>> Shortage of teachers brings Tugela Secondary to a standstill MERVYN KRISHNA

NGRY parents of pupils at Tugela Secondary School shut down the school and blocked pupils and teachers from entering on Monday morning to protest a shortage of teaching staff at the school. The school governing body (SGB) has drawn the battle lines with iLembe District education director Thembi Vilakazi and acting circuit manager AJ Msane, who they blame for blocking efforts to grant the school additional teachers due to the school’s increased enrollment. Frustrated SGB deputy chairman Bongani Gumede said despite the steadily increasing enrolment over the past four years, the department has not granted the school a single additional teacher in terms of the post provision norm (PPN). “In 2011 the school had an enrolment of 517 pupils with 24 teachers; this year we are currently sitting on 1 200 and we still have 24 teachers. Last year, we approached Vilakazi and Msane for seven additional teachers. They promised us that they will give us the teachers. However, they failed to keep to their promise. “We then approached the department of education for assistance. Last week our school was issued a PPN certificate for 10 additional teachers. However, when the
teachers failed to arrive at the school, I numerous clashes have taken place becontacted Vilakazi who was very rude to tween Msane and school principals,” said me. She blocked this and told me that she Mbele. Another parent, David Zibane queswas going to investigate how the school tioned why the circuit always seems received a PPN certificate.” A parents’ meeting was then called on “mired in controversy with the district Sunday at the school and a decision was manager being summoned continuously taken by parents to close the school gates by Msane to put out fires in his schools”. until the department gives the school “This indicates he is a weak leader,” Zithe 10 additional teachers. “The department of education and public works spent millions of rands to refurbish the school, which was completed last year. “Nowthattheschoolisano-fee school, we have pupils from as far as KwaDukuza and Mangete. We have 1 200 pupils enrolled at the NEXT TO STUDIO ONE school this year. More than 300 pupils have never seen a teacher in their class this year. In some classes we have approximately 90 pu1/4 Mutton pils just so that they can learn,” Bunny said Gumede. (Super Lamb) He added Msane, who is on the ground, working with schools, knows the problem they are facing with the large enrollment. “He is now turning a blind eye on our school. Now the parents are Mutton Curry demanding the removal of Msane, & Rice with whom they say knows of their sitSalad uation and is doing nothing.” Concerned parent Patricia Mbele said that since the arrival of Msane, the KwaDukuza circuit is in turmoil. “There is a high level of dissat“The House of Curries” isfaction amongst the administration staff at the circuit office and

According to a well placed source, the provincial Department of Education has for the past five years not created a single new post and issued schools with the “post pro-visionary model” (PPM), whether they had an increase in the number of pupils or not. The reason given is a lack of funds. “Evidence of the lack of funds is clear at

Saturday morning, 1 February. Respondent officers were told at the scene that three unknown men came our of the bush and opened fire on the vehicle, killing Xulu and Mthethwa. However, investigations by the Hawks uncovered that the story was 'cooked up' to mislead the investigation and Mokoena was arrested on Monday, February 3. Speaking to the Weekly after the matter was adjourned, Xulu's father Colonel Bongani, a station commander in Nkandla, said his family is distraught. “My son had three small children, one a five month old baby, how are they supposed to live without their dad. “This should not have happened. I am angry, my son was a good boy and was going to make a good policeman. “We cannot accept this. It is so painful.
“The other day I went outside my house and called out for my son to park our vehicles like I always did. “I didn't realise that he is gone until my wife came out and asked me why I was calling out for him.” Xulu said when he went to the scene he could not believe what had happened. “It was not the first time I saw a scene likethat.Ihavebeen to much worse scenes in my long time as an officer of the law. “But this, seeing my son and shaking him trying to make him wake up and then realising that he wouldn't has left me broken. It was the worst moment of my life.” Mokoena, who was escorted out of the court by armed police officers, was given a brief moment with members of his family before being taken to Cato Manor until his next appearance.

