week, when the iLembe District secured the provincial win. iLembe’s oldest citizens were overall winners and walked away with 10 trophies, nine gold medals, four silvers and two bronze. The fourth edition of the annual provincial Golden Games saw 1 300 seniors from all the 11 district municipalities across the province enjoy the three days competition. The games were attended by, among others, the MEC for arts, culture, sport and recreation, Ntombikayise Sibhidla-Saphetha who also officially opened the event. Speaking at the opening, Sibhidla-Saphetha said the games were a clear indication of the government’s commitment to care for the senior citizens. The MEC shared testimonies by many of the senior citizens who have reaped health benefits as a direct result of participating in sport. Huge upset in Dolphin Coast darts league
GLEDHOW produced a huge upset in the Distel Richelieusponsored Dolphin Coast Darts Union League after beating pace setters Nevil’s Auto (2016) at the Action SportsBarinDarnallonWednesdaynight. Gledhow, who played second fiddle to Nevil’s Auto throughout the 2013 season, arrived in Darnall in high spirits and were determined to notch up their 3rd succes sive league victory. The opening frame was evenly con tested and the tame 33 draw was true reflection of the performance of both teams. Gledhow were all the rage in the
2nd frame, winning five of the six singles matches to grab a 84 lead. Nevil’s Auto reduced the deficit to 2 points after winning the 3rd frame 42 to stay in contention for honours. But, the Gledhow lads had other ideas on their mind after winning the 4th frame (42) to forge ahead (1410). With four points separating both teams, the penultimate frame proved to be a crucial league decider. Nevil’s Auto, desperate to keep their unblemished Dis tel Richelieu League record intact, threw everything at their opponents. But, the
Gledhow lads held their nerve, claiming a 42 to virtually seal the tie. Trailing 1218, Nevil’s Auto needed to win all six singles matches in the final frame in the hope of returning home with at least a solitary point. But, Darrel Shan magum and Neeran Somnath (who won five games apiece) produced a match winning performance to deny Nevil’s Auto an outright (60) victory. Nevil’s Auto 42 win in the final frame was not enough to save the blushes of the log leaders who slumped to their maiden league defeat (1620).

President of Siyaya Football Club, Nkosinathi “Bafana” Mhlongo said: “We have been the bridesmaid in the South Stream of the SAFA Ilembe SAB Regional League for the last two seasons and failing at the final hurdle of qualifying for the SAFA Vodacom League playoffs. “We are certain that with the acquisition of Bissessur at the head of the coaching department, we are going to grab the number one spot in the
hope of qualifying for the playoffs at the end of the 2013/2014 season”. Bissessur has a wealth of experience in football, both as a player and a coach and is looking forward to the challenge of coaching Siyaya this season. He played for Real Celtic (19841989), Stanger United in the National Soccer League (1990), a 3-month trial with Amazulu Football Club, Movers Football Club in the National Soccer League (1991/1992), Crusaders (1993) and Stanger United in the National Soccer League (1994-2000). Bissessur represented the South African Police (SAP) outfit in the National Soccer Championship (1996, 1998 and 2000). He went on to represent the National SAP squad in 1996. He represented the South African Police in the Tri-Nations Soccer Challenge against Swaziland and Mozambique in 2001. He has made his mark in coaching great local clubs like Real Celtic in the SAFA KwaDukuza Local Football Association Premier League, Stanger United, Real Celtic and Shakaville Warriors in the SAB Regional League. Bissessur is known for his strong sense of discipline, hard work ethic on the field and desire to play attractive football and is optimistic that these qualities will take the club forward in attaining its goals.
He stated that he is looking forward to build on from where the club ended their season last term and stressed that hard work lay ahead, but was confident that the club had sufficient quality in players to make a bid for honours. In an interview with the Stanger Weekly, Bissessur said: “With less than a month to go before the start of the new season, my objective is to gel the team together and be crowned SAB Regional League champions and make a determined quest for the Vodacom League playoffs”. Bissessur urged the local soccer enthusiasts to make it a habit of coming to the Recreation and Manor Ground each week in the hope of inspiring the Siyaya lads to victory.

COOL LEADERS OOL Leaders finished on top against Grove End (2-1) in an enthralling SunilPranpathIncorporated-sponsored Stanger and District Volleyball Association (SDVA) Corporate League game played at the association courts on Wednesday night. Oozing confidence, the log leaders arrived at the courts with no substitutes on the bench, but were made to work extremely hard in their 25-21 win in the opening set. The lanky Kamal Singh and Bevlin Thaver enjoyed a bevy of good sets from the ultraconsistent setter Raj Naidoo. Despite the early setback, Cool Leaders took the game to their more illustrious opponents and started to find chinks in the Grove End armory. Robin Reddy and the left-handed Alvin Ramalingam proved to be a perennial thorn in the flesh of the Grove End lads. Clive Kista tried to keep Grove End in the hunt for honours with his deft dumps, but the superb cover work of Rodney Ponnsamy and Wilson Govender served as a catalyst as the Cool Leaders lads upped their tempo to snatch a thrilling 29-27 win to level the scores at 1-1 and push the game into a third and decisive set. Both teams produced champagne volleyball overflowing with individual talent in the final set. Revy Harryprasad and Reddy capitalised on Selvan Moonsamy’s sets to give Cool Leaders a narrow 5-3 lead. Singh and Thaver quickly snuffed out the deficit to level the scores at 6-6. Cool Leaders kept the scoreboard ticking at the change of sides and raced to a 13-11 lead. With their backs against the wall, Grove End rallied back gamely to level the scores at 14-14 before eventually succumbing to a 14-16 defeat. Dignitaries, including the president of KwaDukuza Local Football Association, Nkosinathi Mhlongo, past and present officials and players of the club, patrons and sponsors joined in the club’s festivities. Suren Bissessur, a founding member of the club, took the guests on a trip down memory lane reminiscing the proud achievements of the club over the past 25 years.
“In the late 80s the club played under the banner of SAPS Football Club with the majority of players being policeman, but pressure from the nonracial sports body, SACOS which distanced itself from the police during the apartheid era resulted in the name-change to Sporting Club Real Celtic, Bissessur. He said that despite the lack of funding, the club was able to overcome the storm of adversity through the commitment, dedication and zeal of players and officials who dug deep into their pockets to meet the club’s day to day running expenses.