HE KwaDukuza SAPS lieutenant accused of murdering two of his colleagues was denied legal aid when he appeared in the KwaDukuza Magistrate's Court for a second time on Thursday last week. Lieutenant colonel Thulamuza Mokoena (53) was remanded in custody and his case adjourned to Thursday, 27 February, giving him time to seek out his own legal representation. Mokoena was in the police kombi when student constable Thobani Xulu (25) and constable Sbusiso Mthethwa (31) were shot and killed. Itwaspreviously alleged that Mokoena, Xulu, Mthethwa and a fourth officer stopped along the R74 to investigate a suspicious red vehicle in the early hours of
STANGER Manor resident Roshanlal Omadat was part of an international syndicate comprising South Africans, Liberian, Nigerian and Congolese nationals who were arrested during a sting operation on Thursday last week at the Blue Waters Hotel in Durban. Omadat, together with Sunil Chimanlall, Willy Wandibha, Victor Soloman, Olwwaseun Akinniyi and Nhlanhla Zulu are accused of being part of a syndicate that defrauded several businessmen of large sums of money. The gang allegedly operated in Richards Bay and Durban. According to provincial SAPS spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane the suspects were lured to the hotel by intelligence operatives from the Crime Intelligence Unit where they conducted fraudulent transactions. “Their operation was monitored and taped by police crime intelligence operatives. The suspect’s modus operandi was to target business people who had financial problems. “The suspects offered the merchant payments by way of electronic funds transfers in return for the use of valid speed-point machines to download large amounts of ‘refunds’ onto counterfeit credit cards. “The suspects then drew the money or transferred it into other accounts before the banks could intervene.” He said duplicate cards may also have been used to transfer the money for the benefit of the suspects. “The suspects transferred money to shelf bank accounts which they said would be used to buy goods or draw cash. Some of the money could have been laundered by cashing the proceeds at a casino.” According to Zwane the syndicate also skimmed cards using the card reader. “The syndicate could refund amounts just under R500 000 on to each card. In this way, they emptied businesses bank accounts.” Zwane said the suspects were found with 15 bank cards and a card reader and eleven cellular phones. “Two bank cards loaded with R400 000 and R480 000 respectively were found at the scene. “These cards were linked to several other accounts and if the suspects had not been apprehended they could have moved R52 million into their own accounts.” All six men appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday facing charges of fraud, theft and of contravening the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act and the Regulation of Interception of Communications and Provision of Communication Related Information Act. They were remanded in custody until Monday, 24 February. However, attorney SunithaHiralallwhoisactingforOmadatandChimanlall, appealed to the magistrate for them both to be kept in police holding cells, instead of being sent to prison. She said both men were ill and needed medical attention. Magistrate Vanitha Armu ordered that the men be held at the Westville Prison Hospital.

AKING good on his promise to encourage pupils of the iLembe District to pass matric with distinctions, Public Enterprises Minister Malusi Gigaba handed out R1000 cheques to 19 pupils for each distinction they received during the 2013 final examination. In addition 200 pupils were given educational support material which includes study guides, calculators and instruments. Twenty-three teachers from five schools were also rewarded for their hard work which resulted in 100 percent matric pass rate in their schools. Minister Gigaba, together with Nompumelelo Institute of Leadership and the iLembe District Municipality hosted the awards ceremony on Saturday, at the iLembe Auditorium. The programme instituted by Gigaba is aimed at providing support to pupils from destitute families to compete at an equal level with those that come from wealthy backgrounds. Over the past eight years, Nompumelelo has supported over 3000 pupils. Other motivational speakers at the event included, Department of Education general manager Dr Francis Nzama, Eskom board member Phenyane Sedibe as well as performing astists DJ Oskido, L'vovo Dirango and T-zozo.
Gigaba had promised pupils, while addressing a function of the Nompumelelo Institute of Leadership, that any pupil who received a distinction would get a R1000 grant for each distinction they obtained from his own pocket. Gigaba, a patron of the Nompumelelo Institute of Leadership, said all community members should be involved in the education of children to ensure we have a prosperous country. “The most important thing that we must do is educate the Africanchild.Thecommunityhasanimportantroletoplayintheeducation of the African child. The government cannot solve the problems of this country alone, it is everyone's duty to pitch in and lend a helping hand. Let us make education fashionable. Our children must boast to each other about how many distinctions they obtained. “As parents we must be involved in the education of our children. Parents should be asking teachers how they can assist in improving the quality of learning for their children. We haven't reached the mountain top of our desires. We must get to a point where our children are proud of being educated so that we build a prosperous country,” Gigaba. Regional secretary of the ANC Muzi Sithole thanked the minister for ploughing back into his community and “putting your money where your mouth is”. KZN planning commission’s professor, Bonke Dumisa, presented an overview of the current areas needing attention, explaining that the state has a vision and plan in place up to 2030. Major issues include education, health, crime rural development and job creation, the latter of which is top of the log, Dumisa said. He described areas with potential economic growth and development, including KZN’s harbours and maritime industry, King Shaka International Airport, the agricultural industry, manufacturing, tourism and expanded public works programmes (EPWP), which address unemployment. “This summit is not just a panacea for all the challenges we are facing in the province and the country, but it will serve to find a way forward. “People don’t want to think about the future, they want results now, which is not always possible. “With our plans, we hope to create 11 million jobs in the next few years,” Dumisa said. “In the future we will over-take eThekwini Municipality in terms of economic development,” he added. Areas also on the cards for growth in the 2030 vision include human resource development, community development, strategic infrastructure plans, environmental sustainability, special equity and state policy. “Government efficiency needs to improve for the province to grow, and
1 BILLION’S worth of water and sanitation facilities have been built in the district as a result of the last iLembe growth and development summit in 2008. Delegates at last week’s 2014 conference, held at the Hotel Ebandla on Wednesday and Thursday, are hopeful that this year’s summit will yield similar benefits. Representatives of local municipalities KwaDukuza, iLembe, Maphumulo and Ndwedwe were present, as well as relevant stakeholders – 200 delegates in total. The summit was aided with funds from the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA). Presentations were given on the first day by the KwaZulu-Natal planning commission, provincial treasury, Iyer Urban Designs and (special development plan). Also attending were the Ingonyama Trust Board, iLembe Chamber of Commerce and others. On the first day, iLembe mayor Welcome Mdabe set the tone by revealing what the last summit was able to achieve. “Since the last summit, and following the resolutions adopted, iLembe spent R1 billion on the development of water and sanitation infrastructure. “Following on the resolutions adopted for a district economic development agency to be established, Enterprise iLembe was formed. infrastructure needs to be worked on. Water supply still needs to reach more people, improvement of roads and railways are very important as is improvement in energy production,” Dumisa said. He added that spatial use needs to be organised better – there must be more sports grounds and facilities, churches, crèches, and schools in human settlement areas. Provincial treasury’s Clive Coetzee explained in his presentation that the province – and the country – should be at an at least 3,5 per cent growth rate per annum, preferably five per cent, but that KZN is nowhere near this. “There is a lot of pessimism about the country – we need people in our development teams who can see past the daily dramas and take on the role of ‘game changers’,” he said. On the second day, delegates chose which of four commissions - agriculture, services, manufacturing and tourism - they would participate in, with each coming up with its own resolutions. Subsequently, a summit report will be compiled and submitted to stakeholders for adoption by the District Inter-Governmental Relations forums. During discussions the creation of a multi-stakeholder forum was tabled, which would include all municipalities, sector departments, and private sector and community organisations to implement, monitor and report on the summit resolutions.

At the time of my retrenchment my biggest concern was finding new employment ASAP, let me tell you that right now the urgency of finding a new employment is no longer an issue. Innovatech has given me a return on my money that no one else could (at least none of the other institutes that I contacted). After 17 years of “working for my salary” I am actually allowing my money to work for me, a phrase that I always thought was applicable to people with millions to invest and something that your average working class, may find hard to do.
Investor Testimonial - Mrs Kubashni Govender Gold Class 2013 Like many fellow investors I have been reading the many testimonials on Innovatech. I also wanted to provide you with my experience. It varies a bit from the others I have read, in that I was not a referral investor. I contacted Innovatech, after due my due diligence on the company and the market they deal in. I knew of no other investor at the time. Let me start at the beginning. I have worked in the banking industry for 17 years, and like many people out there I am very wary of Investing in any company. I always took the conservative route in savings, any investments were best done (in my opinion with a financial institution). I read an article in the Sunday Paper on the company that Prinasen Dhaver founded, to say the least I was impressed.
Another commendable aspect to this inspiring team, is their social responsibility. The fact that they give back to the community and invest in the future generations of this country makes me proud, to be associated with you. I really feel a part of this investment community because of your dedication in keeping us apprised in all you are involved, be it charity or future innovative business acumen. Well done and I sincerely wish that there was an easier way I could convince potential investors out there of the faith I have in my decision to invest with you. A short while later, due to retrenchment I was forced into looking at investing or the alternate of just keeping a fixed account at not very good growth opportunities (the “safe and prudent” method). I remembered the article on Innovatech and it took me close to 8 months to finally decide to contact them. On hindsight a procrastination on my part that ultimately cost me. Right up to the day I signed the MOU and made the transfer of funds I was still of the opinion “this was too good too be true” returns like these should have investors queuing outside their doors. Close to six months later I am still waiting for the other shoe to drop, this was so easy. My capital investment is guaranteed, and I receive my monthly returns timeously and accurately. To anyone out there with any doubts don’t just take the investors word for it, but the GOPIO International and many other organizations seem to have the same faith in Mr Dhaver, otherwise they would not recognize this business on an international platform of his peers. Once again congratulations, and the international recognition is not only commendable but always re-enforces my confidence in my investment with you. I now find myself trying to free up as much cash, to inject into my portfolio. The success you achieved in such a short time, tells me that the future holds great things for us. Mrs Kubashni Govender

ROCESSIONARY caterpillars travel in long, undulating lines, one creature behind the other. Jean Henri Fabre, the French entomologist - (a scientist who studies everything there is to know about insects and their habits), once led a group of these caterpillars onto the rim of a large flowerpot, so that the leader of the procession found itself nose to tail with the last caterpillar in the procession, forming a circle without end or beginning. Through sheer force of habit and,

of course, instinct, the ring of caterpillars circled the flowerpot for seven days and seven nights, until they died from exhaustion and starvation. An ample supply of food was close at hand and plainly visible, but it was outside the range of the circle, so the caterpillars continued along the beaten path. People often behave in a similar way. Habit patterns and ways of thinking become deeply established, and it seems easier and more comforting to follow them than to cope with change, even when change may represent freedom and achievement. If someone shouts, "Fire!" it is automatic to blindly follow the crowd, and many thousands have needlessly died because of it. How many stop to ask themselves: Is this really the best way out of here? So many people miss the boat because it's easier and more comforting to follow without questioning the qualifications of the people just ahead, than to do some independent thinking and checking. A hard thing for most people to fully understand is that people in such numbers can be so wrong, like the caterpillars going around and around the edge of the flowerpot, with life and

food just a short distance away. If most people are living that way, it must be right, they think. But a little checking will reveal that throughout all recorded history, the majority of mankind has an unbroken record of being wrong about most things, especially the important things. It's difficult for people to come to the understanding that only a small minority of the people ever really get the word about life, about living abundantly and successfully. Success in the important departments of life seldom comes naturally, no more naturally than success at anything - a musical instrument, sports, fly-fishing, tennis, golf, business, marriage, parenthood, landscape gardening. But somehow people wait passively for success to come to them, like the caterpillars going around in circles, waiting for sustenance, following nose to tail living as other people are living in the unspoken assumption that other people know how to live successfully. It's a good idea to step out of the line every once in a while and look up ahead to see if the line is going where we want it to go. If it is, it could be the first time...

Paedophiles won’t win RECENTLY we heard of the shocking story of a thirteen year old girl being allegedly raped and impregnated by her uncle. I am sure most of us were horrified and felt very sorry for the girl and her family. It won’t be long and we will hear of another similar story and again we will feel sorry. After a while we will carry on with our lives and forget about the incident. Most of us will wish that the perpetrators will be punished severely and some of us will wish we could do something about it. So I decided with the help of the KwaDukuza Child Welfare, friends and other organizations, to stand up and say enough is enough. I’m hoping to get permission soon to organize a protest and hope the public will support me and join to make our voices heard. I applaud the brave mother for breaking the silence and against all odds, coming out to let the people know what she is
going through. I hope this mother’s action will encourage other mothers and even the victims to end the silence. These paedophiles groom their victims and threaten them so their acts carry on for years. Most family members suspect something is wrong but would rather keep quiet or stay in denial. They do this for many reasons, such as shame to the family name or because the perpetrator could be the bread winner. I urge the victim to go to a teacher, friend or trusted family member and talk about what’s happening to them. Most of the time the victims are made to feel that it’s their fault. This makes the victims feel guilty and hence the silence. When good people do nothing about atrocities like this, we help them to fester. I am counting on public support to make a difference. Be pro-active. Sarah Bee

AUM IN LOVING MEMORY
Mom you were an Angel here on earth We learned so very much from you. You were so gentle and so kind your Smile would always see us through. You taught us how to love unconditionally And how to be or very best in all we do. You gave your all to God and your family Never once stopping to think about you. You were more than a mother you were our Best friend and a great listener too. Oh how we miss our special talks, and All the fun things we used to do. Mom we can never say goodbye to you, Because we could never bear the pain. Instead we say we love you Mom Until we meet again. A Tribute to Our Mom by your children: Leann, Deon, Don, Dianne, Leon, Feroz, Farah and a host of family and friends.
Sanjavee Puvan It’s six years since you left us. We have lost what heaven has gained, one of the best fathers this earth had ever contained, deep in our hearts a memory is kept, of the father we loved and never forget. The tears of excess can’t be wiped away, but the tears of the heart forever stay. Our deepest wish would be today to have you back the same sweet way. Your smile will always be remembered. Sadly missed by his loving wife, 2 daughters, 2 sons-in-law, 2 sisters, 1 brother, grandchildren, 1 great granddaughter, son, daughter-in-law and a host of family and friends.
of the late SURENDRAN PADAYACHEE 13/12/1964 - 24/02/2012 Beloved son of Tholsie and Ronnie Padayachee. Always will be loved and remembered dearly. Sadly missed by Mum, Dad, Suraya, Rabin, Celeste, Lall and a host of family and friends.

ARON Pillay (57) and Alveiro Nadasen (54 not out) notched up halfcenturies to guide Manor ‘A’ to an emphatic 137-runs victory against Ashraffiya in an Ilembe Cricket Union Twenty-20 League game played at the Gledhow Ground on Saturday. Manor won the toss and elected to bat first on a tricky Gledhow strip. Ashraffiya, who were guilty of bowling a slow over rate (bowling only 18 overs in the allocated time) were penalized 24 runs (12 runs per over). Manor scored 160/3 in the 18-overs, but their tally was boosted to 184/3 (thanks to the generous 24 penalty runs). Pillay and Nadasen frustrated the Ashraffiya lads who were red-faced after chasing the red leather ball all over the Gledhow park. Pillay smashed a brilliant 57-runs whichincluded three fours and three towering sixes.

Stars outshine Mtwana >> Stars outfit left the Mtwana lads virtually chasing shadows WEEKLY REPORTER

UNIOR Stars outshone Mtwana (3-0) in a SAFA KwaDukuza Local Football Association Premier League game played at the recreation ground on Saturday. With the mercury level swelling well over the 40 degrees mark, both teams adopted the “short-passing” approach. There were some neat exchange of passes, especially from the Stars outfit, who left the Mtwana lads virtually chasing shadows in the first quarter of the match. Xolani had a golden opportunity of putting Stars ahead in the opening five minutes, but he fluffed his shot, kicking wide. Minutes later, Siyabonga Mncwabe beat the off-side trap and with only the Mtwana keeper to beat, he blasted the ball sky-wards. Stars broke the deadlock in the 20th minute after Sizwe Shezi intercepted a cross from Siphesihle Ngcobo and hammered a low drive to the left of the Mtwana keeper to give his side a 1-0 lead. In the 30th minute, Thothukane Dlomo threw away a chance of drawing his team level. He beat his marker on the right flank with consummate ease and instead of passing the ball to the unmarked Sheriff Mngadi in the

The Stars fans virtually invaded the pitch in awe after Nkosikona Mhoni hammered the final nail into the coffin (3-0) of the Mtwana outfit. An ecstatic Stars coach, Sizwe Zulu said:“Our3-0 victory today underlines our credentials for honours in the KLFA Premier League and the
boys are motivated to overhaul the pace setters as the league gains momentum. “We are just three points behind joint leaders Rocky Park and Thembeni. With such great team spirit and camaraderie in the camp I am confident that we will qualify for promotion into the SAFA Ilembe Regional League at the end of the 2013/2014 season”. Meanwhile, on Wednesday night Rocky Park squandered a 1-0 (first half) lead after sharing the
Singh clinches darts singles’ title WEEKLY REPORTER SANJAY Singh clinched the Ilembe Darts Association singles title after trouncing Nine Pillay in straight sets (2-0) before a huge crowd at the Action Sports Bar in Darnall on Wednesday night. It was a nervy start for veteran darts campaigner Singh, who had to claw his way from a set down in the quarter-finals to register an impressive 2-1 win against Charlie Pillay. Vinesh Geanballey held onto a hard fought 2-1 win against Jerry Govender to set up a mouth-watering semi-final clash against Singh. Singh, noted for his “catch-me-if-youcan-tactics” got off to a flyer and dictated the pace in the semi’s. Despite a late splurge by the “home-town favourite”, Singh was already on his bicycle racing to

their emphatic 2-0 win to book his place in the final. In the top half of the draws, Pillay pulverized Terrence Subban (2-0) in the quarters to secure a semi-final berth against Vasa Rungasamy, who narrowly beat Woody Naidu (2-1). Pillay upped the tempo in the semi’s and wasted little time in disposing of the inexperienced Naidoo in straight sets (2-0) to advance to the final. With Pillay in such scintillating form, darts enthusiasts expected a closely contested final. Singh hardly worked up a sweat in his fluent 2-0 win to secure his first major silverware of the 2014 darts season. Tonight (Wednesday), Ilembe Darts Association will host a doubles tournament at the Action Sports Bar in Darnall commencing at 7.30pm.

spoils (1-1) with Thembeni in a topof-the-table KLFA Premier League clash played at the Recreation Ground on Thursday night. Thembeni stunned their rivals in the 10th minute after Similindila Ntshangase’s powerful shot from just outside the box beat the Rocky Park keeper, Reece Adams and just clipped the crossbar. On the other end of the field, Raoul Swartbooi came close to breaking the deadlock after his thunderous drive ricocheted off the crossbar. Tyrrell Goodwin came close to beating the Thembeni keeper in the 20th minute, but his shot just missed the far upright by centimetres. In the 30th minute Swartbooi swiveled past his marker before unleashing a perfect cross to the unmarked Lindokuhle Zulu who made no mistake from close range to give Rocky Park a well deserved 1-0 lead. The Rocky Park coach, Randolph “Dog” Swartbooi did not mince his words during the break and urged his charges to up the tempo in the 2nd half. Sadly, Rocky Park’s woeful performance in front of goals, resulted in them conceding a late goal and a share of the 1-1 spoils. On Friday night Madundube scraped to a hard fought 1-0 win against Movers at Recreation Ground.
